RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the predictive value of tumor markers combined with gastrin for tumor recurrence after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in patients with early gastric cancer. METHODS: The clinicopathological data of 169 patients with early gastric cancer treated with ESD between March 2019 and January 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into a relapse group (n=45) and a non-recurrence group (n=124). Clinical data such as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), cancer antigen 19-9 (CA19-9), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), gastrin 17, pepsinogen I and pepsinogen II, as well as tumor size and degree of infiltration were examined to construct a recurrence prediction model using lasso regression. RESULTS: The comprehensive model showed superior predictive power (AUC=0.958, C-index=0.966) over biomarker-only models (AUC=0.925), indicating a significant improvement in the prediction of recurrence risk. Decision curve analysis confirmed the clinical utility of the model with a maximum net benefit of 73.37%. Key indicators such as CEA, CA19-9, AFP, gastrin 17 and pepsinogens I and II were statistically significant in predicting recurrence with P values < 0.01. CONCLUSION: The comprehensive model combining tumor markers with clinical data provides a more accurate and clinically valuable tool for predicting recurrence in early gastric cancer patients after ESD. This approach facilitates personalized risk assessment and may significantly improve prognostic management, emphasizing the importance of a multifaceted strategy in the management of early gastric cancer.

RESUMEN

Efficient uranium capture from wastewater holds great importance for the environmental remediation and sustainable development of nuclear energy, but it is a tremendous challenge. Herein, a facile and scalable approach is reported to fabricate functionalized hierarchical porous polymers (PPN-3) decorated with high density of phosphate groups for uranium adsorption. The as-constructed hierarchical porous structure could allow rapid diffusion of uranyl ions, while abundant phosphate groups that serve as adsorption sites could provide the high affinity for uranyl. Consequently, PPN-3 shows a high uranium adsorption uptake of 923.06 mg g-1 and reaches adsorption equilibrium within simply 10 min in uranium-spiked aqueous solution. Moreover, PPN-3 affords selective adsorption of uranyl over multiple metal ions and possesses a rapid and high removal rate of U(VI) in real water systems. Furthermore, this study offers direct polymerization strategy for the cost-effective fabrication of phosphate-functionalized porous organic polymers, which may provide promising application potential for uranium extraction.

RESUMEN

Highly selective capture of cesium (Cs+) from complex aqueous solutions has become increasingly important owing to its (133Cs) indispensable role in some cutting-edge technologies and the environmental mobility of radioactive nuclide (137Cs) from nuclear wastewater. Herein, we report the development of cation-intercalated lamellar MoS2 as an effective Cs+ adsorbent with the advantages of facile synthesis and highly tunable layer spacing. Two types of cations, including Na+ and NH4+, were employed for the intercalations between adjacent layers of MoS2. The results demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of the NH4+-intercalated material (M-NH4+, 134 mg/g) for Cs+ clearly outperformed the others due to higher loading percentages of cations and larger layer spacing. The cesium partition coefficients for M-NH4+ in the presence of 100-fold competing ions all exceed 1 × 103 mL/g. A simulated complex aqueous solution containing 15.37 mg/L Cs+ and highly excess of competing ions Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ (20-306 times higher) was introduced to prove the practical application potential using our best-performing M-NH4+, showing a good to excellent partition ability of Cs+ among other cations, especially for Cs/K and Cs/Na with separation factors of 58 and 212, respectively. The adsorption and selectivity mechanisms were clearly elucidated using various advanced techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. These results revealed that the good selectivity for Cs+ can be ascribed to the differences in Lewis acidities, hydration energy, cation sizes, and in particular, the divergence of coordination modes which was successfully achieved after tuning the layer distance via the cation intercalation strategy. In addition, the material has fast kinetics (<30 min), wide range of pH tolerance (4-10), and good reusability. Overall, our studies point out that the tunable lamellar MoS2-based materials are promising adsorbents for Cs+ capture and separation.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Transmission-target x-ray tubes generate more x-rays than reflection thick-target x-ray tubes. A transmission x-ray tube combined with radiosensitizers has a better radiation enhancement effect. This study investigated the feasibility of using a transmission x-ray tube with radiosensitizers in clinical radiotherapy and its effect on radiation dose enhancement. METHODS: This study used MCNP6.2 to simulate the model of a transmission x-ray tube and Co-60 beam.   The radiation enhancement effect of radiosensitizers was examined with iodine-127 (I-127), radioiodinated iododeoxyuridine (IUdR), and gold nanoparticles (GNPs). RESULTS: The study results showed that the dose enhancement factor (DEF) of the transmission x-ray tube with GNPs was 10.27, which was higher than that of I-127 (6.46) and IUdR (3.08). The DEF of the Co-60 beam with GNPs, I-127, and IUdR was 1.23, 1.19, and 1.2, respectively. The Auger electron flux of the transmission x-ray tube with GNPs was 1.19E+05 particles/cm2 . CONCLUSIONS: This study found that a transmission x-ray tube with appropriate radiosensitizers could produce a high rate of Auger electrons to fulfill the radiation enhancement effect, and this procedure has the potential to become a radiotherapy modality.

