Gold mining not only introduces mercury (Hg) contamination to soils but also facilitates the mobilization of other toxic substances, including arsenic (As). This study assessed the total content, chemical species, and bioavailable fraction of As in surface soils impacted by mining residues during frequent flooding. Analysis of 207 soil samples across the floodplain region of La Mojana, Colombia, screened to 2 mm with polyethylene mesh, revealed significant correlations (p < 0.05) between inorganic As, the residual phase, sulphur (S), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and aluminum (Al), indicating associations with sulfides and oxyhydroxides of Fe and Mn. The origin of toxicity was linked to suspended materials transported by rivers during flooding in areas with intense mining activity. Sites with better oxidizing conditions exhibited a higher presence of phases associated with amorphous and crystalline oxides in non-flooded areas. Although the bioavailable fraction was minimal in flooded sites, reducing conditions facilitated As mobility, resulting in higher concentrations in deeper soil layers, particularly as As(III). The contamination factor (CF) ranged from 1.3 to 11.1, and the geochemical index (Igeo) ranged from -0.2 to 2.9, indicating a moderate to high As contamination level in soils. This poses potential health risks, considering the agricultural use of these soils.

In recent years, the use of pesticides has increased considerably for pest control and to improve agricultural production. The rural areas of several municipalities of department of Cordoba, north of Colombia, are highly dependent on agriculture. In this study, a questionnaire and field observations about pesticide use and genotoxic damage through the comet assay in peripheral blood lymphocytes of children who live near crop fields was evaluated. Damage Index for Comet Assay (DICA) of five children populations exposed to pesticides (mean of 94.73±53.95 for the municipality of Monteria, the higher damage in this study) were significantly Higher than control children population (mean of 7.56±7.39). Results showed the damage index in children exposed group was higher than in the control group. An inadequate management of pesticides, as well as incorrect disposal of toxic wastes was observed in the study zone.

The Amazon region abounds in precious mineral resources including gold, copper, iron, and coltan. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) poses a severe risk in this area due to considerable mercury release into the surrounding ecosystems. Nonetheless, the impact of mercury on both the overall microbiota and the microbial populations involved in mercury transformation is not well understood. In this study we evaluated microbial diversity in samples of soil, sediment and water potentially associated with mercury contamination in two localities (Taraira and Tarapacá) in the Colombian Amazon Forest. To this end, we characterized the bacterial community structure and mercury-related functions in samples from sites with a chronic history of mercury contamination which today have different levels of total mercury content. We also determined mercury bioavailability and mobility in the samples with the highest THg and MeHg levels (up to 43.34 and 0.049 mg kg-1, respectively, in Taraira). Our analysis of mercury speciation showed that the immobile form of mercury predominated in soils and sediments, probably rendering it unavailable to microorganisms. Despite its long-term presence, mercury did not appear to alter the microbial community structure or composition, which was primarily shaped by environmental and physicochemical factors. However, an increase in the relative abundance of merA genes was detected in polluted sediments from Taraira. Several Hg-responsive taxa in soil and sediments were detected in sites with high levels of THg, including members of the Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Chloroflexi phyla. The results suggest that mercury contamination at the two locations sampled may select mercury-adapted bacteria carrying the merA gene that could be used in bioremediation processes for the region.

In the present study, the technical feasibility of an electrocoagulation-treatment wetland continuous flow system, for the removal of organic matter from landfill leachate (LL), was evaluated. The response surface methodology (MSR) was used to assess the individual and combined effects of the applied potential and distance between electrodes, on the removal efficiency and optimization of the electrocoagulation process. The hybrid treatment wetland system consisted of a vertical flow system coupled to a horizontal subsurface flow system, both planted with Canna indica. For a chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration - without pretreatment of 5142.8 ± 2.5 mg L-1, the removal percentage for the electrocoagulation system was 79.4 ± 0.16%, under the optimal working conditions (Potential: 20 V; Distance: 2.0 cm). The COD removal efficiency in the treatment wetland with Canna indica showed a dependence with the hydraulic retention time, reaching 59.2 ± 0.2 % over 15 days. The overall efficiency of the system was about 91.5 ± 0.02 % removal of COD. In addition, a decrease in the biochemical oxygen demand (94.8 ± 0.14%) and total suspended solids (88.2 ± 0.22%), also related to the contamination levels of the LL, were obtained. This study, for the first time, shows that the coupling of electrocoagulation together with a treatment wetland system is a good alternative for the removal of organic contaminants present in LL.

