BACKGROUND: Exercise is known to provide multiple metabolic benefits such as improved insulin sensitivity and glucose control in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and those at risk. Beyond the traditional exercise dose, exercise timing is perceived as a contemporary hot topic, especially in the field of T2DM; however, the number of intervention studies assessing exercise timing and glucose metabolism is scarce. Our aim is to test the effect of exercise timing (i.e., morning, afternoon, or evening) on the inter-individual response variability in glycemic control and related metabolic health parameters in individuals with T2DM and those at risk during a 12-week intervention. METHODS: A randomized crossover exercise intervention will be conducted involving two groups: group 1, individuals with T2DM; group 2, age-matched older adults with overweight/obesity. The intervention will consist of three 2-week blocks of supervised post-prandial exercise using high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Between each training block, a 2-week washout period, where participants avoid structured exercise, will take place. Assessments will be conducted in both groups before and after each exercise block. The primary outcomes include the 24-h area under the curve continuous glucose monitoring-based glucose. The secondary outcomes include body composition, resting energy expenditure, insulin response to a meal tolerance test, maximal aerobic capacity, peak power output, physical activity, sleep quality, and insulin and glucose levels. All primary and secondary outcomes will be measured at each assessment point. DISCUSSION: Outcomes from this trial will provide us additional insight into the role of exercise timing on the inter-individual response variability in glycemic control and other related metabolic parameters in two distinct populations, thus contributing to the development of more effective exercise prescription guidelines for individuals with T2DM and those at risk. This investigation aimed to determine the effects of 24 weeks of resistance training (RT) on cardiac function in older women. Seventy-three physically independent older women were selected for this investigation. Participants were randomized into a training group (TG, n = 38) and a control group (CG, n = 35). The RT program was conducted over 24 weeks and consisted of three sessions a week. Participants performed eight exercises for the whole body in three sets of 8-12 repetitions. Tissue Doppler echocardiography was performed, according to current guidelines, before and after 24 weeks of the intervention. One-repetition maximum (1-RM) tests were used to assess muscular strength. A group vs. time interaction (P < 0.05) was shown for left ventricular end-diastolic volume (TG = - 8.3% vs. CG = - 0.6%), left ventricular end-systolic volume (TG = - 10.6% vs. CG = + 1.1%), and left atrial volume index (TG = - 9.1% vs. CG = + 3.9%). A main time effect (P < 0.05) was found for left ventricular mass index (TG = + 4.9% vs. CG = - 0.6%), septal thickness (TG = + 3.3% vs. CG = - 1.7%), left ventricular ejection fraction (TG = + 3.7% vs. CG = - 0.5%), E'/E septal (TG = - 4.8% vs. CG = + 0.5%), deceleration time (TG = - 4.1% vs. CG = + 3.9%), E septal (TG = + 4.6% vs. CG = - 0.6%), and E lateral (TG = + 5.2% vs. CG = - 1.1%). These results suggest that 24 weeks of RT improves cardiac morphological and functional variables in older women.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Athletes are commonly exposed to exercise-induced dehydration. However, the best method to detect dehydration under this circumstance is not clear. This study aimed to analyze pre- and post-dehydration measurements of biomarkers, including saliva osmolality (SOsm), urine osmolality (UOsm), urine-specific gravity (USG), urine color (Ucolor), serum osmolality (SeOsm), serum arginine vasopressin (AVP), serum sodium (Na+), and thirst sensation in underhydrated athletes, using the body mass loss (BML) as the reference method. METHODS: In this clinical trial (NCT05380089), a total of 38 athletes (17 females) with a regular low water intake (<35 mL/kg/day) were submitted to exercise-induced dehydration with a heat index of 29.8 ± 3.1 °C and an individualized running intensity (80-90% of first ventilatory threshold). RESULTS: ROC curve analysis revealed significant discriminative abilities of SOsm, with AUC values of 0.76 at 1.5% BML, 0.75 at 1.75% BML, and 0.87 at 2% BML, while Na+ and SeOsm showed the highest AUC of 0.87 and 0.91 at 2% BML, respectively. SOsm showed high sensitivity at 1.5% of BML, while SeOsm and Na+ demonstrated high sensitivity at 2% of BML. CONCLUSION: This study highlights SOsm as a potential indicator of hydration status across different levels of BML. Additionally, Na+ and SeOsm emerged as accurate dehydration predictors at 1.75% and 2% of BML. Notably, the accuracy of urinary indices and thirst sensation for detecting hydration may be limited.

