BACKGROUND: Infantile hemangioma is one of the most common benign soft tissue tumors in infants. The pathogenesis of infantile hemangioma remains unclear and twin studies regarding its incidence may help clarify disease pathogenesis. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics of infantile hemangioma in twin patients and discuss its clinical incidence. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 83 pairs of twins with infantile hemangioma admitted to the Guangdong Provincial Women and Children Hospital and Henan Provincial People's Hospital between May 2016 and May 2022. Thirty-one pairs of twins among whom both developed infantile hemangioma and 52 pairs of twins among whom only one twin was affected were included. Analysis was performed using the Spearman correlation. Additionally, we analyzed the influence of factors such as sex, twin zygosity, preterm birth, birth weight, and assisted reproduction on the clinical characteristics of twins. RESULTS: We observed that disease occurrence in both twins correlated with assisted reproduction (χ2 = 13. 102, P < 0.05) and preterm birth (χ2 = 36.523, P < 0.05). Twin zygosity (χ2 = 0.716, P > 0.05) and total birth weight of twins (t=-3.369, P > 0.05) were not correlated with infantile hemangioma. However, among twins, the ones with lesser birth weight were more likely to develop infantile hemangioma. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical characteristics of infantile hemangioma in twins were consistent with their epidemiological characteristics. Female sex, preterm birth, less birth weight, and assisted reproduction increased the probability of morbidity in both twins. Analysis of the characteristics of infantile hemangioma in twins may assist further research and clinical treatment.

Nonaqueous Li-O2 battery (LOB) represents one of the promising next-gen energy storage solutions owing to its ultrahigh energy density but suffers from problems such as high charging overpotential, slow redox kinetics, Li anode corrosion, etc., calling for a systemic optimization of the battery configuration and structural components. Herein, an ingenious "trinity" design of LOB is initiated by implementing a hollowed cobalt metal organic framework (MOF) impregnating iodized polypyrrole simultaneously as the cathode catalyst, anode protection layer, and slow-release capsule of redox mediators, so as to systemically address issues of impeded mass transport and redox kinetics on the cathode, dendrite growth, and surface corrosion on the anode, as well as limited intermediate solubility in the low donor-number (DN) solvent. As a result of the systemic effort, the LOB constructed demonstrates an ultralow discharge/charge polarization of 0.2 V, prolonged cycle life of 1244 h and total discharge capacity of 28.41 mAh cm-2 . Mechanistic investigations attribute the superb LOB performance to the redox-mediated solution growth mechanism of crystalline Li2 O2 with both enhanced reaction kinetics and reversibility. This study offers a paradigm in designing smart materials to raise the performance bar of Li-O2 battery toward realistic applications.

As the promising next-generation energy storage solution, lithium metal battery (LMB) has gained great attention but still suffers from troubles associated with the highly active metallic lithium. Herein, it is aimed to develop an anode-free LMB engaging no Li disk or foil by modifying the Cu current collector with mercapto metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) impregnating Ag nanoparticles (NPs). While the polar mercapto groups facilitate and guide Li+ transport, the highly lithiophilic Ag NPs help to enhance the electric conductivity and lower the energy barrier of Li nucleation. Furthermore, the MOF pores allow compartmentalizing bulk Li into a 3D matrix Li storage so that not only the local current density is reduced, but also is the plating/stripping reversibility greatly enhanced. As a result, full cells pairing the prelithiated Ag@Zr-DMBD/Cu anodes with LiFePO4 cathodes demonstrate a high initial specific capacity of 159.8 mAh g-1 , first-cycle Coulombic efficiency of 96.6%, and long-term cycling stability over 1000 cycles with 99.3% capacity retention at 1 C. This study underlines the multi-aspect functionalization of MOFs to impart lithiophilicity, polarity, and porosity to achieve reversible Li plating/stripping and paves the way for realizing high-performance anode-free LMBs through exquisite modification of the Cu current collector.

Owing to their structural tunability for furnishing high catalytic activity and photoactivity, perovskite oxides are a class of promising materials for high-performance photocathode catalysts in a photoassisted lithium oxygen battery (LOB), which is still in its infancy. Herein, single-crystalline LaCoO3 (LCO) is successfully synthesized through a microwave-assisted approach and selenylated to simultaneously introduce anionic doping and oxygen vacancies, boosting not only the electrocatalytic activity toward reversible Li2O2 formation/decomposition, but also the photoactivity to further reduce the charge/discharge polarization. As a result, LOBs utilizing Se-doped LCO as the photocathode catalyst demonstrate a superior performance under illumination in all aspects of energy efficiency, specific capacity, and cycling stability, ranking among the best reported in the literature for perovskite oxides. The photoenhanced charge kinetics is found to be correlated with the accelerated Li2O2 nucleation with lowered granule size, which is key to both the improved charge/discharge capacity and reversibility. The results underscore the tailoring of perovskite structure to aggrandize both the catalytic activity and photoactivity for concertedly promoting the kinetics of LOBs.

Radiological therapy/examination is the primary source of artificial radiation exposure in humans. While its application has contributed to major advances in disease diagnosis and treatment, ionizing radiation exposure is associated with ovarian damage. The use of natural products, either alone or as an adjunct, has become increasingly common for reducing the side effects of radiological therapy during disease treatment. Herein, we explored the protective effect of folic acid (FA), a widely used B vitamin, against radiation-induced ovarian injury and its mechanism of action. Female mice with normal ovarian function were randomly divided into control, FA, radiation, and radiation + FA groups. The intervention strategy included daily intragastric administration of FA (5 mg/kg) for 3 weeks prior to radiation exposure. Mice in the radiation and radiation + FA groups received a single dose of 5 Gy X-ray irradiation. Changes in the estrous cycle were then recorded, and ovarian tissues were collected. Pathophysiological changes as well as reproductive and endocrine-related indexes were determined via H&E staining, immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and ELISA. The reproductive performance and emotional symptoms of animals were also monitored. Our results indicated that FA intervention effectively alleviated ovarian damage, leading to more regular estrous cycles, lesser impairment of follicular morphology and endocrine status, as well as greater germ cell preservation. Reduced levels of oxidative stress, inflammation, and enhanced DNA repair were associated these changes. FA pre-administration improved the reproductive performance, leading to higher pregnancy rates and greater litter sizes. Further, the anxiety levels of animals were significantly reduced. Our results indicate that FA pre-administration significantly alleviates radiation-induced ovarian damage in rodents, highlighting its potential as a protective strategy against radiation exposure in the female population.

Retroperitoneal ectopic pregnancy (REP) is an extremely rare type of ectopic pregnancy. Currently, surgery is the most widely used treatment method although it involves a high likelihood of intraoperative hemorrhage. In this case report, we describe a safe and effective alternative method for managing epigastric REP. We conducted a retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 2 patients with REP in the epigastrium who were treated at our hospital using our nonsurgical method. The treatment involved conservative management by computed tomographic-guided methotrexate injection in the gestational sac. We also present a literature review of 26 case reports and discuss the clinical features and various methods for treating REP. Our experience with the successful treatment of 2 patients suggests that the novel approach of computed tomographic-guided methotrexate injection in the gestational sac may be a safe and effective approach to manage REP. Further studies are warranted to confirm our findings.
