RESUMEN

Early social-behavioral intervention that emphasizes social skill training is critical to addressing emotional and behavioral problems in early childhood. In this meta-analysis review, we examined all the social skills intervention studies for preschoolers with, or at risk of, emotional and behavioral problems using group designs. This review included 25 studies that met the inclusion criteria. The robust variance estimation method was used to calculate the overall effect size of all the included studies, as this method can count for the pre-existing difference between the experiment and control groups. The included studies yielded an overall effect of 0.54 from the 151 effect sizes that were obtained for the 3484 preschool participants. Curriculum, integration, and treatment fidelity were identified as significant moderators of effects.

Background: Studies of nonhuman primates with exposures of up to 100 days of cocaine self-administration (SA) have provided evidence that the central effects of cocaine progress over time. These durations of cocaine exposure, however, may be insufficient to capture the extent of the neurobiological alterations observed in cocaine users, many of whom use the drug for years. The goal of the present study was to determine whether 1.5 years of cocaine SA would result in further progression of alterations in functional brain activity. Methods: Adult male rhesus monkeys were exposed to 300 sessions of high-dose cocaine SA over 1.5 years. Following the final session rates of local cerebral glucose utilization (LCGU) were assessed with the 2-[14C]-deoxyglucose method and compared to rates of LCGU in control monkeys who responded for food reinforcement. In addition, LCGU in these animals was compared to a previously published group of monkeys that had self-administered cocaine or food for 100 sessions over a 4-5 month period. Results: Compared to 100 days of exposure, 300 days of cocaine SA further reduced LCGU in the post-commissural striatum and produced reductions in areas unaffected by the shorter duration of exposure, such as the hypothalamus, all of the amygdala, and large expanses of cortex. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate a clear progression of the impact of cocaine on functional activity with increasing durations of drug experience and have important implications for the development of potential strategies for the treatment of cocaine use disorder.

The proton is one of the main building blocks of all visible matter in the Universe1. Among its intrinsic properties are its electric charge, mass and spin2. These properties emerge from the complex dynamics of its fundamental constituents-quarks and gluons-described by the theory of quantum chromodynamics3-5. The electric charge and spin of protons, which are shared among the quarks, have been investigated previously using electron scattering2. An example is the highly precise measurement of the electric charge radius of the proton6. By contrast, little is known about the inner mass density of the proton, which is dominated by the energy carried by gluons. Gluons are hard to access using electron scattering because they do not carry an electromagnetic charge. Here we investigated the gravitational density of gluons using a small colour dipole, through the threshold photoproduction of the J/ψ particle. We determined the gluonic gravitational form factors of the proton7,8 from our measurement. We used a variety of models9-11 and determined, in all cases, a mass radius that is notably smaller than the electric charge radius. In some, but not all cases, depending on the model, the determined radius agrees well with first-principle predictions from lattice quantum chromodynamics12. This work paves the way for a deeper understanding of the salient role of gluons in providing gravitational mass to visible matter.

Introduction: The delivery of cell therapies may be an important frontier to treat different respiratory diseases in the near future. However, the cell size, delivery conditions, cell viability, and effect in the pulmonary function are critical factors. We performed a proof-of-concept experiment using ex vivo lungs and novel subglottic airway device that allows for selective lobar isolation and administration of drugs and biologics in liquid solution deep into the lung tissues, while simultaneously ventilating the rest of the lung lobes. Methods: We used radiolabeled cells and positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) imaging to demonstrate the feasibility of high-yield cell delivery to a specifically targeted lobe. This study proposes an alternative delivery method of live cells labeled with radioactive isotope into the lung parenchyma and tracks the cell delivery using PET-CT imaging. The technique combines selective lobar isolation and lobar infusion to carry large particles distal to the trachea, subtending bronchial segments and reaching alveoli in targeted regions. Results: The solution with cells and carrier achieved a complete and homogeneous lobar distribution. An increase in tissue density was shown on the computed tomography (CT) scan, and the PET-CT imaging demonstrated retention of the activity at central, peripheral lung parenchyma, and pleural surface. The increase in CT density and metabolic activity of the isotope was restricted to the desired lobe only without leak to other lobes. Conclusion: The selective lobe delivery is targeted and imaging-guided by bronchoscopy and CT to a specific diseased lobe during mechanical ventilation. The feasibility of high-yield cell delivery demonstrated in this study will lead to the development of potential novel therapies that contribute to lung health.

