INTRODUCTION: Fluorosis is a global public health disease affecting more than 50 countries and 500 million people. Excessive fluoride damages the liver and intestines, yet the mechanisms and therapeutic approaches remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: To explore the mechanisms by which fluoride-induced intestinal-hepatic damage and vitamin B2 alleviation. METHODS: Fluoride and/or vitamin B2-treated IL-17A knockout and wild-type mouse models were established, the morphological and functional changes of liver and gut, total bile acid biosynthesis, metabolism, transport, and regulation of FXR-FGF15 signaling pathways were evaluated, the ileal microbiome was further analyzed by 16S rDNA sequence. Finally, Bifidobacterium supplementation mouse model was designed and re-examined the above indicators. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that fluoride induced hepatointestinal injury and enterohepatic circulation disorder by altering the synthesis, transporters, and FXR-FGF15 pathway regulation of total bile acid. Importantly, the ileum was found to be the most sensitive and fluoride changed ileal microbiome particularly by reducing abundance of Bifidobacterium. While vitamin B2 supplementation attenuated fluoride-induced enterohepatic circulation dysfunction through IL-17A and ileal microbiome, Bifidobacterium supplementation also reversed fluoride-induced hepatointestinal injury. CONCLUSION: Fluoride induces morphological and functional impairment of liver and gut tissues, as well as enterohepatic circulation disorder by altering total bile acid (TBA) synthesis, transporters, and FXR-FGF15 signaling regulation. Vitamin B2 attenuated fluoride-induced enterohepatic circulation disorder through IL-17A knockout and ileal microbiome regulation. The ileum was found to be the most sensitive to fluoride, leading to changes in ileal microbiome, particularly the reduction of Bifidobacterium. Furthermore, Bifidobacterium supplementation reversed fluoride-induced hepatointestinal injury. This study not only elucidates a novel mechanism by which fluoride causes hepatointestinal toxicity, but also provides a new physiological function of vitamin B2, which will be useful in the therapy of fluorosis and other hepatoenterological diseases.

Recurrence risks of cancer patient can change during treatment as a result of treatment-related tumor evolution. However, biomarkers that can monitor these changes are lacking. Here, we investigated whether tracking circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) dynamics through liquid biopsy can inform real-time recurrence risk. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) provides an ideal model where cell-free Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA (cfEBV DNA), a ctDNA, can be sensitively detected. We conducted the EP-SEASON study (NCT03855020) and prospectively recruited 1,000 NPC patients undergoing per-protocol cfEBV DNA assessments at 11 time points and receiving sequential chemo-radiotherapy. Longitudinal cfEBV DNA displayed distinct patterns during neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Despite the prognostic significance of cfEBV DNA at each time point, real-time recurrence risks changed in sync with cfEBV DNA dynamics. Furthermore, we identified phenotypes of whole-course ctDNA changing dynamics associated with different survival outcomes. In conclusion, tracking longitudinal on-treatment ctDNA can forecast real-time recurrence risk, facilitating risk-adapted, individualized patient management.

