RESUMEN

Riboflavin (RF), as a common electron mediator that can accelerate extracellular electron transfer (EET), is usually used as a probe to confirm EET-microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). However, the acceleration mechanism of RF on EET-MIC is still unclear, especially the effect on gene expression in bacteria. In this study, a 13-mer antimicrobial peptide E6 and tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium sulfate (THPS) were used as new tools to investigate the acceleration mechanism of RF on Fe0-to-microbe EET in corrosion of EH36 steel caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 60 min after 20 ppm (v/v) THPS and 20 ppm THPS & 100 nM E6 were injected into P. aeruginosa 1 and P. aeruginosa 2 (two glass bottles containing P. aeruginosa with different treatments) at the 3-d incubation, respectively, P. aeruginosa 1 and P. aeruginosa 2 had a similar planktonic cell count, whereas the sessile cell count in P. aeruginosa 1 was 1.3 log higher than that in P. aeruginosa 2. After the 3-d pre-growth and subsequent 7-d incubation, the addition of 20 ppm (w/w) RF increased the weight loss and maximum pit depth of EH36 steel in P. aeruginosa 1 by 0.7 mg cm-2 and 4.1 µm, respectively, while only increasing those in P. aeruginosa 2 by 0.4 mg cm-2 and 1.7 µm, respectively. This suggests that RF can be utilized by P. aeruginosa biofilms since the corrosion rate should be elevated by the same value if it only acts on the planktonic cells. Furthermore, the EET capacity of P. aeruginosa biofilm was enhanced by RF because the protein expression of cytochrome c (Cyt c) gene in sessile cells was significantly increased in the presence of RF, which accelerated EET-MIC by P. aeruginosa against EH36 steel.

RESUMEN

In this study, a 13-mer antimicrobial peptide (RRWRIVVIRVRRC) named by E6 was used as an enhancer of a green biocide to mitigate the biocorrosion of EH36 ship steel. Results show that a low concentration of E6 (100 nM) alone was no-biocidal and could not resist the Desulfovibrio vulgaris adhesion on the EH36 steel surface. However, E6 enhanced the bactericidal effect of tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium sulfate (THPS). When E6 and THPS were both added to the bacteria and steel system, both the sessile D. vulgaris cells and biocorrosion rate of EH36 steel decreased significantly. Compared with the 80 ppm THPS alone treatment, the combination of 100 nM E6 + 80 ppm THPS led to an extra 1.6-log reduction in the sessile cell count. Fewer sessile D. vulgaris cells led to a lower extracellular electron transfer (EET) rate, directly resulting in 78% and 83% decreases in weight loss and pit depth of EH36 steel, respectively. E6 saved more than 50% of THPS dosage in this work to achieve a similar biocorrosion mitigation effect on EH36 steel.

RESUMEN

The microbial corrosion of marine structural steels (09CrCuSb low alloy steel (LAS) and Q235 carbon steel (CS)) in Desulfovibrio vulgaris medium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa medium based on seawater was investigated. In the D. vulgaris medium, the weight loss and maximum pit depth of 09CrCuSb LAS were 0.59 and 0.56 times as much as those of Q235 CS, respectively. Meanwhile, in the P. aeruginosa medium, the values were 0.53 and 0.67 times, respectively. Compared to Q235 CS, 09CrCuSb LAS contains more alloy elements (Cr, Ni, Cu, Al and Sb), which led to obvious inhibition of sessile bacteria growth but had no effect on planktonic bacteria. The number of live sessile cells on the 09CrCuSb LAS surface was 23.4 % and 26.9 % of that on the Q235 CS surface in the D. vulgaris medium and P. aeruginosa medium, respectively. Fewer sessile cells on the steel surface led to a lower extracellular electron transfer (EET) rate so that less corrosion occurred. In addition, the combined effect of alloying elements on grain refinement and passive film formation also improved the anti-corrosion property of the steels.

