RESUMEN

Physical fitness (PF) includes various factors that significantly impacts athletic performance. Analyzing PF is critical in developing customized training methods for athletes based on the sports in which they compete. Previous approaches to analyzing PF have relied on statistical or machine learning algorithms that focus on predicting athlete injury or performance. In this study, six machine learning algorithms were used to analyze the PF of 1,489 male adolescent athletes across five sports, including track & field, football, baseball, swimming, and badminton. Furthermore, the machine learning models were utilized to analyze the essential elements of PF using feature importance of XGBoost, and SHAP values. As a result, XGBoost represents the highest performance, with an average accuracy of 90.14, an area under the curve of 0.86, and F1-score of 0.87, demonstrating the similarity between the sports. Feature importance of XGBoost, and SHAP value provided a quantitative assessment of the relative importance of PF in sports by comparing two sports within each of the five sports. This analysis is expected to be useful in analyzing the essential PF elements of athletes in various sports and recommending personalized exercise methods accordingly.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) combined with arthroscopic meniscal plasty on meniscus injury of the knee joint in the elderly. METHODS: Fifty-six elderly patients with meniscus injuries were evaluated, including 28 patients who underwent arthroscopic meniscal repair and 28 patients who underwent arthroscopic meniscus repair combined with PRP injection. Primary outcomes included visual analogue scale (VAS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Lysholm score, Lequesne index, Range of motion (ROM), and secondary outcomes included bone gla-protein (BGP), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1). The primary and secondary measurement outcomes were assessed for each patient before and after the 12 weeks of treatment. RESULTS: The VAS, WOMAC, Lysholm, Lequesne, and ROM were more improved in the PRP group compared to the control group (all P < 0.05). BGP, IGF-1, and MMP-1 were more reduced in the PRP group compared to the control group (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The treatments of PRP combined with arthroscopic meniscal plasty can significantly improve the pain, function, and physiologicindicators in elderly patients.

