RESUMEN

The genus Henricia is known to have intraspecific morphological variations, making species identification difficult. Therefore, molecular phylogeny analysis based on genetic characteristics is valuable for species identification. We present complete mitochondrial genomic sequences of Henricia longispina aleutica, H. reniossa, and H. sanguinolenta for the first time in this study. This study will make a significant contribution to our understanding of Henricia species and its relationships within the class Asteroidea. Lengths of mitochondrial genomes of the three species are 16,217, 16,223, and 16,194 bp, respectively, with a circular form. These genomes contained 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and a D-loop. The gene order and direction aligned with other asteroid species. Phylogenetic relationship analysis showed that our Henricia species were in a monophyletic clade with other Henricia species and in a large clade with species (Echinaster brasiliensis) from the same family. These findings provide valuable insight into understanding the phylogenetic relationships of species in the genus Henricia.

RESUMEN

A new species of Cumacea belonging to the genus Dimorphostylis Zimmer was collected from the Dokdo and Ulleung Islands in the East Sea of Korea. The new species, Dimorphostylispilocorpussp. nov., can be distinguished from all other Dimorphostylis species by the combination of the body surface covered with numerous slender simple setae; carapace with one transverse, a pair of frontal, and three pairs of oblique ridges; three pairs of oblique ridges connected on a submedian carina; telson of the female with 1 pair of short simple and 1 short, stout simple seta centrally; 1 pair of stout simple and 3 pairs of short simple setae on the post-anal section; pleonite 5 of male with 1 spiniform seta on the ventral margin; post-anal section with 2 pairs of stout simple setae bearing a single subterminal setule on both sides; terminal margin with 3 stout simple setae; and a central seta slightly longer than the outer pair of setae. Full illustrations of the new species, including the mouthparts, are given in this paper. A key to the Korean species of Dimorphostylis is also provided.

This study presents the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Poraniopsis inflata, providing valuable information on its genetic and taxonomic studies. Through next-generation sequencing, we successfully obtained the complete mitogenome of P. inflata, spanning a length of 16,322 bp. This genome structure encompasses 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis, based on a dataset of 13 PCG sequences, illuminated the phylogenetic relationships of P. inflata with other species of class Asteroidea and a species of echinoderm classes. The maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree showed that P. inflata closely clustered with Linckia laevigata. By revealing its mitochondrial genome and positioning it within the Asteroidea lineage, this study provides insights into the phylogenetic context of P. inflata.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the collateral map's ability to predict lesion growth and penumbra after acute anterior circulation ischemic strokes. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of selected data from a prospectively collected database. The lesion growth ratio was the ratio of the follow-up lesion volume to the baseline lesion volume on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). The time-to-maximum (Tmax)/DWI ratio was the ratio of the baseline Tmax > 6 s volume to the baseline lesion volume. The collateral ratio was the ratio of the hypoperfused lesion volume of the phase_FU (phase with the hypoperfused lesions most approximate to the follow-up DWI lesion) to the hypoperfused lesion volume of the phase_baseline of the collateral map. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify independent predictors of lesion growth. The concordance correlation coefficients of Tmax/DWI ratio and collateral ratio for lesion growth ratio were analyzed. RESULTS: Fifty-two patients, including twenty-six males (mean age, 74 years), were included. Intermediate (OR, 1234.5; p < 0.001) and poor collateral perfusion grades (OR, 664.7; p = 0.006) were independently associated with lesion growth. Phase_FUs were immediately preceded phases of the phase_baselines in intermediate or poor collateral perfusion grades. The concordance correlation coefficients of the Tmax/DWI ratio and collateral ratio for the lesion growth ratio were 0.28 (95% CI, 0.17-0.38) and 0.88 (95% CI, 0.82-0.92), respectively. CONCLUSION: Precise prediction of lesion growth and penumbra can be possible using collateral maps, allowing for personalized application of recanalization treatments. Further studies are needed to generalize the findings of this study. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Precise prediction of lesion growth and penumbra can be possible using collateral maps, allowing for personalized application of recanalization treatments. KEY POINTS: • Cell viability in cerebral ischemia due to proximal arterial steno-occlusion mainly depends on the collateral circulation. • The collateral map shows salvageable brain extent, which can survive by recanalization treatments after acute anterior circulation ischemic stroke. • Precise estimation of salvageable brain makes it possible to make patient-specific treatment decision.

