RESUMEN
Introduction: Hyperarousal has been a significant pathophysiological theory related to insomnia disorder (ID), characterized by excessive cortical activation and abnormal electroencephalogram (EEG) power during daytime or sleep. However, there is currently insufficient attention to the EEG power during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and different stages of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Additionally, whether the abnormal sleep EEG power in ID patients can be restored by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) remains unclear. Methods>: Data of 26 ID patients and 26 healthy controls (HCs) were included in the current observational study. The comparisons of relative power between patients and HCs at baseline in each band of each sleep stage and the changes in patients before and after rTMS treatment were performed. The correlations between relative power and behavioral measures of the patients were also investigated. Results: Abnormalities in sleep EEG relative power in the delta, beta and gamma bands of the patients were observed in NREM2, NREM3 and REM sleep. Correlations were identified between relative power and behavioral measures in ID group, primarily encompassing sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency and depression scores. Post-treatment improvements in relative power of the delta and beta band were observed in NREM2 sleep. Discussion: The relative power of sleep EEG exhibited a significant correlation with sleep measures in ID patients, and demonstrated notable differences from HCs across the delta, beta, and gamma frequency bands. Furthermore, our findings suggest that rTMS treatment may partially ameliorate relative power abnormalities in patients with ID.

Background: Enteral nutrition administered via the nasointestinal tube (NET) is a prevalent nutritional modality among critically ill patients, and abdominal radiographs hold significant value in accurately ascertaining the precise positioning of the NET subsequent to its placement. Therefore, we propose an innovative approach to construct a clinical prediction model based on NET's configuration within the gastrointestinal tract in abdominal radiography. This model aims to enhance the accuracy of determining the position of NETs after their placement. Methods: Patients admitted to the intensive care unit of Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital between October 2017 and October 2021 were included to constitute the training cohort for retrospective analysis, and nomogram was constructed. Consecutively enrolled patients admitted to the same hospital from October 2021 to October 2023 were included as the validation cohort. The training cohort underwent a univariate analysis initially, followed by a multivariate logistic regression approach to analyze and identify the most appropriate model. Subsequently, nomogram was generated along with receiver operator characteristic curves, calibration curves, and decision curves for both the training and validation cohorts to evaluate the predictive performance of the model. Results: The training and validation cohorts comprised 574 and 249 patients, respectively, with successful tube placement observed in 60.1 % and 76.3 % of patients, correspondingly. The predictors incorporated in the prediction maps encompass the "C-shape," the height of "inverse C-shape," showing the duodenojejunal flexure, and the location of the head end of the NET. The model demonstrated excellent predictive efficacy, achieving an AUC of 0.883 (95 % CI 0.855-0.911) and good calibration. Furthermore, when applied to the validation cohort, the nomogram exhibited strong discrimination with an AUC of 0.815 (95 % CI 0.750-0.880) and good calibration. Conclusion: The combination of abdominal radiography and NET's configuration within the gastrointestinal tract enables accurate determination of NET placement in critically ill patients.
RESUMEN
Activation of the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) by bacterial endotoxins in macrophages plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of sepsis. However, the mechanism underlying TLR4 activation in macrophages is still not fully understood. Here, we reveal that upon lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation, lysine acetyltransferase CBP is recruited to the TLR4 signalosome complex leading to increased acetylation of the TIR domains of the TLR4 signalosome. Acetylation of the TLR4 signalosome TIR domains significantly enhances signaling activation via NF-κB rather than IRF3 pathways. Induction of NF-κB signaling is responsible for gene expression changes leading to M1 macrophage polarization. In sepsis patients, significantly elevated TLR4-TIR acetylation is observed in CD16+ monocytes combined with elevated expression of M1 macrophage markers. Pharmacological inhibition of HDAC1, which deacetylates the TIR domains, or CBP play opposite roles in sepsis. Our findings highlight the important role of TLR4-TIR domain acetylation in the regulation of the immune responses in sepsis, and we propose this reversible acetylation of TLR4 signalosomes as a potential therapeutic target for M1 macrophages during the progression of sepsis.
RESUMEN
Based on the basic idea of expanding the interlayer spacing of MXene, utilizing the effect of gallic acid-modified cellulose nanofibers for rapid moisture separation, the flexible sensing and driving composite film with a perfect balance among humidity signal response and mechanical properties was prepared. Inspired by the stacking of autumn fallen leaves, the cellulose nanofibers-based composite films were formed by self-assembly under vacuum filtration of blending gallic acid-modified cellulose nanofibers with MXene. The enhanced mechanical properties (tensile strength 131.1 MPa, puncture load 0.88 N, tearing strength 165.55 N/mm, and elongation at break 16.14 %), humidity sensing (the stable induced voltage 63.7 mV and response/recovery time 3.2/5.1 s), and humidity driving (154.7° bending angle) properties were observed. The synergistic effect of hydrogen bonds, the "pinning effect" arising from the side chains, and the hierarchical layered microstructure contributed to the enhanced performance. This work exemplifies the application of green natural product for preparing intelligent sensing, wearable devices, and biomimetic robots.

