RESUMEN

Directly capturing atmospheric CO2 and converting it into valuable fuel through photothermal synergy is an effective way to mitigate the greenhouse effect. This study developed a gas-solid interface photothermal catalytic system for atmospheric CO2 reduction, utilizing the innovative photothermal catalyst (Cu porphyrin) CuTCPP/MXene/TiO2. The catalyst demonstrated a photothermal catalytic performance of 124 µmol·g-1·h-1 for CO and 106 µmol·g-1·h-1 for CH4, significantly outperforming individual components. Density functional theory (DFT) results indicate that the enhanced catalytic performance is attributed to the internal electric field between the components, which significantly enhances carrier utilization. The introduction of CuTCPP reduces free energy of the photothermal catalytic reaction. Additionally, the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect and high-speed electron transfer properties of MXene further boost the catalytic reaction rate. This well-designed catalyst and catalytic system offer a simple method for capturing atmospheric CO2 and converting it in-situ through photothermal catalysis.

In recent years, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with long persistent luminescence (LPL) have inspired extensive attention and presented various applications in security systems, information anticounterfeiting, and biological imaging fields. However, obtaining LPL materials with ultralong lifetime remains challenging. Halogen atoms, as nonmetallic elements existing in the frameworks, can not only induce the heavy-atom effect, effectively enhancing spin-orbit coupling and promoting intersystem crossing (ISC) processes, but also suppress non-radiative transition of the triplet states through the intra- and intermolecular interactions. Specifically, fluorine atoms with the strongest electronegativity may form intermolecular aggregate interlockings through halogen-bonding interactions that restrict molecular motions and vibrations, thereby improving phosphorescent lifetime. With the aforementioned considerations, two distinct types of MOFs with/without fluorine atoms (namely, Ca-MOF and 5FCa-MOF) were synthesized. Notably, by introducing fluorine atoms into MOFs, fluorine-induced intermolecular aggregate interlockings effectively enhanced the phosphorescent lifetime of 5FCa-MOF exceeding 264 ms compared to that of Ca-MOF (103.94 ms). Remarkably, both MOFs displayed bright LPL to the naked eye after removal of the irradiation source, especially 5FCa-MOF which can last for about 2 s. By introducing fluorine atoms, 5FCa-MOF exhibits greatly enhanced ISC with a rate constant up to 4.1 × 106 s-1 and suppressed non-radiative decay down to 3.73 s-1, thereby extending the LPL time. The thus obtained LPL provides potential in information encryption, security systems, optical anticounterfeiting, and so on.

When treating femoral fractures with closed reduction intramedullary nail fixation, excessive residual displacement of the fracture end can affect the fixation effect and prolong the healing time, which is difficult to manage intraoperatively. This article introduces a simple steel wire cerclage fixation technique, which is percutaneous and can control the incision within 1 cm without excessive reliance on specially designed surgical instruments. It is suitable for the reduction and fixation of oblique femoral metaphysis fractures and butterfly-shaped femoral shaft fracture blocks.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to delineate the salivary metabolomic profile of patients with idiopathic xerostomia using untargeted metabolomics techniques, with the goal of addressing the lack of clear diagnostic markers and providing insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms of the condition. DESIGN: In this observational, cross-sectional study, saliva samples from 33 patients with idiopathic xerostomia and 34 healthy controls were analyzed using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography Quadrupole Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF MS). Metabolomic profiling was complemented by multivariate statistical analysis to differentiate between affected individuals and controls. RESULTS: Metabolomic analysis delineated a pronounced differentiation between patients with idiopathic xerostomia and healthy controls. A total of 195 metabolites displayed significant differential expression, each with a variable importance in projection (VIP) greater than 1 and a P-value less than 0.05. Pathway enrichment analysis, according to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), identified 22 metabolites that participated in 18 distinct metabolic pathways. Among these, the caffeine metabolism pathway, characterized by notable alterations in impact values (VIP, P-value, Log2-fold change, Rich factor), emerged as the most significantly disrupted, underscoring its potential role in the pathophysiology of idiopathic xerostomia (P = 0.0000395). CONCLUSIONS: The salivary metabolomic profiling revealed distinct alterations in idiopathic xerostomia, with a significant reduction in caffeine metabolism pathways, underscoring potential neuropathic involvement. This study advances our understanding of the metabolic alterations in xerostomia, suggesting that salivary metabolomics may offer viable biomarkers for diagnosing and understanding the etiology of idiopathic xerostomia. Future research should focus on therapeutic targeting of these metabolic disturbances and evaluating their reversibility with treatment.

