RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Music Therapy (MT) is a non-pharmacological, art-based intervention that employs music experiences within a therapeutic alliance to attend to clients' physical, emotional, cognitive, and social requirements. This is the first study aiming at investigating the impact of MT on the psychological facets of children suffering from cancer. METHODS: The study, combining the AQR and m-YPAS assessment tools, evaluated behavioral, sound-musical, and interactive parameters in pediatric oncology patients undergoing MT sessions during hospitalization. Fifty patients admitted to the Paediatric Oncology and Haematology Unit at Policlinico S. Orsola Hospital in Bologna, Italy, were enrolled, irrespective of their treatment regimen. Data collection occurred on the first day of the MT session between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., with observations conducted by independent observers. In addition to traditional statistical analysis, network analysis was used to explore the combined interactions of all parameters, effectively discerning the distinctive roles played by each one during therapy sessions and their influence on all others. RESULTS: Network analysis highlighted distinct patterns of interactions among parameters during the various sessions, emphasizing the role of positive emotions and a calm setting, the child's ability to take the initiative in sessions, their sense of agency, and the parent's role in guiding them. Significant differences were recorded at each time point between all variables considered. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this innovative study may pave the way for future multicenter studies aimed at further exploring the role of MT in children undergoing both curative and palliative treatments for cancer.

RESUMEN

The main aims of this study were to provide an initial sociodemographic and clinical characterization of university students' academic and psychological functioning and to investigate and compare the feasibility and clinical utility of psychotherapies (cognitive behavior vs. psychodynamic) delivered at a large University in Northern Italy for improving university students' mental health, using self and observer-report measures. One hundred forty-9 students (102 women; MAge = 24.55, SD = 3.35) were consecutively interviewed and extensively assessed by independent clinicians of the Service before and after the intervention, using the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation and the Global Assessment Scale. Patients were enrolled in an individual psychotherapy and allocated to cognitive behavior or psychodynamic approach according to specific criteria. Psychotherapists who were not involved in the assessment phase administered the treatment. The majority of students was female and the most severe conditions emerged among students enrolled in philosophy, arts, and communication and medical schools. At posttreatment, all students improved both in terms of well-being and distress, regardless of the type of psychotherapy received. This improvement emerged both by students' self-report and clinicians' evaluations. These findings point to the feasibility and clinical utility of psychotherapy in promoting well-being and reducing young adults' distress. The importance of university counseling services for promoting students' mental health, and a positive transition to adulthood is discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record

RESUMEN

We investigated the psychological impact of testing for the presence of thrombophilic alterations. The enrolled subjects received counseling from a physician before blood sampling and after receiving results, with a view to provide clear information about the aim of thrombophilia screening (TS). Participants were requested to complete a pre-test questionnaire during this interview and a post-test questionnaire 20 days after receiving the TS results. One hundred ninety-seven subjects completed the pretest questionnaire and 140/197 (71.1%) returned the post-test one. The TS results were altered in 36 (25.7%, R506Q mutation n = 19; G20210A mutation n = 9; antithrombin deficiency n = 1; LAC phenomenon n = 4; hyperhomocysteinemia n = 3) and normal in 104 subjects. We assessed: perceived health status (PHS), state of anxiety, health fears, depressive reactions, moods, perceived well-being, and perceived daily-life stress. For both groups, both at pre- and post-test, none of the psychological variable scores showed significant worsening, regardless of whether TS resulted altered or normal. Anxiety significantly (p < or = 0.05) decreased at post-test in the altered group and a non-significant improvement in PHS after TS result communication was recorded in both groups. Age was an important factor in mediating psychological impact. In conclusion, diagnosis of thrombophilic alterations seems to be well accepted in the short term and TS should not be discouraged for potential adverse psychological effects. However, the psychological impact over a longer period of receiving altered results needs to be further investigated. The relationship between absence of adverse psychological reactions and quality of counseling program provided before and after TS should also be investigated.
