Background and Objectives: Dementia is increasing worldwide. This study aimed to examine the impact of comorbidity burden and frailty on dementia prognosis in patients with dementia. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted with 47 patients with dementia who were followed for up to two years. The Modified Charlson Comorbidity Index (MCCI), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-E), and Edmonton Fragility Scale were used besides laboratory and clinical findings. Results: The mean age of the 47 patients was 78.77 ± 12.44 years. During the follow-up period, MMSE-E scores were observed to improve in 50% of the patients. Initial MMSE-E scores were found to be lowest in men and patients with coronary artery disease or depression, while final MMSE-E scores were observed to be lowest in patients with depression and low vitamin B12 or vitamin D levels. The rates of decrease in MMSE-E scores in non-, moderately and severely frail patients were 21.4%, 55.6%, and 70.6%, respectively. There was a moderate negative correlation between MMSE-E scores and both comorbidity burden and frailty scores. The mediation analysis revealed that frailty was a complete mediator, and that comorbidity burden led to an increase in frailty and a decrease in MMSE-E scores. During the follow-up period, patients with moderate frailty, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, alcohol and tobacco use, low B12 levels, or hypothyroidism showed an increased risk of decrease in cognitive functions. Conclusions: There was a significant association between dementia prognosis and both frailty and biological deficits. We recommend the adoption of a syndemic approach in the follow-up of dementia, as we believe that the prevention of frailty and associated biological deficits will contribute to slowing dementia's clinical course.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity has been associated with chronic low-grade systemic inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) with anthropometric measurements, dietary content and physical activity level in children. DESIGN: A matched group study. PATIENTS: This study was conducted with 91 children aged 6-17 years, divided into two groups: "non-obese group" (Body Mass Index Standard Deviation Score [BMI SDS] <95th percentile) and "obese group" (BMI SDS ≥95th percentile). MEASUREMENTS: Plasma PTX-3 levels. RESULTS: The mean age of 91 children included in the study was 12.34 ± 2.86 years. Plasma PTX-3 levels were significantly higher in obese children (p = .028). No significant correlation was found between BMI SDS and plasma PTX-3 values, but a weak positive correlation was found when physical activity level was controlled (r = .176, p = .049). In addition, it was found that fat mass was a partial mediator of plasma PTX-3 level, and an increase in the amount of subcutaneous adipose tissue negatively affected plasma PTX-3 level. Plasma PTX-3 level showed a weak positive correlation (r = .223, p = .017) with physical activity score and dietary polyunsaturated fatty acid intake, while a weak negative correlation with neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio. One unit increase in physical activity score or polyunsaturated fatty acid level caused 0.730 and 2.061 unit increases in plasma PTX-3 level, respectively; while one unit increase in dietary fat intake caused 0.413-unit decrease. CONCLUSION: There was an indirect relationship between the amount of subcutaneous adipose tissue and PTX-3 level. The results of our study suggested that plasma PTX-3 was associated with lower levels of inflammation in children.

(1) Background: The introduction of novel therapies has led to a considerable evolution in the management of Multiple Myeloma, and chromosomal abnormalities predict the success of treatment. We aimed to characterize cytogenetic abnormalities for risk stratification in the patient population and to evaluate the predictive and prognostic value of the specified abnormalities in distinct treatment modalities. (2) Methods: This study included patients with Multiple Myeloma who applied to the Internal Medicine Clinic of the Cukurova University Faculty of Medicine. Between 2010 and 2023, 98 cases with cytogenetic abnormality data were identified. We analysed the effects of cytogenetic abnormalities on survival and response rates to first chemotherapies. (3) Results: P53 del was the most prevalent abnormality, and t(11;14) was the most common translocation. There was no significant difference in the mean survival and treatment response rates for specific cytogenetic abnormalities. When chemotherapies based on lenalidomide were initiated, patients' life-death statuses differed significantly from those of treatments without lenalidomide. Regardless of the type of chromosomal aberration, lenalidomide-based treatments independently enhanced average survival 14-fold, while there was no significant difference in overall survival among treatments. (4) Conclusions: In individuals with cytogenetic abnormalities, lenalidomide-based treatments should be started regardless of the chemotherapy to be used for the condition.

