RESUMEN

Solanum pimpinellifolium, the closest wild relative of the domesticated tomato, has high potential for use in breeding programs aimed at developing multi-pathogen resistance and quality improvement. We generated a chromosome-level genome assembly of S. pimpinellifolium LA1589, with a size of 833 Mb and a contig N50 of 31 Mb. We anchored 98.80% of the contigs into 12 pseudo-chromosomes, and identified 74.47% of the sequences as repetitive sequences. The genome evaluation revealed BUSCO and LAI score of 98.3% and 14.49, respectively, indicating high quality of this assembly. A total of 41,449 protein-coding genes were predicted in the genome, of which 89.17% were functionally annotated. This high-quality genome assembly serves as a valuable resource for accelerating the biological discovery and molecular breeding of this important horticultural crop.

RESUMEN

Background: The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), amygdala (Amyg), and nucleus accumbens (NAc) have been identified as critical players in the social preference of individuals with ASD. However, the specific pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this role requires further clarification. In the current study, we applied Granger Causality Analysis (GCA) to investigate the neural connectivity of these three brain regions of interest (ROIs) in patients with ASD, aiming to elucidate their associations with clinical features of the disorder. Methods: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data were acquired from the ABIDE II database, which included 37 patients with ASD and 50 typically developing (TD) controls. The mPFC, Amyg, and NAc were defined as ROIs, and the differences in fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) within the ROIs between the ASD and TD groups were computed. Subsequently, we employed GCA to investigate the bidirectional effective connectivity between the ROIs and the rest of the brain. Finally, we explored whether this effective connectivity was associated with the social responsiveness scale (SRS) scores of children with ASD. Results: The fALFF values in the ROIs were reduced in children with ASD when compared to the TD group. In terms of the efferent connectivity from the ROIs to the whole brain, the ASD group exhibited increased connectivity in the right cingulate gyrus and decreased connectivity in the right superior temporal gyrus. Regarding the afferent connectivity from the whole brain to the ROIs, the ASD group displayed increased connectivity in the right globus pallidus and decreased connectivity in the right cerebellar Crus 1 area and left cingulate gyrus. Additionally, we demonstrated a positive correlation between effective connectivity derived from GCA and SRS scores. Conclusion: Impairments in social preference ASD children is linked to impaired effective connectivity in brain regions associated with social cognition, emotional responses, social rewards, and social decision-making. This finding further reveals the potential neuropathological mechanisms underlying ASD.

RESUMEN

Stretching elastic materials containing nanoparticle lattices is common in research and industrial settings, yet our knowledge of the deformation process remains limited. Understanding how such lattices reconfigure is critically important, as changes in microstructure lead to significant alterations in their performance. This understanding has been extremely difficult to achieve due to a lack of fundamental rules governing the rearrangements. Our study elucidates the physical processes and underlying mechanisms of three-dimensional lattice transformations in a polymeric photonic crystal from 0% to over 200% strain during uniaxial stretching. Corroborated by comprehensive experimental characterizations, we present analytical models that precisely predict both the three-dimensional lattice structures and the macroscale deformations throughout the stretching process. These models reveal how the nanoparticle lattice and matrix polymer jointly determine the resultant structures, which breaks the original structural symmetry and profoundly changes the dispersion of photonic bandgaps. Stretching induces shifting of the main pseudogap structure out from the 1st Brillouin zone and the merging of different symmetry points. Evolutions of multiple photonic bandgaps reveal potential optical singularities shifting with strain. This work sets a new benchmark for the reconfiguration of soft material structures and may lay the groundwork for the study of stretchable three-dimensional topological photonic crystals.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are reported for up to 80% of autistic individuals. We examined whether parsimonious sets of items derived from the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised (M-CHAT-R) and the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ) are superior to the standard M-CHAT-R in predicting subsequent autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnoses. METHODS: Participants from 11 Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) cohorts were included. We performed logistic LASSO regression models with 10-fold cross-validation to identify whether a combination of items derived from the M-CHAT-R and BISQ are superior to the standard M-CHAT-R in predicting ASD diagnoses. RESULTS: The final sample comprised 1552 children. The standard M-CHAT-R had a sensitivity of 44% (95% CI: 34, 55), specificity of 92% (95% CI: 91, 94), and AUROC of 0.726 (95% CI: 0.663, 0.790). A higher proportion of children with ASD had difficulty falling asleep or resisted bedtime during infancy/toddlerhood. However, LASSO models revealed parental reports of sleep problems did not improve the accuracy of the M-CHAT-R in predicting ASD diagnosis. CONCLUSION: While children with ASD had higher rates of sleep problems during infancy/toddlerhood, there was no improvement in ASD developmental screening through the incorporation of parent-report sleep metrics. IMPACT: Parental-reported sleep problems are common in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We investigated whether the inclusion of parental-reports of infant/toddler sleep patterns enhanced the effectiveness of developmental screening for autism. We reported higher rates of difficulty falling asleep and resisting bedtime during infancy and toddlerhood among children later diagnosed with ASD; however, we did not find an improvement in ASD developmental screening through the incorporation of parent-report sleep metrics. In our sample, the standard M-CHAT-R had a sensitivity of 39% among children of mothers with government insurance compared with a sensitivity of 53% among children of mothers with employer-based insurance.

