RESUMEN

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are considered as promising candidates for realizing multifunctional applications, including photodetectors, field effect transistors and solar cells. In this work, we performed first-principles calculations to design a 2D vdW MoTe2/MoS2 heterostructure and investigate its electronic properties, contact types and the impact of an electric field and in-plane biaxial strain. We find that the MoTe2/MoS2 heterostructure is predicted to be structurally, thermally and mechanically stable. It is obvious that the weak vdW interactions are mainly dominated at the interface of the MoTe2/MoS2 heterostructure and thus it can be synthesized in recent experiments by the transfer method or chemical vapor deposition. The construction of the vdW MoTe2/MoS2 heterostructure forms a staggered type II band alignment, effectively separating the electrons and holes at the interface and thereby extending the carrier lifetime. Interestingly, the electronic properties and contact types of the type II vdW MoTe2/MoS2 heterostructure can be tailored under the application of external conditions, including an electric field and in-plane biaxial strain. The semiconductor-semimetal-metal transition and type II-type I conversion can be achieved in the vdW MoTe2/MoS2 heterostructure. Our findings underscore the potential of the vdW MoTe2/MoS2 heterostructure for the design and fabrication of multifunctional applications, including electronics and optoelectronics.

In this work, we design computationally the metal-semiconductor NbS2/BP heterostructure and investigate its atomic structure, electronic properties and contact barrier using first-principles prediction. Our results show that the M-S NbS2/BP heterostructure is energetically stable and is characterized by weak vdW interactions. Interestingly, we find that the combination of the metallic NbS2 and semiconducting BP layers leads to the formation of a M-S contact. The M-S NbS2/BP heterostructure exhibits a p-type Schottky contact and a low tunneling-specific resistivity of 3.98 × 10-10 Ω cm2, indicating that the metallic NbS2 can be considered as an efficient 2D electrical contact to the semiconducting BP layer to design NbS2/BP heterostructure-based electronic devices with high charge injection efficiency. The contact barrier and contact type in the M-S NbS2/BP heterostructure can be adjusted by applying an external electric field. The conversion from p-type ShC to n-type ShC can be achieved by applying a negative electric field, while the transformation from ShC to OhC type can be achieved under the application of a positive electric field. The conversion between p-type and n-type ShC and ShC to OhC type in the NbS2/BP heterostructure demonstrates that it can be considered as a promising material for next-generation electronic devices.

The detection of ampicillin plays a crucial role in managing and monitoring its usage and resistance. This study introduces a simple and effective biosensor for ampicillin detection, utilizing the unique absorbance features of Mn-doped ZnS capped by chitosan micromaterials in conjunction with ß-lactamase activity. The biosensors can detect ampicillin concentrations from 13.1 to 72.2 µM, with a minimum detection limit of 2.93 µM for sensors based on 300 mg/L of the sensing material. In addition, these sensors show high specificity for ampicillin over other antibiotics such as penicillin, tetracycline, amoxicillin, cephalexin, and a non-antibiotic-glucose. This specificity is demonstrated by an enhancing effect when beta-lactamase is used, as opposed to a quenching effect observed at 340 nm in the absorbance spectrum when no beta-lactamase is present. This research highlights the potential of affordable chitosan-capped Mn-doped ZnS micromaterials for detecting ampicillin through simple absorbance measurements, which could improve the monitoring of antibiotics in both clinical and environmental settings.

