RESUMEN

The spatial shifts and vulnerability assessments of ecological niches for trees will offer fresh perspectives for sustainable development and preservation of forests, particularly within the framework of rapid climate change. Betula luminifera is a fast-growing native timber plantation species in China, but the natural resources have been severely damaged. Here, a comprehensive habitat suitability model (including ten niche-based GIS modeling algorithms) was developed that integrates three types of environmental factors, namely, climatic, soil, and ultraviolet variables, to assess the species contemporary and future distribution of suitable habitats across China. Our results suggest that the habitats of B. luminifera generally occur in subtropical areas (about 1.52 × 106 km2). However, the growth of B. luminifera is profoundly shaped by the nuances of its local environment, the most reasonable niche spaces are only 1.15 × 106 km2 when limiting ecological factors (soil and ultraviolet) are considered, generally considered as the core production region. Furthermore, it is anticipated that species-suitable habitats will decrease by 10 and 8% with climate change in the 2050s and 2070s, respectively. Our study provided a clear understanding of species-suitable habitat distribution and identified the reasons why other niche spaces are unsuitable in the future, which can warn against artificial cultivation and conservation planning.

This study examined treatment outcomes, including preserved fertility, menstrual regularity, and pregnancy outcomes, in patients with stage I epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) or borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) who underwent fertility-sparing surgery (FSS). Patients with stage I EOC and BOTs who were aged 18-45 years and underwent FSS between 2007 and 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. Significant differences between various subgroups in terms of disease recurrence, menstrual irregularity due to the disease, and pregnancy outcomes were analyzed. A total of 71 patients with BOTs and 33 patients with EOC were included. In the BOT group, the median age was 30 (range, 19-44) years. Recurrence occurred in eight patients, with one case exhibiting a malignant transformation into mucinous EOC. Among the 35 married patients with BOTs, 20 successfully conceived, resulting in 23 live births and 3 spontaneous abortions. A higher pregnancy rate was observed in those without prior childbirth (82.4%) than in those who had prior childbirth (33.3%). In the EOC group, the median age was 34 (range, 22-42) years. Recurrence occurred in one patient. Menstrual regularity was maintained in 69.7% of the patients. Among the 14 married patients in this group, 12 achieved a total of 15 pregnancies (including 2 twin pregnancies), 16 live births, and 1 spontaneous abortion. The results of the study confirmed that FSS is a favorable surgical option for young women with early-stage BOTs or EOC who wish to preserve their fertility. However, additional investigations are needed to validate these findings.

Psychopathy encompasses a constellation of personality traits, including interpersonal callousness, absence of remorse and guilt, and impulsivity. While extensive research has linked psychopathy to various antisocial behaviours, there has been a scarcity of studies investigating its association with prosocial behaviours, particularly within diverse sociocultural contexts. This comprehensive review explores recent literature that delves into the intricate interplay between psychopathy, prosocial behaviours, and self-construal. The current review reveals a complex and sometimes contradictory relationship between psychopathy and prosocial behaviours. The authors also examine the role of self-construal, a crucial sociocultural aspect, in relation to psychopathy and prosocial behaviours, and imply the intricate interplay between them. Amidst the review, the interactions between key constructs and sociocultural as well as contextual factors, including group identification and public awareness, are highlighted, and their potential role in modulating individuals' prosocial decision-making is discussed. At last, this review pinpointed notable research gaps: the potential moderating role of self-construal in the connection between psychopathy and prosocial behaviours, and a methodologically specific recommendation for future research is proposed. These findings consolidate the current evidence on psychopathy, self-construal and prosocial behaviours, and offer valuable insights into how sociocultural factors contribute to the heterogeneous expression of psychopathic traits, illuminating the directions for research on the development of culture-specific conceptualizations of psychopathy.

