RESUMEN

Photonic glasses (PGs) based on the self-assembly of monosized nanoparticles can be an effective tool for realizing disordered structures capable of tailoring light diffusion due to the establishment of Mie resonances. In particular, the wavelength position of these resonances depends mainly on the morphology (dimension) and optical properties (refractive index) of the building blocks. In this study, we report the fabrication and optical characterization of photonic glasses obtained via a self-assembling technique. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that the infiltration of these systems with a green-emitting polymer enhances the properties of the polymer, resulting in a large increase in its photoluminescence quantum yield and a 3 ps growing time of the photoluminescence time decay Finally, the development of the aforementioned system can serve as a suitable low-cost platform for the realization of lasers and fluorescence-based bio-sensors.

Circulating serum miRNA are increasingly used as biomarkers and potential treatment targets in several clinical scenarios, including cardiovascular diseases. However, the current data on circulating miRNA in thoracic aorta aneurism (TAA) patients are inconclusive. The aim of the present study is to compare the levels of several circulating miRNA in patients with degenerative TAA, coronary artery disease (CAD), and controls for special profile identification. We have identified several candidates for the role of new biomarkers: miR-143-3p, miR-181-5p, miR-126-3p, miR-126-5p, miR-145-5p, miR-150-5p, and miR-195-5p. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum samples of 100 patients were analyzed, including 388 TAA patients scheduled for elective surgery, 67 patients with stable CAD and 17 controls, were used for miRNA isolation and identification. RESULTS: More specific for TAA with very high predictive ability in ROC analysis was an increase in the levels of miR-21-5p, miR-29b-5p, miR-126-5p/-3p, miR-181b-5p, and miR-92a-3p, with the latter microRNA being investigated as a novel potential marker of TAA for the first time. CONCLUSION: TAA and CAD patients demonstrated a significant increase in the levels of circulating miR-126-5p/-3p, miR-181b-5p, and miR-29b-3p. More specific for TAA with very high predictive ability in ROC analysis was an increase in the levels of miR-21-5p, -29b-5p, -126-5p/-3p, 181b-5p, and -92a-3p, with the latter microRNA being investigated as a potential marker of TAA for the first time.

Raman spectroscopy has long been suggested as a potentially fast and sensitive method to monitor phytoplankton abundance and composition in marine environments. However, the pitfalls of visible detection methods in pigment-rich biological material and the complexity of their spectra have hindered their application as reliable in situ detection methods. In this study we combine 1064 nm confocal Raman spectroscopy with multivariate statistical analysis techniques (principle component analysis and partial leas-squares discriminant analysis) to reliably measure differences in the cell viability of a diatom species (Chaetoceros muelleri) and two haptophyte species (Diacronema lutheri and Tisochrysis lutea) of phytoplankton. The low fluorescence background due to this combined approach of NIR Raman spectroscopy and multivariate data analysis allowed small changes in the overall spectral profiles to be reliably monitored, enabling the identification of the specific spectral features that could classify cells as viable or nonviable regardless of their species. The most significant differences upon cell death were shown by characteristic shifts in the carotenoid bands at 1527 and 1158 cm-1. The contributions from other biomolecules were less pronounced but revealed changes that could be identified using this combination of techniques.

In rural areas, research on the environment in native (untaught) soils is important to understand the rate of pedogenesis and to prevent the problems associated with hidden huger. In this article, original data on vegetation, chemical properties and elemental and mineralogical composition of Kastanozems (Protosalic, Siltic) and Hypersalic Solonetz (Siltic) of the small gully catchment (2 ha in total) located at the NE Ergeni Upland (Western Kalmykia, Russia) were presented. Vegetation was described and cut off (to characterize an aboveground biomass) at 13 key plots of 1 × 1 m. The list of species of the small gully catchment area amounts to 23 species (predominantly, perennial herbs) belonging to 13 families and 11 orders. The main dominants are Artemisia lerchiana, A. austriaca, Festuca valesiaca and Poa bulbosa. Soils were described and sampled in 11 cross-sections and two key plots (0 - 10 cm topsoil sampling). In soil water extracts (79 samples in total), electrical conductivity (EC) and pH were measured. In soil samples, particle size distribution, soil organic carbon and CaCO3 contents, total concentration of all the macro elements, some trace (Cl, Nb, Rb, Th, Y, Zr) and potentially toxic elements (As, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sr, V, and Zn) were described. Moreover, the concentration of three mobile fractions of elements (Li, Be, B, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Ba, Cd, Pb) measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (AES-ICP) was presented. Geochemical indexes of weathering (R - Silica/Alumina, CIW - Chemical Index of Weathering, CIA - Chemical Index of Alteration, WIP - Weathering Index of Parker, PWI -Product of Weathering Index, Vogt Ratio, PIA - Plagioclase Index of Alteration, STI - Silica-Titanium Index, B/A - Bases/Alumina, B/R - Bases/R2O3, Si/R - Silica/R2O3, Weathering indexes WI-1 and WI-2, Si/Ses - Silica/Sesquioxides, Si/Fe - Silica/Iron, a - Potassium/Sodium, ba-1 - (Potassium-Sodium)/Alumina, ba-2 - (Calcium-Magnesium)/Alumina, Ba - (Potassium-Sodium-Calcium)/Alumina) were calculated. In 12 bulk soil samples from Kastanozems and Solonetz, mineralogy (X-Ray diffractometry, the Rietveld full-pattern fitting method for quantitative analysis) was described. Data obtained can be used for more confident identification of pollution sources and pollutants' migration routes, as well as for more effective land-use management, calculating the required doses of nutrients and for adaptation of land use.

