BACKGROUND: Dental fluorosis (DF) is caused by excessive exposure to fluoride during odontogenesis and leads to various changes in the development of tooth enamel. Some regions in Mexico are considered endemic fluorosis zones due to the high fluoride content in drinking water. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the association between the concentration of fluoride in drinking water and the severity of dental fluorosis in northern and western Mexico. METHODS: This protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (ID: CRD42023401519). The search for information was carried out in the PubMed/Medline, Scopus, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar databases between January 2015 and October 2023. The overall relative risk was calculated using the inverse of variance approach with the random effects method. The RoB 2.0 tool was used to construct risk plots. RESULTS: Eleven articles were analyzed qualitatively, and most of the included studies presented at least one level of DF severity; six articles were analyzed quantitatively, dividing them into two regions. In North region it was observed a higher prevalence of severe TF cases, corresponding to ≥ TF 5 category (4.78) [3.55, 6.42]. In the West region, most of the included studies presented a higher prevalence of less severe cases, corresponding to ≤ TF 4, in comparison with the North region (0.01) [0.00, 0.52], interpreted as a protective effect. CONCLUSION: The concentrations of fluorides in drinking water are reportedly high in these regions and are directly related to the severity of dental fluorosis experienced by the inhabitants. In the Northern region exists a major concentration of fluoride in drinking water compared with the Western region as well as a prevalence of higher severity cases of dental fluorosis.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been reported to play an important role in the etiology of dental caries. The aim of this research was, through a systematic review, to identify SNPs recently associated with dental caries in pediatric populations. We included studies performed in humans up to 18 years of age that evaluated the relationship between SNPs and dental caries from 2017 to 2022. Articles that covered other study variables were excluded. PubMed, ScienceDirect and Web of Science were used to search for information and the included articles were evaluated with one of the Joanna Briggs Institute's tools. Twenty-five articles were selected, 60% of which were given high methodological quality. A total of 10,743 research subjects, ranging in age from 20 months to 17 years, participated in the study. The SNPs considered risk factors were identified in the genes miRNA202, VDR, AMELX, TUFT1, KLK4, MBL2, ENAM, DEFB1, HLA-DRB1, TAS1R1, DSPP, RUNX2 and MMP13; those considered protective factors were identified in the genes MMP20, AMBN, MMP9, TIMP2, TNF-α, VDR, IL1B, ENAM and HLA-DRB1. This systematic review presents the genetic polymorphisms that are associated with the etiology of caries in children and adolescents, some of which act as risk factors and others as protective factors against the disease.


Se ha reportado que los polimorfismos de nucleótido único (SNPs) juegan un papel importante en la etiología de la caries dental. El objetivo de esta investigación fue, a través de una revisión sistemática, identificar los SNPs asociados recientemente a la caries dental en poblaciones pediátricas. Se incluyeron estudios realizados en humanos de hasta 18 años de edad que evaluaron la relación entre los SNPs y la caries dental, publicados desde el 2017 hasta el 2022. Se excluyeron los artículos que abarcaron otras variables de estudio. PubMed, ScienceDirect y Web of Science se utilizaron para la búsqueda de información y los artículos incluidos fueron evaluados con una de las herramientas del Instituto Joanna Briggs. Fueron seleccionados 25 artículos, al 60% de ellos se le otorgó calidad metodológica alta. En total participaron 10,743 sujetos de invetigación, cuyas edades variaron de 20 meses a 17 años. Los SNPs considerados factores de riesgo fueron identificados en los genes miRNA202, VDR, AMELX, TUFT1, KLK4, MBL2, ENAM, DEFB1, HLA-DRB1, TAS1R1, DSPP, RUNX2 y MMP13, los considerados factores de protección se identificaron en los genes MMP20, AMBN, MMP9, TIMP2, TNF-α, VDR, IL1B, ENAM y HLA-DRB1. Esta revisión sistemática expone los polimorfismos genéticos que se encuentran asociados a la etiología de la caries en niños y adolescentes, algunos de los cuales actúan como factores de riesgo y otros como factores de protección ante la enfermedad.

