RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease is a preventable problem and regular secondary prophylaxis and proper awareness about this disease among common people may reduce the burden of this disease in any region. OBJECTIVES: To find out compliance to the secondary prophylaxis of Rheumatic heart disease and awareness about this disease among common people of Bihar. METHODOLOGY: This was a questionnaire based cross sectional study to find out compliance to the secondary prophylaxis and awareness of Rheumatic heart disease, conducted at two tertiary care referral hospitals of Bihar. RESULT: 19/41 (46%) study participants were non-compliant to regular secondary prophylaxis. Most of the participants (34/42,81%) had poor knowledge of Rheumatic heart disease. Low socioeconomic condition was not a statistically significant risk factor for poor adherence to the secondary prophylaxis (odds ratio-5.29,95% CI- 0.55-50.08, P-0.11). Low level of education was not a statistically significant risk factor for poor awareness as compared to the participants with education of 10th standard or above (odds ratio 4.0, 95% CI- 0.65-24.24, P- 0.15). CONCLUSION: Approximately half of the participants of this study were non-compliant to the regular secondary prophylaxis of rheumatic heart disease and most of them had poor awareness of this disease. Ensuring regular secondary prophylaxis and improving awareness to Rheumatic heart disease among common people may reduce its prevalence in regions with significant burden of Rheumatic heart disease.

RESUMEN

Pseudoaneurysm of hepatic artery with upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a rare but life-threatening complication of blunt trauma to the abdomen. An 8-year-old child with this condition was treated successfully with percutaneous coil embolization of the pseudoanysm.

INTRODUCTION: infantile hemangioma is the most common benign tumor in infancy. Currently, oral propranolol is the treatment of choice for infantile hemangioma, but there is no consensus when it comes to its recommended dosage for this condition. Hence this study was conducted to find out the appropriate dosage of oral propranolol for treatment of infantile hemangioma. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted on 25 patients with infantile hemangioma, who were treated with gradually increasing dose of propranolol starting from a lower dose of 1mg/kg/day. RESULTS: 17/22(76%) patients showed regression of the tumor at the dose of 1- 1.5 mg/kg/d. 5/22(24%) patients were unresponsive to the treatment with the lower dose and they did not respond even with the gradually escalated dose of 3-4 mg/kg/day. CONCLUSION: Propranolol in a lower dose of 1-1.5 mg/kg/day is safe and efficacious in the treatment of infantile hemangioma and the lesions which do not show initial response to the lower dose are unlikely to respond to the higher dose of 3-4 mg/kg/day.

RESUMEN

An enormous amount of information on a genomics scale is available for zebrafish (Danio rerio), which is a well-studied model organism for human diseases. However, a majority of this annotation is scattered in obscure data sources. There have been limited efforts to present it on a unified and integrated platform, which would help to understand the biological processes in this organism better. FishMap is a unified and centralized resource for storage, retrieval, and display of genomic information of zebrafish. The datasets have been methodically collected from various resources and supplementary information of publications and mapped to the zebrafish genome. The data are organized into nine major sections, which include comparative genomics, mapping and sequencing, gene and gene predictions, expression and regulation, and variation and repeats. A number of unique sections have been incorporated, which include tracks on noncoding gene annotation, location of retrovirus/transposon integrations in the genome, and their flanking genomic sequences and novel transcripts. The datasets are linked to related data sources. FishMap is built on the Gbrowse, which is a part of the Generic Model Organism Database Consortium Project. The resource also features a Web-based BLAST server for sequence homology search and a gene ID converter that would enable users to sift through different interchangeable gene annotation identifier systems. The database is amenable to programmatic access through the Distributed Annotation System as well as BioMoby protocols, thus making it a central community resource that can be integrated with existing data mining and analysis workflows. We hope that FishMap would be an integral resource for community participation in zebrafish genomics.
