RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate qualitative and quantitative differences in vascular density analysis of an established and a novel alternative for post-processing on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) images in healthy individuals. OCTA examinations of 38 subjects were performed. After extracting the images, two semi-manual post-processing techniques, the already established Mexican hat filtering (MHF) and an alternative, the Shanbhag thresholding (ST) were applied. We assessed Vessel Density (VD), Skeleton Density (SkD) and Vessel Diameter Index (VDI). We analyzed the results in order to establish similarities or potentially relevant differences. Regarding SkD and VD, MHF generally gave higher values than ST. Simultaneously, mean values were also predominantly higher by MHF; however, standard deviations (SD) were higher by ST (range [mean ± SD]: 0.054 ± 0.038 to 0.134 ± 0.01 and 0.134 ± 0.095 to 0.362 ± 0.028 vs 0.012 ± 0.014 to 0.087 ± 0.03 and 0.039 ± 0.047 to 0.4 ± 0.095 for SkD and VD with MHF vs SkD and VD with ST, respectively). Values of VDI were considerably higher with ST than with MHF, while standard deviation was still significantly higher with ST (range [mean ± SD]: 2.459 ± 0.144 to 2.71 ± 0.084 and 2.983 ± 0.929 to 5.19 ± 1.064 for VDI with MHF and ST, respectively). The noise level reduction of the two methods were almost identical (noise levels: 65.8% with MHT and 65.24% with ST). Using MHF, the vascular network gets more fragmented by an average of 40% compared to ST. Both methods allow the segmentation of the vascular network and the examination of vascular density parameters, but they produce largely inconsistent results. To determine if these inconsistent results are clinically meaningful, and which method is more suitable for clinical use, our results provide further evidence that detailed understanding of the image analysis method is essential for reliable decision making for patients with retinal pathology. For longitudinal monitoring, use of the same image processing method is recommended.

Purpose: To evaluate color vision changes and retinal processing of chromatic and luminance pathways in subjects with Alzheimer disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) compared with a matched control group and whether such changes are associated with impaired brain glucose metabolism and ß-amyloid deposition in the brain. Methods: We evaluated 13 patients with AD (72.4 ± 7.7 years), 23 patients with MCI (72.5 ± 5.5 years), and 18 controls of comparable age (P = 0.44) using Cambridge color test and the heterochromatic flicker ERG (HF-ERG). The Cambridge color test was performed using the trivector protocol to estimate the protan, deutan and tritan color confusion axes. HF-ERG responses were measured at a frequency of 12 Hz, which ERGs reflect chromatic activity, and at 36 Hz, reflecting luminance pathway. A study subsample was performed using neuropsychological assessments and positron emission tomography. Results: Patients with AD presented higher mean values indicating poorer color discrimination for protan (P = 0.04) and deutan (P = 0.001) axes compared with the controls. Along the tritan axis, both patients with AD and patients with MCI showed decreased color vision (P = 0.001 and P = 0.001) compared with controls. The analyses from the HF-ERG protocol revealed no differences between the groups (P = 0.31 and P = 0.41). Diffuse color vision loss was found in individuals with signs of neurodegeneration (protan P = 0.002, deutan P = 0.003 and tritan P = 0.01), but not in individuals with signs of ß-amyloid deposition only (protan P = 0.39, deutan P = 0.48, tritan P = 0.63), regardless of their clinical classification. Conclusions: Here, patients with AD and patients with MCI present acquired color vision deficiency that may be linked with impaired brain metabolism.

