RESUMEN

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of rebamipide ophthalmic suspension on optical quality and efficacy of patients with dry eye under different conditions. Methods: A comprehensive search across five databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wan Fang) was conducted for studies published through May 13, 2024, focusing on rebamipide for dry eye treatment. Results: A total of 11 studies including 334 patients with dry eye were included. Tear breakup time (TBUT) values of patients with dry eye increased significantly after 2 weeks (standardized mean difference [SMD] =1.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [0.05, 2.09]), 4 weeks (SMD = 1.26, 95% CI = [0.77, 1.75]), and 12 weeks (SMD = 1.04, 95% CI = [0.37, 1.71]) of rebamipide treatment. Subgroup analysis revealed that patients with dry eye wearing soft contact lens (SCL) exhibited higher TBUT values after 4 weeks of rebamipide treatment compared with those who received rebamipide alone. In addition, rebamipide significantly improved fluorescein staining score of patients with dry eye after 4 weeks of treatment (SMD = -0.34, 95% CI = [-0.63, -0.06]). However, 4 weeks of rebamipide treatment showed no significant effect on Schirmer I test values (SMD = -0.04, 95%, CI = [-0.43, 0.35]) and higher-order aberrations (SMD = -0.73, 95% CI = [-1.77, 0.30]). Conclusions: These results indicate a significant improvement in the efficacy of rebamipide treatment for patients with dry eye, particularly for those wearing SCL. The effect of rebamipide on visual quality was found to correlate with the underlying dry eye status.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of different pterygium surgery techniques on ocular surface (OS) in different follow-up periods. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wan Fang, and China Biology Medicine disc were searched for studies reporting pre- and post-operative OS parameters in pterygium. RESULTS: A total of 33 articles were finally included. Three OS parameters showed relatively consistent changing trends after surgery including ocular surface disease index (OSDI), tear film break-up time (BUT), and score of corneal fluorescein staining (SCFS). They worsened significantly at 1w post-operation and then gradually improved: OSDI and BUT showed obvious improvement in 1 m post-operation (SMD = - 0.58, 95%CI = [- 1.04, - 0.13]; SMD = 0.42, 95%CI = [0.06, 0.78]); SCFS was restored to preoperative levels in 3 m after surgery (SMD = - 0.54, 95%CI = [- 1.16, 0.07]). Another parameter, Schirmer test without anesthesia (SIT), presented transient increase at 1w post-operation (SMD = 0.87, 95%CI = [0.27, 1.47]) and presented a relatively stable improvement after 1 m post-operation (SMD = 0.52, 95%CI = [0.16, 0.89]). All parameters in amniotic membrane graft (AMT) showed better improvement in early stage and they showed non-inferior improvements in the long term compared with conjunctival autograft (CAG). Limbal-conjunctival autograft (LCAG) made excellent improvement to OS in the long term while pterygium excision (PE) showed the worst OS. The type of pterygium (primary and secondary), diabetes mellitus (DM) status, and fixation method had certain effects on the results. CONCLUSIONS: OS of pterygium is deteriorated at 1w post-operation then gradually improved to preoperative levels after 1 m post-operation. Among various surgery techniques, LCAG had the best improvement to OS which especially displayed in the long-term outcomes.

RESUMEN

trans-Anethole oxygenase (TAO) is the key enzyme responsible for the oxidation of trans-anethole to p-anisaldehyde. A strain, Paraburkholderia sp. MR185, was isolated from soil in Yulin star anise-planting regions using trans-anethole as a sole carbon source and a gene which encodes a protein with high similarities to a hypothetical protein of Paraburkholderia sp. MM5384-R2 which shows 61.27% identies with TAO from Pseudomonas putida JYR-1 was cloned and sequenced. The gene, tao, was expressed in E. coli cells and its protein product was purified by affinity chromatography through regenerated amorphous cellulose (RAC). SDS-PAGE analysis indicated a clear band of recombinant protein TAO, and its molecular weight, 38.3 kDa, was consistent with the theoretical value. Its enzyme activity of producing p-anisaldehyde from trans-anethole was detected by DNPH (2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine) chromogenic reaction and HPLC, and the specific activity of TAO reached 3.93 U/mg protein. Immobilized TAO on RAC was used to catalyze the production of p-anisaldehyde from trans-anethole, and the enzyme retained more than 60% of its initial activity after 10 uses. This is the first report on Paraburkholderia TAO.
