BACKGROUND: Previous research has supported the presence of an association between high glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The objective of the present study was to determine whether increased HbA1c levels are associated with high CVD prevalence among nondiabetics. Furthermore, we aimed to explore the possible interaction of HbA1c levels and age in regard to CVD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data of 28,534 adult participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2018. The association between HbA1c and CVD was assessed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models. Propensity score matching was used to reduce selection bias. Subgroup analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were used to further characterize the association between HbA1c levels and CVD. We modeled additive interactions to further assess the relationship between HbA1c levels and age. RESULTS: In the multivariate logistic regression model, a positive association was found between CVD and increased HbA1c levels (highest quartile [Q4] vs. lowest quartile [Q1]: odds ratio [OR] = 1.277, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.111-1.469, P = 0.001). In the stratified analyses, the adjusted association between HbA1c and CVD was significant for those younger than 55 years (Q4 vs. Q1: OR = 1.437, 95% CI = 1.099-1.880, P = 0.008). RCS did not reveal a nonlinear relationship between HbA1c levels and CVD among nondiabetics (P for nonlinearity = 0.609). Additionally, a high HbA1c level was favorably connected with old age on CVD, with a synergistic impact. CONCLUSIONS: Increased HbA1c levels were associated with high CVD prevalence among nondiabetics. However, we still need to carefully explain the effect of age on the relationship between HbA1c and CVD in nondiabetic population. Given the correlations of HbA1c with CVDs and CV events, HbA1c might be a useful indicator for predicting CVDs and CV events in the nondiabetic population.

AIMS: The findings from previous epidemiological studies of the association between regional body fat and depressive symptoms have been unclear. We aimed to determine the association between the body fat in different regions and depressive symptoms based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS: This study included 3393 participants aged ≥ 20 years from the NHANES performed during 2011-2018. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The fat mass (FM) was measured in different regions using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to determine the total FM, trunk FM, arm FM, and leg FM. The FM index (FMI) was obtained by dividing the FM in kilograms by the square of the body height in meters. Weighted data were calculated in accordance with analytical guidelines. Linear logistic regression models were used to quantify the association between regional FMI and depressive symptoms. Univariate and stratified analyses were also performed. RESULTS: The participants in this study comprised 2066 males and 1327 females. There were 404 (11.91%) participants with depressive symptoms, who were aged 40.89 ± 11.74 years and had a body mass index of 30.07 ± 7.82 kg/m². A significant association was found between total FMI and depressive symptoms. In the fully adjusted multivariate regression model, a higher total FMI (odds ratio = 2.18, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.08-4.39) was related to a higher risk of depressive symptoms, while increased total FMI (ß = 1.55, 95% CI = 0.65-2.44, p = 0.001), trunk FMI (ß = 0.57, 95% CI = 0.04-1.10, p = 0.036), and arm FMI (ß = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.33-1.59, p = 0.004) were significantly associated with PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) scores, whereas the leg FMI was not (p = 0.102). The weighted association between total FMI and depressive symptoms did not differ significantly between most of the subpopulations (all p values for interaction > 0.05). The risk of having depression was higher in individuals who were non-Hispanic Whites, smokers, drinkers, obese, and had diabetes and thyroid problems (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the population with a higher regional FMI is more likely to have depressive symptoms, especially in those who also have an increased total FMI. The association is more pronounced in individuals who are smokers, drinkers, obese, and have diabetes and thyroid problems.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and serum sex hormone concentrations in female adults (never smokers and former smokers). DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis. SETTING: US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2013-2016. OUTCOME MEASURES: Serum sex hormone measures included total testosterone (TT) and oestradiol (E2), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), the ratio of TT and E2 and free androgen index (FAI). Isotope dilution-liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was used to measure serum TT and E2. SHBG was measured using immunoassay. The ratio of TT and E2 and FAI were calculated. SHS exposure was defined as serum cotinine concentration of 0.05-10 ng/mL. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 622 female participants aged ≥20 years were included in the analysis. RESULTS: For never smokers, a doubling of serum cotinine concentration was associated with a 2.85% (95% CI 0.29% to 5.47%) increase in TT concentration and a 6.29% (95% CI 0.68% to 12.23%) increase in E2 in fully adjusted models. The never smokers in the highest quartile (Q4) of serum cotinine level exhibited a 10.30% (95% CI 0.78% to 20.72%) increase in TT concentration and a 27.75% (95% CI 5.17% to 55.17%) increase in E2 compared with those in the lowest quartile (Q1). For former smokers, SHBG was reduced by 4.36% (95% CI -8.47% to -0.07%, p for trend=0.049) when the serum cotinine level was doubled, and the SHBG of those in Q4 was reduced by 17.58% (95% CI -31.33% to -1.07%, p for trend=0.018) compared with those in Q1. CONCLUSION: SHS was associated with serum sex hormone concentrations among female adults. In never smokers, SHS was associated with increased levels of TT and E2. In former smokers, SHS was associated with decreased SHBG levels.

