RESUMEN

Precise segregation of chromosomes during mitosis requires assembly of a bipolar mitotic spindle followed by correct attachment of microtubules to the kinetochores. This highly spatiotemporally organized process is controlled by various mitotic kinases and molecular motors. We have recently shown that Casein Kinase 1 (CK1) promotes timely progression through mitosis by phosphorylating FAM110A leading to its enrichment at spindle poles. However, the mechanism by which FAM110A exerts its function in mitosis is unknown. Using structure prediction and a set of deletion mutants, we mapped here the interaction of the N- and C-terminal domains of FAM110A with actin and tubulin, respectively. Next, we found that the FAM110A-Δ40-61 mutant deficient in actin binding failed to rescue defects in chromosomal alignment caused by depletion of endogenous FAM110A. Depletion of FAM110A impaired assembly of F-actin in the proximity of spindle poles and was rescued by expression of the wild-type FAM110A, but not the FAM110A-Δ40-61 mutant. Purified FAM110A promoted binding of F-actin to microtubules as well as bundling of actin filaments in vitro. Finally, we found that the inhibition of CK1 impaired spindle actin formation and delayed progression through mitosis. We propose that CK1 and FAM110A promote timely progression through mitosis by mediating the interaction between spindle microtubules and filamentous actin to ensure proper mitotic spindle formation.

Contemporary antifungal therapies utilized to treat filamentous fungal infections are inhibited by intrinsic and emerging drug resistance. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop novel antifungal compounds that are effective against drug-resistant filamentous fungi. Here, we utilized an Aspergillus fumigatus cell-based high-throughput screen to identify small molecules with antifungal activity that also potentiated triazole activity. The screen identified 16 hits with promising activity against A. fumigatus. A nonspirocyclic piperidine, herein named MBX-7591, exhibited synergy with triazole antifungal drugs and activity against pan-azole-resistant A. fumigatus isolates. MBX-7591 has additional potent activity against Rhizopus species and CO2-dependent activity against Cryptococcus neoformans. Chemical, genetic, and biochemical mode of action analyses revealed that MBX-7591 increases cell membrane saturation by decreasing oleic acid content. MBX-7591 has low toxicity in vivo and shows good efficacy in decreasing fungal burden in a murine model of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. Taken together, our results suggest MBX-7591 is a promising hit with a novel mode of action for further antifungal drug development to combat the rising incidence of triazole-resistant filamentous fungal infections.IMPORTANCEThe incidence of infections caused by fungi continues to increase with advances in medical therapies. Unfortunately, antifungal drug development has not kept pace with the incidence and importance of fungal infections, with only three major classes of antifungal drugs currently available for use in the clinic. Filamentous fungi, also called molds, are particularly recalcitrant to contemporary antifungal therapies. Here, a recently developed Aspergillus fumigatus cell reporter strain was utilized to conduct a high-throughput screen to identify small molecules with antifungal activity. An emphasis was placed on small molecules that potentiated the activity of contemporary triazole antifungals and led to the discovery of MBX-7591. MBX-7591 potentiates triazole activity against drug-resistant molds such as A. fumigatus and has activity against Mucorales fungi. MBX-7591's mode of action involves inhibiting the conversion of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids, thereby impacting fungal membrane integrity. MBX-7591 is a novel small molecule with antifungal activity poised for lead development.

PURPOSE: The assessment of necrotizing external otitis requires a high index of suspicion by the attending physician. The purpose of the study is to determine the accuracy of parameters available at the Emergency Department for the diagnosis of this pathology. METHODS: Retrospective diagnostic accuracy study. Patients consulting at the Emergency Department for longstanding ear swelling, severe otalgia, and failure to respond to topical treatment were included. Otoscopy, physical examination, CT appearance, and analytical results were tested for the diagnosis of necrotizing external otitis, using nuclear imaging as gold standard. Sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios and ROC curves were calculated. RESULTS: 24 patients were included; 13 cases were necrotizing external otitis, and 11 cases were other external ear pathologies. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein levels were significantly associated with necrotizing external otitis (AUC 0.92 p < 0.001, and 0.8 p < 0.001). Positive likelihood ratios were 10.15 for values of erythrocyte sedimentation rate over 26 mm/h, and 8.25 for C-reactive protein levels over 10 mg/L. Negative likelihood ratios were 0.08 and 0.28, respectively. These results were significant. The rest of clinical and radiological parameters were less accurate. CONCLUSIONS: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein are useful parameters in the evaluation of a case of longstanding otitis with clinical suspicion of necrotizing external otitis. If any of them is elevated, the probability of suffering this condition is significantly increased. If they are within normal ranges, an alternative diagnosis should be sought.