BACKGROUND: Anti-PD-1 therapy and chemotherapy is a recommended first-line treatment for recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma, but the role of PD-1 blockade remains unknown in patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. We assessed the addition of sintilimab, a PD-1 inhibitor, to standard chemoradiotherapy in this patient population. METHODS: This multicentre, open-label, parallel-group, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial was conducted at nine hospitals in China. Adults aged 18-65 years with newly diagnosed high-risk non-metastatic stage III-IVa locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (excluding T3-4N0 and T3N1) were eligible. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) using blocks of four to receive gemcitabine and cisplatin induction chemotherapy followed by concurrent cisplatin radiotherapy (standard therapy group) or standard therapy with 200 mg sintilimab intravenously once every 3 weeks for 12 cycles (comprising three induction, three concurrent, and six adjuvant cycles to radiotherapy; sintilimab group). The primary endpoint was event-free survival from randomisation to disease recurrence (locoregional or distant) or death from any cause in the intention-to-treat population. Secondary endpoints included adverse events. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03700476) and is now completed; follow-up is ongoing. FINDINGS: Between Dec 21, 2018, and March 31, 2020, 425 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to the sintilimab (n=210) or standard therapy groups (n=215). At median follow-up of 41·9 months (IQR 38·0-44·8; 389 alive at primary data cutoff [Feb 28, 2023] and 366 [94%] had at least 36 months of follow-up), event-free survival was higher in the sintilimab group compared with the standard therapy group (36-month rates 86% [95% CI 81-90] vs 76% [70-81]; stratified hazard ratio 0·59 [0·38-0·92]; p=0·019). Grade 3-4 adverse events occurred in 155 (74%) in the sintilimab group versus 140 (65%) in the standard therapy group, with the most common being stomatitis (68 [33%] vs 64 [30%]), leukopenia (54 [26%] vs 48 [22%]), and neutropenia (50 [24%] vs 46 [21%]). Two (1%) patients died in the sintilimab group (both considered to be immune-related) and one (<1%) in the standard therapy group. Grade 3-4 immune-related adverse events occurred in 20 (10%) patients in the sintilimab group. INTERPRETATION: Addition of sintilimab to chemoradiotherapy improved event-free survival, albeit with higher but manageable adverse events. Longer follow-up is necessary to determine whether this regimen can be considered as the standard of care for patients with high-risk locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Chiral superstructures with unique chiroptical properties that are not inherent in the individual units are essential in applications such as 3D displays, spintronic devices, biomedical sensors, and beyond. Generally, chiral superstructures are obtained by tedious procedures exploring various physical and chemical forces to break spatial symmetry during the self-assembly of discrete nanoparticles. In contrast, we herein present a simple and efficient approach to chiral superstructures by intercalating small chiral molecules into preformed achiral superstructures. As a model system, the chiral CdSe nanoplatelet (NPL) superlattice exhibits a giant and tunable optical activity with the highest g-factor reaching 3.09 × 10-2 to the excitonic transition of the NPL superlattice, nearly 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the corresponding separated chiral NPLs. The theoretical analysis reveals that the chiral deformation in the NPL superlattice induced by the chiral perturbation of the small chiral molecules is critical to the observed huge optical activity. We anticipate that this research lays a foundation for understanding and applying chiral inorganic nanosystems.

Transcription factors (TFs) engage in various cellular essential processes including differentiation, growth and migration. However, the master TF involved in distant metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains largely unclear. Here we show that KLF5 regulates actin remodeling to enhance NPC metastasis. We analyzed the msVIPER algorithm-generated transcriptional regulatory networks and identified KLF5 as a master TF of metastatic NPC linked to poor clinical outcomes. KLF5 regulates actin remodeling and lamellipodia formation to promote the metastasis of NPC cells in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, KLF5 preferentially occupies distal enhancer regions of ACTN4 to activate its transcription, whereby decoding the informative DNA sequences. ACTN4, extensively localized within actin cytoskeleton, facilitates dense and branched actin networks and lamellipodia formation at the cell leading edge, empowering cells to migrate faster. Collectively, our findings reveal that KLF5 controls robust transcription program of ACTN4 to modulate actin remodeling and augment cell motility which enhances NPC metastasis, and provide new potential biomarkers and therapeutic interventions for NPC.

Due to the high affinity with water molecules, amide compounds are easily contaminated by moisture; therefore, the water interference effect cannot be totally excluded from the amide-involved reactions. Thus, the perfect solution is to use the interference effect but not shield it in a real application. In this work, we introduced different contents of sodium acrylate (AAS) to scavenge water from the monomers of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) when copolymerized with TPA-Vinyl-4CN. Herein, water molecules play a role as nucleophilic reagents to attack highly active functional groups as -C=C-CN from TPA-Vinyl-4CN, leading to a blue emissive TPA-Vinyl-2CHO. From this study, we made a deep awareness of the interactions between three reaction partners of AAS and NIPAm as well as TPA-Vinyl-4CN. Our results clearly demonstrated the fact that water can be perfectly used and controlled by the water absorbent of AAS, developing a new approach to synthesizing multiple emission-coloured polymers by using only one luminogen of TPA-Vinyl-4CN.