Ceftazidime/avibactam is an important option for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria. Haematological abnormalities are rare adverse events. We describe a case of a 63-year-old male who developed severe neutropenia following exposure to ceftazidime/avibactam in the intensive care unit for the treatment of abdominal infections. Six days after ceftazidime/avibactam was prescribed, the patient experienced a sheer drop in absolute neutrophil count, down to a minimum of 0.13 × 109 /L. A bone marrow examination showed neutrophilic maturation arrest. After careful screening of all drugs used by the patient and other potential causes of severe neutropenia, ceftazidime/avibactam was suspected to be the most likely culprit and was therefore replaced by cefoperazone/sulbactam, while a dose of colony-stimulating factor was given. The next day, neutrophils rose to 3.64 × 109 /L. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of severe neutropenia associated with ceftazidime/avibactam. When neutropenia occurs during treatment, the clinician should keep this possibility in mind. Regular monitoring of neutrophil counts for timely recognition, immediate discontinuation of the drug and substitution of antibiotics are key steps in management.

BACKGROUND: Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) is one of the most common causes of preterm birth. Antibiotic treatment is recommended to prolong the pregnancy course and reduce fetal morbidity in women with PPROM. However, the guidelines for antibiotic selection are based on studies done years ago, mostly in Western countries, which may not reflect the geographic, temporal, and ethnic variation in microbial colonization and infection in other parts of the world. We aimed to understand whether the antibiotics recommended by the current guidelines were sufficient to eradicate the majority of pathogens involved. METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective study at a tertiary medical center in Taiwan with patients recruited from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2019. All patient included had a confirmed diagnosis of PPROM. In this study, we aimed to investigate which broad-spectrum antibiotic was most suitable for PPROM cases in Taiwan. RESULTS: 133 women were included, and 121 women had positive culture results. Most of the pregnant women had one positive result (35.5%). The most common pathogen was Lactobacillus species (27.8%), followed by Streptococcus species (12.9%) and Staphylococcus species (12.09%). CONCLUSION: The most appropriate antibiotic therapy for PPROM was a combination of 1 g azithromycin given orally on admission plus a third-generation cephalosporin administered intravenously in the first 48 hours and followed by amoxicillin 500 mg per os for another five days. This recommended antibiotic regimen for women with PPROM needs further study under a randomized clinical trial with a larger study population to evaluate its efficacy.

Tightly focusing a spatially modulated laser beam lays the foundations for advanced optical techniques, such as a holographic optical tweezer and deterministic super-resolution imaging. Precisely mapping the subwavelength features of those highly confined fields is critical to improving the spatial resolution, especially in highly scattering biotissues. However, current techniques characterizing focal fields are mostly limited to conditions such as under a vacuum and on a glass surface. An optical probe with low cytotoxicity and resistance to autofluorescence is the key to achieving in vivo applications. Here, we use a newly emerging quantum reference beacon, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in the nanodiamond, to characterize the focal field of the near-infrared (NIR) laser focus in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). This biocompatible background-free focal field mapping technique has the potential to optimize in vivo optical imaging and manipulation.

Triply degenerate points (TDPs), which correspond to new types of topological semimetals, can support novel quasiparticles possessing effective integer spins while preserving Fermi statistics. Here by mapping the momentum space to the parameter space of a three-level system in a trapped ion, we experimentally explore the transitions between different types of TDPs driven by spin-tensor-momentum couplings. We observe the phase transitions between TDPs with different topological charges by measuring the Berry flux on a loop surrounding the gap-closing lines, and the jump of the Berry flux gives the jump of the topological charge (up to a 2π factor) across the transitions. For the Berry flux measurement, we employ a new method by examining the geometric rotations of both spin vectors and tensors, which lead to a generalized solid angle equal to the Berry flux. The controllability of a multilevel ion offers a versatile platform to study high-spin physics, and our Letter paves the way to explore novel topological phenomena therein.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is common in patients with hypertension. Prevalence estimates of MCI in hypertensive patients are needed to guide both public health and clinical decision making. A literature search was conducted in four databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science, from their inception to February 2021. The methodological quality assessment used the risk of bias tool. The pooled prevalence of MCI in hypertensive patients was determined by a random-effects model. Heterogeneity was explored using sensitivity analysis, subgroup analysis, and random effects meta-regression. Of 2314 references, 11 studies (47,179 participants) were included in the meta-analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of MCI in patients with hypertension was 30% (95% CI, 25-35), with significant heterogeneity present (I2 = 99.3%, p < 0.001). In subgroup analyses, Asian and European samples had a prevalence of 26% (95% CI, 20-31) and 40% (95% CI, 14-66), respectively; cross-sectional and cohort studies had a prevalence of 28% (95% CI, 24-32) and 38% (95% CI, -5-81); age older than 60 years had a prevalence of 28% (95% CI, 23-33); community-based and clinic-based samples had a prevalence of 17% (95% CI, 15-19) and 42% (95% CI, 23-62); and MCI diagnosis using the MoCA, NIA-AA, MMSE, and Peterson criteria had a prevalence of 64% (95% CI, 59-68), 18% (95% CI, 16-19), 19% (95% CI, 15-23), and 13% (95% CI, 9-17). Meta-regression analysis showed that different MCI diagnostic criteria could be the source of heterogeneity in the pooled results. MCI is common in patients with hypertension, with an overall prevalence of 30%. Earlier cognitive screening and management in hypertensive patients should be advocated.

