RESUMEN

This Letter reports one of the most precise measurements to date of the antineutrino spectrum from a purely ^{235}U-fueled reactor, made with the final dataset from the PROSPECT-I detector at the High Flux Isotope Reactor. By extracting information from previously unused detector segments, this analysis effectively doubles the statistics of the previous PROSPECT measurement. The reconstructed energy spectrum is unfolded into antineutrino energy and compared with both the Huber-Mueller model and a spectrum from a commercial reactor burning multiple fuel isotopes. A local excess over the model is observed in the 5-7 MeV energy region. Comparison of the PROSPECT results with those from commercial reactors provides new constraints on the origin of this excess, disfavoring at 2.0 and 3.7 standard deviations the hypotheses that antineutrinos from ^{235}U are solely responsible and noncontributors to the excess observed at commercial reactors, respectively.

RESUMEN

The COVID-19 pandemic is a major shock to society in terms of health and economy that is affecting both UK and global food and nutrition security. It is adding to the 'perfect storm' of threats to society from climate change, biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation, at a time of considerable change, rising nationalism and breakdown in international collaboration. In the UK, the situation is further complicated due to Brexit. The UK COVID-19 F ood and N utrition S ecurity project, lasting one year, is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and is assessing the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on the four pillars of food and nutrition security: access, availability, utilisation and stability. It examines the food system, how it is responding, and potential knock on effects on the UK's food and nutrition security, both in terms of the cascading risks from the pandemic and other threats. The study provides an opportunity to place the initial lessons being learnt from the on-going responses to the pandemic in respect of food and nutrition security in the context of other long-term challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss.

Reactor neutrino experiments have seen major improvements in precision in recent years. With the experimental uncertainties becoming lower than those from theory, carefully considering all sources of ν ¯ e is important when making theoretical predictions. One source of ν ¯ e that is often neglected arises from the irradiation of the nonfuel materials in reactors. The ν ¯ e rates and energies from these sources vary widely based on the reactor type, configuration, and sampling stage during the reactor cycle and have to be carefully considered for each experiment independently. In this article, we present a formalism for selecting the possible ν ¯ e sources arising from the neutron captures on reactor and target materials. We apply this formalism to the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the ν ¯ e source for the the Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum Measurement (PROSPECT) experiment. Overall, we observe that the nonfuel ν ¯ e contributions from HFIR to PROSPECT amount to 1% above the inverse beta decay threshold with a maximum contribution of 9% in the 1.8-2.0 MeV range. Nonfuel contributions can be particularly high for research reactors like HFIR because of the choice of structural and reflector material in addition to the intentional irradiation of target material for isotope production. We show that typical commercial pressurized water reactors fueled with low-enriched uranium will have significantly smaller nonfuel ν ¯ e contribution.

RESUMEN

This Letter reports the first measurement of the ^{235}U ν[over ¯]_{e} energy spectrum by PROSPECT, the Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum experiment, operating 7.9 m from the 85 MW_{th} highly enriched uranium (HEU) High Flux Isotope Reactor. With a surface-based, segmented detector, PROSPECT has observed 31678±304(stat) ν[over ¯]_{e}-induced inverse beta decays, the largest sample from HEU fission to date, 99% of which are attributed to ^{235}U. Despite broad agreement, comparison of the Huber ^{235}U model to the measured spectrum produces a χ^{2}/ndf=51.4/31, driven primarily by deviations in two localized energy regions. The measured ^{235}U spectrum shape is consistent with a deviation relative to prediction equal in size to that observed at low-enriched uranium power reactors in the ν[over ¯]_{e} energy region of 5-7 MeV.

Solid-state density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamics (MD), and terahertz (THz) spectroscopy were used to study the formation of enantiotropically related conformational Form I and Form II polymorphs of the pharmaceutical compound, probucol. DFT calculations were performed on the crystal systems to compare relative lattice energies and the solvent stabilization of the metastable Form II structure. The thermodynamics of solvent inclusion in the Form II·MeOH crystal system were determined from MD simulations, as was the favored conformation of molecular probucol in methanol and ethanol solutions. The findings from both solid-state DFT and MD calculations suggest that the preferred molecular orientations of the probucol molecule in solution and the probable inclusion of methanol in the crystal lattice during the crystallization process lead to the solvent selectivity of the probucol polymorph formation. The additional stabilization energy provided by the crystallization solvent facilitates the nucleation and growth of the Form II polymorph under conditions that favor this metastable crystal form over the thermodynamically stable Form I, despite the higher energy molecular and crystalline configurations of probucol Form II. We demonstrate the influence of solvent on the formation of pharmaceutical polymorphs and provide a molecular-level view of complex interactions leading to polymorphism using a combination of computational methods and THz spectral data.