PURPOSE: Human oscillatory potentials (OPs) are derived from dark-adapted (DA) electroretinograms (ERGs) with fixed frequency cutoff filters while light-adapted (LA) OPs are generally not isolated from ERGs. Our purpose was to analyze the effect of cutoff frequencies on DA and LA ERG components using a series of fixed and variable filters. METHODS: DA and LA ERGs were recorded from 10 healthy eyes of 10 subjects (mean age = 20.5 ± 6.7 years) following ISCEV standards. Each signal was filtered in the Fourier domain to acquire slow (a- and b-waves; below cutoff frequency) and fast (OPs; above cutoff frequency) components. Fixed cutoff frequencies ranged from 60 to 105 Hz and a variable cutoff frequency was calculated. Results were analyzed with statistical tests and specific models. RESULTS: DA ERG components were slightly influenced by the filter cutoff frequency. In contrast, fixed and variable filters significantly changed LA components: the lower the cutoff frequency the smaller the b-wave and OP3 and the higher the OP2/OP4 amplitudes. Analyzing the filter frequency limits a transition range between 68.9 Hz and 83.9 Hz was observed where amplitudes vary. CONCLUSIONS: The present report shows that DA OPs may be isolated from ERGs using filtering procedures with high-pass cutoff frequency at about 75 Hz as recommended by ISCEV. On the other hand, the spectral distribution of low-frequency and high-frequency LA ERG components may overlap. Accordingly, filtering the signal using different cutoff frequencies is not necessarily separating b-wave and OPs.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to characterize changes in the full-field flash electroretinogram (ERG) in association with psychophysical dark-adapted visual thresholds in patients with genetically characterized Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) either lacking Dp427 (Up 30) or at least Dp260 in addition to Dp427 (Down 30). Methods: Twenty-one patients with DMD and 27 age-similar controls participated in this study. Dark-adapted (0.01, 3.0, and 10 cd.s/m² flashes) and light-adapted (3.0 cd.s/m² flash) ERGs were recorded following International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV) standard protocols. Visual detection thresholds to 625-nm (cone function) and 527-nm (rod function) light-emitting diode (LED) flashes (2 degree diameter) were measured during a dark adaptation period after a 1-minute exposure to a bleaching light (3000 cd/m²). Initially, 8 minutes of interleaved 625-nm and 527-nm thresholds were measured. After an additional 5 minutes of dark-adaptation, a second set of threshold measurements to 527-nm stimuli was performed during the subsequent 6 minutes. Results: Dark-adapted b-wave amplitude was significantly reduced to all strengths of flash and a-wave in response to the strong flash stimulus was delayed (15.6 vs. 14.7 ms, P < 0.05) in patients with Down 30 compared with controls. Dark-adapted cone thresholds did not differ among the groups (-2.0, -1.8, and -1.7 log cd/m² for Down 30, Up 30, and controls, respectively, P = 0.21). In contrast, dark-adapted rod thresholds were elevated (F(2,36) = 8.537, P = 0.001) in patients with Down 30 (mean = -3.2 ± 1.1 log cd/m²) relative to controls (mean = -4.2 ± 0.3 log cd/m²). Dark-adapted b-wave amplitudes were correlated with dark-adapted rod sensitivity in patients with DMD (Spearman Rho = 0.943, P = 0.005). The changes were much smaller or absent in patients with intact Dp260. Conclusions: Dp260 is particularly required for normal rod-system function in dark adaptation.

PURPOSE: To review studies focusing on cilioretinal arteries (CLRA) in order to assess the overall prevalence and establish the prevalence of CLRA in a Hungarian Caucasian population. METHODS #1: Systematic literature review of published studies with at least 100 participants. METHODS #2: Non-mydriatic digital colour photographs were taken of 1000 consecutively enrolled healthy Caucasian young adult volunteers. Images were graded by two trained independent observers. Number and location of identified cilioretinal arteries were recorded and statistically analysed. RESULTS #1: Prevalence of CLRA ranges from 6.9% to 49.5%. Detection with fluorescein angiography yields the highest values followed by fundus photography and ophthalmoscopy. Unilateral presence of CLRA is between 70.30% and 93.65%, and temporal location is between 80.77% and 100%. RESULTS #2: We found at least one CLRA in 36.5% of the participants and in 22.75% of all the examined eyes. Cilioretinal arteries (CLRA) were unilateral in 75.34% and bilateral in 24.66%. Of all the identified CLRA, 96.16% were originating from the temporal rim of the optic disc. We identified at least one temporal CLRA supplying the macula in 28% of the participants and 16.95% of the examined eyes. CONCLUSION: Prevalence of CLRA varies depending on identification method. Unilateral presence is unequivocally more frequent similarly to temporal location. From a risk of bias standpoint, high-quality studies are rare. Our data on the distribution pattern of CLRA are similar to that in the international literature. Based on our findings, we assume that slightly more than one-third of the Hungarian Caucasian population has a CLRA.