Purpose: Glial fibrillary acidic protein serves as a biomarker indicative of astroglial injury, particularly following instances of severe traumatic brain injury. This study aims to evaluate variations in serum glial fibrillary acidic protein levels within the first 3 days and their correlation with outcomes in patients with severe traumatic brain injury. Subjects and methods: Thirty-nine patients with severe traumatic brain injury were enrolled in the study. Their blood samples were collected at six distinct time points: T0 (upon admission), T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 (6-, 12-, 24-, 48-, and 72-h post-admission, respectively). The blood samples were run for the quantification of serum glial fibrillary acidic protein levels and other biochemical tests. All patients were closely watched and the outcomes at discharge were evaluated. Results: Glial fibrillary acidic protein levels tend to increase gradually from the time of admission to 48 h post-admission and then decrease at 72 h post-admission. Glial fibrillary acidic protein T2 is correlated with Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score, lactate, Simplified Acute Physiology Score II score and outcome. Glial fibrillary acidic protein max correlated with lactate, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score, Simplified Acute Physiology Score II score, and outcome. Glasgow Coma Score at admission and glial fibrillary acidic protein T2 (OR = 1.034; p = 0.025), T3 (OR = 1.029; p = 0.046), T4 (OR = 1.006; p = 0.032), T5 (OR = 1.012; p = 0.048) and glial fibrillary acidic protein max (OR = 1.005; p = 0.010) were independent factors that have significant prognostic value in mortality in patients with severe traumatic brain injury. The predictive model in predicting mortality had the highest area under the curve based on glial fibrillary acidic protein T2 and Glasgow Coma Score T0 with an area under the curve of 0.904 and p < 0.001. In the multivariable regression model, glial fibrillary acidic protein max was associated with Glasgow score (p < 0.001; VIF = 1.585), lactate T0 (p = 0.024; VIF = 1.163), Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score (p = 0.037; VIF = 1.360), and Rotterdam score (p = 0.044; VIF = 1.713). Conclusion: Glial fibrillary acidic protein levels tend to increase gradually from the time of admission to 48 h post-admission then decreases at 72 h post-admission. Glial fibrillary acidic protein T2, T3, T4, T5, and glial fibrillary acidic protein max were independent factors with significant prognostic mortality values in patients with severe traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Children born preterm and/or small for gestational age (SGA) are at increased risk of poor cognitive outcomes, particularly in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the cognitive and academic deficits during the school-age years in children born preterm or SGA compared with those in children born term adequate for gestational age (AGA) in rural Vietnam. METHODS: Children born to women in a preconception micronutrient supplementation trial in Vietnam were classified into 3 groups: preterm AGA (n =138), term SGA (n =169), and term AGA (n = 1134). Cognitive abilities were assessed using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, measuring 4 domains [verbal comprehension index (VCI), perceptual reasoning index (PRI), working memory index (WMI), and processing speed index (PSI) scores] and full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) at 6-7 and 10-11 y. Academic achievement was assessed with mathematic and language tests. Analysis of variance and multiple regression models were used to analyze differences in cognitive function and academic achievement at 6-7 and 10-11 y by birth phenotypes. RESULTS: Compared with term AGA children, those born SGA had lower cognitive scores at both 6-7 y (VCI, -2.3; PRI, -3.7; PSI -2.1; and FSIQ, -2.9) and 10-11 y (VCI, -3.7; PRI, -3.5; WMI, -2.7; PSI, -1.9; and FSIQ, -3.9). Children born SGA also had poorer academic achievement with lower language (5.3) and mathematic (2.5) scores. Adjustments for maternal factors and home environment attenuated the associations, but the differences in VCI, PRI, FSIQ, and language at 10-11 y remained significant. There were no differences in cognitive function and academic achievement between children born preterm and AGA. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight the enduring association of birth phenotype on cognitive functioning and academic achievement during the school years, despite adjustments for maternal education and family environment. Further research is needed to implement effective interventions to improve birth outcomes and optimize child health and development in LMICs. The association of genomic loci to the nuclear periphery is proposed to facilitate cell type-specific gene repression and influence cell fate decisions. However, the interplay between gene position and expression remains incompletely understood, in part because the proteins that position genomic loci at the nuclear periphery remain unidentified. Here, we used an Oligopaint-based HiDRO screen targeting ∼1000 genes to discover novel regulators of nuclear architecture in Drosophila cells. We identified the heterochromatin-associated protein Stonewall (Stwl) as a factor promoting perinuclear chromatin positioning. In female germline stem cells (GSCs), Stwl binds and positions chromatin loci, including GSC differentiation genes, at the nuclear periphery. Strikingly, Stwl-dependent perinuclear positioning is associated with transcriptional repression, highlighting a likely mechanism for Stwl's known role in GSC maintenance and ovary homeostasis. Thus, our study identifies perinuclear anchors in Drosophila and demonstrates the importance of gene repression at the nuclear periphery for cell fate.

Genome organization can regulate gene expression and promote cell fate transitions. The differentiation of germline stem cells (GSCs) to oocytes in Drosophila involves changes in genome organization mediated by heterochromatin and the nuclear pore complex (NPC). Heterochromatin represses germ cell genes during differentiation, and NPCs anchor these silenced genes to the nuclear periphery, maintaining silencing to allow for oocyte development. Surprisingly, we found that genome organization also contributes to NPC formation, mediated by the transcription factor Stonewall (Stwl). As GSCs differentiate, Stwl accumulates at boundaries between silenced and active gene compartments. Stwl at these boundaries plays a pivotal role in transitioning germ cell genes into a silenced state and activating a group of oocyte genes and nucleoporins (Nups). The upregulation of these Nups during differentiation is crucial for NPC formation and further genome organization. Thus, cross-talk between genome architecture and NPCs is essential for successful cell fate transitions.