RESUMEN

During the off-season, soccer players in Korea attend the winter training season (WTS) to build running stamina for the next season. For young soccer players, proper recovery time is needed to prevent injury or muscle damage. In this study, urinary metabolites in young players after 1, 5, and 10 days of the WTS were analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) combined with multivariate analysis to suggest appropriate recovery times for improving their soccer skills. After NMR analysis of the urine samples obtained from young players, 79 metabolites were identified, and each group (1, 5, or 10 days after WTS) was separated from the before the WTS group in the target profiling analysis using partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Of these, 15 metabolites, including 1-methylnicotinamide, 3-indoxylsulfate, galactarate, glutamate, glycerol, histamine, methylmalonate, maltose, N-phenylacetylglycine, trimethylamine, urea, 2-hydroxybutyrate, adenine, alanine, and lactate, were significantly different than those from before the WTS and were mainly involved in the urea, purine nucleotide, and glucose-alanine cycles. In this study, most selected metabolites increased 1 day after the WTS and then returned to normal levels. However, 4 metabolites, adenine, 2-hydroxybutyrate, alanine, and lactate, increased during the 5 days of recovery time following the WTS. Based on excess ammonia, adenine, and lactate levels in the urine, at least 5 days of recovery time can be considered appropriate.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous angiosarcoma (CAS) is a rare but fatal cancer. Established CAS cell lines are necessary for the investigation of their properties and treatment options. METHODS: Two cell lines, KU-CAS3 and KU-CAS5, were established from human angiosarcoma specimens obtained from the scalp. Flow cytometric assay, tube formation assay, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) uptake assay, immunofluorescence analysis, real-time PCR, tumorigenesis assay, and STR analysis were conducted. RESULTS: The cells showed endothelial cell properties, based on the cobblestone appearance upon reaching confluence, CD31 positivity, tube-formation activity, active uptake of acetylated LDL, and vWF expression. The two cell lines expressed relatively high levels of adrenergic ß2 receptor, and the VEGF1 and VEGF2 receptors. In the in vivo study, the growing neoplasms, confirmed as CAS, were identified as subcutaneous dark papules. KU-CAS cell lines were considered authentic based on STR profiling. CONCLUSIONS: KU-CAS3 and KU-CAS5 are the first human CAS cell lines having tumorigenic potential in vivo.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacteria are commonly found pathogens; however, skin and soft tissue infections due to nontuberculous mycobacteria are often associated with surgical procedures, particularly after lipoplasty. Although nontuberculous mycobacteria are resistant to some chemical disinfectants, glutaraldehyde, peracetic acid, povidone iodine, alcohol, and chlorine are still used for the sterilization of medical instruments. This study investigated the efficacy of various disinfectants in a fatty environment with adipose and a bloody environment without adipose. In addition, this study was also used to identify the most effective disinfectant against nontuberculous mycobacteria. METHODS: Three nontuberculous mycobacteria (Mycobacterium avium, M. abscessus, and M. fortuitum), pathogens frequently found in skin and soft tissue infections, were used. Seven chemical disinfectants were tested in both fatty and bloody environments. The disinfectants used were considered to have a sterilization effect when the log10 reduction factor exceeded 5. RESULTS: Most disinfectants had some sterilizing effects against nontuberculous mycobacteria; however, glutaraldehyde was the most effective against all 3. Chlorhexidine and povidone iodine also displayed sterilizing effects. Of the disinfectants tested, only alkyldiaminoethylglycine hydrochloride showed a diminished effect with statistical significance, specifically against M. fortuitum in a fatty environment, whereas it had effective results in a bloody environment. CONCLUSIONS: Glutaraldehyde showed the greatest sterilizing effect on nontuberculous mycobacteria with a log10 reduction factor >5 in both fatty and bloody environments. However, some chemical disinfectants did not show sufficient sterilizing effects in a fatty environment and, therefore, should be used with caution for the sterilization of nontuberculous mycobacteria. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level II.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: COVID-19 guidelines for persons with disabilities published globally during the early phase of the pandemic by non-governmental organizations and federal agencies were reviewed and analyzed by trends of information provided under various settings. METHOD: The Google search engine was used by applying the following search terms: COVID-19, Coronavirus 2019, Disability, and Guidelines. Search efforts yielded 514 records from 1 December 2019 to 16 May 2020. The selected 26 guidelines were classified for analysis by organizations (NGOs, non-profit, and governmental institutions), information provided (risks, prevention, and countermeasures), target group (people with disability, service and support providers, and family members), and environmental setting (hospital, community, and home). RESULTS: Government agencies from eight countries published results. Eight of the 26 guidelines were presented by non-governmental organizations, and 18 were not. There were 15 guidelines for individuals with disabilities; seven for service providers, staff, and families providing care; and four addressing both the individuals with a disability and care providers. In terms of appropriate environment and scope, there were 19 guidelines produced for community, government, home, and hospital. The information predominantly presented regarded the prevention of COVID-19 with 22 sources, followed by general information containing risks and response strategies. CONCLUSION: The majority of the published guidelines focused primarily on the risks and prevention of COVID-19 for people with disabilities. Future procedures should include specific methods in guiding COVID-19 response strategies for the disabled and caregivers who provide essential health services with access to online resources in multiple languages and dialects.