Retinal and cortical signals initiated by a single cone type can be recorded using the spectral compensation (or silent substitution) paradigm. Moreover, responses to instantaneous excitation increments combined with gradual excitation decreases are dominated by the response to the excitation increment. Similarly, the response to a sudden excitation decrement dominates the overall response when combined with a gradual excitation increase. Here ERGs and VEPs were recorded from 34 volunteers [25.9 ±â€¯10.4 years old (mean ±â€¯1 SD); 25 males, 9 females] to sawtooth flicker (4 Hz) stimuli that elicited L- or M-cone responses using triple silent substitution. The mean luminance (284 cd/m2) and the mean chromaticity (x = 0.5686, y = 0.3716; CIE 1931 color space) remained constant and thus the state of adaptation was the same in all conditions. Color discrimination thresholds along protan, deutan, and tritan axes were obtained from all participants. Dichromatic subjects were genetically characterized by molecular analysis of their opsin genes. ERG responses to L-cone stimuli were absent in protanopes whereas ERG responses to M-cone stimuli were strongly reduced in deuteranopes. Dichromats showed generally reduced VEP amplitudes. Responses to cone-specific stimuli obtained with standard electrophysiological methods may give the same classification as that obtained with the Cambridge Colour Test and in some cases with the genetic analysis of the L- and M-opsin genes. Therefore, cone-specific ERGs and VEPs may be reliable methods to detect cone dysfunction. The present data confirm and emphasize the potential use of cone-specific stimulation, combined with standard visual electrodiagnostic protocols.

Biofeedback training has been used to improve fixation stability in subjects with central vision loss, but the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying the functional improvements resulted was not reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of microperimetric biofeedback training on different visual functions and self-reported quality of vision in subjects with age-related macular degeneration. This case-control study included six subjects (72.0 ± 6.1 years of age) diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (wet or dry) with low vision (best corrected visual acuity ranging from 0.5 to 0.1 in the study eye) and five healthy volunteers (64.2 ± 3.7 years of age). Ophthalmological and functional examinations were obtained from all subjects twice with an approximately 3-month interval. Subjects with central vision loss performed 12 sessions (10 min each) of biofeedback training between the two examinations. Functional evaluation included: microperimetry, spatial luminance contrast sensitivities, color vision thresholds, visual acuity, and reading speed. Visual performance during daily activities was also assessed using a standardized questionnaire. The ratio (2nd/1st examination) of the spatial luminance contrast sensitivity at lower spatial frequencies were much higher for the training subjects compared with the controls. In addition, self-reported quality of vision improved after the training. The significant improvement of the visual function such as spatial luminance contrast sensitivity may explain the better self-reported quality of vision. Possible structural and physiological mechanisms underlying this neuromodulation are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Pigmented and albino rabbits are commonly used in visual research; however, the lack of pigment in the eyes may affect retinal responses. Here, we compare and describe the differences of retinal function between pigmented (English Butterfly) and albino (New Zealand) rabbits. METHODS: Electroretinograms were recorded in pigmented and albino rabbits in the dark-adapted eye, in the light-adapted eye and for four temporal frequencies in the light-adapted eye. The implicit time and amplitude of the a- and b-waves were analyzed, as well as the amplitude and phase of the first harmonic component of the photopic flicker response. RESULTS: Albino rabbits presented significantly larger amplitudes for both a- and b-waves at all intensities and frequencies. The intensity-response function of the scotopic b-wave also showed that the albino retina is more sensitive than the pigmented retina and the larger flicker amplitudes found in the albino group also revealed post-receptoral changes specifically related to cone pathways. CONCLUSIONS: The larger amplitude of albino receptoral and post-receptoral activities might be attributed to greater availability of light due to scatter and reflection at the retinal layer, and as the differences in response amplitudes between the groups increase with flicker frequency, we suggest that ON bipolar cells recover faster in the albino group, suggesting that this might be a mechanism to explain the higher temporal resolution for albinos compared to the pigmented group.