This study examined the effects of exercise and detraining at a young age on fat accumulation in various organs. Four-week-old male Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats were assigned to either the non-exercise sedentary (OLETF Sed) or exercise groups. The exercise group was subdivided into two groups: exercise between 4 and 12 weeks of age (OLETF Ex) and exercise between 4 and 6 weeks of age followed by non-exercise between 6 and 12 weeks of age (OLETF DT). Body weight was significantly lower in the OLETF Ex group than in the OLETF Sed group at 12 weeks of age. Fat accumulation in the epididymal white adipose tissue, liver, and brown adipose tissue was suppressed in the OLETF Ex group. During the exercise period, body weight and food intake in the OLETF DT group were significantly lower than those in the OLETF Sed group. However, food intake was significantly higher in the OLETF DT group than in the OLETF Sed group after exercise cessation, resulting in extreme obesity with fatty liver and brown adipose tissue whitening. Detraining after early-onset exercise promotes hyperphagia, causing extreme obesity. Overeating should be avoided during detraining periods in cases of exercise cessation at a young age.

BACKGROUND: The duration of anticoagulation for a first episode of unprovoked venous thromboembolism (VTE) should balance the likelihood of VTE recurrence against the risk of major bleeding. OBJECTIVES: Analyze rates and case-fatality rates (CFRs) of recurrent VTE and major bleeding after discontinuing anticoagulation in patients with a first unprovoked VTE after at least 3 months of anticoagulation. METHODS: We compared the rates and CFRs in patients of the Registro Informatizado Enfermedad Trombo Embólica (RIETE) and Contemporary management and outcomes in patients with venous thromboembolism registries. We used logistic regression models to identify predictors for recurrent pulmonary embolism (PE) and major bleeding. RESULTS: Of 8261 patients with unprovoked VTE in RIETE registry, 4012 (48.6%) had isolated deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and 4250 had PE. Follow-up (median, 318 days) showed 543 recurrent DVTs, 540 recurrent PEs, 71 major bleeding episodes, and 447 deaths. The Contemporary management and outcomes in patients with venous thromboembolism registry yielded similar results. Corresponding CFRs of recurrent DVT, PE, and major bleeding were 0.4%, 4.6%, and 24%, respectively. On multivariable analyses, initial PE presentation (hazard ratio [HR], 3.03; 95% CI, 2.49-3.69), dementia (HR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.01-2.13), and anemia (HR, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.57-0.91) predicted recurrent PE, whereas older age (HR, 2.11; 95% CI, 1.15-3.87), inflammatory bowel disease (HR, 4.39; 95% CI, 1.00-19.3), and anemia (HR, 2.24; 95% CI, 1.35-3.73) predicted major bleeding. Prognostic scores were formulated, with C statistics of 0.63 for recurrent PE and 0.69 for major bleeding. CONCLUSION: Recurrent DVT and PE were frequent but had low CFRs (0.4% and 4.6%, respectively) after discontinuing anticoagulation. On the contrary, major bleeding was rare but had high CFR (24%). A few clinical factors may predict these outcomes.

We have developed AMRViz, a toolkit for analyzing, visualizing, and managing bacterial genomics samples. The toolkit is bundled with the current best practice analysis pipeline allowing researchers to perform comprehensive analysis of a collection of samples directly from raw sequencing data with a single command line. The analysis results in a report showing the genome structure, genome annotations, antibiotic resistance and virulence profile for each sample. The pan-genome of all samples of the collection is analyzed to identify core- and accessory-genes. Phylogenies of the whole genome as well as all gene clusters are also generated. The toolkit provides a web-based visualization dashboard allowing researchers to interactively examine various aspects of the analysis results. Background: To optimize the multiplex polymerase chain reaction (M-PCR) technique to diagnose microdeletions of azoospermia factors (AZF) on the Y chromosome and initially apply the technique to diagnose male patients with sperm density less than 5×106 million sperm/mL was assigned to do a test to check for AZF microdeletions on the Y chromosome. Methods: Based on the positive control samples which belong to male subjects who have had 2 healthy children without any assisted reproductive technologies, the M-PCR method was developed to detect simultaneously and accurately AZF microdeletions on 32 male patients with sperm densities below 5×106 million sperm/mL of semen at the Department of Biology and Medical Genetics - Vietnam Military Medical University. Results: Successful optimization of the M-PCR technique including 7 reactions arranged according to each AZFabc region using 24 STS/gene on the Y chromosome. Initial application to diagnose AZF deletion on 32 azoospermic and oligospermic men reveals that AZFa deletion accounts for 6.25% (2/32); deletion of all 3 regions AZFa,b,c with 18.75% (6/32 cases); The combined deletion rate of AZFb,c is highest, accounting for 56.24% (18/32 patients). Conclusion: Successfully optimized the M-PCR technique in identifying AZF microdeletions using 24 sequence tagged sites (STS)/gene for azoospermic and oligozoospermic men. The M-PCR technique has great potential in the application of AZF deletion diagnosis.