RESUMEN

New results are reported from the operation of the PICO-60 dark matter detector, a bubble chamber filled with 52 kg of C_{3}F_{8} located in the SNOLAB underground laboratory. As in previous PICO bubble chambers, PICO-60 C_{3}F_{8} exhibits excellent electron recoil and alpha decay rejection, and the observed multiple-scattering neutron rate indicates a single-scatter neutron background of less than one event per month. A blind analysis of an efficiency-corrected 1167-kg day exposure at a 3.3-keV thermodynamic threshold reveals no single-scattering nuclear recoil candidates, consistent with the predicted background. These results set the most stringent direct-detection constraint to date on the weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-proton spin-dependent cross section at 3.4×10^{-41} cm^{2} for a 30-GeV c^{-2} WIMP, more than 1 order of magnitude improvement from previous PICO results.

New data are reported from the operation of a 2 liter C3F8 bubble chamber in the SNOLAB underground laboratory, with a total exposure of 211.5 kg days at four different energy thresholds below 10 keV. These data show that C3F8 provides excellent electron-recoil and alpha rejection capabilities at very low thresholds. The chamber exhibits an electron-recoil sensitivity of <3.5×10(-10) and an alpha rejection factor of >98.2%. These data also include the first observation of a dependence of acoustic signal on alpha energy. Twelve single nuclear recoil event candidates were observed during the run. The candidate events exhibit timing characteristics that are not consistent with the hypothesis of a uniform time distribution, and no evidence for a dark matter signal is claimed. These data provide the most sensitive direct detection constraints on WIMP-proton spin-dependent scattering to date, with significant sensitivity at low WIMP masses for spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering.

This guideline, initially drawn up for use in the UK, is essentially based on ethical principles and should be applicable across other jurisdictions. The document specifically addresses the issues which surround obtaining consent from adults for the administration of systemic anti-cancer therapy in the haemato-oncology setting. Consenting to a treatment or procedure is a complex medical, ethical, and legal issue. The process of obtaining consent and the general steps that should be taken by the healthcare professional involved in obtaining consent from a patient are discussed, and the potential legal and ethical pitfalls which can be encountered are outlined. Of fundamental importance are the requirements that agreement must be given voluntarily, based on adequate information, and the patient must have the ability to understand and retain the information given and be in a position to use it in order to reach a decision. The consenting process should include an explanation of the expected outcomes and possible side effects of treatment even if these are unlikely to occur, and the nature of the consenting process undertaken should be clearly documented. Obtaining consent in an emergency situation is also discussed, as is the process of consenting in individuals with impaired capacity or special needs. Withdrawal of consent and refusal of treatment are also considered.

We report on a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 136Xe with EXO-200. No signal is observed for an exposure of 32.5 kg yr, with a background of ∼1.5×10(-3) kg(-1) yr(-1) keV(-1) in the ±1σ region of interest. This sets a lower limit on the half-life of the neutrinoless double-beta decay T(1/2)(0νßß)(136Xe)>1.6×10(25) yr (90% C.L.), corresponding to effective Majorana masses of less than 140-380 meV, depending on the matrix element calculation.

RESUMEN

A magnetically driven piston pump for xenon gas recirculation is presented. The pump is designed to satisfy extreme purity and containment requirements, as is appropriate for the recirculation of isotopically enriched xenon through the purification system and large liquid xenon time projection chamber of EXO-200. The pump, using sprung polymer gaskets, is capable of pumping more than 16 standard liters per minute of xenon gas with 750 Torr differential pressure.

RESUMEN

We describe a source capable of producing single barium ions through nuclear recoils in radioactive decay. The source is fabricated by electroplating (148)Gd onto a silicon α-particle detector and vapor depositing a layer of BaF(2) over it. (144)Sm recoils from the alpha decay of (148)Gd are used to dislodge Ba(+) ions from the BaF(2) layer and emit them in the surrounding environment. The simultaneous detection of an α particle in the substrate detector allows for tagging of the nuclear decay and of the Ba(+) emission. The source is simple, durable, and can be manipulated and used in different environments. We discuss the fabrication process, which can be easily adapted to emit most other chemical species, and the performance of the source.