Accurate identification of anatomical variations in the biliary tree is crucial in hepatobiliary surgeries, including the widely performed laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Coexisting anomalies, though rare, present challenges for surgeons. This case study follows a 43-year-old female post-sleeve gastrectomy, diagnosed with mild gallstone pancreatitis and choledocholithiasis, who underwent early cholecystectomy. Intraoperatively, a 3 mm aberrant right hepatic duct and three 1 mm subvesicular ducts were identified. Recognizing these variants is pivotal for surgical success. Utilizing preoperative imaging, intraoperative vigilance, and advanced techniques like cholangiography are essential in preventing complications. Continuous education and collaborative experiences among surgical teams are integral in enhancing patient safety in these complex procedures.

The clinical manifestations of asthma in children are highly variable, are associated with different molecular and cellular mechanisms, and are characterized by common symptoms that may diversify in frequency and intensity throughout life. It is a disease that generally begins in the first five years of life, and it is essential to promptly identify patients at high risk of developing asthma by using different prediction models. The aim of this review regarding the early prediction of asthma is to summarize predictive factors for the course of asthma, including lung function, allergic comorbidity, and relevant data from the patient's medical history, among other factors. This review also highlights the epigenetic factors that are involved, such as DNA methylation and asthma risk, microRNA expression, and histone modification. The different tools that have been developed in recent years for use in asthma prediction, including machine learning approaches, are presented and compared. In this review, emphasis is placed on molecular mechanisms and biomarkers that can be used as predictors of asthma in children.

The vertical distribution, level of contamination, potential ecological risks, and historical fluxes of trace elements (Pb, As, and Hg) were evaluated from 210Pb-dated sediment cores in three different areas with gold mining impacts in northern Colombia: the Atrato River (AR), the Delicias Marsh (DM) and the Encaramada Marsh (EM). All cores spanned ∼100 years; the mass accumulation rates followed the order AR > DM > EM. The average trace elements concentrations in the sediment cores were: Pb 2.41 ± 0.72, As 0.65 ± 0.32, Hg 0.07 ± 0.02 µg g-1 in the Atrato River; Pb 23.49 ± 2.59, As 2.46 ± 0.88, Hg 0.10 ± 0.02 µg g-1 in the Delicias Marsh; and Pb 9.76 ± 4.18, As 2.44 ± 1.26, Hg 0.17 ± 0.06 µg g-1 in the Encaramada Marsh. Sediments are classified according to the contamination factor (CF) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo) as low to very highly contaminated. The Pollution load index (PLI) indicates environmental deterioration (PLI> 1), and the Sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) indicate that only Hg may produce adverse biological effects in the EM core. This study is an example of the reconstruction of temporal changes in pollution levels and impacts of potentially toxic elements caused by gold mining in remote ecosystems, which can be reproduced in other areas where environmental monitoring is scarce or non-existent.