The large-scale transmission and infection of pathogens worldwide have encouraged scientists to develop new antibacterial agents that do not succumb to bacterial resistance, which is not only of significant research interest but also challenging. In this work, we fabricated two main-chain (MC)-type cationic polymers (TPE-ammonium polymer and TPE-phosphonium polymer) through a one-step 100% atomic economic reaction. The two polymers demonstrated very promising antibacterial activity and their minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values are lower than that of most previously reported antibacterial agents. Especially, the phosphonium-doped MC polymer exhibited very small MICs of 0.24 and 0.98 µg mL-1 against S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. This excellent antibacterial performance by the TPE-phosphonium polymer is attributed to the advantages of the MC-type polymer such as its large molecular weight (Mn = 103 011) and stronger polarization effect from the P atom. More impressively, depending on the typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property and excellent antibacterial behaviors, the TPE-phosphonium polymer was successfully used for bacterial imaging and real-time monitoring of bacterial viability.

Gemcitabine plus cisplatin (GP) chemotherapy is the standard of care for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, the mechanisms underpinning its clinical activity are unclear. Here, using single-cell RNA sequencing and T cell and B cell receptor sequencing of matched, treatment-naive and post-GP chemotherapy NPC samples (n = 15 pairs), we show that GP chemotherapy activated an innate-like B cell (ILB)-dominant antitumor immune response. DNA fragments induced by chemotherapy activated the STING type-I-interferon-dependent pathway to increase major histocompatibility complex class I expression in cancer cells, and simultaneously induced ILB via Toll-like receptor 9 signaling. ILB further expanded follicular helper and helper type 1 T cells via the ICOSL-ICOS axis and subsequently enhanced cytotoxic T cells in tertiary lymphoid organ-like structures after chemotherapy that were deficient for germinal centers. ILB frequency was positively associated with overall and disease-free survival in a phase 3 trial of patients with NPC receiving GP chemotherapy ( NCT01872962 , n = 139). It also served as a predictor for favorable outcomes in patients with NPC treated with GP and immunotherapy combined treatment (n = 380). Collectively, our study provides a high-resolution map of the tumor immune microenvironment after GP chemotherapy and uncovers a role for B cell-centered antitumor immunity. We also identify and validate ILB as a potential biomarker for GP-based treatment in NPC, which could improve patient management.

Dysregulation of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) contributes to tumorigenesis by modulating specific cancer-related pathways, but the roles of N6-methyladenosine (m6A)-enriched lncRNAs and underlying mechanisms remain elusive in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Here, we reanalyzed the previous genome-wide analysis of lncRNA profiles in 18 pairs of NPC and normal tissues as well as in ten paired samples from NPC with or without post-treatment metastases. We discerned that an oncogenic m6A-enriched lncRNA, LINC00839, which was substantially upregulated in NPC and correlated with poor clinical prognosis, promoted NPC growth and metastasis both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, by using RNA pull-down assay combined with mass spectrometry, we found that LINC00839 interacted directly with the transcription factor, TATA-box binding protein associated factor (TAF15). Besides, chromatin immunoprecipitation and dual-luciferase report assays demonstrated that LINC00839 coordinated the recruitment of TAF15 to the promoter region of amine oxidase copper-containing 1 (AOC1), which encodes a secreted glycoprotein playing vital roles in various cancers, thereby activating AOC1 transcription in trans. In this study, potential effects of AOC1 in NPC progression were first proposed. Moreover, ectopic expression of AOC1 partially rescued the inhibitory effect of downregulation of LINC00839 in NPC. Furthermore, we showed that silencing vir-like m6A methyltransferase-associated (VIRMA) and insulin-like growth factor 2 mRNA-binding proteins 1 (IGF2BP1) attenuated the expression level and RNA stability of LINC00839 in an m6A-dependent manner. Taken together, our study unveils a novel oncogenic VIRMA/IGF2BP1-LINC00839-TAF15-AOC1 axis and highlights the significance and prognostic value of LINC00839 expression in NPC carcinogenesis.

