RESUMEN

These days, photodetectors are a crucial part of optoelectronic devices, ranging from environmental monitoring to international communication systems. Therefore, fabricating these devices at a low cost but obtaining high sensitivity in a wide range of wavelengths is of great interest. This report introduces a simple solution-processed hybrid 2D structure of CuO and rGO for broadband photodetector applications. Particularly, 2D CuO acts as the active material, absorbing light to generate electron-hole pairs, while 2D rGO plays the role of a transport layer, driving charge carriers between two electrodes. Our device exhibits remarkable sensitivity to a wide wavelength range from 395 nm to 945 nm (vis-NIR region). Interestingly, our devices' responsivity and photoconductive gain were calculated (under 395 nm wavelength excitation) to be up to 8 mA W-1 and 28 fold, respectively, which are comparable values with previous publications. Our hybrid 2D structure between rGO and CuO enables a potential approach for developing low-cost but high-performance optoelectronic devices, especially photodetectors, in the future.

Over the years, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has shown great potential in mapless autonomous robot navigation and path planning. These DRL methods rely on robots equipped with different light detection and range (LiDAR) sensors with a wide field of view (FOV) configuration to perceive their environment. These types of LiDAR sensors are expensive and are not suitable for small-scale applications. In this paper, we address the performance effect of the LiDAR sensor configuration in DRL models. Our focus is on avoiding static obstacles ahead. We propose a novel approach that determines an initial FOV by calculating an angle of view using the sensor's width and the minimum safe distance required between the robot and the obstacle. The beams returned within the FOV, the robot's velocities, the robot's orientation to the goal point, and the distance to the goal point are used as the input state to generate new velocity values as the output action of the DRL. The cost function of collision avoidance and path planning is defined as the reward of the DRL model. To verify the performance of the proposed method, we adjusted the proposed FOV by ±10° giving a narrower and wider FOV. These new FOVs are trained to obtain collision avoidance and path planning DRL models to validate the proposed method. Our experimental setup shows that the LiDAR configuration with the computed angle of view as its FOV performs best with a success rate of 98% and a lower time complexity of 0.25 m/s. Additionally, using a Husky Robot, we demonstrate the model's good performance and applicability in the real world.

Optoelectronic devices have various applications in medical equipment, sensors, and communication systems. Photodetectors, which convert light into electrical signals, have gained much attention from many research teams. This study describes a low-cost photodetector based on CuO nanoparticles and ZnO nanorods operating in a wide range of light wavelengths (395, 464, 532, and 640 nm). Particularly, under 395 nm excitation, the heterostructure device exhibits high responsivity, photoconductive gain, detectivity, and sensitivity with maximum values of 1.38 A·W-1, 4.33, 2.58 × 1011 Jones, and 1934.5% at a bias of 2 V, respectively. The sensing mechanism of the p-n heterojunction of CuO/ZnO is also explored. Overall, this study indicates that the heterostructure of CuO nanoparticles and ZnO nanorods obtained via a simple and cost-effective synthesis process has great potential for optoelectronic applications.

We present evidence for a suppressed growth rate of large-scale structure during the dark-energy-dominated era. Modeling the growth rate of perturbations with the "growth index" γ, we find that current cosmological data strongly prefer a higher growth index than the value γ=0.55 predicted by general relativity in a flat Lambda cold dark matter cosmology. Both the cosmic microwave background data from Planck and the large-scale structure data from weak lensing, galaxy clustering, and cosmic velocities separately favor growth suppression. When combined, they yield γ=0.633_{-0.024}^{+0.025}, excluding γ=0.55 at a statistical significance of 3.7σ. The combination of fσ_{8} and Planck measurements prefers an even higher growth index of γ=0.639_{-0.025}^{+0.024}, corresponding to a 4.2σ tension with the concordance model. In Planck data, the suppressed growth rate offsets the preference for nonzero curvature and fits the data equally well as the latter model. A higher γ leads to a higher matter fluctuation amplitude S_{8} inferred from galaxy clustering and weak lensing measurements, and a lower S_{8} from Planck data, effectively resolving the S_{8} tension.

