RESUMEN

The forest soil methane (CH4) flux exhibits high spatiotemporal variability. Understanding these variations and their driving factors is crucial for accurately assessing the forest CH4 budget. In this study, we monitored the diurnal and seasonal variations in soil CH4 fluxes in two poplar (Populus spp.) plantations (Sihong and Dongtai) with different soil textures using the static chamber-based method. The results showed that the annual average soil CH4 flux in the Sihong and Dongtai poplar plantations was 4.27 ± 1.37 kg CH4-C ha-1 yr-1 and 1.92 ± 1.07 kg CH4-C ha-1 yr-1, respectively. Both plantations exhibited net CH4 emissions during the growing season, with only weak CH4 absorption (-0.01 to -0.007 mg m-2 h-1) during the non-growing season. Notably, there was a significant difference in soil CH4 flux between the clay loam of the Sihong poplar plantation and the sandy loam of the Dongtai poplar plantation. From August to December 2019 and from July to August and November 2020, the soil CH4 flux in the Sihong poplar plantation was significantly higher than in the Dongtai poplar plantation. Moreover, the soil CH4 flux significantly increased with rising soil temperature and soil water content. Diurnally, the soil CH4 flux followed a unimodal variation pattern at different growing stages of poplars, with peaks occurring at noon and in the afternoon. However, the soil CH4 flux did not exhibit a consistent seasonal pattern across different years, likely due to substantial variations in precipitation and soil water content. Overall, our study emphasizes the need for a comprehensive understanding of the spatiotemporal variations in forest soil CH4 flux with different soil textures. This understanding is vital for developing reasonable forest management strategies and reducing uncertainties in the global CH4 budget.

Purpose: Anxious depression (AD) is a common, distinct depression subtype. This exploratory subgroup analysis aimed to explore the effects of acupuncture as an add-on therapy of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for patients with AD or non-anxious depression (NAD). Patients and Methods: Four hundred and sixty-five patients with moderate-to-severe depression from the AcuSDep pragmatic trial were included in analysis. Patients were randomly assigned to receive MA+SSRIs, EA+SSRIs, or SSRIs alone (1:1:1) for six weeks. AD was defined by using dimensional criteria. The measurement instruments included 17-items Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Clinical Global Impression (CGI), Rating Scale for Side Effects (SERS), and WHO Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF). Comparison between AD and NAD subgroups and comparisons between groups within either AD or NAD subgroups were conducted. Results: Eighty percent of the patients met the criteria for AD. The AD subgroup had poorer clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes compared to those of the NAD subgroup. For AD patients, the HAMD response rate, remission rate, early onset rate, and the score changes on each scale at most measurement points on the two acupuncture groups were significantly better than the SSRIs group. For NAD patients, the HAMD early onset rates of the two acupuncture groups were significantly better than the SSRIs group. Conclusion: For AD subtype patients, either MA or EA add-on SSRIs showed comprehensive improvements, with small-to-medium effect sizes. For NAD subtype patients, both the add-on acupuncture could accelerate the response to SSRIs treatment. The study contributed to the existing literature by providing insights into the potential benefits of acupuncture in combination with SSRIs, especially for patients with AD subtypes. Due to its limited nature as a post hoc subgroup analysis, prospectively designed, high-quality trials are warranted. Clinical Trials Registration: ChiCTR-TRC-08000297.

Garlic is a common vegetable and spice in people's daily diets, in which garlic polysaccharide (GP) is one of the most important active components with a variety of benefits, such as antioxidant, immune-enhancing, anti-inflammatory, liver-protective and bowel-regulating properties. >20 types of GPs, mainly crude polysaccharides, have been identified. However, the exact chemical composition of GPs or the mechanism underlying their pharmacological activity is still not fully understood. The extraction and purification methods of GPs are compared in this review while providing detailed information on their structural features, identification methods, major biological activities, mechanisms of actions, structural modifications, structure-activity relationships as well as potential applications. Finally, the limitations of GP research and future issues that need to be addressed are discussed in this review. GPs are widely recognized as substances with great potential in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Therefore, this review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the latest research progresses in the field of GPs, together with scientific insights and a theoretical support for the development of GPs in research and industrialization.