RESUMEN

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of 0.01% atropine combined with orthokeratology (OK) lens on axial elongation in schoolchildren with myopia. Methods: Sixty children aged 8-12 years with spherical equivalent refraction (SER) from -1.00D to -4.00D in both eyes were enrolled in this randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled, cross-over trial. Children who had been wearing OK lenses for 2 months were randomly assigned into combination group (combination of OK lens and 0.01% atropine) for 1 year followed by control group (combination of OK lens and placebo) for another 1 year or vice versa. This trial was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (Number: ChiCTR2000033904, 16/06/2020). The primary outcome was changes in axial length (AL). Data of right eyes were analyzed. Results: There were statistically significant differences in the changes in AL between combination and control groups after generalized estimating equation model adjusting for age and baseline SER (p = 0.001). The mean axial elongation difference between combination and control groups was 0.10 mm in the first year (0.10 ± 0.13 mm vs. 0.20 ±0.15 mm; p = 0.01), and 0.09 mm in the second year (0.22 ± 0.10 mm vs. 0.13 ± 0.14 mm; p = 0.01), respectively. The mean axial elongation difference of two groups in the first year was similar to that in the second year during the cross-over treatment. Conclusion: In central Mainland China in myopic children, the treatment of combination therapy is more effective than single OK lens in controlling axial elongation.

RESUMEN

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) is the core defect of developmental dyslexia (DD), requiring collaboration among brain areas to complete. However, it's still unclear which effective connectivity (EC) among brain areas are crucial for RAN deficits in Chinses children with DD. The current study aims to explore the EC among brain areas related to RAN deficits in Chinese children with DD. We recruited 36 Chinese children with DD and 64 typically developing (TD) children aged 8-12 to complete resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scan. Granger causality analysis (GCA) was employed to analysis the EC among brain areas related to RAN, and to calculate the relationship between EC and RAN scores. Compared to TD group, the DD group exhibited significantly decreased EC from left precentral gyrus (PG) to right precuneus, left anterior cingulate and paracingulate gyrus (ACG), left calcarine and right angular, from left middle frontal gyrus (MFG) to left calcarine. Additionally, the DD group showed increased EC from right cuneus to left inferior frontal gyrus triangular part (IFGtri). The EC from left PG to left ACG was positively correlated with letters-RAN score. The results showed Chinese children with DD had both defect and compensatory mechanisms for their RAN deficits. The decreased EC output from left PG may be the core problem of the RAN deficits, which may influence the integration of visual-spatial information, attention, memory retrieval, and speech motor in speech production. The current study has important clinic implications for establishing intervention measures targeted brain.

RESUMEN

Background: Motor coordination difficulties could contribute to social communication deficits in autistic children. However, the exploration of the mechanism implicated in these claims has been limited by the lack of potential confounders such as executive function (EF). Methods: We investigated the role that EF plays in the relationship between motor coordination and social communication in a school-aged autistic population via a structural model in a statistically robust manner. The results of questionnaires, including the Developmental Coordination Disorder questionnaire, the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, and the Social Responsiveness Scale, were collected to measure motor coordination, social communication deficits, and EF. Results: A total of 182 autistic children (7.61±1.31 years, 87.9% boys) were included in the final analysis. In the model with EF as a mediator, the total effect (ß=-0.599, P<0.001) and the direct effect (ß=-0.331, P =0.003) of motor coordination function on social communication were both significant among autistic children without intellectual disability (ID), as were indirect effects through EF (ß=-0.268, P<0.001). Conclusion: EF partially mediates the motor coordination and social communication correlation among autistic children. We suggest that motor coordination should be included in the routine evaluation of autistic surveillance and rehabilitation procedures.

