RESUMEN

Soil microbiomes are heterogeneous, complex microbial communities. Metagenomic analysis is generating vast amounts of data, creating immense challenges in sequence assembly and analysis. Although advances in technology have resulted in the ability to easily collect large amounts of sequence data, soil samples containing thousands of unique taxa are often poorly characterized. These challenges reduce the usefulness of genome-resolved metagenomic (GRM) analysis seen in other fields of microbiology, such as the creation of high quality metagenomic assembled genomes and the adoption of genome scale modeling approaches. The absence of these resources restricts the scale of future research, limiting hypothesis generation and the predictive modeling of microbial communities. Creating publicly available databases of soil MAGs, similar to databases produced for other microbiomes, has the potential to transform scientific insights about soil microbiomes without requiring the computational resources and domain expertise for assembly and binning.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In the context of an increasing older population, knowing the surgical outcomes of older patients is of paramount importance to define a comprehensive strategy for colon cancer treatment in these patients. This study aimed to analyze the surgical outcomes and survival of patients over 80 years old undergoing surgery for colon cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an observational retrospective longitudinal study of patients over 80 years old with colon cancer diagnosis who underwent surgery for this condition, between 2018 and 2021, in a Portuguese hospital. Demographic and clinical features were characterized. Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis. RESULTS: Out of 90 patients in the study, 41.1% were female. The majority (56.7%) had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status of 1 or 0, with a median Charlson Comorbidity Index of 7.0. Tumors were primarily located in the right colon (52.2%) and sigmoid colon (25.6%), with most patients having stage II (35.6%) or stage III (25.5%) disease. Elective surgeries accounted for 73% of procedures, and 80.0% had curative intent, with laparoscopic surgery performed in 66.7% of cases. Only 8.3% of those undergoing curative-intent procedures received adjuvant chemotherapy. Emergent admissions were associated with more advanced cancer stages, higher rates of palliative intent procedures (45.8% versus 10.6%, p < 0.001), and more open surgeries (75.0% versus 9.1%, p < 0.001) when compared to elective procedures. Postoperative mortality was higher in the emergent group (20.8% versus 10.6%), though there was no association between the type of admission and postoperative complications. Median overall survival for all patients was 36.7 (95% CI 28.1 to 45.3) months, with significant differences between curative-intent and palliative surgeries (median of 39.8 (95% CI 32.6 to 47.0) versus 10.6 (95% CI 0.67 to 20.5) months, p = 0.015). The elective group of patients had significantly better overall survival compared to the emergent group (median of 36.7 (95% CI 30.7 to 42.7) versus 11.9 (95% CI 6.0 to 17.8) months, p = 0.01). Among the patients who underwent curative-intent procedures, there were no significant differences in overall or disease-free survival between elective and emergent groups. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the increased complexity of managing older patients, particularly in emergent cases, these findings emphasize the importance of elective, curative-intent surgeries to optimize overall survival. Effective treatment strategies and perioperative management tailored to this age group are essential for improving surgical outcomes and extending survival in elderly colon cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) has a substantial socioeconomic impact associated with impaired work productivity. OBJECTIVE: To study the impact of AR on work productivity and estimate the corresponding indirect costs for 40 countries. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using direct patient data from the MASK-air app on users with self-reported AR. We used the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Questionnaire: Allergy Specific to measure the impact of AR on work productivity (presenteeism and absenteeism). Weekly indirect costs were estimated per country for each level of rhinitis control. Patients with and without asthma were considered. RESULTS: We assessed data from 677 weeks (364 patients), 280 of which were reported by patients with asthma. Regarding presenteeism, the median impact of AR in weeks of poor disease control was 60.7% (percentiles 25-75 [P25-P75] 24.9%-74.2%), whereas partial and good disease control were, respectively, associated with an impact of 25.0% (P25-P75 12.1%-42.4%) and 4.4% (P25-P75 0.8%-12.9%). In poorly controlled weeks, presenteeism was associated with indirect costs ranging from 65.7 US$ purchase power parities (PPPs) (P25-P75 29.2-143.2) in Brazil to 693.6 US$ PPP (P25-P75 405.2-1,094.9) in Iceland. Median absenteeism per week was of 0% for all levels of rhinitis control. Patients with AR + asthma showed higher overall work impairment than patients with AR alone, particularly in poorly controlled weeks (median work impairment in AR alone 39.1% [P25-P75 12.5%-71.9%]; median work impairment in AR + asthma 68.4% [P25-P75 54.6%-80.2%]). CONCLUSIONS: Poor AR control was associated with decreased work productivity and increased indirect costs, particularly in patients with AR + asthma. The estimates from this study underpin the economic burden of AR.

