RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Chronic neuropathic pain (NP) is commonly associated with cognitive and emotional impairments. Cannabidiol (CBD) presents a broad spectrum of action with a potential analgesic effect. This work investigates the CBD effect on comorbidity between chronic NP, depression, and memory impairment. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: The connection between the neocortex and the hippocampus was investigated with biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) deposits in the prelimbic cortex (PrL). Wistar rats were submitted to chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve and CA1 treatment with CBD (15, 30, 60 nmol). KEY RESULTS: BDA-labeled perikarya and terminal buttons were found in CA1 and dentate gyrus. CCI-induced mechanical and cold allodynia increased c-Fos protein expression in the PrL and CA1. The number of astrocytes in PrL and CA1 increased, and the number of neuroblasts decreased in CA1. Animals submitted to CCI procedure showed increasing depressive-like behaviors, such as memory impairment. CBD (60 nmol) treatment decreased mechanical and cold allodynia, attenuated depressive-associated behaviors, and improved memory performance. Cobalt chloride (CoCl2: 1 nM), WAY-100635 (0.37 nmol), and AM251 (100 nmol) intra-PrL reversed the effect of CA1 treatment with CBD (60 nmol) on nociceptive, cognitive, and depressive behaviors. CONCLUSION: CBD represents a promising therapeutic perspective in the pharmacological treatment of chronic NP and associated comorbidities such as depression and memory impairments. The CBD effects possibly recruit the CA1-PrL pathway, inducing neuroplasticity. CBD acute treatment into the CA1 produces functional and molecular morphological improvements.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The uniqueness of the way of life of rural riverside populations is of interest because they are the largest traditional Amazonian population. Their eating habits reveal their life conditions and relationship with the urban environment and is a poorly investigated subject. This research aimed to describe and analyze the food consumption of Amazonian riverside populations based on the food types consumed and reported by the families. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out on the rural riverside population occupying part of the riverbank of Rio Negro, in Manaus County, North Brazil. This population can only be accessed by river. Random, systematic, stratified sampling was conducted on 287 households. A questionnaire about consumed food, socioeconomic conditions and food obtainment was applied. The analysis was performed in R software. Descriptive statistical analysis and log-binomial regression were carried out. RESULTS: It was observed that eating habits were mainly based on in natura (unprocessed) or minimally processed foods, according to the food classification system NOVA. Food diversity was low and the most consumed food types were coffee, flour and rice. The influence of small local markets, income and traditional practices on food intake based on food processing level was also observed. Thus, the chances of eating fish in locations with a small grocery shop were lower (p=0.009) and of eating chicken were higher (p≤0.001). The chances of consuming in natura or minimally processed foods among the literate population (p=0.041) with higher income (p≤0.001) were higher. The chances of eating processed foods were lower where fishing (p=0.007) and farming (p=0.009) were practiced. CONCLUSION: Based on these unexpected results, the present research highlights the food consumption of a riverside population and reduces the shortage of information about the largest traditional Amazonian population.

RESUMEN

The current study aims to assess the effectiveness of e-learning in compliance with the new biosafety recommendations in dentistry in the context of COVID-19 applied to the clinical staff of a dental school in Brazil. A quasi-experimental epidemiological study was carried out by means of a structured, pre-tested online questionnaire, applied before and after an educational intervention, using an e-learning format. After data collection, statistical tests were performed. A total of 549 members of the clinical staff participated in the study in the two collection phases, with a return rate of 26.9%. After the e-learning stage, a reduction was found in the reported use of disposable gloves, protective goggles, and surgical masks. The course had no impact on the staff's knowledge concerning the proper sequence for donning PPE and showed 100% effectiveness regarding proper PPE doffing sequence. Knowledge about avoiding procedures that generate aerosols in the clinical setting was improved. Despite the low rate of return, it can be concluded that online intervention alone was ineffective in significantly improving learning about the new clinical biosafety guidelines. Therefore, the use of hybrid teaching and repetitive training is highly recommended.

