Despite its rarity, pilonidal sinus (PNS) in atypical locations poses significant diagnostic challenges, underscoring the need for early identification and appropriate treatment strategies. This case highlights a rare occurrence of a PNS in the axilla, emphasizing the importance of recognizing uncommon presentations of common ailments. A 27-year-old male presented with a 13-year history of painless axillary discharge, diagnosed with PNS based on clinical evaluation. Surgical excision under local anesthesia successfully treated the condition, showcasing the effectiveness of tailored management in addressing rare presentations of PNS. Surgical therapy for axillary pilonidal sinus enables complete resection and provides precise histopathological diagnoses, making it a suitable treatment option, particularly for cases involving atypical locations.

Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) experience not only a detrimental impact on their physical health but also a significant influence on their psychological well-being. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of IBS among university students, investigating the sociodemographic and lifestyle factors influencing its onset. Furthermore, it explored the potential impact of psychological factors such as depression, anxiety, and overall well-being on the prevalence of IBS. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at Saudi Arabian universities in November and December 2023. To collect data, an anonymous, validated, predesigned questionnaire was used. The diagnosis of IBS was carried out using the validated Arabic version of the Rome IV questionnaire. We used the Arabic version of the World Health Organization Well-being Index to assess the participants' well-being. We used the Arabic version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to identify people who show clinically significant symptoms of anxiety and depression. Our study included a total of 379 university students, 46.7% were female 86.0% of participants resided in urban areas, and 7.2% had been previously diagnosed with IBS. The prevalence of IBS among participants was found to be 31.9%. We observed a significant association between marital status and IBS (χ2 = 3.95, P = .047). Furthermore, the highest prevalence of IBS was observed among students majoring in literary and scientific disciplines (χ2 = 0.952, P = .049). Individuals with IBS demonstrate a significantly higher prevalence of anxiety (71.90% vs 41.09%, P < .001) and depression (64.46% vs 42.64%, P < .001) compared to those without IBS. Furthermore, people with IBS had a slightly higher prevalence of poor well-being (38.84%) compared to those without IBS (33.72%), but this association was not statistically significant. In multivariate analysis, having a family history of IBS [OR = 1.75 (95% CI, 1.06-2.87), P = .029] having borderline anxiety [OR = 7.58, 95% CI (2.12-27.06), P = .012] and anxiety [OR = 16.07, 95% CI (4.57-56.52), P < .001], and depression [OR = 2.97, 95% CI (1.13-7.83), P = .010] were the main significant predictors of IBS among university students. The high prevalence of IBS among university students was associated with a family history of IBS as well as depression and anxiety. Increasing awareness, multidisciplinary support, and access to mental health services is required to ensure university students' well-being.

Background/Objectives: Cholesteatoma presents significant management challenges in otolaryngology. This study aimed to delineate the influence of demographic and clinical characteristics, preoperative imaging, and surgical approaches on treatment success in cholesteatoma management. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at the Otolaryngology Department of the University Hospital from January 2021 to December 2022. It included 68 patients diagnosed with cholesteatoma, focusing on three objectives: assessing the impact of demographic and clinical characteristics on treatment outcomes, evaluating the predictive value of preoperative imaging findings, and analyzing the influence of surgical factors. Results: The study population predominantly consisted of male (56%) and Saudi (81%) patients, with an average age of 45 years. Logistic regression revealed that older age (OR: 1.05), male gender (OR: 0.63), and non-Saudi Arab ethnicity (OR: 2.14) significantly impacted treatment outcomes. Clinical characteristics such as severe disease severity (OR: 3.00) and longer symptom duration (OR: 0.96) also influenced treatment success. In preoperative imaging, labyrinthine fistula (Regression Coefficient: 0.63) and epidural extension (Coefficient: 0.55) emerged as key predictors. The surgical factors that significantly affected the outcomes included the extent of surgery (Complete Removal OR: 3.32) and the use of endoscopic approaches (OR: 1.42). Conclusions: This study highlights that patient demographics, clinical profiles, specific preoperative imaging features, and surgical strategies multifactorially determine cholesteatoma treatment success. These findings suggest the necessity for a tailored approach in cholesteatoma management, reinforcing the importance of individualized treatment plans based on comprehensive preoperative assessments.

