RESUMEN

Rechargeable aluminum ion batteries (AIBs) have recently gained widespread research concern as energy storage technologies because of their advantages of being safe, economical, environmentally friendly, sustainable, and displaying high performance. Nevertheless, the intense Coulombic interactions between the Al3+ ions with high charge density and the lattice of the electrode body lead to poor cathode kinetics and limited cycle life in AIBs. This paper reviews the recent advances in the cathode design of AIBs to gain a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities and challenges presented by current AIBs. In addition, the advantages, limitations, and possible solutions of each cathode material are discussed. Finally, the future development prospect of the cathode materials is presented.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious vascular disease. Currently, no effective methods are available for treating DFUs. Pro-protein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) regulates lipid levels to promote atherosclerosis. However, the role of PCSK9 in DFUs remains unclear. In this study, we found that the expression of PCSK9 in endothelial cells (ECs) increased significantly under high glucose (HG) stimulation and in diabetic plasma and vessels. Specifically, PCSK9 promotes the E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase NEDD4 binding to vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2), which led to the ubiquitination of VEGFR2, resulting in its degradation and downregulation in ECs. Furthermore, PCSK9 suppresses the expression and activation of AKT, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), and ERK1/2, leading to decreased nitric oxide (NO) production and increased superoxide anion (O2._) generation, which impairs vascular endothelial function and angiogenesis. Importantly, using evolocumab to limit the increase in PCSK9 expression blocked the HG-induced inhibition of NO production and the increase in O2._ production, as well as inhibited the phosphorylation and expression of AKT, eNOS, and ERK1/2. Moreover, evolocumab improved vascular endothelial function and angiogenesis, and promoted wound healing in diabetes. Our findings suggest that targeting PCSK9 is a novel therapeutic approach for treating DFUs.

An upconversion fluorescence sensing platform was developed with upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as energy donors and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as energy acceptors, based on the FRET principle. They were used for quantitative detection of uranyl ions (UO22+) by amplifying the signal of the hybrid chain reaction (HCR). When UO22+ are introduced, the FRET between AuNPs and UCNPs can be modulated through a HCR in the presence of high concentrations of sodium chloride. This platform provides exceptional sensitivity, with a detection limit as low as 68 pM for UO22+ recognition. We have successfully validated the reliability of this method by analyzing authentic water samples, achieving satisfactory recoveries (89.00%-112.50%) that are comparable to those of ICP-MS. These results indicate that the developed sensing platform has the capability to identify trace UO22+ in complex environmental samples.

A new microsporidian disease of the pond-reared ridgetail white prawn, Palaemon carinicauda, was found in China. Light microscopy, pathology, and scanning electron microscopy showed that the parasite infected the host's skeletal muscle tissue and formed spherical sporophorous vesicles (SPOVs). Electron microscopy revealed that its merogonic life stages developed in direct contact with the host cytoplasm. The sporogonic life stages underwent octosporoblastic sporogony with the formation of eight uninucleate spores in each SPOV. Fresh SPOVs were 5.4 ±â€¯0.55 µm in diameter. The octospores were oval and measured 2.3 × 1.5 µm (fresh) and 1.96 × 1.17 µm (fixed). The isofilar polar filament was coiled with 9-10 turns and arranged in two rows. Phylogenetic analysis based on the SSU rRNA gene suggests that this microsporidium has close affinities with members of the genera Potaspora and Apotaspora, but represents an independent generic taxon. We therefore propose the establishment of a new genus and species (Paospora carinifang n. gen., n. sp.) within the family Spragueidae. We also propose a taxonomic revision to transfer Potaspora macrobrachium to this new genus and reclassify it as Paospora macrobrachium comb. nov.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma accounts for 80% of primary liver cancers, is the most common primary liver malignancy. Hepatocellular carcinoma is the third leading cause of tumor-related deaths worldwide, with a 5-year survival rate of approximately 18%. Chemotherapy, although commonly used for hepatocellular carcinoma treatment, is limited by systemic toxicity and drug resistance. Improving targeted delivery of chemotherapy drugs to tumor cells without causing systemic side effects is a current research focus. Chitosan, a biopolymer derived from chitin, possesses good biocompatibility and biodegradability, making it suitable for drug delivery. Enhanced chitosan formulations retain the anti-tumor properties while improving stability. Chitosan-based biomaterials promote hepatocellular carcinoma apoptosis, exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, inhibit tumor angiogenesis, and improve extracellular matrix remodeling for enhanced anti-tumor therapy. Methods: We summarized published experimental papers by querying them. Results and Conclusions: This review discusses the physicochemical properties of chitosan, its application in hepatocellular carcinoma treatment, and the challenges faced by chitosan-based biomaterials.

