RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the application of small-sized magnetically controlled capsule gastroscopy (MCCG) in upper gastrointestinal diseases screening in asymptomatic individuals. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 2163 asymptomatic individuals who underwent small-sized MCCG at our center from September 2022 to December 2023. The detection of submucosal tumors, polyps and ulcers in the upper gastrointestinal tract, the tolerance and safety of the subjects were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: Suspected submucosal tumors in the upper gastrointestinal tract were detected in 34 (1.57%) of 2136 subjects, with a higher incidence in females and no observed age difference. Polyps were detected in 328 subjects (15.16%), with a higher incidence in females and an increased detection rate with increasing age. Ulcers were detected in 27 subjects (1.25%), with a higher incidence in males and no observed age difference. There was no significant discomfort in all subjects, and no adverse event or capsule retention occurred. CONCLUSION: Small-sized MCCG can be used for focal lesion screening in the upper gastrointestinal tract and is comfortable and safe, making it a safe and efficient method for examining upper gastrointestinal diseases in the physical examination population.

RESUMEN

This study was conducted to develop antimicrobial coatings to decontaminate and prevent cross-contamination of shell eggs. Egg shells were inoculated with nalidixic acid-resistant Salmonella enterica Enteritidis strains OB030832, OB040159, and C405 and treated with antimicrobial coatings. Polylactic acid served as a nonedible polymer, and chitosan served as an edible polymer carrier of natural antimicrobials, including nisin, allyl isothiocyanate (AIT), lauric arginate ester (LAE), and organic acids. Increases of AIT concentrations or addition of nisin to AIT in either the polylactic acid or chitosan coating solutions resulted in greater reductions of Salmonella. Chitosan coatings with 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0% LAE reduced Salmonella by 1.7, 2.5, and 5.2 log CFU/cm(2), respectively. Shell eggs treated with 1.0 and 0.5% LAE in chitosan coatings had nondetectable Salmonella cells (< 0.5 log CFU/cm(2)) after 3 and 7 days of storage at 7°C, respectively, and no outgrowth was observed up to 28 days. Coating treatments significantly reduced weight loss of shell eggs during 12 weeks of storage at 7 or 4°C. This study demonstrates an alternative and effective intervention technology for decontaminating shell eggs and provides an alternative approach to reduce possible recalls and outbreaks associated with pathogen contamination on shell eggs and in egg products.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in small mammals from the forest area of Hengduan Mountains in southwestern China. METHODS: Small mammals captured from Gaoligong and Xianggelila mountainous area of Yunnan province were detected by PCR amplification. The sequences of 16S rRNA and Msp4 gene fragments from positive samples were compared with corresponding sequences deposited in GenBank. RESULTS: A total number of 436 small animals, which belongs to 5 orders 18 genera 35 species were tested, 32 (7.34%) were positive in 6 genera 11 species. There were 8.64% (26/301) positive in 25 species at Goligong mountainous areas, and 4.44% (6/135) were positive in 19 species at the Xianggelila mountainous areas. Positive small mammals were most rodents. The nucleotide sequences of A.phagocytophilum 16S rRNA gene amplified from small mammals varied from 99% - 100% and were 99% - 100% similar with the corresponding segments of A. phagocytophilum from Jilin deposited in GeneBank. The sequences of A. phagocytophilum Msp4 gene showed that there was 95% - 97% similarity with the corresponding sequences registered in GenBank. CONCLUSION: A. phagocytophilum was firstly identified in 6 genera 11 species small mammals from a forest area of Hengduan Mountainous areas in southwestern China. Rodents might serve as the primary hosts indicating the potential risk to the domestic animals and human beings in this area.

Immunoglobulin-rich foods may provide health benefits to consumers. To extend the refrigerated shelf life of functional foods enriched with bovine immunoglobulin G (IgG), nonthermal alternatives such as high-pressure processing (HPP) may offer advantages to thermal processing for microbial reduction. To evaluate the effects of HPP on the immunoactivity of bovine IgG, a soymilk product enriched with milk protein concentrates, derived from dairy cows that were hyperimmunized with 26 human pathogens, was subjected to HPP or heat treatment. To achieve a 5 log reduction in inoculated Escherichia coli 8739, the HPP or heat treatment requirements were 345 MPa for 4 min at 30 degrees C or for 20 s at 70 degrees C, respectively. To achieve a 5 log reduction in natural flora in the enriched soymilk, the HPP or heat treatments needed were 552 MPa for 4 min at 30 degrees C or for 120 s at 78.2 degrees C, respectively. At equivalent levels for a 5 log reduction in E. coli, HPP and heat treatment caused 25% and no detectable loss in bovine IgG activity, respectively. However, at equivalent levels for a 5 log reduction in natural flora, HPP and heat resulted in 65 and 85% loss of bovine IgG activity, respectively. Results of combined pressure-thermal kinetic studies of bovine milk IgG activity were provided to determine the optimal process conditions to preserve product function.

Bovine immunoglobulin G (IgG) solutions were subjected to pulsed electric fields (PEF) or heat treatment to investigate the effect of processing on secondary structure monitored using circular dichroism spectrometry. Under heat treatment, the critical temperature for bovine IgG to change secondary structure at neutral pH in borate buffer is 72 degrees C. A conversion of the secondary structure from beta-sheets into random coils along with the loss of immunoactivity of bovine IgG was observed when heated at 82 degrees C for 120 s. In contrast, PEF treatment at 41.1 kV/cm for 54 mus with bipolar pulses (outlet at 43.8 degrees C) caused no detectable changes in the secondary structure or the thermal stability of secondary structure. A shape factor, S (200nm) over (217nm), ratio of magnitude of the positive CD band at 200 nm to that of the negative CD band at 217 nm, was closely correlated to the immunoactivity of bovine IgG (r(2) = 0.99) and quantifies changes of secondary structure.

A continuous pulsed electric field (PEF) system integrated with six co-field flow PEF treatment chambers was used to study the inactivation of pepsin. The inactivation of pepsin activity was a function of applied electric field strength, electrical conductivity, and pH. The inactivation of pepsin by PEF followed a first-order model. The first-order inactivation kinetic constant of pepsin was 0.012 (1/mus) in 7.5 mM HCl (pH 2.0) at 34.2 kV/cm. Aggregation of pepsin was observed during PEF treatment; however, the inactivation took place before the formation of aggregates. Circular dichroism analysis showed that inactivation of pepsin by PEF was correlated to the loss of beta-sheet structure in a pepsin molecule. The relative residual activity of PEF-treated pepsin was correlated to the relative molar ellipticity at 215 nm. Both PEF- and heat-induced inactivation of pepsin were correlated with the alteration of the secondary structure (beta-sheet dominant structure) of pepsin.