Introducción: el hueso está en remodelación constante para mantener la estructura del esqueleto, tener un ciclo de resorción por los osteoclastos y formación de hueso nuevo a cargo de los osteoblastos; el hueso también es susceptible a enfermedades sistémicas, traumas, edad y trastornos genéticos que afectarán el remodelado óseo, produciendo una pérdida masiva de masa ósea regulado por hormonas, citocinas, enzimas, etcétera. El objetivo es realizar una revisión sistemática de artículos que muestren cambio o alteración al utilizar tratamientos con microvibraciones y farmacológicos sobre la catepsina K en el hueso alveolar. Material y métodos: para realizar una comparación entre la efectividad del tratamiento a base de microvibraciones y con inhibidores de la catepsina K, se realizó una revisión sistemática en nueve bases de datos (Wiley Online Library, PubMed, Google Academic, Scopus, ScienceDirect, SciELO, Medline, EBSCO y Springer Link). La población de estudio fueron ratas y ratones. Resultados: en este estudio se incluyeron 20 artículos cuya investigación se realizó en estudios clínicos. En los resultados podemos observar cómo todos los tratamientos de alguna forma mejoran el proceso de remodelado óseo. Es difícil comparar cuál de los tratamientos dentro de cada grupo es mejor que otro, debido a que los resultados expresados son cualitativos. Conclusión: acorde a los resultados expresados se opta por realizar un tratamiento con microvibraciones debido a que el uso de inhibidores de la catepsina K aún no se encuentra completamente desarrollado y no se comprenden sus consecuencias debido a su manera sistémica de actuar (AU)


Introduction: the bone is in constant remodeling to maintain the skeletal structure, having a cycle of resorption by osteoclasts and formation of new bone by osteoblasts, the bone is also susceptible to systemic diseases, trauma, age and genetic disorders that affect bone remodeling, producing a massive loss of bone mass regulated by hormones, cytokines, enzymes, etcetera. The objective is to perform a systematic review of articles that show a change or alteration when using micro-vibration and pharmacological treatments on cathepsin K in the alveolar bone. Material and methods: in order to make a comparison between the effectiveness of micro-vibration and cathepsin K inhibitor treatments, a systemic review was carried out in nine databases (Wiley Online Library, PubMed, Google Academic, Scopus, ScienceDirect, SciELO, Medline, EBSCO and Springer Link). The study population was rats and mice. Results: this study included 20 articles whose research was carried out in clinical studies. In the results we can see how all the treatments in some way improve the bone remodeling process, it is difficult to compare which treatment within each group is better than the other, because the results expressed are qualitative. Conclusion: according to the results expressed, it is decided that it is better to perform a treatment with micro vibrations because the use of cathepsin K inhibitors are not yet fully developed and their consequences are not understood due to their systemic way of acting (AU)