Previous studies in humans and in animals have shown dramatic effects of cocaine on measures of brain function that persist into abstinence. The purpose of this study was to examine the neurobiological consequences of abstinence from cocaine, using a model that removes the potential confound of cocaine cues. Adult male rhesus monkeys self-administered cocaine (0.3 mg/kg/injection; N = 8) during daily sessions or served as food-reinforcement controls (N = 4). Two times per week, monkeys were placed in a neutral environment and presented with a cartoon video for ~30 min, sometimes pre- and sometimes post-operant session, but no reinforcement was presented during the video. After ~100 sessions and when the cocaine groups had self-administered 900 mg/kg cocaine, the final experimental condition was a terminal 2-[14C]-deoxyglucose procedure, which occurred in the neutral (cartoon video) environment; for half of the monkeys in each group, this occurred after 1 day of abstinence and for the others after 30 days of abstinence. Rates of local cerebral glucose metabolism were measured in 57 brain regions. Global rates of cerebral metabolism were significantly lower in animals 1 day and 30 days post-cocaine self-administration when compared to those of food-reinforced controls. Effects were larger in 30- vs. 1-day cocaine abstinence, especially in prefrontal, parietal and cingulate cortex, as well as dorsal striatum and thalamus. Because these measures were obtained from monkeys while in a neutral environment, the deficits in glucose utilization can be attributed to the consequences of cocaine exposure and not to effects of conditioned stimuli associated with cocaine.

RESUMEN

This systematic review of reviews is the first to summarize peer tutoring outcomes for students with or at-risk for emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). Eleven narrative literature reviews, three systematic reviews, and two meta-analyses of peer tutoring interventions that met inclusion criteria were summarized. Participants across the 16 reviews included more than 2,404 students with or at-risk for EBD in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 across 73 individual, unduplicated studies. Findings support the efficacy of peer tutoring for students with or at-risk for EBD regarding academic and behavioral outcomes. Lessons learned, and implications for research and practice derived from these reviews are provided.

We report the first measurement of the parity-violating elastic electron scattering asymmetry on ^{27}Al. The ^{27}Al elastic asymmetry is A_{PV}=2.16±0.11(stat)±0.16(syst) ppm, and was measured at ⟨Q^{2}⟩=0.02357±0.00010 GeV^{2}, ⟨θ_{lab}⟩=7.61°±0.02°, and ⟨E_{lab}⟩=1.157 GeV with the Q_{weak} apparatus at Jefferson Lab. Predictions using a simple Born approximation as well as more sophisticated distorted-wave calculations are in good agreement with this result. From this asymmetry the ^{27}Al neutron radius R_{n}=2.89±0.12 fm was determined using a many-models correlation technique. The corresponding neutron skin thickness R_{n}-R_{p}=-0.04±0.12 fm is small, as expected for a light nucleus with a neutron excess of only 1. This result thus serves as a successful benchmark for electroweak determinations of neutron radii on heavier nuclei. A tree-level approach was used to extract the ^{27}Al weak radius R_{w}=3.00±0.15 fm, and the weak skin thickness R_{wk}-R_{ch}=-0.04±0.15 fm. The weak form factor at this Q^{2} is F_{wk}=0.39±0.04.