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for plant growth, and most plants absorb it as nitrate. AtNRG2 has been reported to play an important role in nitrate regulation. In this study, we investigated the functions of AtNRG2 family members of Arabidopsis thaliana and maize in nitrate signalling and metabolism. Our results showed that both AtNRG2.10 and AtNRG2.15 regulated nitrate signalling and metabolism. Overexpression of AtNRG2.11 (AtNRG2) could promote plant growth and improve nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). In addition, the maize genome harbors 23 ZmNRG2 members. We detected the expression of these genes treated with nitrate and the expression of four genes was strongly induced with ZmNRG2.7 having the highest levels. Overexpression of ZmNRG2.7 in the atnrg2 mutant could restore the defects of atnrg2, suggesting that ZmNRG2.7 is involved in nitrate signalling and metabolism. Moreover, the overexpression lines of ZmNRG2.7 showed increased biomass and NUE. These findings demonstrate that at least a part of NRG2 family genes in Arabidopsis and maize regulate nitrate signalling and provide a molecular basis for improving the NUE of crops.

Introduction: Ligninolytic bacteria can secrete extracellular enzymes to depolymerize lignin into small-molecular aromatics that are subsequently metabolized and funneled into the TCA cycle. Carbohydrates, which are the preferred carbon sources of bacteria, influence the metabolism of lignin-derived aromatics through bacteria. Methods: In this study, untargeted metabolomics and transcriptomics analyses were performed to investigate the effect of carbohydrates on lignin degradation mediated by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MN-13, a strain with lignin-degrading activity that was isolated in our previous work. Results: The results demonstrated that the cell growth of the MN-13 strain and lignin removal were promoted when carbohydrates such as glucose and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose were added to an alkaline lignin-minimal salt medium (AL-MSM) culture. Metabolomics analysis showed that lignin depolymerization took place outside the cells, and the addition of glucose regulated the uptake and metabolism of lignin-derived monomers and activated the downstream metabolism process in cells. In the transcriptomics analysis, 299 DEGs were screened after 24 h of inoculation in AL-MSM with free glucose and 2 g/L glucose, respectively, accounting for 8.3% of the total amount of annotated genes. These DEGs were primarily assigned to 30 subcategories, including flagellar assembly, the PTS system, RNA degradation, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, the TCA cycle, pyruvate metabolism, and tryptophan metabolism. These subcategories were closely associated with the cell structure, generation of cellular energy, and precursors for biosynthetic pathways, based on a - log 10 (P adjust) value in the KEGG pathway analysis. Conclusion: In summary, the addition of glucose increased lignin degradation mediated by the MN-13 strain through regulating glycolysis, TCA cycle, and central carbon metabolism.

