RESUMEN

The residual intake and gain (RIG) aims to select animals that present low feed intake in relation to the expected. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of selection for RIG with performance and carcass traits in Nellore cattle. Initially, residual feed intake (RFI) and residual gain (RG) were determined. From this, the RIG was calculated, and the animals were classified as efficient and inefficient for RIG. The efficient animals for RIG showed higher daily weight gain (DWG), Longissimus muscle area (LMA), and mid-test metabolic body weight (MMBW) than the inefficient ones. No significant correlations were found between subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), marbling (MAR), LMA, MMBW, and the RIG. Thus, it's concluded that the RIG is a measure that can be used to identify and select animals with higher rates of DWG and LMA without changes in the dry matter intake (DMI), SFT, and MAR. However, this index should still be observed with caution, as it may be dependent on body size. Based on the findings, the selection of animals according to the RIG can be an important factor to generate phenotypic evolution in characteristics such as weight gain and rib eye area without adverse effects on the carcass fat deposition.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of retained placenta (RP) and clinical mastitis (CM) on the reproductive efficiency of crossbred dairy cows during the postpartum period and the effect in some innate immune system indicators. For this, two experiments were carried out. In the first, a total of 232 cows were evaluated and divided as: healthy control (n = 184), RP (n = 22), and CM (n = 26) groups. The RP and CM was evaluated until 30 days postpartum (DPP) and reproductive rates were measured. In experiment 2, cows were divided in control (n = 10), RP (n = 10), and CM (n = 30) groups. Between 40 and 50 DPP, clinical, gynecological examination and endometrial cytobrush were performed to evaluate subclinical endometritis (SE) and gene expression of interleukins 1ß (IL-1ß) and 6 (IL-6), chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5), estrogen α (ESR1), and progesterone (PGR) receptors by qRT-PCR analysis. In experiment 1, the conception rate at 1st artificial insemination (AI) was lower in RP and CM groups and pregnancy rate at 150 days decreased in CM group. Calving-to-1st AI interval and days open were shorter in healthy cows. In experiment 2, the occurrence of SE was 26.7% and higher in RP and CM groups. The expression of IL-1ß increased in RP and CM groups, while IL-6 was less expressed in RP group. The CCL5, ESR1, and PGR were similar between groups. In conclusion, cows with RP and CM had their reproductive efficiency negatively affected and had they initial pro-inflammatory response improved by the increase of IL-ß.

Cryopreservation and transplantation of ovarian tissue are proposed methods for the restoration of endocrine function and reproductive potential. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of vitrification and xenotransplantation on follicle viability, activation, stromal cell integrity, vascularization, and micronuclei formation. Bovine fetal ovaries were fragmented and assigned to the following groups: Fresh control (FC), ovarian fragments immediately fixed; Vitrified control (VC), ovarian fragments vitrified; Vitrified xenotransplanted (VX), ovarian fragments vitrified and xenotransplanted; and Fresh xenotransplanted (FX), ovarian fragments xenotransplanted. Ovarian fragments were grafted in female BALB/c mice and recovered after 14 days. Follicular viability was preserved (P > 0.05) in VC group. The rate of developing follicles was greater (P < 0.05) in the FX group compared to other groups. Follicular density was higher (P < 0.05) in the VC group than the FC, VX, and FX groups. A decrease (P < 0.05) of stromal cell density was recorded after vitrification (VC vs. FX). Blood vessel density decreased in VC, VX, and FX groups compared with the FC group, and blood vessel density was correlated with follicular viability (positively; P = 0.07) and developing follicles (negatively; P < 0.001). Both vitrification and xenotransplantation groups (VC, VX, and FX) had a greater (P < 0.05) number of cells with one MN compared to the FC group. In summary, our findings showed that both vitrification and xenotransplantation modified blood vessel, follicular and stromal cell densities, follicular viability and activation, and micronuclei formation in ovarian tissue.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of clinical mastitis (CM) occurring before or after the first AI postpartum, and puerperal diseases (PD) on the pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI), number of AI/conception, and days open (DO) of two different dairy herds (Girolando and Holstein). The CM, PD (retained placenta and metritis), and reproductive data were collected from two dairy farms throughout 1 year. Both farms were located in the southern region of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. One herd was composed of Girolando cows and the other of Holstein cows. Cows were inseminated after estrus detection or submitted to timed AI. Only CM cases (clots in milk accompanied or not by udder inflammation) that occurred before or after first AI postpartum (from calving until 35 days after the first AI) were considered. There were no effects of CM, PD, or both diseases on the reproductive efficiency of the Girolando herd. In the Holstein herd, a reduce P/AI and prolonged DO were verified for those affected by ≥ 2 CM cases. Holstein cows with CM also required more inseminations to become pregnant. A decrease in the P/AI and an increase in the number of AI/conception and DO were observed in cows of the Holstein herd that developed only CM, only PD, and for those diagnosed with both diseases. In summary, considering that some management differences exist between the two dairy farms, CM occurrence (before or after the first AI postpartum) and puerperal diseases negatively affected the reproductive efficiency of the Holstein herd. However, these diseases did not compromise the reproductive efficiency of the Girolando herd.