RESUMEN

The influence of overlying hydrodynamics on the exchange behaviour and fluxes of heavy metals at the sediment-water interface (SWI) is poorly understood. In the study, metals exchange behaviour and exchange rate at the SWI under resuspended and undisturbed scenario were investigated The results showed that dissolved Cr, Cu, Zn, and Pb concentrations increased rapidly to attain maximum values between 0.3 and 0.5 N·m-2 after the sediment resuspended. Following the quick release, metals concentrations gradually decreased and remained at relatively low levels, especially for Cu and Zn. Meanwhile, Cu, Zn, and Pb had higher potential remobilization potential in the undisturbed case. Calculating with the hydrodynamics in the Modaomen, the metals efflux under the resuspension scenario could reach 0.55 to 4130.83 mg·m-2·yr-1, which were 1-3 orders of magnitudes higher than the undisturbed case. Whether or not resuspension events occurred, estuarine sediments were source of heavy metals, especially in the weakly mixed zone.

RESUMEN

The effect of methanogenic archaea (Methanococcus maripaludis) on corrosion behavior of 316L stainless steel under different concentrations of organic electron donor (acetate) was investigated. The results showed that M. maripaludis can survive by utilizing 316L SS as an alternative energy source. The extracellular electron transfer from 316L SS relies on redox-active substances secreted by M. maripaludis. Corrosion of 316L SS is promoted along with decrease of acetate concentration. M. maripaludis causes severe pitting corrosion of 316L SS in the absence of acetate due to that more redox-active substances are secreted, which has little relationship with the M. maripaludis biofilm.

RESUMEN

The toxicity of microplastics (MPs) to marine microalgae has raised much concern. However, research at metabolic level is quite limited. In this study, the physiological and metabolic effects of polystyrene (PS) and aged polystyrene (A-PS) MPs on Dunaliella salina were investigated. Both PS and A-PS inhibited the growth of microalgae, but promoted the pigment synthesis in algal cells. The oxidative stress analysis indicated that PS and A-PS induced high production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and caused oxidative damage to algal cells. Particularly, the highest ROS level in PS and A-PS groups were 1.70- and 2.24-fold of that in the control group, respectively. Untargeted metabolomics analysis indicated that PS and A-PS significantly increased the differential metabolites. Compared with the control group, the significant upregulation of glycerophospholipids metabolites illustrated that severe membrane lipid peroxidation occurred in the MPs groups. Metabolic pathways analysis showed that PS and A-PS perturbed the amino acid-related metabolic pathways. In particular, the amino acid biosynthesis and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter pathways were significantly upregulated, thus promoting nitrogen storage and transmembrane transport in Dunaliella salina. Transmembrane transport requires a large amount of ATP; as a result, algal cell division is inhibited. In addition, A-PS stimulated more active glutathione metabolism than PS. These results enrich the understanding of the toxicity of PS MPs to microalgae at the metabolic level, and are helpful for further assessing the ecological impacts of MPs on microalgae.

RESUMEN

A quantitative understanding of the factors driving changes in grain filling is essential for effective prioritization of increasing maize yield. Grain filling is a significant stage in maize yield formation. Solar radiation is the energy source for grain filling, which is the ultimate driving factor for final grain weight and grain filling capacity that determine maize yield. Here, we first confirmed the quantitative relationships between grain filling parameters and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) by conducting field experiments using different shading and plant density conditions and cultivars in 2019 and 2020 in Xinjiang, China. The results showed that with every 100 MJ m-2 increase in PAR, the average grain filling rate (G ave), maximum grain-filling rate (G max), and the kernel weight at the time of maximum grain-filling rate (W max) increased by 0.073 mg kernel-1 day-1, 0.23 mg kernel-1 day-1, and 0.24 mg kernel-1, and the time of maximum grain-filling rate (T max) delayed by 0.91 day. Relative changes in PAR were significantly and positively correlated with relative changes in yield and G ave. With every 1% change in PAR, yield and G ave changed by 1.16 and 0.17%, respectively. From the perspective of grain filling capacity, DH618 was a more shade-resistant cultivar than XY335 and ZD958. It is urgent to breed maize cultivars with low light tolerance and high grain yield in the face of climate change, particularly the decrease in solar radiation.