Seasonal floodplains in the Amazon basin are important sources of methane (CH4), while upland forests are known for their sink capacity. Climate change effects, including shifts in rainfall patterns and rising temperatures, may alter the functionality of soil microbial communities, leading to uncertain changes in CH4 cycling dynamics. To investigate the microbial feedback under climate change scenarios, we performed a microcosm experiment using soils from two floodplains (i.e., Amazonas and Tapajós rivers) and one upland forest. We employed a two-factorial experimental design comprising flooding (with non-flooded control) and temperature (at 27 °C and 30 °C, representing a 3 °C increase) as variables. We assessed prokaryotic community dynamics over 30 days using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and qPCR. These data were integrated with chemical properties, CH4 fluxes, and isotopic values and signatures. In the floodplains, temperature changes did not significantly affect the overall microbial composition and CH4 fluxes. CH4 emissions and uptake in response to flooding and non-flooding conditions, respectively, were observed in the floodplain soils. By contrast, in the upland forest, the higher temperature caused a sink-to-source shift under flooding conditions and reduced CH4 sink capability under dry conditions. The upland soil microbial communities also changed in response to increased temperature, with a higher percentage of specialist microbes observed. Floodplains showed higher total and relative abundances of methanogenic and methanotrophic microbes compared to forest soils. Isotopic data from some flooded samples from the Amazonas river floodplain indicated CH4 oxidation metabolism. This floodplain also showed a high relative abundance of aerobic and anaerobic CH4 oxidizing Bacteria and Archaea. Taken together, our data indicate that CH4 cycle dynamics and microbial communities in Amazonian floodplain and upland forest soils may respond differently to climate change effects. We also highlight the potential role of CH4 oxidation pathways in mitigating CH4 emissions in Amazonian floodplains.

Mining activities put the Brazilian savannas, a global biodiversity hotspot, in danger of species and soil carbon losses. Experiments employing biosolids have been applied to rejuvenate this degraded ecosystem, but a lingering question yet to be answered is whether the microbiota that inhabits these impoverished soils can be recovered towards its initial steady state after vegetation recovery. Here, we selected an 18-year-old restoration chronosequence of biosolids-treated, untreated mining and native soils to investigate the soil microbiota recovery based on composition, phylogeny, and diversity, as well as the potential factors responsible for ecosystem recovery. Our results revealed that the soil microbiota holds a considerable recovery potential in the degraded Cerrado biome. Biosolids application not only improved soil health, but also led to 41.7 % recovery of the whole microbial community, featuring significantly higher microbiota diversity and enriched groups (e.g., Firmicutes) that benefit carbon storage compared to untreated mining and native soils. The recovered community showed significant compositional distinctions from the untreated mining or native soils, rather than phylogenetic differences, with physiochemical properties explaining 55 % of the overall community changes. This study advances our understanding of soil microbiota dynamics in response to disturbance and restoration by shedding light on its recovery associated with biosolid application in a degraded biodiverse ecosystem.

Soil desertification poses a critical ecological challenge in arid and semiarid climates worldwide, leading to decreased soil productivity due to the disruption of essential microbial community processes. Fungi, as one of the most important soil microbial communities, play a crucial role in enhancing nutrient and water uptake by plants through mycorrhizal associations. However, the impact of overgrazing-induced desertification on fungal community structure, particularly in the Caatinga biome of semiarid regions, remains unclear. In this study, we assessed the changes in both the total fungal community and the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal community (AMF) across 1. Natural vegetation (native), 2. Grazing exclusion (20 years) (restored), and 3. affected by overgrazing-induced degradation (degraded) scenarios. Our assessment, conducted during both the dry and rainy seasons in Irauçuba, Ceará, utilized Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) gene sequencing via Illumina® platform. Our findings highlighted the significant roles of the AMF families Glomeraceae (∼71% of the total sequences) and Acaulosporaceae (∼14% of the total sequences) as potential key taxa in mitigating climate change within dryland areas. Moreover, we identified the orders Pleosporales (∼35% of the total sequences) and Capnodiales (∼21% of the total sequences) as the most abundant soil fungal communities in the Caatinga biome. The structure of the total fungal community differed when comparing native and restored areas to degraded areas. Total fungal communities from native and restored areas clustered together, suggesting that grazing exclusion has the potential to improve soil properties and recover fungal community structure amid global climate change challenges.