Purpose: Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) causes sleep disturbance that is related to an abnormal melatonin profile. It is not clear how the genomic disorder leads to a disturbed synchronization of the sleep/wake rhythm in SMS patients. To evaluate the integrity of the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cell (ipRGC)/melanopsin system, the transducers of the light-inhibitory effect on pineal melatonin synthesis, we recorded pupillary light responses (PLR) in SMS patients. Methods: Subjects were SMS patients (n = 5), with molecular diagnosis and melatonin levels measured for 24 hours and healthy controls (n = 4). Visual stimuli were 1-second red light flashes (640 nm; insignificant direct ipRGC activation), followed by a 470-nm blue light, near the melanopsin peak absorption region (direct ipRGC activation). Blue flashes produce a sustained pupillary constriction (ipRGC driven) followed by baseline return, while red flashes produce faster recovery. Results: Pupillary light responses to 640-nm red flash were normal in SMS patients. In response to 470-nm blue flash, SMS patients had altered sustained responses shown by faster recovery to baseline. SMS patients showed impairment in the expected melatonin production suppression during the day, confirming previous reports. Conclusions: SMS patients show dysfunction in the sustained component of the PLR to blue light. It could explain their well-known abnormal melatonin profile and elevated circulating melatonin levels during the day. Synchronization of daily melatonin profile and its photoinhibition are dependent on the activation of melanopsin. This retinal dysfunction might be related to a deficit in melanopsin-based photoreception, but a deficit in rod function is also possible.

L and M cones send their signals to the cortex using two chromatic (parvocellular and blue-yellow koniocellular) and one luminance (magnocellular) pathways. These pathways contain ON and OFF subpathways that respond to excitation increments and decrements respectively. Here, we report on visually evoked potentials (VEP) recordings that reflect L- and M-cone driven increment (LI and MI) and decrement (LD and MD) activity. VEP recordings were performed on 12 trichromats and four dichromats (two protanopes and two deuteranopes). We found that the responses to LI strongly resembled those to MD, and that LD and MI responses were very similar. Moreover, the lack of a photoreceptor type (L or M) in the dichromats led to a dominance of the ON pathway of the remaining photoreceptor type. These results provide electrophysiological evidence that antagonistic L/M signal processing, already present in the retina and the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), is also observed at the visual cortex. These data are in agreement with results from human psychophysics where MI stimuli lead to a perceived brightness decrease whereas LI stimuli resulted in perceived brightness increases. VEP recording is a noninvasive tool that can be easily and painlessly applied. We propose that the technique may provide information in the diagnosis of color vision deficiencies.

Abstract Introduction To analyze edge detection and optical contrast calculation of light field-indicators used in X-ray via automated- and observer-based methods, and comparison with current standard approaches, which do not give exact definition for light field edge determination. Methods Automated light sensor array was used to measure the penumbra zone of the edge in the standard X-ray equipment, while trained and naïve human observers were asked to mark the light field edge according to their own determination. Different interpretations of the contrast were then calculated and compared. Results In contrast to automated measurements of edge definition and detection, measurements by human observers showed large inter-observer variation independent of their training with X-ray equipment. Different contrast calculations considering the different edge definitions gave very different contrast values. Conclusion As the main conclusion, we propose a more exact edge definition of the X-ray light field, corresponding well to the average human observer's edge determination. The new edge definition method with automated systems would reduce human variability in edge determination. Such errors could potentially affect the approval of X-ray equipment, and also increase the radiation dose. The automated measurement based on human observers' edge definition and the corresponding contrast calculation may lead to a more precise light field calibration, which enables reduced irradiation doses on radiology patients.

