RESUMEN

Conventional retinal implants involve complex surgical procedures and require invasive implantation. Temporal Interference Stimulation (TIS) has achieved noninvasive and focused stimulation of deep brain regions by delivering high-frequency currents with small frequency differences on multiple electrodes. In this study, we conducted in silico investigations to evaluate extraocular TIS's potential as a novel visual restoration approach. Different from the previously published retinal TIS model, the new model of extraocular TIS incorporated a biophysically detailed retinal ganglion cell (RGC) population, enabling a more accurate simulation of retinal outputs under electrical stimulation. Using this improved model, we made the following major discoveries: (1) the maximum value of TIS envelope electric potential ([Formula: see text] showed a strong correlation with TIS-induced RGC activation; (2) the preferred stimulating/return electrode (SE/RE) locations to achieve focalized TIS were predicted; (3) the performance of extraocular TIS was better than same-frequency sinusoidal stimulation (SSS) in terms of lower RGC threshold and more focused RGC activation; (4) the optimal stimulation parameters to achieve lower threshold and focused activation were identified; and (5) spatial selectivity of TIS could be improved by integrating current steering strategy and reducing electrode size. This study provides insights into the feasibility and effectiveness of a low-invasive stimulation approach in enhancing vision restoration.

The rational installation of pharmacophores targeting HSP90 and LSD1 axes has achieved significant anti-cancer capacity in prostate and colorectal cancer. Among the series of hybrids, inhibitor 6 exhibited remarkable anti-proliferative activity against prostate cancer cell lines PC-3 and DU145, with GI50 values of 0.24 and 0.30 µM, respectively. It demonstrated notable efficacy in combinatorial attack and cell death initiation towards apoptosis. The cell death process was mediated by PARP induction and γH2AX signaling, and was also characterized as caspase-dependent and Bcl-xL/Bax-independent. Notably, no difference in eye size or morphology was observed in the zebrafish treated with compound 6 compared to the reference group (AUY922). The profound treatment response in docetaxel-resistant PC-3 cells highlighted the dual inhibitory ability in improving docetaxel sensitivity. Additionally, at a minimum concentration of 1.25 µM, compound 6 effectively inhibited the growth of patient-derived colorectal cancer (CRC) organoids for up to 10 days in vitro. Together, the designed HSP90/LSD1 inhibitors present a novel route and significant clinical value for anti-cancer drug therapy.

Polyphenols, as subordinate metabolites of plants, have demonstrated significant antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant action in scientific learn. These compounds exert their effects through various mechanisms, containing interference with microbial cell structures, rule of host immune responses, and neutralization of free radicals. This multifaceted activity positions polyphenols as promising candidates for maintaining human health and treating related diseases. Notably, in the context of escalating antibiotic resistance, the antibacterial properties of polyphenols offer innovative avenues for the development of new therapeutic agents. Additionally, their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects hold substantial potential for treating inflammatory diseases and mitigating the aging process. This review aims to summarize the latest findings on the biological activities of polyphenols, highlighting their mechanisms of action and potential applications in health and disease management. Furthermore, optimizing polyphenol extraction methods aligns with the goals of sustainable and green processing, reducing environmental impact while enhancing food safety and extending shelf life. Employing advanced analytical techniques, such as spectroscopy and chromatography, can ensure the accurate evaluation of polyphenol content and efficacy. These efforts collectively contribute to the ongoing improvement of food processing practices and product quality, promoting a healthier and more sustainable future in the food industry.

The n-type semiconductor SnO2 with a wide band gap (3.6 eV) is massively used in gas-sensitive materials, but pure SnO2 still suffers from a high operating temperature, low response, and tardy responding speed. To solve these problems, we prepared small-sized pure SnO2 using hydrothermal and freeze-drying methods (SnO2-FD) and compared it with SnO2 prepared using a normal drying method (SnO2-AD). The sensor of SnO2-FD had an ultra-high sensitivity to NO2 at 100 °C with excellent selectivity and humidity stability. The outstanding gas sensing properties are attributed to the modulation of energy band structure and the increased carrier concentration, making it more accessible for electron exchange with NO2. The excellent gas sensing properties of SnO2-FD indicate its tremendous potential as a NO2 sensor.

