The activation of an inert C(sp3)-H bond in selective oxidation of hydrocarbons under mild conditions is a critical and challenging process. Herein, we report a stable chlorine-coordinated metal-organic framework (MOF) photocatalyst, MIL-101(Fe), for efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde in air under ambient conditions. Encouragingly, a benzaldehyde formation yield of 3.11 mmol·g-1·h-1 with a selectivity of 92.1% is achieved in 5 h, which is superior to most of the reported works. Based on the experimental results and characterizations, the high catalytic performance is mainly due to the promoted rate-limiting step of C(sp3)-H bond activation by a chlorine radical (Cl·) from the coordinated -Cl in the MIL-101(Fe) structure. In addition, the present photocatalyst possesses good substrate tolerance for photocatalytic selective oxidation of various toluene derivatives under optimized conditions.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The plants in the genus Erigeron are known to exhibit antiviral activities, including those against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). In traditional medicine Erigeron annuus (L.) Pers (EA) has been used in the treatment of pulmonary diseases and acute infectious hepatitis. AIM OF THIS STUDY: The aim of this study is to determine the optimum extraction method to produce the most potent anti-RSV extract, elucidate its mode and mechanisms of antiviral activity in both in vitro and in vivo models, and identify the chemical structures of the bioactive compounds. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The whole plant of EA was extracted with ethyl acetate, methanol, ethanol, water, aqueous methanol (60, 80% and 100%) and aqueous ethanol (50, 75% and 95%) using maceration, reflux, and ultrasound-assisted extraction methods. The antiviral activities of the extracts were determined in vitro. The in vitro antiviral activities of the extracts were determined using Hep-2 cells. Four in vitro experiments were performed to determine the mode of antiviral activity of the most active extract, ethyl acetate fraction (EAE) of Erigeron annuus whole plant extract prepared by refluxing with 50% ethanol, by examining its ability to inactivate the virus directly, inhibit viral adsorption and penetration, inhibit viral replication and preventive effect. The effect of temperature and duration of treatment on these modes of action was also determined. The antiviral activity of the EAE was also assessed in vivo in a mouse model. The lung index, viral load, and lung tissue histology were measured. qRT-PCR and ELISA studies were performed to determine the expression of key genes (TLR-3 and TLR-4) and proteins (IL-2, IFN-γ, and TNF-α) related to RSV infection. The most active antiviral compound was isolated using chromatography techniques, and its chemical structure was identified through electrospray triple quadrupole mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. RESULTS: The EAE was the most active on RSV. In vitro experiments showed that the antiviral activity of EAE is via direct inactivation, inhibition of entry, and inhibition of the proliferation of the virus. In vivo experiments showed that the EAE effectively inhibited the proliferation of RSV in the lungs and alleviated the lung tissue lesions in RSV-infected mice. The antiviral activity of the EAE is mediated by downregulating the expression of TLR3 and TLR4 in the lung, upregulating the expression of IL-2 and IFN-γ, and downregulating the expression of TNF-α. Apigenin 7-O-methylglucuronide was found to be a major bioactive compound in EAE. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study confirmed the antiviral activity of EA by inactivating, inhibiting the entry, and inhibiting the proliferation of RSV. The activity is mediated by regulating the immunity and inflammatory mediators. Apigenin 7-O-methylglucuronide is the bioactive compound present in EA.

Clinical evidence indicates a close association between muscle dysfunction and bone loss; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we report that muscle dysfunction-related bone loss in humans with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy is associated with decreased expression of folliculin-interacting protein 1 (FNIP1) in muscle tissue. Supporting this finding, murine gain- and loss-of-function genetic models demonstrated that muscle-specific ablation of FNIP1 caused decreased bone mass, increased osteoclastic activity, and mechanical impairment that could be rescued by myofiber-specific expression of FNIP1. Myofiber-specific FNIP1 deficiency stimulated expression of nuclear translocation of transcription factor EB, thereby activating transcription of insulin-like growth factor 2 (Igf2) at a conserved promoter-binding site and subsequent IGF2 secretion. Muscle-derived IGF2 stimulated osteoclastogenesis through IGF2 receptor signaling. AAV9-mediated overexpression of IGF2 was sufficient to decrease bone volume and impair bone mechanical properties in mice. Further, we found that serum IGF2 concentration was negatively correlated with bone health in humans in the context of osteoporosis. Our findings elucidate a muscle-bone cross-talk mechanism bridging the gap between muscle dysfunction and bone loss. This cross-talk represents a potential target to treat musculoskeletal diseases and osteoporosis.