PURPOSE: The dystrophin mouse mutant mdx3Cv exhibits scotopic electroretinograpic (ERG) abnormalities, which resemble clinical changes observed in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) patients. In the present study, ERGs obtained from mdx3Cv and their wild-type littermates under scotopic, mesopic, and photopic conditions were analyzed to provide further insight on the affected retinal pathways, and to compare them with human data. METHODS: Electroretinograms of mdx3Cv (n = 9) and age-matched C57BL/6J mice (n = 10) included the scotopic full-field flash (for outer retinal deficits in rod pathway), scotopic threshold response (for inner retinal integrity), photopic flash, sinusoidal flicker (for outer retinal deficits in cone pathway), mesopic rapid-on/-off sawtooth flicker, and photopic long-duration flash measurements (for separate ON-/OFF-responses under different conditions). RESULTS: The mdx3Cv mice exhibited diminished and delayed scotopic and photopic ERGs, particularly in their b-wave and oscillatory potentials. Interestingly, homologues to the a- and b-wave of the mesopic ON-response were affected in their peak/trough times but not in their amplitude, whereas changes to both features were uncovered for photopic ON-response and sinusoidal flicker. Mesopic and photopic OFF-components were within the norm. CONCLUSIONS: Abnormal scotopic and photopic flash ERGs were observed in mdx3Cv, which corroborate with deficits that are likely restricted to the level of photoreceptor-to-bipolar cell transmission. Further overlaps between mdx3Cv mice and DMD patients exist, including asymmetrical ON versus OFF ERG alterations under mesopic versus photopic vision. In mice, ON-pathway function is compromised, whereas the OFF-pathway is spared.

PURPOSE: Visual information is processed in parallel pathways in the visual system. Parallel processing begins at the synapse between the photoreceptors and their postreceptoral neurons in the human retina. The integrity of this first neural connection is vital for normal visual processing downstream. Of the numerous elements necessary for proper functioning of this synaptic contact, dystrophin proteins in the eye play an important role. Deficiency of muscle dystrophin causes Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), an X-linked disease that affects muscle function and leads to decreased life expectancy. In DMD patients, postreceptoral retinal mechanisms underlying scotopic and photopic vision and ON- and OFF-pathway responses are also altered. METHODS: In this study, we recorded the electroretinogram (ERG) while preferentially activating the (red-green) opponent or the luminance pathway, and compared data from healthy participants (n = 16) with those of DMD patients (n = 10). The stimuli were heterochromatic sinusoidal modulations at a mean luminance of 200 cd/m2. The recordings allowed us also to analyze ON and OFF cone-driven retinal responses. RESULTS: We found significant differences in 12-Hz response amplitudes and phases between controls and DMD patients, with conditions with large luminance content resulting in larger response amplitudes in DMD patients compared to controls, whereas responses of DMD patients were smaller when pure chromatic modulation was given. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that dystrophin is required for the proper function of luminance and red-green cone opponent mechanisms in the human retina.