Photodetectors are essential elements for various applications like fiber optic communication systems, biomedical imaging, and so on. Thus, improving the performance and reducing the material costs of photodetectors would act as a motivation toward the future advancement of those applications. This study introduces the development of a nanohybrid of zinc oxide nanorods (ZnONRs) and multi-shaped silver nanoparticles MAgNPs through a simple solution process; in which ZnONRs are hybridized with MAgNPs to enable visible absorption through the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. The photodetector based on ZnONRs/MAgNPs is responsive to visible light with representative wavelengths of 395, 464, 532 and 640 nm, and it exhibits high responsivity (R), photoconductive gain (G) and detectivity (D). The maximum R is calculated from the fitting curve of the responsivity-power relation with the value of 5.35 × 103 (mA W-1) at 395 nm excitation. The highest G and D reach 8.984 and 3.71 × 1010 Jones at that wavelength. This reveals the promise of our innovative broadband photodetector for practical usage.

A hybrid Cu-doped ZnO nanorods (ZnO:Cu NRs)/poly(3,4 ethylene dioxythiophene)-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)-based photodetector was fabricated using a simple hydrothermal method with pre-patterned silver electrodes. In the hybrid structure, PEDOT:PSS with high mobility acts as a carrier transport layer, while ZnO:Cu NRs with high visible absorption works as an "antenna" material to generate electron-hole pairs under light illumination. As a result, the devices exhibits a high response in visible light at a wavelength of 395 nm. The responsivity and photoconductive gain of the hybrid photodetector reached 0.33 A W-1 and 1.306, respectively, which is 1.36 times higher than those of Cu-doped ZnO NRs-based ones. The response and recovery times are improved, with values of 25.21 s and 42.01 s, respectively. The development of hybrid materials for visible photodetectors enables an innovative approach for future optoelectronic devices, especially optical sensors.

PURPOSE: Proper functional and structural integrity of nervous and vascular system in urinary bladder plays an important role in normal bladder function and the disruption of these structures is known to be related to lower urinary tract symptoms. Here, we present an immunohistochemical staining method that delineates neurovascular structures in the mouse urinary bladder by using immunohistochemical staining with three-dimensional reconstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The urinary bladder was harvested from 8-week-old C57BL/6 male mouse. Lamina propria and detrusor muscle layer were dissected for whole mount staining, and thick-cut (60-µm) sections were prepared for full-thickness bladder staining. Immunofluorescent staining of bladder tissue was performed with antibodies against CD31 (an endothelial cell marker), smooth muscle α-actin (a smooth muscle cell marker), NG2 (a pericyte marker), and ßIII-tubulin (a neuronal marker). We reconstructed three-dimensional images of bladder neurovascular system from stacks of two-dimensional images. RESULTS: Three-dimensional images obtained from thick-cut sections clearly provided good anatomic information about neurovascular structures in the three layers of bladder, such as urothelium, lamina propria, and detrusor muscle layer. Whole mount images of lamina propria and detrusor muscle layer also clearly delineated spatial relationship between nervous and vascular systems. The microvessel density was higher in the lamina propria than in the detrusor muscle layer. Nerve fibers were evenly innervated into the lamina propria and detrusor muscle. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides comprehensive insight into three-dimensional neurovascular structures of mouse urinary bladder. Our technique may constitute a standard tool to evaluate pathologic changes in a variety of urinary bladder diseases.

Microbial safety in food products is not always adequately controlled. Chemical antimicrobials which are recognized as hazards to human health are gradually replaced by natural antimicrobial compounds. In the current study, the antimicrobial activity against some Gram-positive and Gram- negative bacteria by the methanolic extract from rambutan fruit peels was evaluated using both in vitro (medium) and in situ (food matrices i.e. raw chicken breast and pangasius fillet fish) methods. Methanolic rambutan peel extract (lyophilized to powder with total phenolic content of 310 ± 14.5 mg GAE/g) with geraniin, ellagic acid, rutin, quercetin, and corilagin as main phenolic compounds was a potent inhibitor towards E. coli, V. campbellii, V. parahaemolyticus, V. anguillarum, P. aeruginosa, S. enteritidis, St. aureus, L. monocytogenes, and C. albicans using in vitro tests. In in situ tests, the extract inhibited S. enteritidis in raw chicken breast during 14 days of cold storage at 4 °C. Even though food matrices partly protected bacteria, the extract showed a 1.5 log CFU/g reduction of V. parahaemolyticus in fish during 10 days of cold storage. These results provide useful information on the utilization of rambutan fruit peel as natural antimicrobial agent in food products.