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are a promising resource for cell-based therapy because of their high immunomodulation ability, tropism towards inflamed and injured tissues, and their easy access and isolation. Currently, there are more than 1200 registered MSC clinical trials globally. However, a lack of standardized methods to characterize cell safety, efficacy, and biodistribution dramatically hinders the progress of MSC utility in clinical practice. In this review, we summarize the current state of MSC-based cell therapy, focusing on the systemic safety and biodistribution of MSCs. MSC-associated risks of tumor initiation and promotion and the underlying mechanisms of these risks are discussed. In addition, MSC biodistribution methodology and the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of cell therapies are addressed. Better understanding of the systemic safety and biodistribution of MSCs will facilitate future clinical applications of precision medicine using stem cells.

High fidelity single-shot readout of qubits is a crucial component for fault-tolerant quantum computing and scalable quantum networks. In recent years, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond has risen as a leading platform for the above applications. The current single-shot readout of the NV electron spin relies on resonance fluorescence method at cryogenic temperature. However, the spin-flip process interrupts the optical cycling transition, therefore, limits the readout fidelity. Here, we introduce a spin-to-charge conversion method assisted by near-infrared (NIR) light to suppress the spin-flip error. This method leverages high spin-selectivity of cryogenic resonance excitation and flexibility of photoionization. We achieve an overall fidelity > 95% for the single-shot readout of an NV center electron spin in the presence of high strain and fast spin-flip process. With further improvements, this technique has the potential to achieve spin readout fidelity exceeding the fault-tolerant threshold, and may also find applications on integrated optoelectronic devices.

Our previous studies found overexpression of Musashi2 (MSI2) conduced to the progression and chemoresistance of pancreatic cancer (PC) by negative regulation of Numb and wild type p53 (wtp53). Now, we further investigated the novel signalling involved with MSI2 in PC. We identified inositol-3-phosphate synthase 1 (ISYNA1) as a novel tumour suppressor regulated by MSI2. High MSI2 and low ISYNA1 expression were prevalently observed in 91 PC tissues. ISYNA1 expression was negatively correlated with MSI2 expression, T stage, vascular permeation and poor prognosis in PC patients. What's more, patients expressed high MSI2 and low ISYNA1 level had a significant worse prognosis. And in wtp53 Capan-2 and SW1990 cells, ISYNA1 was downregulated by p53 silencing. ISYNA1 silencing promoted cell proliferation and cell cycle by inhibiting p21 and enhanced cell migration and invasion by upregulating ZEB-1. However, MSI2 silencing upregulated ISYNA1 and p21 but downregulated ZEB-1, which can be rescued by ISYNA1 silencing. Moreover, reduction of cell migration and invasion resulting from MSI2 silencing was significantly reversed by ISYNA1 silencing. In summary, MSI2 facilitates the development of PC through a novel ISYNA1-p21/ZEB-1 pathway, which provides new gene target therapy for PC.