RESUMEN

Developing high-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of importance for improving the overall efficiency of water splitting. Herein, the CoFe/(CoxFe1-x)3Mo3C heterojunction is purposely designed as an OER catalyst, which displays a low overpotential of 293 mV for affording a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 48 mV/dec. Various characterization results demonstrate that the significant work-function difference between CoFe and (CoxFe1-x)3Mo3C can induce interfacial charge redistribution, which results in the formation of Co and Fe sites with a high-spin state, thus stimulating the surface phase reconstruction of CoFe/(CoxFe1-x)3Mo3C to corresponding active oxyhydroxide. Meanwhile, the electrochemical leaching of Mo ions from the initial structure can contribute to the formation of defective sites, further benefiting OH- adsorption and surface oxidation. Moreover, the remaining CoFe can accelerate electron migration during the electrocatalytic process. This study presents new insights into constructing efficient OER electrocatalysts with an optimized spin-state configuration via interfacial engineering.

RESUMEN

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a serious disease with a high incidence rate and mortality. Inflammation is closely related to the occurrence of CVDs. As an essential medicine of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis in China, Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (Danshen) is widely used to treat CVDs due to its anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular protective effects. Salvianolic acids are the most abundant component in the water extract of S. miltiorrhiza, which has a significant effect on the treatment of CVDs. However, due to the complex composition of salvianolic acids, the active molecules and their underlying mechanisms have not been fully explored. AIM OF THIS STUDY: The present study aims to isolate and identify salvianolic acids from Danshen with anti-inflammatory activity and explore the potential mechanisms of isolates. METHODS: The structures of isolated salvianolic acids were elucidated by UV, IR, NMR, MS and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations. Then anti-inflammatory activities of isolates were screened out by the zebrafish inflammation models. The most active compound was further used to explore the anti-inflammatory mechanisms on LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. The key inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The protein expression levels of STAT3, p-STAT3 (Tyr705), NF-κB p65, IκBα, p-IκBα (Ser32) and α7nAchR were determined by Western blotting. The nuclear translocation of p-STAT3 (Tyr705) and NF-κB p65 was evaluated by immunofluorescence assays. Finally, the in vivo anti-inflammatory mechanisms were investigated by observation of neutrophil migration, H&E staining, survival analysis and quantitative PCR (Q-PCR) in LPS-microinjected zebrafish. RESULTS: Two new and four known compounds were isolated from Danshen. Among them, isosalvianolic acid A-1 (C1) and ethyl lithospermate (C5) inhibited neutrophil migrations in three zebrafish inflammation models and C1 with the best activities decreased the secretion of IL-6 and TNF-α and inhibited the expression level of p-IκBα (Ser32) in LPS stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. In addition, C1 also reduced the nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 and p-STAT3 (Tyr705). Moreover, C1 significantly upregulated the protein expression of α7nAchR, and the knockdown of α7nAchR counteracted the effects of C1 on the production of IL-6 and TNF-α and the expression levels of p-STAT3 (Tyr705), NF-κB p65 and p-IκBα (Ser32). In vivo experiments, C1 decreased the migration and infiltration of inflammatory cells, increased the survival ratio and inhibited the mRNA level of IL-6, TNF-α, STAT3, NF-κB and IκBα in LPS-microinjected zebrafish. CONCLUSION: Two new and four known compounds were isolated from Danshen. Among them, C1 exerted anti-inflammatory activities by activating α7nAchR signaling and subsequently inhibiting STAT3 and NF-κB pathways. This study provided evidence for the clinical application of Danshen and contributed to the development of C1 as a novel in the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