It offers bright prospects to develop non-Pt group metal (non-PGM) electrocatalysts in the area of energy storage and conversion. Herein, we reported a simple spatial isolation strategy to synthesize Co-based electrocatalysts, using partially substituted Zn atoms in a ZnCo-ZIF precursor. The "fence" effect that originated from the partially substituted Zn atoms can yield a better isolation of Co atoms, achieving selective loading of Co species on nitrogen-doped porous carbon varying from nanoparticles to single atoms. The low boiling point of Zn enables abundant porous structures to the N-doped carbon substrate after pyrolysis. The best performing single-atom Co catalyst (Co-SAs/N-C) exhibits excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity in alkaline media. As an illustration, the rechargeable liquid Zn-air battery incorporating the Co-SAs/N-C catalyst demonstrates a substantial open circuit voltage of 1.49 V, a high specific capacity of 689.3 mAh g-1, and remarkable cycling stability over 200 h. This study paves the way for the strategic development of non-PGM electrocatalysts in battery applications.

Temperature-dependent plastic deformation behaviors of single crystals of quaternary and ternary equiatomic medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) belonging to the Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni system were investigated in compression at temperatures in the range 9 K to 1373 K. Their critical resolved shear stresses (CRSSs) increase with decreasing temperature below room temperature. There is also a dulling of the temperature dependence of CRSS below 77 K due to dislocation inertial effects that we attribute to a decrease in the phonon drag coefficient. These behaviors were compared with those of previously investigated single crystals of the equiatomic Cr-Co-Ni and Cr-Fe-Co-Ni MEAs, and the equiatomic Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni high-entropy alloy (HEA). The temperature dependence of CRSS and the apparent activation volumes below room temperature can be well described by conventional thermal activation theories of face-centered cubic (FCC) alloys. Above 673 K, there is a small increase in CRSS, which we believe is due to elastic interactions between solutes and mobile dislocations, the so-called Portevin-Le Chatelier (PL) effect. The CRSS at 0 K was obtained by extrapolation of fitted CRSS vs. temperature curves and compared with predictions from solid solution strengthening models of HEA and MEAs.


The novelty of our work entitled 'Analysis of the temperature-dependent plastic deformation of single crystals of quinary, quaternary and ternary equiatomic high- and medium-entropy alloys of the Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni system' can be summarized as follows: The temperature dependences of CRSS were experimentally deduced from bulk single crystals of the six MEAs for the first time, so that fair comparison among the FCC HEA/MEAs is made.