RESUMEN

Enteral nutrition (EN) is one method of nutrition support for children and adolescents receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy, and there are no guidelines for its use in this population. We conducted a systematic review to determine whether EN is effective and safe in children supported by ECMO. We searched the Cochrane Library database, MEDLINE, and Embase on Ovid in March 2023 to identify studies that evaluated children and adolescents who received ECMO and were treated with EN. Random effects meta-analysis was used to estimate the odds of mortality with EN compared with parenteral nutrition (PN). A total of 14 studies were included in this review with 1650 patients (796 received EN). The median duration of ECMO was 5-10 days, and the median EN initiation time ranged from 23 h to 7 days. The pooled results suggest no significant difference in mortality with EN compared with PN (odds ratio [OR] = 0.77; 95% CI, 0.56-1.05; I2 = 26%). Exclusion of the only study that reported an increase in mortality resulted in a borderline significant reduction in mortality with EN (OR = 0.71; 95% CI, 0.51-1.00; I2 = 26%). The predictors of EN were male sex, older age, heavier weight, greater height, cardiac diagnosis, longer duration of ECMO, and use of venovenous ECMO. Most studies suggest no correlation between EN and complications. EN use in children and adolescents who receive ECMO does not appear to be associated with increased mortality compared with PN and was safe in terms of intestinal complications and feeding intolerance.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Erectile dysfunction (ED) has been established as a comorbidity among men living with HIV, but comparisons by HIV serostatus of ED incidence in a longitudinal follow-up cohort of men are lacking. We sought to evaluate the incidence of ED spanning a period of 12 years in a longitudinal cohort of sexual minority men (SMM) living with and without HIV. Methods: We analyzed ED incidence data for 625 participants in the longitudinal Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study from visits spanning October 2006 to April 2019. Results: SMM living with HIV were more likely to have incident ED compared with those living without HIV (rate ratio: 1.41; 95% CI: 1.14-1.75). Older age, current diabetes, cumulative cigarette use, and cumulative antidepressant use were associated with increased incidence of ED in the entire sample. Self-identifying as Hispanic, current diabetes, and cumulative antidepressant use were positively associated with ED incidence among SMM living with HIV. Cumulative cigarette use was positively associated with greater ED incidence only among SMM living without HIV. Discussion: In summary, age (full sample/ with HIV), current diabetes (full sample/with HIV), cumulative cigarette use (full sample/without HIV), and cumulative antidepressant use (full sample/with HIV) were associated with increased ED incidence. Skillful management of diabetes and careful titration of antidepressants, along with smoking cessation practices, are recommended to mitigate ED in this population.

RESUMEN

Globally, lakes are drying up and shrinking and inland lakes, in particular, face severe water shortage problems. Thus, the degradation mechanisms and protection measures for inland lakes urgently need to be explored. Hongjiannao Lake (HL), an inland lake on the border of Shaanxi Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China, was selected for the present case study. The evolution of HL was analyzed and the current lake water storage was measured on site. The driving factors of water resource changes in HL were discussed based on meteorological and landcover data. The results showed that (1) from 1929 to 2021, the lake area of HL experienced four stages: formation, stability, shrinkage and recovery. The smallest water area was 31.08 km2 in 2015, half the size of lake in the 1960s. (2) Spatially, the morphological changes of HL mainly occurred where the rivers entered the lake. (3) In 2021, the average depth of HL was 3.77 m, and the water storage capacity was 140.56 million m3. (4) The annual average evaporation was 3.36 times the amount of the annual average precipitation in Hongjiannao Basin (HB), but climate change was not the main driver of changes in the HL area. (5) In the past 20 years, cultivated land and artificial surface increased by 3.11% and 1.04%, respectively, whereas grassland and water body decreased by 3.51% and 0.45%, respectively. The expansion of cultivated land and artificial surface, as well as the construction of reservoirs upstream of the lake, hindered the replenishment of water resources to HL. This study recommends a range of strategies for water resource protection in inland lakes, including implementing ecological restoration projects, carrying out inter-basin water transfer measures, improving the efficiency of regional water resource use, and improving industrial structure and distribution.

RESUMEN

Image stitching aims to synthesize a wider and more informative whole image, which has been widely used in various fields. This study focuses on improving the accuracy of image mosaic and proposes an image mosaic method based on local edge contour matching constraints. Because the accuracy and quantity of feature matching have a direct influence on the stitching result, it often leads to wrong image warpage model estimation when feature points are difficult to detect and match errors are easy to occur. To address this issue, the geometric invariance is used to expand the number of feature matching points, thus enriching the matching information. Based on Canny edge detection, significant local edge contour features are constructed through operations such as structure separation and edge contour merging to improve the image registration effect. The method also introduces the spatial variation warping method to ensure the local alignment of the overlapping area, maintains the line structure in the image without bending by the constraints of short and long lines, and eliminates the distortion of the non-overlapping area by the global line-guided warping method. The method proposed in this paper is compared with other research through experimental comparisons on multiple datasets, and excellent stitching results are obtained.