RESUMEN

(1) Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiation awareness level of the public in Taiwan. (2) Methods: This study designed an online survey form to investigate the radiation awareness level with six topics: basic knowledge of radiation, environmental radiation, medical radiation, radiation protection, and university/corporate social responsibility. The score of respondents were converted into knowledge and responsibility indexes for the quantitative evaluation. Logistic regression was used to assess the correlation between the knowledge index and individual factors. Paired t-test was used to assess the significant difference in knowledge index between pre-training and post-training. (3) Results: The knowledge index of each job category reflected the proportion of radiation awareness of the job. The logistic regression result indicated that radiation-related people could get higher knowledge index. The paired t-test indicated that the knowledge index before and after class had significant differences in all question topics. (4) Conclusions: The public's awareness of medical radiation was the topic that needed to be strengthened the most-the responses with high knowledge index significantly correlated with their experience in radiation education training or radiation-related jobs. It significantly increased the knowledge index of radiation if the public received radiation education training.

RESUMEN

Panax notoginseng has been used both as a traditional medicine and as a functional food for hundreds of years in Asia. However, the active constituents from P. notoginseng and their pharmacologic properties still need to be further explored. In this study, one new dammarane-type triterpenoid saponin (1), along with fourteen known analogs (2-15) were isolated and identified from the roots of P. notoginseng. The anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenetic and anti-dengue virus effects of these isolated compounds were further evaluated. Compounds 1, 3, 5-7 and 10-12 exerted anti-inflammatory effects in two different zebrafish inflammatory models. Among them, 11, with the most significant activities, alleviated the inflammatory response by blocking the MyD88/NF-κB and STAT3 pathways. Moreover, compound 15 showed anti-angiogenetic activities in Tg(fli1:EGFP) and Tg(flk1:GFP) zebrafish, while 3 and 5 only inhibited angiogenesis in Tg(fli1:EGFP) zebrafish. Additionally, compounds 1, 3, 6, 8, 9 and 12 suppressed the replication of dengue virus either at the viral adsorption and entry stages or at the intracellular replication step. In conclusion, these findings enrich knowledge of the diversity of saponins in P. notoginseng and suggest that the dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins from P. notoginseng may be developed as potential functional foods to treat inflammation, angiogenesis or dengue-related diseases.

RESUMEN

Background: Problematic smartphone use is widespread, and college-age youth faces an especially high risk of its associated consequences. While a promising body of research has emerged in recent years in this area, the domination of quantitative inquiries can be fruitfully and conceptually complemented by perspectives informed through qualitative research. Toward that end, this study aimed to interrogate the myriad behavioral, attitudinal, and psychological tendencies as a side effect of college students' engagement with the smartphone in their everyday lived experience through in-depth interviews. Methods: We recruited 70 participants from seven college campuses hailing from different geographic regions in China, and conducted semi-structured in-depth virtual interviews via WeChat in November and December 2020. Subjective experiences, personal narratives and individual perceptions in the context of routine interaction with the smartphone were thematically analyzed through a reiterative process in an effort to detect prevailing threads and recurring subthemes. Results: The smartphone has established a pervasive presence in college students' everyday life. Time-based use characteristics generated a typology of four distinct user groups: hypo-connected antagonists, balanced majority, hyper-connected enthusiasts, and indulgent zealots. Habitual usage falls on predictable patterns matched onto temporal, locale-based and contextual cues and triggers. Students' dependency relationships with the smartphone have both functional and emotional dimensions, as prominently manifested in occasions of detachment from the device. Self-regulatory effort in monitoring and limiting use is significantly impacted by mental focus and personal goal setting. Perspectives from our qualitative data suggest the need for taking into account a variety of contextual cues and situational factors in dissecting psychological and emotional outcomes of smartphone use and abuse.