BACKGROUND: A fetus with increased copy number of chromosome 20 was identified by NIPT. Here we utilize several genetic tests and analyses to illuminate the etiology of such aneuploidy. METHODS: Amniotic fluid cells were extracted from pregnant woman and sent for karyotype and chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA). Trio pedigree analysis was conducted with Chromosome Analysis Suite and uniparental disomy (UPD)-tool software. RESULTS: CMA identified consistent results, which were 2 regions of homozygosity: arr[GRCh37]20p12.2q11.1 (11265096_26266313)hmz and arr[GRCh37]20q11.21q13.2(29510306_54430467)hmz. The trio pedigree analysis discovered that the fetal chromosome 20 was the entire maternal UPD mosaic with isodisomy and heterodisomy. CONCLUSIONS: When a large segment of chromosome is homozygous, appropriate genetic tests are required to find the potential mechanisms for UPD formation.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of low-frequency electroacupuncture (EA) on glucose and lipid disturbances in a rat model of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) characterized by insulin resistance (IR) and hepatic steatosis. METHODS: The PCOS rat model was induced by continuous administration of letrozole (LET) combined with a high-fat diet (HFD). Female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into the following four groups: control, control + EA, LET + HFD and LET + HFD + EA. EA was administered five or six times a week with a maximum of 20 treatment sessions. Body weight, estrous cyclicity, hormonal status, glucose and insulin tolerance, lipid profiles, liver inflammation factors, liver morphology and changes in the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-K)/Akt (protein kinase B) pathway were evaluated. RESULTS: The rat model presented anovulatory cycles, increased body weight, elevated testosterone, abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism, IR, liver inflammation, hepatic steatosis and dysregulation of the insulin-mediated PI3-K/Akt signaling axis. EA reduced fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, area under the curve for glucose, homeostasis model assessment of IR indices, triglycerides and free fatty acids, and alleviated hepatic steatosis. Furthermore, low-frequency EA downregulated mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6, upregulated mRNA expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-α, increased protein expression of phosphorylated (p)-Akt (Ser473), p-glycogen synthase kinase (GSK) 3ß (Ser9) and glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4), increased the ratio of p-GSK3ß to GSK3ß and downregulated protein expression of GSK3ß. CONCLUSION: An obese PCOS rat model with IR and hepatic steatosis was successfully established by the combination of LET and HFD. EA improved dysfunctional glucose and lipid metabolism in this PCOS-IR rat model, and the molecular mechanism appeared to involve regulation of the expression of key molecules of the PI3-K/Akt insulin signaling pathway in the liver.

BACKGROUND: Current drug treatments for dementia aren't effective. Studying gene-environment interactions can help develop personalized early intervention strategies for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, no studies have examined the relationship between screen-based sedentary activities and genetic susceptibility to AD risk, and further understanding of the causal relationship is also crucial. METHODS: This study included 462,524 participants from the UK Biobank with a follow-up of 13.6 years. Participants' screen-based sedentary activities time was categorized into three groups based on recorded time: ≥ 4 h/day, 2-3 h/day, and ≤ 1 h/day. Cox proportional risk models were used to analyze the association between computer use/TV viewing groups and the risk of all-cause dementia, AD and vascular dementia (VD). Generalized linear model (GLM) were used to examine the relationship between screen-based sedentary activities and brain structure. Bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to validate the causal relationship between TV viewing and AD. RESULTS: Compared to TV viewing ≤ 1 h/day, 1)TV viewing 2-3 h/day was correlated with a higher risk of all-cause dementia (HR = 1.09, 95% CI:1.01-1.18, P < 0.05), and TV viewing ≥ 4 h/day was associated with a higher risk of all-cause dementia (HR = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.19-1.40, P < 0.001), AD (HR = 1.25, 95% CI:1.1-1.42, P < 0.001), and VD (HR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.04-1.49, P < 0.05); 2) TV viewing ≥ 4 h/day was correlated with a higher AD risk at intermediate (HR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.03-1.75, P < 0.001) and high AD genetic risk score (AD-GRS) (HR = 2.18, 95% CI: 1.65-2.87, P < 0.001);3) TV viewing 2-3 h/day [ß = (-94.8), 95% CI: (-37.9) -(-151.7), P < 0.01] and TV viewing ≥ 4 h/day [ß = (-92.94), 95% CI: (-17.42) -(-168.46), P < 0.05] were correlated with a less hippocampus volume. In addition, a causal effect of TV viewing times was observed on AD analyzed using MR Egger (OR = 5.618, 95%CI:1.502-21.013, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There was a causal effect between TV viewing time and AD analyzed using bidirectional MR, and more TV viewing time exposure was correlated with a higher AD risk. Therefore, it is recommended that people with intermediate and high AD-GRS should control their TV viewing time to be less than 4 h/ day or even less than 1 h/day.

