BACKGROUND: Dentin hypersensitivity, often occurring after dental treatments or from erosive lesions, is a prevalent patient complaint. This study introduces a paste combining 8% L-arginine, calcium carbonate, and potassium nitrate to evaluate its impact on dentinal tubules occlusion, dentin permeability, and tooth sensitivity. METHODS: Dentin surfaces from 24 third molars (thickness: 2 mm) were divided into two groups of 12. One received the experimental paste, while the other received a placebo without desensitizer. Permeability and sealing ability were assessed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dentin permeability measurement. The pastes' effects on hypersensitivity were then examined in a triple-blind, randomized parallel-armed clinical trial with 16 eligible patients. Sensitivity to cold, touch, and spontaneous stimuli was recorded using the VAS scale at various intervals post-treatment. Statistical analysis was conducted using Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney U, Friedman, and Wilcoxon tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The permeability test demonstrated a significant reduction in dentin permeability in the experimental group (P = 0.002) compared to the control (P = 0.178). SEM images revealed most dentinal tubules in the intervention samples to be occluded. Clinically, both groups showed a significant decrease in the three types of evaluated sensitivity throughout the study. However, no significant difference in sensitivities between the two groups was observed, with the exception of cold sensitivity at three months post-treatment (P = 0.054). CONCLUSION: The innovative desensitizing paste featuring 8% L-arginine, calcium carbonate, and potassium nitrate effectively occluded dentinal tubules and reduced dentin permeability. It mitigated immediate and prolonged dentin hypersensitivity to various stimuli, supporting its potential role in managing dentin hypersensitivity. Objective: Tooth bleaching may negatively affect the enamel surface properties, such as reduction in hardness values, and remineralizing agents can reverse these effects. This study evaluated the effect of remineralizing agents before, during, and after the bleaching process on enamel's whitening effectiveness and microhardness. Methods and Materials: The initial color of 104 bovine incisors after immersion in tea solution was recorded, and then, the teeth were randomly divided into eight groups (n = 13). Group 1 (NC) was considered the control with no treatment, and Group 2 (B) was bleached with 40% hydrogen peroxide gel. The 3% fluorohydroxyapatite (FHA) and 2% sodium fluoride (NaF) were applied before (FHA/B, NaF/B), during (FHA + B, NaF + B) and after (B/FHA, B/NaF) the bleaching process in other groups. The final color and microhardness in three depths of 20-30, 50-60, and 100-120 µm were measured. Data were analyzed using Shapiro-Wilk, one-way ANOVA, Tukey, Games Howell, repeated measurement, and LSD tests. Results: The FHA + B presented the lowest ΔE, significantly lower than other groups, except B/FHA. The ΔE in B/FHA was significantly lower than B/NaF. The bleaching significantly reduced the enamel hardness in three depths. The highest microhardness values were reported for B/NaF and NaF + B, which have no noticeable difference with NC, while FHA/B showed the lowest hardness in three depths, which was significantly lower than NC. Conclusion: The application of NaF before, during, and after the bleaching improved the microhardness of bleached enamel as the unbleached one with no adverse effect on whitening effectiveness.

This study aimed to formulate and characterize the experimental lollipops containing chitosan- zinc oxide nanoparticles (CH-ZnO NPs) and investigate their antimicrobial effects against some cariogenic bacteria. The CH-ZnO NPs were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, and Transmission electron microscope (TEM). Then, four groups were made, including lollipops coated with 2 and 4 ml of CH-ZnO NPs, 0.7 ml CH-ZnO NPs incorporated lollipops, and those with no CH-ZnO NPs. Their antibacterial effectiveness against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus was evaluated by direct contact test and tissue culture plate method in planktonic and biofilm phases, respectively. Chlorhexidine mouthrinse (CHX) was used as a positive control group. In the planktonic phase, the antibacterial properties of both groups coated with CH-ZnO NPs were comparable and significantly higher than incorporated ones. There was no significant difference between CHX and the lollipops coated with 4 ml of NPs against S. mutans and CHX and two coated groups against L. acidophilus. None of the experimental lollipops in the biofilm phase could reduce both bacteria counts. The experimental lollipops coated with 2 and 4 ml of CH-ZnO NPs could reveal favorable antimicrobial properties against two cariogenic bacteria in the planktonic phase.