Our understanding of the immune response is far from complete, missing out on more detailed explanations that could be provided by molecular insights. To bridge this gap, we introduce the quantum model of T-cell activation. This model suggests that the transfer of energy during protein phosphorylation within T cells is not a continuous flow but occurs in discrete bursts, or 'quanta', of phosphates. This quantized energy transfer is mediated by oscillating cycles of receptor phosphorylation and dephosphorylation, initiated by dynamic 'catch-slip' pulses in the peptide-major histocompatibility complex-T-cell receptor (pMHC-TcR) interactions. T-cell activation is predicated upon achieving a critical threshold of catch-slip pulses at the pMHC-TcR interface. Costimulation is relegated to a secondary role, becoming crucial only when the frequency of pMHC-TcR catch-slip pulses does not meet the necessary threshold for this quanta-based energy transfer. Therefore, our model posits that it is the quantum nature of energy transfer-not the traditional signal I or signal II-that plays the decisive role in T-cell activation. This paradigm shift highlights the importance of understanding T-cell activation through a quantum lens, offering a potentially transformative perspective on immune response regulation.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a significant hematological disorder affecting populations worldwide, with a notable prevalence in certain regions of Saudi Arabia. Despite extensive screening programs, there is a critical need for improved public health education to enhance understanding and management of SCD. This study examines the relationship between the attitudes and behaviors of parents toward their children's disease and its management. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional observational study at the King Fahd Medical Research Center in Jeddah. This research encompassed children aged 5-16 years with SCD and their parents. Comprehensive questionnaires assessed sociodemographic data, attitudes toward SCD, and behavioral responses to the illness and treatment. RESULTS: The study included 66 parents, predominantly in the age range of 30-39 years and earning below 5000 Saudi Riyals, who exhibited varying attitudes towards SCD, with a majority questioning the availability of a cure and expressing caution towards new treatments. Despite a cautious approach to invasive treatments, parents relied on information from healthcare providers. Attitudes towards treatment showed significant differences based on gender and education level, with females and less-educated parents exhibiting more hesitancy towards new treatment and blood transfusions. CONCLUSION: The study indicates that while parents show a positive and proactive attitude toward SCD, there is hesitancy towards new and invasive treatments, reflecting the need for continued educational support. The results underscore the importance of tailored healthcare communication strategies to address the diverse needs of families affected by SCD.

Introduction The obesity epidemic has been linked to a wide range of health and nutritional problems, including anemia, which is often caused by impaired iron metabolism. The World Health Organization considers anemia and obesity to be global health issues among adolescent girls and women experiencing menstruation. This study aims to examine the association between iron deficiency anemia and obesity/overweight among female medical students. Methodology This cross-sectional descriptive study conducted as an online self-administered questionnaire. Furthermore, blood samples were collected from 206 students to evaluate the complete blood count, iron and lipid profile. Results The convenience sampling technique was used and a total of 206 students were enrolled in the study. The average body mass index (BMI) was 22.51 ± 3.25, with 83.5% (n = 172) falling within the normal weight range, 12.6% (n = 26) as overweight, and 3.9% (n = 8) as obese. Anemia was present in 16.0% (n = 33) of the participants overall. Higher prevalence of anemia was observed among overweight participants with 10 out of 26 (38.5%) subjects compared to obese with two out of eight (25.0%) and normal weight 21 out of 172 (12.2%); this difference was highly significant (P = 0.005). Individuals with anemia exhibited a significant association with those experiencing a diet full of unhealthy fats and carbohydrates (P = 0.05) and a diet containing all essential nutrients (P = 0.01). There is no statistically significant correlation between anemia prevalence and participants' response to the presence of signs of anemia, physical activity or other dietary habits. Obese participants had a significantly higher mean value of triglycerides (129.5 ± 20.5) compared to normal weight and overweight participants (74.5 ± 12.02 and 51.2 ± 15.04), respectively (P = 0.001). Conclusion A dependable assembly exists between obesity and overweight in cases of iron deficient anemia. The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia was substantially higher among overweight/obese females, highlighting that overweight/obesity signifies both quantitative and qualitative malnutrition. A high BMI was associated with elevated triglycerides, typically considered indicators of obesity. This association may suggest compromised iron homeostasis.