OBJECTIVE: Collateral circulation is associated with the differential treatment effect of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) in acute ischemic stroke. We aimed to verify the ability of the collateral map to predict futile EVT in patients with acute anterior circulation ischemic stroke. METHODS: This secondary analysis of a prospective observational study included data from participants underwent EVT for acute ischemic stroke due to occlusion of the internal carotid artery and/or the middle cerebral artery within 8 hours of symptom onset. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify independent predictors of futile recanalization (modified Rankin scale score at 90 days of 4-6 despite of successful reperfusion). RESULTS: In a total of 214 participants, older age (odds ratio [OR], 2.40; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.56 to 3.67; p<0.001), higher baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores (OR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.04 to 1.21; p=0.004), very poor collateral perfusion grade (OR, 35.09; 95% CI, 3.50 to 351.33; p=0.002), longer door-to-puncture time (OR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.14; p=0.009), and failed reperfusion (OR, 3.73; 95% CI, 1.30 to 10.76; p=0.015) were associated with unfavorable functional outcomes. In 184 participants who achieved successful reperfusion, older age (OR, 2.30; 95% CI, 1.44 to 3.67; p<0.001), higher baseline NIHSS scores (OR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.22; p=0.006), very poor collateral perfusion grade (OR, 4.96; 95% CI, 1.42 to 17.37; p=0.012), and longer door-to-reperfusion time (OR, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.15; p=0.003) were associated with unfavorable functional outcomes. CONCLUSION: The assessment of collateral perfusion status using the collateral map can predict futile EVT, which may help select ineligible patients for EVT, thereby potentially reducing the rate of futile EVT.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to verify the value of arterial spin labeling (ASL) collateral perfusion estimation for predicting functional outcomes in acute anterior circulation ischemic stroke. METHODS: This secondary analysis of an ongoing prospective observational study included data from participants with acute ischemic stroke due to steno-occlusion of the internal carotid artery and/or the middle cerebral artery within 8 h of symptom onset. We compared the collateral map, which is a 5-phase collateral imaging derived from dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography, and ASL to validate the ASL collateral perfusion estimation. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify independent predictors of favorable functional outcomes. RESULTS: One hundred forty-eight participants (68 ± 13 years, 96 men) were evaluated. The ASL collateral perfusion grade was positively correlated with the collateral perfusion grade of the collateral map (P < .001). Younger age (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.36-0.78, P = .002), lower baseline NIHSS score (OR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.78-0.92, P < .001), intermediate ASL collateral perfusion grade (OR = 4.02, 95% CI = 1.43-11.26, P = .008), good ASL collateral perfusion grade (OR = 26.37, 95% CI = 1.06-655.01, P = .046), and successful reperfusion (OR = 5.84, 95% CI = 2.08-16.42, P < .001) were independently associated with favorable functional outcomes. CONCLUSION: ASL collateral perfusion estimation provides prognostic information, which can be helpful in guiding management decisions.

Two new genera and four new species of siphonostomatoid copepods of the family Asterocheridae associated with sponges are described from the Korean East Sea (Sea of Japan). These new copepods are distinguishable from related genera and species by their diagnostic morphological characters as follows: Amalomyzon elongatum n. gen. n. sp. bears an elongated body, two-segmented rami of legs 2, a uniramous leg 3 with two-segmented exopod, and a rudimentary leg 4 represented by a lobe. Dokdocheres rotundus n. gen. n. sp. has an 18-segmented female antennule, a two-segmented endopod of antenna, and unusual setations of swimming legs, including three spines plus four setae on the third exopodal segment of legs 2-4. Asterocheres banderaae n. sp. has no inner coxal seta on leg 1 or 4, but has two strong, sexually dimorphic inner spines on the second endopodal segment of male leg 3. Scottocheres nesobius n. sp. bears elongate female caudal rami about six times longer than wide, a 17-segmented female antennule, and two spines plus four setae on the third exopodal segment of leg 1.

To determine the value of susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) for collateral estimation and for predicting functional outcomes after acute ischemic stroke. To identify independent predictors of favorable functional outcomes, age, sex, risk factors, baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, baseline diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesion volume, site of steno-occlusion, SWI collateral grade, mode of treatment, and successful reperfusion were evaluated by multiple logistic regression analyses. A total of 152 participants were evaluated. A younger age (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 0.42; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.34 to 0.77; P < 0.001), a lower baseline NIHSS score (aOR 0.90; 95% CI 0.82 to 0.98; P = 0.02), a smaller baseline DWI lesion volume (aOR 0.83; 95% CI 0.73 to 0.96; P = 0.01), an intermediate collateral grade (aOR 9.49; 95% CI 1.36 to 66.38; P = 0.02), a good collateral grade (aOR 6.22; 95% CI 1.16 to 33.24; P = 0.03), and successful reperfusion (aOR 5.84; 95% CI 2.08 to 16.42; P = 0.001) were independently associated with a favorable functional outcome. There was a linear association between the SWI collateral grades and functional outcome (P = 0.008). Collateral estimation using the prominent vessel sign on SWI is clinically reliable, as it has prognostic value.