PURPOSE: The authors discuss measurement methods and instrumentation useful for the characterization of the gray tracking performance of medical color monitors for diagnostic applications. The authors define gray tracking as the variability in the chromaticity of the gray levels in a color monitor. METHODS: The authors present data regarding the capability of color measurement instruments with respect to their abilities to measure a target white point corresponding to the CIE Standard Illuminant D65 at different luminance values within the grayscale palette of a medical display. The authors then discuss evidence of significant differences in performance among color measurement instruments currently available for medical physicists to perform calibrations and image quality checks for the consistent representation of color in medical displays. In addition, the authors introduce two metrics for quantifying grayscale chromaticity consistency of gray tracking. RESULTS: The authors' findings show that there is an order of magnitude difference in the accuracy of field and reference instruments. The gray tracking metrics quantify how close the grayscale chromaticity is to the chromaticity of the full white point (equal amounts of red, green, and blue at maximum level) or to consecutive levels (equal values for red, green, and blue), with a lower value representing an improved grayscale tracking performance. An illustrative example of how to calculate and report the gray tracking performance according to the Task Group definitions is provided. CONCLUSIONS: The authors' proposed methodology for characterizing the grayscale degradation in chromaticity for color monitors that can be used to establish standards and procedures aiding in the quality control testing of color displays and color measurement instrumentation.

BACKGROUND: Electroretinographic measurement instruments allow the variation of several stimulation parameters enabling to study a wide range of retinal processes. The purpose of the present study was to measure human flicker electroretinograms (ERGs) varying temporal modulation, temporal frequency and mean luminance in the photopic and higher mesopic ranges where the change from cone to rod dominance occurs. METHODS: Fourteen healthy subjects (mean age = 31 ± 6) participated in this study. ERG recordings were performed with the RetiPort system (Roland Consult, Germany). The stimuli were ON and OFF sawtooth waves, square wave and sine wave. The temporal frequencies were 4 and 8 Hz. The mean luminance varied from 1 to 60 cd/m(2). RESULTS: The results confirmed the possibility to distinguish between rod- and cone-dominated retinal responses when using the flicker ERG at different temporal frequencies and luminances. We have also evaluated the responses at luminance levels at which the transition between rod- and cone-dominated responses occurs. This transition between rod- and cone-dominated flicker ERG responses is indicated by a significant change in the response characteristics between 4 and 8 cd/m(2) (between 200 and 400 phot Td). CONCLUSIONS: The findings on the transition between rod- and cone-dominated ERGs along with the demonstration of ERG responses to different temporal flicker modulations might be informative for the electrophysiologists when setting up the stimulus at mesopic and photopic luminance levels.

PURPOSE: To determine the half-life of mycophenolic acid (MPA) in the vitreous of New Zealand albino rabbits after intravitreal injection and the retinal toxicity of different doses of MPA. METHODS: Ten micrograms of MPA (Roche Bioscience, Palo Alto, CA) was injected in the vitreous of 16 rabbits, animals were sacrificed at different time-points, and vitreous samples underwent high-performance liquid chromatography. For functional and morphological studies, 5 doses of MPA (0.05, 0.5, 2, 10, and 100 µg) were injected in the vitreous of 20 rabbits. As control, contralateral eyes were injected with aqueous vehicle. Electroretinograms (ERGs) were recorded before injection and at days 7, 15, and 30. Animals were sacrificed on day 30 and retinas were analyzed under light microscopy. RESULTS: MPA half-life in the vitreous was 5.0±0.3 days. ERG revealed photoreceptor functional impairment in eyes injected with 0.5 µg and higher on day 30, while eyes injected with 100 µg presented the same changes already from day 15. No morphological change was found. CONCLUSIONS: MPA vitreous half-life is 5.0 days. Intravitreal injection of 0.5 µg MPA and higher causes dose- and time-related photoreceptor sensitivity decrease in rabbits. The MPA dose of 0.05 µg may be safe for intravitreal use in rabbits.