RESUMEN

Block copolymer (BCP) grain structure affects the mechanical, optical, and electrical properties of BCP materials, making the accurate characterization of this grain structure an important goal. In this study, improved BCP grain parameters were obtained by employing an exponentially decaying correlation function within the ellipsoidal grain model, instead of the Gaussian correlation function that was used in previous work. The exponential correlation function provides a better fit to the experimental depolarized light scattering data, which outweighs the disadvantage that it requires numerical integration to obtain the model scattered intensity.

RESUMEN

There is limited evidence on the associations of unintended pregnancy with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This study aimed to examine this relationship and the modification of pre-conceptional and prenatal folic acid supplements. Six thousand and five toddlers aged 16 to 30 months from seven cities of six provinces in China were eligible for participation. Information on unintended pregnancy and folic acid supplements was obtained via questionnaires from caregivers of toddlers. The diagnosis of ASD was based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) and the Chinese version of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). Of the 6005 toddlers in the study (3337 boys and 2668 girls), 71 (1.18%) received the diagnosis of ASD. Generalized linear models with a logit link function showed unintended pregnancy was positively associated with ASD (odds ratios [OR] = 1.69, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-2.79). Stratified estimates indicated that the association remained stable among toddlers of mothers without pre-conceptional and prenatal folic acid supplements (OR = 2.75, 95% CI, 1.04-7.27; n = 1243, 20.70%). Unintended pregnancy was associated with higher odds of ASD in 16-30 months of toddlers, and the association was consistent among toddlers of mothers without prenatal folic acid supplements. Our findings emphasize the need to raise awareness of the risk of unintended pregnancy and the benefits of folic acid supplements among Chinese women.

RESUMEN

The ability of fair investments in local general higher education to drive sustainable regional economic growth is explored. Based on spatial theory, the exploratory spatial data analysis method is used to examine the spatial characteristics of local general higher education expenditures in China's 30 provinces from 2000 to 2021. The spatial Durbin model is employed to analyze the impact of education expenditures on regional economic growth. The results reveal that education expenditures had positive spatial autocorrelation. Education expenditures promoted regional economic growth, and the long-term effect was greater than the short-term effect. These expenditures also had a positive spillover effect, showing that strategic spatial interactions between provinces positively influence growth. The positive spillover effects nationwide and in the eastern region were significantly greater than the direct effect, whereas the spillover effects in both the middle and western regions were negative.

RESUMEN

Electrocatalytic nitrite (NO2-) reduction offers the potential to synthesize high-value ammonia (NH3) while simultaneously removing NO2- pollution from aqueous solutions, but it requires high-efficiency catalysts to drive the complex six-electron reaction. Herein, cobalt-nanoparticle-decorated 3D porous nitrogen-doped carbon network (Co@NC) is proven as a high-efficiency catalyst for the selective electroreduction of NO2- to NH3. Such Co@NC attains a large NH3 yield of 922.7 µmol h-1 cm-2 and a high Faradaic efficiency of 95.4% under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, it shows remarkable electrochemical stability during cyclic electrolysis.