RESUMEN

El objetivo de este estudio fue establecer y mantener activo un programa de control de calidad semanal en un sistema de mamografía digital de campo completo (FFDM) con tomosíntesis digital de mama (DBT) para optimizar la relación dosis-calidad de imagen en el tamizaje mamográfico y en el diagnóstico de las patologías de la mama, así como determinar la sensibilidad y especificidad en el periodo 2019-2022. Las imágenes mamográficas fueron obtenidas con el maniquí del Colegio Americano de Radiología (ACR) como parte del programa de control de calidad y con el uso de un dosímetro se determinó la dosis glandular media (DGM). También se midieron otras variables que afectan calidad de imagen y dosis. La imagen optimizada tiene el potencial de reducir la tasa de mortalidad por cáncer de mama debido a que el cáncer de mama es un problema de salud pública en los países en vías de desarrollo. Los resultados generales en el periodo del estudio se ilustran con graficas e intervalos de confianza al 95% (IC, 95%), además los valores numéricos se expresan en términos del error estándar de la media con 95% de confianza. Para mamografía digital de campo completo (FFDM): mAs = 160 ± 3.74, kVp = 28, dosis glandular media (DGM) = 1.69 ± 0.02 mGy, razón señal-ruido (SNR) = 62.20 ± 0.67, razón contraste-ruido (CNR) = 12.16 ± 0.15 y para tomosíntesis digital de mama (DBT): mAs = 61.42 ± 1.14, kVp = 29, dosis glandular media (DGM) = 1.54 ± 0.01 mGy. Los valores de las diferentes variables fueron determinados de acuerdo a la metodología del fabricante (Hologic, 2011). Los valores de la sensibilidad y la especificidad fueron para mamografía digital de campo completo (FFDM) sensibilidad 91% y especificidad 94% y para tomosíntesis digital de mama (DBT) sensibilidad 94% y especificidad 97%. Los resultados de dosis y calidad de imagen en ambas modalidades mamografía digital de campo completo (FFDM) y tomosíntesis digital de mama (DBT) muestran que el programa de control de calidad se mantuvo operativo durante el estudio manteniendo una relación optimizada entre dosis y calidad de imagen


The objective of this study was to establish and maintain active a weekly quality control program in a full-field digital mammography (FFDM) system with digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) to optimize the dose-image quality relationship in mammographic screening and in diagnosis of breast pathologies, as well as determining sensitivity and specificity in the period 2019-2022. Mammographic images were obtained with the American College of Radiology (ACR) phantom as part of the quality control program and the mean glandular dose (DGM) was determined with a dosimeter. Other variables that affect image quality and dose were also measured. Optimized imaging (image quality-dose) has the potential to reduce the breast cancer mortality rate because breast cancer is a public health problem in developing countries. The general results in the study period are illustrated with graphs and 95% confidence intervals (CI, 95%), in addition the numerical values are expressed in terms of the standard error of the mean with 95% confidence, For full field digital mammography (FFDM): mAs = 160.3 ± 3.74, kVp = 28, mean glandular dose (DGM) = 1.69 ± 0.02 mGy, signalto-noise ratio (SNR) = 62.20 ± 0.67, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) = 12.16 ± 0.15 and for tomosynthesis digital breast (DBT): mAs = 61.42 ± 1.14, kVp = 29, mean glandular dose (DGM) = 1.54 ± 0.01 mGy. The values of the different variables were determined according to the manufacturer's methodology. Mammography facility sensitivity and specificity values were determined using pathology results during the study. For FFDM mode they were sensitivity 91% and specificity 94% and for DBT mode they were sensitivity 94% and specificity 97%. The dose and image quality results in both full field digital mammography (FFDM) and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) modalities show that the quality control program remained operational during

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Periodontal disease (PD) is a multifactorial oral disease regularly caused by bacterial biofilms. Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) have offered good antimicrobial activity; moreover, there is no available scientific information related to their antimicrobial effects in biofilms from patients with PD. This study reports the bactericidal activity of AgNP against oral biofilms related to PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: AgNP of two average particle sizes were prepared and characterized. Sixty biofilms were collected from patients with (30 subjects) and without PD (30 subjects). Minimal inhibitory concentrations of AgNP were calculated and the distribution of bacterial species was defined by polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Well-dispersed sizes of AgNP were obtained (5.4 ± 1.3 and 17.5 ± 3.4 nm) with an adequate electrical stability (-38.2 ± 5.8 and -32.6 ± 5.4 mV, respectively). AgNP showed antimicrobial activities for all oral samples; however, the smaller AgNP had significantly the most increased bactericidal effects (71.7 ± 39.1 µg/mL). The most resistant bacteria were found in biofilms from PD subjects (p < 0.05). P. gingivalis, T. denticola, and T. forsythia were present in all PD biofilms (100%). CONCLUSIONS: The AgNP showed efficient bactericidal properties as an alternative therapy for the control or progression of PD.

Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a defect of the dental enamel that predominantly affects first molars and permanent incisors. Identifying the significant risk factors associated with MIH occurrence is essential for the implementation of prevention strategies. The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the etiological factors associated with MIH. A literature search was carried out from six databases until 2022; it covered pre-, peri-, and postnatal etiological factors. The PECOS strategy, PRISMA criteria, and the Newcastle-Ottawa scale were used, and 40 publications were selected for qualitative analysis as well as 25 for meta-analysis. Our results revealed an association between a history of illness during pregnancy (OR 4.03 (95% CI, 1.33-12.16), p = 0.01) and low weight at birth (OR 1.23 (95% CI, 1.10-1.38), p = 0.0005). Furthermore, general illness in childhood (OR 4.06 (95% CI, 2.03-8.11), p = 0.0001), antibiotic use (OR 1.76 (95% CI, 1.31-2.37), p = 0.0002), and high fever during early childhood (OR 1.48 (95% CI, 1.18-1.84), p = 0.0005) were associated with MIH. In conclusion, the etiology of MIH was found to be multifactorial. Children with health disorders in the first years of life and those whose mothers underwent illnesses during pregnancy might be more susceptible to MIH.

Introducción: la pérdida de hueso es un suceso que afecta a la totalidad del esqueleto. Así, las alteraciones musculoesqueléticas afectan a millones de personas en todo el mundo y están entre las causas más comunes de dolor crónico. Objetivo: conocer los efectos de la microvibración y estrógeno en el remodelado óseo. Material y métodos: se realizó una revisión sistemática, se buscó en siete bases de datos, se incluyeron estudios clínicos controlados realizados con ratas o ratones en el periodo de publicación del 2004 al 2022. La calidad de la evidencia sintetizada se evaluó con la escala de Jadad. Resultados: se identificaron quince artículos como estudios primarios. La microvibración reportó cambios in vivo/in vitro totalmente dependientes del estímulo que conlleva incremento de la cortical externa. A su vez, con la administración de estrógeno se reportaron efectos, específicamente, en el hueso trabecular y en el periostio, así como colágeno inmaduro que indican un recambio óseo. Conclusión: tanto la microvibración como la administración de estrógeno coadyuvan a la remodelación del tejido óseo y son aprovechables como tratamiento en el momento que exista un problema de pérdida ósea (AU)


Introduction: Bone loss is an event that affects the entire skeleton. Thus, musculoskeletal disorders affect millions of people worldwide and are among the most common causes of chronic pain. Objective: to know the effects of micro-vibration and estrogen on bone remodelling. Material and methods: a systematic review was carried out; seven databases were searched; Controlled clinical studies conducted with rats or mice in the publication period from 2004 to 2022 were included. The quality of the synthesized evidence was assessed using the Jadad scale. Results: fifteen articles were identified as primary studies. Micro vibration reported in vivo/in vitro changes dependent on the stimulus that entails an increase in the outer cortex. In turn, with the administration of estrogen, effects were reported, specifically in the trabecular bone and in the periosteum, as well as immature collagen that indicates bone turnover. Conclusion: both micro-vibration and the administration of estrogen contribute to the remodelling of bone tissue and are usable as a treatment for bone loss (AU)

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the immunohistochemical expression of connexin 43 (Cx43) in tooth germs (TGs), ameloblastic fibromas (AFs), ameloblastic fibro-odontomas (AFOs), and conventional ameloblastomas (AMs). STUDY DESIGN: Nine TGs, 12 AFs, 12 AFOs, and 27 AMs were evaluated for Cx43 expression by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Most of the TGs expressed Cx43 in the mesenchyme (77.6%) and in the late stages of odontogenesis. Cx43 was more highly expressed (P < .05) in the mesenchymal layer of all groups than in the epithelial layer except for the AFOs. When comparing the expression of Cx43 in the different layers of the analyzed groups, statistically significant differences were observed between AFO vs AM (*P = .0158) in the epithelial layer and between AF vs AFO (P** = .0046) in the mesenchymal layer. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained in this study showed that Cx43 is a protein with important expression in the mesenchymal layer of the embryonic and odontogenic tissues studied. It could be speculated that Cx43 participates in mineralization events based on the relationship of the expression of this protein between the epithelial and mesenchymal layers of odontogenic tissues.