The present study aimed to assess the utility of a less laborious technique for estimating total body protein (TBPro) in young athletes, using a multicomponent model as the criterion method. A total of 88 (49 boys and 39 girls) adolescent athletes (age: 15.2 ± 1.5 years; body mass index: 21.2 ± 2.7 kg/m2) participated. A 6-compartment model was used as the reference method (TBProReference) involving air displacement plethysmography for body volume, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) for bone mineral content, and deuterium dilution for total body water (TBW). Alternatively, DXA TBPro models were used as TBPro = lean-soft mass (LSM) - HFFFM × fat-free mass (FFM) - Ms. - G, where LSM and FFM were assessed using DXA, HFFFM is the hydration fraction of the FFM using measured TBW or assumed TBW (adult fraction of 0.732; Lohman's constants or mean observed HFFFM), Ms. is soft tissue minerals (Ms = 0.0129 × HFFFM × FFM), and G is glycogen calculated as 0.044 × (LSM - HFFFM × FFM - Ms). The maturation level was determined by self-assessment. TBPro obtained from DXA using the assumed HFFFM explained 73% to 77% of the variance compared to TBProReference. Meanwhile, using the mean values of measured HFFFM, the DXA model explained 53 and 36% for boys and girls, respectively. Larger bias (8.6% for boys and 25.8% for girls) and limits of agreement were found for the DXA model using measured HFFFM (boys for 66.9% and girls for 70%) compared to an assumed HFFFM (bias ranged from 1.5% to 22.5% and limits of agreement ranged from 31.3% to 35.3%). Less complex and demanding TBPro DXA models with the assumed HFFFM are valid alternatives for assessing this relevant FFM component in groups of adolescent athletes but are less accurate for individual results. Though future studies should be conducted to test the usefulness of these models in longitudinal and experimental designs, their potential to provide an estimation of protein mass after exercise and diet interventions in young athletes is anticipated.

The effects of acute dehydration on neuromuscular function have been studied. However, whether the mechanisms underpinning such function are central or peripheral is still being determined, and the results are inconsistent. This systematic review aims to elucidate the influence of acute dehydration on neuromuscular function, including a novel aspect of investigating the central and peripheral neuromuscular mechanisms. Three databases were used for the article search: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. Studies were included if they had objective measurements of dehydration, muscle performance, and electromyography data or transcranial magnetic stimulation or peripheral nerve stimulation measurements with healthy individuals aged 18-65 years. Twenty-three articles met the eligibility criteria. The studies exhibited considerable heterogeneity in the methods used to induce and quantify dehydration. Despite being inconsistent, the literature shows some evidence that acute dehydration does not affect maximal strength during isometric or moderate-speed isokinetic contractions. Conversely, acute dehydration significantly reduces maximal strength during slow-speed isokinetic contractions and fatigue resistance in response to endurance tasks. The studies report that dehydration does not affect the motor cortical output or spinal circuity. The effects occur at the peripheral level within the muscle.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to explore the influence of diet and physical activity (PA) changes on bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD) alterations in adolescents with obesity undergoing a weight loss program. METHODS: Six-month longitudinal data from 71 adolescents (aged 15.1 [± 1.6] years; 57.7% girls) with a BMI z-score of 3.03 (± 0.78), previously recruited for the PAC-MAnO trial, were analyzed using Generalized Estimation Equations for over time changes and linear regressions with BMC, BMD and BMD z-score as dependent variables, adjusting for confounders (including type of exercise- aerobic vs. combined). RESULTS: Adjusting for confounders, changes in carbohydrate (CH) and protein content showed to positively and negatively predict BMD z-score variance, respectively (ß = 0.44, 95%CI: 0.01, 0.04, p < .001); ß = -0.57, 95%CI: -0.06, -0.03, p < .001), yet no associations were found between PA and bone-related parameters. Combined exercise showed better results on BMC compared to aerobic exercise (ß = 0.09, 95%CI: 0.05 to 0.13, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Increased CH content, instead of protein, may be associated with BMD improvements in adolescents with obesity. Type of exercise may moderate the impact of PA on bone health. OBJECTIVE: Cross-sectional evidence has demonstrated that parallel reactance obtained by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) may be an alternative to the regularly used series of measurements to predict intracellular water (ICW) in athletes. However, we are not aware of any studies that have determined the predictive role or compared the effectiveness of both series and parallel reactance for tracking ICW changes during an athletic season. The main aim of this study was to determine the predictive role and compare both series and parallel reactance (Xc) in tracking ICW during an athletic season. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: This longitudinal study analyzed 108 athletes in the preparatory and competitive periods. Using dilution techniques, total body water (TBW) and extracellular water (ECW) were determined and ICW was calculated. Resistance (R), Xc, and impedance (Z) standardized for height were obtained through BIA spectroscopy using a frequency of 50kHz in a series array and then mathematically transformed in a parallel array. RESULTS: Multiple regression analyses showed that only changes in parallel Xc and capacitance (CAP) (P < 0.05) were predictors of delta ICW during the sports season. In contracts, this was not the case for Xcs. Both changes in R and Z, series and parallel, predicted similarly the changes in ECW and TBW (P < 0.05) in athletes. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the potential of parallel BIA values to detect changes in body water compartments over a competitive season. These data provide preliminary evidence that changes in parallel Xc/H, and ultimately CAP, represent valid markers of alterations in cell volume during a sports season.