RESUMEN

Depression has a high rate of comorbidity with neuropathic pain. This study aims to investigate the effect of Mygalin, an acylpolyamine synthesized from a natural molecule in the hemolymph of the Acanthoscurria gomesiana spider, injected into the prelimbic (PrL) region of the medial prefrontal cortex on chronic neuropathic pain and depression comorbidity in rats. To investigate that comorbidity, neuropathic pain was induced by chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve in male Wistar rats. The biotinylated biodextran amine (BDA) bidirectional neural tract tracer was microinjected into the PrL cortex to study brain connections. Rodents were further subjected to von Frey (mechanical allodynia), acetone (cold allodynia), and forced swim (depressive-like behavior) tests. BDA neural tract tracer-labeled perikarya were found in the dorsal columns of the periaqueductal gray matter (dPAG) and the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). Neuronal activity of DRN neurons decreased in CCI rats. However, PrL cortex treatment with Mygalin increased the number of spikes on DRN neurons. Mygalin treatment in the PrL cortex decreased both mechanical and cold allodynia and immobility behavior in CCI rats. PrL cortex treatment with N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor receptors attenuated the analgesic and antidepressive effects caused by Mygalin. The PrL cortex is connected with the dPAG and DRN, and Mygalin administration into the PrL increased the activity of DRN neurons. Mygalin in the PrL cortex produced antinociceptive and antidepressive-like effects, and the NMDA agonist reversed these effects.

RESUMEN

Hand-foot syndrome (HFS), or palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia, is characterised by erythema, oedema and dysesthesia, which can progress to blistering and ulceration. This condition is described as a common adverse effect of the chemotherapeutic agent capecitabine. The study set out to evaluate real-world incidences; assess severity based on clinical criteria, such as local symptoms, dyschromia, erythema, oedema and ulcerations; and associated factors, such as type of solid tumour, chemotherapy regimen, number of cycles, sex, age and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Scale of HFS, related to the use of capecitabine. This is a single-centre prospective cohort study carried out jointly by the departments of clinical oncology and dermatology of a university hospital in the southeast of Brazil. The study showed a 34% incidence of HFS, with most cases classified as mild. There was statistical significance in the correlation of the syndrome with sex and performance scores. HFS is the most common and limiting adverse reaction to capecitabine, and causes significant functional and quality impairments in patients with cancer. With this study, we have reinforced the importance of multidisciplinary assessment for early diagnosis and adequate follow-up.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Morphological reorganization in the neural networks of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) may be involved in the development of chronic neuropathic pain (NP). OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether inactivation and neurostimulation of the infralimbic division (IFL) of the mPFC alter electroacupuncture-induced analgesia (EIA) at 2 Hz and 2/100 Hz in animals with chronic NP. METHODS: Wistar rats were submitted to chronic constrictor injury of the ischiadicus nerve (CCI). Von Frey and acetone tests were performed to evaluate mechanical or cold allodynia. Animals were submitted to electroacupuncture (EA) at 2 Hz and 2/100 Hz for 20 min. After EA, the IFL cortex synaptic contacts were inactivated by cobalt chloride (200 nL of 1.0 mM CoCl2). Neurostimulation of the IFL cortex was also performed at 20 µA for 15 s, after EA, using a deep brain stimulation device. RESULTS: EA at 2 Hz and 2/100 Hz attenuated mechanical or cold allodynia in CCI rats. Microinjection of CoCl2 into the IFL division of the mPFC blocked the EA effect. EA at 2 Hz and 2/100 Hz, in association with neurostimulation of the IFL cortex, attenuated mechanical and thermal allodynia. CONCLUSION: EA induces antinociception in CCI rats. The analgesia was potentiated in association with neurostimulation in the IFL division of the mPFC.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate knowledge and attitudes towards biosafety recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic at a Brazilian dental school. Material and Methods A cross-sectional study was performed in 2020 with the clinical staff of a Brazilian dental school. The whole clinical staff was sent pre-tested self-administered online questionnaires about knowledge and attitudes towards the recommendations for biosafety in dental settings in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Descriptive statistical analyses were carried out for proportion calculation. Results Disposable head covering caps, isolation gowns, and gloves were the most frequently reported personal protective equipment (PPE). The rates ranged from 52.9% to 88.5% for N95 respirators, from 68.6% to 92.6% for face shields, from 47.4% to 67.5% for conventional eye protection shields, and 45.1% to 77.4% for eye protection with solid side shields. Chlorhexidine gluconate was the most frequent mouthwash indicated before clinical dental care. The percentage of agreement to provide clinical care to patients with suspected COVID-19 varied from 23.5% to 50.0%. The percentage of respondents who agreed that bioaerosol-generating procedures should be avoided was higher than 74.5%. Less than 50% knew the correct sequence for doffing of PPE. Conclusion This study revealed important gaps in knowledge and attitudes towards prevention and control measures against infection in dental environments in the context of COVID-19, indicating the need for improvements.