PURPOSE: This exploratory study evaluates how bilingual first graders' vocabulary use in narrative changed after a Spanish-language intervention that focuses on connection between language and literacy. METHOD: Ten Spanish-English bilingual first graders produced three English and three Spanish narratives based on the Test of Narrative Language protocol pre- and postintervention. All samples were transcribed. Based on comprehensive word inventories, all words produced by the children were identified as being core words; Tiers 1, 2, and 3 words; and/or cognates in both languages. We also coded all utterances for use of internal state terms (ISTs). We evaluated total and unique production of these kinds of words. RESULTS: Postintervention children increased their total number of cognates and ISTs across languages. They also increased the unique core words, Tier 1 words, and cognates postintervention. They also used more of each of these kinds of words in Spanish-the language of intervention-than in English. CONCLUSIONS: Children make qualitative changes to their vocabulary postintervention. There is greater change in the use of core words and Tier 1 words in Spanish. These increases in productivity and variability were indicated by the number of unique words added to the children's repertoires in ways that supported narrative production.

PURPOSE: Narratives have been a useful tool for evaluating language skills in young bilingual children. This study extends that work to bilingual adolescents by (a) describing their narrative skills and (b) evaluating the role of current language experience on measures of narrative micro- and macrostructure across Spanish and English. METHOD: Sixty-five Spanish-English bilingual adolescents, ages 10-15 years, were administered the Test of Narrative Language (TNL) in English and Spanish. Language samples were transcribed and coded for elements of narrative microstructure. Parents provided information about participants' current language experience. RESULTS: Means and standard deviations were reported for microstructure composites, TNL comprehension subtests, and TNL production subtests in Spanish and English. Findings showed differential effects of current English experience on narrative performance across Spanish and English, such that experience significantly explained 12%, 10%, and 20% of the variance in participants' microstructure scores, narrative comprehension, and narrative production in Spanish, respectively. Language experience was unrelated to performance across all English narrative measures. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that continued use of Spanish may be important for bilinguals' maintenance of the home language during adolescence, particularly on narrative tasks that require bilinguals to produce Spanish. However, experience is insufficient to explain the variability in bilinguals' narrative skills across Spanish and English.