OBJECTIVES: To address whether sparing the medial retropharyngeal lymph node (MRLN) region from elective irradiation volume provides non-inferior local relapse-free survival versus standard radiotherapy in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. DESIGN: Open-label, non-inferiority, multicentre, randomised, phase 3 trial. SETTING: Three Chinese hospitals between 20 November 2017 and 3 December 2018. PARTICIPANTS: Adults (18-65 years) with newly diagnosed, non-keratinising, non-distant metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma without MRLN involvement. INTERVENTIONS: Randomisation was done centrally by the Clinical Trials Centre at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center. Eligible patients were randomly assigned (1:1; block size of four) to receive MRLN sparing radiotherapy or standard radiotherapy (both medial and lateral retropharyngeal lymph node groups), and stratified by institution and treatment modality as follows: radiotherapy alone; concurrent chemoradiotherapy; induction chemotherapy plus radiotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Non-inferiority was met if the lower limit of the one sided 97.5% confidence interval of the absolute difference in three year local relapse-free survival (MRLN sparing radiotherapy minus standard radiotherapy) was greater than -8%. RESULTS: 568 patients were recruited: 285 in the MRLN sparing radiotherapy group; 283 in the standard radiotherapy group. Median follow-up was 42 months (interquartile range 39-45), intention-to-treat analysis showed that the three year local relapse-free survival of the MRLN sparing radiotherapy group was non-inferior to that of the standard radiotherapy group (95.3% v 95.5%, stratified hazard ratio 1.04 (95% confidence interval 0.51 to 2.12), P=0.95) with a difference of -0.2% ((one sided 97.5% confidence interval -3.6 to ∞), Pnon-inferiority<0.001). In the safety set (n=564), the sparing group had a lower incidence of grade ≥1 acute dysphagia (25.5% v 35.1%, P=0.01) and late dysphagia (24.0% v 34.3%, P=0.008). Patient reported outcomes at three years after MRLN sparing radiotherapy were better in multiple domains after adjusting for the baseline values: global health status (mean difference -5.6 (95% confidence interval -9.1 to -2.0), P=0.002), role functioning (-5.5 (-7.4 to -3.6), P<0.001), social functioning (-6.2 (-8.9 to -3.6), P<0.001), fatigue (7.9 (4.0 to 11.8), P<0.001), and swallowing (11.0 (8.4 to 13.6), P<0.001). The difference in swallowing scores reached clinical significance (>10 points difference). CONCLUSION: Compared with standard radiotherapy, MRLN sparing radiotherapy showed non-inferiority in terms of risk of local relapse with fewer radiation related toxicity and improved patient reported outcomes in patients with non-metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Highly fluorescent covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are rarely obtained because of the π-π stacked layers with aggregation-caused quenching behavior. Unarguably, highly fluorescent COFs with tunable emission colors are even more rarely achieved. Herein, a general strategy to modify the classical COF material (named COF-1) by different fluorescent molecules via N → B interaction was developed. In this method, the boron-containing COF-1 acted as a porous and crystalline matrix as well as a reaction partner of Lewis acid; after interacting with fluorescent molecules with the anchoring group of pyridine (Lewis base), COF-1 takes a gorgeous transfiguration from a non-emissive powder into a highly fluorescent COF material with tunable emission colors. This disclosed method endowed the typical COFs with new emissive life and is speculated with the general research concept for all boron-containing COFs. Benefiting from the prominent fluorescent emission in the aggregation state, sensitive probes toward amines are achieved.

Quantitative analysis of chiral molecules in various solvents is essential. However, there are still many challenges to enhancing the sensitivity in precisely determining both concentration and chirality. Here, we built an algorithmic methodology to predict and optimally design the chiroptical response of chiral plasmonic sensors for a specific target chiral analyte with the aid of deep learning. Based upon the analytic and intuitive understanding of the Born-Kuhn type plasmonic nanodimer, we designed and trained the neural networks that can successfully predict the chiroptical properties and further inversely design the plasmonic structure to achieve the intended circular dichroism. The developed algorithm could identify the optimum structure exhibiting the maximum sensitivity for the given specific analytes. Surprisingly, we discovered that sensitivity strongly depends on the various conditions of analytes and can be finely tuned with the structural parameters of plasmonic nanodimers. We envision that this study can provide a general platform to develop ultrasensitive chiral plasmonic sensors whose structure and sensitivity have been evolved algorithmically for adoption in specific applications.