This study reports the detection of Acanthamoeba and Naegleria species in 14 swimming pools around Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Sampling was carried out at 4 sites (the platforms (P), wall (W), 1 meter from the wall (1) and middle (2)) of each swimming pool. These free living amoebae (FLA) were detected under light and inverted microscopes after being cultured on the surface of non-nutrient agar lawned with Escherichia coli. Acanthamoeba species were detected in higher number of culture plates from all sampling sites of all the swimming pools. While Naegleria, were detected in fewer culture plates at 3 sampling sites (absent at site P) of 8 swimming pools. This suggested that the thick double-walled cysts of Acanthamoeba were more resistant, thus remaining viable in the dry-hot areas of the platforms and in chlorinated water of the swimming pools whereas Naegleria cysts, that are fragile and susceptible to desiccation, preferred watery or moist areas for growth and proliferation. The prevalence of both FLA was highest at site W (76.2%), followed by site 1 (64.7%), lowest at site 2 (19.4%), and could be detected at all 3 sampling levels (top, middle and bottom) of these 3 sites. The surface of site W might act as a bio-film that accumulated all kinds of microbes providing sufficient requirement for the FLA to develop and undergo many rounds of life cycles as well as moving from top to bottom in order to graze food. Other factors such as human activities, the circulating system which was fixed at all swimming pools, blowing wind which might carry the cysts from surroundings and the swimming flagellate stage of Naegleria could also contribute to the distribution of the FLA at these sampling sites. Both FLA showed highest growth (80.4%) at room temperature (25-28 ºC) and lesser (70.0%) at 37 ºC which might be due to the overgrowth of other microbes (E. coli, fungi, algae, etc). While at 44 ºC, only Acanthamoeba species could survive thus showing that our swimming pools are free from potentially pathogenic Naegleria species. However, further study is needed in order to confirm the virulence levels of these amoebae isolates.

RESUMEN

We describe a sensor for the measurement of thin dielectric layers capable of operation in a variety of environments. The sensor is obtained by microfabricating a capacitor with interleaved aluminum fingers, exposed to the dielectric to be measured. In particular, the device can measure thin layers of solid frozen from a liquid or gaseous medium. Sensitivity to single atomic layers is achievable in many configurations and, by utilizing fast, high sensitivity capacitance readout in a feedback system onto environmental parameters; coatings of few layers can be dynamically maintained. We discuss the design, readout, and calibration of several versions of the device optimized in different ways. We specifically dwell on the case in which atomically thin solid xenon layers are grown and stabilized, in cryogenic conditions, from a liquid xenon bath.

This report describes a novel diagnostic method for virus-vector trichodorid nematodes and associated Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) based on a real-time fluorogenic 5' nuclease PCR assay (TaqMan). Two independent primer/probe sets were designed targeting the 18S gene of the ribosomal cistron for the trichodorid species, Paratrichodorus pachydermus and Trichodorus similis. Assays using purified plasmid DNA containing clones of the 18S region and genomic DNA extracted from individuals from both nematode species displayed high specificity as no cros s-reaction was observed between the species or with two non-target trichodorid species Paratrichodorus anemones and Trichodorus primitivus. Relative quantification of target DNA present in unknown samples was performed by comparison of the fluorescence signals of the samples to those obtained from plasmid standard dilutions. Three primer/probe sets were also used to target TRV; one set for RNA1 and the two other sets for RNA2 of specific isolates (TRV-PpK20 and TRV-TpO1). Detection of both trichodorid species and TRV RNA1 and RNA2 from a single sample was achieved and field samples were used to demonstrate the potential of this assay to provide rapid, accurate and sensitive molecular information in relation to risk assessment in the field.

The peach-potato aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) is an important vector of plant viruses. A network of suction traps collects aerial samples of this aphid in order to monitor and help predict its spatial distribution and likely impact on virus transmission in crops. A suction trap catch is thought to be a good representation of the total aphid pool. Sensitive molecular markers have been developed that determine the genetic composition of the M. persicae population. In Scotland, UK, these were applied to field collections revealing a limited number of clones. Molecular markers are less successful when applied to specimens that have been preserved in an ethanol-based trap fluid designed to preserve morphology. An assessment of different DNA extraction and PCR techniques is presented and the most efficient are used to analyse M. persicae specimens caught in the Dundee suction trap in 2001, a year when exceptionally high numbers were caught. The results reveal that the majority of the M. persicae caught belonged to two highly insecticide resistant clones. In addition, it was possible to compare the relative frequencies of genotypes caught in the trap with those collected at insecticide treated and untreated field sites in the vicinity. These results indicate that, in addition to suction trap data, the ability to sample field sites provides valuable early warning data which have implications for pest control and virus management strategies.

Natural abundances of the stable isotopes, 15N/14N (delta15N) and 13C/12C (delta13C), were used to study temporal host-parasite relationships of the wild rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus (L.). During the 12-month sampling period, temporal isotopic shifts in delta15N were noted for dietary vegetation, host rabbit faeces and fur, but not for muscle or stomach contents. delta15N varied temporally for the parasitic cestode species, Mosgovoyia pectinata but not for Cittotaenia denticulata. Similarly, intestinal parasitic nematodes had apparent species-specific delta15N patterns. Only rabbit fur and intestinal parasitic nematodes did not exhibit temporal shifts in delta13C. Overall, host faeces and stomach contents were isotopically indistinct as a likely consequence of coprophagy. Relative to their host, parasitic nematodes were 15N-enriched, consistent with an increase in trophic level status. Conversely, cestodes were 15N-depleted. Isotopically, each parasite reflected a species-specific relationship with their rabbit host. This technique could be utilized to integrate parasites into food-web studies.