BACKGROUND: The role of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as a mediator in the association between various unhealthy lifestyles and major adverse cardiovascular events and all-cause death remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study used data from the UK Biobank, with follow-up until the end of 2021. It involved the calculation of unweighted and weighted lifestyle scores using the Cox model to classify participants on the basis of these scores. Additionally, the research assessed the mediation effect proportion of NAFLD using the difference method and examined the interaction and joint effects of lifestyle and NAFLD on health outcomes. Among the 134 616 enrolled participants, 4024 had records of major adverse cardiovascular events, while among the 130 144 participants included in the analysis of all-cause death, 6697 deaths occurred. The proportions of the association between overall lifestyle and major adverse cardiovascular events mediated by NAFLD were 19.4% and 21.7% (95% CI, 16.2-22.6 and 17.8-25.7) for scores 1 and 2, respectively, and those for all-cause death were 14.1% and 10.1% (95% CI, 11.3-17.1 and 7.9-12.2). After fully adjusting for traditional cardiovascular risk factors, the mediating effects declined across both outcomes. The associations between overall lifestyle and outcomes were stronger among those of the non-NAFLD group, and significant interactions were observed between overall lifestyle and NAFLD status. The joint analysis revealed that patients with NAFLD with unhealthy lifestyle had the highest risk of major adverse cardiovascular events and all-cause death. CONCLUSIONS: Improving lifestyle and addressing metabolic risk factors are essential for cardiovascular risk management in patients with NAFLD.

Background: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) in patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) is rare. The prognosis of the sole serviceable hearing ear is very important for these patients. However, the clinical characteristics and prognosis of SSNHL in SSD patients are not well-documented. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the clinical features and treatment outcomes of SSNHL in SSD patients. Methods: Clinical data of 36 SSD patients and 116 non-SSD patients with unilateral SSNHL from January 2013 to December 2022 were retrospectively investigated. The clinical characteristics of the SSD patients were analyzed. All SSD patients were treated with intratympanic steroids plus intravenous steroids. Pure-tone average (PTA) and word recognition score (WRS) before and after treatment were recorded. The hearing recovery of SSNHL in SSD patients in comparison with non-SSD patients was explored. Auditory outcomes in SSD patients with different etiologies were also compared. Results: Initial hearing threshold showed no significant differences between the SSD group and the non-SSD group (66.41 ± 24.64 dB HL vs. 69.21 ± 31.48 dB HL, p = 0.625). The SSD group had a higher post-treatment hearing threshold (median (interquartile range, IQR) 53.13(36.56) dB HL) than the non-SSD group (median 32.50(47.5) dB HL, p < 0.01). Hearing gains (median 8.75(13.00) dB) and the rate of significant recovery (13.89%) were lower in the SSD group than in the non-SSD group (median 23.75(34.69) dB, 45.69%). The etiology of SSD was classified as SSNHL, special types of infection, chronic otitis media, and unknown causes. SSNHL accounted for the maximum proportion (38.9%) of causes of SSD in the SSD group. Hearing gains were lower in the SSNHL-SSD group than in other causes of the SSD group. A binary logistic regression analysis demonstrated that SSD serves as an indicator of unfavorable hearing recovery outcomes (OR = 5.264, p < 0.01). Conclusion: The prognosis of SSNHL in SSD patients is unsatisfactory. SSNHL accounts for the maximum proportion of causes of SSD in this group of patients. For SSD patients caused by SSNHL, less hearing improvement after treatment was expected when SSNHL occurred in the contralateral ear in comparison with SSD patients with other causes.