Heavy metal pollution from informal e-waste recycling may adversely affect child growth. However, the potential toxic mechanisms from a population perspective remain unknown. Herein, 18 hair heavy metals, urinary metabolomics, and three child growth indices [i.e., weight-for-age Z-score (WAZ), height-for-age Z-score (HAZ), and BMI Z-score (BMIZ)] were measured in children from e-waste recycling (ER, N = 426) and control areas (CR, N = 247). We examined longitudinal changes in heavy metal exposure and child growth after e-waste control to further elucidate causal relationships. Results showed that children in regulated ER site were still exposed to higher levels of several heavy metals and experienced poorer growth compared to those in control areas. Elevated exposure to heavy metals like tin, antimony, lead, cadmium, and cobalt correlated with poor child growth, particularly affecting girls and younger children. Tin, rather than traditionally concerning heavy metals, exhibited the most crucial role in driving the adverse effects of metal mixtures on child growth. Reducing heavy metal exposure through e-waste control could notably improve child growth, confirming the causal relationship between heavy metal exposure and poor child growth and underscoring the health benefits of e-waste regulation. Our research identified the roles of steroid biosynthesis, folate biosynthesis, amino acid metabolism, and purine metabolism in mediating the effects of metal exposure on child growth. Testosterone glucuronide, riboflavin, folic acid, xanthosine, and xanthine emerged as key mediators, potentially serving as metabolic signatures of heavy metal exposure. These findings illuminate the toxic mechanisms underlying poor child growth resulted from heavy metal exposure, offering important insights from a population-based perspective. In addition to lead and cadmium, monitoring and regulating tin and antimony are crucial to mitigate their negative impact on child growth in e-waste recycling areas.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) provide an opportunity to elucidate the catalytic mechanism of complex reactions in heterogeneous catalysis. The low-temperature water-gas shift (WGS) reaction is an important industrial technology to obtain high purity hydrogen. Herein, we study the catalytic activity of Pt1@Ti3C2T2 (T = O, S) SACs, where one subsurface Ti atom with three T vacancies in the functionalized Ti3C2T2 (T = O, S) MXene is substituted by one Pt atom, for the low-temperature WGS reaction, using density functional theory (DFT). The results show that Pt1@Ti3C2T2 provides an excellent platform for the WGS reaction by its bowl-shaped vacancy derived from the Pt1 single atom and three T defects surrounding it. Especially, Pt1@Ti3C2S2 SAC has higher catalytic performance for the WGS reaction, due to the weaker electronegativity of the S atom than the O atom, which significantly reduces the energy barrier of H* migration in the WGS reaction, which is often the rate-determining step. In the most favorable redox mechanism of the WGS reaction on Pt1@Ti3C2S2, the rate-determining step is the dissociation of OH* into O* and H* with the energy barrier as low as 1.12 eV. These results demonstrate that Pt1@Ti3C2S2 is promising in the application of MXenes for low-temperature WGS reactions.

BACKGROUND: The burden of common urologic diseases, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), urinary tract infections (UTI), urolithiasis, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, and prostate cancer, varies both geographically and within specific regions. It is essential to conduct a comprehensive and precise assessment of the global burden of urologic diseases. METHODS: We obtained data on incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for the aforementioned urologic diseases by age, sex, location, and year from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021. We analyzed the burden associated with urologic diseases based on socio-demographic index (SDI) and attributable risk factors. The trends in burden over time were assessed using estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC) along with a 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: In 2021, BPH and UTI were the leading causes of age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), with rates of 5531.88 and 2782.59 per 100,000 persons, respectively. Prostate cancer was the leading cause of both age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR), with rates of 12.63 and 217.83 per 100,000 persons, respectively. From 1990 to 2021, there was an upward trend in ASIR, ASPR, ASMR, and ASDR for UTI, while urolithiasis showed a downward trend. The middle and low-middle SDI quintile levels exhibited higher incidence, prevalence, mortality, and DALYs related to UTI, urolithiasis, and BPH, while the high and high-middle SDI quintile levels showed higher rates for the three cancers. The burden of these six urologic diseases displayed diverse age and sex distribution patterns. In 2021, a high body mass index (BMI) contributed to 20.07% of kidney cancer deaths worldwide, while smoking accounted for 26.48% of bladder cancer deaths and 3.00% of prostate cancer deaths. CONCLUSIONS: The global burden of 6 urologic diseases presents a significant public health challenge. Urgent international collaboration is essential to advance the improvement of urologic disease management, encompassing the development of effective diagnostic screening tools and the implementation of high-quality prevention and treatment strategies.