BACKGROUND: Radioresistance and immune escape are crucial reasons for unsatisfactory therapeutic effects of glioblastoma (GBM). Although triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-2 (TREM2) involved in forming immunosuppressive microenvironment, but the underlying mechanism and its roles in mediating cancer radioresistance remain unclear, moreover, the efficient delivery of drugs targeting TREM2 to GBM encounters serious challenges. Hence, this study aimed to elucidate the effect and mechanisms of targeted TREM2 silencing on reversing the radioresistance and immune escape of GBM aided by a glutathione-responsive biomimetic nanoparticle (NP) platform. METHODS: Radioresistant GBM cell lines and TREM2 stable knockdown GBM cell lines were firstly established. RNA sequencing, colony formation assay, western blot, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and co-immunoprecipitation assay were used to detect the molecular mechanisms of TREM2 in regulating the radioresistance and immune escape of GBM. The glutathione-responsive biomimetic NP, angiopep-2 (A2)- cell membrane (CM)-NP/siTREM2/spam1, was then constructed to triply and targeted inhibit TREM2 for in vivo study. Orthotopic GBM-bearing mouse models were established to evaluate the anti-GBM effect of TREM2 inhibition, multiplex immunofluorescence assay was conducted to detect the infiltration of immune cells. RESULTS: TREM2 was a regulator in accelerating the radioresistance and immune escape of GBM through participating in DNA damage repair and forming a positive feedback loop with high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) to cascade the activation of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/protein kinase B (Akt) signaling. A2-CM-NP/siTREM2/spam1 was successfully synthesized with excellent passive targeting, active targeting and homologous targeting, and the in vivo results exhibited its remarkable anti-GBM therapeutic effect through promoting the infiltration of type 1 helper T cells and CD8+T cells, reducing the infiltration of type 2 helper T cells and regulatory T cells, repolarizing macrophages to M1-type, and decreasing the secretion of pro-tumor and immunosuppressive cytokines. CONCLUSIONS: Targeting TREM2 therapy is a promising avenue for optimizing radiotherapy and immunotherapy to improve the prognosis of GBM patients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of hydroxychloroquine sulfate (HCQ) in the treatment of low risk phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R)-associated membranous nephropathy (MN). METHODS: A total of 110 patients with low risk PLA2R-associated MN were included in the study. Patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were assigned randomly to two groups: the HCQ treatment group and the control group. The control group received standard supportive treatment according to the guidelines, while the HCQ treatment group received HCQ in addition to the supportive treatment. The clinical data of the patients were analyzed, with comparisons made at baseline and during the six-month follow-up period. Any adverse reactions were recorded. RESULTS: The baseline data were comparable between the HCQ treatment group and the control group. At the end of the six-month follow-up period, the reductions in urine protein excretion and serum PLA2R antibody titer were more notable in the HCQ treatment group than those in the control group, with these differences being statistically significant (p < 0.05). Compared to the control group, the HCQ treatment group had fewer patients who were converted from low risk to moderate-to-high risk (p = 0.084). There were also no severe adverse reactions in the HCQ treatment group. CONCLUSION: In patients with low risk PLA2R-associated MN, adequate supportive therapy combined with HCQ is superior to supportive therapy alone in controlling proteinuria and reducing serum PLA2R antibody titers. Additionally, our study demonstrated that the incidence of adverse reactions did not increase. Amyloid-ß oligomers (AßOs), crucial toxic proteins in early Alzheimer's disease (AD), precede the formation of Aß plaques and cognitive impairment. In this context, we present our iterative process for developing novel near-infrared fluorescent (NIRF) probes specifically targeting AßOs, aimed at early AD diagnosis. An initial screening identified compound 18 as being highly selective for AßOs. Subsequent analysis revealed that compound 20 improved serum stability while retaining affinity for AßOs. The most promising iteration, compound 37, demonstrated exceptional qualities: a high affinity for AßOs, emission in the near-infrared region, and good biocompatibility. Significantly, ex vivo double staining indicated that compound 37 detected AßOs in AD mouse brain and in vivo imaging experiments showed that compound 37 could differentiate between 4-month-old AD mice and age-matched wild-type mice. Therefore, compound 37 has emerged as a valuable NIRF probe for early detection of AD and a useful tool in exploring AD's pathological mechanisms.