In this study, the interaction between human serum albumin (HSA) and the hydroxychloroquine/Silybum marianum (HCQ/SM) mixture was investigated using various techniques. The observed high binding constant (Kb) and Stern-Volmer quenching constant (KSV) indicate a strong binding affinity between the HCQ/SM mixture and HSA. The circular dichroism (CD) analysis revealed that HCQ/SM induced conformational changes in the secondary structure of HSA, leading to a decrease in the α-helical content. UV-Vis analysis exhibited a slight redshift, indicating that the HCQ/SM mixture could adapt to the flexible structure of HSA. The experimental results demonstrated the significant conformational changes in HSA upon binding with HCQ/SM. Theoretical studies were carried out using molecular dynamics simulation via the Gromacs simulation package to explore insights into the drug interaction with HSA-binding sites. Furthermore, molecular docking studies demonstrated that HCQ/SM-HSA exhibited favorable docking scores with the receptor (5FUZ), suggesting a potential therapeutic relevance in combating COVID-19 with a value of -6.24 kcal mol-1. HCQ/SM exhibited stronger interaction with both SARS-CoV-2 virus main proteases compared to favipiravir. Ultimately, the experimental data and molecular docking analysis presented in this research offer valuable insights into the pharmaceutical and biological properties of HCQ/SM mixtures when interacting with serum albumin.

This article reviews the existing literature on diagnostic and medical imaging of pregnant women, the risks and safety measures of different medical imaging modalities, and alternative modalities for imaging pregnant patients. Different medical imaging modalities such as MRI, CT scan, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and X-ray imaging help to evaluate women with recognized or unrecognized pregnancies and identify any underlying complications among pregnant patients. Fetuses are more sensitive to radiation and the effects of medical imaging as compared to adults since they have a rapidly developing cell system. During cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation, fetuses suffer greatly from imaging radiation since they are developing under a dynamic system. To ensure safety, pregnant women should discuss the benefits and risks of medical imaging with their physicians. In addition, radiologists should not perform any medical imaging procedure without the patient's consent, unless the patient cannot make any sound decision. Fetal risks of medical imaging include slow growth and development of the fetus, abortion, malformations, impaired brain function, abnormal childhood growth, and neurological development. Diagnostic imaging procedures are necessary when a condition that needs medical evaluation arises during pregnancy such as appendicitis.

Breast cancer begins in the breast cells, mainly impacting women. It starts in the cells that line the milk ducts or lobules responsible for producing milk and can spread to nearby tissues and other body parts. In 2020, around 2.3 million women across the globe received a diagnosis, with an estimated 685,000 deaths. Additionally, 7.8 million women were living with breast cancer, making it the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. The mutational changes, overexpression of drug efflux pumps, activation of alternative signalling pathways, tumour microenvironment, and cancer stem cells are causing higher levels of drug resistance, and one of the major solutions is to identify multitargeted drugs. In our research, we conducted a comprehensive screening using HTVS, SP, and XP, followed by an MM/GBSA computation of human-approved drugs targeting HER2/neu, BRCA1, PIK3CA, and ESR1. Our analysis pinpointed IRESSA (Gefitinib-DB00317) as a multitargeted inhibitor for these proteins, revealing docking scores ranging from -4.527 to -8.809 Kcal/mol and MM/GBSA scores between -49.09 and -61.74 Kcal/mol. We selected interacting residues as fingerprints, pinpointing 8LEU, 6VAL, 6LYS, 6ASN, 5ILE, and 5GLU as the most prevalent in interactions. Subsequently, we analysed the ADMET properties and compared them with the standard values of QikProp. We extended our study for DFT computations with Jaguar and plotted the electrostatic potential, HOMO and LUMO regions, and electron density, followed by a molecular dynamics simulation for 100 ns in water, showing an utterly stable performance, making it a suitable drug candidate. IRESSA is FDA-approved for lung cancer, which shares some pathways with breast cancers, clearing the hurdles of multitargeted drugs against breast and lung cancer. This has the potential to be groundbreaking; however, more studies are needed to concreate IRESSA's role.