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial biofilm is known as the main cause of periodontal disease. Generally, the anaerobic Gram-negative, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum, are considered the most identified bacteria. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial effect and cytotoxicity of two experimental composites containing chitosan-silver oxide (CH-Ag2O) particles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four experimental groups, including Ag2O and CH, along with two composites of CH-Ag2O 20 and CH-Ag2O 60 mg, were prepared. Antimicrobial activity was performed against Porphyromonas gingivalis (ATCC#33277) and Fusobacterium nucleatum (ATCC#25586) using the agar dilution method. Moreover, the cytotoxicity assay was performed on human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) by the use of the MTT method. The obtained data were analyzed with descriptive methods, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey's LSD tests. RESULTS: The antibacterial activity of both composites was higher than both CH and Ag2O, and the greatest antibacterial properties were presented in CH-Ag2O 60. In all three measurements (24, 48, and 72h), the greatest cytotoxicity was seen in Ag2O, followed by CH, CH-Ag2O 20, and CH-Ag2O 60 in descending order, respectively. The cytotoxicity of these components was related to the concentration and not to the time of exposure. The results showed that Ag2O in 3.7 and 7.5 µg/ml concentrations and CH-containing groups in 250 and 500 µg/ml were toxic to the cultured HGF. CONCLUSION: The experimental composite containing CH-Ag2O 60 showed the greatest antibacterial properties against two periodontal pathogens evaluated. In order to clarify the clinical significance of composite cytotoxicity, further clinical studies are necessary.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on the microshear bond strength (µSBS) of resin cement to zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic and to compare it with lithium disilicate ceramic. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, 80 specimens containing two glass ceramics of IPS e.max press and VITA SUPRINITY were prepared and categorized into four groups according to the surface treatments (n = 10) as Group 1 (C): no treatment (control); Group 2 (HF): etching with 9% hydrofluoric acid (HF) for 90 s followed by silane application; Group 3 (SPH): sandblasting with Al2O3 particles (50 µm), etching with 35% phosphoric acid for 40 s followed by application of silane and adhesive (Clearfil liner bond F); and Group 4 (SB): sandblasting with Al2O3 followed by silanization. Then, a resin cement (Panavia F2) was applied to the prepared ceramic surfaces. All samples were subjected to thermal aging (5000 cycles, 5-55). The µSBS test was evaluated and failure modes were recorded. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk, two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's Honest Significant Difference post hoc tests (P < 0.05). Results: IPS e.max press samples revealed significantly higher µSBS values compared to VITA SUPRINITY (P < 0.001), in whole surface treatments. The HF group showed the highest µSBS value, followed by the SPH and SB groups, respectively (P < 0.001). Adhesive failure was recorded as a predominant failure mode. Conclusion: The adhesion performance of IPS e.max press was significantly higher than VITA SUPRINITY. The common surface treatment protocol including HF application followed by silanization was the most effective surface treatment for both glass ceramics.

Methods: Thirty-six bovine incisors and resin composite samples were prepared, stained with black tea, and then randomly divided into two groups. The samples were brushed with a charcoal-containing toothpaste (Colgate® MAX WHITE) and daily toothpaste (Colgate® Max Fresh) for 10,000 cycles. Before and after brushing cycles, color variables (ΔL, Δa, Δb), total color change (ΔE), plus Vickers microhardness were evaluated. Two samples of each group were prepared for surface roughness assessment via atomic force microscope. Data were analyzed by Shapiro-Wilk, Independent sample t-test and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: According to the obtained results, ΔE and ΔL were significantly higher whereas Δa and Δb were noticeably lower in charcoal-containing toothpaste group in comparison with daily toothpaste in both composite and enamel samples. The microhardness of samples brushed with Colgate® MAX WHITE was significantly higher than that of Colgate® Max Fresh in enamel (P = 0.04), whereas no significant difference was found in composite resin samples (P = 0.23). Colgate® MAX WHITE enhanced the roughness of both enamel and composite surfaces. Conclusion: The charcoal-containing toothpaste could improve the color of both enamel and resin composite with no negative effect on microhardness. Nevertheless, its adverse roughening effect should be considered occasionally on composite restorations.