OBJECTIVES: The type of atlantodental space tissue in patients with atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) can help doctors understand the possibility of reduction before surgery. However, relevant research on this topic is lacking. In this study, we aimed to summarise the atlantodental space classification of patients with AAD using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and explore their clinical characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preoperative 3T cervical MR images of patients who underwent posterior reduction and fixation surgery for non-traumatic AAD between 1 September 2012 and 31 July 2023 were collected. Two radiologists read and recorded the MRI results based on the standard protocol. The kappa value was used to evaluate intra- and inter-observer agreements. The patient's age, sex, body mass index, clinical symptoms, Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, and visual analogue scale information were obtained from medical records. RESULTS: A total of 135 patients with AAD (mean age, 51.3 ± 14.0 years, 52 men) were included in the analysis. The inter-observer agreement between the two readers was 0.818 (P < 0.0001). The intra-observer consistencies were 0.882 (P < 0.0001) and 0.896 (P < 0.0001). Patients with inflexible tissue signs exhibit more irreducible in hyperextension position, and their range of motion of ADI is smaller. These patients were older and had a higher incidence of abnormal spinal cord signals and JOA scores. CONCLUSIONS: Novel MRI signs exhibited high inter- and intra-observer consistency and were associated with patient age, abnormal spinal cord signals, reducibility, range of motion of ADI, and symptoms.

Hypertension is prevalent in e-waste recycling areas, and elevated blood pressure in children significantly increases the risk of hypertension in adulthood. However, the associations and toxic pathways between chronic exposure to metal(loids) and elevated blood pressure are rarely investigated. In this study, we measured the levels of 29 hair metal(loids) (chronic exposure biomarkers) and blood pressure in 667 susceptible children from an e-waste recycling area to explore their relationships. Paired urine metabolomics analysis was also performed to interpret potential mechanistic pathways. Results showed that the hypertension prevalence in our recruited children (13.0 %) exceeded the average rate (9.5 %) for Chinese children aged 6-17 years. The top five abundant metal(loids), including lead, strontium, barium, and zinc, demonstrated the most profound associations with elevated systolic blood pressure. Quantile g-computation, weighted quantile sum, and Bayesian kernel machine regression analysis jointly demonstrated a significant association between chronic exposure to metal(loids) mixture and systolic blood pressure. Interestingly, selenium showed significant antagonistic interactions with these four metals, suggesting that supplementing selenium may help children resist the elevated blood pressure induced by metal(loids) exposure. Increased metal(loids) and blood pressure levels were significantly linked to changes in urine metabolomics. Structural equation model indicated that androsterone glucuronide and N-Acetyl-1-aspartylglutamic acid were the significant mediators of the associations between metal(loids) and blood pressure, with mediation effects of 77.4 % and 29.0 %, respectively, suggesting that androsterone glucuronide and N-Acetyl-1-aspartylglutamic acid may be involved in the development of metal-induced blood pressure elevating effect. Girls were more vulnerable to metal(loids)-induced hormonal imbalance, especially androsterone glucuronide, than boys. Chronic exposure to metal(loids) at e-waste recycling sites may contribute to elevated blood pressure in children through disrupting various metabolism pathways, particularly hormonal balance. Our study provides new insights into potential mechanistic pathways of metal(loids)-induced changes in children's blood pressure.

