RESUMEN

Glycerol, the main residue of biodiesel production, can be used to produce organic acids and energy through anaerobic digestion. This study aimed to assess microbial structure, diversity, productivity, and stability and the influence of these parameters on the performance of an anaerobic reactor. The experimental setup consisted of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor fed residual glycerol and nutrients. The organic loading rate (OLR) was gradually increased through five stages, and sludge samples were collected at each, followed by DNA extraction and PCR denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE). The resulting bands were excised, amplified, and purified. The results showed increased bacterial diversity and richness from the inoculum (Rr 38.72 and H 2.32) and along stages I and II, reaching the highest populational parameters (Rr 194.06 and H 3.32). The following stages promote decreases in richness and diversity, achieving the lowest populational parameters on this study (Rr 11.53 and H 2.04). Biogas production increased along with functional organization due to the specialization of the bacterial community and a decrease in the methanogenic population, both promoted by the increase in OLR.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical potential of the Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) in the detection of the early alterations in respiratory mechanics of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients. A total of 36 individuals were analyzed, 18 healthy and 18 with RA. The clinical usefulness of the parameters was evaluated investigating sensibility (Se), specificity (Sp) and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). In the RA group, all the 3 studied parameters obtained high accuracy for clinical use (AUC>0.9), while in spirometric parameters, no parameter obtained appropriate accuracy for clinical use (AUC < 0.7). In conclusion, the parameters obtained by FOT presented adequate Se and Sp, indicating that this technique can be helpful in the evaluation of the early respiratory mechanical alterations in patients with RA.

RESUMEN

To compare the efficacy of the combination therapy Methotrexate (MTX) and Chloroquine (CHLO) with MTX and Placebo (PLA) in the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis. A total of 82 patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), diagnosed according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria, received orally either MTX 7.5 mg/week and CHLO 250 mg/day or MTX 7.5 mg/week and PLA 1 tablet/day. Adverse effects (AE) were monitored monthly and disease activity was assessed at 0, 2, 4 and 6 months. Sixty-eight patients completed the study. All outcome measures improved significantly in both treatment groups. Patients receiving MTX/CHLO ended the study with a significantly lower joint count, greater grip strength and better functional ability the patients in the MTX/PLA group, respectively; 4.5 vs 7.5 (P < 0.05), 113.3 vs 89.1 (P < 0.05) and 0.636 vs 0.811 (P < 0.05). Mild AE were more frequently observed in the MTX/CHLO, 17 events in 15 patients, compared to 9 events in 8 patients in the MTX/PLA group (NS). These data indicate that MTX/CHLO is slightly more efficacious and toxic than is MTX/PLA in the treatment of RA.

RESUMEN

An open, multicentre trial was carried out in 140 patients with coxarthroxis and/or gonarthrosis to assess the effectiveness of treatment with diftalone. The trial lasted 4 weeks with a drug dosage decreasing from 1000 mg (Week 1) to 750 mg (Week 2), and to 500 mg (Weeks 3 and 4). In almost all of the objective and subjective assessments used for the measurement of effectiveness there was a statistically significant improvement with treatment, which was dose related, the greatest improvement being seen during the first week. Tolerance of treatment was assessed as good in the majority of patients and again, side-effects appeared to be dose related.
