RESUMEN

We previously generated a high-metabolizable energy (HME) perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) by genetically modifying the plant to increase the leaf lipid content. Although substantial progress has been made toward characterizing physiological changes of HME ryegrass, very limited information exists for feeding value and its suitability for adoption into the pastoral system. In this study, independent HME ryegrass lines with a range of elevated leaf lipid concentrations were analyzed for changes in fatty acids and possible associated changes in the broader nutritional profile, including the gross energy, which was found to increase by 6.8%. Because ryegrass is often ensiled and fermentation in the rumen leads to biohydrogenation of fatty acids as well as enteric methane production, we sought to investigate these effects on HME ryegrass. This was achieved by performing mini-scale silos and using an automated gas measurement system to incubate the material in rumen fluid in vitro for 24 h. Our study included treatments comprising 3 independent HME ryegrass genotypes and wild-type control materials prepared fresh and as silage, employing in total 5 incubation studies, using rumen fluids collected from 4 nonlactating Jersey × Holstein cows. At intervals during the incubation, the production of gases, volatile fatty acids, and the degree of biohydrogenation were measured. Statistical data analysis indicated that differences in the nutritional compositions of the ensiled materials largely reflected those of their fresh counterparts. Incubation of both fresh and ensiled HME ryegrass in rumen fluid resulted in: (1) a greater percentage of valuable unsaturated fatty acids compared with the control; (2) a significant reduction of butyrate; and (3) a 10 to 15% decrease in the methane proportion of the total gas production. We conclude that ensiling could be a convenient option for preserving HME as a locally produced high-value supplementary feed; however, large-scale application needs to be investigated. In this paper we discuss the potential use of HME ryegrass to enhancing forage feeding value and the potential environmental benefits to the pastoral agriculture industry.

Selection lines of sheep with low and high CH yield (g/kg DMI; CH/DMI) are being developed on the basis of feeding pelleted alfalfa hay at 2.0 times maintenance ME requirements in respiration chambers, but their divergence under predominant grazing conditions, as in New Zealand, is not known. The objectives of this study were to determine CH emissions and rumen fermentation characteristics in sheep from low and high CH/DMI selection lines while grazing pasture. Two grazing experiments were conducted with 42 selection line ewes in March 2013 (Exp. 1) and 98 selection line progeny ewe hoggets in October/November 2014 (Exp. 2), with CH emissions estimated by the SF tracer technique and DMI estimated by titanium oxide in combination with natural long-chain -alkanes. Total daily CH production (g/d) was similar between high and low CH/DMI selection line sheep in Exp. 1 and lower for low CH/DMI progeny compared with high CH/DMI progeny in Exp. 2 ( < 0.05). The CH/DMI tended to be 20% lower for low CH/DMI line sheep compared with high CH/DMI selection line sheep in Exp. 1 ( < 0.10) and was 15% lower for the low CH/DMI line in Exp. 2 ( < 0.01). Total VFA concentration and concentrations (m) of acetate, butyrate, and isobutyrate plus isovalerate were lower ( < 0.05) for low CH/DMI line sheep compared with high CH/DMI selection line sheep in both experiments. The current study indicates that differences in CH/DMI and VFA concentrations in selection line sheep, previously established on alfalfa pellets, are also present to a similar magnitude when grazing pasture.