BACKGROUND: Motor cortex stimulation (MCS) is proper as a non-pharmacological therapy for patients with chronic and neuropathic pain (NP). AIMS: This work aims to investigate if the MCS in the primary motor cortex (M1) produces analgesia and how the MCS could interfere in the MCS-induced analgesia. Also, to elucidate if the persistent activation of N-methyl-d-aspartic acid receptor (NMDAr) in the periaqueductal grey matter (PAG) can contribute to central sensitisation of the NP. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were submitted to the von Frey test to evaluate the mechanical allodynia after 21 days of chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve. The MCS was performed with low-frequency (20 µA, 100 Hz) currents during 15 s by a deep brain stimulation (DBS) device. Moreover, the effect of M1-treatment with an NMDAr agonist (at 2, 4, and 8 nmol) was investigated in CCI rats. The PAG dorsomedial column (dmPAG) was pretreated with the NMDAr antagonist LY 235959 (at 8 nmol), followed by MCS. RESULTS: The MCS decreased the mechanical allodynia in rats with chronic NP. The M1-treatment with an NMDA agonist at 2 and 8 nmol reduced the mechanical allodynia in CCI rats. In addition, dmPAG-pretreatment with LY 235959 at 8 nmol attenuated the mechanical allodynia evoked by MCS. CONCLUSION: The M1 cortex glutamatergic system is involved in the modulation of chronic NP. The analgesic effect of MCS may depend on glutamate signaling recruitting NMDAr located on PAG neurons in rodents with chronic NP.

Histopatologicamente a AFF é indistinguível do líquen plano pilar.

The use of biological membranes in surgeries is a reality for years, and one of the most used is the bovine pericardium, so the purpose of this research is to describe the bovine pericardium's biomechanics by comparing two directions of a test, one parallel to the longitudinal heart axis and one perpendicular. 20 adult bovine pericardium were tested for the maximum rupture force and rupture elongation, collecting four samples of each pericardium direction. In phase 2, eight pericardia were conserved for 4 months in a 98% glycerine solution, and the solution in which they were submerged was microbiologically analysed monthly. The Mann-Whitney test was used; there was a very significant difference between the perpendicular and parallel groups (p = .0001). The T test showed no significant difference for the rupture elongation (p = .0938). In pericardium preserved in glycerine, the outliers were removed regarding the maximum rupture force, and a Boxcox transformation was performed (λ = 0.25). Outliers were removed for the rupture elongation, and Bartlett's test (p = .7836), and Cramer-Von Mises (p = .5033) were performed and then, the analysis of variance (p < .0001), followed by the Tukey test at 5%. In the microbiological analysis, there was no presence of microorganisms during conservation. The research has shown that the pericardium collection direction influences its resistance and it can be stored in glycerine for 4 months without losing biomechanical characteristics.

Introduction: Coronavirus 2019 disease (coronavirus disease 2019 - COVID-19) and social isolation guidelines promoted a drastic reduction of the demand for dermatological evaluation and surgeries, essential for early detection and prognosis of melanoma. Objective: To evaluate the reduced number of diagnoses and consultation of patients with melanoma resulting from COVID-19 between March 20 and June 30, 2019 and correlate with data collected between March 20 and June 30, 2020. Method: Retrospective, review study of medical charts of patients diagnosed with melanoma. It is a partial result obtained from a study that investigated the global impact of the pandemic in the dermatology outpatient clinic and residency. Results: In the period analyzed, a reduction of 94.1% of the consultation of patients with melanoma skin cancer was found. Neglecting melanoma during the pandemic can result in increased mortality and morbidity, in addition to higher healthcare costs. Conclusion: It is important that public and private services adjust to the restrictions in-force and considering the current scenario, efforts to facilitate the controlled access to the dermatologist must be made because it could avoid delays that can lead to worse prognosis

ABSTRACT Purpose To describe and relate the performance of receptive vocabulary in students with learning difficulties of different genders, educational levels, and socioeconomic levels. Methods Documentary study, approved by the Research Ethics Committee under number 1,012,635, with 46 records between 2017 and 2019, considering demographic data: gender, education, and socioeconomic level of the family. The medical records included were those with complete speech-language assessments. To check the family's socioeconomic level, the questionnaire from the Brazilian Association of Research Companies - ABEP was used, and for the receptive vocabulary skill, the Picture Vocabulary Test - TVfusp139o. In this test, the classification very low, low, medium, high and very high is used. For the classification criterion to be presented as the average, the score of correct answers by education is 2nd grade (105.8), 3rd grade (112.8) and 4th grade (117.4). Results Of the 46 participants in the sample, 31 (67.4%) were male and 15 (32.6%) female, with a predominance of students in the 4th year (34.80%) and socioeconomic class between levels B2 and D-E. In the vocabulary assessment, 28 (60%) of the 46 participants obtained an "average" classification. There was a correlation between education and receptive vocabulary performance (p = 0.008) and; between age and receptive vocabulary performance (p = 0.007). Conclusion Performance in receptive vocabulary advanced with age and education, but there was no influence on a socioeconomic level.