Underwater shock wave technology can realize dynamic rock fracture, which is helpful to increase oil and gas reservoir permeability. It can realize the efficient exploitation of medium and low maturity oil and gas resources. In practical application, the shock wave parameters require not only high intensity but also safety and controllability. To meet these requirements, insensitive composite energetic materials driven by electrical wire explosion plasma were proposed, which is one of the most promising methods. However, when in use, the load assembly process containing wires and energetic materials is complex. In this paper, a new type of energetic material load is proposed, using non-penetrating wire to drive composite energetic material. It can simplify the production process of the energetic load and produce acceptable shock wave parameters. The test results show that both the energy deposition of the wire and the shock wave intensity decrease under a non-penetrating wire structure. However, the shock wave intensity is still higher than that of the underwater electrical wire explosion. Based on schlieren diagnosis, it is found that the composite energetic material is gradually driven, and the energy release is not concentrated. In addition, the "non-wire" structure driving condition was discussed in contrast. Under this condition, the process of ionization channel establishment in composite energetic materials is random. The shock wave intensity is weak because the composite energetic material is in the process of slow detonation.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are severe complications of pregnancy with high morbidity and are a major cause of increased maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. Currently, there is a lack of effective early diagnostic indicators and safe and effective preventive strategies for HDP in clinical practice, except for monitoring maternal blood pressure levels, the degree of proteinuria, organ involvement and fetal conditions. The intestinal microbiota consists of the gut flora and intestinal environment, which is the largest microecosystem of the human body and participates in material and energy metabolism, gene expression regulation, immunity regulation, and other functions. During pregnancy, due to changes in hormone levels and altered immune function, the intestinal microecological balance is affected, triggering HDP. A dysregulated intestinal microenvironment influences the composition and distribution of the gut flora and changes the intestinal barrier, driving beneficial or harmful bacterial metabolites and inflammatory responses to participate in the development of HDP and promote its malignant development. When the gut flora is dysbiotic and affects blood pressure, supplementation with probiotics and dietary fiber can be used to intervene. In this review, the interaction between the intestinal microbiota and HDP was investigated to explore the feasibility of the gut flora as a novel biomarker of HDP and to provide a new strategy and basis for the prevention and treatment of clinical HDP.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a chronic multifactorial inflammatory disease which eventually lead to tooth loss (TL). Therefore, a retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the status of tooth survival within 11 years after non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) and to analyze the risk factors especially crown-root ratio (CRR) that affected TL in Chinese with advanced periodontitis. METHODS: 3481 teeth of 131 subjects who underwent NSPT were examined retrospectively within a mean follow-up period of 11.6 years. The association of risk factors including clinical and radiographic parameters with TL was assessed using univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. Smooth curve fitting and segmented regression model were conducted to show the nonlinear relationship and the threshold effect between CRR and the risk of TL. RESULTS: 347 teeth were lost in 97 patients in this study. Male, diabetes mellitus, heavy-smoker, molar, probing depth (PD), attachment loss (AL), bleeding on probing (BOP), tooth mobility, and radiographic bone loss were significantly associated with tooth loss (P < 0.05). A nonlinear relationship between CRR and the risk of TL was found, with different turning point values between molars and non-molars (1.9 vs. 2.76). CONCLUSIONS: The findings based on practice-based clinical and radiographic data do suggest a nonlinear relationship between CRR and the survival of teeth, and provide evidence to help clinicians to determine the prognosis of teeth for patients with advanced periodontitis. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Based on clinical and radiographic data, this study provides an individualized basis for clinicians to judge the dental prognosis of patients with advanced periodontitis according to the different tooth sites.