Cervical cancer poses a substantial worldwide health challenge, especially in low- and middle-income nations, caused by high-risk types of human papillomavirus. It accounted for a significant percentage of cancer-related deaths among women, particularly in areas with limited healthcare resources, necessitating innovative therapeutic approaches, and single-targeted studies have produced significant results, with a considerable chance of developing resistance. Therefore, the multitargeted studies can work as a beacon of hope. This study is focused on performing the multitargeted molecular docking of FDA-approved drugs with the three crucial proteins TBK1, DNA polymerase epsilon, and integrin α-V ß-8 of cervical cancer. The docking studies using multisampling algorithms HTVS, SP, and XP reveal Pixantrone Maleate (DB06193) as a multitargeted inhibitor with docking scores of -8.147, -8.206 and -7.31 Kcal/mol and pose filtration with MM\GBSA computations with scores -40.55, -33.67, and -37.64 Kcal/mol. We also have performed QM-based DFT and pharmacokinetics studies of the compound and compared it with the standard values, which results in the compound being entirely suitable against cervical cancer proteins. The interaction fingerprints have revealed that PHE, VAL, SER and ALA are the residues among most interactions. We also explore the stability of the multitargeted potential of Pixantrone Maleate through 100ns MD simulations and investigate the RMSD, RMSF and intermolecular interactions between all three proteins-ligand complexes. All computational studies favour Pixantrone Maleate as a multitargeted inhibitor of the TBK1, DNA polymerase epsilon, and integrin α-V ß-8 and can be validated experimentally before use.

Inflammation plays an integral role in the complications of sickle cell disease (SCD), which can lead to vaso-occlusive crisis and extreme pain. SCD is accompanied by numerous complications, including cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline and endothelial dysfunction, contributing to mortality. As disease severity increases with age, the present study aimed to assess if age is also correlated with a definite pattern of progression of the two inflammatory markers, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and total homocysteine (tHCY). The findings of the present study could lead to an improved understanding of the threshold levels of these inflammatory markers and timely interventions to delay complications. In an observational study, levels of hsCRP and tHCY were analyzed in 70 patients (35 male and 35 female patients) with SCD aged between 5 and 16 years. hsCRP levels were in the high-risk range in 64.29% (n=45) of all male and female patients. A sex-wise distribution showed that, of the 35 male patients, 74.28% (n=26) were in the high-risk range, and of the 35 female patients, 54.28% (n=19) were in the high-risk range. An age-wise distribution showed that of the 41 patients in the 5-10-years age group, 70.73% (n=29), were in the high-risk range. In comparison, of the 29 patients in the 11-16-years age group, 55.17% (n=16) were in the high-risk range. tHCY levels were observed to be in the normal range in 98.57% (n=69) of all children, as compared with 1.43% (n=1) in the high-risk range. Furthermore, a sex-wise distribution showed that female patients in the high-risk group of hsCRP had higher concentrations of tHCY as compared with the male patients in that risk group. An age-wise distribution of hsCRP concentration also showed that the risk of CVD in patients in the 11-16-years age group was higher with increased concentrations of tHCY. A weak negative correlation was observed between age and hsCRP concentrations (r-value=-0.280; P=0.026) and a weak positive correlation was detected between tHCY and age (r-value=0.259; P=0.036). In conclusion, the results of the present study indicated that higher levels of hsCRP could be a useful marker in children with SCD, and levels of tHCY may be an adjunct marker as the disease progresses with age.

Background With type 2 diabetes (T2D) posing an escalating health challenge to the Kingdom of Bahrain, enhancing public awareness becomes instrumental in mitigating disease outcomes. This study aimed to appraise the level of T2D awareness among the non-medical Bahraini population by evaluating their understanding of the disease, its risk factors, symptoms, complications, monitoring, and prevention methods. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study from March 2022 to June 2022. The study employed an electronic survey using Google® Forms (Google LLC, Mountain View, California, USA) targeting non-healthcare workers aged 15 and above. The survey consisted of multiple yes-and-no questions designed to evaluate different aspects of respondents' T2D knowledge. Results Out of 835 participants, a total of 613 participants were included. The overall awareness of T2D was found to be average (70.6% CI±6.214, SD ±8.80%). The mean scores of correct answers in the different sections such as general knowledge, risk factors, symptoms, complications, treatment, monitoring, and prevention of T2D were 54.5% CI ±14.8, 75.5% CI±12.5, 77.6% CI±5.3, 61.8% CI±8.5, and 73.4% CI±5.4 respectively. Furthermore, the diabetic population scored an average of 76.7% in awareness in comparison to the non-diabetic population which scored 72.5% in overall awareness. Conclusions These findings underscore the pressing need to enhance T2D awareness among the Bahraini population. Implementing early education programs and strategically utilizing social media platforms may aid in bolstering public understanding of T2D, aiming ultimately to reduce its prevalence and associated economic burden.