Only three classes of contemporary antifungal drugs are routinely utilized in the clinic against filamentous fungal pathogens such as Aspergillus fumigatus. High-throughput phenotypic screens to identify small molecules with activity against filamentous fungi remain challenging due to the hyphal, biofilm-like growth morphology of these important organisms. In this chapter, we describe a protocol for utilizing a bioluminescent A. fumigatus strain for identifying small molecules that potentiate the activity of the triazole antifungal drug fluconazole. The assay holds great promise for identifying small molecules with activity against filamentous fungal pathogens.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the IgG antibody titer against SARS-CoV-2 in 196 residents of a Spanish nursing home after the second dose of the BNT162b2 vaccine and the evolution of this titer over time. The role of the third dose of the vaccine on immune-response is also analysed in 115 of participants. METHODS: Vaccine response was evaluated 1, 3 and 6 months after second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine and 30 days after booster vaccination. Total anti-RBD (receptor binding domain) IgG immunoglobulins were measured to assess response. Six month after the second dose of vaccine and previously to the booster, T-cell response was also measured in 24 resident with different antibody levels. T-spot Discovery SARS-CoV-2 kit was used to identify cellular immunogenicity. RESULTS: As high as 99% of residents demonstrated a positive serological response after second dose. Only two patients showed no serologic response, two men without records of previous SARS-CoV-2 infection. A higher immune response was associated with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection regardless of the gender or age. The anti-S IgG titers decreased significantly in almost all the participants (98.5%) after six months of vaccination whatever previous COVID-infection. The third dose of vaccine increased antibody titers in all patients, although initial vaccination values were not restored in the majority of cases. CONCLUSION: The main conclusion of the study is that vaccine resulted in good immunogenicity in this vulnerable population. Nevertheless more data are needed on the long-term maintenance of antibody response after booster vaccination.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are gaining interest with the increased number of infected patients. NTM Elite agar is designed specifically for the isolation of NTM without the decontamination step. We assessed the clinical performance of this medium combined with Vitek mass spectrometry (MS) matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) technology for the isolation and identification of NTM in a prospective multicenter study, including 15 laboratories (24 hospitals). A total of 2,567 samples from patients with suspected NTM infection were analyzed (1,782 sputa, 434 bronchial aspirates, 200 bronchoalveolar lavage samples, 34 bronchial lavage samples, and 117 other samples). A total of 220 samples (8.6%) were positive with existing laboratory methods against 330 with NTM Elite agar (12.8%). Using the combination of both methods, 437 isolates of NTM were detected in 400 positive samples (15.6% of samples). In total, 140 samples of the standard procedures (SP) and 98 of the NTM Elite agar were contaminated. NTM Elite agar showed a higher performance for rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) species than SP (7% versus 3%, P < 0.001). A trend has been noted for the Mycobacterium avium complex (4% with SP versus 3% with NTM Elite agar, P = 0.06). The time to positivity was similar (P = 0.13) between groups. However, the time to positivity was significantly shorter for the RGM in subgroup analysis (7 days with NTM and 6 days with SP, P = 0.01). NTM Elite agar has been shown to be useful for the recovery of NTM species, especially for the RGM. Using NTM Elite agar + Vitek MS system in combination with SP increases the number of NTM isolated from clinical samples.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the global distribution and environmental drivers of key microbial functional traits such as antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Soils are one of Earth's largest reservoirs of ARGs, which are integral for soil microbial competition, and have potential implications for plant and human health. Yet, their diversity and global patterns remain poorly described. Here, we analyzed 285 ARGs in soils from 1012 sites across all continents and created the first global atlas with the distributions of topsoil ARGs. RESULTS: We show that ARGs peaked in high latitude cold and boreal forests. Climatic seasonality and mobile genetic elements, associated with the transmission of antibiotic resistance, were also key drivers of their global distribution. Dominant ARGs were mainly related to multidrug resistance genes and efflux pump machineries. We further pinpointed the global hotspots of the diversity and proportions of soil ARGs. CONCLUSIONS: Together, our work provides the foundation for a better understanding of the ecology and global distribution of the environmental soil antibiotic resistome. Video Abstract.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a human fungal pathogen that is most often avirulent in immunecompetent individuals because the innate immune system is efficient at eliminating fungal conidia. However, recent clinical observations have shown that severe influenza A virus (IAV) infection can lead to secondary A. fumigatus infections with high mortality. Little is currently known about how IAV infection alters the innate antifungal immune response. Here, we established a murine model of IAV-induced A. fumigatus (IAV-Af) superinfection by inoculating mice with IAV followed 6 days later by A. fumigatus conidia challenge. We observed increased mortality in the IAV-Af-superinfected mice compared to mice challenged with either IAV or A. fumigatus alone. A. fumigatus conidia were able to germinate and establish a biofilm in the lungs of the IAV-Af superinfection group, which was not seen following fungal challenge alone. While we did not observe any differences in inflammatory cell recruitment in the IAV-Af superinfection group compared to single-infection controls, we observed defects in Aspergillus conidial uptake and killing by both neutrophils and monocytes after IAV infection. pHrodo Green zymosan bioparticle (pHrodo-zymosan) and CM-H2DCFDA [5-(and-6)-chloromethyl-2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate] staining, indicators of phagolysosome maturation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, respectively, revealed that the fungal killing defect was due in part to reduced phagolysosome maturation. Collectively, our data demonstrate that the ability of neutrophils and monocytes to kill and clear Aspergillus conidia is strongly reduced in the pulmonary environment of an IAV-infected lung, which leads to invasive pulmonary aspergillosis and increased overall mortality in our mouse model, recapitulating what is observed clinically in humans. IMPORTANCE Influenza A virus (IAV) is a common respiratory virus that causes seasonal illness in humans, but can cause pandemics and severe infection in certain patients. Since the emergence of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic strains, there has been an increase in clinical reports of IAV-infected patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) developing secondary pulmonary aspergillosis. These cases of flu-Aspergillus superinfections are associated with worse clinical outcomes than secondary bacterial infections in the setting of IAV. To date, we have a limited understanding of the cause(s) of secondary fungal infections in immunocompetent hosts. IAV-induced modulation of cytokine production and innate immune cellular function generates a unique immune environment in the lung, which could make the host vulnerable to a secondary fungal infection. Our work shows that defects in phagolysosome maturation in neutrophils and monocytes after IAV infection impair the ability of these cells to kill A. fumigatus, thus leading to increased fungal germination and growth and subsequent invasive aspergillosis. Our work lays a foundation for future mechanistic studies examining the exact immune modulatory events occurring in the respiratory tract after viral infection leading to secondary fungal infections.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: To identify the current research involving interprofessional collaboration between registered nurses (RNs) and speech language pathologists (SLPs) in healthcare and educational settings. BACKGROUND: As the complexity of healthcare increases, the need for active interprofessional collaboration between RNs and SLPs grows. A review of the literature revealed no systematic reviews currently exist about interprofessional collaborative studies between RNs and SLPs. DESIGN: Researchers conducted a scoping review using PRISMA guidelines. METHODS: Online databases were used to identify qualitative and quantitative research studies written in English and conducted between 2011 and 2020. Databases included Academic Search Ultimate, ASHA Wire, CINAHL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, ERIC, MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, and SEMANTIC SCHOLAR. The studies needed to focus on the interprofessional collaboration between RNs and SLPs or students in these professions. FINDINGS: Of the 128 sources, only six studies met scoping review criteria. The primary focus of three studies was an evaluation of interprofessional education activities between nursing, speech language pathology, and other health profession students. One study explored interprofessional education in clinical practice between RNs and SLPs. Two studies explored interprofessional collaboration in the clinical setting. CONCLUSION: More research is needed that investigates interprofessional collaboration and practice of RNs and SLPs in the healthcare setting. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This review identified the need for RNs and SLPs to work effectively as interprofessional teams are important in improving patient outcomes.

