RESUMEN

Twisted bilayer graphene is a fascinating system due to the possibility of tuning the electronic and optical properties by controlling the twisting angle [Formula: see text] between the layers. The coupling between the Dirac cones of the two graphene layers gives rise to van Hove singularities (vHs) in the density of electronic states, whose energies vary with [Formula: see text]. Raman spectroscopy is a fundamental tool to study twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) systems since the Raman response is hugely enhanced when the photons are in resonance with transition between vHs and new peaks appear in the Raman spectra due to phonons within the interior of the Brillouin zone of graphene that are activated by the Moiré superlattice. It was recently shown that these new peaks can be activated by the intralayer and the interlayer electron-phonon processes. In this work we study how each one of these processes enhances the intensities of the peaks coming from the acoustic and optical phonon branches of graphene. Resonance Raman measurements, performed in many different TBG samples with [Formula: see text] between [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] and using several different laser excitation energies in the near-infrared (NIR) and visible ranges (1.39-2.71 eV), reveal the distinct enhancement of the different phonons of graphene by the intralayer and interlayer processes. Experimental results are nicely explained by theoretical calculations of the double-resonance Raman intensity in graphene by imposing the momentum conservation rules for the intralayer and the interlayer electron-phonon resonant conditions in TBGs. Our results show that the resonant enhancement of the Raman response in all cases is affected by the quantum interference effect and the symmetry requirements of the double resonance Raman process in graphene.

OBJECTIVES: Contact tracing and quarantine are common measures used in the management of infectious disease outbreaks. However, few studies have measured their impact on the control of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of those measures on reducing transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in a community setting. STUDY DESIGN: The study design is a retrospective cohort study. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of COVID-19 cases notified in Eastern Porto from March 1st to April 30th, 2020 was performed. Intervention and control cohorts were defined based on whether cases were subjected to contact tracing and quarantine measures before the laboratory confirmation of disease. The number of secondary cases per index case and the proportion of cases with subsequent secondary cases were the primary outcomes. Secondary outcomes included the time from symptom onset to specimen collection and the number of close contacts. The analysis was stratified according to whether national lockdown measures had already been implemented. RESULTS: The intervention and control cohorts comprised 98 and 453 cases, respectively. No differences were observed concerning primary outcomes. The intervention group had a shorter time between symptom onset and specimen collection (median: 3 days, interquartile range [IQR]: 1-6, vs. median: 5 days, IQR: 2-7, P-value = 0.004) and fewer close contacts (median: 0, IQR: 0-2, vs. median: 2, IQR: 1-4, P-value<0.001). The stratified analysis returned similar results. CONCLUSION: Local public health measures were effective in reducing the time between symptom onset and laboratory diagnosis and the number of close contacts per case. No effect was apparent on secondary case figures, suggesting that further measures may be required.

The understanding of interactions between electrons and phonons in atomically thin heterostructures is crucial for the engineering of novel two-dimensional devices. Electron-phonon (el-ph) interactions in layered materials can occur involving electrons in the same layer or in different layers. Here we report on the possibility of distinguishing intralayer and interlayer el-ph interactions in samples of twisted bilayer graphene and of probing the intralayer process in graphene/h-BN by using Raman spectroscopy. In the intralayer process, the el-ph scattering occurs in a single graphene layer and the other layer (graphene or h-BN) imposes a periodic potential that backscatters the excited electron, whereas for the interlayer process the el-ph scattering occurs between states in the Dirac cones of adjacent graphene layers. Our methodology of using Raman spectroscopy to probe different types of el-ph interactions can be extended to study any kind of graphene-based heterostructure.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer remains a leading cause of death by cancer worldwide. It is commonly accepted that angiogenesis and the expression of angiogenic factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) is associated with the increased risk of metastasis and poor patient outcome. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to evaluate the effects of long-term exercise training on the growth and vascularization of mammary tumors in a rat model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: two N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU)-exposed groups (exercised and sedentary) and two control groups (exercised and sedentary). MNU was administered once, intraperitoneally at 7 weeks-old. Animals were then exercised on a treadmill for 35 weeks. Mammary tumors were evaluated using thermography, ultrasonography [Power Doppler (PDI), B Flow and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS)], and immunohistochemistry (VEGF-A). RESULTS: Both, MNU sedentary and exercised groups showed 100% of tumor incidence, but exercised animals showed less tumors with an increased latency period. Exercise training also enhanced VEGF-A immunoexpression and vascularization (microvessel density, MVD) (p<0.05), and reduced histological aggressiveness. Ultrasound and thermal imaging analysis confirmed the enhanced vascularization of tumors on exercised animals. CONCLUSION: Long-term exercise training increased VEGF-A expression, leading to enhanced tumor vascularization and reduced tumor burden, multiplicity and histological aggressiveness.