Background: The purposes of neoadjuvant chemotherapy are to tumor size to improve the tumor removal rate, extend survival, and prevent metastasis. In this study, the importance of CRP/albumin ratio and CEA/albumin ratio in the prediction of neoadjuvant treatment response in gastric cancer patients was evaluated. Methods: This study retrospectively included 135 gastric cancer patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy at Çukurova University Balcali Hospital between January 2018 and December 2023. Preoperative CRP/albumin and CEA/albumin ratios were compared according to treatment response and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the potential importance of these ratios in predicting pathological response. Results: The mean age of the 135 patients was 58.79 ± 10.83 (min = 26-max = 78). The CRP/albumin and CEA/albumin ratios were found to be significantly lower in patients who did not respond to neoadjuvant therapy. Each 1-unit increase in the CRP/albumin ratio was associated with a 1.16-fold decrease in the odds of pathological complete response to neoadjuvant therapy. Both CRP/albumin and CEA/albumin ratios were found to be significant in distinguishing neoadjuvant therapy response. The optimal cut-off value was 2.74 for the CRP/albumin ratio (sensitivity = 60%, specificity = 78.4%) and 1.40 for the CEA/albumin ratio (sensitivity = 74.2%, specificity = 67.6%). Values below these cut-off points favored neoadjuvant therapy response. Pathological complete response to neoadjuvant therapy was 4.75 times higher in patients with a CRP/albumin ratio below 2.74 and 5.14 times higher in patients with a CEA/albumin ratio below 1.40. Conclusions: Findings demonstrate that in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer receiving neoadjuvant treatment, CRP/Albumin and CEA/Albumin ratios are significant markers of pathological response.

Background: Several studies have shown that the risk of mortality due to COVID-19 is high in patients with COPD. However, evidence on factors predicting mortality is limited. Research Question: Are there any useful markers to predict mortality in COVID-19 patients with COPD?. Study Design and Methods: A total of 689 patients were included in this study from the COPET study, a national multicenter observational study investigating COPD phenotypes consisting of patients who were followed up with a spirometry-confirmed COPD diagnosis. Patients were also retrospectively examined in terms of COVID-19 and their outcomes. Results: Among the study patients, 105 were diagnosed with PCR-positive COVID-19, and 19 of them died. Body mass index (p= 0.01) and ADO (age, dyspnoea, airflow obstruction) index (p= 0.01) were higher, whereas predicted FEV1 (p< 0.001) and eosinophil count (p= 0.003) were lower in patients who died of COVID-19. Each 0.755 unit increase in the ADO index increased the risk of death by 2.12 times, and each 0.007 unit increase in the eosinophil count decreased the risk of death by 1.007 times. The optimum cut-off ADO score of 3.5 was diagnostic with 94% sensitivity and 40% specificity in predicting mortality. Interpretation: Our study suggested that the ADO index recorded in the stable period in patients with COPD makes a modest contribution to the prediction of mortality due to COVID-19. Further studies are needed to validate the use of the ADO index in estimating mortality in both COVID-19 and other viral respiratory infections in patients with COPD.

Disasters can lead to decreased functionality in medical practice. This study aimed to quantitatively measure presenteeism and to determine the role of coping strategies among disaster-victim doctors living in a city affected by the 2023-Turkey earthquakes. This cross-sectional study included 220 doctors reached through social media groups using the convenience sampling method. A weak negative relationship was found between presenteeism and positive re-evaluation, one of the coping strategies with earthquake stress. A weak negative correlation was found between the Positive Reappraisal sub-dimension score of the Coping with Earthquake Stress Scale (CESS) and presenteeism (r = -0.299, p < 0.001). In the linear regression analysis, the sub-dimensions that contributed significantly to the model were found to be the Positive Reappraisal sub-dimensions of CESS, whose increase resulted in a decrease in presenteeism and Seeking Social Support sub-dimension, whose increase caused an increase in presenteeism. Presenteeism was higher in those who lost their loved ones, had damage in their workplace/home, and thought they were helpless or in danger. Both material and emotional factors decreased functionality at work after an earthquake. We recommend developing material and psychological support strategies to reduce presenteeism in post-disaster periods.