We describe an unusual in-plane type of porphyrin core distortion, tetragonal elongation (TE), observed experimentally in diboron porphyrins. The vibrational spectra of several of these complexes exhibit shifts that we have assigned to this TE distortion by comparing experimental spectra with DFT computational findings. The influence of TE in porphyrin systems was isolated using DFT analysis of the well-known model compounds Ni(II)porphine and Zn(II)porphine, with the macrocycle ring constrained to eliminate the influence of out-of-plane (OOP) distortions. A significant down-shift in frequencies was observed for porphyrin normal vibrational modes, particularly the in-plane A1g/B1g modes that are dominated by contributions from stretching and bending of Cα-Cm coordinates. In contrast, TE had little effect on the v(Pyrhalfring) and δ(Pyrdef) modes, though the lowered symmetry of the system resulted in significant splitting of the B2u and B3u modes. The impact of the TE distortion upon the diboron porphyrin vibrational spectrum was probed experimentally using Raman spectroscopy of B2O2(BCl3)2(TTP), B2OF2(TTP), and B2OPhOH2(TTP) (TTP = 5,10,15,20-(tetra- p-tolyl)porphyrin). Comparing the experimentally obtained spectral signatures to the computational findings allowed us to assign the large shifts observed for the v2 and v3 modes to the TE distortion in diboron porphyrins.

We report the first O-BODIPY-glucose conjugates, in which the sugar is directly attached to the BODIPY boron through covalent B-O-C bonds. The reaction of Cl-BODIPY with glucose in acetonitrile produced the 1 : 1 α-glucofuranose BODIPY (1), 1 : 2 α-glucofuranose BODIPY (2) and 1 : 2 α-glucoseptanose BODIPY (3) esters. Compound 3 is a rare instance of the unnatural septanose form of glucose, and the first example of a septanose borate.

Nanostructured gold substrates provide chemically stable, signal-enhancing substrates for the sensitive detection of a variety of compounds through surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Recent developments in advanced fabrication methods have enabled the manufacture of SERS substrates with repeatable surface nanostructures that provide reproducible quantitative analysis, historically a weakness of the SERS technique. Here, we describe the novel use of gold-sputtered Blu-ray disc surfaces as SERS substrates. The unique surface features and composition of the Blu-ray disc recording surface lead to the formation of gold nano-islands and nanogaps following simple gold sputtering, without any background peaks from the substrate. The SERS performance of this substrate is strong and reproducible with an enhancement factor (EF) of 10(3) for melamine. A limit of detection (LOD) for this compound of 70 ppb and average reproducibility of ±12 % were achieved. Gold-sputtered Blu-ray discs thus offer an excellent alternative to more exotic gold SERS substrates prepared by advanced, time-consuming and expensive methods. Graphical abstract AFM 3D images of 1-µm(2) sections of uncoated and gold-sputtered recordable Blu-ray disc (BD-R) surfaces and the SERS signal obtained on the gold-sputtered surface for a 1000 ppm aqueous solution of melamine.

The development of ecologically sound water allocation strategies that account for the needs of riverine ecosystems is a pressing issue, especially in semiarid river basins. In the Aral Sea Basin, a search for strategies to mitigate ecological and socioeconomic deterioration has been in process since the early 1990s. The Geographic Information System-based simulation tool TUGAI has been developed to support the policy determination process by providing a simple, problem-oriented method to assess ecological effects of alternative water management strategies for the Amudarya River. It combines a multiobjective water allocation model with simple, spatially explicit statistical and rule-based models of landscape dynamics. Changes in environmental conditions are evaluated by a fuzzy habitat suitability index for Populus euphratica, which is the dominant species of the characteristic riverine Tugai forests. Water management scenarios can be developed by altering spatiotemporal water distribution in the delta area or the amount of water inflow into the delta. Outcomes of scenario analysis are qualitative comparisons of the ecological effects of different options for a time period of up to 28 years. The given approach utilizes different types of knowledge, from quantitative hydrological data to qualitative local expert knowledge. The main purpose of the tool is to integrate the knowledge in a comprehensive way to make it available for discussions on alternative policies in moderated workshops with stakeholders. In this article, the modules of the tool, their integration, and three hypothetical scenarios are presented. Based on the experience gained when developing the TUGAI tool, we propose that the general framework can be transferred to other areas where tradeoffs in water allocation between the environment and other water users are of major concern. The potential for a simulation tool to structure and inform a complex resource management situation by involving local experts and stakeholders in the development of possible future scenarios will become increasingly valuable for transparent and participatory resource management.