Despite being one of the most important tropical biomes in the world, the Atrato River basin has experienced a critical ecological deterioration due to gold mining, posing a significant threat to wildlife and human health. In this study, we measured the concentrations of mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As) in sediments at various swamps within the basin. Classical indices were employed to assess the associated ecological and human health risks linked to exposure to these elements. The concentrations of Hg and As in the sediments ranged between 0.09 and 0.23 mg/kg and 0.59-2.68 mg/kg, respectively. The highest Hg values were found at upstream stations impacted by gold mining activities. For As, the highest levels were found near river mouth (except for station B), where agricultural practices are taken place. The contamination factor (CF) indicated that most of the sediments exhibited moderate contamination levels of Hg and As, depending on the specific sampling area. Conversely, the pollution load index (PLI) suggested a contamination level ranging from basic to moderate, with the exception of station B, which showed a progressive deterioration of the site. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) indicated that the sediments were moderately contaminated with Hg, while showing signs of increasing contamination for As. According to the criteria for limiting effect concentrations (TEC), Hg concentrations exceeded the TEC at stations B and C, indicating a potential toxic risk to aquatic biota. A moderate potential ecological risk (PERI) was detected at downstream stations (D and E), and a high risk was detected at upstream stations (A, B and C). The hazard index (HI), used for non-carcinogenic risk assessment, suggested a risk of adverse effects on the population, particularly in children, with HI values exceeding 1. However, all lifetime cancer risk (TLCR) values fell within the acceptable range (1 × 10-6 to 1 × 10-4), indicating a negligible risk. Oral ingestion and inhalation were identified as the two primary routes of concern. This study serves as a valuable reference for risk assessment regarding exposures to environmental matrices that may not pose an immediate risk to human health.

Arsenic (As) is one of the most dangerous substances that can affect human health and long-term exposure to As in drinking water can even cause cancer. The objective of this study was to investigate the concentrations of total As in the blood of inhabitants of a Colombian region impacted by gold mining and to evaluate its genotoxic effect through DNA damage by means of the comet assay. Additionally, the concentration of As in the water consumed by the population as well as the mutagenic activity of drinking water (n = 34) in individuals were determined by hydride generator atomic absorption spectrometry and the Ames test, respectively. In the monitoring, the study population was made up of a group of 112 people, including inhabitants of four municipalities: Guaranda, Sucre, Majagual, and San Marcos from the Mojana region as the exposed group, and Montería as a control group. The results showed DNA damage related to the presence of As in blood (p < 0.05) in the exposed population, and blood As concentrations were above the maximum allowable limit of 1 µg/L established by the ATSDR. A mutagenic activity of the drinking water was observed, and regarding the concentrations of As in water, only one sample exceeded the maximum permissible value of 10 µg/L established by the WHO. The intake of water and/or food containing As is potentially generating DNA damage in the inhabitants of the Mojana region, which requires surveillance and control by health entities to mitigate these effects.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are a common type of soft tissue sarcoma that originates from the interstitial cells of Cajal in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. These tumors usually affect people above 50 years of age and can be difficult to diagnose, as symptoms can be vague and nonspecific, with some patients remaining asymptomatic. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial because GISTs can be aggressive and may metastasize. We present a case of a 74-year-old man who presented to our hospital with GI bleeding and anemia. Despite initial investigations, the source of bleeding was not identified until capsule endoscopy and then balloon enteroscopy revealed an ulcerated mass in the jejunum. The tumor was successfully removed using a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach, and the histopathologic report confirmed the diagnosis of GIST. The patient had an uneventful postoperative course. This case highlights the importance of considering GISTs in the differential diagnosis of obscure GI bleeding. A multidisciplinary approach is essential to ensure the best outcomes for these patients. Additionally, the use of minimally invasive surgery should be considered whenever possible to minimize postoperative complications and promote faster recovery.

By combining the Lewis acid Zn(C6F5)2 with nucleophilic diarylzinc (ZnAr2) reagents, we report the atom-efficient arylation of N-tosylimines under mild conditions. Mechanistic studies through the isolation of key intermediates reveal how the two zinc species act cooperatively to activate the imine substrate and regenerate the ZnAr2 reagent, enabling a limiting 50 mol% to be employed.