Numerous papers have been studied for this purpose, and various nonlocal theories such as the nonlocal continuum damage model, stress field intensity model, peridynamics model, elastic-plastic models, energy-based model, nonlocal multiscale model, microstructural sensitive model, nonlocal lattice particle model, nonlocal high cycle fatigue model, low cycle fatigue model, nonlocal and gradient fracture criteria, nonlocal coupled damage plasticity model and nonlocal fracture criterion have been reviewed and summarized in the case of fatigue and fracture of solid structures and materials.

Abstract Objective Sickle cell disease is characterized by clinical complications resulting in vaso-occlusive crisis with prominent attributes of oxidative stress, inflammation, and pain. Inflammation is an integral part of this disease which further exacerbates the pain during a crisis. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-aggregatory properties and assist in diminishing the slow physiological inactivation. Methods A pilot nutritional interventional study was conducted wherein forty-three children with sickle cell disease aged 5-16 years were supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids for a period of six months. Analysis of oxidative stress, as well as inflammatory parameters, was done pre and post-supplementation. Results Increased free oxygen radical transference values depicting free radical generation is enhanced in these patients along with a reduced antioxidant defense, as seen by decreased free oxygen radical defense values. Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids for a period of six months significantly reduced the inflammatory marker homocysteine in all patients, whereas high sensitive C reactive protein was significantly reduced only in females of the age group 11-16years. Simultaneously a significant reduction in oxidative stress parameters with a concomitant increase of antioxidant defense was observed in all patients. Conclusion The authors' findings suggest the regulatory effects of omega-3 fatty acids as cellular activators in alleviating the complications due to sickle cell disease. Omega-3 fatty acids hold promise as future therapeutic candidates in patients with sickle cell disease.

Digital twins (DTs) play a vital role in revolutionising the healthcare industry, leading to more personalised, intelligent, and proactive healthcare. With the evolution of personalised healthcare, there is a significant need to represent a virtual replica for individuals to provide the right type of care in the right way and at the right time. Therefore, in this paper, we surveyed the concept of a personal digital twin (PDT) as an enhanced version of the DT with actionable insight capabilities. In particular, PDT can bring value to patients by enabling more accurate decision making and proper treatment selection and optimisation. Then, we explored the progression of PDT as a revolutionary technology in healthcare research and industry. However, although several research works have been performed for smart healthcare using DT, PDT is still at an early stage. Consequently, we believe that this work can be a step towards smart personalised healthcare industry by guiding the design of industrial personalised healthcare systems. Accordingly, we introduced a reference framework that empowers smart personalised healthcare using PDTs by bringing together existing advanced technologies (i.e., DT, blockchain, and AI). Then, we described some selected use cases, including the mitigation of COVID-19 contagion, COVID-19 survivor follow-up care, personalised COVID-19 medicine, personalised osteoporosis prevention, personalised cancer survivor follow-up care, and personalised nutrition. Finally, we identified further challenges to pave the PDT paradigm toward the smart personalised healthcare industry.

To discover distinct immune responses promoting or inhibiting hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), we perform a three-dimensional analysis of the immune cells, correlating immune cell types, interactions, and changes over time in an animal model displaying gender disparity in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)-associated HCC. In response to a Western diet (WD), animals mount acute and chronic patterns of inflammatory cytokines, respectively. Tumor progression in males and females is associated with a predominant CD8+ > CD4+, Th1 > Th17 > Th2, NKT > NK, M1 > M2 pattern in the liver. A complete rescue of females from HCC is associated with an equilibrium Th1 = Th17 = Th2, NKT = NK, M1 = M2 pattern, while a partial rescue of males from HCC is associated with an equilibrium CD8+ = CD4+, NKT = NK and a semi-equilibrium Th1 = Th17 > Th2 but a sustained M1 > M2 pattern in the liver. Our data suggest that immunological pattern-recognition can explain immunobiology of HCC and guide immune modulatory interventions for the treatment of HCC in a gender-specific manner.