The global threat of antibiotic resistance has increased the importance of the detection of antibiotics. Conventional methods to detect antibiotics are time-consuming and require expensive specialized equipment. Here, we present a simple and rapid biosensor for detecting ampicillin, a commonly used antibiotic. Our method is based on the fluorescent properties of chitosan-coated Mn-doped ZnS micromaterials combined with the ß-lactamase enzyme. The biosensors exhibited the highest sensitivity in a linear working range of 13.1-72.2 pM with a limit of detection of 8.24 pM in deionized water. In addition, due to the biological specificity of ß-lactamase, the proposed sensors have demonstrated high selectivity over penicillin, tetracycline, and glucose through the enhancing and quenching effects at wavelengths of 510 nm and 614 nm, respectively. These proposed sensors also showed promising results when tested in various matrices, including tap water, bottled water, and milk. Our work reports for the first time the cost-effective (Mn:ZnS)Chitosan micromaterial was used for ampicillin detection. The results will facilitate the monitoring of antibiotics in clinical and environmental contexts.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the long-term outcomes of retroperitoneoscopic one-trocar-assisted pyeloplasty (OTAP) for ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) in children. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included 70 pediatric cases, all under the age of 5, diagnosed with UPJO and treated with the OTAP technique between May 2011 and June 2013 by a single surgeon. A single 10 mm operative scope with a 5 mm working channel was utilized to mobilize the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) and exteriorize it through the trocar insertion site. Subsequently, conventional Anderson-Hynes dismembered pyeloplasty was conducted extracorporeally. Patient's demographics, operative time, hospital stay, complications, and success rate were evaluated. RESULTS: Seventy pediatric patients (65 males and 5 females) underwent OTAP, with ages at the time of operation ranging from 1 month to 5 years (mean = 22.6 ± 18.6 months). The mean operative time was 74.8 ± 15.2 min. There was a significant reduction in the mean renal pelvis size from 34.3 ± 8.1 mm preoperatively to 13.8 ± 4.7 mm postoperatively (p < 0.05). Moreover, the mean differential renal function (DRF) increased from 47.9 ± 9.8% preoperatively to 51.2 ± 5.9% postoperatively (p < 0.05). All patients experienced an uneventful postoperative recovery, with a median hospital stay of 3.4 days. The success rate was 95.7%, with a median follow-up time of 75 months (range: 6-125 months). CONCLUSION: OTAP is a safe and feasible minimally invasive technique to correct ureteropelvic junction obstruction in children. It could be considered as a treatment of choice for children under the age of 5 as it combines the advantages of open and retroperitoneoscopic pyeloplasty and presents excellent long-term outcomes. OBJECTIVE: SEANUTS II Vietnam aims to obtain an in-depth understanding of the nutritional status and nutrient intake of children between 0.5-11.9 years old. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SETTING: A multistage cluster systematic random sampling method was implemented in different regions in Vietnam: North Mountainous, Central Highlands, Red River Delta, North Central and Coastal Area, Southeast and Mekong River Delta. PARTICIPANTS: 4001 children between 6 months and 11.9 years of age. RESULTS: Prevalence of stunting and underweight was higher in rural than in urban children, whereas overweight and obese rates were higher in urban areas. 12.0% of the children had anemia and especially children 0.5-1-year-old were affected (38.6%). Low serum retinol was found in 6.2% of children ≥ 4 years old. Prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency was 31.1% while 60.8% had low serum zinc. For nutrient intake, overall, 80.1% of the children did not meet the estimated energy requirements. For calcium intake, ∼60% of the younger children did not meet the RNI while it was 92.6% in children >7 years old. For vitamin D intake, 95.0% of the children did not meet RNI. CONCLUSIONS: SEANUTS II Vietnam indicated that overnutrition was more prevalent than undernutrition in urban areas, while undernutrition was found more in rural areas. The high prevalence of low serum zinc, vitamin D insufficiency and the inadequate intakes of calcium and vitamin D are of concern. Nutrition strategies for Vietnamese children should consider three sides of malnutrition and focus on approaches for the prevention malnutrition.

