BACKGROUND: Algorithms to monitor pump parameters are needed to further improve outcomes after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. Previous research showed a restored circadian rhythm in pump parameters in patients on HeartWare (HVAD) support. Circadian patterns in HeartMate3 (HM3) were not studied before, but this is important for the development of LVAD monitoring algorithms. Hence, we aimed to describe circadian patterns in HM3 parameters and their relation to patterns in heart rate (HR). METHODS: 18 HM3 patients were included in this study. HM3 data were retrieved at a high frequency (one sample per 1 or 2 h) for 1-2 weeks. HR was measured using a wearable biosensor. To study overall patterns in HM3 parameters and HR, a heatmap was created. A 24-h cosine was fitted on power and HR separately. The relationship between the amplitude of the fitted cosines of power and HR was calculated using Spearman correlation. RESULTS: A lower between patient variability was found in power compared with flow and PI. 83% of the patients showed a significant circadian rhythmicity in power (p < 0.001-0.04), with a clear morning increase. All patients showed significant circadian rhythmicity in HR (p < 0.001-0.02). The amplitudes of the circadian rhythm in power and HR were not correlated (Spearman correlation of 0.32, p = 0.19). CONCLUSIONS: A circadian rhythm of pump parameters is present in the majority of HM3 patients. Higher frequency pump parameter data should be collected, to enable early detection of complications in the future development of predictive algorithms.

AIMS: The major objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of heat-treating colostrum on the subsequent growth characteristics (weight gain, body size, dry matter intake and feed efficiency rate) and health of Holstein calves. METHODS: A total of 1200 neonatal Holstein calves on one commercial dairy farm were enrolled. The calves were divided into heat-treated (60°C for 90 min) and unheated (raw) colostrum groups. Calf serum IgG and total protein concentrations were measured before and after colostrum consumption. Health characteristics and disease prevalence were recorded during the suckling period. RESULTS: Consumption of heat-treated colostrum led to increased serum IgG (P < 0.0001) and total protein (P < 0.0001) concentrations, increased apparent efficacy of IgG absorption (P < 0.0001) and increased general health condition, weight gain (P < 0.0001) and clinical performance. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Heat-treatment of colostrum is an effective method to improve health and increase growth characteristics (weight gain, body size, dry matter intake and feed efficiency rate) of neonatal dairy calves, most likely by decreasing microbial load and facilitating IgG absorption.

Background: Establishment of experimental cystic echinococcosis (CE) in laboratory mice is required for the study of CE. Experimental CE may be established in primary or secondary forms; however, the primary form is more reliable for the study of CE. Aims: The aim of the study was to assess the possibility of establishment of primary CE in Balb/c mice via the oral administration of Echinococcus granulosus s.l. eggs. Methods: E. granulosus s.s. eggs were obtained from the gravid segments of the adult worms collected from an experimentally infected dog. Thirty-four female Balb/c mice were allocated into 4 groups and were orally infected with E. granulosus s.s. eggs as follows: 1) the mice with normal immunity, a single dose of 1000 eggs, 2) the mice with normal immunity, 3 doses of 500 eggs, 3) immunosuppressed mice, a single dose of 1000 eggs, and 4) immunosuppressed mice, 3 doses of 500 eggs. After 6.5 months, all the mice were opened and their internal organs were examined for the presence of CE cysts. The livers of infected mice were also examined for the presence of E. granulosus s.l. compartments by the PCR method. Results: There was no developed or developing CE cyst in the abdominal cavities or on the internal organs of all the mice in four groups. In addition, in the molecular study, all the examined liver samples were negative for the parasite material. Conclusion: The results of the present study revealed that Balb/c mice are not a suitable host for establishment of primary CE following the oral administration of E. granulosus s.s. eggs.