With the aim to distinguish between routes of exposition to mercury (Hg) in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities and to distinguish between Hg contamination sources, Hg species composition should be performed in human biomarkers. In this work, Hg species-specific determination were determined in human hair samples (N = 96), mostly non-directly occupied in ASGM tasks, from the six most relevant gold mining Colombian regions. Therefore, MeHg, Hg(II) and THg concentrations were simultaneously determined by double spiking species-specific isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) and GC-ICP-MS. Only 16.67% of participants were involved at some point in AGSM works and fish consumption ranged from 3 to 7 times/week, which is between medium and high intake levels. The median concentration of THg obtained from all samples is higher than the reference dose weekly acceptable of MeHg intake established by the EPA (1 ppm), whereas a 25% were more than 4 times higher than the WHO level (2.2 µg Hg g-1). Median THg value of individuals consuming fish 5-7 times per week was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those of the other consuming groups (12.5 µg Hg g-1). Most of the samples presented a % of MeHg relative to THg higher than 80%. The average % of Hg(II)/THg was 11% and only 10 individuals presented a Hg(II) content over 30%. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were found when the amount of Hg(II) was compared between people involved in AGSM task and people not involved. Interestingly, significant differences among the evaluated groups where found when the percentage of the Hg(II)/THg ratio of these groups were compared. In fact, people involved in AGSM tasks showed 1.7 times higher Hg(II)/THg vs. inhabitants uninvolved. This suggest that Hg(II) determination by IDMS-GC-ICP-MS could be a good proxy for evaluating Hg(II) adsorption by direct exposure to mercury vapors onto hair.

The Company of Biologists' 2022 workshop on 'Cell State Transitions: Approaches, Experimental Systems and Models' brought together an international and interdisciplinary team of investigators spanning the fields of cell and developmental biology, stem cell biology, physics, mathematics and engineering to tackle the question of how cells precisely navigate between distinct identities and do so in a dynamic manner. This second edition of the workshop was organized after a successful virtual workshop on the same topic that took place in 2021.

The main aim of this study was to investigate total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and arsenic (As) concentrations, and their genotoxic effects on fish species in freshwater habitats impacted by gold mining activities in the Mojana and Bajo Cauca regions (Northern Colombia). A total of 255 individuals of Prochilodus magdalenae (PM) and Hoplias malabaricus (HM) were collected in different areas of northern Colombia, 205 in the exposed groups: Mojana 1 (61), Mojana 2 (81) and Bajo Cauca (63); and 50 individuals in the control group. Dorsal muscle was analysed for pollutants and blood to perform micronucleus (MN) and erythrocytic nuclear alterations (ENA) tests. The results of the MN revealed statistically significant (p < 0.05) genetic damage in both PM (Mojana 1 = 29.7 ± 14.2; Mojana 2 = 25 ± 6.25; Bajo Cauca= 26.6 ± 10.6) and in HM (Mojana 1 = 17.7 ± 7.8; Mojana 2 = 20.4 ± 6.3; Bajo Cauca= 20.8 ± 9.8) compared to the control group (PM= 10.5 ± 3.6; HM= 9.1 ± 3.9). Likewise, the frequency of ENA was statistically higher in the exposed groups compared to the control group (p < 0.05). On the other hand, the concentrations of THg, MeHg and As found in tissue samples were significantly higher (p < 0.05) compared to the control group, being the Bajo Cauca region the area of highest risk due to high concentrations of THg (651.2 ± 344.5 µg/kg for HM and 678.5 ± 983.9 µg/kg for PM) and MeHg (504.6 ± 220.9 µg/kg for HM and 606.8 ± 886.4 µg/kg for PM). Results showed that mean THg values for both species in Bajo Cauca exceeded the WHO maximum limit (set in 500 µg Hg/kg) in fish for human consumption. Results suggest that DNA damage in erythrocytes is associated with the presence of Hg, MeHg and As, coming from mining activities.