OBJECTIVES: To observe the effect of acupuncture stimulation of "Yanglingquan"(GB34), "Zusanli"(ST36) and "Xuanzhong" (GB39) on arthritis index (AI), joint synovial membrane pathology, serum-related immunoinflammatory factors, and expressions of tumor suppressor gene mt-p53, nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) in knee joint synovial tissue of rats with type Ⅱ collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), so as to explore its possible mechanisms underlying improvement of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: Male SD rats were used in the present study. The CIA model was established by subcutaneous injection of collagen emulsion (200 µL/rat) in the tail root region on the first day and repeat (100 µL/rat) once on the 9th day. Eighteen successful CIA rats were randomized into model, medication and acupuncture groups, with 6 rats in each group. Other 6 normal rats were used as the normal control group. For rats of the medication group, leflunomide (1.9 mg/kg) was administrated by gavage, once a day, and for rats of the acupuncture group, manual acupuncture stimulation was applied to bilateral GB34, ST36, GB39 for 30 min, once a day, for 12 weeks. The arthritis index (AI) score (0-4 points) was evaluated once every week. The contents of IL-6, IL-17 and TNF-α in the serum were determined by ELISA. Histopathological changes of the ankle joint were observed by H.E. staining. The protein and mRNA expression levels of mt-p53, NF-κB p65, and PPARγ in the knee joint synovial tissue were determined by Western blot and quantitative real time PCR, separately. RESULTS: Compared with the normal control group, the AI scores at different time-points after modeling, contents of serum TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-17, expression levels of mt-p53, NF-κB p65, PPARγ proteins and mRNAs were significantly increased in the model group (P<0.01, P<0.05). In comparison with the model group, the AI scores at the 10th week in the medication group and at the 3rd, 9th and 10th week in the acupuncture group, contents of serum TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-17, and the expression levels of mt-p53 and NF-κB p65 proteins in both medication and acupuncture groups, as well as mt-p53 and NF-κB p65 mRNAs in the medication group were apparently decreased (P<0.01, P<0.05), while the expression levels of PPARγ protein in both medication and acupuncture group and PPARγ mRNA in the medication group were significantly up-regulated (P<0.05, P<0.01). No significant differences were found between the acupuncture and medication groups in down-regulating the AI score and serum TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-17 contents. The effect of acupuncture was weaker than that of medication in down-regulating the expression of mt-p53 and NF-κB p65 proteins and mRNAs and in up-regulating PPARγ mRNA (P<0.01). H.E. results showed ankle cartilage hyperplasia, reduced joint cavity, mild fibroproliferation and inflammatory cell infiltration in the surrounding soft tissue of the ankle joint in rats of the model group, which was milder in both medication and acupuncture groups. CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture stimulation can improve the degree of joint inflammation and swelling in CIA rats, which may be related to its effects in inhibiting the overexpression of immunoinflammatory factors in serum and regulating expression of mt-p53, NF-κB p65, PPARγ mRNAs and proteins in the synovial tissue.