Objective: Some patients with cancer admitted to palliative care have relatively long survivals of 1 year or more. The objective of this study was to find out factors associated with prolonged survival. Methods: Retrospective case-control study comparing the available data of patients with cancer who survived more than 1 year after admission in a palliative care service with patients with cancer who survived 6 months or less. The intended proportion was 4 controls for each case. Patients were identified through electronic records from 2012 until 2018. Results: And 1721 patients were identified. Of those patients, 111 (6.4%) survived for at least 1 year, and 363 (21.1%) were included as controls according to the established criteria. The intended proportion could not be reached; the proportion was only 3.3:1. The median survival of cases was 581 days (range: 371-2763), and the median survival of controls was 57 days (range: 1-182). In the multivariable analysis, patients with a hemoglobin ≥ 10.6 g/dL and a creatinine level >95 µmol/L had a higher probability of living more than 1 year. In contrast, patients with abnormal cognition, pain, anorexia, liver metastases, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status >1, and a neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio ≥ 3.43 had a low probability of living more than 1 year. Conclusion: Several factors were statistically associated positively or negatively with prolonged survival. However, the data of this study should be confirmed in other studies.

Deforestation of tropical rainforests is a major land use change that alters terrestrial biogeochemical cycling at local to global scales. Deforestation and subsequent reforestation are likely to impact soil phosphorus (P) cycling, which in P-limited ecosystems such as the Amazon basin has implications for long-term productivity. We used a 100-year replicated observational chronosequence of primary forest conversion to pasture, as well as a 13-year-old secondary forest, to test land use change and duration effects on soil P dynamics in the Amazon basin. By combining sequential extraction and P K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy with soil phosphatase activity assays, we assessed pools and process rates of P cycling in surface soils (0-10 cm depth). Deforestation caused increases in total P (135-398 mg kg-1 ), total organic P (Po ) (19-168 mg kg-1 ), and total inorganic P (Pi ) (30-113 mg kg-1 ) fractions in surface soils with pasture age, with concomitant increases in Pi fractions corroborated by sequential fractionation and XANES spectroscopy. Soil non-labile Po (10-148 mg kg-1 ) increased disproportionately compared to labile Po (from 4-5 to 7-13 mg kg-1 ). Soil phosphomonoesterase and phosphodiesterase binding affinity (Km ) decreased while the specificity constant (Ka ) increased by 83%-159% in 39-100y pastures. Soil P pools and process rates reverted to magnitudes similar to primary forests within 13 years of pasture abandonment. However, the relatively short but representative pre-abandonment pasture duration of our secondary forest may not have entailed significant deforestation effects on soil P cycling, highlighting the need to consider both pasture duration and reforestation age in evaluations of Amazon land use legacies. Although the space-for-time substitution design can entail variation in the initial soil P pools due to atmospheric P deposition, soil properties, and/or primary forest growth, the trend of P pools and process rates with pasture age still provides valuable insights.

BACKGROUND: EQ-5D-5L (EuroQOL, 5 Domains, 5 Levels) is a widely used health-related quality-of-life instrument, comprising 5 domains. However, it is not known how each domain is impacted by rhinitis or asthma control. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between rhinitis or asthma control and the different EQ-5D-5L domains using data from the MASK-air mHealth app. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we assessed data from all MASK-air users (2015-2021; 24 countries). For the levels of each EQ-5D-5L domain, we assessed rhinitis and asthma visual analog scales (VASs) and the combined symptom-medication score (CSMS). We built ordinal multivariable models assessing the adjusted association between VAS/CSMS values and the levels of each EQ-5D-5L domain. Finally, we compared EQ-5D-5L data from users with rhinitis and self-reported asthma with data from users with rhinitis alone. RESULTS: We assessed 5354 days from 3092 users. We observed an association between worse control of rhinitis or asthma (higher VASs and CSMS) and worse EQ-5D-5L levels. In multivariable models, all VASs and the CSMS were associated with higher levels of pain/discomfort and daily activities. For anxiety/depression, the association was mostly observed for rhinitis-related tools (VAS nose, VAS global, and CSMS), although the presence of self-reported asthma was also associated with worse anxiety/depression. Worse mobility ("walking around") was particularly associated with VAS asthma and with the presence of asthma. CONCLUSIONS: A worse rhinitis control and a worse asthma control are associated with higher EQ-5D-5L levels, particularly regarding pain/discomfort and activity impairment. Worse rhinitis control is associated with worse anxiety/depression, and poor asthma control with worse mobility.

