RESUMEN
Certain cases of apparently isolated conductive deafness, the etiology of which remains uncertain after clinical examination and impedance measurement, can be found in younger patients and adults. Surgical exploration is necessary: this involves, first of all, an inspection of the anatomy of the ossicles and then precise study of their mobility at the level of the tympanic cavity and attic. Various forms of malleus ankylosis, due to blockage or malformation, are presented. Ossiculoplasty gives good auditory results.

Access to the pterygomaxillary fossa is obtained with difficulty, classical approaches to this lateral craniofacial cross-roads being either narrow or mutilating. In some affections it is justifiable to use a scalp approach with temporary displacement of the zygomaticomalar block, this providing an excellent view of the region.

The authors report on their treatment of 39 patients with bilateral laryngeal abductor paralysis, observed over a 10-year period. Medical treatment was given in 5 cases, and tracheotomy was performed in 5. Ten patients underwent endoscopic surgery with very good results in 7. Arytenoidopexy was carried out by the extra-laryngeal route in 19 cases with 16 excellent results.

The inducibility of pulmonary microsomal enzymes and the biological effects of chronic induction by 5-6 benzoflavone and methylcholanthrene were compared in normal and precancerous rats. Two important points were shown out: a dose of 6000 WLM resulted in a permanent modification of the pulmonary microsomal enzymatic pool and 5-6 benzoflavon was a strong co-factor of radiation induced carcinogenesis. This synergistic action was demonstrated by a much shorter latency, moreover neo-formed tissue and epidermoid cancers with a particular morphology were observed. In all the cases cancers appeared within 100 days following the beginning of the chemical treatment.

PIP: This cis and trans isomers of Broparestrol (1-bromo-2(4-ethylphenyl)-1,2-diphenyl ethylene) and of its 1-bromo-1(4-ethylphenyl)-2,2-diphenylethylene isomer, and of the analogous 1-nitro compounds were prepared and tested for estrogenicity by the Allen-Doisy vaginal smear test in rats and for antifertility in rats. With hexanestrol-3 (dihydrodiethylstilbestrol) as a reference in the Allen-Doisy test, bromo-1-(p-ethylphenyl)-1-diphenyl-2,2-ethylene was typical estrogen, but cis (or Z) broparestrol and trans (or E) broparestrol were incomplete estrogens, producing both keratinized and nucleated cells in rat vaginal smears. Bromo-1-(p-ethylphenyl)-1-diphen yl-2,2-ethylene was 2 times more estrogenic in this test than hexanestrol, but the broparestrol isomers were over 100 times less active. For the rat antifertility test, the test compounds were administered for 5 days before and for 1 month while females were caged with males, then continued for 7 months. Nitro-1-(p-ethylphenyl)-2-diph enyl-1,2-ethylene was interesting because it inhibited fertility at 1 mg/day, a dose that was not estrogenic. Bromo-1(p-ethylphenyl)-1-diphen yl-2,2-ehtylene had antifertility activity at 10 mcg and nitro-1-(p-ethylphenyl)-1-diphenyl-2,2-ethylene at 100 mcg.^ieng