RESUMEN

In recent years, severe air pollution has had a serious impact on the health and economy of residents and has attracted great attention. Due to the spatial separation between consumption and production, the transfer of PM2.5 pollution and its health and economic effects caused by interprovincial trade have not been taken seriously. In this study, economic, atmospheric, and epidemiological models were combined to assess air pollution transfer and its health and economic impacts that are attributed to provincial trade in China. The analyses were performed under the PM2.5 transfer scenario in which economically developed areas in eastern China transferred many health and economic impacts to inland areas through interprovincial trade in 2012. As a result of interprovincial trade, 1980 (95% CI 0, 4114) extra deaths and 208,000 (95% CI 74.5, 395.6) additional illnesses accrued, but 0.184 (95% CI 0.017, 0.372) billion USD of residents' economic loss was avoided in China. The results illustrate the serious impact of domestic trade on regional health and economics. It is necessary to comprehensively consider supply chains in designing policies to mitigate the negative health and economic impacts of air pollution across China.

RESUMEN

Monofluorinated alkyl compounds are of great importance in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and materials. Herein, we describe a direct nickel-catalyzed monofluoromethylation of unactivated alkyl halides using a low-cost industrial raw material, bromofluoromethane, by demonstrating a general and efficient reductive cross-coupling of two alkyl halides. Results with 1-bromo-1-fluoroalkane also demonstrate the viability of monofluoroalkylation, which further established the first example of reductive C(sp3 )-C(sp3 ) cross-coupling fluoroalkylation. These transformations demonstrate high efficiency, mild conditions, and excellent functional-group compatibility, especially for a range of pharmaceuticals and biologically active compounds. Mechanistic studies support a radical pathway. Kinetic studies reveal that the reaction is first-order dependent on catalyst and alkyl bromide whereas the generation of monofluoroalkyl radical is not involved in the rate-determining step. This strategy provides a general and efficient method for the synthesis of aliphatic fluorides.

RESUMEN

Exploiting precious-metal-free and high-activity oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts has been in great demands toward many energy storage and conversion processes, for example, carbon dioxide reduction, metal-air batteries, and water splitting. In this study, the simple solid-state method is employed for coupling Ni (electron donors) with lower-Fermi-level MoO2 or WOx (electron acceptors) into donor-acceptor ensembles with well-designed interfaces as robust electrocatalysts for OER. The resulting Ni/MoO2 and Ni/WOx electrocatalysts exhibit smaller overpotentials of 287 and 333 mV at 10 mA cm-2 as well as smaller Tafel slopes of 51 and 65 mV/dec, respectively, with respect to the single Ni, MoO2, WOx, and even the benchmark RuO2 in 1 M KOH. Specially, on account of a higher Fermi level of Ni in comparison with MoO2 and WOx, their strong electronic interaction results in directional interfacial electron transfer and increases the hole density over Ni, dramatically enriching the population of high-valence Ni3+ active sites and decreasing the Fermi level of Ni. The existence of Ni3+ can strengthen the chemisorption of OH-, and the downshift of the Ni Fermi level can significantly expedite migration of electrons toward the surface of catalysts during OER, thus synergistically boosting the OER catalytic performance. Furthermore, the inner Ni/MoO2 and Ni/WOx heterostructures and the electrochemically induced surface layers of oxides/hydroxides collectively boost the OER kinetics. This study highlights the importance of designing highly efficient OER electrocatalysts with high-valence active species (Ni3+) and better matched energy levels induced by the work function difference through interfacial engineering.