The intake of high concentrations of fluoride, mainly through drinking water, diet and fluoridated dentifrices, produces fluorosis, which in its early stages is manifested as dental fluorosis (DF). To recognize exposure to fluoride in endemic areas and to evaluate the risk of developing health impairment, the WHO has established several biomarkers that are used to determine systemic fluorine (F-) exposure. Thus, the aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between the severity of DF and fluoride biomarkers in endemic areas. The protocol of this study was previously registered as CRD42021244974. A digital search was carried out in PubMed/Medline, SpringerLink, Scopus, Cochrane and Google Scholar by employing the keywords "urine", "nails", "hair", "plasma", "saliva" and "dental fluorosis" for the original studies with content associated with F- for the biomarkers and DF. The mean difference was established as the effect measure for the meta-analysis. Seven studies fulfilled the eligibility criteria, among which five assessed urine and two employed nails as fluoride biomarkers. A positive significant difference was found between the biomarkers and the severity of DF (0.27, p < 0.001) and individually for each biomarker (urine: 0.14, p = 0.001; nails: 0.88, p < 0.05). The F- concentration in urine and nails is correlated with the severity of DF, with the most evident differences between healthy individuals and those with mild severity. Both biomarkers are adequate to assess this relationship in endemic areas of fluoride and DF.

Periodontal disease (PD) and obesity are characterized by a dysregulated inflammatory state. Both conditions trigger inflammatory and immune responses with an increase in proinflammatory cytokines such as Interleukin 6 (IL-6) and the release of inflammatory mediators such as C-reactive protein (CRP). Individuals with a high body mass index (BMI) present a chronic inflammatory state. The aim of the present study was to perform a systematic review of inflammatory markers (IL-6 and CRP) in obese patients with PD and their possible relationship by analyzing the levels of these markers. A digital literature search was performed in three databases-PubMed, SciElo and Medigraphic-through an advanced search for original articles, employing IL-6 and CRP in obese patients with PD, within a publication period from 2010 to 2021. PRISMA guidelines, the JADAD scale and a qualitative analysis of scientific evidence were performed using the Cochrane collaboration method and the RoB 2 assessment tool. Ten articles were included in this analysis with the variables recorded and associated with subjects with obesity and PD. Of the ten articles included, three analyzed IL-6 and CRP, four analyzed IL-6 and three analyzed CRP. In conclusion, and based on the available evidence, the aforementioned markers of inflammation demonstrate that there is a relationship between PD and obesity.

El propóleo es un material pegajoso de color oscuro obtenido de diversas plantas y mezclado con cera, deriva de las abejas quienes lo utilizan para proteger las colmenas. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue realizar una revisión bibliográfica acerca de las propiedades y usos del propóleo en odontología. Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica de reportes publicados de marzo del 2010 a marzo del 2020 en PubMed, Imbiomed, Medigraphic, SciELO y Google Scholar usando las palabras: propóleo, propiedades, usos. Se seleccionaron 39 artículos para la revisión. Las principales propiedades reportadas fueron: antimicrobiana, antiinflamatoria, inmunomodulador y cicatrizante. Los principales usos reportados abarcaron las siguientes áreas de la odontología: prevención de caries, endodoncia, periodoncia, prostodoncia y cirugía. En los últimos años, se ha puesto especial atención a las aplicaciones del propóleo ya que se ha demostrado su eficacia en distintas áreas de la odontología.