Migraine is a prevalent and disabling neurovascular disorder, with women being more susceptible, characterized by unilateral throbbing headache, often accompanied by nausea and vomiting, and often associated with various comorbidities such as brain and cardiovascular diseases, which can have a serious impact on quality of life. Although nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the main first-line medications for the treatment of pain, long-term use often leads to side effects and drug addiction, which emphasizes the need to investigate alternative pain management strategies with fewer adverse effects. Complementary and alternative medicine is a viable pain intervention often used in conjunction with traditional medications, including acupuncture, herbs, moxibustion, transcutaneous electrical stimulation, bio-supplements, and acupressure, which offer non-pharmacological alternatives that are now viable pain management options. This review focuses on the mechanistic doctrine of migraine generation and the role and potential mechanisms of Complementary and Alternative Therapies (CAT) in the treatment of migraine, summarizes the research evidences for CAT as an adjunct or alternative to conventional therapies for migraine, and focuses on the potential of novel migraine therapies (calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) antagonists and pituitary adenylyl cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP) antagonists) with the aim of evaluating CAT therapies as adjunctive or alternative therapies to conventional migraine treatment, thereby providing a broader perspective on migraine management and the design of treatment programs for more effective pain management.

Astaxanthin was encapsulated in liposomes by a thin layer dispersion and ultrasound method using soybean phospholipid. The digestion properties of liposomes for encapsulating astaxanthin were investigated in light of particle size, size distribution, zeta potential, and microstructure during in vitro digestion as a function of time. These results exhibited that the average particle size increased gradually with liposomal vesicles retained round shapes and a fairly uniform distribution after passage through the simulated gastric fluid digestion. The result revealed that astaxanthin-loaded liposomes were stable in low pH conditions. It was also found that the mixed micelles formed in a simulated intestinal fluid. The zeta potential of astaxanthin-loaded liposomes had a decrease in negativity after digestion. In comparison with free astaxanthin, there was an appreciable increase in the bioaccessibility of astaxanthin after encapsulation in liposomes. This enhancement can be attributed to more soluble astaxanthin in the mixed micelles for astaxanthin-loaded liposomes. It indicated that the barrier of the liposomal bilayer could inhibit astaxanthin fading and leaking after encapsulation in liposomes. These results provide useful information for designing more stable delivery systems in the gastrointestinal tract and improving the bioaccessibility of lipophilic nutraceuticals.

Hyper cross-linked polymers (HCPs), as a key precursor of hard carbon (HC) anode materials, stand out because of their capacity for molecular-scale structural design and comparatively straightforward preparation techniques, which are not seen in other porous materials synthesized procedure. A novel synthesis method of HCPs is developed in this paper, which is through the incorporation of functional macromolecules, the structural control and heteroatom doping of the product has been achieved, thus augmenting its electrochemical performance in batteries. In this work, carbonized tetraphenylporphyrin zinc (TPP-Zn) doped HCP-based hard carbon (CTHCP) with stable structure was prepared by Friedel-Crafts reaction and carbonization by using naphthalene and trace TPP-Zn as monomers, dimethoxybenzene (DMB) as crosslinking agent and FeCl3 as catalyst. The introduction of TPP-Zn, a functional macromolecule with unique two-dimensional structure, realized the pore structure regulation and N doping of the raw carbonized HCP-based hard carbon (CHCP). The results showed that CTHCP had higher mesoporous volume, N content and wider layer spacing than CHCP. In addition, CTHCP anode exhibited excellent Li+/Na+ storage performance, initial reversible capacity, rate performance and long cycle life. More amount of N-containing (N-5) active sites and mesoporous content in CTHCP anode was the main reason for the improvement of Na+ storage effect. While the increased interlayer spacing had a greater effect on the lithium storage capacity. This study uncovered the design rules of HC anode materials suitable for Li+/Na+ batteries and provided a new idea for the preparation of high-performance HC anode materials.

