RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Degenerative aortic stenosis and coronary artery disease are considered to be the most prevalent cardiovascular diseases in industrialized countries. This study aims to determine the change over time in von Willebrand factor antigen, von Willebrand factor activity, and factor VIII and where there is a correlation with total post-operative drainage. METHODS: The single-center retrospective study included 203 consecutive patients (64.5% male), undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery between March 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020 at the University Clinical Center of Serbia in the Clinic for Cardiac Surgery in Belgrade, Serbia. All patients 18 years or older who presented with isolated, hemodynamically significant aortic stenosis were included. The control group consisted of patients who presented with only coronary artery disease. RESULTS: Between patients with only coronary artery disease and patients with coronary artery diseases and aortic stenosis, there was a statistically significant difference between pre-op and 1-month post-op fibrinogen, factor VIII, von Willebrand factor antigen, and von Willebrand factor (p < 0.001), post-op drainage, with overall lower drainage in coronary artery disease patients, and consistent increase in von Willebrand factor antigen, von Willebrand factor activity, and Factor VIII post-operatively in patients with coronary artery diseases and aortic stenosis. CONCLUSION: This study has shown that there is a correlation between von Willebrand factor antigen, von Willebrand factor activity and total drainage to the level of statistical significance in aortic stenosis patients and in the overall study population.

OBJECTIVE: Transcultural adaptation and validation of FACIT-TS-PS questionnaire to Serbian language. METHODS: Standard forward and backward translation from English to Serbian language was performed. Pilot testing of FACIT-TS-PS was conducted on 12 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of malignant tumor. The study included 154 patients with malignant disease. The Questionnaire of Patient Satisfaction was used as a validated tool to evaluate concurrent validity of FACIT-TS-PS questionnaire. Reproducibility was tested on 30 subjects who answered the questionnaire for the second time two weeks later. RESULTS: Three FACIT-TS-PS subscales (Physician Communication, Treatment Staff Communication and Nurse Communication) demonstrated satisfactory construct validity using Cronbach's alpha, the remaining two subscales (Technical Competence and Confidence & Trust) showed high ceiling effect. Treatment Staff Communication subscale showed large floor effect. Concurrent validity was demonstrated by correlation with the two dimensions of the Questionnaire of Patient Satisfaction. Satisfactory reproducibility was demonstrated on 30 patients who filled the questionnaire for the second time two weeks after initial interview. CONCLUSION: The Serbian version of FACIT-TS-PS with the omission of Treatment Staff Communication subscale could be used as a valid instrument to assess patient and treatment satisfaction in chronically ill patients in the Serbian population. Omission of Treatment Staff Communication subscale is necessary because it contains questions not relevant for patients in Serbian healthcare system.

A high level of genetic purity in crop varieties must be achieved and maintained for agronomic performance, encouraging investment and innovation in plant breeding and ensuring that the improvements in productivity and quality imparted by breeders are delivered to the consumer. Since the success of hybrid seed production is dependent upon the genetic purity of the parental lines, in this study, the experimental F1exp maize hybrid and its parental inbreeds were used as a model system to examine the discriminative power of morphological, biochemical and SSR markers for seed purity assay. The highest number of off-type plants was estimated by morphological markers. According to the comparison of prolamins and albumins banding patterns of parental and derived F1exp seeds, genetic impurities could not be detected. Molecular analysis detected two types of genetic profile irregularity. Beside its use for verifying varieties of maize, report on umc1545 primer pair ability to detect non-specific bands (i.e., off-types), in both the maternal component and F1exp, which is the first report on this issue yet, strongly supports the recommendation of this SSR marker use for more accurate and time-efficient maize hybrids and parental lines genetic pyrity testing.

