RESUMEN

The term "Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS)" is being used much more often than "Glossodynia", complicating diagnostic and treatment tactic choice. The aim of the study was to determine the difference between "Glossodynia" and "BMS" considering absence or presence of intraoral metal prosthetic devices and burning sensation in the mouth. To establish the frequency of glossodynia and BMS 2355 patient records were analyzed admitting consultation for oral diseases for the last 10 years. Clinically we examined 408 patients aged 40 to 70. The research results showed that 17% of patients complained of "burning mouth": 10.2% of them had these symptoms due to oral mucosa diseases; 58.0% had glossodynia, 27.4% had discomfort because of intolerance to metal prosthodontic materials and 4.4% had combined pathology. Glossodynia and intolerance to metal prosthodontic materials had much in common in terms of clinical features, but the last one may be specified by changes in saliva composition. BMS thus proved to be the common definition corresponding to various diseases of oral mucosa and intolerance to intraoral metal appliances, while glossoldynia is a distinct neurogenic disease which is difficult to treat and requires comprehensive approach involving neurologist and physician.

RESUMEN

Eighty-seven teeth with 100 periapical destruction foci have been treated in 78 patients from 19 to 60 years of age. In 28 patients calcium-containing preparation was administrated orally for 1 to 3 months. The dynamics of destruction foci changes was similar in all patients though among patients with satisfactory X-ray findings 64% took calcium-containing preparation. No considerable difference in the regeneration dynamics was revealed in patients with somatic diseases and healthy individuals. The residual destruction size 12 months later correlated positively with the initial size of destruction area.

RESUMEN

The purpose of our research was to learn the efficacy of the Dirol chewing gum upon the condition of the oral cavity and the stomach acidity in patients with hyperchlorhydratic type of secretion. It has been estimated that correct usage of chewing gum by patients with hyperacidity of the stomach in a month after its administration decreases the level of gastric acidity to a normal one. Thus, it has been proved that the Dirol chewing gum favorably changes the condition of oral cavity both from hygienic point of view, acido-alkaline balance and saliva condition.

RESUMEN

The electrokinetic activity of buccal epithelial cells drops in patients with lichen planus. The most pronounced changes develop in patients with severe forms of the disease (exudative hyperemic and erosive ulcerative). The functional activity of the epithelium does not depend on sex or presence of metal dentures; the effect of the disease duration is negligible, while the underlying somatic disease is significant. The electrokinetic activity of epithelial cells is sharply reduced in cardiovascular patients with lichen planus of the buccal mucosa. Increase of electrokinetic activity of epitheliocytes after local drug therapy for lichen planus clinically manifests by epithelialization of erosions, which recommends this test for predicting the course and outcome of lichen planus.

RESUMEN

Eighty patients with periodontal inflammations and 15 subjects matched for age and sex without periodontal inflammations were examined. Periodontal status was evaluated using clinical and paraclinical methods of examination. Blood content and oxygen saturation of periodontal tissues were evaluated with an Escort II MDE saturator (USA). The results indicate that interval normobaric hypoxic stimulation promoted a decrease of bacterial contamination of periodontal pouches and notably improved blood content and oxygen saturation of periodontal tissues.

RESUMEN

A total of 102 patients with diabetes mellitus (types 1 and 2) were examined. Local immunity of the oral cavity and infection of the buccal mucosa with Candida fungi was evaluated. The incidence of true candidiasis of the buccal mucosa in diabetics was 35.3% and of latent candidiasis 43.1%. The adsorption activity of epithelial cells of the buccal mucosa was decreased in diabetics. Treatment was prescribed for all patients with both true and latent infection. Basic therapy did not essentially modify the course of candidal infection of the buccal mucosa, while therapy with Varzi-Yatchi mineral water 4.5 times decreased the contamination of the buccal mucosa and increased the adsorption activity of epithelial cells of the buccal mucosa.

RESUMEN

Clinical and experimental studies on 64 children aged 3-4 years and 80 non-inbred rats showed that the degree of dental enamel mineralization depends on the level of consumption of easily available carbohydrates during the antenatal period and the intensity of dental caries involvement on the degree of teeth mineralization.

RESUMEN

Effects of metal splints on the hygienic status of the oral cavity and status of dental hard tissues and the periodontium were studied in 30 patients with fractures of the jaws during the first days after treatment with splints and in the postimmobilization period. Sixty-seventy days after the splints were removed, the hygienic status of the oral cavity was worse than in normal subjects; moreover, the intensity of caries increased and the periodontal status deteriorated.

RESUMEN

The questionnaire survey covered 18 families (53 subjects). After dental examination special calculations were made which demonstrate that caries intensity is directly related to daily sugar intake. The intake included also sugar provided with other foodstuffs. The least caries intensity proved in subjects whose dietary sugar intake does not exceed 30 g a day. This quantity is believed critical for caries onset.

RESUMEN

Examinations of 176 children administered caries-preventing drugs for 2 years have shown that oral irrigation with 0.2% sodium fluoride solution, oral intake of fluorine in a dose of 1 mg, or of potassium orotate, or of calcium glucerophosphate improved the oral fluid resistance to carbohydrate action. Glycolytic enzyme activity of the oral fluid in these children was not augmenting during carbohydrate load, whereas in children not administered such preventive courses oral intake of 10% glucose solution resulted in essential elevation of salivary aldolase and lactate dehydrogenase activities, i.e. intensification of glycolytic processes, this leading to the development of acid potential in the oral cavity and, consequently, to a higher risk of caries development.

RESUMEN

Examinations of 711 subjects of various age, sex, and social status, rural and urban residents, have shown that about 95% of the population are aware of the hazardous effects of sweets on the teeth. However more than a half of the examinees abuse sweets, this resulting in a higher incidence of caries. The most frequent sweet-eaters are children, women, urban workers, and rural employees.