RESUMEN

AIM: To validate six previously known primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG)-related loci in a Korean population. METHODS: Representative POAG-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from six loci (cyclin-dependent kinase 4 inhibitor B antisense RNA 1 (CDKN2B)-AS1, sineoculis homeobox homolog 1/sineoculis homeobox homolog 6(SIX1/SIX6), atonal BHLH transcription factor 7 (ATOH7), cell division cycle 7-transforming growth factor beta receptor 3, CAV1, transmembrane and coiled-coil domain family 1 (TMCO1) were selected and genotyped from discovery (POAG=309, heathy=5400) and replication cohorts (POAG=310, healthy=5612 and POAG=221, healthy=6244, respectively). Data were analysed using logistic regression to calculate the OR for POAG risk associated with SNP. RESULTS: From the discovery cohort, rs1900004 in ATOH7 (OR=1.29, p=0.0024); rs1063192 (OR=0.69, p=0.0006), rs2157719 (OR=0.63, p=0.0007) and rs7865618 (OR=0.63, p=0.0006) in CDKN2B-AS1, and rs10483727 in SIX1/SIX6 (OR=0.68, p=7.9E-05) were nominally associated with the risk of POAG. The replication cohorts revealed nominal associations with rs2157719 (OR=0.72, p=0.0135), rs1063192 (OR=0.63, p=0.0007) and rs7865618 (OR=0.52, p=0.0004) in CDKN2B-AS1. A mega-analysis from the entire Korean population revealed significance with rs1063192 (OR=0.77, p=6.0E-05), rs2157719 (OR=0.63, p=0.0007) and rs7865618 (OR=0.58, p=1.9E-06) in CDKN2B-AS1 and with rs10483727 in SIX1/SIX6 (OR=0.79, p=9.4E-05), with the same direction of effect between the discovery association and the replication sample. CONCLUSIONS: Variants near CDKN2B-AS1 and SIX1/SIX6 may require further investigation to obtain more genetic information on POAG development in a Korean population.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Abdominal tissue transfer has become the most commonly used tool for breast reconstruction. However, a secondary operator is often responsible for donor closure, which leaves dissatisfaction to patients due to inconsistent donor scars. Now, an absorbable dermal stapler is popularized worldwide and currently used for wound closure in many surgical fields. In this study, we aim to evaluate the abdominal donor site scar in using an absorbable dermal staple compared to a conventional suture. METHODS: This is a prospective, randomized controlled and double-blinded study. Between January 2018 and April 2019, a total of 30 patients who underwent breast reconstruction using abdominal flap were included. Donor sites were divided into equal halves, and the each dermal layer was sutured with either dermal staples or traditional suturing, respectively. At 1, 3 and 6 months after operation, the scar was evaluated by two blinded plastic surgeons by using the modified Manchester scar scale (MSS). RESULTS: An averaged sum of modified MSS was lower for the side sutured with a dermal stapler at the first month (11.76 ± 2.12 vs. 12.28 ± 2.03, p = 0.097), third month (12.17 ± 1.86 vs. 12.62 ± 2.31, p = 0.301) and sixth month (11.28 ± 2.63 vs. 12.14 ± 2.76, p = 0.051). Also, the dermal stapler side scored significantly higher for patient satisfaction than did the suture side (4.03 ± 0.98 vs 3.66 ± 0.97, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The objective outcome of the scar closed by an absorbable dermal stapler was not statistically superior to conventional suturing. (p > 0.05) In the subjective outcome, however, it showed a significantly higher patients' satisfaction (p < 0.05). RESUMEN

In the Republic of Korea, 90.5% of those living with spinal cord injury (SCI) are faced with medical complications that require chronic care. Some of the more common ones include urinary tract infections, pressure sores, and pain symptomatology. These and other morbidities have been recognized to deteriorate the individual's health, eventually restricting their community participation. Telerehabilitation, using information and communication technology, has propelled a modern-day movement in providing comprehensive medical services to patients who have difficulty in mobilizing themselves to medical care facilities. This study aims to verify the effectiveness of health care and management in the SCI population by providing ICT-based health care services. We visited eight individuals living with chronic SCI in the community, and provided ICT-based health management services. After using respiratory and urinary care devices with the provision of home visit occupational therapy, data acquisition was achieved and subsequently entered into a smart device. The entered information was readily accessible to the necessary clinicians and researchers. The clients were notified if there were any concerning results from the acquired data. Subsequently, they were advised to follow up with their providers for any immediate medical care requirements. Digital hand-bike ergometers and specialized seating system cushions are currently in development. The ICT-based health care management service for individuals with SCI resulted in a favorable expected level of outcome. Based on the results of this study, we have proposed and are now in preparation for a randomized clinical trial.