RESUMEN

The molecular basis underlying nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains unclear. Recent progress in transcriptional regulatory network analysis helps identify the master regulator (MR) proteins that transcriptionally define malignant tumor phenotypes. Here, we investigated transcription factor-target interactions and identified TEA domain transcription factor 4 (TEAD4) as an MR of high-risk NPC. Precisely, TEAD4 promoted NPC migration, invasion and cisplatin resistance, depending on its autopalmitoylation. Mechanistically, YTHDF2 (YTH domain family 2) recognized WTAP (Wilms tumor 1-associating protein)-mediated TEAD4 m6A methylation to facilitate its stability and led to aberrant up-regulation of TEAD4. Up-regulated TEAD4 further drove NPC progression by transcriptionally activating BZW2 (basic leucine zipper and W2 domains 2) to induce the oncogenic AKT pathway. Moreover, the transcriptional activity of TEAD4 was independent of its canonical coactivators YAP/TAZ. Clinically, TEAD4 serves as an independent predictor of unfavorable prognosis and cisplatin response in NPC. Our data revealed the crucial role of TEAD4 in driving tumor malignancy, thus, may provide therapeutic vulnerability in NPC.

BACKGROUND: Programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) blockade therapies have demonstrated efficacy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Thyroid dysfunction is among the most common immune-related adverse events. This study aimed to explore the clinical pattern of thyroid dysfunction and its relationship with survival marker in nonmetastatic NPC after immunotherapy. METHODS: From January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021, 165 pairs of nonmetastatic NPC patients (165 with and 165 without anti-PD-1 immunotherapy) matched by the propensity score matching method were included in this study. Thyroid function was assessed retrospectively before the first treatment and during each immunotherapy cycle. RESULTS: The spectrum of thyroid dysfunction was different between the immunotherapy and control groups (P < 0.001). Compared with the control group, patients in the immunotherapy group developed more hypothyroidism (14.545% vs. 7.273%), less hyperthyroidism (10.909% vs. 23.636%), and a distinct pattern, biphasic thyroid dysfunction (3.030% vs. 0%). Immunotherapy also accelerates the onset of hypothyroidism, which was earlier with a median onset time difference of 32 days (P < 0.001). Patients who acquired thyroid dysfunction during immunotherapy had better complete biological response to treatment (OR, 10.980; P = 0.042). CONCLUSIONS: For nonmetastatic NPC, thyroid dysfunction was associated with better response to treatment in immunotherapy but not in routine treatment. Thyroid function could be used as a predictor for survival and should be under regular and intensive surveillance in clinical practice of anti-PD-1 immunotherapy for nonmetastatic NPC.

Materials with exceptional circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are important in multi-field applications such as 3D display, anti-counterfeiting, sensing, spin electronics, etc. Although CPL properties have been widely investigated ranging from the traditional chiral organic molecules to the emerging chiral inorganic nanomaterials and their assemblies, a trade-off between the luminescence efficiency (quantum yield, ϕ) and the luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum ) is always the bottleneck for all the chiral luminescent materials, which hinders their practical application. Herein, a new route to overcome the paradox through rationally assembling quantum nanorods and ultrathin inorganic nanowires into ordered multilayer structures is reported, achieving both high ϕ and glum . In these assembled structures, the aligned quantum nanorods emit linearly polarized light that is then transformed to CPL by the aligned ultrathin nanowire assemblies with precisely controlled phase retardation. This method is universal and readily extended to versatile 1D nanomaterials, paving the way for the practical applications of CPL active materials.

Oct4 is exclusively expressed in rodent inner cell mass (ICM) but silenced in its trophectoderm (TE). However, for many non-rodent animals, including pig, cattle, rabbit, goat, and human, OCT4 has a remarkable expression in early TE. This study, applying pig as the main research model, proves that OCT4 expression in TE is supported by a unique GATA motif in the OCT4 upstream conserved regulatory region, and GATA4 is responsible for its activation. Moreover, OCT4 acts as a specific regulator of a narrow range of genes (including BCL2A1 and HNRNP2AB1) that are essential for the first wave of rapid proliferation in early TE. This study describes the regulatory mechanism to direct the OCT4 expression and its significance in TE of porcine preimplantation embryo.