The objective of the present study is to investigate removal of cationic dye, rhodamine B (RhB), in water environment using a high-performance absorbent based on metal oxide nanomaterials toward green chemistry. The adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) onto synthesized alpha alumina (α-Al2O3) material (M0) at different ionic strengths under low pH was studied to fabricate a new adsorbent as SDS-modified α-Al2O3 material (M1). The RhB removal using M1 was much higher than M0 under the same experimental conditions. The optimal conditions for RhB removal using M1 were found to be contact time 30 min, pH 4, and adsorbent dosage 5 mg/mL. The maximum RhB removal using M1 achieved 100%, and adsorption amount reached 52.0 mg/g. Adsorption isotherms of RhB onto M1 were well fitted by the two-step adsorption model. The electrostatic attraction between positive RhB molecules and negatively charged M1 surface controlled the adsorption that was evaluated by the surface charge change with zeta potential and adsorption isotherms. Very high RhB removal of greater than 98% after four regenerations of M1 and the maximum removal for all actual textile wastewater samples demonstrate that SDS-modified nano α-Al2O3 is a high-performance and reusable material for RhB removal from wastewater.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have attracted particular interest in various fields of biology and medicine. However, one of the major hurdles in the clinical application of EV-based therapy is their low production yield. We recently developed cell-derived EV-mimetic nanovesicles (NVs) by extruding cells serially through filters with diminishing pore sizes (10, 5, and 1 µm). Here, we demonstrate in diabetic mice that embryonic stem cell (ESC)-derived EV-mimetic NVs (ESC-NVs) completely restore erectile function (~96% of control values) through enhanced penile angiogenesis and neural regeneration in vivo, whereas ESC partially restores erectile function (~77% of control values). ESC-NVs promoted tube formation in primary cultured mouse cavernous endothelial cells and pericytes under high-glucose condition in vitro; and accelerated microvascular and neurite sprouting from aortic ring and major pelvic ganglion under high-glucose condition ex vivo, respectively. ESC-NVs enhanced the expression of angiogenic and neurotrophic factors (hepatocyte growth factor, angiopoietin-1, nerve growth factor, and neurotrophin-3), and activated cell survival and proliferative factors (Akt and ERK). Therefore, it will be a better strategy to use ESC-NVs than ESCs in patients with erectile dysfunction refractory to pharmacotherapy, although it remains to be solved for future clinical application of ESC.