RESUMEN

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common skin malignancy. This report describes the case of an unusual extensive SCC involving the whole hemiface, which required reconstruction with a combination of a dual vascular free transverse rectus abdominis muscle (TRAM) flap and a skin graft. A 79-year-old woman visited our hospital with multiple large ulcerated erythematous patches on her right hemiface, including the parieto-temporal scalp, bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva, cheek, and lip. A preliminary multifocal biopsy was performed in order to determine the resection margin, and the lesion was resected en bloc. Orbital exenteration was also performed. A free TRAM flap was harvested with preserved bilateral pedicles and was anastomosed with a single superior thyroidal vessel. The entire TRAM flap survived. The final pathological examination of the resected specimen confirmed that there was no regional nodal metastasis, perineural invasion, or lymphovascular involvement. The patient was observed for 6 months, and there was no evidence of local recurrence. Usage of a TRAM flap is appropriate for hemifacial reconstruction because the skin of the abdomen matches the color and pliability of the face. Furthermore, we found that the independent attachment of two extra-flap anastomoses to a single recipient vessel can safely result in survival of the flap.

RESUMEN

Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) is commonly used to enhance bone regeneration. The potential of BMP-2 for bone regeneration varies according to the concentration and release kinetics on the implanted site. Therefore, it is important to determine appropriate carriers of BMP-2. However, no optimal delivery vehicles have been identified. In the present study, we used alginate microbeads as a delivery vehicle for BMP-2. Alginate microbeads can be implanted onto the disease site through surgery or injection. The objective of this study was to evaluate that the osteoinductive properties of BMP-2 are effective in alginate microbeads as a carrier. In this study, the release kinetics of BMP-2 in alginate microbeads was evaluated using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. BMP-2 released from alginate microbeads induced high alkaline phosphatase activity in canine adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells. Injection of alginate microbeads with BMP-2 into mouse subcutaneous tissue, as well as surgical implantation into the 5-mm circular calvarial defects in rats, was conducted and the results showed extensive new bone formation. In conclusion, alginate microbeads can be utilized as an effective BMP-2 delivery vehicle for use in orthopedic surgery and as an injectable vehicle for a minimally invasive therapy. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: There is a growing interest in finding psychosocial predictors related to cognitive function. In our previous research, we conducted a cross-sectional study on memory age identity (MAI) and found that MAI might be associated with objective cognitive performance in non-cognitively impaired elderly. A longitudinal study was conducted to better understand the importance of MAI as a psychosocial predictor related to objective cognitive function. METHODS: Data obtained from 1345 Korean subjects aged 60 years and above were analyzed. During the two-year follow-up, subjective memory age was assessed on three occasions using the following question: How old do you feel based on your memory? Discrepancy between subjective memory age and chronological age was then calculated. We defined this value as 'memory age identity (MAI)'. A generalized estimating equation (GEE) was then obtained to demonstrate the relationship between MAI and Korean version-Mini Mental State Examination (K-MMSE) score over the 2 years of study. RESULTS: MAI was found to significantly (ß=-0.03, p< 0.0001) predict objective cognitive performance in the non-cognitively impaired elderly. CONCLUSION: MAI may be a potential psychosocial predictor related to objective cognitive performance in the non-cognitively impaired elderly.

RESUMEN

Relatively few studies have examined the psychological predictors of cognitive functions in the elderly. We aimed to investigate the relationship between MAI and cognition in the non-cognitively impaired (NCI) elderly. Data obtained from 1345 Korean subjects aged 60+ years were analyzed. MAI was defined as the discrepancy between subjective memory age and chronological age. We conducted the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to demonstrate the relationship between MAI and Korean version-Mini Mental State Examination (K-MMSE). There were significant differences in the estimated means of K-MMSE score among the 4 quartile groups of MAI (Q1-Q2>Q3>Q4, F=13.12, p<0.0001). These results suggested that MAI may be associated with cognitive function in the NCI elderly.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of physical, mental, social activity, and health concern on cognition in the elderly by means of the health concern and activity (HCA) model. Data were obtained from 3157 subjects aged 60 years and above. The subjects were divided into four groups according to the HCA model. Cognitive function was assessed by the Korean version of the mini-mental state examination (K-MMSE). A cross-sectional, factorial design was used in which the K-MMSE score was the dependent variable, with physical, mental, and social activity as one factor and health concern as the other. Analysis of covariance revealed significant differences in the K-MMSE score between all four groups after adjusting for age, sex, education, current smoking, and alcohol consumption for all subjects. The results suggest that having health concerns as well as physical, mental, or social activity is associated with cognitive function in the elderly.
