RESUMEN

The electrochemical synthesis of syngas (CO and H2) has garnered considerable attention in the context of Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis employing thermal catalysts. Nonetheless, the need for a novel, cost-effective technique persists. In this investigation, we introduce a direct electrochemical (dEC) approach for FT synthesis that functions under ambient conditions by utilizing a p-block element (Sn and In) overlaid Cu electrode. Surface *CO and H* species were obtained in an electrolytic medium through the CO2 + H+ + e- → HOOCad → *CO (or direct CO adsorption) and H+ + e- → H* reactions, respectively. We have observed C2-7 long-chain hydrocarbons with a CnH2n+2/CnH2n ratio of 1-3, and this observation can be explained through the process of C-C coupling chain growth of the conventional FT synthesis, based on the linearity of the Anderson-Schulz-Flory equation plots. Thick Sn and In overlayers resulted in the dominant production of formate, while CO and C2H4 production were found to be proportional and inversely correlated to H2, C2H6, and C3-7 hydrocarbon production. The EC CO2/CO reduction used in dEC FT synthesis offers valuable insights into the mechanism of C2+ production and holds promise as an eco-friendly approach to producing long-chain hydrocarbons for energy and environmental purposes.

Alpine and subalpine forests in mountains worldwide are ecologically significant because of their unique biodiversity and increased vulnerability to climate change. This study was conducted to explore the possibilities and ways to preserve the ecological diversity of alpine-subalpine forests and their function as important carbon sinks. In this study, data from 664 plots (400 m2) were collected in the alpine-subalpine zones above 1000 m elevation in South Korea, we divided 664 plots into four stand types: conifer, conifer-dominant mixed, broadleaved-dominant mixed, and broadleaved stands. Abiotic drivers and forest successional stage-related factor including topographic, climatic drivers and stand age class were used. Biotic drivers including taxonomic, phylogenetic, functional, stand structural diversity, and community-weighted mean of functional traits were used to find independent variables controlling aboveground biomass (AGB) for each stand type. We employed multi-model averaging approach as well as piecewise structural equation modeling (pSEM) for the identification of the most influential variables affecting AGB in each stand type of alpine-subalpine forests and to quantify their interrelationships and strengths. The main results showed that tree size variation (i.e., DBH STD) induced by stand age had direct effects on AGB, with varying degrees of significance (ß) ranging from 0.146 to 0.241 across all stand types in alpine-subalpine forests. Following these results, as forest succession progresses, tree species adapted to the specific environmental conditions, such as topography and climate, become dominant by creating their own niche, which increases AGB in each stand type. Additionally, climatic and topographic conditions played an important role in controlling biotic drivers depending on the stand type. In this study, we suggest that AGB should be managed and conserved depending on forest stand types according to forest succession. Furthermore, increasing size variation among tree individuals through proper forest treatments is important for increasing AGB in alpine-subalpine forests.

The Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis is recognized for its ability to produce long-chain hydrocarbons. In this study, we aimed to replicate F-T synthesis using electrochemical CO2 reduction and CO reduction reactions on a stainless steel (SS) support with a gold (Au) overlayer. Under CO2-saturated conditions, the presence of Au on the SS surface led to the formation of CH4 and a range of hydrocarbons (CnH2n and CnH2n+2, n = 2-7), while bare SS primarily produced hydrogen. The Au(10 nm)/SS exhibited the highest hydrocarbon production in CO2-saturated phosphate, indicating a synergistic effect at the Au-SS interface. In CO-saturated conditions, bare SS also produced long-chain hydrocarbons, but increasing Au thickness resulted in decreased production due to poor CO adsorption. Hydrocarbons were formed through both direct and indirect CO adsorption pathways. Anderson-Schulz-Flory analysis confirmed surface CO hydrogenation and C-C coupling polymerization following conventional F-T synthesis. The C2 hydrocarbons exhibited distinct behavior compared to C3-5 hydrocarbons, suggesting different reaction pathways. Despite low reduction product levels, our EC method successfully replicated F-T synthesis using the Au/SS electrode, providing valuable insights into C-C coupling mechanisms and electrochemical production of long-chain hydrocarbons. Depth-profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed significant changes in surface elemental compositions before and after EC reduction.