RESUMEN

Anneissia intermedia (A.H. Clark, 1916) is a common crinoid found in waters along the coastlines of China, Japan, and Korea. In this study, we determined the complete mitogenome of A. intermedia. The genome was found to be 15,874 bp in length and consists of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs. With the exception of Antedon mediterranea, the gene order and genetic characteristics of the A. intermedia mitogenome are identical with those of the mitogenomes of other crinoids. The complete mitogenome of A. intermedia will contribute to enhance our understanding of the phylogeny of crinoids.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Yuukianura szeptyckii Deharveng & Weiner 1984 was sequenced, assembled, and annotated. The mitochondrial genome of Y. szeptyckii has a length of 15,771 bp and contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer (tRNA) genes, and 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. Y. szeptyckii was closely clustered with the following species of Neanuridae: Bilobella aurantiaca and Friesea grisea.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of collateral and permeability imaging derived from dynamic contrast material-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography to predict PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation in acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: The secondary analysis of a published data from participants with acute ischemic stroke. The multiphase collateral map and permeability imaging were generated by using dynamic signals from dynamic contrast material-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography obtained at admission. To identify independent predictors of PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation, age, sex, risk factors, baseline National Institutes of Health Stoke Scale (NIHSS) score, baseline DWI lesion volume, collateral-perfusion status, mode of treatment, and successful early reperfusion were evaluated with multiple logistic regression analyses and the significance of permeability imaging in prediction of PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation was evaluated by subgroup analysis. RESULTS: In 115 participants, including 70 males (mean (SD) age, 69 (12) years), PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation occurred in 6 participants with very poor collateral-perfusion status (MAC 0). MAC 0 (OR, 0.06; 95% CI, 0.01, 0.74; P = .03) was independently associated with PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation. In 22 participants with MAC 0, the permeable signal on Kep permeability imaging was the only significant characteristic associated with PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation (P = .009). The specificity of Kep permeability imaging was 93.8% (95% confidence interval: 69.8, 99.8) in predicting PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation. CONCLUSION: Individual-based prediction of PH 2 hemorrhagic transformation in patients with acute ischemic stroke may be possible with multiphase collateral map and permeability imaging derived from dynamic contrast material-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography.

RESUMEN

The complete mitochondrial genome of Allonychiurus kimi (Lee, 1973) was sequenced, assembled, and annotated. The mitochondrial genome of A. kimi is 14,386 bp in length and contains 13 protein-coding, 22 transfer RNA, and 2 ribosomal RNA genes. A. kimi was closely clustered with the following species of the family Onychiuridae: Onychiurus orientalis, Orthonychiurus forlsomi, and Tetrodontophora bielanensis.

RESUMEN

A new species of the genus Henricia Gray, 1840 that belongs to the family Echinasteridae is described from South Korea. Henricia epiphysialis sp. nov. has epiphyseal ossicles at the ends of the abactinal and lateral plates, and the abactinal and lateral spines form a hooked crown. The partial sequence of the mitochondrial COXI gene (537 bp) of H. epiphysialis sp. nov. was obtained, and the new species was morphologically and genetically compared with other related Henricia species.

In this study, next-generation sequencing was used to obtain the complete mitogenome of Henricia leviuscula (Stimpson, 1857). The mitogenome form was found to be a circular molecule 16,119-bp long with a 60.4% AT bias. The gene arrangement of H. leviuscula was exactly the same as that of previously reported mitogenome for another species of Echinasteridae, such as Echinaster (Othilia) brasiliensis, containing 37 genes (13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs). A phylogenetic tree was constructed using the 13 PCGs and 2 rRNA sequences. Henricia leviuscula formed a monophyletic clade with E. (O.) brasiliensis and this clade formed a larger clade with species of the Paxillosida and Valvatida.

RESUMEN

A new species of Ophiuroidea, Ophiacantha scissionis sp. nov., is described. It was collected from Munseom Island, Jeju-do, South Korea at a depth of 28-36 m, by SCUBA diving. Ophiacantha scissionis has unique and distinct morphological characteristics: small disk, densely covered by small trifid spines, radial shields completely concealed by disk spines, six arms with four arm spines proximally, fissiparous. In addition, this species is clearly distinguished from other species of Ophiacantha by mitochondrial COI. This species is usually hexamerous and reproduces asexually by fissiparity. It is the first report of fissiparous reproduction in the genus Ophiacantha.

In this study, we determined the complete mitochondrial genome sequences of Aquilonastra batheri. This is the first study on mitochondrial genome sequencing of the genus Aquilonastra belonging to the family Asterinidae, order Valvatida, and class Asteroidea. The complete mitogenome of A. batheri was 16,463 bp and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and two rRNAs. The orders of PCGs and rRNA genes were identical to those of nine recorded mitogenomes of asteroids. The phylogenetic tree determined by the maximum likelihood method revealed that A. batheri was clearly grouped with Patiria pectinifera, which belongs to the family Asterinidae.