The adverse effects of chemotherapy are more apparent in elderly patients and lead to worse prognosis and mortality. Identifying immunonutritional risk factors is of great importance in terms of treatment effectiveness, prognosis, and mortality in geriatric oncology. The modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS) is an immunonutritional index based on serum CRP and albumin levels. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of mGPS in predicting prognosis and survival in elderly patients with gastric cancer receiving perioperative FLOT treatment. We retrospectively enrolled 71 patients aged over 65 years and grouped them according to their pretreatment mGPS score. Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analysis showed overall survival was significantly worse in the mGPS 1 and mGPS 2 groups than in the mGPS 0 group (p = 0.005 and p < 0.001, respectively). Compared to the mGPS 0 group, the mGPS 1 group had a 6.25 times greater risk of death (95% CI: 1.61-24.28, p = 0.008), and the mGPS 2 group had a 6.59 times greater risk of death (95% CI: 2.08-20.85, p = 0.001). High BMI was identified as a significant risk factor for being in the mGPS 2 group (OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.018-1.425, p = 0.030). In conclusion, elevated pretreatment mGPS was associated with poor overall survival in elderly patients with gastric cancer treated with perioperative FLOT therapy. As such, pretreatment mGPS can be a simple and useful tool to predict mortality in this specific patient group.

Sexual health is an important part of a healthy life. The aim of this study is to define Behçet's sexual dysfunction and the factors affecting it. Sixty-nine patients with Behçet's disease (BD) and 74 healthy controls were included in the study. International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) were filled out by patients and healthy control group (HCG). Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin and estradiol or testosterone levels according to gender were measured in Behçet's patients. The rate of sexual dysfunction and its relationship with gonadal hormones, Beck depression and SF 36 subgroups were evaluated in Behçet's patients. Sixty-nine patients with BD (mean age 39.55 ± 11.7) and 74 HCG (mean age 36.9 ± 6.84) were included in the study. Sexual dysfunction was observed in 74% (49) of BD and 59.5% (44) of HCG (p = 0.047). Prolactin level is within normal limits in all patients. Although there are abnormal levels of gonadal hormones, no relationship was found with sexual dysfunction. Depression especially is more prevalent compared to the healthy population (p = 0.016). The presence of depression negatively affects sexual life. Depression, SF 36 physical role limitations, energy vitality, vitality and mental health were associated with sexual dysfunction in patients with Behçet's disease. Sexual dysfunction was associated with the presence of depression and SF-36 subscales in Behçet's patients.

OBJECTIVES: Kidney transplant recipients are at increased risk for avascular necrosis due to steroid use and accompanying comorbidities. Concerning risk factors, uncertainty still exists. We evaluated the clinical characteristics and risk factors of avascular necrosis in kidney transplant recipients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Symptomatic avascular necrosis was found by magnetic resonance imaging in 33 of 360 kidney transplant patients between 2005 and 2021. The patients' clinical characteristics, biochemical testing, and medications were evaluated. RESULTS: We found the frequency of avascular necrosis to be 9.7% during the follow-up period. If the total steroid dosage used was more than 4 g in the first 3 months, the risk of developing avascular necrosis increased 4.08 times, and the presence of cytomegalovirus disease increased the risk by 4.03 times. Avascular necrosis was observed bilaterally in 60.6% of cases and at the femoral head in 66.7%. The frequency of avascular necrosis was highest in the first and second years posttransplant. CONCLUSIONS: We found that avascular necrosis appears most frequently in the first 2 years after kidney transplant and the most important risk factors are cumulative steroid dose and cytomegalovirus disease. In the follow-up of kidney transplant patients, it is important to use low-dose steroid doses if possible. Of note, preventing the development of cytomegalovirus disease by screening and prophylaxis for cytomegalovirus is also important in reducing the development of avascular necrosis.

BACKGROUND: While mortality rates decrease in many chronic diseases, it continues to increase in COPD. This situation has led to the need to develop new approaches such as phenotypes in the management of COPD. We aimed to investigate the distribution, characteristics and treatment preference of COPD phenotypes in Turkey. METHODS: The study was designed as a national, multicenter, observational and cross-sectional. A total of 1141 stable COPD patients were included in the analysis. RESULTS: The phenotype distribution was as follows: 55.7% nonexacerbators (NON-AE), 25.6% frequent exacerbators without chronic bronchitis (AE NON-CB), 13.9% frequent exacerbators with chronic bronchitis (AE-CB), and 4.8% with asthma and COPD overlap (ACO). The FEV1 values were significantly higher in the ACO and NON-AE than in the AE-CB and AE NON-CB (p < 0.001). The symptom scores, ADO (age, dyspnoea and FEV1 ) index and the rates of exacerbations were significantly higher in the AE-CB and AE NON-CB phenotypes than in the ACO and NON-AE phenotypes (p < 0.001). Treatment preference in patients with COPD was statistically different among the phenotypes (p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis was performed in terms of emphysema, chronic bronchitis and ACO phenotypes of 1107 patients who had thoracic computed tomography. A total of 202 patients had more than one phenotypic trait, and 149 patients showed no features of a specific phenotype. DISCUSSION: Most of the phenotype models have tried to classify the patient into a certain phenotype so far. However, we observed that some of the patients with COPD had two or more phenotypes together. Therefore, rather than determining which phenotype the patients are classified in, searching for the phenotypic traits of each patient may enable more effective and individualized treatment.