The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the impacts of Zataria multiflora aromatic water (ZMAW) and nano emulsion (NE) of Z. multiflora essential oil (ZMEO) on IL-4 (Th2-derived cytokine) and IFN-γ (Th1-derived cytokine) concentrations in mice with hydatidosis. Sixty four healthy BALB/c female mice were intraperitoneally injected by 1500 live protoscoleces of Echinococcus granulosus. Five month after injection, the infected mice were divided into seven treatment groups, including: Albendazole (100 mg/kg), ZMAW (100 ml/L), Albendazole 100 + ZMAW (Albendazole 100 mg/kg and ZMAW 100 ml/L), Albendazole 50 + ZMAW (Albendazole 50 mg/kg and ZMAW 100 ml/L), Albendazole 100 + NE of ZMEO (Albendazole 100 mg/kg and NE of ZMEO 10 ml/L), albendazole 50 + NE of ZMEO (albendazole 50 mg/kg and NE of ZMEO 10 ml/L) and the control group with no treatment. The mice received the ZMAW, NE of ZMEO and/or albendazole through drinking water for 90 days. At the end of treatment (90 days), blood specimens were harvested from all mice. A significant reduction in IL-4 concentration was revealed in the albendazole 50 group + NE of ZMEO, when compared to the control group (P < 0.05). No significant difference was noticed for the IFN-γ concentration between the trial groups. Increased IFN-γ: IL-4 ratio was observed in the albendazole 50 + ZMAW, Albendazole 50 + NE of ZMEO, Albendazole 100 + NE of ZMEO groups in comparison with the control group (P < 0.05). The findings observed in the current study showed that the administration of ZMAW and NE of ZMEO along with albendazole could enhance the IFN-γ: IL-4 ratio (Th1/Th2 balance), which may have therapeutic value in the treatment of hydatid disease.

Hydatid disease is an economic and public health concern in many countries. Currently, surgery is the main treatment option for hydatid disease. In the surgical treatment of hydatidosis, the use of scolicidal agents is very important due to inactivating live protoscoleces and preventing the recurrence of infection. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate newscolicidal agents and novel medications with higher safety and efficacy. In the previous in vitro studies, the scolicidal effects of the methanolic extracts and aromatic water of Zataria multiflora (Z. multiflora) have been demonstrated. Consequently, in this study, the impact of the nanoemulsion of Z. multiflora essential oil on subcutaneous hydatid cysts was compared with albendazole (ABZ). Fifty laboratory male mice were inoculated with 300 viable protoscoleces subcutaneously on the two sides of the abdomen. Following five months of infection, the remaining infected mice (n=42) were allocated into two treatment and one control (without treatment) groups containing fourteen animals each. Group A received ABZ at the dose of 50 mg/kg for 60 days, group B received the nanoemulsions of Z. multiflora at the dose of 50 mg/kg in drinking water for 60 days, and group C was considered as the control group. All the infected mice were euthanized and necropsied two months post-intervention. Afterwards, the cysts were cautiously collected and their number, size, and weight were compared between the mice of different groups. The mean number of hydatid cysts indicated that the nanoemulsion of Z. multiflora essence had a relative superiority to ABZ. On the other hand, the therapeutic effect of ABZ was higher than the nanoemulsion of Z. multiflora essential oil in terms of the mean weight and mean size of hydatid cysts. However, no significant difference was observed between the groups (P>0.5). Overall, the number, weight, and size of cysts were not significantly different between the groups in this investigation. The lack of satisfactory therapeutic results in this study might be due to the location of hydatid cysts in the subcutaneous space.

OBJECTIVE: There are various protoscolicidal agents for inactivation of protoscoleces of hydatid cysts before and during surgical operation. The present study was aimed to evaluate the protoscolicidal effect of two concentrations of Eucalyptus globulus on protoscoleces of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato under in vitro condition and to compare its efficacy with hypertonic saline, povidone iodine and silver nitrate. METHODS: Live protoscoleces obtained from the liver of naturally infected sheep were exposed to 0.5% and 1% of Eucalyptus globulus essential oil, 5% hypertonic saline, 10% povidone iodine and 0.5% silver nitrate for 1 and 3minutes. Phosphate buffered saline was used as a negative control. One percent eosin staining method was used to test the viability of protoscoleces in different groups. RESULTS: While the mean percentage of dead protoscoleces was 6.08% in the control group, the scolicidal power of 5% hypertonic saline was only 6.54% and 6.60% after 1 and 3min respectively. 0.5% E. globulus EO demonstrated 97.38% and 100% scolicidal activity after 1 and 3min respectively. The mean protoscolicidal power of 1% E. globulus EO, 10% povidone iodine and 0.5% silver nitrate was 100% after one minute. CONCLUSIONS: According to the results of this study, E. globulus EO demonstrated high scolicidal power in a short period of time. Hence, this herbal product could be considered as a potent natural scolicidal agent that could be used before and during surgery of hydatid disease.