The main purpose of this study was to reveal if the UV-A, and visible light reflection of leaves of white cabbage varieties is correlated to resistance against onion thrips. The antixenotic resistance (AR) against onion thrips and thrips damage differed between varieties Balashi, Bloktor, Riana - considered resistant - and Green Gem, Hurricane, Quisor - considered susceptible. The solar UV-A (340-400 nm) and visible (401-650 nm) light reflection of white cabbage leaves were recorded. Correlation between AR against onion thrips and reflection of leaves in UV-A and visible range of the studied white cabbage varieties were computed. According to the AR evaluation onion thrips density was always higher on susceptible than on resistant varieties. The UV-A light reflection of head forming leaves and the contrast between head and exterior leaves (H/E) was negatively correlated with onion thrips host preference at an early stage of cabbage head formation. The visible light reflection of both head forming and exterior leaves was also negatively correlated with onion thrips host preference. Susceptible varieties had greater damage ratings at harvest than resistant ones and positive correlations were observed between AR and damage. AR against onion thrips may be affected by differences in reflection of cabbage leaves at an early growth stage. It is suggested that more intensive reflection of leaves and/or higher contrast values between the reflectance intensity of head versus outer leaves made the resistant varieties less attractive to onion thrips. Our results reported here provide the first evidence of negative correlation between UV-A and visible reflection of leaves and AR of white cabbage against a dangerous insect pest, opening new perspectives for understanding the role of reflection by plant leaves in pest management.

PURPOSE: The study investigated possible asymmetric dysfunction of the ON and OFF visual mechanisms in DMD (Duchenne muscular dystrophy) patients associated with specific genetic alterations. METHODS: nineteen DMD patients and 7 heterozygous dmd carriers were tested, as well as 19 age-matched controls.Full-field ergs were recorded using mesopic (1 cd/m(2)) and photopic (250 cd/m(2)) sawtooth luminance modulations as stimuli: rapid increase and ramping decrease (to isolate ON responses) or rapid decrease and ramping increase (for OFF responses). In addition, a psychophysical study comprised contrast sensitivity tests using two checkerboard stimuli at either higher (ON) or lower (OFF) luminance relative to the background: 0.3 cycles per degree (cpd) presented for 33 ms (low spatial frequency, short duration) and 2 cpd presented for 1500 ms (high spatial frequency, long duration). RESULTS: A significant ERG amplitude reduction, relative to controls, was detected in the DMD patients in the mesopic positive peaks for both ON and OFF stimuli, as well as for the photopic ON stimulus (P < 0.05). Contrast sensitivity was significantly lower in the DMD patients (P < 0.05) relative to controls for the ON stimuli. Neither the ERG nor the contrast sensitivities were altered in the carriers. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that there are ON and OFF ERG alterations when both rods and cones contribute to the ERG responses in DMD patients. When only cones are activated there is an asymmetrical ERG alteration, also revealed by the contrast sensitivity measurements.

There are several electrophysiological systems available commercially. Usually, control groups are required to compare their results, due to the differences between display types. Our aim was to examine the differences between CRT and LCD/TFT stimulators used in pattern VEP responses performed according to the ISCEV standards. We also aimed to check different contrast values toward thresholds. In order to obtain more precise results, we intended to measure the intensity and temporal response characteristics of the monitors with photometric methods. To record VEP signals, a Roland RetiPort electrophysiological system was used. The pattern VEP tests were carried out according to ISCEV protocols on a CRT and a TFT monitor consecutively. Achromatic checkerboard pattern was used at three different contrast levels (maximal, 75, 25%) using 1° and 15' check sizes. Both CRT and TFT displays were luminance and contrast matched, according to the gamma functions based on measurements at several DAC values. Monitor-specific luminance parameters were measured by means of spectroradiometric instruments. Temporal differences between the displays' electronic and radiometric signals were measured with a device specifically built for the purpose. We tested six healthy control subjects with visual acuity of at least 20/20. The tests were performed on each subject three times on different days. We found significant temporal differences between the CRT and the LCD monitors at all contrast levels and spatial frequencies. In average, the latency times were 9.0 ms (±3.3 ms) longer with the TFT stimulator. This value is in accordance with the average of the measured TFT input-output temporal difference values (10.1 ± 2.2 ms). According to our findings, measuring the temporal parameters of the TFT monitor with an adequately calibrated measurement setup and correcting the VEP data with the resulting values, the VEP signals obtained with different display types can be transformed to be comparable.