The objectives were to conduct a genetic evaluation of residual feed intake (RFI) and residual feed intake adjusted for fat (RFIFat) and to analyse the effect of selection for these traits on growth, carcass and reproductive traits. Data from 945 Nellore bulls in seven feed efficiency tests in a feedlot were analysed. Genetic evaluation was performed using an animal model in which the feed efficiency test and age of the animal at the beginning of the test were considered as a systematic effect. Direct additive genetic and residual effects were considered as random effects. Correlations and genetic gains were estimated by two-trait analysis between feed efficiency measures (RFI and RFIFat) and other traits. Feed conversion showed low heritability (0.06), but dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain, RFI, RFIFat, metabolic body weight and scrotal circumference measured at 450 days of age (SC450) showed moderate to high heritability (0.49, 0.28, 0.33, 0.36, 0.38 and 0.80, respectively). Similarly, ribeye area, backfat thickness, rump cap fat thickness, marbling score and subcutaneous fat thickness also had high heritability values (0.46, 0.37, 0.57, 0.51 and 0.47, respectively). Genetic correlations between RFI and SC450 were null, and between RFIFat and SC450 were strongly positive. Genetic and phenotypic correlations of RFI and RFIFat with carcass traits were not different from zero, as correlated responses for carcass traits were also not different from zero. The Nellore selection for feed efficiency by RFI or RFIFat allows the recognition of feed efficient animals, with DMI reduction and without significant changes in growth and carcass traits. However, because of the observed results between RFIFat and SC450, selection of animals should be analysed with caution and a preselection for reproductive traits is necessary to avoid reproductive impairments in the herd.

ABSTRACT: The study of the genetic evaluation of residual feed intake adjusted for fat (RFIFat) is important for the appropriate use of feed efficiency in selection programs. The objective was to analyze the influence of selection for RFIF at on carcass and performance traits by estimating various genetic parameters. Data were analyzed from five tests of feed efficiency, which were conducted with 677 Nellore males. Genetic evaluation was performed by Bayesian inference using an animal model via single- and two-trait analyses. Variables analyzed were dry matter intake, average daily gain, RFIFat, rib eye area, back fat thickness, rump fat thickness, marbling score, and subcutaneous fat thickness. The posterior mean distributions estimated at each analysis were used to estimate heritability of the traits and to perform various correlations. The studied traits showed high heritability estimates, and they should respond well to selection. The RFIFat presented a phenotypic correlation with carcass traits (which was next to zero), and there was also a negative genetic correlation. Additive genetic variability for RFIFat showed that selection for this trait can promote genetic gains in future generations, resulting in animals that are efficient in terms of nutrient use, and according to the genetic and phenotypic correlations, with no significant negative changes to carcass traits.


RESUMO: O estudo da avaliação genética do consumo alimentar residual ajustado para a gordura (CARFat) é importante para o uso apropriado da eficiência alimentar em programas de seleção. Objetivou-se analisar a influência da seleção para CARFat sobre características de carcaça e de desempenho, frente à estimação dos parâmetros genéticos. Foram analisados os dados de cinco provas de eficiência alimentar, com 677 machos Nelore. A avaliação genética foi realizada por Inferência Bayesiana, com modelo animal, em análises uni e bicaracterística. Foram analisadas as variáveis: ingestão de matéria seca, ganho de peso diário, CARFat, área de olho de lombo, espessura de gordura, espessura de gordura subcutânea na picanha, marmoreio e acabamento. As médias das distribuições a posteriori, estimadas em cada uma das análises, foram usadas para a estimação das herdabilidades e das correlações. As características estudadas apresentaram altas estimativas de herdabilidades, devendo responder bem à seleção. O CARFat apresentou correlações fenotípicas próximas a zero com as características de carcaça, e correlações genéticas negativas. A variabilidade genética aditiva observada para CARFat demonstra que a seleção para essa característica poderá promover ganhos genéticos nas futuras gerações, obtendo animais eficientes na utilização de alimentos e, de acordo com as correlações genéticas e fenotípicas encontradas, sem mudanças negativas significativas às características da carcaça.