Conventional information processors convert information between different physical carriers for processing, storage and transmission. It seems plausible that quantum information will also be held by different physical carriers in applications such as tests of fundamental physics, quantum enhanced sensors and quantum information processing. Quantum controlled molecules, in particular, could transduce quantum information across a wide range of quantum bit (qubit) frequencies-from a few kilohertz for transitions within the same rotational manifold1, a few gigahertz for hyperfine transitions, a few terahertz for rotational transitions, to hundreds of terahertz for fundamental and overtone vibrational and electronic transitions-possibly all within the same molecule. Here we demonstrate entanglement between the rotational states of a 40CaH+ molecular ion and the internal states of a 40Ca+ atomic ion2. We extend methods used in quantum logic spectroscopy1,3 for pure-state initialization, laser manipulation and state readout of the molecular ion. The quantum coherence of the Coulomb coupled motion between the atomic and molecular ions enables subsequent entangling manipulations. The qubit addressed in the molecule has a frequency of either 13.4 kilohertz1 or 855 gigahertz3, highlighting the versatility of molecular qubits. Our work demonstrates how molecules can transduce quantum information between qubits with different frequencies to enable hybrid quantum systems. We anticipate that our method of quantum control and measurement of molecules will find applications in quantum information science, quantum sensors, fundamental and applied physics, and controlled quantum chemistry.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review is the first one to assess the effectiveness and safety of extracorporeal shock-wave therapy (ESWT) for patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions (CMPC). METHODS: Seven electronic databases were searched for all relevant literature from inception to December 2019, including PubMed, the Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI), Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP), and Wanfang database. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of ESWT for chronic musculoskeletal pain will be included. Two reviewers will independently select eligible studies and collected the detailed information, assessed the methodological quality. A third reviewer will join in discussion to solve disagreements. The mean difference (MD) or standard mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) will be presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of ESWT for patients with chronic MSK pain conditions. RevMan 5.4 software will be used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: This systematic review will explore the effectiveness and safety of ESWT for patients with CMPC. The primary outcome includes pain level, and secondary outcome includes function limitation and adverse events. CONCLUSION: It can provide the updated evidence which is of great importance for patients, clinical practice and health related policy maker in ESWT treating CMPC.

A field-programmable-gate-array (FPGA) based time-to-digital-converter (TDC), which combines different types of delay chains in a single time measurement channel, is reported in this paper. A new TDC architecture is developed, and both a carry-chain and the DSP48E1 adders, which are integrated inside the FPGA chip, are employed to achieve high resolution time tagging. A single channel TDC has a 3.3 ps averaged bin size, a 5.4 ps single-shot precision, and a maximum sampling rate of 250 MSa/s. The differential-non-linearity of the single TDC channel is -3.3 ps/+24.1 ps, and the integral-non-linearity is within -10.4 ps/+68.6 ps. The TDC performance can be improved by using four TDC channels to measure one input signal, and a 3.4 ps single-shot precision can be obtained. Due to the implementation of the delicated TDC structure, only a small amount of digital resources is required to achieve the picosecond time measurement resolution. Therefore, the reported TDC architecture is suitable for multi-channel applications that require high time resolution measurements of multiple input signals.

Current guidelines recommend antibiotic prophylaxis for all patients with various degrees of cirrhosis and upper gastrointestinal (UGI) bleeding. This study assessed the need for antibiotic prophylaxis in patients with low Child-Pugh scores. We retrospectively screened all patients with cirrhosis who underwent upper endoscopies for UGI bleeding in a referral hospital in Taiwan between 2003 and 2014, from which 913 patients were enrolled after excluding patients with active bacterial infections, recent antibiotic use, early death, and Child-Pugh class C cirrhosis. Among them, 73 (8%) received prophylactic antibiotics, and 45 (4.9%) exhibited 14-day bacterial infection. Neither Child-Pugh score nor model for end stage liver disease score were optimal for predicting bacterial infection because their areas under the curves were 0.610 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.529-0.691) and 0.666 (95% CI: 0.591-0.742), respectively. Antibiotic prophylaxis did not reduce the risks of 14-day bacterial infection (relative risk [RR]: 0.932, 95% CI: 0.300-2.891, P = 0.902), 14-day rebleeding (RR: 0.791, 95% CI: 0.287-2.181, P = 0.650), or 42-day mortality (RR: 2.710, 95% CI: 0.769-9.524, P = 0.121). The results remained similar after propensity score adjustment. On-demand antibiotic treatment might suffice for patients with Child-Pugh class A/B cirrhosis and UGI bleeding.