RESUMEN

The trifluoromethyl group represents one of the most functional and widely used fluoroalkyl groups in drug design and screening, while the drug candidates containing chiral trifluoromethyl-bearing carbons are still few due to the lack of efficient methods for the asymmetric introduction of trifluoromethyl group into organic molecules. Herein, we described a nickel-catalyzed asymmetric trifluoroalkylation of aryl iodides, for the first time, by utilizing reductive cross-coupling in enantioselective fluoroalkylation. This novel method has demonstrated high efficiency, mild conditions, and excellent functional group tolerance, especially for substrates containing diverse pharmaceutical and bioactive molecules moieties. This strategy provided an efficient and facile way for diversity-oriented synthesis of chiral trifluoromethylated alkanes.

RESUMEN

Changes of maximum expiratory flow at 25% and 50% of vital capacity (MEF25 and MEF50, respectively), and predominant parameters indicating small airways function in asthmatics before and after bronchodilator (BD) reversibility test have been less interpreted. Our study aimed to investigate the clinical role of changes of MEF25 and MEF50 before and after BD reversibility test in diagnosing asthma. Forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), MEF25, and MEF50 were measured before and after BD reversibility test in 207 asthmatic patients using standard process. Forty healthy individuals were enrolled as controls. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to assess the diagnostic accuracy of reversibility of MEF25 and MEF50 before and after BD reversibility test (ΔMEF25% and ΔMEF50%, respectively) in diagnosing asthma. Among these functional criteria, ΔMEF25% and ΔMEF50% ≥ 25% performed the best diagnostic performance. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of ΔMEF25% ≥ 25% as an objective diagnostic test for asthma were 63.29%, 87.50%, and 67.21%, and of ΔMEF50% ≥ 25% were 79.23%, 85.00%, and 80.16%, respectively. The area under the ROC curve of the indicators was 0.8203 and 0.9104, respectively. By contrast, an increase in FEV1 ≥ 12% and 200 mL demonstrated a sensitivity of 62.32%, specificity of 82.50%, and accuracy of 65.59% in diagnosing asthma. The changes of MEF25 and MEF50 before and after BD reversibility test may be of additional value in the clinical diagnosis of asthma, with cutoff values of 25% being the most.

RESUMEN

Positive bronchodilation (BD) tests can be noticed in some stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. The characteristics of airway inflammation in this entity remain unclear. Our study aimed to identify the characteristics of airway inflammation in stable COPD patients with positive BD tests. The airway inflammation was assessed in 88 patients with stable COPD using the examination of induced sputum in the aftermath of lung function and BD tests. Cellular counts and the levels of molecular markers including eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), myeloperoxidase (MPO), interleukin-5 (IL-5), and IL-8 were assayed by Wright's stain, Immuno-CAP system, and ELISA, RT-PCR. Among the 88 patients with stable COPD, 20 (22.7%) showed positive BD tests. The values of eosinophils (4.7%±3.4%) and ECP (90.1±41.6 ng/mL) in induced sputum in stable COPD patients with positive BD tests were markedly elevated as compared with those in stable COPD patients with negative BD tests or in healthy controls (all P>0.05), but significantly lower than those in asthmatic patients (all P<0.01). The IL-5 in sputum supernatant was significantly decreased in stable COPD patients with positive BD tests as compared with the patients with asthma (12.5±7.8 vs. 48.2±26.0 ng/mL;.P<0.01). However, healthy controls exhibited similar concentrations of IL-5 in induced sputum with patients with stable COPD, whether with positive or negative BD tests (all P>0.05). Moreover, the values of neutrophils (61.8%±15.1%), MPO (574.0±111.8 ng/mL), and IL-8 (32.6±13.4 ng/mL) in induced sputum in stable COPD patients with positive BD tests were significantly higher than those in asthmatics or normal controls (all P<0.01). However, the values of the above inflammatory markers in induced sputum were similar among stable COPD patients with positive or negative BD tests (all P>0.05). The stable COPD patients with positive BD tests may present not only eosinophilic airway inflammation but also neutrophilic airway inflammation.