This report describes an outbreak of purulent mandibular and/or maxillary osteomyelitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a sheep flock located in the Khuzestan province, Iran. Jaw bones of almost 100 out of 500 mature sheep in a flock became severely deformed with a variably sized firm swelling, without any signs of inflammation in the surrounding soft tissues. The affected animals showed anorexia, depression, swelling of the mandibular and/or maxillary area, loss of cheek teeth and poor body condition. These animals were gradually culled in a period of 3 months. Postmortem examination showed a hard swelling of jaw bones with dirty greenish pus that filled alveolar molar teeth cavities. Histopathologic findings revealed necrotic areas surrounded by mixed population of inflammatory cells with exuberant fibrosis around some area of the lesions and irregular trabeculae of woven bone. In bacteriology, pure culture of P. aeruginosa was isolated from all of 7 sampled sheep. Based on clinical examination, radiography, histopathological features and bacteriology, the lesions were diagnosed as chronic suppurative osteomyelitis caused by P. aeruginosa. According to bacteriological results, the likely source of bacterial infection in this study was drinking water.

Hepatic injury is the major limitation of long-term albendazole administration in patients with cystic echinococcosis (CE), which could give rise to cessation of treatment. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the protective effects of Zataria multiflora aromatic water (AW) against the hepatic injury induced by long-term albendazole treatment in mice with CE. Fifty healthy BALB/c female mice were infected intraperitoneally by injection of 1500 protoscoleces per animal. Five months after infection, the infected animals were divided into five treatment groups including Z. multiflora (40ml/l in drinking water for 90days), albendazole (200mg/kg/day for 90days), Z. multiflora+albendazole 200 (40ml/l Z. multiflora and 200mg/kg/day albendazole for 90days), Z. multiflora+albendazole100 (40ml/l Z. multiflora and 100mg/kg/day albendazole for 90days), and untreated (control) group. At the end of the treatment period, anesthesia was performed and blood samples were collected directly from the heart prior to euthanasia. Liver variables and oxidative stress markers were measured in the blood serum samples. A decrease in serum liver enzyme activity in the both Z. multiflora+albendazole groups was observed when compared to control, Z. multiflora and albendazole groups; however, the results for Z. multiflora+albendazole 100 were significant (p<0.007) and superior compared to those for Z. multiflora+albendazole 200. No significant differences for oxidative stress markers were observed between the different groups. The results of the present study revealed that a combined therapy with Z. multiflora AW and albendazole is effective against hepatic injury induced by CE and/or long term albendazole administration in mice with cystic echinococcosis.

The growing trends of emergence of antifungal-resistant Candida strains has recently been inspired the researchers to design new antifungal agents with novel mechanisms of action. Glabridin is an originally natural substrate with multiple biological activities which propose it as a novel anticancer, antimicrobial and antifungal agent. In the present study, the antifungal effect of glabridin against Candida glabrata isolates and its possible mechanism of action were investigated. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for glabridin against fluconazole-resistant and fluconazole-SDD strains of C. glabrata were investigated using the Clinical and laboratory standards institute document M27-A3 and M27-S4 as a guideline. Possible alternations in the expression of two critical genes involved in yeast apoptosis, MCA1 and NUC1, were assayed by real-time PCR. DNA damage and chromatin condensation was investigated using DAPI staining. Although glabridin led to a significant decrease in MICs against fluconazole-resistant C. glabrata (MIC50: 8µg/mL), no significant decreased was shown for fluconazole-SDD strains. Therefore, a distinct azole-independent mechanism could be responsible for the inhibitory activity of glabridin. Overexpression of MCA1 and NUC1 genes in addition to DNA damage and chromatin condensation suggesting the involvement of apoptosis signaling in C. glabrata stains exposed to glabridin. This study suggests that glabridin might be considered as a novel naturally originated agent to fight against fluconazole-resistance C. glabrata strains.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Candidiasis is a widespread fungal infection caused by different Candida species. Rapid identification of Candida species in clinical laboratory is becoming increasingly important since the identification and discrimination of ethological agents for early treatment. We aimed at molecular identification of commonly Candida species isolated from clinical samples by using both PCR-RFLP assay and amplification of hwp1 gene. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical samples comprising of vaginal specimens ,cutaneous, sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage(BAL,( and blood cultures were recovered from suspected patients. Candida isolates were initially identified phenotypically and confirmed by molecular approaches based on restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP (with MspI restriction enzyme. Amplification of hwp1 gene was performed for discrimination of C. albicans from C. dubliniensis and C.africana. RESULTS: The most abundant species were C. albicans (n=67; 44.6 %), C. glabrata (n=10; 20 %), C.tropicalis (n=20; 13.3 %), C. krusei (n=12; 8 %), C.parapsilosis (n=11; 7.3 %). Out of 67 C.albicans species, 6 species identified as C. dubliniensis and 4 species identified as C. africana. CONCLUSION: High frequency of non-albicansCandida species and differences in levels of susceptibility to the antifungal agents are important issues in medicine .Therefore, to manage the Candida-related infections properly, molecular diagnostic methods would be fast, reliable and even cost-effective approaches for identification of Candida species.