PURPOSE: The differentiation of resin remnants from enamel is a critical factor to minimize enamel damage after bracket debonding. This study was conducted to produce, and ascertain the efficacy of two colouring agents in minimizing enamel loss, adhesive and bonding remnants, and surface roughness after debonding. METHODS: Two dyes containing annatto (orange colour) and curcumin (yellow colour) were produced. Seventy-two maxillary premolars were divided into three groups. After bracket bonding and debonding, the adhesive remnant was removed with a fine diamond bur. In groups 1 and 2, the orange and yellow dyes were utilized during the removal process, respectively. In group 3 (control) adhesive was removed with no colouring agent. The buccolingual dimension of the teeth was measured at the occlusal, middle, and apical areas, before bonding and after clean-up. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) and bonding remnant index (BRI) scores were recorded and the surface roughness parameters were measured. Data were analysed by ANOVA, Tukey, and Fisher's exact tests (α=0.05). RESULTS: Enamel loss was significantly lower in the groups cleaned by the use of colouring agents than that of the control group (P<0.05). No bonding agent was observed when the dyes were used, whereas 65% of teeth in the control group showed the remaining bonding material (P<0.001). There was no significant difference in ARI scores or surface roughness alterations among the study groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The two dyes produced in this study were effective in enhancing the visibility of residual resin materials and minimizing enamel loss during the clean-up process.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) of different bonding protocols to commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) using two universal adhesives and Alloy Primer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 120 cubes of CP Ti were airborne-particle abraded and then divided into 6 groups (n = 20 each) according to bonding protocol: (1) Scotchbond Universal (SU; 3M ESPE), (2) Alloy Primer (AP; Kuraray) + SU; (3) G-Premio Bond (GP; GC); or (4) AP + GP. The specimens from groups 1 to 4 were cemented with RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE), while those from groups 5 and 6 were cemented using Panavia F2.0 cement (PAN; Kuraray) without and with prior AP application, respectively. After 24 hours, half the specimens were subjected to µSBS measurement and the other half to thermocycling (5,000 cycles) before testing. Data were analyzed using Shapiro-Wilk, two-way analysis of variance, Games-Howell, and independent sample t test (α = .05). RESULTS: The µSBS values obtained from the AP + SU group were significantly higher than from the GP (P = .003) and the AP + GP (P = .022) groups. After thermocycling, the µSBS of both groups treated with SU were significantly higher than those other groups (P < .001). The application of AP could not improve adhesion of resin cements to CP Ti. Thermocycling significantly reduced the µSBS values of the PAN group, whereas it noticeably enhanced the adhesion of SU and AP + SU. The predominant failure mode in all groups was adhesive. CONCLUSION: The application of AP, followed by SU, produced the most effective bonding to CP Ti, which was able to endure limited thermal aging.

OBJECTIVE: Oral infections and dental caries are considered serious health problems. Therefore, searching for new agents with antimicrobial properties seems to be crucial. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the recombinant Thrombocidin-1 [TC-1] peptide on some oral pathogens. Also, the cytotoxicity of this peptide on human gingival fibroblast cells was investigated. METHODS: In this study, Pichia pastoris was used for the expression of recombinant TC-1. The microbroth dilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] and minimum bacterial concentration [MBC]. It tested against four main oral pathogens; Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus oralis, and Enterococcus faecalis. Moreover, the cytotoxicity analysis was done on gingival fibroblast cells by the MTT method. The data were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance [ANOVA] and Tukey's HSD tests. RESULTS: The most bactericidal effect of TC-1 was against S. salivarius, the highest bacteriostatic effect was against S. salivarius, and S. oralis had the lowest MIC value of 1.512 µg/ml. The Thrombocidin- 1 peptide showed lower antibacterial properties against E. faecalis compared with CHX, unlike the stronger antimicrobial effect on examined streptococci. According to cytotoxicity examination, no concentration of TC-1 presented over 50% growth inhibition [IC50] of the fibroblasts cells. CONCLUSION: Based on antimicrobial tests and cytotoxicity results, the Thrombocidin-1 peptide may be useful as a safe antibacterial agent against some oral pathogens in dental materials.

OBJECTIVE: Bleaching sensitivity (BS) is the most common adverse effect of tooth bleaching treatments. This study evaluated the effect of adding 1% sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) on BS and the whitening effectiveness of a bleaching gel. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Two maxillary quadrants from 26 patients were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups in a split-mouth design. In the control group the at-home bleaching gel containing 3% hydrogen peroxide, and in the experimental quadrant the same gel with 1% SHMP, were applied in individual trays for 6 hours per night for 2 weeks. The patients' sensitivity to cold and touch as well as spontaneous sensitivity were recorded based on a visual analog scale (VAS). Changes in shade guide units (ΔSGU) and ΔE were measured using a spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and independent sample t test. RESULTS: Twenty-four patients completed the study. After 2 weeks, the sensitivity to cold and touch was significantly lower in the intervention group compared to the control (P = .015 and P = .039, respectively). The spontaneous sensitivity revealed no significant alteration between these two groups and during the bleaching period in each group (P > .050). Regarding both color measurements, the bleaching effectiveness in both groups was comparable, with no noticeable difference (P > .050). CONCLUSION: The application of 1% SHMP was able to reduce the BS with no detrimental effect on the at-home bleaching effectiveness. (Quintessence Int 2021;52:596-605; doi: 10.3290/j.qi.b1098303).