RESUMEN

Recently, the effects of nanoplastics (NPs) on aquatic organisms have attracted much attention; however, research on the toxicity of NPs to microalgae has been insufficient. In the present study, the effects of polystyrene nanoplastics (nano-PS, 50 nm) on growth inhibition, chlorophyll content, oxidative stress, and algal toxin production of the marine toxigenic dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae Hulburt were investigated. Chlorophyll synthesis was promoted by nano-PS on day 2 but was inhibited on day 4; high concentrations of nano-PS (≥50 mg/L) significantly inhibited the growth of A. carterae. Moreover, despite the combined effect of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH), high reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were still induced by nano-PS (≥50 mg/L), indicating severe lipid peroxidation. In addition, the contents of extracellular and intracellular hemolytic toxins in nano-PS groups were significantly higher than those in control groups on days 2 and 8, except that those of extracellular hemolytic toxins in the 100 mg/L nano-PS group decreased on day 8 because of severe adsorption of hemolytic toxins to the nano-PS. Hence, the effects of nano-PS on A. carterae are closely linked to nano-PS concentration and surface properties and exposure time. These findings provide a deep understanding of the complex effects of NPs on toxigenic microalgae and present valuable data for assessing their environmental risks.

RESUMEN

Solar radiation is the energy source for crop growth, as well as for the processes of accumulation, distribution, and transfer of photosynthetic products that determine maize yield. Therefore, learning the effects of different solar radiation amounts on maize growth is especially important. The present study focused on the quantitative relationships between solar radiation amounts and dry matter accumulations and transfers in maize. Over two continuous years (2017 and 2018) of field experiments, maize hybrids XY335 and ZD958 were grown at densities of 4.5 × 104 (D1), 7.5 × 104 (D2), 9 × 104 (D3), 10.5 × 104 (D4), and 12 × 104 (D5) plants/ha at Qitai Farm (89°34'E, 44°12'N), Xinjiang, China. Shading levels were 15% (S1), 30% (S2), and 50% (S3) of natural light and no shading (CK). The results showed that the yields of the commonly planted cultivars XY335 and ZD958 at S1, S2, and S3 (increasing shade treatments) were 7.3, 21.2, and 57.6% and 11.7, 31.0, and 61.8% lower than the control yields, respectively. Also, vegetative organ dry matter translocation (DMT) and its contribution to grain increased as shading levels increased under different densities. The dry matter assimilation amount after silking (AADMAS) increased as solar radiation and planting density increased. When solar radiation was <580.9 and 663.6 MJ/m2, for XY335 and ZD958, respectively, the increase in the AADMAS was primarily related to solar radiation amounts; and when solar radiation was higher than those amounts for those hybrids, an increase in the AADMAS was primarily related to planting density. Photosynthate accumulation is a key determinant of maize yield, and the contributions of the vegetative organs to the grain did not compensate for the reduced yield caused by insufficient light. Between the two cultivars, XY335 showed a better resistance to weak light than ZD958 did. To help guarantee a high maize yield under weak light conditions, it is imperative to select cultivars that have great stay-green and photosynthetic efficiency characteristics.

RESUMEN

Graphene oxide (GO) is widely used in various fields and has raised concerns regarding its potential environmental fate and effect. However, there are few studies on its influence on coexisting pollutants. In this study, the phototransformation of GO and coexisting sulfamethazine (SMZ) under UV irradiation was investigated, with a focus on the role of reactive oxygen species. The results demonstrated that GO promoted the degradation of SMZ under UV irradiation. The higher the concentration of GO, the higher the degradation rate of SMZ, and the faster the first-order reaction rate. Two main radicals, ∙OH and 1O2, both contributed greatly in terms of regulating the removal of SMZ. Cl-, SO42-, and pH mainly promoted SMZ degradation by increasing the generation of ∙OH, while humic acid inhibited SMZ degradation due to the reduction of ∙OH. Moreover, after UV illumination, the GO suspension changed from light yellow to dark brown with increasing absorbance at a wavelength of 225 nm. Raman spectra revealed that the ID/IG ratio slightly decreased, indicating that some of the functional groups on the surface of GO were removed under low-intensity UV illumination. This study revealed that GO plays important roles in the photochemical transformation of environmental pollutants, which is helpful for understanding the environmental behaviors and risks of nanoparticles in aquatic environments.