Tunable luminescence-assisted information storage and encryption holds increasing significance in today's society. A promising approach to incorporating the benefits of both organic long persistent luminescent (LPL) materials and rare-earth (RE) luminescence lies in utilizing organic host materials to sensitize RE luminescence, as well as employing Förster resonance energy transfer from hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) phosphorescence to RE compound luminescence. This work introduces a one-pot, in situ pyrolytic condensation method, achieved through high-temperature melting calcination, to synthesize lanthanide ion-doped HOF materials. This method circumvents the drawback of molecular triplet energy annihilation, enabling the creation of organic LPL materials with RE characteristics. The HOF material serves as the host, exhibiting blue phosphorescence and cyan LPL. By fine-tuning the doping amount, the composite material U-Tb-100 achieves green LPL with a luminescent quantum yield of 56.4 %, and an LPL duration of approximately 2-3 s, demonstrating tunable persistence. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, spectral analysis, and theoretical calculation unveil that U-Tb-100 exhibits exceptional quantum yield and long-lived luminescence primarily due to the efficient sensitization of U monomer to RE ions and the PRET process between U and RE complexes. This ingenious strategy not only expands the repertoire of HOF materials but also facilitates the design of multifunctional LPL materials.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term outcomes of subtotal hemispherotomy (SH) in treating drug-resistant epilepsy caused by unilateral hemispheric lesions and try to give the prognostic factors for these outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of 19 patients who underwent SH in Sanbo Brain Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China, from May 2008 to April 2021. All clinical data and factors related to surgical and functional outcomes, including motor, neuropsychiatric, and language function, were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: The surgical outcomes showed 13 (68 %) patients were seizure-free at the last follow-up (2-14 years, mean: 5.6±2.9). No changes were found in motor outcomes in 12 (63 %) patients; seven (37 %) patients had new permanent motor deficits (NPMD). Improvement in the full-scale intelligence quotient (FIQ) (p = 0.009) was observed. Univariate analysis found that patients who did not achieve seizure freedom had a significantly older age at surgery (p = 0.017) and acute post-operative seizures (APOS) (p = 0.046). Kaplan-Meier analysis also identified significant differences in seizure outcomes between the children and adult subgroups (p = 0.0017). Multivariate Cox analysis showed that older age at surgery (HR=1.055, p = 0.034) was associated with shorter time-to-seizure-recurrence. Resection of the central operculum and insula (OR= 80.433, p =0.031) and higher monthly seizure frequency (OR= 1.073, p = 0.040) were also poor prognostic factors for motor function outcomes. CONCLUSION: SH is an effective treatment procedure in treating patients with drug-resistant epilepsy caused by hemispheric lesions with satisfied seizure outcomes, limited impairment of motor function, and preserving neuropsychiatric outcomes.

Pharyngitis can be caused by various pathogens, including viruses and bacteria. Group A streptococcus (GAS) is the most common bacterial cause of pharyngitis. However, distinguishing GAS pharyngitis from other types of upper respiratory tract infections is challenging in clinical settings. This often leads to empirical treatments and, consequently, the overuse of antimicrobial drugs. With the advancement of antimicrobial drug management and healthcare payment reform initiatives in China, reducing unnecessary testing and prescriptions of antimicrobial drugs is imperative. To promote standardized diagnosis and treatment of GAS pharyngitis, this article reviews various international guidelines on the clinical diagnosis and differential diagnosis of GAS pharyngitis, particularly focusing on clinical scoring systems guiding laboratory testing and antimicrobial treatment decisions for GAS pharyngitis and their application recommendations, providing a reference for domestic researchers and clinical practitioners.

OBJECTIVE: To observe and analyse patients with dental implant fracture and explore the factors influencing the fracture with the aim of providing reference for physicians' clinical work. METHODS: The clinical data of 19 patients with dental implant fracture who visited the Department of Implantology of our hospital between 2007 and 2019 were retrospectively observed and analysed, and the fracture's influencing factors (e.g. the fracted implant site, implant diameter and connection mode, upper prosthetic method and fracture site) were analysed and investigated. RESULTS: The fractured implants comprised 12 Straumann implants (5 fractured at the smooth dental neck and 7 atop the central screws), 5 Bego implants (4 fractured at the smooth dental neck and 1 atop the central screw), 3 Lifecore implants fractured atop the central screws and 1 Anthogyr implant fractured atop the central screw. Of the 19 patients, 6 had anterior dental implant fracture, and 13 had posterior dental implant fracture (21 fractured implants in total). Maxillary anterior dental implant fracture was observed in 6 patients (8 implants), maxillary posterior implant fracture was observed in 3 patients (3 implants), and mandibular posterior dental implant fracture was observed in 10 patients (10 implants). CONCLUSIONS: A good implant system design, appropriate implant diameter and reasonable upper prosthetic method are key to maintaining long-term stability of a dental implant.