Purpose To develop a custom deep convolutional neural network (CNN) for noninvasive prediction of breast cancer nodal metastasis. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included patients with newly diagnosed primary invasive breast cancer with known pathologic (pN) and clinical nodal (cN) status who underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) breast MRI at the authors' institution between July 2013 and July 2016. Clinicopathologic data (age, estrogen receptor and human epidermal growth factor 2 status, Ki-67 index, and tumor grade) and cN and pN status were collected. A four-dimensional (4D) CNN model integrating temporal information from dynamic image sets was developed. The convolutional layers learned prognostic image features, which were combined with clinicopathologic measures to predict cN0 versus cN+ and pN0 versus pN+ disease. Performance was assessed with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), with fivefold nested cross-validation. Results Data from 350 female patients (mean age, 51.7 years ± 11.9 [SD]) were analyzed. AUC, sensitivity, and specificity values of the 4D hybrid model were 0.87 (95% CI: 0.83, 0.91), 89% (95% CI: 79%, 93%), and 76% (95% CI: 68%, 88%) for differentiating pN0 versus pN+ and 0.79 (95% CI: 0.76, 0.82), 80% (95% CI: 77%, 84%), and 62% (95% CI: 58%, 67%), respectively, for differentiating cN0 versus cN+. Conclusion The proposed deep learning model using tumor DCE MR images demonstrated high sensitivity in identifying breast cancer lymph node metastasis and shows promise for potential use as a clinical decision support tool. Vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) is a rare but dangerous side effect of adenoviral-vectored COVID-19 vaccines. VITT had been linked to production of autoantibodies recognizing platelet factor 4 (PF4). Here, we characterize anti-PF4 antibodies obtained from a VITT patient's blood. Intact mass measurements indicate that a significant fraction of these antibodies represent a limited number of clones. MS analysis of large antibody fragments (the light chain and the Fc/2 and Fd fragments of the heavy chain) confirms the monoclonal nature of this component of the anti-PF4 antibodies repertoire and reveals the presence of a mature complex biantennary N-glycan within the Fd segment. Peptide mapping using two complementary proteases and LC-MS/MS was used to determine the amino acid sequence of the entire light chain and over 98% of the heavy chain (excluding a short N-terminal segment). The sequence analysis allows the monoclonal antibody to be assigned to the IgG2 subclass and verifies that the light chain belongs to the λ-type. Incorporation of enzymatic de-N-glycosylation into the peptide mapping routine allows the N-glycan in the Fab region of the antibody to be localized to the framework 3 region of the VH domain. This novel N-glycosylation site is the result of a single mutation within the germline sequence. Peptide mapping also provides information on lower-abundance (polyclonal) components of the anti-PF4 antibody ensemble, revealing the presence of all four subclasses (IgG1-IgG4) and both types of the light chain (λ and κ). This case study demonstrates the power of combining the intact, middle-down, and bottom-up MS approaches for meaningful characterization of ultralow quantities of pathogenic antibodies extracted directly from patients' blood.

Gain-of-function mutations in the histone acetylation 'reader' ENL, found in AML and Wilms tumor, are known to drive condensate formation and gene activation in cellular systems. However, their role in tumorigenesis remains unclear. Using a conditional knock-in mouse model, we show that mutant ENL perturbs normal hematopoiesis, induces aberrant expansion of myeloid progenitors, and triggers rapid onset of aggressive AML. Mutant ENL alters developmental and inflammatory gene programs in part by remodeling histone modifications. Mutant ENL forms condensates in hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells at key leukemogenic genes, and disrupting condensate formation via mutagenesis impairs its chromatin and oncogenic function. Moreover, treatment with an acetyl-binding inhibitor of mutant ENL displaces these condensates from target loci, inhibits mutant ENL-induced chromatin changes, and delays AML initiation and progression in vivo. Our study elucidates the function of ENL mutations in chromatin regulation and tumorigenesis, and demonstrates the potential of targeting pathogenic condensates in cancer treatment.