The concentrations of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As) were determined in 455 samples of 27 species of vegetables and 28 different processed vegetables collected during the period from January 2015 to December 2017. Vegetables (n = 387) and vegetable products (n = 68) originated from 31 countries, including Serbia. The samples were analysed by inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The concentrations of Cd, Pb, Hg and As in the vegetables and vegetable products were compared to the maximum levels set by the European Union and the Serbian legislation. The concentration of mercury was less than the limit of detection in each analysed sample. One or multiple measurable toxic metals (Cd, Pb and/or As) were found in 250 samples (54.9%; n = 455). According to the Regulations which were valid until the end of August 2021, the maximum levels of Cd, Pb and As were exceeded in 19 samples (4.2% of the samples of vegetable and vegetable products; n = 455), i.e. in 13 samples of vegetables: Cd in three, Pb in nine and As in one sample and in 6 samples of vegetables products: Cd in three, Pb in one and As in two samples. Regarding the new EU and Serbian legislation which is valid since September 2021 the maximum levels of Cd and Pb for vegetables and vegetable products were exceeded in 118 samples (25.9% of the samples of vegetable and vegetable products; n = 455), i.e. in 95 samples of vegetables: Cd in 67 and Pb in 28 samples and in 23 samples of vegetable products: Cd in 20 and Pb in 3 samples.

The European Commission has established legislation for toxic metals in certain foodstuffs in order to protect public health already in 1993. After several amendments, new maximum levels for cadmium and lead in certain foods were set as per 30 and 31 August 2021 for lead and cadmium, respectively. The new Serbian Regulation on "maximum levels of certain contaminants in food" is fully harmonised with this European legislation. The concentrations of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As) were determined in 832 samples of 39 species of fruits and processed fruits, collected during the period January 2015 to December 2017. Fruits and fruit products originated from 45 countries, including Serbia. Samples were analysed by inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Concentrations of cadmium, lead, mercury, and arsenic in fruits and fruit products were compared to these maximum levels (MLs). Overall, measurable Cd, Pb, Hg, and As were found in 377 samples (45.3%). According to the former regulations, the maximum levels of Cd and Pb for analysed fruits and fruit products were exceeded in only 10 samples (1.20%; n = 832): Cd in 6 and Pb in 4 samples, but according to the latest regulations, the maximum levels of Cd and Pb for fruits were exceeded in 196 of the samples (23.9%; n = 820): Cd in 191 and Pb in 5 samples. The increase of ML exceedances shows that attention needs to be paid for compliance of food to the recent MLs for these metals.

According to the World Health Organization, bacterium Acinetobacter baumannii is the first on the critical priority list of pathogens in urgent need for new antibiotics. The increasing resistance of A. baumannii to the last-line treatment options, including carbapenems, is a global problem. We report the molecular epidemiology of 12 carbapenem-resistant clinical isolates of A. baumannii collected from hospitalised patients in three neighbouring countries in Southeast Europe: Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, giving an insight into the molecular characterisation and evolutionary history of the acquisition of resistance genes. Besides the blaOXA-23 gene, the endemic presence of OXA-72 oxacillinase of the same origin for more than a decade as the leading mechanism of carbapenem resistance in Southeast Europe was confirmed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that investigates and analyses the phylogenetic association of the most common mechanisms of resistance to carbapenems in clinical isolates of A. baumannii originating from three neighbouring countries in Southeast Europe.

Increasingly difficult treatment of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria has become a global problem of the 21st century. Within a group of multiresistant bacteria, the Acinetobacter baumannii convincingly occupies the position at the top of the group designated as ESKAPE pathogens. In this study, 61 isolates of A. baumannii were recovered from different samples originating from various departments of the University Clinical Hospital Mostar during 2018. All of the isolates were identified using conventional phenotypic methods and the VITEK® 2 Compact System, and were confirmed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined by the microbroth dilution method using MICRONAUT-S MDR MRGN-Screening and VITEK 2 Compact System. All strains were resistant to carbapenems and classified in eight different resistotypes according to their antibiotic resistance and macrorestriction pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles, with all belonging to IC II. One isolate displayed resistance to colistin (MIC ≥16 mg/L). The presence of blaOXA genes encoding OXA-type carbapenemases was investigated by multiplex PCR and the Eazyplex® SuperBugAcineto system and showed 100% compatibility with the detection of acquired oxacillinases. Molecular characterization of the isolates tested in this study revealed the OXA-23- and OXA-40-like groups of acquired oxacillinases. Sequencing of two PCR products of the OXA-40-like group confirmed the presence of OXA-72. Survival assays with two selected isolates of A. baumannii encoding different mechanisms of carbapenem resistance revealed that one isolate was able to survive on a fragment of white laboratory coat during 90 days of monitoring. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first article to present the results of a comprehensive phenotypic, genotypic, and molecular analysis of A. baumannii isolates from the leading clinical hospital center in the southwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, including data for the survival of this pathogen on the white laboratory coats used as compulsory medical clothing.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this research project were isolation, identification, and evaluation of the safety aspect and probiotics properties of 21 Enterococcus faecium strains isolated from sausages originated from southeastern Serbia. RESULTS: Analyzed E. faecium isolates showed tolerance to simulated gastrointestinal conditions. All the examined isolates grew well on media with 0.1% and 0.2% of phenol. None of the tested isolates were histamine-producers, while the synthesis of tyramine was observed for E. faecium sk8-1 and sk8-17. Full resistance to antibiotics was not observed for any examined isolate of E. faecium (penicillin, amoxicillin, and ofloxacin showed the effect on all tested isolates). An inhibition zone against examined pathogens was exhibited by all strains, with the largest inhibition zone against Pseudomonas spp., Proteus spp. and E. coli (12-30 mm/MIC values ranged from 0.5 to 12 mg mL-1). CONCLUSION: The results indicated that E. faecium isolates from spontaneously fermented sausage showed a potential for further investigation and possible application as probiotics.

