Although knowledge of the functions of the gut microbiome has increased greatly over the past few decades, our understanding of the mechanisms governing its ecology and evolution remains obscure. While host genetic distance is a strong predictor of the gut microbiome in large-scale studies and captive settings, its influence has not always been evident at finer taxonomic scales, especially when considering among the recently diverged animals in natural settings. Comparing the gut microbiome of 19 populations of Japanese macaques Macaca fuscata across the Japanese archipelago, we assessed the relative roles of host genetic distance, geographic distance and dietary factors in influencing the macaque gut microbiome. Our results suggested that the macaques may maintain a core gut microbiome, while each population may have acquired some microbes from its specific habitat/diet. Diet-related factors such as season, forest, and reliance on anthropogenic foods played a stronger role in shaping the macaque gut microbiome. Among closely related mammalian hosts, host genetics may have limited effects on the gut microbiome since the hosts generally have smaller physiological differences. This study contributes to our understanding of the relative roles of host phylogeography and dietary factors in shaping the gut microbiome of closely related mammalian hosts.

Raspberry bushy dwarf virus (RBDV) is transmitted through seed in infected red raspberry plants after pollination with pollen grains from healthy red raspberry plants. Here, we show that RBDV is not transmitted through seeds in infected Nicotiana benthamiana (Nb) plants after pollination with virus-free Nb pollen grains. Chromogenic in situ hybridization revealed that the virus invades the shoot apical meristem and the ovule, including the embryo sac, of RBDV-infected Nb plants; however, in seeds that developed from infected embryo sacs after fertilization by virus-free sperm cells, RBDV was absent in the embryos and present in the endosperms. When we analyzed seed transmission of RBDV in Nb mutants with mutations in dicer-like enzyme 2 and 4 (NbDCL2&4) or RNA-dependent RNA polymerase 6 (NbRDR6), RBDV was not present in the offspring from seeds with embryos and endosperms that did not express NbDCL2&4 or NbRDR6. These results suggest that seed transmission of RBDV is prevented by evasion of infection by the embryo and that RNA silencing is not essential for preventing seed transmission of RBDV in Nb plants.

Background: Veno-Venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VV-ECMO) is one effective treatment for COVID-19 pneumonia, but controversy regarding VV-ECMO management in obese patients still exists. In this report, we described a case in which two oxygenators were used in parallel in a severely obese patient (Body mass index: 60 kg/m2, body surface area: 2.8 m2).Case: The case was of a 27-year-old man diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia and admitted to our hospital. VV-ECMO was required on the fifth day after admission due to gradually worsening respiratory conditions and partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2)/FiO2 ratio of 77. Immediately after the initiation of VV-ECMO, post-oxygenator in circuit, PaO2 was low at 134 mmHg. Even though the VV-ECMO circuit was replaced on the same day, the PaO2 still was low at 261 mmHg. Thus, we decided to use two oxygenators in parallel, after which the PaO2 stabilized at 400-500 mmHg.Conclusions: In this case, VV-ECMO oxygenation could be stabilized by utilizing two oxygenators in parallel. Using two membrane oxygenators may be a treatment option in severely obese patients with respiratory failure.

RESUMEN

Several dozens of small trematodes were found in the small intestine of a Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, that was captured in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The trematode was identified as Ogmocotyle ailuri. This is the first case of a Japanese monkey infected with Ogmocotyle trematodes, and a new host record for O. ailuri.