A significant increase in reactive nitrogen (N) added to terrestrial ecosystems through agricultural fertilization or atmospheric deposition is considered to be one of the most widespread drivers of global change. Modifying biomass allocation is one primary strategy for maximizing plant growth rate, survival, and adaptability to various biotic and abiotic stresses. However, there is much uncertainty as to whether and how plant biomass allocation strategies change in response to increased N inputs in terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we synthesized 3516 paired observations of plant biomass and their components related to N additions across terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. Our meta-analysis reveals that N addition (ranging from 1.08 to 113.81 g m-2 year-1 ) increased terrestrial plant biomass by 55.6% on average. N addition has increased plant stem mass fraction, shoot mass fraction, and leaf mass fraction by 13.8%, 12.9%, and 13.4%, respectively, but with an associated decrease in plant reproductive mass (including flower and fruit biomass) fraction by 3.4%. We further documented a reduction in plant root-shoot ratio and root mass fraction by 27% (21.8%-32.1%) and 14.7% (11.6%-17.8%), respectively, in response to N addition. Meta-regression results showed that N addition effects on plant biomass were positively correlated with mean annual temperature, soil available phosphorus, soil total potassium, specific leaf area, and leaf area per plant. Nevertheless, they were negatively correlated with soil total N, leaf carbon/N ratio, leaf carbon and N content per leaf area, as well as the amount and duration of N addition. In summary, our meta-analysis suggests that N addition may alter terrestrial plant biomass allocation strategies, leading to more biomass being allocated to aboveground organs than belowground organs and growth versus reproductive trade-offs. At the global scale, leaf functional traits may dictate how plant species change their biomass allocation pattern in response to N addition.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease of chronic recurrence mediated by the interaction between IL-17 and keratinocytes, which sustains a vicious circle of inflammation. Safe and effective natural medicine is a potential strategy for the clinical treatment of psoriasis. Given its prominent anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory properties, we investigated the actions of allicin in improving psoriasis. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Pharmacodynamic studies were carried out in mice after topical administration of allicin against psoriasis-like lesions induced by imiquimod. Skin sensitization tests were evaluated on guinea pigs. Toxicological studies and skin irritation tests were assessed by consecutive topical allicin alone on the skin of rabbits. RNA-seq probed transcriptomic changes following allicin. Western blot explored the actions of allicin on the interaction between IL-17A and keratinocytes. Changes in inflammatory factor expression were analysed by qPCR and immunohistochemistry. KEY RESULTS: Allicin significantly improved the epidermal structure by inhibiting the excessive proliferation and reduced apoptosis of keratinocytes. Furthermore, allicin reduced the secretion of inflammatory cytokines (IL-17A/F, IL-22, IL-12, and IL-20), chemokines (CXCL2, CXCL5, and CCL20), and anti-bacterial peptides (S100a8/9). Mechanistically, allicin directly inhibited the IL-17-induced TRAF6/MAPK/NF-κB and STAT3/NF-κB signalling cascades in keratinocytes, thus breaking the positive inflammatory feedback and alleviating imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like dermatitis in mice. Importantly, topical administration of allicin did not cause skin allergy, and the safety and adaptability of long-term application were verified. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Interfering with IL-17 signalling in keratinocytes with allicin is a promising strategy for treating psoriasis, given its safety and effectiveness.

In forest ecosystems, the majority of methane (CH4) research focuses on soils, whereas tree stem CH4 flux and driving factors remain poorly understood. We measured the in situ stem CH4 flux using the static chamber-gas chromatography method at different heights in two poplar (Populus spp.) forests with separate soil textures. We evaluated the relationship between stem CH4 fluxes and environmental factors with linear mixed models and estimated the tree CH4 emission rate at the stand level. Our results showed that poplar stems were a net source of atmospheric CH4. The mean stem CH4 emission rates were 97.51 ± 6.21 µg·m-2·h-1 in Sihong and 67.04 ± 5.64 µg·m-2·h-1 in Dongtai. The stem CH4 emission rate in Sihong with clay loam soils was significantly higher (P < 0.001) than that in Dongtai with sandy loam soils. The stem CH4 emission rate also showed a seasonal variation, minimum in winter and maximum in summer. The stem CH4 emission rate generally decreased with increasing sampling height. Although the differences in CH4 emission rates between stem heights were significant in the annual averages, these differences were driven by differences observed in the summer. Stem CH4 emission rates were significantly and positively correlated with air temperature (P < 0.001), relative humidity (P < 0.001), soil water content (P < 0.001) and soil CH4 flux (P < 0.001). At these sites, the soil emitted CH4 to the atmosphere in summer (mainly from June to September) but absorbed CH4 from the atmosphere during the other season. At the stand level, tree CH4 emissions accounted for 2-35.4% of soil CH4 uptake. Overall, tree stem CH4 efflux could be an important component of the forest CH4 budget. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct more in situ monitoring of stem CH4 flux to accurately estimate the CH4 budget in the future.