Due to its divergent chemical composition and good nutritional properties, pollen is not only important as a potential food supplement but also as a good substrate for the development of different microorganisms. Among such microorganisms, toxigenic fungi are extremely dangerous as they can synthesize mycotoxins as a part of their metabolic pathways. Furthermore, favorable conditions that enable the synthesis of mycotoxins (adequate temperature, relative humidity, pH, and aw values) are found frequently during pollen collection and/or production process. Internationally, several different mycotoxins have been identified in pollen samples, with a noted predominance of aflatoxins, ochratoxins, fumonisins, zearalenone, deoxynivalenol, and T-2 toxin. Mycotoxins are, generally speaking, extremely harmful for humans and other mammals. Current EU legislation contains guidelines on the permissible content of this group of compounds, but without information pertaining to the content of mycotoxins in pollen. Currently only aflatoxins have been researched and discussed in the literature in regard to proposed limits. Therefore, the aim of this review is to give information about the presence of different mycotoxins in pollen samples collected all around the world, to propose possible aflatoxin contamination pathways, and to emphasize the importance of a regular mycotoxicological analysis of pollen. Furthermore, a suggestion is made regarding the legal regulation of pollen as a food supplement and the proposed tolerable limits for other mycotoxins.

Fusarium graminearum as the main causal agent of Fusarium head blight (FHB) and its ability to produce trichothecenes was investigated by molecular techniques. A total of 37 strains isolated from the wheat, harvested in Serbia in 2005, 2008 and 2015, and previously designated by morphological observation as F. graminearum, were used for trichothecene genotypes characterization. The strains were identified using the species-specific primer set FG16R/FG16F while genotypic characterization was done using specific TRI13 and TRI3 sequences of the trichothecene gene clusters. The PCR assays identified all strains as species of F. graminearum sensu stricto with the DON/15-ADON genotype. The quantification of the mycotoxin (DON) was performed using the biochemical assay. The high levels of DON (>20,000 µg kg-1) were recorded in all of the strains from 2005, four strains from 2008 and two strains from 2015. Weather data of the investigated seasons, showed that the optimal temperature, frequent rains and high relative humidity (RH) was very favourable for the development of F. graminearum, affecting the DON biosynthesis.