Introduction: Dysbiosis is an environmental factor that affects the induction of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) pathogenesis. In the present study, we investigated differences in the gut microbiota of patients with axSpA and revealed an association between specific gut microbiota and their metabolites, and SpA pathogenesis. Method: Using 16S rRNA sequencing data derived from feces samples of 33 axSpA patients and 20 healthy controls (HCs), we examined the compositions of their gut microbiomes. Results: As a result, axSpA patients were found to have decreased α-diversity compared to HCs, indicating that axSpA patients have less diverse microbiomes. In particular, at the species level, Bacteroides and Streptococcus were more abundant in axSpA patients than in HCs, whereas Faecalibacterium (F). prausnitzii, a butyrate-producing bacteria, was more abundant in HCs. Thus, we decided to investigate whether F. prausnitzii was associated with health conditions by inoculating F. prausnitzii (0.1, 1, and 10 µg/mL) or by administrating butyrate (0.5 mM) into CD4+ T cells derived from axSpA patients. The levels of IL-17A and IL-10 in the CD4+ T cell culture media were then measured. We also assessed osteoclast formation by administrating butyrate to the axSpA-derived peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The CD4+ IL-17A+ T cell differentiation, IL-17A levels were decreased, whereas IL-10 was increased by F. prausnitzii inoculation. Butyrate reduced CD4+ IL-17A+ T cell differentiation and osteoclastogenesis. Discussion: We found that CD4+ IL-17A+ T cell polarization was reduced, when F. prausnitzii or butyrate were introduced into curdlan-induced SpA mice or CD4+ T cells of axSpA patient. Consistently, butyrate treatment was associated with the reduction of arthritis scores and inflammation levels in SpA mice. Taken together, we concluded that the reduced abundance of butyrate-producing microbes, particularly F. prausnitzii, may be associated with axSpA pathogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to create an ideal machine learning model to predict mechanical complications in adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery based on GAPB (modified global alignment and proportion scoring with body mass index and bone mineral density) factors. METHODS: Between January 2009 and December 2018, 238 consecutive patients with ASD, who received at least 4-level fusions and were followed-up for ≥ 2 years, were included in the study. The data were stratified into training (n = 167, 70%) and test (n = 71, 30%) sets and input to machine learning algorithms, including logistic regression, random forest gradient boosting system, and deep neural network. RESULTS: Body mass index, bone mineral density, the relative pelvic version score, the relative lumbar lordosis score, and the relative sagittal alignment score of the global alignment and proportion score were significantly different in the training and test sets (p < 0.05) between the complication and no complication groups. In the training set, the area under receiver operating characteristics (AUROCs) for logistic regression, gradient boosting, random forest, and deep neural network were 0.871 (0.817-0.925), 0.942 (0.911-0.974), 1.000 (1.000-1.000), and 0.947 (0.915-0.980), respectively, and the accuracies were 0.784 (0.722-0.847), 0.868 (0.817-0.920), 1.000 (1.000-1.000), and 0.856 (0.803-0.909), respectively. In the test set, the AUROCs were 0.785 (0.678-0.893), 0.808 (0.702-0.914), 0.810 (0.710-0.910), and 0.730 (0.610-0.850), respectively, and the accuracies were 0.732 (0.629-0.835), 0.718 (0.614-0.823), 0.732 (0.629-0.835), and 0.620 (0.507-0.733), respectively. The random forest achieved the best predictive performance on the training and test dataset. CONCLUSION: This study created a comprehensive model to predict mechanical complications after ASD surgery. The best prediction accuracy was 73.2% for predicting mechanical complications after ASD surgery.

V-Zn hybrids have widely been used as catalyst materials in the environment and as energy. Herein, V-Zn hybrid electrodes were prepared by the hydrothermal and sputter-deposition methods using a Zn foil support. Their electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (EC CO2 RR) performances were tested under various applied potentials, different electrolytes, and concentrations before and after thermal treatment of the demonstrated electrode. Gas and liquid products were confirmed by gas chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, respectively. For V-Zn electrode by hydrothermal method produced mainly syngas (CO and H2) with tunable ratio by varying applied potential. Minor products include CH4, C2H4, and C2H6. A liquid product of formate showed a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 2%. EC CO2 RR efficiency for CO, CH4, and formate was best in 0.2 M KHCO3 electrolyte condition. CO and formate were further increased by photoirradiation and Nafion-treated electrode. Formate and CH4 productions were significantly increased by thermal treatment of the V-Zn electrode. CO production was diminished for the V-Zn electrode by sputter deposition but was recovered by thermal treatment. Photocatalytic CO2 RR was tested to find that RR products include CH3OH, CO, CH4, C2H4, and C2H6. Interestingly long-chain hydrocarbons (CnH2n and CnH2n+2, where n = 3-6) were first observed under mild conditions. The long-chain formation was understood by Fisher-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis. Alkenes were observed to be more produced than alkanes unlike in the conventional F-T synthesis. The present new findings provide useful clues for the development of hybrid electro-and photo-catalysts tested under various experimental conditions in energy and environment.