A Própolis é um material pegajoso de cor escura obtido de várias plantas e misturado com cera, derivado de abelhas que o utilizam para proteger suas colmeias. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão bibliográfica sobre as propriedades e usos da própolis na odontologia. Uma pesquisa bibliográfica de relatórios publicados de março de 2010 a março de 2020 foi realizada na PubMed, Imbiomed, Medigraphic, SciELO e Google Scholar usando as palavras: própolis, propriedades, usos. Trinta e nove artigos foram selecionados para revisão. As principais propriedades relatadas foram: antimicrobiano, anti-inflamatório, imunomodulador e cicatrização de feridas. Os principais usos relatados cobriram as seguintes áreas da odontologia: prevenção de cárie, endodontia, periodontia, prótese dentária e cirurgia. Nos últimos anos, uma atenção especial tem sido dada às aplicações do própolis, pois sua eficácia tem sido demonstrada em diferentes áreas da odontologia.


Propolis is a dark-colored sticky material obtained from various plants and mixed with wax, derived from bees who use it to protect their hives. The aim of the present work was to carry out a literature review on the properties and uses of propolis in dentistry. A bibliographic search of reports published from March 2010 to March 2020 was performed in PubMed, Imbiomed, Medigraphic, SciELO and Google Scholar using the words: propolis, properties, uses. Thirty-nine articles were selected for review. The main properties reported were: antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and wound healing. The main reported uses covered the following areas of dentistry: caries prevention, endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics and surgery. In recent years, special attention has been given to the applications of propolis as its efficacy has been demonstrated in different areas of dentistry.

RESUMEN

Genetic factors contribute to susceptibility and resistance to fluoride exposure. The aim of this systematic review was to identify alleles/genotypes of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with dental fluorosis (DF) and to identify them as protective or risk factors. PubMed, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, Scopus and Web of Science were searched for articles; the last search was performed in August 2022. Human studies that analyzed the relationship between SNPs and DF published in English were included; systematic reviews and meta-analyses were excluded. Methodological quality was graded using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist and risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool. Eighteen articles were included, 44% of which showed high methodological quality and data from 5,625 participants aged 6 to 75 years were analyzed. The SNPs COL1A2, ESR2, DLX1, DLX2, AMBN, TUFT1, TFIP11, miRNA17, and SOD2 were considered risk factors, and ESR1, MMP20, and ENAM were considered protective factors. In conclusion, there are alleles and genotypes of different single nucleotide polymorphisms involved in increasing or decreasing the risk of developing dental fluorosis.

Symptomatic irreversible pulpitis is a painful clinical condition with a broad inflammatory component. Dental anesthesia in these patients is affected by the inflammatory process, reporting a high incidence of anesthesia failure. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analytical evaluation was to determine the effect of pre-treatment with tramadol in patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis, as well as for pain control and adverse effects. This study was registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42021279262). PubMed was consulted to identify clinical investigations comparing tramadol and placebo/local anesthetics in patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis. Data about the anesthesia, pain control, and adverse effects were extracted. Both the anesthetic success index and the adverse effects of local tramadol and placebo were compared with the Mantel−Haenszel test and odds ratio. Data analysis showed that the local administration of tramadol increased the anesthetic success rate when compared to placebo in patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (n = 228; I2 = 0; OR = 2.2; 95% CIs: 1.30 to 3.79; p < 0.004). However, local administration of tramadol increased the risk of adverse effects when compared to placebo/local anesthetics (n = 288; I2 = 0; OR = 7.72; 95% CIs: 1.37 to 43.46; p < 0.02). In conclusion, this study shows that the local administration of tramadol increases the anesthetic success index when compared to placebo in patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis.

