RESUMEN

We experimentally demonstrate a Purcell effect-based design technique for improved impedance matching, and thus enhanced the reflection coefficient from a small microwave emitter. Using an iterative process centred on comparing the phase of the radiated field of the emitter in air with that of the emitter in a dielectric environment, we optimise the structure of a dielectric hemisphere above a ground plane surrounding a small monopolar microwave emitter in order to maximise its radiation efficiency. The optimised system shows very strong coupling between the emitter and two omnidirectional radiation modes at 1.99 GHz and 2.84 GHz, yielding Purcell enhancement factors of 1762 and 411 times increase respectively, and near perfect radiation efficiency.

RESUMEN

Over the past 2 decades, fundamentals of exercise medicine, including clinical exercise testing, assessment and promotion of physical activity, exercise prescription, and supervised exercise training/rehabilitation programming have demonstrated considerable clinical value in the management of children and adolescents with congenital and acquired heart disease. Although the principles of exercise medicine have become an integral component in pediatric cardiology, there are no standardized training recommendations for exercise physiology during pediatric cardiology fellowship at this time. Thus, the Pediatric Cardiology Exercise Medicine Curriculum Committee (PCEMCC) was formed to establish core and advanced exercise physiology training recommendations for pediatric cardiology trainees. The PCEMCC includes a diverse group of pediatric cardiologists, exercise physiologists, and fellowship program directors. The expert consensus training recommendations are by no means a mandate and are summarized herein, including suggestions for achieving the minimum knowledge and training needed for general pediatric cardiology practice.

RESUMEN

Congestive heart failure and subclinical left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) affect long-term survivors of hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). Echocardiographic measurements of global longitudinal and circumferential strain have shown promise in identifying subclinical LVSD in cancer survivors. We analyzed echocardiograms in 95 children and young adults with malignancies or bone marrow failure syndromes performed before HSCT and 1-6 years after HSCT. We additionally measured the biomarkers soluble suppression of tumorigenicity-2 (sST-2) and cardiac troponin-I (cTn-I) in the same children through 49 days post HSCT. Ejection fraction (EF) after HSCT was unchanged from baseline (baseline: z-score -0.73 vs long-term follow up: -0.44, P=0.11). Global longitudinal strain was unchanged from baseline (-20.66 vs -20.74%, P=0.90) as was global circumferential strain (-24.3 vs -23.5%, P=0.32). Levels of sST-2 were elevated at all time points compared with baseline samples and cTn-I was elevated at days 14 and 28. Cardiac biomarkers at any time point did not correlate with long-term follow-up EF. In children and young adult survivors of HSCT, EF was unchanged in the first years after HSCT. Elevation in cardiac biomarkers occurring after HSCT suggest subclinical cardiac injury occurs in many patients and long-term monitoring for LVSD should continue.

RESUMEN

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit strong optical transitions with significant potential for optoelectronic devices. In particular they are suited for cavity quantum electrodynamics in which strong coupling leads to polariton formation as a root to realisation of inversionless lasing, polariton condensation and superfluidity. Demonstrations of such strongly correlated phenomena to date have often relied on cryogenic temperatures, high excitation densities and were frequently impaired by strong material disorder. At room-temperature, experiments approaching the strong coupling regime with transition metal dichalcogenides have been reported, but well resolved exciton-polaritons have yet to be achieved. Here we report a study of monolayer WS2 coupled to an open Fabry-Perot cavity at room-temperature, in which polariton eigenstates are unambiguously displayed. In-situ tunability of the cavity length results in a maximal Rabi splitting of hΩRabi = 70 meV, exceeding the exciton linewidth. Our data are well described by a transfer matrix model appropriate for the large linewidth regime. This work provides a platform towards observing strongly correlated polariton phenomena in compact photonic devices for ambient temperature applications.