Background and Aims: Despite accumulating evidence on the benefits of dietary fiber in the general population, there is a lack of representative data on mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study examined the role of dietary fiber intake on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with CKD using representative Korean cohort data. Methods: The study included 3,892 participants with estimated glomerular filtration rates <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. Mortality status was followed by data linkage with national data sources. Nutritional status was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Dietary fiber was categorized into quintiles (Q). A multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Results: The average daily fiber intake of patients with CKD was 5.1 g/day. During the 10.1-year follow-up period, 602 (149 cardiovascular) deaths were documented. The HR (95% CI) for all-cause mortality in the highest quintile compared with that in the lowest quintile was 0.63 (0.46-0.87) after adjusting for age, sex, BMI, smoking, alcohol intake, exercise, total calorie intake, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia (P = 0.005). The HR (95% CI) for cardiovascular mortality in the highest quintile compared with that in the lowest quintile was 0.56 (0.29-1.08) after adjusting for same confounders (P = 0.082). Conclusion: In conclusion, we observed an inverse association between dietary fiber intake and all-cause mortality in CKD patients. Small increments in fiber intake reduced the risk of all-cause mortality by 37%. This finding highlights the need for inexpensive but important dietary modification strategies for encouraging fiber intake in the Korean CKD population.

Background and Aims: Over the past decades, the optimum protein intake for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been an important, controversial issue. Dietary protein restriction has been commonly recommended for patients with CKD for preserving kidney function. However, evidence of the associations between long-term protein intake and mortality is not consistent in patients with CKD. Therefore, we aimed to examine the associations between total protein intake and all-cause mortality in Korean adults with CKD. Methods: From three sub-cohorts of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) starting from 2001, total 3,892 participants with eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (CKD stage 3-5) were included in this study. Dietary data were collected using food-frequency questionnaires at baseline. Deaths were followed from 2001 to 2019. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to evaluate the association between protein intake and all-cause mortality. Results: During a median follow-up (min-max) of 11.1 years (0.3-15.1), 602 deaths due to all causes of mortality were documented. After adjustment for covariates, higher total protein intake was not associated with all-cause mortality [highest vs. lowest quintile of total protein intake (g/kg/day) and proportion (%) (Q5 vs. Q1), HR = 1.14 (0.75-1.72), and HR = 0.87 (0.67-1.13)] in CKD stage 3-5 patients. Conclusion: Dietary protein intake was not associated with mortality from all causes in patients with CKD. Further research is needed to establish optimal protein intake levels and examine the impact of the dietary source of protein on various health outcomes and mortality in CKD.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to promote awareness of the need for advance directives (ADs) and to provide baseline data for the development of a nurse training program about ADs. Methods: Nurses at eight long-term care hospitals in Busan and South Gyeongsang Province (N=143) were recruited using the random sampling method from December 2018 to January 2019. Data were obtained using a structured self-reported questionnaire to assess their knowledge, experience, and attitudes regarding ADs. Data were analyzed in SPSS 22.0 using descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, the Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean scores were 7.79±1.39 points for knowledge, 1.92±2.00 points for experience, and 2.80±0.24 points for attitudes regarding ADs. Knowledge and experience (r=0.32, P<0.001) had a positive correlation with knowledge and attitudes (r=0.17, P=0.39). Conclusion: According to the results, nurses generally had a high level of knowledge regarding ADs, which resulted in a positive attitude toward ADs. However, they had little experience with ADs. Therefore, nurses' must develop both direct and indirect experience with ADs using a practical training program to strengthen their clinical competency regarding ADs.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) of the gallbladder (GB) are extremely rare. We aimed to compare the clinical features, disease progression, management, and prognosis of patients with GB-NENs with those of patients with GB-adenocarcinomas (ADCs). A total of 21 patients with GB-NENs and 206 patients with GB-ADCs, treated at three tertiary medical centers between January 2010 and December 2020, were enrolled. Of the 21 patients with GB-NENs, 20 were diagnosed with poorly differentiated small-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs), and 1 patient had large-cell NEC. All patients presented with advanced stages of cancer with extensive local extension and/or distant metastasis and non-specific symptoms. Tumor-node-metastasis stage IIIB and IV (A/B) tumors were found in 6 and 15 (1/14) patients, respectively. Nine patients with GB-NEC who underwent surgical resection had a significantly better progression-free survival (PFS) than those who did not undergo surgery. After a propensity score matching with a 1:1 ratio using the American Joint Committee on Cancer stage, age, sex, and operation status, 19 pairs of patients were included. Compared with stage-matched patients with GB-ADC, patients with GB-NEC had similar overall survival and PFS. However, as GB-NEC is rarely diagnosed early, further studies investigating methods for the early diagnosis and improvement in the survival of patients with GB-NEC are needed.