BACKGROUND: Our previous study showed Musashi2 (MSI2) promoted chemotherapy resistance and pernicious biology of pancreatic cancer (PC) by down-regulating Numb and p53. We further explored the novel molecular mechanism involving its oncogenic role in PC development. METHODS: We investigated the potential role and mechanism of MSI2 in EGF-induced EMT in PC in vitro and vivo. RESULTS: EGF enhanced EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) phosphorylation, induced EMT and activated ZEB1-ERK/MAPK signaling in 2 PC cells. However, MSI2 silencing reversed EGF stimulated function, including inhibiting EGF-promoted EMT-like cell morphology and EGF-enhanced cell invasion and migration. Meanwhile, MSI2 silencing inhibited EGF-enhanced EGFR phosphorylation at tyrosine 1068 and reversed EGF-induced change of the key proteins in EMT and ZEB1-ERK/MAPK signaling (ZEB1, E-cad, ZO-1, ß-catenin, pERK and c-Myc). Additionally, MSI2 was co-stained and co-immunoprecipitated with ZEB1, pERK and c-Myc in PC cells by IF and co-IP, implying a close interaction between them. In vivo, MSI2 silencing inhibited pancreatic tumor size in situ and distant liver metastases. A close relationship of MSI2 with EMT and ZEB1-ERK/MAPK signaling were also observed in vivo and human PC samples, which coordinately promoted the poor prognosis of PC patients. CONCLUSIONS: MSI2 promotes EGF-induced EMT in PC via ZEB1-ERK/MAPK signaling.

Collective cell migration in 3D extracellular matrix (ECM) is crucial to many physiological and pathological processes. Migrating cells can generate active pulling forces via actin filament contraction, which are transmitted to the ECM fibers and lead to a dynamically evolving force network in the system. Here, we elucidate the role of this force network in regulating collective cell behaviors using a minimal active-particle-on-network (APN) model, in which active particles can pull the fibers and hop between neighboring nodes of the network following local durotaxis. Our model reveals a dynamic transition as the particle number density approaches a critical value, from an "absorbing" state containing isolated stationary small particle clusters, to an "active" state containing a single large cluster undergoing constant dynamic reorganization. This reorganization is dominated by a subset of highly dynamic "radical" particles in the cluster, whose number also exhibits a transition at the same critical density. The transition is underlaid by the percolation of "influence spheres" due to the particle pulling forces. Our results suggest a robust mechanism based on ECM-mediated mechanical coupling for collective cell behaviors in 3D ECM.

Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent inflammatory disease that affects up to 10% of women of reproductive age and accounts for up to 50% of female infertility cases. It has been highly associated with poorer outcomes of assisted reproductive technology (ART), including decreased oocyte retrieval, lower implantation, and pregnancy rates. A better understanding of the pathogenesis of endometriosis-associated infertility is crucial for improving infertility treatment outcomes. Current theories regarding how endometriosis reduces fertility include anatomical distortion, ovulatory dysfunction, and niche inflammation-associated peritoneal or implantation defects. This review will survey the latest evidence on the role of inflammatory niche in the peritoneal cavity, ovaries, and uterus of endometriosis patients. Nonhormone treatment strategies that target these inflammation processes are also included. Furthermore, mesenchymal stem cell-based therapies are highlighted for potential endometriosis treatment because of their immunomodulatory effects and tropism toward inflamed lesion foci. Potential applications of stem cell therapy in treatment of endometriosis-associated infertility in particular for safety and efficacy are discussed.

We demonstrate the ability to extract a spin-entangled state of two neutral atoms via postselection based on a measurement of their spatial configuration. Typically, entangled states of neutral atoms are engineered via atom-atom interactions. In contrast, in our Letter, we use Hong-Ou-Mandel interference to postselect a spin-singlet state after overlapping two atoms in distinct spin states on an effective beam splitter. We verify the presence of entanglement and determine a bound on the postselected fidelity of a spin-singlet state of (0.62±0.03). The experiment has direct analogy to creating polarization entanglement with single photons and hence demonstrates the potential to use protocols developed for photons to create complex quantum states with noninteracting atoms.