Vaccination induces the development of long-lasting immunity necessary for a sustained and essential protective antibody response. Understanding how long the humoral immune response induced by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) inactivated vaccine lasts is important to create an effective immunization scheme. This study aimed to detect the first, third, sixth month concentrations and seroconversion rates of the antibodies induced by the inactivated vaccine. The study included 282 healthcare workers who were vaccinated at days 0 and 28 by the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (3 µg/0.5ml). Anti-S-RBD-IgG (receptor binding domain) antibody concentrations and seroconversion rates were examined in vaccinated healthcare workers at the first, third and sixth months after the vaccination. MAGLUMI SARS-CoV-2 S-RBD IgG (CLIA) (Snibe Diagnostics, Chinese) kit was used for the detection of antibodies. The mean age of the healthcare workers was 38.93 ± 10.59 (min= 21-max= 64). After the administration of the second vaccine dose, the participants were found to be reactive for anti-SRBD-IgG antibodies by 98.2% and 97.8% at the first and third months, respectively,. The decrease in the mean plasma concentrations of anti-S-RBD IgG was observed as 56.7% in the cohort with only two doses of the vaccine (first month: 42.4 AU/ml versus third month: 18.2 AU/ml). In the cohort with a history of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) prior to the vaccination, the decrease was observed as 25.1% (first month: 58.29 versus third month: 43.64 AU/ml) and at a mean of 57.4 (0-90) days prior to vaccination, the decrease rate was 43.1% (first month: 55.05 AU/ml versus third month: 31.28 AU/ml), keeping more stable in participants infected at a mean of 183.1 (91-330) days prior to vaccination(a decrease of 5.2%; with 62.34 AU/ml at first and 59.08 AU/ml at third months). At the end of the sixth month, antibodies could not be detected in 16.7% of people who (n= 42) received two doses of the inactivated vaccine, and the amount of anti-S-RDB IgG decreased by an average of 52.5% compared to the third month, and by 74.8% compared to the first month. Antibody concentrations at the first, third, and sixth months after the vaccination with two doses of the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine were found to be decreased and at the sixth month, the rate of non-reactive people was 16.7%. As participants who had COVID-19 at a mean of 181 (90-330) days before the vaccination presented with a more stable antibody level, it can be concluded that a booster at months 6-12, resulting in a schedule of 0-1-6 months, is recommended for the inactive SARS-CoV-2 vaccination for effective herd immunity.

This prospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccine schemes, homologous versus heterologous vaccine strategies, and vaccine-induced anti-S-RBD-IgG antibody response in preventing COVID-19 among 942 healthcare workers 1 year after vaccination with the inactivated and/or mRNA vaccines. All participants received the first two primary doses of vaccines, 13.6% of them lacked dose 3, 50.5% dose 4, and 90.3% dose 5. Antibody levels increased with the increase in number of vaccine doses and also in heterologous vaccine regimens. In both inactive, mRNA vaccines and mixed vaccination, infection rates were significantly higher in two-dose-receivers, but lower in four- or five-dose receivers and increasing the total number of vaccine doses resulted in more protection against infection: the three-dose regimen yielded 3.67 times more protection, the four-dose 8 times, and five-dose 27.77 times more protection from COVID-19 infection, compared to any two-dose vaccination regimens. Antibody levels at the end of the first year of four- or five-dose-receivers were significantly higher than two- or three-dose receivers. To conclude, an increased number of total vaccine doses and anti-S-RBD antibody levels increased the protection from COVID-19 infection. Therefore, four or more doses are recommended in 1 year for effective protection, especially in risk groups.