Stubby-root nematodes of the genus Paratrichodorus are migratory ectoparasites that cause stunted and deformed roots. They also transmit Tobacco rattle virus, the causal agent of corky ringspot disease in potato. Thus, they are important to the potato industry in the Pacific Northwest, including the Columbia Basin of Washington state, which is one of the largest potato-producing regions in the United States. Stubby-root nematode species are difficult to identify because the morphological differences between the species are very small (4). Paratrichodorus teres is a morphologically similar species and has been reported mainly from temperate regions within Europe. P. teres has also been reported in potato fields in eastern Oregon (3). The morphological similarity between P. allius and P. teres creates problems for routine identification because trichodorid species have a conservative morphology and are separated by the following primary characteristics: females, type of genital system and vulva position; males, number of ventromedian precloacal supplements and cervical papillae and habitus (2). As with most soil nematodes, females are more prevalent than the males. Unfortunately, in the generic key (2), female P. allius and P. teres belong to subgroup 1-12 and are separated by a secondary characteristic, vaginal shape that could be affected by fixation or handling. Male P. allius and P. teres are separated by the former species having one fewer ventromedian precloacal supplement. Thus, the morphological similarity between P. allius and P. teres creates problems for routine identification. This might be one of the reasons that P. teres has not been diagnosed in Washington until now. Using nematode morphological diagnostic keys (1,2) and comparing 18S rDNA sequence data obtained from specimens with those listed on public sequence databases, e.g., NCBI GenBank, stubby-root nematodes from two potato fields close to Moses Lake, Grant County, WA, were diagnosed as P. teres. The two adjacent potato fields are irrigated and are situated approximately 100 miles from the eastern Oregon site where P. teres was first described (3). Soil samples were collected from several Columbia Basin potato fields that had corky ringspot disease and stubby-root nematodes. The polyphagous stubby-root nematode species, Paratrichodorus teres (Hooper) Siddiqi, was first described from soil under lettuce near Norwich, UK and subsequently reported from South Africa and the United States, but predominantly from temperate regions within Europe (4). P. teres is one of 13 economically important trichodorid species known to be vectors of Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) (4). Artichokes planted during 2000 in a field located in the Kandia area of the Argolis Region, Greece (37°32'N, 22°56'E) exhibited symptoms of a virus infection. Sampling was done to ascertain the presence of Longidorus fasciatus, a vector of artichoke Italian latent nepovirus known to occur in the area (1,4). In addition to L. fasciatus, an unknown trichodorid species and Tylenchorhyncus sp. were recovered from the root zone of artichoke at a number of sites within the field. Measurements and morphological examination of the female (n = 13, body length = 741.7 ± 25.5 µm, onchiostyle = 43.7 ± 0.8 µm, and position of vulva from anterior region relative to total body length V% = 53.8 ± 0.4 µm) and male (n =1, body length = 720.5 µm, onchiostyle = 43.5 µm, spicule length = 51.7 µm, and number of ventromedian precloacal supplements = 3) trichodorids isolated from soil samples conformed to the original description of P. teres and the generic polytomous key (2). Furthermore, morphological identification was supported by molecular data. DNA was extracted from seven individual trichodorids, each of which were placed into separate 0.5-ml micro-centrifuge tubes containing 20 µl of 0.25 M NaOH and incubated at 25°C overnight. Thereafter, samples were incubated at 99°C for 3 min and 10 µl of 0.25 M HCl, 5 µl of 0.5 M Tris-HCl, (pH 8.0) and 5 µl of 2% Triton X-100 were added to each tube. Samples were incubated at 99°C for a further 3 min and stored at -20°C. Template DNA was amplified using polymerase chain reaction with primers specific for 18S rDNA and sequenced (3). The resultant consensus sequence had 99.8% homology to P. teres populations isolated from Portugal and good homology (95 to 98%) with five other Paratrichodorus spp. listed on public sequence databases, e.g., NCBI GenBank. The half-life, 3.8755(12) s, and superallowed branching ratio, 0.5315(12), for 22Mg beta decay have been measured with high precision. The latter depended on gamma-ray intensities being measured with an HPGe detector calibrated for relative efficiencies to an unprecedented 0.15%. Previous precise measurements of 0+ --> 0+ transitions have been restricted to the nine that populate stable daughter nuclei. No more such cases exist, and any improvement in a critical Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity test must depend on precise measurements of more exotic nuclei. With this branching-ratio measurement, we show those to be possible for T(z)=-1 parents. We obtain a corrected Ft value of 3071(9) s, in good agreement with expectations.