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether there are sex-based differences in the administration of opioid analgesic drugs among inpatients after cardiac surgery. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. SETTING: At a tertiary academic referral center. PARTICIPANTS: Adult patients who underwent cardiac surgery from 2014 to 2019. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The primary outcome was the cumulative oral morphine equivalent dose (OMED) for the postoperative admission. Secondary outcomes were the daily difference in OMED and the administration of nonopioid analgesics. The authors developed multivariate regression models controlling for known confounders, including weight and length of stay. A total of 3,822 patients (1,032 women and 2,790 men) were included. The mean cumulative OMED was 139 mg for women and 180 mg for men, and this difference remained significant after adjustment for confounders (adjusted mean difference [aMD], -33.21 mg; 95% CI, -47.05 to -19.36 mg; p < 0.001). The cumulative OMED was significantly lower in female patients on postoperative days 1 to 5, with the greatest disparity observed on day 5 (aMD, -89.83 mg; 95% CI, -155.9 to -23.80 mg; p = 0.009). By contrast, women were more likely to receive a gabapentinoid (odds ratio, 1.91; 95% CI, 1.42-2.58; p < 0.001). The authors found no association between patient sex and the administration of other nonopioid analgesics or specific types of opioid analgesics. The authors found no association between patient sex and pain scores recorded within the first 48 hours after extubation, or the number of opioids administered in close proximity to pain assessments. CONCLUSIONS: Female sex was associated with significantly lower amounts of opioids administered after cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: Platelet transfusion is common in cardiac surgery, but some studies have suggested an association with harm. Accordingly, we investigated the association of perioperative platelet transfusion with morbidity and mortality. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from the Australian Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons National Cardiac Surgery Database. We included consecutive adults from 2005 to 2018 across 40 centers. We used inverse probability of treatment weighting via entropy balancing to investigate the association of perioperative platelet transfusion with our 2 primary outcomes, operative mortality (composite of both 30-day and in-hospital mortality) and 90-day mortality, as well as multiple other clinically relevant secondary outcomes. RESULTS: Among 119,132 eligible patients, 25,373 received perioperative platelets and 93,759 were considered controls. After entropy balancing, platelet transfusion was associated with reduced operative mortality (odds ratio [OR], 0.63; 99% confidence interval [CI], 0.47-0.84; P < .0001) and 90-day mortality (OR, 0.66; 99% CI, 0.51-0.85; P < .0001). Moreover, it was associated with reduced odds of deep sternal wound infection (OR, 0.57; 99% CI, 0.36-0.89; P = .0012), acute kidney injury (OR, 0.84; 99% CI, 0.71-0.99; P = .0055), and postoperative renal replacement therapy (OR, 0.71; 99% CI, 0.54-0.93; P = .0013). These positive associations were observed despite an association with increased odds of return to theatre for bleeding (OR, 1.55; 99% CI, 1.16-2.09; P < .0001), pneumonia (OR, 1.26; 99% CI, 1.11-1.44; P < .0001), intubation for longer than 24 hours postoperatively (OR, 1.13; 99% CI, 1.03-1.24; P = .0012), inotrope use for >4 hours postoperatively (OR, 1.14; 99% CI, 1.11-1.17; P < .0001), readmission to hospital within 30 days of surgery (OR, 1.22; 99% CI, 1.11-1.34; P < .0001), as well as increased drain tube output (adjusted mean difference, 89.2 mL; 99% CI, 77.0 mL-101.4 mL; P < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: In cardiac surgery patients, perioperative platelet transfusion was associated with reduced operative and 90-day mortality. Until randomized controlled trials either confirm or refute these findings, platelet transfusion should not be deliberately avoided when considering odds of death.

The rational design of low-cost, efficient, and stable heterojunction catalysts for pH-universal hydrogen evolution is attracting increasing attention towards a sustainable hydrogen economy. Herein, a sequential spatial restriction-pyrolysis route is developed to confine Mott-Schottky-type Co-Co2P heterojunctions embedded in the one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotube-modified three-dimensional (3D) N,P dual-doped carbon matrix (Co-Co2P@CNT//CM). The synergistic effect between the abundant Mott-Schottky heterointerfaces and the 1D/3D dual carbon confinement system enables fully exposed active sites and facilitated charge transfer dynamics, thus triggering favorable electronic structures of Co-Co2P@CNT//CM. As a result, Co-Co2P@CNT//CM heterojunctions exhibit excellent pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with overpotentials of 142, 205, and 262 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1.0 M KOH, and 1.0 M phosphate buffer saline (PBS), respectively. The theoretical results demonstrated that the Mott-Schottky effect can induce an oriented interfacial charge exchange between Co and Co2P. This can lower the reactive kinetic barrier and endow Co-Co2P@CNT//CM with ideal hydrogen adsorption free energy, which efficiently drives the production of H2 from electrolytic water.

Transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES) used in a therapeutic device has been demonstrated significant neuroprotective effect for rescuing retinal function. However, the diffuse electric field induced by conventional TES devices reduced their spatial resolution and selectivity, limiting their capability of actively stimulating a severely diseased retina. A cutting-edge neuromodulation approach named temporal interference stimulation (TIS) was reported to induce electric fields focalizing on local neuronal targets. Despite the competent feasibility of application in retinal TIS, the interpretation of characteristics of spatial resolution and selectivity under TIS remains rudimentary. In this study, we conduct in silico investigations to understand the characteristics of spatial selectivity and resolution using a finite element model of a multi-layered eyeball and multiple electrode configuration. By simulating different metrics of electric potentials envelope modulated by TIS, our model supports the possibility of achieving mini-invasive and spatially selective electrical stimulation using retinal TIS. These simulations provide theoretical evidence on the basis of which sophisticated devices for improved spatial selectivity can be designed.Clinical Relevance- This study provides a theoretical basis for understanding how the design of electrode configuration impacts transcorneal TIS performance. This model can guide future development of transcorneal TIS configurations and stimulation strategies that may benefit patients with inherited retinal diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) transfusion in the intensive care unit (ICU) is commonly used to treat coagulopathy and bleeding in cardiac surgery, despite suggestion that it may increase the risk of morbidity and mortality through mechanisms such as fluid overload and infection. METHODS: We retrospectively studied consecutive adults undergoing cardiac surgery from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III and IV databases. We applied propensity score matching to investigate the independent association of within-ICU FFP transfusion with mortality and other key clinical outcomes. RESULTS: Of our 12,043 adults who met inclusion criteria, 1585 (13.2%) received perioperative FFP with a median of 2.48 units per recipient (interquartile range [IQR]: 2.04, 4.33) at a median time of 1.83 h (IQR: 0.75, 3.75) after ICU admission. After propensity matching of 952 FFP recipients to 952 controls, we found no significant association between FFP use and hospital mortality (odds ratio (OR): 1.58; 99% confidence interval (CI): 0.57, 3.71), suspected infection (OR: 0.72; 99% CI: 0.49, 1.08), or acute kidney injury (OR: 1.23; 99% CI: 0.91, 1.67). However, FFP was associated with increased days in hospital (adjusted mean difference (AMD): 1.28; 99% CI: 0.27, 2.41; p = .0050), days in intensive care (AMD: 1.28; 99% CI: 0.27, 2.28; p = .0011), and chest tube output in millilitres up to 8 h after transfusion (AMD: 92.98; 99% CI: 52.22, 133.74; p < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: After propensity matching, FFP transfusion was not associated with increased hospital mortality, but was associated with increased length of stay and no decrease in bleeding in the early post-transfusion period.

Heterostructured nanomaterials have arisen as electrocatalysts with great potential for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), considering their superiority in integrating different active components but are plagued by their insufficient active site density in a wide pH range. In this report, double sulfur-vacancy-decorated CoS1.097@MoS2 core-shell heterojunctions are designed, which contain a primary structure of hollow CoS1.097 nanocubes and a secondary structure of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets. Taking advantage of the core-shell type heterointerfaces and double sulfur-vacancy, the CoS1.097@MoS2 catalyst exhibits pH-universal HER performance, achieving the overpotentials at 10 mA cm-2 of 190, 139, and 220 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1.0 M KOH, and 1.0 M PBS, respectively. Systematic theoretical results show that the double sulfur-vacancy can endow the CoS1.097@MoS2 core-shell heterojunctions with promoted electron/mass transfer and enhanced reactive kinetics, thus boosting HER performance. This work clearly demonstrates an indispensable role of double sulfur-vacancy in enhancing the electrocatalytic HER performance of core-shell type heterojunctions under a wide pH operating condition.