We have perused with keen interest the scholarly article titled "Exploring the Unknown: Evaluating ChatGPT's Performance in Uncovering Novel Aspects of Plastic Surgery and Identifying Areas for Future Innovation" penned by Lim et al. in the esteemed journal "Aesthetic Plastic Surgery". This paper evaluates ChatGPT's potential application in plastic surgery, exploring its responses on various themes including pioneers, advancements, and techniques, as well as flap grafting. While it offers valuable insights, questions arise. Firstly, ChatGPT's attribution of plastic surgery's progenitor to Sir Harold Delf Gillies raises concerns of underlying biases in its responses. Secondly, its assertion on paramount contributions prompts reflection on its discernment criteria. Can targeted training enhance its accuracy? Lastly, the discourse questions biases favoring reconstructive over cosmetic procedures. ChatGPT's responses, while proficient in addressing medical queries, face ongoing veracity challenges, necessitating clinician scrutiny. However, this scrutiny may surpass user expertise, requiring additional measures for accuracy assurance. Artificial Intelligence (AI) replicates human cognitive abilities but lacks human richness, potentially affecting transformative insights in plastic surgery's future trajectory. This experiment aimed to explore the influence mechanism of external fixator on open fracture. A total of 128 patients with open tibiofibular fractures were included in this study. The patients were randomly divided into external fixator group (n=64) and control group (n=64) according to the order of admission. Double-blind controlled observation was used. The levels of osteocalcin (BGP), ß-CTX, P1 NP, BALP, including haptoglobin (Hp), ceruloplasmin (CER), serum adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol (COR), C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell (WBC) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were recorded in different groups. The postoperative VAS score and quality of life were recorded. Log-rank was used to analyze the difference in postoperative adverse reaction rates among different groups. External fixation stent treatment increased BGP, PINP, and BALP expression and decreased ß-CTX, Hp, CER, ACTH, COR, CRP, WBC, and IL-6 levels. Patients in the external fixation stent group had significantly lower VAS score quality of life scores and incidence of adverse events than the control group. External fixation stents protect open fracture patients by promoting bone metabolism.

OBJECTIVES: Ranunculus L. genus contains 413 species, and it is the biggest genus in the family Ranunculaceae Juss. This review is to provide botanical characteristics, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicity, and pharmaceutical preparations of the genus Ranunculus. KEY FINDINGS: The genus Ranunculus contains flavonoids, organic acids, coumarins, lactones, glycosides, sterols, polysaccharides, and trace elements. These chemical constituents complement the pharmacological actions and work together to exert anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antitubercular, antibacterial, antimalarial, etc. Those traditional Chinese medicine characteristics, like clearing away heat and detoxification, make this genus significant in ethnic medicine. The progress in research and the development of various pharmaceutical preparations made it appear in epidemiological and clinical studies. SUMMARY: The genus Ranunculus has attracted the attention of experts and scholars in many fields due to its unique advantages. However, there are many species that are not scientifically investigated. The toxicity issues are also a huge concern. Fortunately, the toxicity can be overcome via special processes like drying or heating and by choosing a safe extraction solvent, such as water thus ensuring the safety of medication. Pharmaceutical preparations containing the plants from Ranunculus have gratifying clinical value, but they are not promoted sufficiently. Therefore, further research should be carried out to promote the genus for its health benefits to humans.

OBJECTIVE: A flat superciliary arch is relatively common in East Asian women. Superciliary arch augmentation aims to increase the facial three-dimensionality of the upper face. However, there are few reports in the literature specifically introducing the surgery. In this study, the authors present the clinical outcomes after a series of superciliary arch augmentation with silicone implants. METHODS: From May 2020 to December 2022, 54 patients underwent superciliary arch augmentation with silicone implants. Silicone implants generally have a length of 50 to 60 mm, a width of 13 to 14 mm, and an arc of 170 degrees. The thickness was 2 to 7 mm. The implant was placed subperiosteal at the lower edges of the eyebrows through a 7 mm incision below the brow tail. All patients evaluated the outcome according to the Global Esthetic Improvement Scale. Four plastic surgeons evaluated postsurgery results with a 5-point Likert Scale (5 = excellent, 4 = good, 3 = fair, 2 = no change, and 1 = worse). RESULTS: Fifty-four patients were successfully enrolled. The mean follow-up period was 12.02 ± 3.38 months. The mean thickness was 4.55 ± 0.67 mm for the thickest part of the implant. The minor complication rate was 44.44%. They all subsided within 1 month without treatment. Patients' outcome ratings were 4.45 ± 0.55 (3 mo), 4.51 ± 0.48 (6 mo), and 4.51 ± 0.45 (1 y). The surgeons' outcome scoring was 4.49 ± 0.31. CONCLUSIONS: Superciliary arch augmentation with silicone implants is a quite simple, effective, inexpensive, and safe strategy to improve the three-dimensionality and contour of the upper face in East Asians.