Hydatidosis is a medically and veterinary important parasitic disease that is endemic in many parts of the world. Unilocular hydatid cysts may develop in almost any part of the body. Up to 70% of hydatid cysts are located in the liver, followed by 25% in the lungs. Cerebral hydatidosis is an uncommon manifestation of the disease, occurring in less than 1/1000 infected hosts, yet diagnosis does pose a problem. We have reported an exceptionally rare case of cerebral hydatidosis in cattle. This is the first report to describe the characteristic pathological features of the cerebral hydatidosis in cattle caused by the G1 genotype of Echinococcus granulosus. Genotypic analysis was performed on a hydatid cyst from a cow originating from southern Iran, based on the sequence analysis of the cox1 mitochondrial gene.

The present study assessed whether the genetic variation among different hosts (sheep and cattle) and geographical isolates (n= 28) of Dicrocoelium dendriticum from Iran is present based on mitochondrial (nad1) and ribosomal (ITS-2) DNA markers. Molecular analysis revealed the presence of at least ten and two distinct haplotypes in the NADH dehydrogenase gene (nad1) and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2), respectively. The nad1 and ITS-2 sequence data were deposited in GenBank under accession numbers, JX050110-134 and JQ966972-3. According to the results of our study, ND-D and ITS-A are established as being the predominant haplotypes of D. dendriticum in Iran. The Iranian isolates showed a higher intraspecific genetic diversity of 0-0.97% for nad1, compared to 0-0.42% for ITS-2. The alignment and comparison of nad1 and ITS-2 sequences revealed eight and one polymorphic sites, respectively. In the nad1 sequences, six were silent and two nucleotide substitutions were responsible for amino acid alterations. A phylogenetic analysis of the sequence data revealed that host associations and geographic location are not likely useful markers for D. dendriticum haplotype classification. Consequently, sequencing results obtained from the nad1 gene as a mitochondrial marker for the first time in this study would provide a valuable tool to analyse further molecular details of D. dendriticum worldwide.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mycotoxins are secondary fungal metabolites with a very high diversity that are produced by some species of Aspergillus which frequently leads to contaminate food and agricultural products. Recently, elimination of aflatoxin contamination in food and feed has been considered by scientists worldwide. Although, the antibacterial and antifungal effects of vitamins as natural compounds have been proven, the mechanism of vitamins effect on Aspergillus parasiticus growth and aflatoxin production is not yet clear. In this study, the effect of thiamine (vitamin B1) was studied on Aspergillus parasiticus growth, aflatoxins production and the afIR gene expression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A standard strain of Aspergillus parasiticus was applied for performing antifungal susceptibility test in different concentrations of thiamine. Antifungal susceptibility test was performed according to CLSI M38-A2 document. The concentration of aflatoxin was determined by HPLC. Moreover, the quantitative changes in the aflR gene expression were analyzed by Real Time PCR method. RESULTS: The minimum inhibitory concentration was yielded as > 500 mg/ml. However, HPLC analysis results showed that aflatoxin production reduced in samples treated with 500 mg/ml of thiamine. In addition, the level of afIR gene expression was significantly reduced after treating with 500 and 250 mg/ml of vitamin B1. CONCLUSION: Based on the obtained results, thiamine could not inhibit the fungal growth completely. However, the rate of afIR gene expression and aflatoxin production was significantly reduced after fungal treating with thiamine. Consequently, using natural compounds such as vitamins may be regarded as potential antitoxic agent in food industry and the industries related to agriculture.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Microorganism-based synthesis of nanostructures has recently been noted as a green method for the sustainable development of nanotechnology. Nowadays, there have been numerous studies on the emerging resistant pathogenic bacteria and fungal isolates, the probable inability of bacteria and fungi to develop resistance against silver nanoparticles' (SNPs) antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and, particularly antibacterial activities. In this study, we aim to use the yeast Saccharomycescerevisiae model for synthesis of SNPs and to investigate its antifungal activity against some isolates of Candidaalbicans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A standard strain of S.cerevisiae was grown in liquid medium containing mineral salt; then, it was exposed to 2 mM AgNO3. The reduction of Ag+ ions to metal nanoparticles was virtually investigated by tracing the color of the solution, which turned into reddish-brown after 72 hours. Further characterization of synthesized SNPs was performed afterwards. In addition, antifungal activity of synthesized SNPs was evaluated against fluconazole-susceptible and fluconazole-resistant isolates of Candidaalbicans. RESULTS: The UV-vis spectra demonstrated a broad peak centering at 410 nm, which is associated with the particle sizes much less than 70 nm. The results of TEM demonstrated fairly uniform, spherical and small in size particles with almost 83.6% ranging between 5 and 20 nm. The zeta potential of SNPs was negative and equal to -25.0 (minus 25) mv suggesting that there was not much aggregation. Silver nanoparticles synthesized by S.cerevisiae, showed antifungal activity against fluconazole-susceptible and fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans isolates, and exhibited MIC90 values of 2 and 4 µg/ml, respectively. CONCLUSION: The yeast S. cerevisiae model demonstrated the potential for extracellular synthesis of fairly monodisperse silver nanoparticles.