Decision-making on tick control practices is linked to the level of knowledge about livestock farming and to the social context in which individuals practice them. Tick infestation is one of the main problems in tropical livestock production. The objective of this study was to characterize tick-control related practices in two tropical livestock areas and their potential association with the level of tick infestation. A total of 139 farms were included in this survey. To determine this association, a multivariate logistic regression model was used. A stepwise model selection procedure was used and model validation was tested. Cattle husbandry as a main activity, the use of external paddocks, the use of amitraz, and the lack of mechanization on the farm were related with high tick infestation. On the other hand, owner involvement in the preparation of acaricide solution was identified as a protective factor against high tick infestation. At animal level, age (old), body condition status (thin), and lactation were also associated with high tick infestations, while Bos primigenius indicus cattle and their crosses reduced the probability of high tick infestations. The factors studied, such as herd size, education level of the owners, and veterinary guidance, varied from farm to farm. Nonetheless, these differences did not generate changes in the level of tick infestation. According to the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC), the model at farm level predicts a high level of infestation, with an accuracy of 72.00% and high sensitivity. In addition, at animal level, crossbreeding with indicus cattle and breeding selection for host resistance will be useful against high tick infestation. Likewise, the implementation of programs of capacitation and research on tick control for farmers, cowboys, and vets in these areas is necessary.

Birds are highly susceptible to aspergillosis, which can manifest as a primary infection in both domestic and wild birds. Aspergillosis in wild birds causes mortalities ranging in scale from single animals to large-scale epizootic events. However, pathogenicity factors associated with aspergillosis in wild birds have not been examined. Specifically, it is unknown whether wild bird-infecting strains are host-adapted (i.e. phylogenetically related). Similarly, it is unknown whether epizootics are driven by contact with clonal strains that possess unique pathogenic or virulence properties, or by distinct and equally pathogenic strains. Here, we use a diverse collection of Aspergillus fumigatus isolates taken from aspergillosis-associated avian carcasses, representing 24 bird species from a wide geographic range, and representing individual bird mortalities as well as epizootic events. These isolates were sequenced and analyzed along with 130 phylogenetically diverse human clinical isolates to investigate the genetic diversity and phylogenetic placement of avian-associated A. fumigatus, the geographic and host distribution of avian isolates, evidence for clonal outbreaks among wild birds, and the frequency of azole resistance in avian isolates. We found that avian isolates were phylogenetically diverse, with no clear distinction from human clinical isolates, and no sign of host or geographic specificity. Avian isolates from the same epizootic events were diverse and phylogenetically distant, suggesting that avian aspergillosis is not contagious among wild birds and that outbreaks are likely driven by environmental spore loads or host comorbidities. Finally, all avian isolates were susceptible to Voriconazole and none contained the canonical azole resistance gene variants.