The objective of this study was to determine methane (CH) and carbon dioxide (CO) emissions from 8 beef heifers (approximately 20 mo of age and 382 ± 24.3 kg BW) measured by respiration chambers and the sulfur hexafluoride (SF) tracer technique and a mobile head-chamber, spot-sampling system (GreenFeed; C-Lock Inc., Rapid City, SD) when fed alfalfa silage at 3 feeding levels and 4 feeding frequencies. Feeding frequency may affect CH yield (g/kg DMI), and measurement systems (such as GreenFeed or SF) are needed to obtain accurate estimates of CH emissions from individual cattle under grazing where new pasture is provided once or twice daily. The Hereford × Friesian heifers were used in 5 consecutive periods (P1 to P5) of 14 d with CH and CO emissions measured with the SF technique in wk 1 (5-6 d), with chambers in wk 2 (2 d), and with the GreenFeed system when not in chambers (8 d) of each period. Alfalfa silage was restricted to 6, 8, 8, and 8 kg DM/d in P1, P2, P3, and P4, respectively, and provided ad libitum (10.9-12.2 kg DM/d) in P5. Silage was fed in 2, 2, 3, and 4 meals per day in P1, P2, P3, and P4, respectively, and was continuously available (refilled twice daily) in P5. Methane production increased from 141 to 265 g/d as DMI doubled ( < 0.001), but average CH yields measured in respiration chambers (24.5 g/kg DMI) and by the SF technique (22.8 g CH/kg DMI) and the GreenFeed system (26.2 g/kg DMI) were unaffected by feeding management ( = 0.6 for chambers and SF and = 0.06 for GreenFeed). The CH yields estimated by the GreenFeed system did not differ from CH yields estimated by the chambers in P1, P2, P3, and P5 but were greater ( < 0.02) than CH yields estimated by the SF technique in P2, P3, P4, and P5. Yields of CO (g/kg DMI) decreased with increasing DMI ( < 0.04) and CO production (g/d) increased from 5,293 to 9,167 g/d as DMI increased ( < 0.001). In general, the SF technique and the GreenFeed system provided means for CH yield that were not different from those of respiration chambers, and CH yields (g/kg DMI) were unaffected by DMI level or feeding frequency.

The objective of this study was to determine the genetic parameters of methane (CH4) emissions and their genetic correlations with key production traits. The trial measured the CH4 emissions, at 5-min intervals, from 1225 sheep placed in respiration chambers for 2 days, with repeat measurements 2 weeks later for another 2 days. They were fed in the chambers, based on live weight, a pelleted lucerne ration at 2.0 times estimated maintenance requirements. Methane outputs were calculated for g CH4/day and g CH4/kg dry matter intake (DMI) for each of the 4 days. Single trait models were used to obtain estimates of heritability and repeatability. Heritability of g CH4/day was 0.29 ± 0.05, and for g CH4/kg DMI 0.13 ± 0.03. Repeatability between measurements 14 days apart were 0.55 ± 0.02 and 0.26 ± 0.02, for the two traits. The genetic and phenotypic correlations of CH4 outputs with various production traits (weaning weight, live weight at 8 months of age, dag score, muscle depth and fleece weight at 12 months of age) measured in the first year of life, were estimated using bivariate models. With the exception of fleece weight, correlations were weak and not significantly different from zero for the g CH4/kg DMI trait. For fleece weight the phenotypic and genetic correlation estimates were -0.08 ± 0.03 and -0.32 ± 0.11 suggesting a low economically favourable relationship. These results indicate that there is genetic variation between animals for CH4 emission traits even after adjustment for feed intake and that these traits are repeatable. Current work includes the establishment of selection lines from these animals to investigate the physiological, microbial and anatomical changes, coupled with investigations into shorter and alternative CH4 emission measurement and breeding value estimation techniques; including genomic selection.

Background: to report a rare case of papillary carcinoma in thyroglossal duct cyst and discuss its management. Material and Method: a 72 year-old man was clinically diagnosed to have a big thyroglossal duct cyst. Sistrunk's procedure followed by total thyroidectomy on the evidence of papillary cancer in thyroglossal duct cyst. Results: histopathologic examination revealed a papillary carcinoma in the thyroglossal duct cyst and normallity in the thyroid gland. The patient remained free of disease on follow-up. Conclusion: most cancers arising in thyroglossal duct cyst are of low risk, and Sistrunk's procedure with a total thyroidectomy is an adequate treatment for such cancers.


Objetivo: reportar un caso raro de carcinoma papilar en un quiste tirogloso y discutir su manejo. Paciente y Método: un hombre de 72 años a quien se realizó un diagnóstico clínico de un quiste tirogloso, fue llevado a una cirugía de Sistrunk's y luego una tiroidectomía total ante la evidencia de cáncer papilar en el quiste tirogloso. Resultados: el examen histopatológico reveló un carcinoma papilar de tiroides en el quiste tirogloso y la glándula tiroides fue normal, el paciente permaneció libre de enfermedad en su seguimiento. Conclusiones: la mayoría de los cánceres que surgen en quiste del conducto tirogloso son de bajo riesgo, y el procedimiento Sistrunk's con una tiroidectomía total es un tratamiento adecuado para este tipo de cáncer.