Introduction: Knowledge of the oral manifestations associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, the new coronavirus causing the COVID-19 pandemic, was hindered due to the restrictions issued to avoid proximity between people and to stop the rapid spread of the disease, which ultimately results in a hyperinflammatory cytokine storm that can cause death. Because periodontal disease is one of the most frequent inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity, various theories have emerged postulating periodontal disease as a risk factor for developing severe complications associated with COVID-19. This motivated various studies to integrate questions related to periodontal status. For the present work, we used a previously validated self-report, which is a useful tool for facilitating epidemiological studies of periodontal disease on a large scale. Methodology: A blinded case-control study with participants matched 1:1 by mean age (37.7 years), sex, tobacco habits and diseases was conducted. After the diagnostic samples for SARS-CoV-2 detection were taken in an ad hoc location at Guadalajara University, the subjects were interviewed using structured questionnaires to gather demographic, epidemiological and COVID-19 symptom information. The self-reported periodontal disease (Self-RPD) questionnaire included six questions, and subjects who met the criteria with a score ≥ 2 were considered to have periodontal disease. Results: In total, 369 participants were recruited, with 117 participants included in each group. After indicating the subjects who had self-reported periodontal disease, a statistically significant difference (p value ≤ 0.001) was observed, showing that self-reported periodontal disease (n = 95, 85.1%) was higher in SARS-CoV-2-positive individuals than in controls (n = 66, 56.4%), with an OR of 3.3 (1.8-6.0) for SARS-CoV-2 infection in people with self-reported periodontal disease. Cases reported a statistically higher median of symptoms (median = 7.0, Q1= 5.5, Q3 = 10.0) than controls (p value ≤ 0.01), and cases with positive self-RPD had a significantly (p value ≤ 0.05) higher number of symptoms (median = 8.0, Q1 = 6.0, Q3 = 10.0) in comparison with those who did negative self-RPD (median = 6.0, Q1 = 5.0, Q3 = 8.0). Conclusions: According to this study, self-reported periodontal disease could be considered a risk factor for SARS-CoV-2 infection, and these individuals present more symptoms.

Inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) has a high failure rate in subjects with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (SIP). It has been suggested that drugs with anti-inflammatory activity could improve the efficacy of the anesthetic used for IANB. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of dexamethasone on the success of dental anesthesia in patients with SIP. An information search was performed using PubMed and Google Scholar. The risk of bias of the included studies was evaluated with the Cochrane Collaboration's risk-of-bias tool. The anesthetic success rate, pain intensity (VAS), and adverse effects were extracted. Data were analyzed using the Mantel−Haenszel test and odds ratio or the inverse variance and standardized mean difference. Dexamethasone increased the anesthetic success in comparison with placebo (n = 502; p < 0.001; OR = 2.59; 95% CIs: 1.46 to 4.59). Moreover, patients who were given dexamethasone had lower pain scores at 6 h (n = 302; p < 0.001; MD= −1.43; 95% CIs: −2.28 to −0.58), 12 h (n = 302; p < 0.0001; MD = −1.65; 95% CIs: −2.39 to −0.92), and 24 h (n = 302; p < 0.0008; MD = −1.27; 95% CIs: −2.01 to −0.53) when compared with placebo. In conclusion, the systemic administration of dexamethasone increases the anesthetic success rate and improves pain management in patients with SIP.

The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the efficacy of methylprednisolone compared to other drugs to control postoperative complications following third molar surgery. PubMed and Google Scholar were used for article searching. Thereafter, the trials meeting the selection criteria and with high methodological quality, according to the Cochrane Collaboration's risk of bias tool, were included in this study. The inverse variance test and mean difference using the Review Manager Software 5.3 for Windows were used to carry out data analysis. Qualitative analysis shows that methylprednisolone is more effective than NSAIDs, but inferior to dexamethasone, for controlling postoperative complications after third molar removal. The quantitative analysis showed no statistical difference for pain control, while trismus evaluation showed a statistical difference after 7 postoperative days in favor of methylprednisolone, when compared to other drugs. In conclusion, methylprednisolone was more effective for trismus control compared to other drugs after lower third molar surgery.