This study aimed to evaluate the mixed and homogeneous application of the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine CoronaVac (CV) and the mRNA vaccine BNT162b2 (BNT). This prospective cohort study included 235 health care workers who had received two prime shots with CoronaVac. They were divided into three cohorts after the third month: Cohort-I (CV/CV); Cohort-II (CV/CV/CV); and Cohort-III (CV/CV/BNT). Anti-S-RBD-IgG and total anti-spike/anti-nucleocapsid-IgG antibody concentrations were examined in vaccinated health workers at the 1st, 3rd, and 6th months following the second dose of the vaccination. The mean age of 235 health care workers who participated in the project was 39.51 ± 10.39 (min-max: 22-64). At the end of the 6th month, no antibodies were detected in 16.7% of Cohort-I participants, and anti-S-RDB IgG levels showed a decrease of 60% compared to the levels of the 3rd month. The antibody concentrations of the 6th month were found to have increased by an average of 5.13 times compared to the 3rd-month levels in Cohort-II and 20.4 times in Cohort-III. The heterologous vaccination strategy "CoronaVac and BNT162b2 regimen" is able to induce a stronger humoral immune response and it will help remove inequalities in the developing world where CoronaVac was the initial prime.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, it is aimed to investigate the relationship between the oxytocin level and the rejection sensitivity, childhood mental traumas, and attachment styles in patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). METHODS: Participants between the ages of 18-30 were included in the study. The patient group consists of 31 participants and the healthy control group consists of 31 participants. Sociodemographic/Clinical Variables Questionnaire, Relationship Scales Questionnaire, Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire were administered to the participants included in the study. Serum oxytocin levels of the participants were measured using the Elisa method. RESULTS: The oxytocin levels were found to be significantly lower in patients with BPD than in healthy control subjects, whereas the rejection sensitivity and childhood traumas were found to be significantly higher. No difference was found between the patient and control groups in terms of attachment styles, yet it was determined that there may be differences between the oxytocin levels of the BPD patients according to the attachment styles the patients have. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the findings of this study revealed that the rejection sensitivity in BPD patients is not associated with oxytocin levels and childhood traumas, indicating the need to assess the BPD patients in terms of other biopsychosocial factors related to the etiopathogenesis of BPD.

OBJECTIVE: In parallel with common usage areas, pesticide poisonings are encountered in the community due to reasons such as no wearing of protective clothing and masks during use, unintentional consumption and suicide-intended intake. In this study was aimed to examine the cases who applied to the emergency department with pesticide poisoning and share of suicide cases. METHOD: This study is a retrospective record study based on the files of 234 patients who reported to the emergency department for pesticide and rodenticide poisoning between 2014 and 2018. The patients were compared in terms of sociodemographic, substance type, prognosis, and accident/suicide status. Chi-square test, Binary logistic regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data. RESULTS: Organophosphates was the most common substance recorded as a cause of poisoning, while rat poison placed second. 38% of the acute poisoning cases were suicide attempts. Poisoning among men was found to be prominently due to accident whiles among women suicidal poisoning was more prominent. While the mortality rate is 4.7% in all acute intoxication cases, the mortality rate in poisonings with suicidal purposes is 5.6%. Patients with psychiatric diseases have a 28-fold higher risk of intoxication of attempting suicide. The most common comorbid psychiatric disorders in acute pesticide poisoning are anxiety and depression. CONCLUSION: A major proportion of pesticide poisoning cases is suicide attempts. Suicide attempt is at the forefront in women and death rates are higher in people with psychiatric illness. It may be advisable to avoid the easy accessibility of pesticides.

BACKGROUND: Various COVID-19 vaccines are being developed around the world. Important questions to be answered regarding vaccines are efficacy, safety, and whether antibodies are protective when used in different communities. This study aimed to determine seroconversion rates of the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in healthcare workers in a hospital and short-term adverse events due to the vaccine. METHODS: The study carried out in Çukurova University, Turkey, comprised of 282 healthcare workers who received two doses of the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine administered in two 3 µg doses, 28 days apart. On day 28, after the second dose, antiS-RBD IgG and total anti-spike and anti-nucleocapsid IgM and IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 were detected by using in vitro chemiluminescence immunoassay method. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 39.06±10.65 (min=21, max=65) with 43.6% males and 56.4% females. On day 28, after the second dose, the seroconversion rates were found to be 92.9% for total anti-spike and anti-nucleocapsid IgG and 15.2% for IgM and 98.2% for anti-S-RBD IgG antibodies and having natural COVID-19 prior to vaccination, age and comorbidity were found to be significant factors for immunogenicity. The incidence of at least one adverse event was found as 29.8% after the first dose and 24.1% after the second dose, with the most common adverse events of having pain at the injection site, weakness, fatigue, and headache.