Las fracturas con hundimiento de cráneo intrauterinas representan una entidad poco frecuente, generalmente secundaria a traumatismos (previos o durante el nacimiento) o de etiología desconocida. Suelen requerir evaluación y seguimiento por el servicio de Neurocirugía Pediátrica. A la fecha, es controversial la necesidad de tratamiento quirúrgico y el momento oportuno para concretarlo. Se presentan dos casos clínicos de pacientes de término, nacidas porcesárea,condiagnósticoposnatalinmediatodehundimiento de cráneo de tipo ping-pong no traumático. Ambas pacientes presentaron examen neurológico normal. Se confirmó el diagnóstico a través de radiografía y tomografía de cráneo, sin observarse lesiones asociadas. Spontaneous intrauterine depressed skull fractures are a rare entity. They can appear secondarily to head trauma (before or during birth) or due to unknown etiology. They usually require a complete evaluation from pediatric neurosurgery specialists. Their optimal management, including timely surgical treatment remains controversial. We describe two cases delivered by cesarean section, with postnatal diagnosis of spontaneous intrauterine depressed skull fracture. Both had a normal neurological exam. A skull radiography and head CT were performed, and no associated lesions were found. Both cases required surgical correction, with positive results.

Las fracturas con hundimiento de cráneo intrauterinas representan una entidad poco frecuente, generalmente secundaria a traumatismos (previos o durante el nacimiento) o de etiología desconocida. Suelen requerir evaluación y seguimiento por el servicio de Neurocirugía Pediátrica. A la fecha, es controversial la necesidad de tratamiento quirúrgico y el momento oportuno para concretarlo. Se presentan dos casos clínicos de pacientes de término, nacidas por cesárea, con diagnóstico posnatal inmediato de hundimiento de cráneo de tipo ping-pong no traumático. Ambas pacientes presentaron examen neurológico normal. Se confirmó el diagnóstico a través de radiografía y tomografía de cráneo, sin observarse lesiones asociadas. Fueron valoradas por el servicio de Neurocirugía, que indicó corrección quirúrgica de la lesión en ambos casos, con buena evolución posterior.

INTRODUCTION: Midlife physical capability (PC) is associated with developmental factors in the populations of economically developed countries. As far as we know, there is no information for rural populations of low- and middle-income countries. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of pre- and postnatal factors on midlife objective measures of PC in a 1966-67 birth cohort from a Mexican rural community. The hypothesis was that adverse developmental conditions are associated with low midlife PC. METHODS: In 1966-67, a birth cohort of all children from a poor Mexican rural community was assembled. Data on family socioeconomic status (SES), parental health and nutritional status, birth weight, postnatal growth and feeding patterns were registered. In 2018, out of the 336 cohort members, 118 were living in the community, and eighty-two of them underwent a comprehensive clinical evaluation. The evaluation included grip strength, gait velocity and chair-stand PC tests. In multivariable linear models, PC tests were the dependent variables, and prenatal, birth and postnatal factors were the independent variables. Adjustment for confounding was made with adult anthropometric, body composition, clinical and ageing status variables. RESULTS: Independent of adult health status and other ageing indicators, lower PC was associated with family organization and SES, parental nutritional status, birth weight, infant postnatal growth velocity, and weaning time. These results indicate that adverse family and environmental conditions that are prevalent in poor rural communities are associated with low midlife PC.

The main goals of this study were to identify whether key processes involved in microbial soil nitrogen transformations, such as diazotrophic activity and denitrification, the chemical properties of limiting elements in the soil, and microbial community structure, differ in the different successional stages of two long term chronosequences in maritime Antarctica. Moreover, we expect the rates of diazotrophic activity and denitrification to be stimulated by increases in air temperature and moisture. To answer these questions, we selected three stages in the succession (early, mid and late) in each of two well established chronosequences: three raised beaches in Ardley Island; and the Barton Peninsula, which includes two cosmogenically dated sites and the forefield of the Fourcade glacier. In the Ardley chronosequence, higher diazotrophic activity was found in the older successional stages, concomitant with an increase in the abundance of Cyanobacteria. In the Barton chronosequence, Cyanobacteria were only present and abundant (Microcoleus) in the early successional stage, coinciding with the highest diazotrophic activity. Denitrification in the Barton chronosequence tended to be highest at the mid successional sites, associated with the highest abundance of Rhodanobacter. In the Ardley chronosequence, the lowest abundance of Rhodanobacter was linked to lower denitrification rates in the mid successional stage. In the Ardley chronosequence, significant positive effects of passive warming and water addition on diazotrophic activity were detected in the first and the second years of the study respectively. In the Barton chronosequence on the other hand, there was no response to either passive warming or water addition, probably a manifestation of the higher nutrient limitation in this site. Denitrification showed no response to either warming or water addition. Thus, the response of microbial nitrogen transformations to global change is highly dependent on the environmental setting, such as soil origin, age and climate regime.