BACKGROUND: One health is a flexible concept with many facets, including the environment, community, and the nosocomial super-bacteria resistance network. We investigated the molecular prevalence of extended-spectrum-ß-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-EC) in workers, livestock, and the farm environment in Korea. METHODS: ESBL-EC isolates were obtained from samples from 19 swine farms, 35 retail stores, seven slaughterhouses, and 45 related workers throughout Korea from August 2017 to July 2018, using ChromID ESBL (BioMérieux, Marcy l'Etoile, France) agar and enrichment broth. The presence of ESBL and mobilized colistin resistance (mcr) genes and antimicrobial resistance were determined. Clonality was evaluated with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). RESULTS: In total, 232 ESBL-EC isolates were obtained from 1,614 non-duplicated samples (14.4% positive rate). The ESBL-EC isolates showed regional and source-related differences. blaCTX-M-55 (N=100), blaCTX-M-14 (N=65), blaCTX-M-15 (N=33), and blaCTX-M-65 (N=23) were common ESBL types. The ESBL-EC isolates showed high resistance rates for various antimicrobial classes; however, all isolates were susceptible to carbapenem. One swine-originating colistin-resistant isolate did not carry any known mcr gene. PFGE was successful for 197 of the 232 isolates, and most PFGE types were heterogeneous, except for some dominant PFGE types (O, R, T, U, and V). MLST of 88 isolates was performed for representative PFGE types; however, no dominant sequence type was observed. CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of ESBL-EC in swine industry-related samples was significant, and the isolates harbored common clinical ESBL gene types. These molecular epidemiologic data could provide important evidence for antimicrobial-resistance control through a one health approach.

Leaf stomatal characteristics of Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila) were investigated by electron microscopy and white light scanning interferometry. On the basis of average annual precipitations, two types of tree specimens were collected from Korea, China, and Mongolia: (1) trees under normal environmental conditions and (2) trees under arid conditions. Field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed oval-shaped stomata on the lower surface, and they were ca. 20 µm in width. In-lens secondary electron imaging showed differences in electron density and stomatal pore depth between the two types. According to the line profile analysis by white light scanning interferometry, stomata under arid conditions appeared to have higher levels of the stomatal pore depth than ones under normal conditions. Focused ion beam-field emission electron microscopy supported the increased stomatal pore depth with the increasing drought stress gradient. These results suggest that complementary microscopy can be employed to unravel the adaptive phenotypic plasticity of Siberian elm in response to drought stress.

BACKGROUND: Glutamate receptors are implicated in central nervous system (CNS) pain pathways, including trigeminovascular activation, central sensitization, and cortical spreading depression. METHODS: We investigated the influence of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist memantine on pain pathways involving trigeminocervical complex (TCC) using a formalin injection model. In Sprague Dawley rats, formalin was delivered into the left periorbital area. Memantine (10 mg/kg) or vehicle was injected intraperitoneally 30 min before the formalin injection. The sensory threshold for mechanical stimulation, assessed by the von Frey monofilament threshold (VFMF), was measured 1 h and 2 h after formalin injection. Formalin-induced pain behavior was measured by monitoring the time spent rubbing the injected area during 60 min after formalin injection. The brainstem was then removed, and sections that spanned the TCC were cut, and stained with a Fos antibody. RESULTS: Pretreatment with memantine significantly attenuated formalin-induced pain behavior (p < 0.01) and the sensory threshold for VFMF (p < 0.001). In the TCC, the increase in formalin-induced Fos immunoreactivity was significantly attenuated in the memantine group (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that the NMDA receptor antagonist memantine inhibits the nociceptive process from trigemino-ophthalmic nerve endings to the TCC.

We describe new DOC (sodium deoxycholate)-heparin nanoparticles for in vivo tumor targeting and inhibition of angiogenesis based on chemical conjugation and the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. Heparin has been used as a potent anticoagulant agent for 70 years, and has recently been found to inhibit the activity of growth factors which stimulate the smooth muscle cells around tumor. From the results, DOC and heparin were conjugated by bonding carboxyl groups of heparin with amine groups of aminated sodium deoxycholate. Larger antitumor effects of the DOC-heparin VI (8.5 mol of DOC coupled with 1.0 mol heparin) were achieved in animal studies, compared to heparin alone. We confirmed that the conjugated heparin retained its ability to inhibit binding with angiogenic factor, showing a significant decrease in endothelial tubular formation. These results provide new insights into the nontoxic anticancer drug carrier as well as the design of multifunctional bioconjugates for targeted drug delivery.