RESUMEN

Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based solid-state electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries have garnered significant interest due to their enhanced potential window, high energy density, and improved safety features. However, the issues such as low ionic conductivity at ambient temperature, substantial ionic conductivity fluctuations with temperature changes, and inadequate electrolyte interfacial compatibility hinder their widespread applications. Electrospinning is a popular approach for fabricating solid-state electrolytes owing to its superior advantages of adjustable component constitution and the unique internal fiber structure of the resultant electrolytes. Thus, this technique has been extensively adopted in related studies. This review provides an overview of recent advancements in optimizing the performance of PEO solid-state electrolytes via electrospinning technology. Initially, the impacts of different lithium salts and their concentrations on the performance of electrospun PEO-based solid-state electrolytes were compared. Subsequently, research pertaining to the effects of various additives on these electrolytes was reviewed. Furthermore, investigations concerning the enhancement of electrospun solid-state electrolytes via modifications of PEO molecular chains are herein detailed, and lastly, the prevalent challenges and future directions of PEO-based solid-state electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries are summarized.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between infant feeding practices and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among children aged 2-5 years in the United States (US). METHODS: Data from the 2016-2020 National Survey of Children's Health, a nationally representative cross-sectional survey, were utilized for this study. Questionnaires were administered to parents of children aged 2-5 years to gather information on ASD diagnosis, infant feeding practices, and demographic factors (e.g., child sex, ethnic group, and maternal age at birth). Logistic regression with sample weights was employed to assess the association between infant feeding practices and ASD, while controlling for demographic variables. Polynomial regression models were used to examine trends in exclusive breastfeeding and ever breastfeeding rates among children with and without ASD. RESULTS: A total of 35,050 children aged 2-5 years were analyzed, including 616 diagnosed with ASD, after excluding participants with missing information on breastfeeding and ASD diagnosis. Of these children with ASD, 76.6% (n = 472) had a breastfeeding history, with 67.5% (n = 416) engaged in partial breastfeeding and 9.1% (n = 56) exclusively breastfed. Adjusted odds ratios for each additional month of breastfeeding compared to never being breastfed were 0.98 (95% CI, 0.96-1.01). The adjusted odds ratios for breastfeeding durations of > 0-6 months, > 6-12 months, > 12-24 months, and > 24 months were 0.81 (95% CI, 0.50-1.31), 0.65 (95% CI, 0.36-1.18), 0.81 (95% CI, 0.44-1.49), and 0.48 (95% CI, 0.23-1.01), respectively. Compared to children who were never breastfed, the adjusted odds ratio for children who were ever breastfed was 0.74 (95% CI, 0.47-1.18). Among children with ASD, the proportion of ever breastfeeding declined from 82.0% in 2017 to 64.3% in 2020, while exclusive breastfeeding decreased from 12.0% in 2016 to 4.2% in 2020. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Although no significant association was found between infant feeding practices and ASD among US children aged 2-5 years, the rates of breastfeeding, particularly exclusive breastfeeding, were suboptimal among children with ASD. This highlights the need for specific policies and practices to promote and support breastfeeding among parents of children with ASD or those at high risk of having a child with ASD.

RESUMEN

Electrochemical reduction of nitrite (NO2-) can satisfy the necessity for NO2- contaminant removal and deliver a sustainable pathway for ammonia (NH3) generation. Its practical application yet requires highly efficient electrocatalysts to boost NH3 yield and Faradaic efficiency (FE). In this study, CoP nanoparticle-decorated TiO2 nanoribbon array on Ti plate (CoP@TiO2/TP) is verified as a high-efficiency electrocatalyst for the selective reduction of NO2- to NH3. When measured in 0.1 M NaOH with NO2-, the freestanding CoP@TiO2/TP electrode delivers a large NH3 yield of 849.57 µmol h-1 cm-2 and a high FE of 97.01% with good stability. Remarkably, the subsequently fabricated Zn-NO2- battery achieves a high power density of 1.24 mW cm-2 while delivering a NH3 yield of 714.40 µg h-1 cm-2.

RESUMEN

Background: Moderate therapeutic hypothermia is protective against several cellular stressors. However, the mechanisms behind this protection are not entirely known. In the current investigation, we investigated that therapeutic hypothermia at 33°C administered following peroxide-induced oxidative stress might protect human oligodendroglioma cells using an in vitro model. Methods and Results: Tert-butyl peroxide treatment for one hour significantly increased cell apoptosis and suppressed cell viability. In the range of 50-1000 M tert-butyl peroxide, this cell death was dose-dependent. MTT assay and cell apoptosis assay were applied to analyze cell viability/death at 24 hours after peroxide-induced stress. Therapeutic hypothermia at 33°C delivered for two hours after peroxide exposure significantly increased cell viability and suppressed cell death. Even 15 minutes after peroxide washout when delayed hypothermia was used, this protection was still apparent. Three FDA-approved antioxidants (Tempol, EUK134, and Edaravone at 100 M) were added immediately after tert-butyl peroxide, followed by hypothermia treatment. These three antioxidants greatly increased cell viability and cell apoptosis. RT-qPCR was applied to determine the effects of hypothermia treatment on the expression of caspase-3 and -8 as well as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Therapeutic hypothermia significantly downregulated these three factors. Conclusion: Overall, these findings confirmed that hypothermia and antioxidants quenching reactive oxygen species may lower mitochondrial oxidative stress and/or apoptotic pathways. Further investigation are needed to investigate the role of hypothermia in other cell models.
