Currently obesity has been a disease of great expansion in the population. Among the therapeutic alternatives, the use of plants with thermogenic property has been commonly adopted by population. The Citrus aurantium L., known as bitter orange has been an alternative to weight loss, however it is postulated that its use may cause toxicological liver damage, tachycardia and increased blood pressure. Objective: evaluate the changes in body weight, food intake and lipid biochemical profile. Methodology: 20 swiss mice, females and adults divided into: Control Group (n = 10) treated with water and Orange Group (n = 10) treated with aqueous extract of bitter orange in a daily dosage of 1.2g/day. The administration was by gavage for 30 days. Both groups were submitted to swimming three times per week and weighted weekly. Food consumption was also measured daily. After euthanasia, blood was collected by cardiac puncture for biochemical exams. Results: as for weighted variation, the two groups showed significant loss (Control Group: p = 0.003 / Orange Group: p = 0.027) in weight, which was possibly due to swimming and not by the plant extract (difference between the Control Group and Orange Group was not significant, with p = 0.308). No changes were observed in the lipid profile and food intake in both groups. Conclusion: according to data obtained, the aqueous extract Citrus aurantium L. did not show thermogenic potential and did not affect the lipid profile of the treated animals in 30 days...

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the healing of autogenous onlay bone grafts in three different situations, focusing on the interface area. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixteen rabbits underwent autogenous bone graft surgeries in the calvaria. The block bone grafts were positioned in three different situations: direct contact between bone graft and receptor bed, graft interposed by particulate bone, and graft interposed by platelet-rich plasma (PRP). After 7, 15, 30, and 60 days, the specimens were retrieved for histological and morphometric evaluation. RESULTS: All groups healed uneventfully and presented incorporation of the grafts after 30 days. A slightly more evident new bone formation could be observed in the PRP group in the first analyzed period, and an earlier maturation of bone in the last period, although no statistically significant differences were achieved. CONCLUSION: The use of additional material between the bone graft and the receptor bed when using the onlay technique must be carefully considered, taking into account the size of the reconstruction and the cost/benefit relation. The addition of PRP in between autogenous bone blocks and the receptor bed did not confer significant benefit for the new bone formation and healing on the calvaria of bone of rabbits.

The G6PD and 6PGD enzymes are responsible for the generation of NADPH supply necessary for the detoxification of the oxidant agents produced during the oxidative metabolic stress on erythrocytes. Due to the high prevalence of the deficiency of G6PD on world population, especially on Afro descents, many studies have been done trying to know better the actuation of these enzymes. The goal of this study was to evaluate the 6PGD enzymatic activity on a population with G6PD deficiency, to verify if there is an elevation of the activity of this enzyme, and try to correlate to a possible increase on the number of reticulocytes or the presence of alterations on red series. The research with 2657 male individuals detected 97 deficient for G6PD, which determined a 3.65 percent prevalence for the Bauru (SP) region, with mean enzymatic activity of 1.74 UI.g Hb-1. min-1 at 37°C, 14,4 percent of the normal G6PD activity. Mean 6PGD enzymatic activity was 9.5 UI.g Hb-1. min-1 at 37°C, and was elevated in 47.4 percent of the G6PD deficient individuals. The result obtained did not confirm the hypothesis that the elevation of the 6PGD enzymatic activity, in G6PD deficient individuals, was due to the presence of an increase of reticulocytes in blood stream, age or erythrocytometric alterations that could denote anemia. The most plausible theory is that the auto-limited hemolysis, imposed by oxidative processes, preserves young erythrocytes that have an elevated enzymatic activity, as naturally these enzymes lose activity with cellular aging.

RESUMEN

The aim of the study was to evaluate wound healing repair of dental sockets after topical application of 5% epsilon-aminocaproic acid (EACA) and the use of fibrin adhesive implant in rats under anticoagulant therapy with warfarin. Sixty Albinus wistar rats were used, divided into three groups of 20. In Group I, the animals were given 0.1 mL/100 mg of 0.9% saline solution per day, beginning 6 days before dental extraction and continuing throughout the experimental period. In Group II, the animals received 0.03 mL of sodium warfarin daily, beginning 6 days before the surgery and continuing until the day of sacrifice; after tooth extractions, the sockets were filled with fibrin adhesive material. In Group III the animals were treated as in Group II, and after extractions, the sockets were irrigated with 5 mL of 5% EACA and filled with the same fibrin adhesive material. All groups presented biological phases of wound healing repair, the differences being evident only in the chronology. The results obtained in Group III were very similar to those of Group I in the last period of wound repair, whereas Group II presented a late chronology compared to the other groups.