Toxic heavy metals released into the environment through various industrial processes have potential adverse effects on the environment and human health. In order to reveal these adverse health effects, it is vital to carry out toxicological studies by performing biomonitoring. This study aimed to assess the level of Cr, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb in the breast milk samples of mothers in the Cukurova region, Turkey, and its association with health risk to infants. Ten-milliliter postpartum milk samples were collected from 34 breast-feeding mothers in the first 2 months of their postpartum period and living in the Cukurova region, Adana. The measurement of target heavy metals levels was performed by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The average breast milk levels of Cr, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb were 8.25, 1.64, 0.37, 2.60, and 12.12 µg/L, respectively. Evaluation of breast milk samples for these toxic heavy metals revealed the high exposure level for Cr and As. However, the mothers who participated in the study were not occupationally exposed to these metals. This study showed that Cr, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb cross the placenta and blood-brain barrier prenatally and accumulate in breast milk postnatally.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to determine the effects of anxiety sensitivity, anxiety level, perceived stress and coping strategies on peritraumatic dissociation in post-earthquake acute stress disorder (ASD) patients. METHOD: Sociodemographic data form, Beck Anxiety Index (BAI), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3), Coping with Earthquake Stress Scale, and Peritraumatic Dissociation Scale (PDEQ) were applied to 477 patients diagnosed with ASD. RESULTS: Anxiety sensitivity cognitive sub-dimension explained 31.5%, anxiety explained 7%, and perceived stress explained 1% of the variation in peritraumatic dissolution development. A moderate positive correlation was determined between peritraumatic dissolution and anxiety, a weak positive correlation was found between peritraumatic dissolution and perceived stress, a weak positive correlation was determined between peritraumatic dissolution and positive thinking, and a very weak negative correlation was determined between peritraumatic dissolution and seeking social support. A moderate positive correlation was determined between peritraumatic dissolution and physical, cognitive and social sub-dimensions of anxiety sensitivity. CONCLUSION: The most important finding in the study was the fact that the highest contribution to the development of peritraumatic dissolution was by the cognitive sub-dimension of anxiety sensitivity. It could be suggested that individuals with high anxiety sensitivity may experience higher peritraumatic dissolution and these individuals could have a higher risk of PTSD later on.

OBJECTIVE: Skin dryness is a common dermatological problem among older people.We aimed to evaluate the frequency of moisturiser use and awareness of its benefits among older people. METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive study included 556 individuals over 65 years of age, all of whom were patients at family medicine and dermatology outpatient clinics at a tertiary teaching hospital. Data were summarised descriptively and analysed using binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Of the 556 individuals who participated in the study, 241 were women and 315 were men. Moisturisers were being used by 217 patients (39%), and 91 patients (16.4%) classified the use of skin moisturisers as skincare. CONCLUSION: We found that individuals over 65 years of age had insufficient knowledge regarding the use and benefits of skin moisturisers.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the nutritional status and anthropometric values in a group of patients with COPD and to examine the relationship between these factors and disease severity. METHODS: A total of 105 COPD patients were included in this cross-sectional study. The patients underwent spirometric exmination. Mini nutritional assessment form was applied, and the anthropometric values of the patients were measured by bioelectrical impedance method. Nutrient registration forms were given using a 3-day, 24-hour recall method to assess the nutrient uptake. COPD severity was determined using the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease criteria, and the correlations between nutritional status and disease severity parameters were measured. RESULTS: The prevalence of malnutrition in our patients with COPD was found to be 17%. Spirometric parameters were found to be significantly lower in patients with low body mass index (BMI) and malnutrition. As the modified Medical Research Council dyspnea scale score increased, the frequency of malnutrition increased (P=0.002). Positive significant correlation was found between spirometric variables and muscle mass and fat external tissue volume of the patients. Patients receiving higher protein content in diet showed a better muscle mass amount (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Our study results confirmed that malnutrition is an important and frequently encountered problem in COPD patients, and spirometric values of the patients with malnourishment and with low BMI are significantly lower. We think that nutritional status should be evaluated in every COPD patient, and nutritional intake should be tailored individually.