INTRODUCTION: Penile neurovascular dysfunction is a major cause of erectile dysfunction (ED) in diabetic patients, which causes poor response to oral phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors. Nerve growth factor precursor (proNGF) and its p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) have been known to be involved in microvascular complications and neurodegeneration. AIM: To examine the role of proNGF and its receptor p75NTR signaling pathway in diabetic ED, and to determine the effectiveness of proNGF neutralizing antibody (proNGF-Ab) in restoring erectile function in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. METHODS: Diabetes mellitus was induced by intraperitoneal injection of STZ (50 mg/kg) into 8-week-old C57BL/6 male mice for 5 consecutive days. At 8 weeks after the induction of diabetes mellitus, the animals were distributed into 3 groups: controls and STZ-induced diabetic mice receiving 2 intracavernous injections of either saline (days -3 and 0; 20 µL) or proNGF-Ab (days -3 and 0; 20 µg in 20 µL of saline). We also examined the effect of proNGF-Ab or p75NTR small interfering RNA in primary cultured mouse cavernous endothelial cells, pericytes, and major pelvic ganglion. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Erectile function was measured by electrical stimulation of the cavernous nerve at 2 weeks after treatment, and the penis was then harvested for histologic and biochemical studies. RESULTS: The cavernous expression of proNGF and p75NTR was upregulated under diabetic conditions. Intracavernous injection of proNGF-Ab successfully restored erectile function in diabetic mice, which reach 93-96% of control values. ProNGF-Ab significantly restored cavernous endothelial cell, pericyte, and neuronal cell content, and increased endothelial cell-to-cell junction proteins in the diabetic mice. Under the high-glucose condition, proNGF-Ab or p75NTR small interfering RNA promoted tube formation in mouse cavernous endothelial cells and pericytes, decreased apoptosis of endothelial cells and pericytes, and enhanced neurite sprouting from major pelvic ganglion. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The ProNGF/p75NTR pathway will be a new therapeutic target for diabetic ED. STRENGTH & LIMITATIONS: This is the first study demonstrating the efficacy of the inhibition of proNGF/p75NTR pathway in diabetic ED. Further studies are needed to test whether a different dosing of proNGF-Ab would induce more durable erectile function recovery. 3,5-diiodo-L-thyronine (3,5-T2) is an endogenous derivative of thyroid hormone with potential metabolic effects. It has been detected in human blood by immunological methods, but a reliable assay based on mass spectrometry (MS), which is now regarded as the gold standard in clinical chemistry, is not available yet. Therefore, we aimed at developing a novel ad-hoc optimized method to quantitate 3,5-T2 and its isomers by MS in human serum. Serum samples were obtained from 28 healthy subjects. Two ml of serum were deproteinized with acetonitrile and then subjected to an optimized solid phase extraction-based procedure. To lower background noise, the samples were furtherly cleaned by hexane washing and acetonitrile precipitation of residual proteins. 3,5-T2 and its isomers 3,3'-T2 and 3',5'-T2 were then analyzed by HPLC coupled to tandem MS. Accuracy and precision for T2 assay were 88-104% and 95-97%, respectively. Recovery and matrix effect averaged 78% and +8%, respectively. 3,5-T2 was detected in all samples and its concentration averaged (mean ± SEM) 41 ± 5 pg/ml, i.e., 78 ± 9 pmol/l. In the same samples the concentration of 3,3'-T2 averaged 133±15 pg/ml, i.e., 253±29 pmol/l, while 3',5'-T2 was not detected. 3,5-T2 concentration was significantly related to 3,3'-T2 concentration (r = 0.540, P < 0.01), while no significant correlation was observed with either T3 or T4 in a subset of patients in which these hormones were assayed. In conclusion, our method is able to quantify 3,5-T2 and 3,3'-T2 in human serum. Their concentrations lie in the subnanomolar range, and a significant correlation was detected between these two metabolites in healthy individuals.

Age-related changes in menopause women not only affect the physical appearance of the female external genitalia but also disrupt sexual functioning, for which many menopause women may require treatment to resolve these aesthetic problems or sexual dysfunction. Unfortunately, it is not infrequent that women seek non-medical solutions, including local injection of an unapproved agent into external genitalia, and it is extremely rare for it to be reported in literature. This case study reports on the experiences of treating two menopause women who had labial granuloma induced by local injection of paraffin.

3,5-diiodo-l-thyronine (T2) is an endogenous derivative of thyroid hormone that has been suggested to regulate energy expenditure, resting metabolic rate and oxygen consumption with a mechanism that involves the activation of mitochondrial function. In this study, we focused on the cardiac effects of T2, which have been poorly investigated so far, by using both in vitro and ex vivo models. As a comparison, the response to T3 and T4 was also determined. Rat cardiomyoblasts (H9c2 cells) were used to determine T2, T3, and T4 uptake by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. In the same experimental model, MTT test, crystal violet staining, and glucose consumption were investigated, using T2 concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 10 µM. To assess cardiac functional effects, isolated working rat hearts were perfused with T2, T3, or T4 in Krebs-Ringer buffer, and the hemodynamic variables were recorded. T2 was taken up by cardiomyoblasts, and in cell lysate T2 levels increased slowly over time, reaching higher concentrations than in the incubation medium. T2 significantly decreased MTT staining at 0.5-10 µM concentration (P < 0.05). Crystal violet staining confirmed a reduction of cell viability only upon treatment with 10 µM T2, while equimolar T3 and T4 did not share this effect. Glucose consumption was also significantly affected as indicated by glucose uptake being increased by 24 or 35% in cells exposed to 0.1 or 1.0 µM T2 (P < 0.05 in both cases). On the contrary, T3 did not affect glucose consumption which, in turn, was significantly reduced by 1 and 10 µM T4 (-24 and -41% vs control, respectively, P < 0.05 and P < 0.01). In the isolated perfused rat heart, 10 µM T2 produced a slight and transient reduction in cardiac output, while T3 and T4 did not produce any hemodynamic effect. Our findings indicate that T2 is taken up by cardiomyoblasts, and at 0.1-1.0 µM concentration it can modulate cardiac energy metabolism by increasing glucose consumption. Some evidence of toxicity and a transient impairment of contractile performance are observed only at 10 µM concentration. These effects appear to be specific for T2, since they are not reproduced by T3 or T4.