In plants, cytochrome P450s are monooxygenase that play key roles in the synthesis and degradation of intracellular substances. In tobacco, the majority of studies examining the P450 superfamily have concentrated on the CYP82E subfamily, where multiple family members function as demethylases, facilitating the synthesis of nornicotine. In this study, NtCYP82C4, a tobacco P450 superfamily member, was identified from a gene-edited tobacco mutant that nicotine biosynthesis in tobacco leaves is evidently reduced. Compared to the wild-type plants, the knockout of NtCYP82C4 resulted in a significantly lower nicotine content and biomass in tobacco leaves. Transcriptome and metabolome analyses indicated that the knockout of NtCYP82C4 inhibites secondary metabolic processes in tobacco plants, leading to the accumulation of some important precursors in the nicotine synthesis process, including aspartic acid and nicotinic acid, and increases nitrogen partitioning associated with those processes such as amino acid synthesis and utilization. It is speculated that NtCYP82C4 may function as an important catalase downstream of the nicotine synthesis. Currently, most of the steps and enzymes involved in the nicotine biosynthesis process in tobacco have been elucidated. Here, our study deepens the current understanding of nicotine biosynthesis process and provides new enzyme targets for nicotine synthesis in tobacco plants.

A six-cyclic crown ether-type pillar[5]arene was synthesized, and the five ethylene oxide loops were located outside the cavity and not affected by temperature changes which was confirmed by variable-temperature NMR experiment in DMSO-d6 and CDCl3 and 2D 1H-1H NOESY experiment in CDCl3. The six-cyclic pillar[5]-crown also showed greater binding ability of host-guest with bis(pyridinium) derivatives than conventional alkoxy pillar[5]arenes that illustrated through 1H NMR titration spectroscopic experiment in acetone-d6/CDCl3 (1 : 1) and UV-vis titration experiments in CHCl3 at room temperature. The five benzocrown ethers at the periphery were able to bind metal cations by 1H NMR titration spectroscopic experiment in CD2Cl2/methanol-d4(9 : 1).

AIM: To develop a nomogram-based predictive model of tooth survival by comprehensively analysing clinical and radiographic risk factors of tooth loss (TL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 3447 teeth of 131 subjects who underwent non-surgical periodontal treatment were examined retrospectively within a mean follow-up period of 11.6 years. The association of risk factors including clinical and radiographic parameters with TL was assessed using univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. A nomogram-based predictive model was developed, and its validation and discriminatory ability were analysed. RESULTS: In all, 313 teeth were lost in 94 patients in this study (overall tooth loss [OTL] 9.08%; 0.21 teeth/patient/year). Male, heavy smoking, molar teeth, probing depth (PD), attachment loss (AL), tooth mobility and radiographic bone loss were significantly associated with TL (p < .05). A gradient effect of tooth mobility on TL increased from degree I to III versus none (p < .0001). The area under the curve (AUC) of the model was 0.865. Calibration curve and decision curve analysis demonstrated good performance and high net benefit, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Adopting a specific nomogram could facilitate the prediction of tooth survival and the development of tailored treatment plans in Chinese patients with advanced periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical and genetic characteristics of a case of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). METHODS: We collected the clinical data on a case of PCD treated in the Department of Reproductive Medicine of Linyi People's Hospital in July 2020, detected the genes of the patient by whole-exome sequencing (WES), verified the candidate mutations by Sanger sequencing, and predicted the protein structure of the mutant gene by SWISS-MODEL. RESULTS: The proband was found with the clinical phenotypes of chronic rhinitis, bronchiectasis, visceral transposition and male infertility. WES revealed a homozygous frameshift variation of c.12890dup (p.N4297Kfs*13) in exon 74 of the DNAH5 gene, which led to the premature termination of polypeptide chain synthesis and affected the gene function. SWISS-MODEL prediction showed that some of the amino acid residues were deleted after mutation, resulting in a 3D conformational change of the protein. This variation was not recorded in the ClinVar, gnomAD and OMIM databases and, according to the relevant guidelines of the American College of Genetics and Genomics, was classified as a pathogenic variation (PVS1+PM2_P+PM3_P). CONCLUSION: The homozygous variation of the DNAH5 gene c.12890dup (p.N4297Kfs*13) may be the cause of the clinical phenotype of this case of PCD, and the above findings have enriched the variation spectrum of the DNAH5 gene.