Two-dimensional (2D) metallic TaSe2 and semiconducting WSe2 materials have been successfully fabricated in experiments and are considered as promising contact and channel materials, respectively, for the design of next-generation electronic devices. Herein, we design a metal-semiconductor (M-S) heterostructure combining metallic TaSe2 and semiconducting WSe2 materials and investigate the atomic structure, electronic properties and controllable contact types of the combined TaSe2/WSe2 M-S heterostructure using first-principles calculations. Our results reveal that the TaSe2/WSe2 M-S heterostructure can adopt four different stable stacking configurations, all of which exhibit enhanced elastic constants compared to the constituent monolayers. Furthermore, the TaSe2/WSe2 M-S heterostructure exhibits p-type Schottky contact (SC) with Schottky barriers ranging from 0.36 to 0.49 eV, depending on the stacking configurations. The TaSe2/WSe2 M-S heterostructure can be considered as a promising M-S contact for next-generation electronic Schottky devices owing to its small tunneling resistivity of about 2.14 × 10-9 Ω cm2. More interestingly, the TaSe2/WSe2 M-S heterostructure exhibits tunable contact types and contact barriers under the application of an electric field. A negative electric field induces a transition from Schottky contact type to ohmic contact (OC) type. On the other hand, a positive electric field leads to a transformation from p-type SC to n-type SC. Our findings provide valuable insights into the practical applications of the TaSe2/WSe2 M-S heterostructure towards next-generation electronic devices.

Background: Preterm and small for gestational age (SGA) remain significant public health concerns worldwide. Yet limited evidence exists on their growth patterns during childhood from low-or middle-income countries. Objectives: We investigated the postnatal growth patterns of preterm and SGA compared to term appropriate for gestational age (AGA) children from birth to 10-11y, and examined the impact of birth status on child nutritional status during the school age years. Methods: Children born to women who participated in a double-blinded randomized controlled trial of preconception micronutrient supplementation in Vietnam were classified into three groups: preterm AGA (n = 130), full-term SGA (n = 165) and full-term AGA (n = 1,072). Anthropometric data (weight and height) were collected prospectively at birth, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24 months and at 6-7 and 10-11y. We used ANOVA and multiple regression models to examine the differences in growth patterns from birth to 10-11y as well as child undernutrition and overnutrition by birth status. Results: Children who were born preterm exhibited rapid postnatal growth, but still had lower HAZ at 1y and 2y and showed catch up to the AGA group at 6y. Compared to those born AGA, SGA infants had higher risk of thinness (BMIZ < -2) at 2y and 6y (adjusted Odds Ratio, AOR [95% CI] 2.5 [1.0, 6.1] and 2.6 [1.4, 4.6], respectively); this risk reduced at 10-11y (1.6 [0.9, 2.8]). The risk of stunting (HAZ < -2) was also 2.4 [1.5, 3.8] and 2.3 times [1.2, 4.1] higher in SGA than AGA group at ages 2y and 6-7y, respectively, with no differences at 10y. Although preterm children had higher rates of thinness and stunting at 2y compared to AGA children, these differences were not statistically significant. No associations were found between preterm or SGA and overweight /obesity at age 10-11y. Conclusion: Children who were born term-SGA continued to demonstrate deficits in weight and height during childhood whereas those born preterm showed catch-up growth by age 6-7y. Additional efforts to reduce the burden of these conditions are needed, particularly during school-age and early adolescents when children are exposed to challenging environments and have higher demands for nutrition.

Microbial communities in mangrove forests have recently been intensively investigated to explain the ecosystem function of mangroves. In this study, the soil microbial communities under young (<11 years-old) and old (>17 years-old) mangroves have been studied during dry and wet seasons. In addition, biogeochemical properties of sediments and methane emission from the two different mangrove ages were measured. The results showed that young and old mangrove soil microbial communities were significantly different on both seasons. Seasons seem to affect microbial communities more than the mangrove age does. Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi were two top abundant phyla showing >15%. Physio-chemical properties of sediment samples showed no significant difference between mangrove ages, seasons, nor depth levels, except for TOC showing significant difference between the two seasons. The methane emission rates from the mangroves varied depending on seasons and ages of the mangrove. However, this did not show significant correlation with the microbial community shifts, suggesting that abundance of methanogens was not the driving factor for mangrove soil microbial communities.