BACKGROUND: Providing individual- and population-level data on children's physical fitness (PF) is a crucial public health and education priority. However, few national fitness monitoring or surveillance systems are currently in practice internationally. We aim to summarize the current European PF monitoring and surveillance systems for school-aged children and to provide experience-based guidelines on how to design such systems. METHODS: The FitBack network consists of experts from diverse backgrounds with the common interest to improve the accessibility of PF monitoring for young people globally. Through FitBack network, we identified and compared the national or regional PF monitoring and surveillance systems currently in operation across Europe. We formulated a 10-step approach for designing and establishing one's own system, based on analysis of experienced strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to monitoring childhood fitness. RESULTS: We identified a total of eight PF monitoring systems in Finland, France, Galicia of Spain, Hungary, Lithuania, Portugal, Serbia, and Slovenia. The FitBack network recommends the following steps for designing and establishing one's own system: (1) set up mission statements and aims, (2) involve stakeholders, (3) utilize scientific background, (4) governance structure, (5) ensure sufficient funding, (6) data management planning, (7) provide meaningful feedback, (8) conduct pilot testing, (9) plan implementation process, and (10) invest in communication with stakeholders. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides an updated overview of the best practices for school-aged children's fitness monitoring and surveillance in Europe. Additionally, it offers a 10-step approach to assist in the creation of similar systems in Europe or globally.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the health importance of identifying correlates of physical fitness in youth, no investigation to date has explored the influence of behavioral, health-related, and contextual correlates simultaneously. We investigated the hierarchical relationship of multiple modifiable correlates favoring or diminishing cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness in youth. DESIGN: Cross-sectional investigation. METHODS: In a sample of 5174 children and adolescents, 31 correlates were hierarchized according to their impact on cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness assessed using the FITESCOLA® fitness battery. A Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detection approach was employed and measures of correlation and association were used to investigate the relationship between physical fitness and correlates. RESULTS: In children, body mass index was the most relevant factor to discriminate between high and low cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness of the upper, middle, and lower body. While body mass index was more important than any other correlate to differentiate levels of upper and lower body muscular fitness during adolescence, specific characteristics of sports participation emerged as key factors to discriminate between high and low cardiorespiratory fitness and middle body muscular fitness. Other correlates, including the self-report of active recess time, active commuting to school, favorable neighborhood conditions, and limited time on screens and cellphones, were demonstrative of favorable physical fitness levels. CONCLUSIONS: Both body composition and sports-related characteristics emerged as the two most relevant factors of physical fitness in youth. Additional health benefits may be obtained from building supportive environments for sports and healthy exercise habits within the household and at different school education levels.