Periodontal diseases are highly prevalent and can affect high percentage of the worlds' population. Oxidative stress and inflammation play an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Nowadays, more attention has been focused on the herbal remedies in the field of drug discovery. Green tea is an important source of polyphenol antioxidants. It has long been used as a beverage worldwide. The most interesting polyphenol components of green tea leaves that are related with health benefits are the catechins. Taken together, this review suggested that green tea, with its wide spectrum of activities, could be a healthy alternative for controlling the damaging reactions seen in periodontal diseases.

RESUMEN

The prevalence of periodontitis is around 20-50% in the global population. If it is not treated, it can cause tooth loss. Periodontal treatment aims at preserving the patient's teeth from various damages, including infection control and restoring lost periodontal tissue. The periodontium has great biological regenerative potential, and several biomaterials can be used to improve the outcome of periodontal treatment. To achieve the goal of periodontal tissue regeneration, numerous studies have used fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) to stimulate the regeneration of both the soft tissue and bone. FGF2 induced a significant increment in the percentage of bone fill, bone mineral levels of the defect sites, length of the regenerated periodontal ligament, angiogenesis, connective tissue formation on the root surface, formation of dense fibers bound to the alveolar bone and newly synthesized cementum in teeth. This review will open further avenues to better understand the FGF2 therapy for periodontal regeneration.