Optimizing the interatomic distance of dual sites to realize C-C bond breaking of ethanol is critical for the commercialization of direct ethanol fuel cells. Herein, the concept of holding long-range dual sites is proposed to weaken the reaction barrier of C-C cleavage during the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). The obtained long-range Rh-O-Pt dual sites achieve a high current density of 7.43 mA/cm2 toward EOR, which is 13.3 times that of Pt/C, as well as remarkable stability. Electrochemical in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicates that long-range Rh-O-Pt dual sites can increase the selectivity of C1 products and suppress the generation of a CO intermediate. Theoretical calculations further disclose that redistribution of the surface-localized electron around Rh-O-Pt can promote direct oxidation of -OH, accelerating C-C bond cleavage. This work provides a promising strategy for designing oxygen-bridged long-range dual sites to tune the activity and selectivity of complicated catalytic reactions.

Background: Hypertension is a significant chronic disease that has been linked with bone mineral density (BMD) in various studies. However, the conclusions are contradictory. The purpose of our study was to identify the bone mineral density (BMD) of postmenopausal females and males older than 50 years with hypertension. Methods: This cross-sectional study of 4,306 participants from the 2005-2010 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey explored the relationship between BMD and hypertension. Participants who had a mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥140 mmHg, or a mean diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥90 mmHg, or were taking any prescribed medicine for high blood pressure were defined as having hypertension. BMD values were measured at the femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae as the primary outcome. Weight general linear model was used to describe the status of BMD in patients with hypertension. Weighted multivariate regression analysis was conducted to demonstrate the association between hypertension and BMD. Weighted restricted cubic spline (RCS) was used to assess the relationship between BMD and SBP and DBP. Results: Our study found that there was a positive association between hypertension and lumbar BMD and the lumbar BMD was significantly higher in the presence of hypertension than in the control group in both males (1.072 vs. 1.047 g/cm2) and females (0.967 vs. 0.938 g/cm2; both p < 0.05), but a similar pattern was not found in the femoral neck. Meanwhile, lumbar BMD was positively associated with SBP and negatively associated with DBP both in males and females. The prevalence of low bone mass and osteoporosis at the lumbar vertebrae was lower in male patients with hypertension than in the control group. However, no difference was observed among postmenopausal females between the hypertension and control groups. Conclusions: Hypertension was associated with higher BMD at the lumbar vertebrae in both males older than 50 years and postmenopausal females.

AIMS: The association between serum albumin and depressive symptoms has been unclear in previous epidemiological studies. We explored whether serum albumin is associated with depressive symptoms based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 13,681 participants aged ≥ 20 years from the NHANES performed during 2005-2018, which produced nationally representative database. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Serum albumin concentration was measured using the bromocresol purple dye method, and participants were divided into quartiles of serum albumin concentrations. Weighted data were calculated according to analytical guidelines. Logistics regression and linear regression models were used to assess and quantify the association between serum albumin and depressive symptoms. Univariate and stratified analyses were also performed. RESULTS: There were 1551 (10.23%) adults (aged ≥ 20 years) with depressive symptoms among the 13,681. A negative association was found between serum albumin concentration and depressive symptoms. Compared with the lowest albumin quartile, the multivariate-adjusted effect size (95% confidence interval) for depressive symptoms of the fully adjusted model in the highest albumin quartile was 0.77 (0.60 to 0.99) and - 0.38 (- 0.66 to - 0.09) using logistics regression and linear regression models respectively. Current smoking status modified the association between serum albumin concentration and PHQ-9 scores (p for interaction = 0.033). CONCLUSION: This cross-sectional study revealed that albumin concentration is significantly more likely to be a protective factor for depressive symptoms, with the association being more pronounced in non-smokers.