Excess fat on the body impacts obesity-related co-morbidity risk; however, the location of fat stores affects the severity of these risks. The purpose of this study was to examine segmental fat accumulation patterns by sex and ethnicity using international datasets. An amalgamated and cross-calibrated dataset of dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-measured variables compiled segmental mass for bone mineral content (BMC), lean mass (LM), and fat mass (FM) for each participant; percentage of segment fat (PSF) was calculated as PSFsegment = (FMsegment/(BMCsegment + LMsegment + FMsegment)) × 100. A total of 30 587 adults (N = 16 490 females) from 13 datasets were included. A regression model was used to examine differences in regional fat mass and PSF. All populations followed the same segmental fat mass accumulation in the ascending order with statistical significance (arms < legs < trunk), except for Hispanic/Latinx males (arms < [legs = trunk]). Relative fat accumulation patterns differed between those with greater PSF in the appendages (Arab, Mexican, Asian, Black, American Caucasian, European Caucasian, and Australasian Caucasian females; Black males) and those with greater PSF in the trunk (Mexican, Asian, American Caucasian, European Caucasian, and Australasian Caucasian males). Greater absolute and relative fat accumulation in the trunk could place males of most ethnicities in this study at a higher risk of visceral fat deposition and associated co-morbidities.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: It is not yet known whether regional bioelectrical impedance (BIA) phase angle (PhA) may be informative of different types of strength performed by the lower and upper limbs, independently of lean soft tissue mass (LSTM). Using a sample of healthy adults, we aimed to examine the association and relevance of regional PhA relative to isometric and isokinetic strength of each limb. METHODS: A total of 57 participants (32.7 ± 12.9 years; 24.7 ± 3.5 kg/m2) were included in the present investigation. Regional raw BIA variables were determined using a phase-sensitive BIA device. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to evaluate LSTM. Absolute isometric and isokinetic (i.e., 60°/s and 180°/s) strength of each limb (extension and flexion) was assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer and used to calculate relative strength. RESULTS: In absolute strength, only dominant leg PhA was associated with isometric extension strength (ß = 0.283) and isokinetic 180°/s flexion strength (ß = 0.354), regardless of LSTM (p < 0.05). In relative strength, a significant association of regional PhA was found for dominant arm flexion isometric strength (ß = 0.336), and non-dominant arm and dominant leg extension isometric strength (ß = 0.377, ß = 0.565, respectively; p < 0.05), independently of LSTM. Similarly, for isokinetic 180°/s strength, regional PhA significantly explained the variance in the relative strength of both arms and dominant leg (ß = 0.350 to 0.506), regardless of LSTM (p < 0.05). Relative isokinetic 60°/s strength was not consistently associated with regional PhA (p ≥ 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Regional PhA significantly explained relative (isometric and 180°/s isokinetic strength of both arms and dominant leg), but not absolute muscle strength, independently of regional LSTM. Thus, after accounting for body size, regional PhA seems to have its own characteristics that explain relative strength independently of LSTM.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Accurate assessments of energy intake (EI) are needed in lifestyle interventions to guarantee a negative energy balance (EB), thereby losing weight. This study aimed (1) to compare objectively measured and self-reported EI and (2) to determine the predictors of underreporting divided by sex, adiposity and BMI category. METHODS: Seventy-three participants [mean (SD): 43.7 (9.2) years, BMI = 31.5 (4.5) kg/m2, 37% females] of the Champ4Life intervention were included in this study. EI was measured using the "intake-balance method" and self-reported through 3-day food records. Fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Bland-Altman analysis was performed to compare both EI assessments. RESULTS: Self-reported EI was lower than measured EI during both neutral (-355 kcal/d) and negative EB (-570 kal/day). While no significant trends were observed for EI evaluation in either neutral (p = 0.315) or negative EB (p = 0.611), limits of agreement were wide (-1720 to 1010 and -1920 to 779 kcal/day, respectively). In females, the degree of misreporting (kcal/day and %) was predicted by weight (p = 0.032 and p = 0.039, respectively) and FM (p = 0.029 and p = 0.037, respectively). In males, only BMI (p = 0.036) was a predictor of misreporting (kcal/day). CONCLUSION: Self-reported EI did not agree with measured EI. Our results show that larger body size was associated with higher levels of underestimation for EI (females only). Nevertheless, misreporting EI is a complex issue involving more associations than merely body composition. A deeper understanding could inform counseling for participants filling out food records in other to reduce misreporting and improve validity.