Nitrate (NO3-) leaching is a serious health and ecological concern in global agroecosystems, particularly those under the application of agricultural-managed aquifer recharge (Ag-MAR); however, there is an absence of information on microbial controls affecting NO3- leaching outcomes. We combine natural dual isotopes of NO3- (15N/14N and 18O/16O) with metagenomics, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and a threshold indicator taxa analysis (TITAN) to investigate the activities, taxon profiles, and environmental controls of soil microbiome associated with NO3- leaching at different depths from Californian vineyards under Ag-MAR application. The isotopic signatures demonstrated a significant priming effect (P < 0.01) of Ag-MAR on denitrification activities in the topsoil (0-10 cm), with a 12-25-fold increase of 15N-NO3- and 18O-NO3- after the first 24 h of flooding, followed by a sharp decrease in the enrichment of both isotopes with ∼80% decline in denitrification activities thereafter. In contrast, deeper soils (60-100 cm) showed minimal or no denitrification activities over the course of Ag-MAR application, thus resulting in 10-20-fold of residual NO3- being leached. Metagenomic profiling and laboratory microcosm demonstrated that both nitrifying and denitrifying groups, responsible for controlling NO3- leaching, decreased in abundance and potential activity rates with soil depth. TITAN suggested that Nitrosocosmicus and Bradyrhizobium, as the major nitrifier and denitrifier, had the highest and lowest tipping points with regard to the NO3- changes (P < 0.05), respectively. Overall, our study provides new insight into specific depth limitations of microbial controls on soil NO3- leaching in agroecosystems.

AIM: This study aimed to investigate whether the site of the tumour within the right colon affects survival in patients who underwent right colectomy for colon cancer. METHODS: An observational retrospective longitudinal study was performed in patients who underwent right colectomy for non-metastatic, invasive right-sided colon cancer. Patients were categorized into two groups based on tumour location: (i) caecum and ascending colon; (ii) hepatic flexure and proximal transverse colon. Demographic and clinical features were characterized, and a survival analysis was performed. RESULTS: Of the 198 patients enroled in the study, 134 (67.8%) had caecal or ascending colon cancer and 64 (32.3%) had hepatic flexure or transverse colon cancer. Seventy (35.4%) were female and the mean age at the time of surgery was 71.6 (SD 11.4). The groups were comparable with respect to the number of lymph nodes sampled, the pTNM stage, the histological differentiation grade and the likelihood of patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. Recurrence rate was nearly twice as high in the hepatic flexure and proximal transverse colon group (12.5% vs 6.7%), but this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.174). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed no differences in disease-free (p = 0.255) and overall survival (p = 0.258) between the groups. CONCLUSION: In our population, specific location of right-sided colon cancers does not appear to have an influence on survival. Further investigation is needed to determine if tumour subsite has an impact on the recurrence rate, and whether it should be considered in defining prognosis and treatment.