Cerebral coenurosis is caused by Coenurus cerebralis, the larval stage of Taenia multiceps. The metacestode causes severe lesions in the brain and spinal cord of the intermediate host, so-called "gid" or "stagger" disease. Whereas, the non-cerebral coenurosis caused by Coenurus gaigeri, the larval stage of Taenia gaigeri, particularly affects goats. The cyst form of the Taenia gaigeri is found in intramuscular and subcutaneous tissues. The difference in the sequence of mitochondrial genes of cox1 and nadI and also other variations reported for clinical, morphological and pathological aspects in coenurosis lead to the hypothesis that there is genetic intraspecific variability within this species, such as in other members of the genus Taenia. Nevertheless, it has been shown that sheep and goats have been infected by both cerebral and non-cerebral coenurosis and it has been suggested that such cerebral and non-cerebral metacestodes may belong to different species of Taenia which are host specific for these hosts.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare chemical and microbiological quality of the 21 Iranian bottled drinking waters reported on manufacturer's labeling and standards in 2012. Samples were analyzed for chemical properties K(+), F(-), SO4 (2-), Cl(-), Mg(2+), Ca(2+), and pH. Total and fecal coliform and heterotrophic plate counts of selected samples were analyzed by MPN and HPC tests, respectively, for three months. Finally, the labeled and real contents of the samples were compared. Potassium and sulfate ions about 43 and 52 percent of studied sample contents had values higher than label amounts, respectively. Ca(2+), Cl(-) ions, and pH were about 71, 48, and 67 percent, respectively, less than label values. Total and fecal coliforms had negative results. The mean concentrations and standard deviations for K(+), Cl(-), pH, Ca(2+), Mg(2+), SO4 (2-), and HPC were 1.13 ± 1.06, 16.39 ± 31.97, 6.6 ± 0.7, 28.35 ± 10.34, 86.58 ± 33.21, 24.17 ± 17.30 mg/L, and 16855 ± 25603 cfu/mL, respectively. Thus, there is possibility of microorganisms' growth in favorite conditions in bottled water. It was imperative to assess the public health risks in bottled water in Iran.