The development of new ophthalmic drug delivery systems capable of increasing the residence time of drugs in the eye and improve its bioavailability relatively to eyedrops has been object of intense research in recent years. Several studies have shown that drug-loaded therapeutic soft contact lenses (SCLs) constitute a promising approach, with several potential advantages as compared with collyria. The main objective of this work is to study the effect of repetitive load and friction cycles caused by the eye blinking, on the drug release from hydrogels used in SCLs which, as far as we know, was never investigated before. Two poly-2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate-based hydrogels, pHEMA-T and pHEMA-UV, were used as model materials. Levofloxaxin was chosen as model drug. The hydrogels were fully characterized in what concerns structural and physicochemical properties. pHEMA-UV revealed some superficial porosity and a lower short-range order than pHEMA-T. We observe that the load and friction cycles enhanced the drug release from pHEMA-UV hydrogels. The application of a simple mathematical model, which takes into account the drug dilution caused by the tear flow, showed that the enhancement of the drug release caused by blinking on this hydrogel may be relevant in in vivo conditions. Conversely, the more sustained drug release from pHEMA-T is not affected by load and friction cycles. The conclusion is that, depending on the physicochemical and microstructural characteristics of the hydrogels, blinking is a factor that may affect the amount of drug delivered to the eye by SCLs and should thus be considered.

We present a Raman study of Ar(+)-bombarded graphene samples with increasing ion doses. This allows us to have a controlled, increasing, amount of defects. We find that the ratio between the D and G peak intensities, for a given defect density, strongly depends on the laser excitation energy. We quantify this effect and present a simple equation for the determination of the point defect density in graphene via Raman spectroscopy for any visible excitation energy. We note that, for all excitations, the D to G intensity ratio reaches a maximum for an interdefect distance ∼3 nm. Thus, a given ratio could correspond to two different defect densities, above or below the maximum. The analysis of the G peak width and its dispersion with excitation energy solves this ambiguity.

Checkpoint kinase 2 (Chk2) is a cell-cycle-checkpoint kinase that may act as a tumor suppressor gene due to its important role in DNA damage signaling and cell cycle regulation. The role of Chk2 expression in mammary tumorigenesis, however, is still poorly understood. This study was designed to assess the relationship between the expression of Chk2 and well-established prognostic factors, including disease-free-survival and overall survival; and several regulators of cell proliferation and invasiveness in breast carcinomas, including oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, apoptosis-related proteins, and angiogenesis-related markers. Immunohistochemistry with 27 primary antibodies was performed in 100 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples of not otherwise specified invasive ductal carcinomas. Clinical data were retrieved from medical files. In normal mammary parenchyma adjacent to the tumors Chk2 stained the nuclei of epithelial cells. Downexpression of Chk2 protein was observed in 23 carcinomas and correlated with advanced disease. Among the regulators of tumor cell proliferation and invasiveness analyzed, the downexpression of Chk2 correlated only with reduced expression of p27 and telomerase. There was no difference between the overall survival and disease-free survival rates according to Chk2 status. In conclusion, Chk2 correlated with reduced expression of h-TERT and p27, but not with angiogenic factors. Chk2 expression also did not interfere in the outcome of the patients.

A 7-month-old girl succumbed to respiratory failure following exposure to high-density mercury vapor produced by heating of the metal in the home. Her course typified inhalation mercury toxic reaction, which in its focus on pulmonary damage creates a clinical picture distinct from that of chronic and oral mercury poisoning.
