RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Esophageal cancer (EC) metastasized to the kidney is extremely rare clinically. Here, we present a case of metachronous renal metastasis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) through epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old patient, male, complained of left waist pain for 5 days, 11 months after radical esophagectomy. Laboratory tests revealed haematuria. Both CT and PET-CT scan showed retroperitoneal lymph nodes and left renal masses. Subsequently the patient received a left nephrectomy and lymph nodes resection, and squamous cell carcinoma of kidney and renal hilar lymph nodes was diagnosed, combined with morphology, medical history and immunophenotype, it was presumed to be metastasis of ESCC through the EMT pathway. CONCLUSIONS: The renal metastasis of squamous cell carcinoma should be considered in patients with history of EC, although this is very rare. Histopathological examination combined with immunochemical detection is helpful in differential diagnosis.

RESUMEN

Antimicrobial agents enter the ecological environment through animal excreta and disrupt metabolism in environmental microorganisms. Quorum sensing (QS) can help bacteria adapt to their surroundings. To explore how acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) can adjust the influence of florfenicol on nitrogen cycling and methane metabolism in anaerobic fermentation, a small indoor thermostatic anaerobic fermentation model was established by adding exogenous acylated homoserine lactone (AHL) signal molecules with florfenicol as the stress factor. Through bacterial function prediction by PICRUST, we found that the addition of AHL further increased the promotion of methanogenesis_by_CO2_reduction_with_H2 and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis by florfenicol. Before the third sampling, florfenicol significantly inhibited the enrichment of the denitrification pathway microbiota, whereas the addition of AHL significantly promoted the enrichment of the denitrification pathway microbiota. Functional annotation showed that florfenicol exposure stress significantly affected nitrogen and methane metabolism, and the addition of AHLs reduced the response of functional genes to florfenicol. All nitrogen cycling enzymes with significantly different abundances in treatment groups were substantially associated with methane-metabolizing enzymes. Glutamate metabolism is significant in the process of anaerobic fermentation, and is a correlation point between nitrogen and methane metabolism. In our experiment, AHL was the influencing factor at the highest latitude that directly regulates the metabolism of NO3--N and the degradation process of florfenicol. The addition of AHL curbed the inhibitory effect of florfenicol on some functional microbiota, improved the stability of fermentation microbiota, and weakened the impact of antibiotic residues by improving its degradation efficiency.

RESUMEN

With the rapid development of economy and society, the quality of groundwater is deteriorating under the dual influence of natural factors and anthropogenic factors, and it seriously threatens the safety of human drinking water. Identifying and analyzing the impact of anthropogenic activities is the key to solving this problem. Based on the groundwater problem in Changle County, Shandong Province, P.R. China, 43 groundwater samples were taken and tested. The statistical characteristics of the monitoring data, the groundwater chemical types, spatial distribution of groundwater, and influencing factors were analyzed by using enrichment factor, Mahalanobis distance, grey water footprint, and so on. The analysis results show that the overall water quality of Changle County is poor, and the main over-standard ions are Cl- , SO2- 4, and NO- 3. There is obvious spatial heterogeneity in the groundwater quality. The spatial variation of NO- 3 is affected by structural factors (topography, hydrology, etc.) and random factors (industrial, agricultural, etc.), and the spatial variability of NO- 3 is the most significant. Other water quality indicators are mainly affected by structural factors. The mass concentration of most ions decreases gradually from north to south, and the overall water quality in the southern region is better than that in the northern region. Thus, the supervision of chemical fertilizers and pesticides should be strengthened. The advanced treatment and reuse of wastewater from industrial parks should be promoted to improve the quality of groundwater and ensure the safety of human drinking water.

RESUMEN

Colistin has been used as the last-line antibiotic for Escherichia coli infections. Herein, we collected 102 E. coli isolates from diseased pigs and 204 from healthy ones in Henan province of China. Then, we screened antimicrobial resistance and mcr-1 of bacteria. There was 25.5% (78/306) mcr-1-positive porcine E. coli, in which 46 isolates (45.1%, 46/102) were obtained from diseased pigs; the others (15.7%, 32/204) were collected from healthy pigs (45.1% versus 15.7%, P=0.000). Meanwhile, the former presented more serious resistance to colistin, ceftiofur, cefquinome, gentamicin, amikacin, doxycycline, florfenicol, enrofloxacin, and olaquindox than those from healthy pigs, which were similar to the relations between isolates with or without mcr-1, except for amikacin and doxycycline. Also, the resistance profiles of mcr-1-positive E. coli were more extensive than those of mcr-1-negative isolates.

RESUMEN

To provide fundamental basis for the tree shrew models of human diseases, we examined and compared the physiological and biochemical indexes between wild and laboratory tree shrews. Blood samples were taken from 54 wild tree shrews that were housed in laboratory for 1-2 months, and from 54 first-generation of the laboratory tree shrews; each group had nearly equal male and female composition. Some of the first reported physiological and biochemical indexes were showed no significant differences between genders, and these indexes in laboratory tree shrews were as follows [medium (inter-quartile range) ]: CK 1449 (956) U/L, CTNI 5.94 (7.23) ug/L, TBA15.6 (19.7) µmol/L, FRUC 393.5 (80.8) µmol/L and LDL-C0.36 (0.32); and in the wild tree shrews, 986 (564) U/L, 4.01 (4.10) µg/L, 20.0 (20.6) µmol/L, 379.0 (104.0) µmol/L and 0.46 (0.23) mmol/L, respectively. In the laboratory tree shrews, the variations of physiological and biochemical indexes were smaller, but the mean values of some indicators related to liver and heart functions became higher. These data would be valuable for the development of tree shrew models of human diseases.