The clearance of apoptotic cells by efferocytes such as macrophages and dendritic cells is termed as "efferocytosis", it plays critical roles in maintaining tissue homeostasis in multicellular organisms. Currently, available studies indicate that efferocytosis-related molecules and pathways are tightly associated with cancer development, metastasis and treatment resistance, efferocytosis also induces an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment and assists cancer cells escape from immune surveillance. In this study, we reviewed the underlying mechanisms of efferocytosis in mediating the occurrence of cancer immune escape, and then emphatically summarized the strategies of using efferocytosis as therapeutic target to enhance the anti-tumor efficacies of immune checkpoint inhibitors, hoping to provide powerful evidences for more effective therapeutic regimens of malignant tumors.

The formation of particle clusters can substantially modify the dynamics and mechanical properties of suspensions in both two and three dimensions. While it has been well established that large network-spanning clusters increase the rigidity of particle systems, it is still unclear how the presence of localized nonpercolating clusters affects the dynamics and mechanical properties of particle suspensions. Here, we introduce self-assembled localized particle clusters at a fluid-fluid interface by mixing a fraction of Janus particles in a monolayer of homogeneous colloids. Each Janus particle binds to a few nearby homogeneous colloids, resulting in numerous small clusters uniformly distributed across the interface. Using a custom magnetic rod interfacial stress rheometer, we apply linear oscillatory shear to the particle-laden fluid interface. By analyzing the local affine deformation of particles from optical microscopy, we show that particles in localized clusters experience substantially lower shear-induced stretching than their neighbors outside clusters. We hypothesize that such heterogeneous dynamics induced by particle clusters increase the effective surface coverage of particles, which in turn enhances the shear moduli of the interface, as confirmed by direct interfacial rheological measurements. Our study illustrates the microscopic dynamics of small clusters in a shear flow and reveals their profound effects on the macroscopic rheology of particle-laden fluid interfaces. Our findings open an avenue for designing interfacial materials with improved mechanical properties via the control of formation of localized particle clusters.

The soil microbiota is critical to plant performance. Improving the ability of plant-associated soil probiotics is thus essential for establishing dependable and sustainable crop yields. Although fertilizer applications may provide an effective way of steering soil microbes, it is still unknown how the positive effects of soil-borne probiotics can be maximized and how their effects are mediated. This work aims to seek the ecological mechanisms involved in cabbage growth using bio-organic fertilizers. We conducted a long-term field experiment in which we amended soil with non-sterilized organic or sterilized organic fertilizer either containing Trichoderma guizhouense NJAU4742 or lacking this inoculum and tracked cabbage plant growth and the soil fungal community. Trichoderma-amended bio-organic fertilizers significantly increased cabbage plant biomass and this effect was attributed to changes in the resident fungal community composition, including an increase in the relative abundance and number of indigenous soil growth-promoting fungal taxa. We specifically highlight the fundamental role of the biodiversity and population density of these plant-beneficial fungal taxa in improving plant growth. Together, our results suggest that the beneficial effects of bio-organic fertilizer seem to be a combination of the biological inoculum within the organic amendment as well as the indirect promotion through effects on the diversity and composition of the soil resident plant-beneficial fungal microbiome.

BACKGROUND: The 'weekend effect' is the term given to the observed discrepancy regarding patient care and outcomes on weekends compared to weekdays. This study aimed to determine whether the weekend effect exists within Aotearoa New Zealand (AoNZ) for patients undergoing emergency laparotomy (EL), given recent advances in management of EL patients. METHODS: A cohort study was conducted across five hospitals, comparing the outcomes of weekend and weekday acute EL. A propensity-score matched analysis was used to remove potential confounding patient characteristics. RESULTS: Of the 487 patients included, 132 received EL over the weekend. There was no statistically significant difference between patients undergoing EL over the weekend compared to weekdays. Mortality rates were comparable between the weekday and weekend cohorts (P = 0.464). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that modern perioperative care practice in New Zealand obviates the 'weekend' effect.