The Atrato River basin was protected by Colombian law due to anthropogenic impacts, mainly from illegal gold mining, which triggered a critical environmental health problem. In this study we quantified mercury (Hg), methylmercury (MeHg) and arsenic (As) concentrations in aquatic environmental matrices, and explored for the first-time nuclear degenerations in fish from the Atrato River. The median concentrations (µg/kg) for T-Hg, MeHg and As in fish were 195.0, 175.5, and 30.0; in sediments (µg/kg) 165.5, 13.8 and 3.1; and in water (ng/L), 154.7 for T-Hg and 2.1 for As. A 38% and 10% of the fish exceeded the WHO limit for the protection of populations at risk (200 µg Hg/kg) and for human consumption (500 µg Hg/kg); while As concentrations were below the international standard (1000 µg/kg) in all fish. The percentage of MeHg was 89.7% and the highest accumulation was observed in carnivorous fish (336.3 ± 245.6 µg/kg, p < 0.05) of high consumption, indicating risk to human health. In water, T-Hg concentrations exceeded the threshold effect value of 12 ng/L, whereas As concentrations were below the threshold of 10,000 ng/L, established by USEPA. On the contrary, 33% of the sediments exceeded the quality standard of 200 µg/kg for Hg. We found that Prochilodus magdalenae was the species with the highest susceptibility to nuclear alterations in its order, nuclear bud (CNB, 3.7 ± 5.4%), micronuclei (MN, 1.6 ± 2.5%) and binucleated cells (BC, 1.6 ± 2.3%). These results indicate that the species appears to be a good predictor of genotoxicity in the Atrato River. Fulton's condition factor (K) indicated that 31.7% of the fishes had poor growth condition, suggesting that the Atrato River basin needs to be monitored and restored in accordance with the agreements reached in the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

The present study aims to explore the neuropsychological performance and exposure to mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As) in Colombian children and adolescents considering biomarkers in hair and blood. The total sample consisted of 70 participants from the Mojana region, Colombia. A neuropsychological evaluation protocol was used, consisting of 11 internationally recognized tests, with evidence of national validation and use for measurement in neurotoxicology contexts. A 57.1% of the sample presented levels above the reference value according to the USEPA, the WHO, and the ATSDR for total mercury in hair (HgH), blood mercury (HgB), and/or blood arsenic (AsB). The mean values reported for HgH were 1.76 ± 3.1 µg/g (95% CI 1.02-2.50) with ranges between 0.23 and 17.20; for HgB: 4.11 ± 5.93 µg/l (CI 2.69-5.52), ranging between 0.25 and 25.80, and for AsB: 1.96 ± 2.73 (CI 1.31-2.61) ranging between 0.50 and 15.50. In the comparison of groups in relation to the level of exposure, a significant difference was found (p < 0.05) for the subtest The Boston Naming Test (BNT). Correlation analyses found, on the one hand, significant negative relationships in tests integrated within the verbal (CVB) and executive function (EF) components as well as evidence of positive relationships in the manifestation of errors in their performance with the levels of Hg and/or As transformed by biomarker (Log10). In the linear regression analyses it was found that for each increase in the concentration of HgH, HgB, and AsB it is estimated that, both for the models with and without data adjustment, there is a loss of scores in integrated measures within the CVB and EF for the transformed levels of HgH, HgB, and AsB; and an increase in the reported errors in their processing within these functions. According to these results, exposure to mercury and/or arsenic is related with performance in verbal neuropsychological skills and executive functioning.

RESUMEN

La Mojana is a biodiverse area of wetlands that offers environmental services to its inhabitants. Despite its ecological relevance and for the food security of its inhabitants, this ecoregion has been strongly impacted by contamination from mining that takes place in the riverbeds that drain into it. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the levels of MeHg in foods of relevance to the population of the area, such as fish. Thus, current research seeks to determine the levels MeHg in the most consumed ichthyofauna in the region and its possible impacts on public health. Therefore, MeHg concentrations were determined in the most consumed fish species in San Marcos, Colombia. Using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry (CVAAS) the concentrations of MeHg in the dorsal muscle of the most consumed species were quantified. Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum, Plagioscion surinamensis, and Hoplias malabaricus registered the highest levels of MeHg with concentrations of 0.396 ± 0.025 µg/g; 0.377 ± 0.049 µg/g and 0.355 ± 0.028 µg/g, respectively. No species exceeded the maximum permissible concentration in the muscle of 0.5 µg/g for fresh fish established by the European Union. However, all carnivorous species exceed the threshold for a vulnerable population of 0.2 µg/g. It is concluded that the ichthyofauna of the Mojana is contaminated with MeHg, which constitutes a public health problem and a risk factor for the fauna and the inhabitants of this region, due to the habitual consumption of contaminated fish.