Background: Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) is a commonly used method to diagnose pelvic lymph node metastasis (PLNM) in prostate cancer (PCa) patients, but there are few comparative studies on mpMRI and 68Ga-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) in locally advanced PCa (LAPC) patients. Therefore, we designed a retrospective study to compare the diagnostic value of 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT and mpMRI for PLNM of LAPC. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 50 patients with LAPC who underwent radical prostatectomy (RP) in Tongji Hospital from 2021 to 2023. All patients underwent PET/CT and mpMRI examination, and were diagnosed as LAPC before surgery, followed by robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy or laparoscopic RP and extended pelvic lymph node dissection (ePLND). Routine postoperative pathological examination was performed. According to the results, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT and mpMRI for the diagnosis of PLNM of LAPC were compared. Results: Among the 50 patients, the mean age was 65.5±10.3 years, the preoperative total serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) was 30.7±12.3 ng/mL, and the Gleason score was 7 [7, 8]. The difference in diagnostic efficacy between 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT and mpMRI in the preoperative diagnosis of PLNM of PCa was determined by postoperative pathological results. Based on the number of patients who developed PLNM, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT were as follows: 93.75%, 100.00%, 100.00%, 97.14%, and 68.75%, 97.06%, 91.67%, 86.84% for mpMRI, respectively. Based on the number of pelvic metastatic lymph nodes, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT were 95.24%, 100.00%, 100.00%, 99.48%, and 65.08%, 99.13%, 89.13%, 96.30% for mpMRI, respectively. It turned out that PET/CT was more sensitive than mpMRI in detecting PLNM of PCa, and the difference was statistically significant. Conclusions: 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT is more sensitive than mpMRI in the detection of PLNM in patients with LAPC. It is a promising method in the diagnosis and preoperative assessment of PLNM in LAPC.

The growing field of computational chemistry and artificial intelligence is drawing unprecedented attention in drug discovery. However, the underrepresentation of female scientists persists in the field. While the gender disparity is acknowledged in academic settings, the issue is less addressed and intensifies in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry both at the entry-level and leadership positions. At Viva Biotech, we challenge this norm: over 60% of the full-time employees in our computational chemistry group are women, a testament of our commitment to the pursuit of gender equality. We share our vision of the evolving role of computational chemistry in drug discovery and where women stand and rise in the field. In this article, we discuss how we engage female empowerment with tactical approaches and from personal experiences. The intention is to offer actionable guidance for female computational chemists at early career stages to bring visibility to their impacts, and ascent to senior positions.

OBJECTIVES: Environmental risk factors may contribute to sleep-disordered breathing. We investigated the association between indoor particulate matter ≤2.5µm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) and sleep-disordered breathing in children in an urban US community. METHODS: The sample consisted of children aged 6-12years living in predominantly low-income neighborhoods in Boston, Massachusetts. Indoor PM2.5 was measured in participants' main living areas for 7days using the Environmental Multipollutant Monitoring Assembly device. High indoor PM2.5 exposure was defined as greater than the sample weekly average 80th percentile level (≥15.6 µg/m3). Sleep-disordered breathing was defined as an Apnea-Hypopnea-Index (AHI) or Oxygen-Desaturation-Index (ODI) (≥3% desaturation) of ≥5 events/hour. Habitual loud snoring was defined as caregiver-report of loud snoring (most or all the time each week) over the past 4weeks. We examined the associations of PM2.5 with sleep-disordered breathing or snoring using logistic regression adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS: The sample included 260 children (mean age 9.6years; 41% female), with 32% (n = 76) classified as having sleep-disordered breathing. In a logistic regression model adjusted for socioeconomics and seasonality, children exposed to high indoor PM2.5 levels (n = 53) had a 3.53-fold increased odds for sleep-disordered breathing (95%CI: 1.57, 8.11, p = .002) compared to those with lower indoor PM2.5. This association persisted after additional adjustments for physical activity, outdoor PM2.5, environmental tobacco smoke, and health characteristics. Similar associations were observed for snoring and indoor PM2.5. CONCLUSIONS: Children with higher indoor PM2.5 exposure had greater odds of sleep-disordered breathing and habitual loud snoring, suggesting that indoor air quality contributes to sleep disparities.

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are one of the most studied groups of arthropods worldwide due to their high transmission capacity for pathogens, including viruses and parasites. During June to October 2022, the prevalence of mosquito species in 12 intensive pig farms from 12 representative administrative regions in Hunan province of China was investigated using traps with ultraviolet light. All collected mosquitoes were counted and identified to species according to morphological and molecular methods. A total of 4,443 mosquito specimens were collected in the pig farms, and they represented one family, four genera and nine species. Culex pipiens pipiens (24%) was the most common mosquito species, followed by Armigeres subalbatus (23.4%) and Culex tritaeniorhynchus (20.6%). Phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial cox1 sequences revealed all mosquito species from present study grouping into distinct monophyletic groups corresponding to nine known mosquito species with strongly supported. The results of the present investigation have implications for the ongoing control of mosquito infestation in pig farms in Hunan province, China. This is the first report of mosquito populations in intensive pig farms in Hunan province, China.