OBJECTIVES: The present study was conducted to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of the recombinant chimer present in the lactoferrampin-lactoferricin [LFA-LFC] derived from the camel milk on some oral bacteria responsible for dental caries and endodontic failures. METHODS AND MATERIAL: The antimicrobial activity was assessed on the Streptococcus mutans [ATCC 35668], Streptococcus salivarius [ATCC 9222], Streptococcus oralis [ATCC 35037], and Enterococcus faecalis [ATCC 29212], using the microbroth dilution method. The cytotoxicity analysis was done through the MTT method on the human gingival fibroblasts. The data were reported using the descriptive methods and were analyzed by the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD test. RESULTS: Results showed that the chimeric peptide had the highest bacteriostatic effect on S. salivarius with the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration value of 1.22 µg/Ml. Also, LFA-LFC chimer was more effective against S. mutans and S. salivarius compared to using 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash. The minimum bactericidal concentration analysis showed the most bactericidal effect against S. mutans [1.256 µg/mL]. In spite of the greater antibacterial effect on the evaluated streptococci, this peptide showed lower bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties against E. faecalis compared to the chlorhexidine. Based on cytotoxicity assay, over 50% of the cells were viable in all the evaluation times, demonstrating the biocompatibility of the peptide. CONCLUSION: The LFA-LFC chimer revealed comparable or even more effective antibacterial properties compared to the chlorhexidine mouthwash against the caries-inducing bacteria with no toxicity on the human gingival fibroblast cells. So, this peptide can be used as a safe alternative to chlorhexidine and other chemicals in dental applications for the prevention and management of dental caries.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted aimed at evaluating the antibacterial property of the recombinant peptide of bacteriocin entrocin P (EnP), the essential oil of Cuminum cyminum, and the extract of Ferulago angulata on some oral pathogens. Besides, the cytotoxicity of EnP was evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The antimicrobial property was tested on streptococcus mutans (ATCC 35668), streptococcus salivarius (ATCC 9222), streptococcus oralis (ATCC 35037), and Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), using the microbroth dilution method. The 0.2% Chlorhexidin (CHX) mouthwash was used as the control group. Besides, the cytotoxicity analysis was done on gingival fibroblasts by the MTT colorimetric method. The data were reported using descriptive methods, and analyzed by one-way ANOVA, and Tukey's HSD test. RESULTS: The strongest bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of C. cyminum and F. angulata were observed for S.mutans and S. oralis, respectively (with the MIC and MBC value being 62.5 µg/mL). The antibacterial properties of EnP were comparable to those of CHX, being several times stronger than medicinal plants (1-14 µg/mL). Based on the cytotoxicity evaluation, there was no statistically significant difference observed between the cytotoxicity of the control group and that of Enp for three evaluations, except after 72 hours when the cell viability at the concentration of 3.75 µg/ml was significantly lower than that of the control group (P=0.05). However, no concentration of EnP was observed to be over 50% of the growth inhibition (IC50) of the fibroblasts for the three evaluations. CONCLUSIONS: EnP could be utilized in dental materials as a natural and safe antimicrobial agent against oral streptococci and E. faecalis, being as effective as CHX mouthwash. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and complications of several bleaching methods in patients with discolored teeth after orthodontic treatment. This randomized clinical trial involved 60 volunteers (31 women, 29 men) aged 14 to 30 years, who finished fixed orthodontic therapy at least three months before the study commencement and complained of discoloration on upper front teeth. The subjects were divided into four groups by treatment. The patients in group 1 received home bleaching, whereas those in groups 2 to 4 underwent in-office bleaching using a diode laser, a plasma arc and no light source, respectively. Tooth color was measured at baseline, one hour after the end of the bleaching procedure, and one week later, and the color alteration between different stages was compared among the groups. The severity of tooth sensitivity and the occurrence of other post-treatment complications were recorded. The color change between baseline and one week after treatment was greatest in the home-bleaching and the laser-assisted bleaching groups, and lowest in the plasma-arc bleaching group, although the difference between the groups was not significant (p > 0.05). Tooth sensitivity over 24 hours after bleaching was lowest in subjects who had undergone laser-assisted bleaching and highest in those who had received in-office bleaching without light (p < 0.05). All methods were effective in managing tooth discoloration after orthodontic treatment. Home bleaching produced favorable color alteration. Amongst the in-office approaches, laser-assisted bleaching should be considered as the best option, as it produced effective results with lowest tooth sensitivity and over a shorter period of time.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to determine the effects of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) combined with other remineralizing agents on the staining and microhardness of early enamel caries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: in This in vitro study The enamel buccal surfaces of 70 bovine incisors were classified into seven study groups (n = 10). Remineralizing agents were employed alone and in combination with SHMP in different groups, including: (1) 8% SHMP, (2) 2% sodium fluoride, (3) 2% sodium fluoride + SHMP, (4) Remin Pro®, (5) Remin Pro®+SHMP, (6) MI Paste Plus, and (7) MI Paste Plus + SHMP. A modified pH-cycling technique was used to reconstruct the dynamics of caries. Colorimetric and microhardness analyses were conducted before demineralization (T1), after caries formation (T2), and after the remineralizing treatment (T3). The data were analyzed by the one-way analysis of variance and the repeated measurement analysis (P > 0.05). RESULTS: After remineralizing cycles, the experimental groups treated with either SHMP alone or in combination with other materials showed less significant changes in the three variables of color (Δa, Δb, and ΔL) and the overall color change (ΔE). The enamel caries treated with Remin Pro® presented the highest color change, while Remin Pro®+ SHMP resulted in the least changes. The mean value of microhardness after remineralization improved significantly in all groups, except in the MI Paste Plus + SHMP group that showed the lowest value. In contrast, the highest microhardness value was recorded for Remin Pro®, being comparable to that of the sound teeth (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: SHMP, either alone or combined with remineralizing agents, created the least staining. Remineralizing materials alone showed higher surface hardness, while sodium fluoride alone showed higher surface hardness when combined with SHMP.