RESULTS: Increased free oxygen radical transference values depicting free radical generation is enhanced in these patients along with a reduced antioxidant defense, as seen by decreased free oxygen radical defense values. Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids for a period of six months significantly reduced the inflammatory marker homocysteine in all patients, whereas high sensitive C reactive protein was significantly reduced only in females of the age group 11-16years. Simultaneously a significant reduction in oxidative stress parameters with a concomitant increase of antioxidant defense was observed in all patients. CONCLUSION: The authors' findings suggest the regulatory effects of omega-3 fatty acids as cellular activators in alleviating the complications due to sickle cell disease. Omega-3 fatty acids hold promise as future therapeutic candidates in patients with sickle cell disease.

PURPOSE: Estimating the prevalence and severity of asthma symptoms with standardized methods of population-based surveys is a critical step in reducing asthma burden. However, no sufficient surveys have been conducted in most countries of the Middle East especially at the national level. In this survey, we applied sound measures to estimate the prevalence and severity of asthma symptoms and related risk factors in adults in Saudi Arabia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this national cross-sectional study, the prevalence and severity of asthma symptoms were estimated throughout the country. Overall, 7955 adult individuals were selected from 20 regions across Saudi Arabia through their children at schools using a multistage, stratified cluster-sampling technique. A validated questionnaire, including the core and environmental questions of the Global Asthma Network questionnaires, was applied from March 4 to April 25, 2019. In addition, multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the independent relationships between current wheeze and related risk factors. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of current wheeze (wheeze during the past 12 months) was 14.2%. Among persons with current wheeze, 38.1% were affected by severe asthma symptoms. Although a high percentage of those who had experienced asthma-ever reported that their asthma was diagnosed by doctors (83.3%), only 38.4% had a written plan for controlling their asthma. Women were more likely to develop current wheeze (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.4; 95% CI: 1.1-1.7), while other statistically significant factors associated with current wheeze were jobs (aOR 11.8; 95% CI: 7.3-18.9), current exposure to moisture or damp spots (aOR 2.2; 95% CI: 1.5-3.4), heating the house when it is cold (aOR 1.7; 95% CI: 1.3-2.1), and ever using tobacco daily (aOR 2.7; 95% CI: 2.0-3.5). CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide enough evidence for health authorities in Saudi Arabia about the prevalence and severity of asthma symptoms, asthma control, and associated risk factors to scale up monitoring projects, control plans, and high-impact interventions.

Emerging technologies such as digital twins, blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) play a vital role in driving the industrial revolution in all domains, including the healthcare sector. As a result of COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, there is a significant need for medical cyber-physical systems to adopt these emerging technologies to combat COVID-19 paramedic crisis. Also, acquiring secure real-time data exchange and analysis across multiple participants is essential to support the efforts against COVID-19. Therefore, we have introduced a blockchain-based collaborative digital twins framework for decentralized epidemic alerting to combat COVID-19 and any future pandemics. The framework has been proposed to bring together the existing advanced technologies (i.e., blockchain, digital twins, and AI) and then provide a solution to decentralize epidemic alerting to combat COVID-19 outbreaks. Also, we have described how the conceptual framework can be applied in the decentralized COVID-19 pandemic alerting use case.

Background: Asthma disease is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood. Studies assessing asthma prevalence in Saudi Arabia have been variable and not recently updated. Objectives: We sought to assess asthma prevalence, severity, and related risk factors among children and adolescents in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A national, cross-sectional design was used following the Global Asthma Network phase I design. A total of 3817 children aged 6 to 7 years and 4138 adolescents aged 13 to 14 years were recruited from 137 primary and 140 intermediate schools across 20 regions by using a multistage stratified cluster sampling technique. Standardized written questionnaires were answered by the adolescents and by the parents or guardians of the children. The adolescents also answered a video-based questionnaire. Results: Overall, the prevalences of current wheeze were 10.4% and 13.3% and the prevalences of asthma ever were 13.8% and 15.7%, % in children and adolescents, respectively. Of all the children and adolescents, 5.2% and 5.6% had symptoms of severe asthma, respectively. Among those who reported asthma, 86.0% of the children and 74.8% of the adolescents had their asthma confirmed by a doctor, and 53.0% and 32.4%, respectively, were provided with a written plan to control their asthma. The main risk factors associated with current wheeze included antibiotic use in the first year of life, a history of being diagnosed with pneumonia in children, paracetamol use, and having a cat at home during the past 12 months in adolescents. Conclusions: The prevalence of asthma in children and adolescents in Saudi Arabia is within the average international range and is at a plateau phase.