INTRODUCTION: Behavioral compensations may occur as a response to a negative energy balance. The aim of this study was to explore the associations between changes in energy intake (EI) and changes in physical activity (PA, min/day; kcal/d) as a response to a weight loss (WL) intervention and to understand if interindividual differences occur in EI and energy expenditure (EE). METHODS: Eighty-one participants [mean (SD): age = 42.8 (9.4)y, BMI = 31.2 (4.4)kg/m2, 37% females] divided in intervention (IG, n = 43) and control group (CG, n = 38) were included. The IG underwent a moderate energy restriction (300-500 kcal/d). EI was measured through the intake-balance method. Non-exercise PA (NEPA) and exercise (through logbook) were assessed by accelerometery. The EE in NEPA (NEAT) and in exercise (EiEE) was calculated by applying the Freedson Combination'98 algorithm over the time spent in these activities. Pearson correlations were performed in IG to examine associations between EE components, EI and body composition. To understand if interindividual differences were observed, the SD of individual response (SDIR) and the smallest worthwhile change (SWC, SDbaselineCG×0.2) were calculated. RESULTS: Changes in EI [Δ EI, (kcal/d)] was negatively associated with Δ exercise (min/d:r = -0.413, p = 0.045; %:r = -0.846, p = 0.008) and with Δ EiEE (kcal/d:r = -0.488, p = 0.016; %:r = -0.859, p = 0.006). A negative correlation was found between Δ sedentary time and Δ NEPA (min/d:r = -0.622, p = 0.002; %:r = -0.487, p = 0.018). An interindividual variability was found for EI(SDIR = 151.6, SWC = 72.3) and EE (SDIR = 165, SWC = 134). CONCLUSIONS: Decreases in EI were not associated to compensatory responses such as decreases in PA and/or increases in sedentary time. Interindividual variability was found for EI and EE. Nevertheless, behavioral compensations and the interindividual variability should be considered when implementing WL interventions, to increase the likelihood of achieving sustainable results. BACKGROUND: Adaptive thermogenesis, defined as the decrease in the energy expenditure components beyond what can be predicted by changes in body mass stores, has been studied as a possible barrier to weight loss and weight maintenance. Intermittent energy restriction (IER), using energy balance refeeds, has been pointed out as a viable strategy to reduce adaptive thermogenesis and improve weight loss efficiency (greater weight loss per unit of energy deficit), as an alternative to a continuous energy restriction (CER). Following a randomized clinical trial design, the BREAK Study aims to compare the effects of IER versus CER on body composition and in adaptive thermogenesis, and understand whether participants will successfully maintain their weight loss after 12 months. METHODS: Seventy-four women with obesity and inactive (20-45 y) will be randomized to 16 weeks of CER or IER (8x2 weeks of energy restriction interspersed with 7x1 week in energy balance). Both groups will start with 2 weeks in energy balance before energy restriction, followed by 16 weeks in energy restriction, then 8 weeks in energy balance and finally a 12-month weight maintenance phase. Primary outcomes are changes in fat-mass and adaptive thermogenesis after weight loss and weight maintenance. Secondary outcomes include weight loss, fat-free mass preservation, alterations in energy expenditure components, and changes in hormones (thyroid function, insulin, leptin, and cortisol). DISCUSSION: We anticipate that The BREAK Study will allow us to better understand adaptive thermogenesis during weight loss and weight maintenance, in women with obesity. OBJECTIVES: Maintaining a healthy aging process is vital to combating and delaying the adverse health outcomes faced by the growing older adult population, where a key aspect to achieving healthy aging is the preservation of functional fitness. This study aims to present trends on the functional fitness of Portuguese older adults between 2008 and 2018 and build new normative reference standards for the Senior Fitness Battery Tests. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Functional fitness was measured with the Senior Fitness Battery Tests in two national representative cohorts of the Portuguese older adult population (≥65 years) using the 2008 (n = 4712) and 2018 (n = 2717) surveys. Changes were assessed according to sex and age group. Sex and age-group normative fitness scores were developed. RESULTS: Overall findings suggested that older adults' point prevalence for arm-curl, 8-ft up-and-go, and 30-s chair sit-to-stand remained stable between 2008 and 2018, with declining trends being observed for the 6-min walk and back-scratch tests. However, results for trends varied when stratified by sex and age categories. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest a trend toward a stabilization of most of the functional fitness tests over the past decade, but with a critical decline in the 6-min walk test. Thus, this test should be targeted by future health-care policies. Moreover, this investigation provides new and updated normative reference standards for the Senior Fitness Battery Tests that should be used as a tool to promote a healthy aging process among Portuguese older adults.