RESUMEN

The toxicity of microplastics to marine organisms has attracted much attention; however, studies of their effects on marine microalgae remain limited. Here, the effects of the single and combined toxicity of polystyrene (PS) and triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) on the cell growth, photosynthesis, and oxidative stress of Chaetoceros meülleri were investigated. PS inhibited growth of the algae cells and caused a dose-dependent effect on oxidative stress. The significantly high production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced severe cell membrane damage, as confirmed by high fluorescence polarization. However, there was no obvious decrease in chlorophyll a content, and 80 mg/L of PS significantly promoted chlorophyll a synthesis. The TPhP also inhibited cell growth, except at low concentrations (0.2-0.8 mg/L), which stimulated algae growth over 48 h. Moreover, no obvious decrease in chlorophyll a and maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII was found in the TPhP experimental groups except for 3.2 mg/L TPhP, where the rapid light curves showed a significantly reduced photosynthetic capacity of algae. In addition, TPhP caused high ROS levels at 96 h, resulting in cell membrane damage. Using the additive index and independent action methods, the combined toxic effects of PS and TPhP on the algae were evaluated as antagonistic; however, cell membrane damage caused by high ROS levels was still noticeable. This study has shown the potential toxicity of PS and TPhP to marine microalgae, and provided insights into the combined risk assessment of TPhP and microplastics in the marine environment.

RESUMEN

The corrosion behavior of EH40 steel in seawater enriched with Methanococcus maripaludis was investigated through electrochemical methods and surface analysis techniques. The results revealed that the hydrogenotrophic M. maripaludis strain can utilize acetate as an alternative energy source. Corrosion of EH40 steel is initially inhibited, but prolonged exposure with the methanogen leads to an eventual corrosion propagation. During the early stage of immersion in M. maripaludis culture medium, the formation of a protective corrosion products film inhibits EH40 steel corrosion. The presence of M. maripaludis promotes both anodic and cathodic reactions of EH40 steel in the late stage of exposure. Surface analyses revealed that pitting corrosion is closely related to uneven distribution of M. maripaludis biofilm on EH40 steel surface.

RESUMEN

A new potentiometric sensor based on modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) was prepared for the sensitive and selective detection of total residual chlorine (TRC) in simulated electrolytically-treated ballast water (BW). The modified CPE was prepared using ferrocene (Fc) as the sensing species and paraffin oil as the binder. It is revealed that the addition of Fc can significantly shorten the response time and improve the reproducibility, selectivity, and stability of the sensor. The open circuit potential of the Fc-CPE is in linear proportion to the logarithm of TRC within the TRC concentration range from 1 mg∙dm-3 to 15 mg∙dm-3. In addition, the Fc-CPE sensor exhibits good selectivity to TRC over a wide concentration range of the possible co-exiting interference ions in seawater. The Fc-CPE electrode can be used as a convenient and reliable sensor for the continuous monitoring of TRC during the electrolytic treatment of BW.

RESUMEN

Marginal superiority is a common phenomenon in crops, and is caused by the competitiveness of individual plant for resources and crop adaptability to crowded growth conditions. In this study, in order to clarify the response of marginal superiority to maize morphology and plant-density tolerance, field experiments without water and nutrition stress were conducted at Qitai Farm in Xinjiang, China, in 2013-2014 and 2016-2019. The results showed that no more than three border rows of all the cultivars had marginal superiority under high density, about 90% of all the cultivars had no more than two border row that had marginal superiority and a significant negative correlation was observed between marginal superiority and population grain yield (first border row: y = - 2.193x + 213.9, p < 0.05; second border row: y = - 2.076x + 159.2, p < 0.01). Additionally, marginal superiority was found to have a significant positive relationship with plant density (first border row: y = 6.049x + 73.76, p < 0.01; second border row: y = 1.88x + 95.41, p < 0.05) and the average leaf angle above the ear (first border row: y = 2.306x + 103.1, p < 0.01). These results indicated that the smaller the leaf angle above the ear, the weaker the marginal superiority and the higher the grain yield. It suggests that the magnitude of marginal superiority in the border rows can be an indicator for plant-density tolerance under high density. What's more, cultivars with small leaf angle above the ear can be selected to weaken the marginal superiority and improve grain yield under high plant density. Conversely, cultivars with a large leaf angle above the ear can be selected to achieve higher individual yield in intercropping systems with no more than four rows alternated with other crops.