Osteoporotic fractures are the most severe complications of osteoporosis, characterized by poor bone quality, difficult realignment and fixation, slow fracture healing, and a high risk of recurrence. Clinically managing these fractures is relatively challenging, and in the context of rapid aging, they pose significant social hazards. The rapid advancement of disciplines such as biophysics and biochemistry brings new opportunities for future medical diagnosis and treatment. However, there has been limited attention to precision diagnosis and treatment strategies for osteoporotic fractures both domestically and internationally. In response to this, the Chinese Medical Association Orthopaedic Branch Youth Osteoporosis Group, Chinese Geriatrics Society Geriatric Orthopaedics Committee, Chinese Medical Doctor Association Orthopaedic Physicians Branch Youth Committee Osteoporosis Group, and Shanghai Association of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Osteoporosis Professional Committee have collaborated to develop this consensus. It aims to elucidate emerging technologies that may play a pivotal role in both diagnosis and treatment, advocating for clinicians to embrace interdisciplinary approaches and incorporate these new technologies into their practice. Ultimately, the goal is to improve the prognosis and quality of life for elderly patients with osteoporotic fractures.

Objective: To preliminarily verify the effectiveness of self-designed artificial condyle-mandibular distraction (AC-MD) complex in the treatment of Pruzansky type â ¡B and â ¢ hemifacial microsomia (HFM) through model test. Methods: Five children with Pruzansky type â ¡B and â ¢ HFM who were treated with mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) between December 2016 and December 2021 were selected as the subjects. There were 3 boys and 2 girls wih an average age of 8.4 years (range, 6-10 years). Virtual surgery and model test of AC-MD complex were performed according to preoperative skull CT of children. The model was obtained by three-dimensional (3D) printing according to the children's CT data at a ratio of 1â¶1. The occlusal guide plate was designed and 3D printed according to the children's toothpaste model. The results of the model test and the virtual surgery were matched in three dimensions to calculate the error of the residual condyle on the affected side, and the model test was matched with the actual skull CT after MDO to measure and compare the inclination rotation of the mandible, the distance between the condylar of the healthy side and the residual condyle of the affected side, and the lengthening length of the mandible. Results: The error of residual condyle was (1.07±0.78) mm. The inclination rotation of the mandible, the distance between the condylar of the healthy side and the residual condyle of the affected side, and the lengthening length of the mandible after 3D printing model test were significantly larger than those after MDO ( P<0.05). Conclusion: In the model test, the implantation of AC-MD complex can immediately rotate the mandible to the horizontal position and improve facial symmetry, and the residual condyle segment can be guided close to the articular fossa or the preset pseudoarticular position of the skull base after operation.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) commonly causes symptoms such as hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in infants and children and may lead to neurological disease and even death in severe cases. Appropriate vaccines for the prevention of HFMD are available in the clinic; however, they present different and serious adverse effects that cannot guarantee compliance and efficacy. The purpose of this study was to analyze the potential mechanism of Bryum billardieri Schwaegr. (BBS) against EV71 and analyze its potential active components. A previous in vitro antiviral assay was used to determine the best extraction method for the active site of BBS against EV71, and the results showed that the antiviral activity of BBS was more pronounced in the fraction that was extracted by aqueous extraction and alcoholic precipitation and then obtained by purification on a silica gel column (dichloromethane:methanol = 0:100). In addition, the therapeutic effects of BBS on EV71-infected mice were further investigated by in vivo pharmacological experiments. BBS reduced the lung index, viral titer, and degree of EV71-induced lung, brain, and skeletal muscle damage. The mechanism of anti-EV71 activity of BBS was also investigated by using ELISA and qRT-PCR, and it was found that BBS exerted its action mainly by regulating the expression of TLR3, TLR4, TNF-α, IL-2, and IFN-γ by modulating the activation of NF-κB and JAK2/STAT1 signaling pathways. Finally, the chemical structures of the active monomers in BBS were determined by using UPLC-MS and NMR techniques. The study revealed that one of the monomers on which BBS exerts its antiviral activity is saponarin. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that BBS is considered a natural anti-EV71 product with enormous potential, and saponarin would be its non-negligible active monomer.