BACKGROUND: The most appropriate luting agent for attaching the prefabricated Ti-based insert of hybrid abutments to its ceramic component has not yet been determined. This study was done aimed at examining the micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) of different cements to commercially pure titanium (Cp Ti). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 100 milled cubes of Cp Ti was airborne-particle abraded using 250 µm aluminum oxide particles. Specimens were then divided into 5 groups (n=20) according to the type of resin cement used: (1) Panavia F.2, (2) Rely X U200, (3) Panavia SA LUTING Plus, (4) GC Fuji I, and (5) GC FujiCEM 2. After 24h storage, half of the samples were subjected to 5000 cycles of thermal aging. Next, the bonded samples were tested in the micro-shear mode. Data (MPa) were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA and the post hoc Tukey test (α=0.05). After debonding, each sample was examined for the failure mode classification. RESULTS: The highest µSBS value in the study cements was obtained for Panavia F.2 cement (P<0.001) with no significant difference with Rely X U200 (P=0.07). The µSBS values of both GI-based cements were significantly lower than those of resin cements. Thermal aging decreased the µSBS values of all groups (P=0.003) significantly. The mainly occurred failure mode in all groups was the adhesive feature. CONCLUSIONS: Resin cements demonstrated acceptable bonding to Cp Ti, yet Gl-based cements did not. From among the cements examined, Panavia F.2 can be considered as the best option for bonding to Ti. Key words:Bond strength, Glass ionomer, Hybride abutment, Resin cement, Titanium.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effects of laser irradiation associated with photo-absorbing agents containing sodium fluoride (NaF), MI paste Plus or Remin Pro® on microhardness and surface structure of white spot lesions (WSLs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-six premolars were divided into two halves, then immersed in a demineraling solution to induce WSLs. The samples were divided into 8 groups by treatment (n=12) : (1) control, (2) diode laser (810 nm, 500 mW, 90 s), (3) NaF, (4) MI Paste plus, (5) Remin Pro®, (6) NaF + Laser, (7) MI Paste Plus + Laser, (8) Remin Pro® + Laser. Microhardness was measured before and after remineralization treatments. Two samples from each group were selected for SEM analysis. RESULTS: Microhardness increased significantly after all treatments with the exception of control, Laser and Remin Pro® groups (p >0.05). ANOVA revealed no significant difference in initial microhardness (P=0.21), whereas a significant difference was noted after treatment (P=0.009). The application of sodium fluoride with or without laser irradiation produced the highest microhardness among the groups (p<0.05). SEM analysis revealed some cracks on lased enamel and non-homogenous coatings of minerals after the use of remineralizing products. CONCLUSIONS: The use of NaF either alone or combined with laser irradiation was the most effecttive strategy for increasing microhardness of WSLs. The application of diode laser through photoabsorbing agents containing sodium fluoride or MI Paste Plus did not produce any additional effects in enhancing remineralization of WSLs, whereas the combined application of diode laser with Remin Pro® was effective. Introduction: This study investigated the effect of fractional CO2 laser on shear bond strength (SBS) of resin cement to feldspathic porcelain. Methods: Sixty blocks of unglazed feldspathic porcelain were randomly divided into 5 groups of 12 by treatment. Group 1 and 2 underwent etching with 9.6% hydrofluoric acid (HF) and air abrasion with alumina particles, respectively. In groups 3 and 4, a fractional CO2 laser was applied for 10 seconds using 20 W/10 mJ (group 3) or 15 W/20 mJ (group 4). The specimens in group 5 were first treated by fractional CO2 laser (15 W/20 mJ) and then etched by HF acid. After silane application, a resin cement (Clearfil SA) was poured into plastic molds over the porcelain surface and light cured. SBS was assessed by a universal testing machine and the type of bond failure was determined. Results: Analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated a significant difference in SBS among the study groups (P<0.001). Pairwise comparison demonstrated that the application of fractional CO2 laser followed by HF acid yielded SBS that was significantly greater than that of the other groups (P<0.05). The SBS of both laser groups (groups 3 and 4) were comparable to each other and significantly lower than the other groups (P<0.05). No significant difference was found in the distribution of failure modes among the groups (P=0.522) Conclusion: The application of fractional CO2 laser followed by HF acid treatment can improve SBS of resin cement to feldspathic porcelain and could be recommended when demanding extra retention.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effect of incorporating nanoparticles of silver (NAg) and amorphous calcium phosphate (NACP) into a self-etching primer of a resin cement on the microtensile bond strength of dentin, regarding the proven antibacterial feature of NAg and remineralizing effect of NACP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Flat, mid-coronal dentin from 20 intact extracted human third molars were prepared for cementation using Panavia F2.0 cement. The teeth were randomly divided into the four test groups (n=5) according to the experimental cement primer composition: cement primer without change (control group), primer with 1% (wt) of NACP, primer with 1% (wt) of physical mixture of NACP+Nag, and primer with 1% (wt) of chemical mixture of NACP+Nag. The resin cement was used according to the manufacturer's instructions. After storage in distilled water at 37℃ for 24 h, the bonded samples were sectioned longitudinally to produce 1.0 × 1.0 mm beams for micro-tensile bond strength testing in a universal testing machine. Failure modes at the dentin-resin interface were observed using a stereomicroscope. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc tests and the level of significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS: The lowest mean microtensile bond strength was obtained for the NACP group. Tukey's test showed that the bond strength of the control group was significantly higher than those of the other experimental groups, except for group 4 (chemical mixture of NACP and NAg; P=.67). CONCLUSION: Novel chemical incorporation of NAg-NACP into the self-etching primer of resin cement does not compromise the dentin bond strength.