BACKGROUND: Obesity in children and adolescents is a serious problem, and the efficacy of exercise therapy for these patients is controversial. AIM: To assess the efficacy of exercise training on overweight and obese children based on glucose metabolism indicators and inflammatory markers. METHODS: The PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases were searched for randomized controlled trials related to exercise training and obese children until October 2023. The meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.3 software to evaluate the efficacy of exercise therapy on glucose metabolism indicators and inflammatory markers in obese children. RESULTS: In total, 1010 patients from 28 studies were included. Exercise therapy reduced the levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG) [standardized mean difference (SMD): -0.78; 95% confidence interval (CI): -1.24 to -0.32, P = 0.0008], fasting insulin (FINS) (SMD: -1.55; 95%CI: -2.12 to -0.98, P < 0.00001), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (SMD: -1.58; 95%CI: -2.20 to -0.97, P < 0.00001), interleukin-6 (IL-6) (SMD: -1.31; 95%CI: -2.07 to -0.55, P = 0.0007), C-reactive protein (CRP) (SMD: -0.64; 95%CI: -1.21 to -0.08, P = 0.03), and leptin (SMD: -3.43; 95%CI: -5.82 to -1.05, P = 0.005) in overweight and obese children. Exercise training increased adiponectin levels (SMD: 1.24; 95%CI: 0.30 to 2.18, P = 0.01) but did not improve tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels (SMD: -0.80; 95%CI: -1.77 to 0.18, P = 0.11). CONCLUSION: In summary, exercise therapy improves glucose metabolism by reducing levels of FBG, FINS, HOMA-IR, as well as improves inflammatory status by reducing levels of IL-6, CRP, leptin, and increasing levels of adiponectin in overweight and obese children. There was no statistically significant effect between exercise training and levels of TNF-α. Additional long-term trials should be conducted to explore this therapeutic perspective and confirm these results.

Glycerol dehydratase is the key and rate-limiting enzyme in the 1,3-propanediol synthesis pathway of Klebsiella pneumoniae, which determined the producing rate and yield of 1,3-propanediol. However, the expression regulation mechanism of glycerol dehydratase gene dhaB remains poorly unknown. In this study, a histone-like nucleoid-structuring (H-NS) protein was identified and characterized as the positive transcription regulator for dhaB expression in K. pneumoniae 2e, which exhibited high tolerance against crude glycerol in our previous study. Deletion of hns gene significantly decreased the transcription level of dhaB in K. pneumoniae 2e, which led to a remarkable defect on strain growth, glycerol dehydratase activity, and 3-hydroxypropanal production during glycerol fermentation. The transcription level of dhaB was significantly up-regulated in crude glycerol relative to pure glycerol, while the inactivation of H-NS resulted in more negative effect for transcription level of dhaB in the former. Though the H-NS expression level was almost comparable in both substrates, its multimer state was reduced in crude glycerol relative to pure glycerol, suggesting that the oligomerization state of H-NS might have contributed for positive regulation of dhaB expression. Furthermore, electrophoretic mobility shift and DNase I footprinting assays showed that H-NS could directly bind to the upstream promoter region of dhaB by recognizing the AT-rich region. These findings provided new insight into the transcriptional regulation mechanism of H-NS for glycerol dehydratase expression in K. pneumoniae, which might offer new target for engineering bacteria to industrially produce 1,3-propanediol.IMPORTANCEThe biological production of 1,3-propanediol from glycerol by microbial fermentation shows great promising prospect on industrial application. Glycerol dehydratase catalyzes the penultimate step in glycerol metabolism and is regarded as one of the key and rate-limiting enzymes for 1,3-propanediol production. H-NS was reported as a pleiotropic modulator with negative effects on gene expression in most studies. Here, we reported for the first time that the expression of glycerol dehydratase gene is positively regulated by the H-NS. The results provide insight into a novel molecular mechanism of H-NS for positive regulation of glycerol dehydratase gene expression in K. pneumoniae, which holds promising potential for facilitating construction of engineering highly efficient 1,3-propanediol-producing strains.