Perfluorocubane is a fluorinated analogue of a polyhedral hydrocarbon observed recently in experiment (M. Sugiyama, M. Akiyama, Y. Yonezawa, K. Komaguchi, M. Higashi, K. Nozaki and T. Okazoe, Electron in a cube: Synthesis and characterization of perfluorocubane as an electron acceptor, Science, 2022, 377, 756-759). Inspired by its unique structure and electronic properties, we systematically explored its chemical stabilities, bonding character, electronic properties, and electronic transitions using density functional theory calculations. Analysis of the binding energies and Mayer bond orders reveals that the C8F8 molecule has high chemical stability with a special electronic structure, and the addition of an extra electron to the neutral molecule may generate a radical anion with a hosted electron inside the cubane frame. The induced ring currents under an external magnetic field reveal that perfluorocubane exhibits an overall small diamagnetic current supported by anisotropy of the current-induced density (ACID) and gauge-including magnetically induced currents (GIMIC). AdNDP analysis indicates that the localized two-center two-electron (2c-2e) σ-bonds are responsible for structural stabilization of the molecule. Further study into the electronic excitations shows that the main electronic transitions of perfluorocubane come from the surface of the cubic frame to its inner structure. Consequently, perfluorocubane can be recognized as a small electron acceptor material due to its special electron-carrying capacity, which will promote further applications of novel conducting and semiconducting materials.

Facing the increasing demand for batteries worldwide, recycling waste lithium batteries has become one of the important ways to address the problem. However, this process generates a large amount of wastewater which contains high concentration of heavy metals and acids. Deploying lithium battery recycling would cause severe environmental hazards, would pose risks to human health, and would also be a waste of resources. In this paper, a combined process of diffusion dialysis (DD) and electrodialysis (ED) is proposed to separate, recover, and utilize Ni2+ and H2SO4 in the wastewater. In the DD process, the acid recovery rate and Ni2+ rejection rate could reach 75.96% and 97.31%, respectively, with a flow rate of 300 L/h and a W/A flow rate ratio of 1:1. In the ED process, the recovered acid from DD is concentrated from 43.1 g/L to 150.2 g/L H2SO4 by the two-stage ED, which could be used in the front-end procedure of battery recycling process. In conclusion, a promising method for the treatment of battery wastewater which achieved the recycling and utilization of Ni2+ and H2SO4 was proposed and proved to have industrial application prospects.

Background: Recently, identifying the psychological mechanism of college students' loneliness has attracted wide attention because the maladjustment caused by college students' loneliness is increasingly common. This study explored the relationship and potential mechanism between college students' neuroticism and loneliness in a large sample. Methods: A total of 4,600 college students completed the Big Five Personality Scale, Loneliness Scale, Self-efficacy Scale and Social Avoidance and Distress Scale. Results: By examining the chain mediating roles of self-efficacy, social avoidance and distress (SAD) in the relation between neuroticism and loneliness, the present study found that college students' neuroticism was positively associated with loneliness via self-efficacy and SAD, respectively, and sequentially. Conclusions: The results suggest a significant positive association between neuroticism and loneliness, which is influenced by the mediating effects of both self-efficacy and social avoidance and distress (SAD), as well as the chained mediating effects of self-efficacy and SAD.

Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of single parameters, unimodality, and bimodality in distinguishing glioblastoma (GBM) from atypical primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) based on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) enhancement, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) findings. Methods: The cohort included 108 patients pathologically diagnosed with GBM and 54 patients pathologically diagnosed with PCNSL. Pretreatment morphological MRI, DWI, DSC, DTI and MRS were all performed on each patient. The quantitative parameters of multimodal MRI were measured and compared between the patients in the GBM and atypical PCNSL groups, and those parameters showing a significant difference (p < 0.05) between patients in the GBM and atypical PCNSL groups were used to develop one-parameters, unimodality, and bimodality models. We evaluated the efficiency of different models in distinguishing GBM from atypical PCNSL by performing receiver operating characteristic analysis (ROC). Results: Atypical PCNSL had lower minimum apparent diffusion coefficient (ADCmin), mean ADC (ADCmean), relative ADC (rADC), mean relative cerebral blood volume (rCBVmean), maximum rCBV (rCBVmax), fractional anisotropy (FA), axial diffusion coefficient (DA) and radial diffusion coefficient (DR) values and higher choline/creatine (Cho/Cr) and lipid/creatine (Lip/Cr) ratios than GBM (all p < 0.05). The rCBVmax, DTI and DSC + DTI data were optimal models of single-parameter, unimodality and bimodality for differentiation of GBM from atypical PCNSL, yielding areas under the curves (AUCs) of 0.905, 0.954, and 0.992, respectively. Conclusions: Models of single-parameter, unimodality and bimodality based on muti multiparameter functional MRI may help to discriminate GBM from atypical PCNSL.