Some of the metacestodes are not only zoonotic but are also responsible for severe tissue damage, reduction in milk and meat production, and considerable economic loss due to condemnation of the infected organs of the herbivorous animals. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of Cysticercus ovis, Cysticercus tenuicollis, hydatid cyst and Coenurus gaigeri in sheep and goats and Cysticercus bovis, Cysticereus tenuicollis and hydatid cyst in cattle. A total of 1050 sheep, 950 goats and 500 cattle slaughtered at Shiraz Slaughterhouse were carefully examined for these metacestodes. Cysticercus tenuicollis was found in 184 (17.52%) sheep and 523 (55.05%) goats. The prevalence of C. tenuicollis was higher in males than females (P<0.01), and was higher in goats compared to sheep (P<0.01). Hydatid cyst was found in 478 (45.52%) sheep and 95 (10.0%) goats and its prevalence was higher in older animals compared to the younger ones. Coenurus gaigeri was found in 5 (0.48%) sheep and 17 (1.79%) goats and Cysticercus ovis was found in one male sheep only (0.09%). Cysticercus bovis was found in 3 male cattle (0.6%) and hydatid cyst was found in 58 (11.6%) cattle. The prevalence of hydatid cyst was higher in older cattle compared to the younger ones and higher in females than males. These results suggest that the high prevalence of the metacestodes infestations in this area is a great concern for both medical and veterinary authorities to design therapeutic and preventive programs to overcome this problem.

Onychomycosis is a common nail disorder resulting from the invasion of the nail plate by a dermatophyte, yeast or mould species and gives rise to some diverse clinical presentations. The purpose of the present study was to isolate and identify the causative fungi of onychomycosis in the population of Tehran, Iran. Nail samples from 504 patients with prediagnosis of onychomycosis during 2005 were examined both by direct microscopical observation of fungal elements in KOH preparations and in culture for the identification of the causative agent. All samples were inoculated on (i) Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA, Merck), (ii) SDA with 5% chloramphenicol and cycloheximide in duplicate for dermatophyte and (iii) SDA with 5% chloramphenicol in triplicate for mould isolation. The criteria for the diagnosis of onychomycosis caused by non-dermatophytic moulds were based on microscopical observation of fungal elements, growth of the same mould in all triplicate culture and no growth of a dermatophyte or yeast in all the cultures. Of 504 cases examined, 216 (42.8%) were mycologically proven cases of onychomycosis (144 fingernails, 72 toenails). Among the positive results, dermatophytes were diagnosed in 46 (21.3%), yeasts in 129 (59.7%) and non-dermatophytic moulds in 41 (19%). Trichophyton mentagrophytes was the most common causative agent (n = 22), followed by Trichophyton rubrum (n = 13), Candida albicans (n = 42), Candida spp. (n = 56) and Aspergillus spp. (n = 21). Nearly half of the clinically suspected fungal nail infections are onychomycosis and yeast is responsible for most of the infections in Iran.

Selective immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency is the most common of the primary immunodeficiencies with a frequency of 1/300-1/3000, depending on the screened population. As secretory IgA (SIgA) has a protective role in mucosal surfaces from invasion of microorganisms, it is thought that IgA-deficient subjects are susceptible to periodontal diseases and oral manifestations. Previous studies show contradictory results, concerning the involvement of the individuals' periodontium with IgA deficiency. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the oral manifestations in IgA-deficient subjects with controls. Eleven selective IgA-deficient subjects aged 3-18 years with serum IgA levels <10 mg dl(-1) and 11 age-sex-matched healthy children as the controls entered the study. Oral mucosal investigation, dental caries, plaque accumulation and periodontal status were assessed. Serum immunoglobulin levels were measured by single radial immunodiffusion (SRID) method. Saliva immunoglobulins and secretory component levels were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods. IgA-deficient patients had serum and saliva IgA levels less than 10 mg dl(-1) and 10 microg ml(-1), respectively, but other serum immunoglobulin levels were normal and saliva immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels were increased, compared with controls. There were no significant differences in oral manifestations between IgA-deficient subjects and controls, which may be a result of compensatory increase of saliva IgM or other non-immunological defence factors in saliva. Thus, it is not necessary to evaluate IgA and SIgA in all the patients with oral and dental lesions and it is thought that it is better to investigate other factors.