BACKGROUND: Canadian-born children of South Asian [SA] ethnicity develop inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] at similar rates to those among Caucasian children. We evaluated the variation in phenotypic spectrum of IBD in SA and Caucasian children in a national paediatric inception cohort of new-onset IBD. METHODS: Patients aged <17 years, enrolled in a Canadian nationwide inception cohort study, were included. Baseline demographic and IBD phenotypic features were compared between SA and Caucasian children. Longitudinal outcomes through 18 months of follow-up were compared matched by propensity scores. RESULTS: Of 1156 children enrolled over 2014 to 2019, 623 were Caucasian [98% and 88% parents Canadian born] and 114 SA [79% Canadian born, 87% parents SA born]. Fewer SAs have a first-degree relative with IBD, 6% vs 19% in Caucasians, p = 0.002. SAs present at a younger age, median age 11.4 years (interquartile range [IQR] 9.2-14.3) vs 13 years [IQR 10.9-15 years], p = 0.03 and more commonly with a UC/IBD-U [ulcerative colitis/IBD-unclassified] subtype [ratio of UC/IBD-U to CD 1.2:1 vs 1:1.8 for Caucasians, p <0.001]. Additionally, a greater proportion of SA CD patients present with colonic-only disease [colonic-only CD/UC/IBD-U in SAs 67% vs 57% for Caucasians, p = 0.001], and among those with CD, colonic CD in SAs 31% vs 23% in Caucasians, p = 0.20]. Perianal fistulising disease was also numerically more common in SAs (14 [27%] vs 64 [18%], p = 0.06]. Adjusting for differences in phenotypic presentation, anti-tumour necrosis factor [TNF] exposure, and time to initiation was similar, and two-thirds of children, whether anti-TNF exposed or naïve, were in corticosteroid-free clinical remission at 18 months irrespective of ethnicity. CONCLUSIONS: The phenotypic spectrum of new-onset IBD in SA children differs from that of Caucasian children, but treatment and clinical course are similar within phenotypic subgroups.

Hospital-acquired burn injuries can result in increased length of hospitalization, costs of stay, and potential for additional procedures. The aim of this study is to describe iatrogenic burn injuries over a 15-year period at an academic public hospital system. Data was collected from January 2004 to June 2019. Data included time of injury, hospital location, mechanism, level of harm caused, and anatomic location of the injury. Demographic information included patient age, gender, body mass index, payer status, primary admission diagnosis and length of stay. 122 patients were identified through an internal hospital database that tracked reported injuries. Incidence was highest between 2005-2012 (12.3 ± 4.1 per year) as compared to 2013-2019 (2.9 ± 2.1 per year). A majority (77%) resulted in harm caused to the patient. Most (41%) of the injuries occurred on the general medical floors, followed by the operating room (33.6%). The most common etiology was scald (23%), followed by electrocautery (14.8%). Five of the injuries resulted in burn consults, although none of these patients required surgery. Iatrogenic burns appear to be decreasing. While a majority were reported to have caused patient harm, none were serious enough to warrant surgery. Most injuries occurred on the medical floors with a scald mechanism. This review presents an opportunity to emphasize in-hospital burn prevention, as well as an opportunity for the burn team to affect change in concert with hospital administration.

Phenmetrazine (PHEN) is a putative treatment for cocaine and psychostimulant recidivism; however, neurochemical changes underlying its activity have not been fully elucidated. We sought to characterize brain homeostatic adaptations to chronic PHEN, specifically on functional brain activity (local cerebral glucose utilization), G-Protein Coupled Receptor-stimulated G-protein activation, and phosphorylation of ERK1/2Thr202/Tyr204, GSK3ßTyr216, and DARPP-32Thr34. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with sub-cutaneous minipumps delivering either saline (vehicle), acute (2-day) or chronic (14-day) low dose (25 mg/kg/day) or high dose (50 mg/kg/day) PHEN. Acute administration of high dose PHEN increased local cerebral glucose utilization measured by 2-[14C]-deoxyglucose uptake in basal ganglia and motor-related regions of the rat brain. However, chronically treated animals developed tolerance to these effects. To identify the neurochemical changes associated with PHEN's activity, we performed [35S]GTPγS binding assays on unfixed and immunohistochemistry on fixed coronal brain sections. Chronic PHEN treatment dose-dependently attenuated D2 dopamine and α2-adrenergic, but not 5-HT1A, receptor-mediated G-protein activation. Two distinct patterns of effects on pERK1/2 and pDARPP-32 were observed: 1) chronic low dose PHEN decreased pERK1/2, and also significantly increased pDARPP-32 levels in some regions; 2) acute and chronic PHEN increased pERK1/2, but chronic high dose PHEN treatment tended to decrease pDARPP-32. Chronic low dose, but not high dose, PHEN significantly reduced pGSK3ß levels in several regions. Our study provides definitive evidence that extended length PHEN dosage schedules elicit distinct modes of neuronal acclimatization in cellular signaling. These pharmacodynamic modifications should be considered in drug development for chronic use.