The amount of fluoride in water in some regions of Mexico represents a public health problem. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of original studies that report fluoride levels in tap and bottled water from the northern and western regions of Mexico. A systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA method in PubMed, Scopus, Medigraphic and Scielo databases. The keywords fluoride OR fluorosis AND water AND Mexico were used for the search and the records found were included and excluded according to the previous established criteria. We reviewed data in articles published between January 1st, 2010 and March 30th, 2021. We identified a total of 36 records. Most showed data found in the western region (n = 23), while the rest reported data found in the north. Both regions reported maximum and mean sample ranges above those suggested by the World Health Organization and national regulations. According to the analyzed data, in Mexico, the northern and western regions of the country show a concerning situation due to the high levels of fluoride reported by many authors in tap and bottled water. Almost all authors reported data above those recommended for national and international regulations, which represent an important public health problem that requires attention.


La cantidad de fluoruros en el agua en algunas regiones de México representa un problema de salud pública. El objetivo de este trabajo fue realizar una revisión sistemática de estudios originales que reportaran niveles de fluoruros en agua corriente y embotellada de la región norte y occidente de México. Esta revisión sistemática se elaboró utilizando el sistema PRISMA en las bases de datos de PubMed, Scopus, Medigraphic y Scielo. De acuerdo con los estudios aquí analizados en México, las regiones Norte y Occidente del país muestran una situación preocupante por los elevados niveles de fluoruros que reportan los autores en agua corriente y embotellada, los niveles se encuentran casi en su totalidad por encima de los recomendados a nivel nacional e internacional lo cual significa un problema de salud pública que requiere de atención.

Introducción: El hueso, reservorio de minerales y moléculas orgánicas, es un tejido dinámico que detecta y se adapta a las cargas mecánicas de los órganos y tejidos del cuerpo, el cual mantiene la estructura ósea del esqueleto durante el crecimiento y a través de la vida del ser humano. Las células óseas son sensibles a las cargas mecánicas y microvibra- ciones que recibe el esqueleto. Objetivo: El propósito de este estudio fue realizar una revisión sistemática acerca de los efectos que ejerce la microvibración de alta frecuencia-baja intensidad, en osteocitos cultivados in vitro sobre la síntesis de factores solubles, con el propósito de entender si la microvibración tiene influencia en la aceleración del movimiento dentario. Material y métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda de artículos de revisión de osteocitos y otras células óseas in vitro, a través de la estrategia PICO (Paciente, Intervención, Comparación, Resultado [Outcome]), con el empleo de palabras clave como: «os- teocitos¼, «microvibración¼, «remodelación¼, «osteoclastogénesis¼, «citocinas¼ y «osteoblastos¼. Se estructuró por medio de PRISMA (informe de revisiones sistemáticas y meta-análisis). La captación de datos finales se hizo por medio del método de puntuación de calidad Jadad y Cochrane (modelo de correlación) como herramientas para evaluar el riesgo de sesgo de cada uno de los artículos. Se incluyeron 11 artículos con alta calidad metodológica. Resultados: La mayoría de los experimentos in vitro demostraron que la microvibración tuvo un aumento estadísticamente significativo en la proliferación y dife- renciación de las células madre mesenquimales (MSC), en osteoblastos (MC3T3-E1), en la expresión de proteínas para inducir osteogénesis y en los osteocitos (MLO-Y4). Asimismo, sobrerregularon la expresión de osteoprotegerina (OPG), prostaglandina (PGE2) y óxido nitroso (NO) al alterar y regular los factores solubles como las citocinas, factores de crecimiento y quimiocinas, de las demás células, además de mostrar una disminución en la actividad de los osteoclastos (RAW246.7) en la resorción ósea. Conclusión: La microvibración induce remodelación ósea. Los osteocitos son sensibles a los estímulos mecánicos y producen factores solubles para inducir la remodelación ósea, razón por la cual se emplea la microvibración como una terapia innovadora y prometedora, no invasiva y no farmacológica en la estimulación de la formación ósea de la superficie del hueso (AU)