Living trees in forests emit methane (CH4 ) from their stems. However, the magnitudes, patterns, drivers, origins, and biogeochemical pathways of these emissions remain poorly understood. We measured in situ CH4 fluxes in poplar stems and soils using static chambers and investigated the microbial communities of heartwood and sapwood by sequencing bacterial 16S, archaeal 16S, and fungal ITS rRNA genes. Methane emissions from poplar stems occurred throughout the sampling period. The mean CH4 emission rate was 2.7 mg m-2 stem d-1 . Stem CH4 emission rate increased significantly with air temperature, humidity, soil water content, and soil CH4 fluxes, but decreased with increasing sampling height. The CO2 reduction and methylotrophic methanogenesis were the major methanogenic pathways in wood tissues. The dominant methanogen groups detected in stem tissues were Methanobacterium, Methanobrevibacter, Rice Cluster I, Methanosarcina, Methanomassiliicoccus, Methanoculleus, and Methanomethylophilaceae. In addition, three methanotrophic genera were identified in the heartwood and sapwood - Methylocystis, Methylobacterium, and Paracoccus. Overall, stem CH4 emissions can originate directly from the internal tissues or co-occur from soils and stems. The co-existence of methanogens and methanotrophs within heartwood and sapwood highlights a need for future research in the microbial mechanisms underlying stem CH4 exchange with the atmosphere.

Soil O2 dynamics have significant influences on greenhouse gas emissions during soil management practice. In this study, we deployed O2-specific planar optodes to visualize spatiotemporal distribution of O2 in soils treated with biological soil disinfestation (BSD). This study aimed to reveal the role of anoxia development on emissions of N2O and CH4 from soil amended with crop residues during BSD period. The incorporation of crop residues includes wheat straw only, wheat straw with biochar and early straw incorporation. The anoxia in soil developed very fast within 3 days, while the O2 in headspace decreased much slower and it became anaerobic after 5 days, which was significantly affected by straw and biochar additions. The N2O emissions were positively correlated with soil hypoxic fraction. The CH4 emissions were not significant until the anoxia dominated in both soil and headspace. The co-application of biochar with straw delayed the anoxia development and extended the hypoxic area in soil, resulting in lower emissions of N2O and CH4. Those results highlight that the soil O2 dynamic was the key variable triggering the N2O and CH4 productions. Therefore, detailed information of soil O2 availability could be highly beneficial for optimizing the strategies of organic amendments incorporation in the BSD technique.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a leading cause of death amongst infectious diseases. The poor response to antitubercular agents necessitates the long-term use of high drug doses, resulting in low patient compliance, which is the main reason for chemotherapy failure and contributes to the development of multidrug-resistant TB. Patient non-compliance has been a major obstacle in the successful management of TB. The aim of this work was to develop and characterise rifapentine (RPT)-loaded PLGA-based nanoparticles (NPs) for reducing dosing frequency. METHODS: RPT-loaded PLGA and PLGA-PEG NPs were prepared using premix membrane homogenisation combined with solvent evaporation method. The resulting NPs were characterised in terms of physicochemical characteristics, toxicity, cellular uptake and antitubercular activity. NPs were further evaluated for pharmacokinetic and biodistribution studies in mice. RESULTS: The resulting NPs showed suitable and safe physicochemical characteristics and could be taken up by macrophages. RPT-loaded NPs were more effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis than free RPT. In vivo studies revealed that NPs could improve pharmacokinetic parameters, particularly for RPT/PLGA-PEG NPs. Moreover, both formulations had no toxicity to the organs of mice and could reduce hepatotoxicity. CONCLUSION: The application of PLGA-based NPs as sustained-release delivery vehicles for RPT could prolong drug release, modify pharmacokinetics, increase antitubercular activity and diminish toxicity, thereby allowing low dosage and frequency.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence supporting electroacupuncture (EA) for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), but its characteristics have not been well investigated. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness and characteristics of EA in MDD. METHODS: 60 subjects were enrolled-35 in the EA group and 25 in the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) group based on their preferences-in an 8-week non-randomised controlled clinical trial. The 24-item Hamilton depression rating scale (HAMD-24) and clinical global impression (CGI) were adopted for clinical assessment. The Columbia suicide severity rating scale and adverse event form were used to measure safety and tolerability. The characteristics of EA and SSRIs were compared by analysing seven factors of the HAMD-24. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of HAMD-24 response rate after intervention (P>0.05). Patients treated with EA demonstrated a significant reduction in CGI scores (P<0.05) with fewer adverse events compared with SSRIs (P<0.01). Although HAMD-24 factor analysis showed both EA and SSRIs could improve factor scores in cognitive impairment, diurnal variation, retardation, sleep disturbance, anxiety/somatisation and feelings of despair, EA showed greater improvement in anxiety/somatisation and feelings of despair than SSRIs (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There was no significant difference between EA and SSRIs in the treatment of MDD with respect to our primary outcome. However, as a potential therapy for MDD, EA appeared to result in greater symptom improvement than SSRI treatment with respect to anxiety/somatisation and feelings of despair. The results of this secondary analysis should be interpreted cautiously given the inherent issues of multiple testing.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the effects of acupuncture (manual acupuncture or electroacupuncture) combined with SSRIs for moderate to severe depression improving major clinical symptoms and life quality of the patients on secondary outcomes. DESIGN: Pragmatic, parallel, randomized controlled trial. SETTING: 6 hospitals in China. INTERVENTIONS: 6 weeks of manual acupuncture (MA)+selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), electroacupuncture (EA)+SSRIs, and SSRIs alone. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was response rate of 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17) total score at 6th week. The secondary outcomes reported in this analysis were HAMD-17 factor scores at 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 10th week and WHO Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) scores at 6th week. RESULTS: 477 patients were randomly assigned into MA + SSRIs (n = 161), EA + SSRIs (n = 160), or SSRIs alone (n = 156) groups. For HAMD-17 (at 6th week), the MA + SSRIs group was significantly better than the SSRIs alone group in retardation factor (p = 0.008), while the EA+SSRIs group was significantly better than the SSRIs alone group in anxiety/somatization factor (p<0.001) and sleep disturbance factor (p = 0.002). For WHOQOL-BREF (at 6th week), the EA + SSRIs group, compared with the SSRIs alone group, produced a more significant improvement in the overall quality of life, general health, physical health, and psychological health (p<0.05). While, the MA + SSRIs group, compared to the SSRIs alone group, showed significant advantage only in psychological health (p = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS: Either MA or EA combined SSRIs treatment could improve symptoms and quality of life for patients with moderate to severe depression. The main limitation of this trial was not using a sham control therefore the placebo effect could not be excluded.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are first-line antidepressants, however, only around 60% of patients could benefit from them. Acupuncture is supported by insufficient evidence to help with symptom relieving and SSRIs tolerance. This pragmatic randomized controlled trial compared SSRIs alone versus SSRIs together with manual acupuncture (MA) or electroacupuncture (EA) in moderate to severe depressed patients. Patients were randomly allocated to receive MA + SSRIs (161), EA + SSRIs (160), or SSRIs alone (156) for six weeks, and then followed up for another four weeks. The primary outcome was response rate of the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17) at 6th week. The secondary outcomes were HAMD-17 (remission rate, early onset rate, total score), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS: total score), Clinical Global Impression (CGI), Rating Scale for Side Effects (SERS: total and domain scores), number of patients with adjusted dosage of SSRIs and adverse events (AEs). Both MA + SSRIs and EA + SSRIs were significantly better than SSRIs at 6th week on HAMD-17 response rate (RR = 1.21, 95% CI 1.04, 1.42, P = 0.013; RR = 1.27, 95% CI 1.09, 1.48, P = 0.0014), HAMD-17 early onset rate (P < 0.0001), HAMD-17 and SDS total scores (P < 0.05), CGI (P < 0.01), SERS total score (P < 0.01), number of patients with increased dosage of SSRIs (P < 0.01). For HAMD-17 remission rate, EA + SSRIs was significantly higher than SSRIs (P = 0.0083), while