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity in childhood is thought to influences health and development. Previous studies have found that boys are typically more active than girls, yet the focus has largely been on differences in average levels or proportions above a threshold rather than the full distribution of activity across all intensities. We thus examined differences in the distribution of physical activity between girls and boys in a multi-national sample of children. METHODS: We used the harmonised International Children Accelerometry Database (ICAD), including waist-worn accelerometry data from 15,461 individuals (Boys: 48.3%) from 9 countries. Employing Generalised Additive Models of Location, Shape, and Scale (GAMLSS) we investigated gender differences in the distribution of individuals, including comparisons of variability (SD) and average physical activity levels (mean and median) and skewness. We conducted this analysis for each activity intensity (Sedentary, Light, and Moderate-to-Vigorous (MVPA)) and a summary measure (counts per minute (CPM)). RESULTS: Sizable gender differences in the distribution of activity were found for moderate to vigorous activity and counts per minute, with boys having higher average levels (38% higher mean volumes of MVPA, 20% higher CPM), yet substantially more between-person variability (30% higher standard deviation (SD) for MVPA, 17% higher SD for CPM); boys' distributions were less positively skewed than girls. Conversely, there was little to no difference between girls and boys in the distribution of sedentary or light-intensity activity. CONCLUSIONS: Inequality in activity between girls and boys was driven by MVPA. The higher mean volumes of MVPA in boys occurred alongside greater variability. This suggests a need to consider the underlying distribution of activity in future research; for example, interventions which target gender inequality in MVPA may inadvertently lead to increased inequality within girls.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to analyze the effects of different exercise protocols on physical fitness (cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, and body composition), quality of life, cancer-related fatigue, and sleep quality in patients with different types of cancer undergoing neoadjuvant treatment. DESIGN: Systematic review. METHOD: A comprehensive search of existing literature was carried out using four electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library (published until October 19, 2022). All databases were searched for randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental investigations, and pre-post investigations assessing the effects of exercise in cancer patients during neoadjuvant treatment. Excluded articles included multicomponent interventions, such as exercise plus diet or behavioral therapy, and investigations performed during adjuvant treatment or survivorship. The methodological quality of each study was assessed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale. RESULTS: Twenty-seven trials involving 999 cancer patients were included in this review. The interventions were conducted in cancer patients undergoing neoadjuvant treatment for rectal (n = 11), breast (n = 5), pancreatic (n = 4), esophageal (n = 3), gastro-esophageal (n = 2), and prostate (n = 1) cancers, and leukemia (n = 1). Among the investigations included, 14 utilized combined exercise protocols, 11 utilized aerobic exercise, and two utilized both aerobic and resistance training separately. Exercise interventions appeared to improve cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, body composition, and quality of life, although many investigations lacked a between-group analysis. CONCLUSION: Despite limited evidence, exercise interventions applied during neoadjuvant treatment demonstrate promising potential in enhancing cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, body composition, and overall quality of life. However, a scarcity of evidence remains on the effects of exercise on cancer-related fatigue and sleep quality. Further research with high-quality randomized controlled trials is warranted.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the predictive role of series and parallel bioelectrical impedance-derived parameters in predicting total body (TBW), intracellular (ICW), and extracellular water (ECW) in athletes. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed 134 male (21.33 ± 5.11 years) and 64 female (20.45 ± 5.46 years) athletes. Using dilution techniques, TBW and ECW were determined while ICW was the difference between both. Raw and standardized for height (/H) bioelectrical resistance (R), reactance (Xc), and impedance (Z) values were obtained using a phase-sensitive device at a single frequency in a series array (s). These were mathematically transformed in a parallel array (p) and capacitance (CAP). Fat-free mass (FFM) was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS: Multiple regressions adjusted for age and FFM show that R/Hs, Z/Hs, R/Hp, and Z/Hp were significant predictors of TBW (p < 0.001 in females and males). While Xc/Hs did not predict ICW, Xc/Hp was a predictor (p < 0.001 in females and Males). In females, R/H and Z/H predicted similarly TBW, ICW, and ECW. In males, R/Hs was considered a better predictor than R/Hp for TBW and ICW, and the Xc/Hp was considered the best predictor for ICW. Another significant predictor of ICW was CAP (p < 0.001 in females and males). CONCLUSION: This study highlights the potential value of parallel bioelectrical impedance values to identify fluid compartments in athletes as an alternative to the regularly used series measurements. Moreover, this study supports Xc in parallel, and ultimately CAP, as valid indicators of cell volume.