PURPOSE: Polypharmacy in cancer patients is a recognized issue and should be an integral part of comprehensive patient assessment and management. Despite this, a systematic review of concomitant drugs or a search for potential drug-drug interactions (DDIs) is not always performed. Here, we present the results of a medication reconciliation model performed by a multidisciplinary team to identify clinically meaningful potential DDIs (defined by the presence of DDI of major severity or contraindication) in cancer patients undergoing oral antineoplastic drugs. METHODS: From June to December 2022, we performed a non-interventional, prospective, cross-sectional, single-center study of adult cancer patients, initiating or undergoing treatment with oral antineoplastic drugs, referred by their oncologists for therapeutic review regarding potential DDIs. DDIs were assessed by a multidisciplinary team of hospital pharmacists and medical oncologists, through research in three different drug databases as well as in the summary of product characteristics. A report detailing all potential DDIs was created for each request and provided to the patient's medical oncologist for further examination. RESULTS: Overall, 142 patients' medications were reviewed. Regardless of the severity or clinical importance, 70.4% of patients had at least one potential DDI. We found 184 combinations of oral anticancer and regular therapy agents with potential DDIs, 55 of whom were considered of major severity by at least one DDI database. As expected, the number of potential DDIs increased with the number of active substances in regular therapy (p < 0.001), but we did not find an increased relation between age and the total number of potential DDIs (p = 0.109). Thirty-nine (27.5%) patients had at least one clinically meaningful DDI identified. After adjustment through multivariable logistic regression, only the female sex (odds ratio (OR) 3.01, p = 0.029), the number of active comorbidities (OR 0.60, p = 0.029), and the presence of proton pump inhibitors in chronic medication (OR 2.99, p = 0.033) remained as predictors of potential meaningful DDI. CONCLUSION: Although drug interactions are a concern in oncology, a systematic DDI review is rarely conducted in medical oncology consultations. The availability of a medication reconciliation service, carried out by a multidisciplinary team with dedicated time for this task, is an added value for safety enhancement in cancer patients.

Deforestation threatens the integrity of the Amazon biome and the ecosystem services it provides, including greenhouse gas mitigation. Forest-to-pasture conversion has been shown to alter the flux of methane gas (CH4 ) in Amazonian soils, driving a switch from acting as a sink to a source of atmospheric CH4 . This study aimed to better understand this phenomenon by investigating soil microbial metagenomes, focusing on the taxonomic and functional structure of methane-cycling communities. Metagenomic data from forest and pasture soils were combined with measurements of in situ CH4 fluxes and soil edaphic factors and analysed using multivariate statistical approaches. We found a significantly higher abundance and diversity of methanogens in pasture soils. As inferred by co-occurrence networks, these microorganisms seem to be less interconnected within the soil microbiota in pasture soils. Metabolic traits were also different between land uses, with increased hydrogenotrophic and methylotrophic pathways of methanogenesis in pasture soils. Land-use change also induced shifts in taxonomic and functional traits of methanotrophs, with bacteria harbouring genes encoding the soluble form of methane monooxygenase enzyme (sMMO) depleted in pasture soils. Redundancy analysis and multimodel inference revealed that the shift in methane-cycling communities was associated with high pH, organic matter, soil porosity and micronutrients in pasture soils. These results comprehensively characterize the effect of forest-to-pasture conversion on the microbial communities driving the methane-cycling microorganisms in the Amazon rainforest, which will contribute to the efforts to preserve this important biome.

A thermophilic, chemolithoautotrophic, and aerobic microbial consortium (termed carbonitroflex) growing in a nutrient-poor medium and an atmosphere containing N2, O2, CO2, and CO is investigated as a model to expand our understanding of extreme biological systems. Here we show that the consortium is dominated by Carbonactinospora thermoautotrophica (strain StC), followed by Sphaerobacter thermophilus, Chelatococcus spp., and Geobacillus spp. Metagenomic analysis of the consortium reveals a mutual relationship among bacteria, with C. thermoautotrophica StC exhibiting carboxydotrophy and carbon-dioxide storage capacity. C. thermoautotrophica StC, Chelatococcus spp., and S. thermophilus harbor genes encoding CO dehydrogenase and formate oxidase. No pure cultures were obtained under the original growth conditions, indicating that a tightly regulated interactive metabolism might be required for group survival and growth in this extreme oligotrophic system. The breadwinner hypothesis is proposed to explain the metabolic flux model and highlight the vital role of C. thermoautotrophica StC (the sole keystone species and primary carbon producer) in the survival of all consortium members. Our data may contribute to the investigation of complex interactions in extreme environments, exemplifying the interconnections and dependency within microbial communities.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) has been identified as a cause of olfactory dysfunction. Beyond the classic symptoms, AR has been associated with altered sleep patterns, a decline in cognitive performance and higher likelihood of depression and anxiety. The olfactory pathway has been postulated to be a possible link between nasal inflammation and central nervous system (CNS) modifications. Thus, we aimed to investigate the structural, functional and behavioral changes in the olfactory pathway and related areas in an animal model of AR. METHODS: AR was induced in adult Wistar rats by ovalbumin sensitization and challenge. Following olfactory and behavioral tests we investigated the synaptic structure of the olfactory bulb (OB), anterior olfactory nuclei (AON), piriform cortex and prefrontal cortex (PFC), by immunofluorescence detection of synaptophysin (Syn) and glutamatergic, GABAergic and dopaminergic neuronal markers. RESULTS: We detected a significant decrease in Syn in the glomerular layer (GL) of OB and in the PFC of the AR group. Additionally, the optical density of GAD67 and VGLUT2 was reduced in the OB, AON and PFC, compared to controls. The behavioral tests demonstrated olfactory dysfunction and reduced male aggressiveness in AR rats, but we did not find any difference in the cognition and anxiety-like behavior. CONCLUSIONS: We confirmed olfactory dysfunction in a rat model of AR and we identified modifications in synaptic activity by reduction of Syn optical density in the GL of the OB and in the PFC. This was accompanied by structural changes in glutamatergic and GABAergic activity in essential components of the olfactory pathway and PFC.