RESUMEN

A novel fast-responsive two-photon fluorescent probe NS-ClO was constructed for imaging endogenous HClO in living cells, tissues and fresh zebrafish with a large turn-on signal (about 860 times) and Stokes shift (about 90 nm). The probe NS-ClO for the recognition of HClO in vivo exhibited fast response (about 1 min) and good selectivity; thus, it might be a useful tool to understand the role of HClO in various physiological processes.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors on female breast cancer in Zhejiang province. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in 200 cases of female breast cancer with histopathological diagnosis and 200 matched controls from Zhejiang province. RESULTS: Univariate conditional logistic regression showed that family history of malignant tumor and breast cancer, housing decoration in last 10 years, mammary hyperplasia, adverse life events, bra with steel rings, sleeping with bra, high fat and pickle intake, poor sleep were positively related to breast cancer; whereas environmental friendly decoration materials, long decoration time interval, workplace condition, more lactation and parity, high fruits intake, sufficient sleep were negatively related to breast cancer. Multivariate conditional logistic regression analysis showed that the risk factors included family history of other tumors [odds ratio (OR)= 1.571,95% confidence interval(CI):1.029-2.396],mammary hyperplasia (OR=3.066,95%CI:1.834-5.126), job-related life events (OR=4.575,95%CI:1.690-12.390),the death of a loved one (OR=2.555,95%CI:1.475-4.424), wearing bra at night (OR=1.902,95%CI:1.177-3.072),high fat intake (OR=2.709,95%CI:1.546-4.749) and salted food (OR=2.460,95%CI:1.300-4.653). Factors as environmental friendly decoration materials (OR=0.517,95%CI:0.339-0.789),workplaces condition (OR=0.430,95%CI:0.243-0.762),more lactation (OR=0.109,95%CI:0.013-0.896),enough sleep (OR=0.424,95%CI:0.205-0.880) were protective factors. CONCLUSION: Hereditary, psychological factors, lifestyle, environment and diet related factors are significantly associated with risk of breast cancer.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential association between 163A/G and 950T/C polymorphisms of osteoprotegerin (OPG) gene and severe pre-eclampsia. METHODS: Eighty-five severe pre-eclamptic patients and 81 normal term pregnant women (as control group) were recruited from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University during the period from July 2007 to March 2009, and they were all Han population living in Chengdu, China. Genotype and allele frequencies of 163A/G and 950T/C were determined by the PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) assay. Clinical and biochemical parameters for different alleles between the patients and controls were compared for statistical significance respectively, such as blood pressure, serum creatinine and 24-hour urine protein. RESULTS: The observed and expected genotype counts were consistent with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. No significant differences were found in the genotype and allele frequencies of 163A/G and 950T/C polymorphisms between the two groups (P > 0.05). However, in the preeclamptic group, serum creatinine was significantly higher in women with the AG + GG genotypes [(76 ± 24) µmol/L] compared with AA genotype [(56 ± 18) µmol/L]. Reversely, birth weight was lower in the AG + GG genotypes [(2040 ± 721) g] than those in the AA genotype [(2520 ± 810) g], and the P < 0.05, respectively. In the severe pre-eclampsia, 950T/C TT genotype carriers exhibited significantly higher systolic blood pressure [(153 ± 16) mm Hg (1 mm Hg = 0.133 kPa)] and 24-hour urine protein [(4.0 ± 2.5) g] compared with TT + TC carriers [(145 ± 17) mm Hg, (2.9 ± 1.8) g], respectively, furthermore the P < 0.05. CONCLUSIONS: In severe pre-eclampsia, carriers with G allele at position 163A/G has more genetic predisposition than A allele carriers, as well as 950T/C T allele carriers compared with C carriers. Taken together, this study suggested that OPG gene polymorphisms might be associated with some clinical parameters of severe pre-eclampsia.