Pain is a personal and subjective experience that can only be felt by the sufferer. Acute pain is intended to warn the individual that something is wrong. However, chronic pain (CP) is a global health problem, affecting the quality of life and making the individual parts or disabled. Basic research uses several animal models for the study of acute or chronic pain, as well as for the study of the main comorbidities arising from their chronicity, such as anxiety and depression. This review focuses on the animal models most commonly used in this context.

RESUMEN

Neuropathic pain (NP) is a challenge due to our limited understanding of the mechanisms that initiate and maintain chronic pain. The prelimbic division (PrL) of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is an important area of the emotional and cognitive components of pain and pharmacological systems can interact into the neocortex to elaborate the chronic pain. This work aimed to investigate the pharmacological cross-talk between synaptic neurotransmission, neuroanatomical approaches and NP conditions. A bidirectional neural tract tracer, the 3000-molecular-weight biodextran (BDA) was microinjected into the PrL cortex. The mechanical withdrawal threshold (MWT) was recorded by a von Frey test, and the effect of prelimbic cortex CB1, NMDA, and TRPV1 receptor modulation was evaluated 21 days after chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve in male Wistar rats. Microinjection of a bidirectional neurotracer in the PrL cortex showed connections with the lateral division of the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus (MDL), central division of the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus (MDC), centrolateral thalamic nucleus (CL), ventromedial thalamic nucleus (VM), and the paracentral thalamic nucleus (PC). In detail, AM251, a CB1 receptor antagonist (at 50, 100 and 200 pmol) microinjections intra-PrL cortex decreased the MWT. Administrations of 6-iodonordihydrocapsaicin (6-I-CPS), a transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) antagonist, at 3 nmol and the endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA) at 50 and 100 pmol increased the MWT. AEA at 200 pmol injected in the PrL cortex decreased the MWT, and this hyperalgesic effect was blocked by 6-I-CPS at 3 nmol. The AEA (at 100 pmol) anti-allodynic effect was attenuated by AM251 (at 5 pmol). The TRPV1 selective agonist N-oleoyldopamine (OLDA) at 10 µM decreased the MWT. The blockade of the NMDA receptor with LY235959 (at 8 nmol) and 6-I-CPS (at 3 nmol) reversed the OLDA (at 10 µM) hyperalgesic effect. These findings showed that the PrL cortex sends pathways to thalamic nuclei that can mediate the nociception. We also suggest that the PrL cortex is involved in the potentiation and maintenance of mechanical allodynia by NMDA and TRPV1 receptor activation and that attenuation of this allodynia depends on CB1 receptor activation during NP.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Purpose: to verify the influence of bilingualism on the development of phonological awareness. Methods: this is an integrative literature review, built on the hypothesis of the relationship between bilingualism and its influence on the development of phonological skills in children. The construction was carried out in the databases: CAPES, Pubmed, Scielo, Eric, and LILACS, using the following free terms in Portuguese and English: bilingualism AND phonology, bilingualism AND phonological awareness and bilingualism AND phonological skills. The sample selection criteria were: a) scientific papers published in national and international journals with full text, free and available in the database; b) in English and Portuguese; c) that addressed the theme in the last five years. For the selection of the papers, reading the title, followed by the summary, and finally, reading the papers potentially relevant for review were considered. Results: following the eligibility criteria, 2,578 papers were identified. Of these, 87 were selected for complete analysis. The final sample consisted of eight papers, two of them being written by Brazilian authors. Of these, five showed better phonological awareness skills in bilinguals and two in monolinguals. Studies point out that age can be a predictor of language skills and better phonological awareness skills associated with good reading development. Bilinguals, early exposed to this skill, develop reading by phonology and those with late exposition, by semantics. Conclusion: the present study demonstrated that there are still controversies regarding the impacts of bilingualism on phonological awareness, including on the benefits of phonological awareness.