Jiedu Tongluo (JDTL) Decoction is a traditional Chinese medicine formula containing three herbal ingredients. It is widely used to treat myocardial fibrosis (MF). This study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanism of JDTL Decoction's effect on MF. In this study, 6 compounds of JDTL Decoction were identified by HPLC. HE and Masson staining showed that in the isoproterenol hydrochloride-induced MF rat model, JDTL treatment can protect the myocardial structure and inhibit the expression of collagen III. The immunohistochemistry results also showed that JDTL treatment can significantly reduce vimentin and α-SMA expression, TGF-ß1 expression, and phosphorylation of Smad2/3 in the rat MF model. RCF, a rat cardiac fibroblast cell line, was used as a tool for in vitro study. Using the methods of hydroxyproline detection, MTT, wound healing test, western blot, and double immunofluorescence staining, our in vitro study confirmed the inhibitory effects of JDTL Decoction on proliferation, migration, and trans-difference ability of RCF cells, as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying the inhibitory effects of JDTL Decoction, including the inhibition of TGF-ß1/Smad2/3 pathway through down-regulation of TGF-ß1 expression and phosphorylation of Smad2/3 as well as the inhibition of the expression of vimentin and α-SMA. In conclusion, JDTL Decoction can prolong the process of myocardial fibrosis through the inhibition of the TGFß1/Smad2/3 signaling pathway.

The Ras family genes are proto-oncogenes that are highly conserved from Drosophila to humans. In Drosophila, RasV12 is a constitutively activated form of the Ras oncoprotein, and its function in cell-cycle progression is context dependent. However, how it influences the cell cycle of female germline stem cells (GSCs) still remains unknown. Using both wild-type GSCs and bam mutant GSC-like cells as model systems, here we determined that RasV12 overexpression promotes GSC division, not growth, opposite to that in somatic wing disc cells. Ras performs this function through activating the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling. This signaling is activated specifically in the M phase of mitotic germ cells, including both wild-type GSCs and bam mutant GSC-like cells. Furthermore, RasV12 overexpression triggers polyploid nurse cells to die through inducing mitotic stress. Given the similarities between Drosophila and mammalian GSCs, we propose that the Ras/MAPK signaling also promotes mammalian GSC division.

Electrified synthesis of high-value organonitrogen chemicals from low-cost carbon- and nitrogen-based feedstocks offers an economically and environmentally appealing alternative to traditional thermocatalytic methods. However, the intricate electrochemical reactions at electrode surfaces pose significant challenges in controlling selectivity and activity, especially for producing complex substances such as N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). Herein, we tackle this challenge by developing relay catalysis for efficient DMF production using a composite WO2-NiOOH/Ni catalyst with two distinctive active sites. Specifically, WO2 selectively promotes dimethylamine (DMA) electrooxidation to produce strongly surface-bound (CH3)2N*, while nearby NiOOH facilitates methanol electrooxidation to yield more weakly bound *CHO. The disparity in binding energetics of the key C- and N-intermediates expedites C-N coupling at the WO2-NiOOH interface. In situ infrared spectroscopy with isotope-labeling experiments, quasi-in situ electron paramagnetic resonance trapping experiments, and electrochemical operating experiments revealed the C-N coupling mechanism and enhanced DMF-synthesis selectivity and activity. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and postreaction transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies verified the stability of WO2-NiOOH/Ni during extended electrochemical operation. A Faradaic efficiency of ∼50% and a production rate of 438 µmol cm-2 h-1 were achieved at an industrially relevant current density of 100 mA cm-2 over an 80 h DMF production period. This study introduces a new paradigm for developing electrothermo relay catalysis for the sustainable and efficient synthesis of valuable organic chemicals with industrial potential.