In this study, we determined the complete mitochondrial genome sequences of Distolasterias nipon belonging to the class Asteroidea in the phylum Echinodermata. The complete mitogenome of D. nipon was 16,193 bp in length and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs. The orders of PCGs and rRNAs were identical to those of the eight recorded mitogenomes of asteroids. The phylogenetic tree determined by the maximum likelihood method revealed that D. nipon was clearly grouped with Aphelasterias japonica and Asterias amurensis, which belong to the family Asteriidae.

BACKGROUND: The natural ratios of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) stable isotopes can be varied in some specific living organisms owing to various isotopic fractionation processes in nature. Therefore, the analysis of C, N, and S stable isotope ratios in ginseng can provide a feasible method for determining ginseng authenticity depending on the cultivation land and type of fertilizer. METHODS: C, N, and S stable isotope composition in 6-yr-old ginseng roots (Jagyeongjong variety) was measured by isotope ratio mass spectrometry. RESULTS: The type of cultivation land and organic fertilizers affected the C, N, and S stable isotope ratio in ginseng (p < 0.05). The δ15NAIR and δ34SVCDT values in ginseng roots more significantly discriminated the cultivation land and type of organic fertilizers in ginseng cultivation than the δ13CVPDB value. The combination of δ13CVPDB, δ15NAIR, or δ34SVCDT in ginseng, except the combination δ13CVPDB-34SVCDT, showed a better discrimination depending on soil type or fertilizer type. CONCLUSION: This case study provides preliminary results about the variation of C, N, and S isotope composition in ginseng according to the cultivation soil type and organic fertilizer type. Hence, our findings are potentially applicable to evaluate ginseng authenticity depending on cultivation conditions.

Anthraquinones (AQs) and phenolic compounds are important phytochemicals that are biosynthesized in cell suspension cultures of Polygonum multiflorum. We wanted to optimize the effects of plant growth regulators (PGRs), media, sucrose, l-glutamine, jasmonic acid (JA), and salicylic acid (SA) for the production of phytochemicals and biomass accumulation in a cell suspension culture of P. multiflorum. The medium containing Murashige and Skoog (MS) salts and 4% sucrose supplemented with 1 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 0.5 mg/L thidiazuron, and 100 µM l-glutamine at 28 days of cell suspension culture was suitable for biomass accumulation and AQ production. Maximum biomass accumulation (12.5 and 12.35 g fresh mass (FM); 3 and 2.93 g dry mass (DM)) and AQ production (emodin 295.20 and 282 mg/g DM; physcion 421.55 and 410.25 mg/g DM) were observed using 100 µM JA and SA, respectively. JA- and SA-elicited cell cultures showed several-fold higher biomass accumulation and AQ production than the control cell cultures. Furthermore, the cell suspension cultures effectively produced 23 phenolic compounds, such as flavonols and hydroxycinnamic and hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives. PGR-, JA-, and SA-elicited cell cultures produced a higher amount of AQs and phenolic compounds. Because of these metabolic changes, the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities were high in the PGR-, JA-, and SA-elicited cell cultures. The results showed that the elicitors (JA and SA) induced the enhancement of biomass accumulation and phytochemical (AQs and phenolic compounds) production as well as biological activities in the cell suspension cultures of P. multiflorum. This optimized protocol can be developed for large-scale biomass accumulation and production of phytochemicals (AQs and phenolic compounds) from cell suspension cultures, and the phytochemicals can be used for various biological activities.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of different flush methods on transfemoral cerebral angiography (TFCA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-blind randomized controlled trial included 50 patients who had undergone TFCA. Balanced block randomization was used to allocate participants into intermittent-flush (n = 25) and continuous-flush (n = 25) groups. Differences in procedure duration, amounts of contrast medium and heparinized saline used, heparin dose, blood loss, fluoroscopy time, radiation dose, and occurrence of new embolic signal (NES) on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The procedure duration was shorter in the continuous-flush group (mean 26.5 min ± 3.7) than in the intermittent-flush group (mean 29.6 min ± 2.8) (P = .004). Amounts of injected contrast medium (mean 20.2 mL ± 4.4 vs 57.1 mL ± 9.0), wasted heparinized saline (mean 19.8 mL ± 9.6 vs 92.3 mL ± 16.7), and aspirated blood (mean 4.7 mL ± 1.3 vs 13.2 mL ± 2.9) were lower in the continuous-flush group than in the intermittent-flush group (P < .001). The amount of injected (or infused) heparinized saline, heparin dose, fluoroscopy time, radiation dose, and occurrence of NES on DWI did not differ between the groups (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: The use of continuous flushing during TFCA reduced the procedure time, amount of contrast medium needed, amount of wasted heparinized saline, and blood loss, but no difference in the occurrence of NES on DWI was noted between the groups.
