RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study aims to describe knowledge of Canada's Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act (GSDOA) and take home naloxone (THN) training and kit possession among people being released from provincial correctional facilities in British Columbia. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The authors conducted surveys with clients of the Unlocking the Gates Peer Health Mentoring program on their release. The authors compared the characteristics of people who had and had not heard of the GSDOA and who were in possession of a THN kit. FINDINGS: In this study, 71% people had heard of the GSDOA, and 55.6% were in possession of a THN kit. This study found that 99% of people who had heard of the GSDOA indicated that they would call 911 if they saw an overdose. Among people who perceived themselves to be at risk of overdose, 28.3% did not have a THN kit. Only half (52%) of participants had a mobile phone, but 100% of those with a phone said they would call 911 if they witnessed an overdose. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The authors found that people with knowledge of the GSDOA were likely to report that they would call 911 for help with an overdose. Education about the GSDOA should be a standard component of naloxone training in correctional facilities. More than one in four people at risk of overdose were released without a naloxone kit, highlighting opportunities for training and distribution. Access to a cellphone is important in enabling calls to 911 and should be included in discharge planning.

BACKGROUND: Beginning as a local epidemic, COVID-19 has since rapidly evolved into a pandemic. As countries around the world battle this outbreak, mass media has played an active role in disseminating public health information. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to get a better understanding of the role that the Canadian media played during the pandemic and to investigate the patterns of topics covered by media news reporting. METHODS: We used a data set consisting of news articles published on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) website between December 2019 and May 2020. We then used Python software to analyze the data using Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic modelling. Subsequently, we used the pyLDAvis tool to plot these topics on a 2D plane through multidimensional scaling and divided these topics into different themes. RESULTS: After removing articles that were published before the year 2019, we identified 6771 relevant news articles. According to the CV coherence value, we divided these articles into 15 topics, which were categorized into 6 themes. The three most popular themes were case reporting and testing (n=1738), Canadian response to the pandemic (n=1259), and changes to social life (n=1171), which accounted for 25.67%, 18.59%, and 17.29% of the total articles, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding the Canadian media's reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic shows that the Canadian pandemic response is a product of consistent government communication, as well as the public's understanding of and adherence to protocols.

Tie2 is an endothelial cell-specific receptor tyrosine kinase, whose activation is positively and negatively modulated by angiopoietin-1 and angiopoietin-2, respectively. Angiopoietin-mediated modulation of Tie2 activation contributes to normal vessel development and stability, however, its role in tumor angiogenesis is not well known. We investigated the role of Tie2 activation in malignant astrocytomas, a common and highly vascularized primary human brain tumor. We found that Tie2 expression and activation increases with increasing malignancy grade of astrocytomas. Inhibition of Tie2, using a kinase-deficient Tie2 construct, decreases growth of malignant human astrocytoma subcutaneous and intracranial xenografts. Tie2 inactivation disrupted the tumor vascularity, with a decrease in microvascular density, increased presence of abnormally dilated vessels, and loss of interaction between endothelial cells and surrounding smooth muscle cells, all collectively resulting in increased tumor cell apoptosis. Overall, these findings strongly suggest that Tie2 activation contributes significantly to astrocytoma tumor angiogenesis and growth. We postulate that targeting Tie2 activation, either independently or in conjunction with other anti-angiogenic therapies, such as against vascular endothelial growth factor, is of potential clinical interest.