MA + SSRIs showed no significant difference at 6th week (P = 0.092). No unintended acupuncture-related severe AE was observed. This study identified that both MA and EA showed beneficial effects in addition to SSRIs alone in patients with moderate to severe depression, and were well tolerated. OBJECTIVE: To observe the impacts of acupoint catgut embedding therapy on postpartum weight retention. METHODS: Seventy-one women of postpartum weight retention were divided into an observation group (35 cases) and a control group (36 cases) according to their own wishes when re-examination in 42 days after delivery. In the control group, the nutrition consultation was provided and the calories intake was controlled continuously for 20 weeks. In the observation group, on the basis of the treatment as the control group, the acupoint embedding therapy was applied to Zhongwan (CV 12), Zhongji (CV 3), Qihai (CV 6), Guanyuan (CV 4), Tianshu (ST 25), Guilai (ST 29), Shuifen (CV 9), Shousanli (LI 10), Zusanli (ST 36), Fenglong (ST 40) and Yinlingquan (SP 9). The sutures, No. 4-0 were cut as 2 to 4 mm in length and put into the embedding needle. After qi arrival, the sutures were pushed into the acupoints with the needle core and the needle was removed quickly. The treatment was given once every two weeks, continuously for 20 weeks. Totally, 10 times of acupoint catgut embedding therapy were required. Before and after treatment, the body mass, weight retention, body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat (PBF), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio (WHR) and health promoting lifestyle profile (HPLP-Ⅱ) were observed in the participants of the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment, body mass, weight retention, BMI, PBF, WC and WHR were all reduced as compared with those before treatment in the participants of the two groups, indicating the significant differences (all P<0.05). After treatment, the body mass, weight retention, BMI, PBF, WC and WHR in the participants of the observation group were lower than those in the control group, indicating the significant differences (all P<0.05). The score of every dimension of HPLP-Ⅱ after treatment was higher than that before treatment in the participants of the observation group, indicating the significant differences (all P<0.05); and the scores of health responsibility, sports and spiritual growth in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, indicating the significant differences (all P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The acupoint catgut embedding therapy improves in the postpartum weight retention and achieves the satisfactory clinical therapeutic effects.

Recently, the DAOA gene locus on chromosome 13q32-q34 has been implicated in the etiology of schizophrenia. We genotyped three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs: rs778294, rs779293 and rs3918342) in this region in 126 Chinese family trios. In this study, we have identified statistically significant transmission disequilibrium in two markers rs778293 (P=0.01) and rs3918342 (P=0.02), and a highly significant under-transmission between haplotype CAT (P=0.0005) and schizophrenia. The results provide further evidence to support that DAOA gene locus is involved in conferring susceptibility to schizophrenia.

A factorial combination pot experiment was designed to study the growth response and foraging behavior of three South China forestation species Pinus massoniana, Schima superba and Liriodendron chinense under heterogenous nutrient envionment and different light conditions. The results demonstrated that under full light, the plant height and biomass of P. massoniana and S. superba were enhanced in heterogenous nutrient environment, with the root biomass increased by 99.5% and 66.7%, respectively, compared with that in homogenous environment; while L. chinense exhibited singnificant growth benefits in homogenous environment. The root scale, foraging precision, and nutrient uptake of S. superba reduced markedly under shading, which in turn decreased the growth benefits in heterogenous nutrient environment. The influence of shading was weaker on P. massoniana than on S. superba, still with some growth benefits for P. massoniana due to its root proliferation and enhanced nutrient uptake in nutrient rich patch. There was a slight influence of shading on the foraging precision and sensitivity of L. chinense root, with no growth response pattern change to heterogenous nutient environment occurred. It was concluded that three tree species not only differed in the inheritance of root foraging mechanism and behavior, but also varied in the response pattern to light condition. Therefore, different measures should be adopted in forestation with the three tree species to enhance the forest productivity.