BACKGROUND: Patients with psychotic disorders show higher rates of the metabolic syndrome (MS) between the cluster of severe mental illnesses. Depressive symptoms can worsen outcomes of individuals with psychotic disorders. However, research on the association between MS and depression in psychotic disorders and their relevance to outcomes is lacking. METHODS: We investigated the association between depression and cardiometabolic biomarkers in psychotic disorders and the predictive value of depressive symptoms on psychopathological severity and quality of life (QoL). 406 patients with psychotic disorders were recruited as part of the Improving Physical Health and Reducing Substance Use in Severe Mental Illness randomised controlled trial. Depression, psychotic symptoms, QoL, waist circumference, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), blood pressure, and fasting glucose of patients were assessed at baseline and 12 months. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to test the effect of treatment. RESULTS: More severe baseline symptoms of depression significantly predicted worse 12-month psychotic symptoms and lower mental health related QoL at 12 months. These associations held after controlling for alcohol use, gender, ethnicity, education, and mental health related QoL Baseline. Depressive symptoms also correlated with waist circumference at both baseline and 12 months, after controlling for multiple testing. CONCLUSION: Individuals with psychotic disorders experiencing more severe depressive symptoms are more likely to have larger waist circumference contemporaneously and 12 months later, as well as more severe psychotic symptoms and worse QoL at follow-up. This highlights the need for evaluation of strategies to address depression in the management of psychotic disorders.

Sandwich composites are widely used in the manufacture of aircraft cabin interior panels for commercial aircraft, mainly due to the light weight of the composites and their high strength-to-weight ratio. Panels are used for floors, ceilings, kitchen walls, cabinets, seats, and cabin dividers. The honeycomb core of the panels is a very light structure that provides high rigidity, which is considerably increased with fiberglass face sheets. The panels are manufactured using the compression molding process, where the honeycomb core is crushed up to the desired thickness. The crushed core breaks fiberglass face sheets and causes other damage, so the panel must be reworked. Some damage is associated with excessive build-up of resin in localized areas, incomplete curing of the pre-impregnated fiberglass during the manufacturing process, and excessive temperature or residence time during the compression molding. This work evaluates the feasibility of using rigid polyurethane foams as a substitute for the honeycomb core. The thermal and viscoelastic behavior of the cured prepreg fiberglass under different manufacturing conditions is studied. The first part of this work presents the influence of the manufacturing parameters and the feasibility of using rigid foams in manufacturing flat panels oriented to non-structural applications. The conclusion of the article describes the focus of future research.

The manufacturing process of the aircraft cabin interior panels is expensive and time-consuming, and the resulting panel requires rework due to damages that occurred during their fabrication. The aircraft interior panels must meet structural requirements; hence sandwich composites of a honeycomb core covered with two layers of pre-impregnated fiberglass skin are used. Flat sandwich composites are transformed into panels with complex shapes or geometries using the compression molding process, leading to advanced manufacturing challenges. Some aircraft interior panels are required for non-structural applications; hence sandwich composites can be substituted by cheaper alternative materials and transformed using disruptive manufacturing techniques. This paper evaluates the feasibility of replacing the honeycomb and fiberglass skin layers core with rigid polyurethane foams and thermoplastic polymers. The results show that the structural composites have higher mechanical performances than the proposed sandwich composites, but they are compatible with non-structural applications. Sandwich composite fabrication using the vacuum forming process is feasible for developing non-structural panels. This manufacturing technique is fast, easy, economical, and ecological as it uses recyclable materials. The vacuum forming also covers the entire panel, thus eliminating tapestries, paints, or finishes to the aircraft interior panels. The conclusion of the article describes the focus of future research.