Germ cells mutant for bam or bgcn are locked in a germline stem cell (GSC)-like state, leading to tumor-like overgrowth in Drosophila ovaries. Our previous studies have demonstrated that germline overgrowth in bam mutants can be suppressed by defects in the miRNA pathway but enhanced by a null mutation in hippo. However, the genetic epistasis between the miRNA and Hippo pathways still remains unknown. Here, we determined that the miRNA pathway acts downstream of the Hippo pathway in regulating this process. Germ cells mutant for bam or bgcn and defective in both pathways divide very slowly, phenocopying those defective only in the miRNA pathway. In addition, we found that Yki, a key oncoprotein in the Hippo pathway, promotes the growth of both wild-type germ cells and bam mutant GSC-like cells. Like wild-type GSCs, bam mutant GSC-like cells predominantly stay in the G2 phase. Remarkably, many of those defective in the miRNA pathway are arrested before entering this phase. Furthermore, our studies identified bantam as a critical miRNA promoting germline overgrowth in bam or bgcn mutants. Taken together, these findings establish a genetic circuitry controlling Drosophila female germline overgrowth.

Backgrounds: Hematocrit is found an independent risk factor for acute kidney injury (AKI) in certain patients, but this effect in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is unclear. We aim to identify the relationship between hematocrit and AKI in patients with AMI. Methods: The patient data for the discovery and validation cohorts were extracted from the electronic Intensive Care Unit database and the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III database, respectively, to identify the relationship between hematocrit and AKI. With normal hematocrit as the reference, patients were divided into five groups based on the initial hematocrit value. The primary outcome was AKI during hospitalization. A multivariable logistic regression and a marginal effect analysis were used to evaluate the relationship between hematocrit and AKI. Results: In this study, a total of 9692 patients diagnosed with AMI were included, with 7712 patients in the discovery cohort and 1980 patients in the validation cohort. In the discovery cohort, hematocrit in 30-33%, 27-30% or < 27% were independent risk factors for AKI in the multivariate logistic analysis, with odds ratio (OR) of 1.774 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.203-2.617, p = 0.004), 1.834 (95% CI: 1.136-2.961, p = 0.013) and 2.577 (95% CI: 1.510-4.397, p < 0.001), respectively. Additionally, in the validation cohort, low hematocrit levels independently contributed to an increased risk of AKI among patients with AMI. During the analysis of marginal effects, a significant negative linear relationship between hematocrit levels and AKI was observed. Conclusions: Decreased hematocrit was an independent risk factor for AKI in patients with AMI. The relationship between hematocrit and AKI was negative linear.

Background: Women are frequently underrepresented in clinical trials and databases focusing on ventricular arrhythmias (VAs). However, understanding sex-based differences in risk factors and the prognosis of VAs is essential for tailoring personalized prevention and treatment strategies. This study aimed to investigate sex differences in the epidemiology, risk factors, and prognosis of VAs in patients with sepsis. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive analysis of 27,139 sepsis patients (mean [SD] age, 66.6 [16.2] years; 15,626 [57.6%] male), among whom 1136 (4.2%) developed VAs during their hospitalization. We evaluated VAs incidence and potential risk elements in both male and female patients, along with in-hospital mortality. Results: Men had a significantly higher likelihood of developing VAs compared to women (odds ratio [OR]: 1.70, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.50-1.94, p < 0.001). In the case of non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM), the association with VAs was stronger in men than in women (relative risk ratio [RRR] = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.10-2.40, interaction p = 0.014). Furthermore, we observed significant sex-specific interactions in the relationship between incident VAs, congestive heart failure (CHF) (RRR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.03-1.76, interaction p = 0.031), and pneumonia (RRR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.02-1.74, interaction p = 0.036) when considering the adjusted model. The presence of VAs was associated with a nearly twofold increase in the risk of in-hospital mortality, a result that was observed in both sexes. Conclusions: In sepsis patients, the emergence of VAs independently escalates the risk of in-hospital mortality, with a notable correlation between male sex and an increased VAs risk. The impacts of CHF, NICM and pneumonia on incident VAs were significantly influenced by sex.