INTRODUCTION: With the widespread introduction of conjugate meningococcal and pneumococcal vaccines, the prevalence and etiology of invasive bacterial infections have changed. We aimed to review all cases of bacteremia in a level II pediatric department over a ten-year period in the post-pneumococcal conjugate vaccine era. METHODS: We reviewed all positive blood cultures (BC) obtained in our department between 2007 and 2016. Results were classified as contaminants, potential pathogens or confirmed pathogens, based on species, number of positive BC in the episode and the patients' medical history. Demographic and clinical data were collected for patients with identified pathogens. RESULTS: A total of 638 positive BC were identified (6.6% of total BC); 120 (1.2%) were considered to represent true bacteremia. The most frequently identified microorganism was Streptococcus pneumoniae (29.2%), with a decrease in the number of cases between 2008 and 2015. Staphylococcus aureus was the second most common organism (19.2%) being 21.7% of these methicillin-resistant. Escherichia coli was the most common isolate in children aged less than three months. CONCLUSION: We found a rate of true bacteremia in children similar to recent studies. Although Streptococcus pneumoniae remains the most common microorganism, its prevalence may be declining. Monitoring microbiological data in children has implications in practice, particularly in local antibiotic prescription.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has increased students' stress as they may feel under increased pressure to have a good performance and compensate for the disruption to their education. Improving attention levels and learning capacity may assist in ameliorating academic performance. Qigong is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that appears to have positive effects on the management of mental health and may provide tools for coping with stressful situations. This paper explores data obtained while conducting a previous study and includes an excess of data from a total of 44 participants who were previously divided into an experimental Qigong group and a sham Qigong control group. The improvements in specific auditory processing and reaction times may indicate benefits in attention and learning capacity. These improvements were more pronounced in the experimental Qigong group compared to the sham Qigong group. Qigong may be able to assist in improving students' academic performance and can be easily integrated into physical education classes. It could also assist students to cope with the increased academic pressure resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic context.

PURPOSE: Facial nerve dysfunction (FND) is a frequent and serious parotidectomy outcome. Intraoperative facial nerve monitoring (IFNM) is an increasingly used technique to identify the facial nerve (FN) and minimize its injury. This study aimed to evaluate the determinant factors in the presence and severity of FND after parotidectomy, including IFNM. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING AND METHODS: A total of 48 patients consecutively submitted to parotidectomy between 2005 and 2020 in a tertiary hospital were retrospectively analyzed. The House-Brackmann Scale (HBS) was used to assess the severity of FND. RESULTS: There was a mean age of 54.2 ± 17.8 years, 50% were male. Pleomorphic adenoma (41.7%) and Warthin's tumor (25.0%) were most common. From the 23 patients (47.9%) who developed some degree of FND (HBS score of 3.41 ± 1.53), 19 (82.6%) showed facial movement recovery, with a mean recovery time of 4.78 ± 2.53 months. IFNM was performed in 39.6% of the surgeries. The use of IFNM (p = 0.514), the type of surgery-partial or total parotidectomy-(p = 0.853) and the type of histology-benign or malignant lesion-(p = 0.852) did not significantly influence the presence of FND in the postoperative period. However, in the subgroup of patients who developed FND, the HBS value was significantly lower in cases of benign pathology (p = 0.002) and in patients who underwent IFNM (p = 0.017), denoting a significantly lower severity. CONCLUSION: In the present study, IFNM and the existence of a benign lesion have been shown to be associated with lower severity of FND.