The aim of this work was to determine elements composition and bioaccumulation process in ripe tomato fruits influenced by zinc feeding of plants which was applied in three different doses. Macro- and microelement content in growing soil, seeds, and fruits was determined by ICP-OES method. Health risk assessment was calculated according to the presence of some toxic elements. It was found that predominant macroelements were phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium followed by other ten determined elements. The presence of five potentially toxic elements (cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, and strontium) in seed and fruits was detected. Bioaccumulation differences (especially in case of potassium) for some elements in seed and fruit were established. In both cases, calcium and lead were the only elements with antagonistic effect towards zinc feeding process. Health risk assessment has shown that acute risk is low for all toxic elements (according to acute hazard quotient (HQ) calculation) except for cadmium in fruit seed, where it can be characterized as moderate. Long-term hazard quotient calculation showed moderate risk in the case of lead (fruit skin and seed) and low values for other toxic elements. Since the most part of toxic elements was accumulated in tomato fruit skin and seed, peeling of fruits can significantly reduce health risk. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Plants modify growth in response to the proximity of neighbors. Among these growth adjustments are shade avoidance responses, such as enhanced elongation of stems and petioles, that help plants to reach the light and outgrow their competitors. Neighbor detection occurs through photoreceptor-mediated detection of light spectral changes (i.e. reduced red:far-red ratio [R:FR] and reduced blue light intensity). We recently showed that physiological regulation of these responses occurs through light-mediated degradation of nuclear, growth-inhibiting DELLA proteins, but this appeared to be only part of the full mechanism. Here, we present how two hormones, auxin and ethylene, coregulate DELLAs but regulate shade avoidance responses through DELLA-independent mechanisms in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Auxin appears to be required for both seedling and mature plant shoot elongation responses to low blue light and low R:FR, respectively. Auxin action is increased upon exposure to low R:FR and low blue light, and auxin inhibition abolishes the elongation responses to these light cues. Ethylene action is increased during the mature plant response to low R:FR, and this growth response is abolished by ethylene insensitivity. However, ethylene is also a direct volatile neighbor detection signal that induces strong elongation in seedlings, possibly in an auxin-dependent manner. We propose that this novel ethylene and auxin control of shade avoidance interacts with DELLA abundance but also controls independent targets to regulate adaptive growth responses to surrounding vegetation.

Plants can sense neighbour competitors through light-quality signals and respond with shade-avoidance responses. These include increased shoot elongation, which enhances light capture and thus competitive power. Such plant-plant interactions therefore profoundly affect plant development in crowded populations. Shade-avoidance responses are tightly coordinated by interactions between light signals and hormones, with essential roles for the phytochrome B photoreceptor [sensing the red:far red (R:FR) ratio] and the hormone gibberellin (GA). The family of growth-suppressing DELLA proteins are targets for GA signalling and are proposed to integrate signals from other hormones. However, the importance of these regulators has not been studied in the ecologically relevant, complex realm of plant canopies. Here we show that DELLA abundance is regulated during growth responses to neighbours in dense Arabidopsis stands. This occurs in a R:FR-dependent manner in petioles, depends on GA, and matches the induction kinetics of petiole elongation. Similar interactions were observed in the growth response of seedling hypocotyls and are general for a second canopy signal, reduced blue light. Enhanced DELLA stability in the gai mutant inhibits shade-avoidance responses, indicating that DELLA proteins constrain shade-avoidance. However, using multiple DELLA knockout mutants, we show that the observed DELLA breakdown is not sufficient to induce shade-avoidance in petioles, but plays a more central role in hypocotyls. These data provide novel information on the regulation of shade-avoidance under ecologically important conditions, defining the importance of DELLA proteins and GA and unravelling the existence of GA- and DELLA-independent mechanisms.

We recently described how DELLA proteins are involved in plant growth responses to neighbors in dense stands. These responses that are called shade avoidance include enhanced stem and petiole elongation and are a classic example of adaptive phenotypic plasticity. Although much is known about neighbor detection, much less is known about the signal transduction network downstream of these signals. We will discuss here how a group of growth-supressors, called DELLA proteins, are functionally regulated upon the detection of neighbors. DELLA proteins are degraded upon binding of gibberellin (GA) to its receptor, thus releasing the restraint of GA responses. We discuss here that GA positively regulates shade avoidance by reducing DELLA protein levels. Furthermore, we will show that this is an essential step in shade avoidance, but also that reduced DELLA abundance alone is not sufficient to induce these growth responses. It is concluded that GA-dependent DELLA degradation is one essential step in the signal transduction network from light-mediated neighbor detection towards adaptive shoot elongation responses.

Twenty-seven Lactobacillus plantarum ssp. plantarum, 11 Lactobacillus paraplantarum and five Lactobacillus casei-related strains, isolated from various autochthonous Serbian and Montenegro-fermented foods, were identified using phenotypical characterization and current PCR methods based on PCR of the recA gene or the 23S-5S rRNA gene intragenic spacer (IS) region. The strains were genotypically characterized by a new method based on the insertion sequence element ISLpl11 that grouped these lactobacilli into 10 IS-fingerprinting groups. Between six and 23 copies of the ISLpl1 were found in each strain and the ISLpl1-fingerprint groups correlated well with the origin of the strains. The method proved suitable for strain typing of lactic acid bacteria at the infraspecies level.