Objective: To determine the correlations between dietary and blood inflammation indices in elderly Americans and their effects on cognitive function. Methods: This research extracted data from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2,479 patients who were ≥60 years old. Cognitive function was assessed as a composite cognitive function score (Z-score) calculated from the results of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Word Learning and Delayed Recall tests, the Animal Fluency test, and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test. We used a dietary inflammatory index (DII) calculated from 28 food components to represent the dietary inflammation profile. Blood inflammation indicators included the white blood cell count (WBC), neutrophil count (NE), lymphocyte count (Lym), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-albumin ratio (NAR), systemic immune-inflammation index [SII, calculated as (peripheral platelet count) × NE/Lym], and systemic inflammatory response index [SIRI, calculated as (monocyte count) × NE/Lym]. WBC, NE, Lym, NLR, PLR, NAR, SII, SIRI, and DII were initially treated as continuous variables. For logistic regression, WBC, NE, Lym, NLR, PLR, NAR, SII, and SIRI were divided into quartile groups, and DII was divided into tertile groups. Results: After adjusting for covariates, WBC, NE, NLR, NAR, SII, SIRI, and DII scores were markedly higher in the cognitively impaired group than in the normal group (p < 0.05). DII was negatively correlated with the Z-score when combined with WBC, NE, and NAR (p < 0.05). After adjusting for all covariates, DII was positively correlated with SII in people with cognitive impairment (p < 0.05). Higher DII with NLR, NAR, SII, and SIRI all increased the risk of cognitive impairment (p < 0.05). Conclusion: DII was positively correlated with blood inflammation indicators, and higher DII and blood inflammation indicators increased the risk of developing cognitive impairment.

This study aimed to summarize the evidence regarding the effects of dietary intake before conception on pregnancy outcomes by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies. Electronic databases were searched from inception up to August 2021. Overall, 65 studies involving 831 798 participants were included and 38 studies were quantitatively pooled. With regard to maternal outcomes, pre-pregnancy intake of fried food, fast food, red and processed meat, heme iron and a low-carbohydrate dietary pattern was positively associated with the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) (all P < 0.05). However, a high dietary fiber intake and folic acid supplementation were negatively associated with GDM risk (both P < 0.05). With regard to neonatal outcomes, maternal caffeine intake before pregnancy significantly increased the risk of spontaneous abortion, while folic acid supplementation had protective effects on total adverse neonatal outcomes, preterm birth, and small-for-gestational age (SGA, all P < 0.05). However, no significant associations were found between adverse pregnancy outcomes (i.e., GDM and SGA) and the pre-pregnancy dietary intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, potato, fish, and carbohydrates and the Healthy Eating Index. Our study suggests that maintaining a healthy diet before conception has significant beneficial effects on pregnancy outcomes.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/10408398.2021.1989658.

The present study investigated the association between the presence of periodontitis and aortic calcification (AC) risk among Chinese adults. A total of 6059 individuals who underwent regular health check-ups and received a diagnosis of periodontitis between 2009 and 2016 were included. The outcome was AC, assessed by a chest low-dose spiral CT scan. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to assess the association between periodontitis and AC risk after adjusting for several confounders. After a median follow-up period of 2.3 years (interquartile range: 1.03-4.97 years), 843 cases of AC were identified, with 532 (12.13%) and 311 (18.59%) patients in the non-periodontitis group and periodontitis group, respectively. Multivariate analyses demonstrated that, compared with those without periodontitis, the hazard ratio and 95% confidence interval for AC risk in participants with periodontitis was 1.18 (1.02-1.36) (P = .025) in the fully adjusted model. Stratified analyses showed that the positive relationship between periodontitis and AC was more evident in males and participants <65 years of age (pinteraction = .005 and .004, respectively). Our results show that the presence of periodontitis was positively associated with AC among Chinese adults, especially among males and younger participants.