Urinary tract infection has long been considered a complication rather than etiology of calcium oxalate (CaOx) nephrolithiasis. This study aimed to explore the role of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an important component of Gram-negative bacteria, on CaOx nephrolithiasis formation and antagonistic effect of melatonin. Male C57BL/6 mice were intraperitoneally injected with glyoxylate acid (80 mg/kg) daily for 7 days to construct CaOx nephrolithiasis model. A single dose of LPS (2.0 mg/kg) was given 2 h before the second glyoxylate acid treatment in the presence or absence of melatonin (25 mg/kg). Our results found that LPS promoted adhesion of CaOx crystals to renal tubular epithelial cells (RTECs) and intrarenal CaOx crystals deposition. Protein levels of cleaved Caspase-11, N-terminal of cleaved GSDMD (GSDMD-N), NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain associated protein 3 (NLRP3) and cleaved Caspase-1, several markers of non-classical inflammasome activation were upregulated in LPS-treated mouse kidneys and HK-2 cells. Moreover, the number of GSDMD pores was increased in LPS-treated HK-2 cell membrane. Melatonin inhibited Caspase-11 cleavage and antagonized the subsequent LPS-mediated upregulation of GSDMD-N, NLRP3 and cleaved Caspase-1 in kidney tissues and HK-2 cells. In addition, melatonin reduced membrane localization of GSDMD-N and the number of GSDMD pores in LPS-treated HK-2 cells. Accordingly, melatonin inhibited LPS-induced IL-1ß and IL-18 in mouse serum and HK-2 culture supernatant. Importantly, melatonin alleviated LPS-induced crystal-cell interactions and intrarenal CaOx crystals deposition. We provide experimental evidence that LPS promoted CaOx nephrolithiasis formation by inducing non-canonical inflammasome-mediated RTECs pyroptosis. Melatonin alleviated CaOx nephrolithiasis formation through inhibiting LPS-induced non-canonical inflammasome-mediated RTECs pyroptosis.

Traditional metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors have limited applications in wearable devices owing to their inflexibility and high-power consumption by substantial heat loss. To overcome these limitations, we prepared doped Si/SiO2 flexible fibers by a thermal drawing method as substrates to fabricate MOS gas sensors. A methane (CH4) gas sensor was demonstrated by subsequently in situ synthesizing Co-doped ZnO nanorods on the fiber surface. The doped Si core acted as the heating source through Joule heating, which conducted heat to the sensing material with reduced heat loss; the SiO2 cladding was an insulating substrate. The gas sensor was integrated into a miner cloth as a wearable device, and the concentration change of CH4 was monitored in real time through different colored light-emitting diodes. Our study demonstrated the feasibility of using doped Si/SiO2 fibers as the substrates to fabricate wearable MOS gas sensors, where the sensors have substantial advantages over tradition sensors in flexibility, heat utilization, etc.

A steerable parametric array loudspeaker (PAL) aims to steer a highly directional audio beam without the need to mechanically rotate the source. The Gaussian beam expansion (GBE) method is often used to model PALs because it is a computationally efficient approach, however the method relies on a paraxial approximation that can result in significant inaccuracies at large steering angles. To address this limitation, a steerable non-paraxial GBE is proposed in this article, where the mainlobe of the steered ultrasonic beam is included in the calculation by rotating the coordinate system. A non-paraxial approximation is then used to improve the accuracy of the method when integrating the virtual audio sources. The numerical results obtained using the proposed method are compared against those using the conventional GBE, as well as an exact solution. For a typical configuration, it is shown that for a conventional GBE the prediction error can be more than 30 dB at large angles, whereas the proposed method reduces this to less than 1 dB. The advantage of the proposed method is more significant at large steering angles, low audio frequencies, and those locations outside of the paraxial region. This improvement in performance is achieved with a computational cost that remains the same as the conventional GBE.

Objective: To review the research progress of digital occlusion setup in orthognathic surgery. Methods: The literature related to digital occlusion setup in orthognathic surgery in recent years was consulted, and the imaging basis, methods, clinical applications as well as existing problems were reviewed. Results: Digital occlusion setup in orthognathic surgery includes manual, semi-automatics, and fully automatic methods. The manual method mainly relies on visual cues for operation, which is difficult to ensure the best occlusion set up, though relatively flexible. The semi-automatic method utilizes the computer software for partial occlusion set up and adjustment, but the occlusion result is still largely depended by manual operation. The fully automatic method completely depends on the operation of computer software, and targeted algorithms for different occlusion reconstruction situations are needed. Conclusion: The preliminary research results have confirmed the accuracy and reliability of digital occlusion setup in orthognathic surgery, but there are still some limitations. Further research is needed in terms of postoperative outcomes, doctor and patient acceptance, planning time and cost-effectiveness.