Three pyridinium derivatives bearing alkyl chains of different lengths (C1, C8, and C18) that show aggregation-enhanced emission were synthesized. These compounds can be used to detect ClO- ion as the reaction releases the fluorescent core with an increase in emission intensity and change in absorption wavelength. The lowest detection limit of TPA-Pyr-18C was 6.04 µM. The length of the alkyl chain and resulting lipophilicity allowed the targeting of different subcellular structures. TPA-Pyr-18C could be used for staining yolk lipids in zebrafish.

BACKGROUND: Significant intertumoral heterogeneity exists as antitumor treatment is introduced. Heterogeneous therapeutic responses are conventionally evaluated by imaging examinations based on Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST); nevertheless, there are increasing recognitions that they do not fully capture patient clinical benefits. Currently, there is a paucity of data regarding the clinical implication of biological responses assessed by liquid biopsy of on-treatment circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). Here, we investigated whether biological response evaluated by ctDNA kinetics added critical information to the RECIST, and whether integrating on-treatment biological response information refined risk stratification of cancer patients. METHODS: In this population-based cohort study, we included 821 patients with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated nasopharynx of head and neck cancer (NPC) receiving sequential neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and chemoradiotherapy (CRT), who had pretreatment and on-treatment cfEBV DNA and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) surveillance. Biological responses evaluated by cfEBV DNA were profiled and compared with conventional MRI-based RECIST evaluation. The inverse probability weighting (IPW)-adjusted survival analysis was performed for major survival endpoints. The Cox proportional hazard regression [CpH]-based model was developed to predict the on-treatment ctDNA-based individualized survival. RESULTS: Of 821 patients, 71.4% achieved complete biological response (cBR) upon NAC completion. RECIST-based response evaluations had 25.3% discordance with ctDNA-based evaluations. IPW-adjusted survival analysis revealed that cfEBV DNApost-NAC was a preferential prognosticator for all endpoints, especially for distant metastasis. In contrast, radiological response was more preferentially associated with locoregional recurrence. Intriguingly, cfEBV DNApost-NAC further stratified RECIST-responsive and non-responsive patients; RECIST-based non-responsive patients with cBR still derived substantial clinical benefits. Moreover, detectable cfEBV DNApost-NAC had 83.6% prediction sensitivity for detectable post-treatment ctDNA, which conferred early determination of treatment benefits. Finally, we established individualized risk prediction models and demonstrated that introducing on-treatment ctDNA significantly refined risk stratification. CONCLUSIONS: Our study helps advance the implementation of ctDNA-based testing in therapeutic response evaluation for a refined risk stratification. The dynamic and refined risk profiling would tailor future liquid biopsy-based risk-adapted personalized therapy.

Light traps have been widely used as effective tools to monitor multiple agricultural and forest insect pests simultaneously. However, the current detection methods of pests from light trapping images have several limitations, such as exhibiting extremely imbalanced class distribution, occlusion among multiple pest targets, and inter-species similarity. To address the problems, this study proposes an improved YOLOv3 model in combination with image enhancement to better detect crop pests in real agricultural environments. First, a dataset containing nine common maize pests is constructed after an image augmentation based on image cropping. Then, a linear transformation method is proposed to optimize the anchors generated by the k-means clustering algorithm, which can improve the matching accuracy between anchors and ground truths. In addition, two residual units are added to the second residual block of the original YOLOv3 network to obtain more information about the location of the underlying small targets, and one ResNet unit is used in the feature pyramid network structure to replace two DBL(Conv+BN+LeakyReLU) structures to enhance the reuse of pest features. Experiment results show that the mAP and mRecall of our proposed method are improved by 6.3% and 4.61%, respectively, compared with the original YOLOv3. The proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods (SSD, Faster-rcnn, and YOLOv4), indicating that the proposed method achieves the best detection performance, which can provide an effective model for the realization of intelligent monitoring of maize pests.