INTRODUCTION: The functional food Cruciferous vegetables contain glucosinolates which are decomposed by the myrosinase enzyme upon tissue damage. The isothiocyanates are the most frequent decomposition products. Because of their various bioactivities, these compounds and the myrosinase is of high interest to many scientific fields. OBJECTIVE: Development of a capillary electrophoresis method capable of myrosinase-compatible, simultaneous quantification of glucosinolates and isothiocyanates. METHODS: Capillary electrochromatography parameters were optimised, followed by optimisation of a myrosinase-compatible derivatisation procedure for isothiocyanates. Vegetable extracts (Brussels sprouts, horseradish, radish and watercress) were tested for myrosinase activity, glucosinolate content and isothiocyanate conversion rate. Allyl isothiocyanate was quantified in some food products. RESULTS: The method allows quantification of sinigrin, gluonasturtiin and allyl isothiocyanate after myrosinase compatible derivatisation in-vial by mercaptoacetic acid. The chromatograhpic separation takes 2.5 min (short-end injection) or 15 min (long-end injection). For the tested vegetables, measured myrosinase activity was between 0.960-27.694 and 0.461-26.322 µmol/min/mg protein, glucosinolate content was between 0-2291.8 and 0-248.5 µg/g fresh weight for sinigrin and gluconastrutiin, respectively. The possible specificity of plants to different glucosinolates was also shown. Allyl isothiocyanate release rate was different in different vegetables (73.13 - 102.13%). The method could also be used for quantification of allyl isothiocyanate from food products. CONCLUSIONS: The presented capillary electrophoresis method requires a minimal amount of sample and contains only a few sample preparation steps, and can be used in several applications (glucosinolate determination, myrosinase activity measurement, isothiocyanate release estimation). Horseradish essential oil (HREO; a natural mixture of different isothiocyanates) had strong fungicide effect against Candida albicans both in volatile and liquid phase. In liquid phase this antifungal effect was more significant than those of its main components allyl, and 2-phenylethyl isothiocyanate. HREO, at sublethal concentration, induced oxidative stress which was characterized with elevated superoxide content and up-regulated specific glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase activities. Induction of specific glutathione S-transferase activities as marker of glutathione (GSH) dependent detoxification was also observed. At higher concentration, HREO depleted the GSH pool, increased heavily the superoxide production and killed the cells rapidly. HREO and the GSH pool depleting agent, 1-chlore-2,4-dinitrobenzene showed strong synergism when they were applied together to kill C. albicans cells. Based on all these, we assume that GSH metabolism protects fungi against isothiocyanates.

CE methods are valuable tools for medicinal plant quality management, screening, and analysis. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to optimize and validate a CE-MEKC method for simultaneous quantification of four chief bioactive metabolites from Plantago species. The two most important secondary metabolite groups were aimed to be separated. Different electrolyte and surfactant types were tested. Surfactant concentration, BGE pH, electrolyte concentration, and buffering capacity were optimized. The final BGE consisted of 15 mM sodium tetraborate, 20 mM TAPS, and 250 mM DOC at pH 8.50. Acceptable precision, good stability, and accuracy were achieved, with high resolution for phenylethanoid glycosides. Analytes were separated within 20 min. The method was shown to be suitable for the quantification of the iridoid glycosides aucubin and catalpol, and the phenylethanoid glycosides acteoside (verbascoside) and plantamajoside from water extracts of different samples. The method was shown to be applicable to leaf extracts of Plantago lanceolata, Plantago major, and Plantago asiatica, the main species with therapeutic applications, and a biotechnological product, plant tissue cultures (calli) of P. lanceolata. Baseline separation of the main constituents from minor peaks was achieved, regardless of the matrix type.