Orbital hypertelorism correction is still a less precise procedure, with a simple preoperative design and surgical results often depending on the operator's experience. In recent years, computer-assisted technology has been fully utilized in craniofacial surgery. This article aims to explore the clinical results of computer-assisted technology in orbital hypertelorism correction and discuss its advantages and effects on treatment. Four patients with orbital hypertelorism underwent intracranial and extracranial combined box osteotomy correction. Preoperative computed tomography scans were performed, and 3-dimensional 3D digital technology was used to measure the orbital spacing, virtually design the 3D cutting scheme, and guide the intraoperative 3D cutting to improve the accuracy of periorbital osteotomy and reduce the surgical risk. Four patients underwent successful surgery, and the average distance of the medial orbital wall was decreased from 43.6 to 23.4 mm. Computer-assisted box osteotomy shortens the operative time and provides better corrective results.

BACKGROUND: Traditional middle and lower facelifts are not suitable for patients with mild skin laxity or who wish to avoid incision scars. OBJECTIVE: We present the stab access fascia suspension lift (SAFS-lift) technique, which does not require regular skin incisions, as a reliable surgical facelift strategy for the lower and middle face. METHODS: From September 2020 to September 2021, 38 patients underwent SAFS-lift. SAFS-lift involved (1) incomplete subcutaneous undermining with hydrodissection-assisted tunneling; (2) complete subcutaneous undermining with a dissecting cannula in the zygomatic buccal groove area and hollow below zygomatic arch; and (3) maximal firm superficial musculoaponeurotic system suspension with polydioxanone barbed threads in loops. All patients evaluated the outcome according to the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale. Four plastic surgeons evaluated postsurgery result with a five-point Likert scale (5 = excellent, 4 = good, 3 = fair, 2 = no change, and 1 = worse). RESULTS: Thirty-six patients were successfully enrolled. The mean follow-up period was 14.72 ± 3.89 months. No patients showed visible scarring 6 months after surgery. The minor complication rate was 19.4%. They all subsided within 1-6 weeks without treatment. No infection, hematoma, seroma, or facial nerve injury was observed. Patients' outcome ratings were 4.22 ± 0.58 (3 months), 4.69 ± 0.46 (6 months), and 4.69 ± 0.54 (1 year). Surgeons' outcome scoring was 3.98 ± 0.95. CONCLUSIONS: Stab access fascia suspension-lift is a predictable, effective, and safe facelift technique that can be performed without making noticeable incisions and resecting the skin.

This study examines the impact of the 2018 "environmental protection fee to tax" policy on the charitable giving of polluting firms between 2015 and 2019 using a differences-in-differences method. This study found that implementing the "environmental protection fee to tax" policy reduced the level of charitable giving by polluters. The decline in charitable-giving levels was more pronounced among firms classified as heavy polluters, firms from the East of China, and non-state firms. The results suggest that the "environmental protection fee to tax" policy cannot only encourage firms to become more environmentally conscious but can also be used to determine the motivations behind firm charitable donations. The policy of changing environmental protection fees to taxes needs to be effectively implemented in China and strengthen the implementation effect.This study enriches the literature on environmental policies and firm charitable giving and provides empirical evidence on the economic consequences of the "environmental protection fee to tax" policy. It can also help polluters and regulators to understand the "environmental protection fee better to tax" policy and help the government to improve the external systems that regulate and guide corporate social responsibility.

Wind noise is notorious for its detrimental impacts on audio devices. This letter evaluates the influence of wind noise on the active noise control performance of headphones in a wind tunnel, and the noise reduction is found to decrease with wind speeds. To improve the performance of noise control systems in windy environments, the filtered-x least mean squares algorithm is modified based on the total least squares technique, taking the characteristics of wind noise into account. Computer simulations with real-recorded data demonstrate that the proposed algorithm could improve the noise reduction by approximately 3 dB in windy conditions.

Osteoporotic fractures, also known as fragility fractures, are prevalent in the elderly and bring tremendous social burdens. Poor bone quality, weak repair capacity, instability, and high failure rate of internal fixation are main characteristics of osteoporotic fractures. Osteoporotic bone defects are common and need to be repaired by appropriate materials. Proximal humerus, distal radius, tibia plateau, calcaneus, and spine are common osteoporotic fractures with bone defect. Here, the consensus from the Osteoporosis Group of Chinese Orthopaedic Association concentrates on the epidemiology, characters, and management strategies of common osteoporotic fractures with bone defect to standardize clinical practice in bone repair of osteoporotic fractures.