RESUMEN

Gene detection has important applications in biology, biomedical engineering, clinical, environmental, and marine fields. Rapid, sensitive, and selective recognition of specific genes is essential in practical applications. In this study, we describe a facile and sensitive DNA sensing platform for specific and quantitative detection of Heterosigma akashiwo, which is one of the causative agents of red tides. Fast and sensitive detection is achieved by using chemically synthesized graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. Probe DNA is designed according to the specific DNA fragments of harmful algae and labeled with fluorescent molecules FAM (fluorescein-based dye). GO nanosheet solution is made, in which the strong interaction between FAM-labeled probe and GO nanosheets keeps them in close proximity, facilitating the fluorescence quenching of the fluorophore by GO nanosheets. In the presence of a complementary target DNA, the FAM-labeled DNA probe and the target DNA hybridize and desorb from the surface of GO nanosheets, resulting in restoration of fluorophore fluorescence. The concentration of target DNA fragments is analyzed by the fluorescence intensity at ~ 520 nm with emission wavelength of 480 nm. The sensitive detecting platform achieved stable measurement of 1 pM specific genes from Heterosigma akashiwo. Our GO nanosheet-based DNA-sensing platform performs fast and sensitive detection of trace amount of DNA, and enables quantitative recognition of harmful algae, which has promising applications in real-time monitoring in the marine environment of red tide generative dynamics, allowing effective control, particularly in relation to marine aquaculture.

RESUMEN

In this study, the photochemistry of ZnO NPs and their effect on phototransformation of coexisting pollutants (sulfamethazine, SMZ) were systematically investigated under UV illumination. SMZ (40 µM) degradation was accelerated by ZnO NPs, as the observed reaction rate constant (kobs) increased from 0.0809 h-1 to 0.7982 h-1 at the concentration of 5-50 mg/L ZnO NPs. Free radical quenching and quantification experiments indicated the reactive oxygen species, especially the hydroxyl radicals (OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2), made great contributions to SMZ degradation. Moreover, SMZ was prone to be degraded at high pH with kobs reaching upto 0.5734 h-1 at pH 12.0. The presence of Cl- (1000 mM) reduced the SMZ decomposition greatly by 2.4-fold while the effects of SO42- (30 mM) were very limited. Natural organic matter including humic acid and tannic acid both inhibited the degradation of SMZ with kobs decreasing by 35.4-fold and 132-fold, respectively. During the photoreaction process, ZnO NPs fragmented into relative small size pieces obviously along with the release of Zn2+. Finally, the possible cotransformation pathways of ZnO NPs and SMZ were proposed based on SMZ degradation intermediates and the above results. These findings of the present study suggested that the photoreactions of ZnO NPs greatly influenced the transformation of contaminants and ZnO NPs themselves in aquatic environment, which may have significant implications for the fate assessment of NPs and environmental pollutants.

RESUMEN

Microplastics have attracted much attention in recent years as they can interact with pollutants in water environment. However, nanoplastics (NPs) with or without the surface functionalization modification have not been thoroughly explored. Here, the sorption behaviors of two fluoroquinolones (FQs), including norfloxacin (NOR) and levofloxacin (LEV) on polystyrene NPs (nano-PS) and carboxyl-functionalized polystyrene NPs (nano-PS-COOH) were investigated. The results showed that sorption isotherms were nonlinear and well fitted by Langmuir model. The sorption capacities of NOR and LEV on nano-PS-COOH were higher than those on nano-PS, and their physical interactions, including polar interaction, electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding may be the dominant mechanisms. Moreover, the increase of pH firstly increased the sorption of two FQs on NPs and then decreased because NOR and LEV had a reverse charge at different pH values. Salinity and dissolved organic matter both inhibited the sorption process. These findings show that NPs with or without the surface functionalization modification have different sorption behaviors for environmental pollutants, which deserve our further concern.