La Mojana es una zona biodiversa de humedales que ofrece servicios ambientales a sus habitantes. A pesar de su relevancia ecológica y para la seguridad alimentaria de sus pobladores, dicha ecorregión ha sido fuertemente impactada por la contaminación, proveniente de la minería que se desarrolla en los cauces de los ríos, que drenan en ella. Por lo anterior, es necesario monitorear los niveles de MeHg, en alimentos de relevancia para la población de la zona, como los peces. Así, la actual investigación busca determinar los niveles de MeHg en la ictiofauna de mayor consumo en la región y sus posibles impactos en la salud pública. Por lo tanto, se determinaron las concentraciones de MeHg en las especies de peces más consumidas en San Marcos, Colombia. Usando espectrofotometría de absorción atómica por vapor frío (CVAAS), se cuantificaron las concentraciones de MeHg, en músculo dorsal de las especies más consumidas. Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum, Plagioscion surinamensis y Hoplias malabaricus registraron los niveles más altos de MeHg, con concentraciones de 0,396 ± 0,025 µg/g; 0,377 ± 0,049 µg/g y 0,355 ± 0,028 µg/g, respectivamente. Ninguna especie superó los valores de concentración máxima permisible en músculo de 0,5 µg/g, para peces frescos, que establece la Unión Europea; sin embargo, todas las especies carnívoras superaron el umbral para población vulnerable, de 0,2 µg/g. Se concluye, que la ictiofauna de La Mojana, se encuentra contaminada con MeHg, lo que constituye un problema de salud pública y factor de riesgo para la fauna y los habitantes de esta región, debido al consumo habitual de peces contaminados.

RESUMEN

(1) Background: Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal that is widely distributed in water, soil, and air. It is present in agrochemicals, wastewater, battery waste, and volcanic eruptions. Thus, it can be absorbed by plants and enter the trophic chain. P. fasciculatum is a plant with phytoremediation capacity that can tolerate Cd stress, but changes in its proteome related to this tolerance have not yet been identified. (2) Methods: We conducted a quantitative analysis of the proteins present in P. fasciculatum leaves cultivated under greenhouse conditions in mining soils doped with 0 mg kg-1 (control), 30 mg kg-1, or 50 mg kg-1. This was carried out using the label-free shotgun proteomics technique. In this way, we determined the changes in the proteomes of the leaves of these plants, which allowed us to propose some tolerance mechanisms involved in the response to Cd stress. (3) Results: In total, 329 variable proteins were identified between treatments, which were classified into those associated with carbohydrate and energy metabolism; photosynthesis; structure, transport, and metabolism of proteins; antioxidant stress and defense; RNA and DNA processing; and signal transduction. (4) Conclusions: Based on changes in the differences in the leaf protein profiles between treatments, we hypothesize that some proteins associated with signal transduction (Ras-related protein RABA1e), HSPs (heat shock cognate 70 kDa protein 2), growth (actin-7), and cellular development (actin-1) are part of the tolerance response to Cd stress.

RESUMEN

Foreign body ingestion is a common condition in daily practice; fortunately, most cases do not require endoscopic or surgical treatment, as most foreign bodies pass through the intestine without injuring it. Although mainly seen in children, adults can also be affected, especially in accidental situations and suicide attempts. Therefore, the clinical history and the environment in which the event occurred are essential for a rapid diagnosis. This can be even more challenging as most adult patients are rarely aware of ingestion. Therefore, a high index of suspicion is necessary. Therapy will depend on the foreign body's size, shape and material; treatment should not be delayed if complications are detected. We present a case of a 34-year-old man who accidentally swallowed the mold of his teeth while undergoing a dental procedure. Subsequently, he presented with an intestinal obstruction that required surgery. Fortunately, he made a full recovery.