BACKGROUND: Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) are highly susceptible to malnutrition, and while enteral nutrition via nasogastric tube is the preferred method, there is a risk of inadvertent reflux and aspiration. Therefore, clinicians have turned to nasointestinal tubes (NET) for enteral nutrition as an alternative option. But the precise localization of NET presents an ongoing challenge. We proposed an innovative approach to provide a valuable reference for clinicians involved in NET placement. METHOD: Data were obtained retrospectively from the medical records of adult patients with a high risk of aspiration or gastric feeding intolerance who had a NET placed in the ICU of Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital between October 1, 2017, and October 1, 2023. The collected data were subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS and R software. RESULT: There were 494 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The first-pass success rate was 81.4% (n = 402). The success of a patient's initial NET placement was found to be associated with Angle SPC and Distance CP, as determined by univariate analysis (25.6 ± 16.7° vs. 41.9 ± 18.0°, P < 0.001; 40.0 ± 26.2 mm vs. 62.0 ± 31.8 mm, P < 0.001, respectively). By conducting a multivariate regression analysis, we identified a significant association between pyloric types and the success rate of placing NET (OR 29.559, 95%CI 14.084-62.038, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Angle SPC, Distance CP, and the type of pylorus are independently associated with successful initial placement of NET. Besides, patients with the outside type of pylorus (OP-type) exhibit a higher rate of initial placement success.

The weak stiffness, huge thickness, and low specific capacitance of commonly utilized flexible supercapacitors hinder their great electrochemical performance. Learning from a biomimetic interface strategy, we design flexible film electrodes based on functional intercalated structures with excellent electrochemical properties and mechanical flexibility. A composite film with high strength and flexibility is created using graphene (reduced graphene oxide (rGO)) as the plane layer, layered double metal hydroxide (LDH) as the support layer, and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) as the connection agent and flexible agent. The interlayer height can be adjusted by the ion concentration. The highly interconnected network enables excellent electron and ion transport channels, facilitating rapid ion diffusion and redox reactions. Moreover, the high flexibility and mechanical properties of the film achieve multiple folding and bending. The CNF-rGO-NiCoLDH film electrode exhibits high capacitance performance (3620.5 mF cm-2 at 2 mA cm-2), excellent mechanical properties, and high flexibility. Notably, flexible all-solid assembled CNF-rGO-NiCoLDH//rGO has an extremely high area energy density of 53.5 mWh cm-2 at a power density of 1071.2 mW cm-2, along with cycling stability of 89.8% retention after 10â¯000 charge-discharge cycles. This work provides a perspective for designing high-performance energy storage materials for flexible electronics and wearable devices.
RESUMEN
Via rational molecular structure design and using gallic acid (GA) for hydrophobic modification of cellulose nanofibers (CNF), the "polymer dipole" CNF-GA with hydrophilic main chains and hydrophobic side chains was prepared, which improved the poor piezoelectric properties of CNF used for preparing pressure sensors. Due to the appearance of the side chains, the elongation at break of the CNF-GA-2, compared with CNF, was enhanced by 186 %, and the excellent tensile strength, puncture load, and tearing strength were displayed. Moreover, the significant glass transition temperature (Tg) near the human body temperature was exhibited for CNF-GA, making it possible to be applied in temperature sensing. Most importantly, the CNF-GA-2 showed the maximum hydrophobicity, with a contact angle of 76.77°. Finally, the CNF-GA-2/MXene nanocomposite film was prepared by the CNF-GA-2 with MXene through vacuum filtration. The results indicated that the film had excellent piezoelectric properties (d33 = 63.283), the generated stable induced voltage (125.6 mV), the preferable piezoresistive performance (ΔR/R0 = 2.15), the fast response/recovery time (48/61 ms), which could achieve dynamic and static responses. Moreover, this film could be used for real-time detection of limb movements (such as wrists).

Alcohol dehydrogenase 1 (ADH1) is an alcohol-oxidizing enzyme with poorlydefined biology. Here we report that ADH1 is highly expressed in kidneys of mice with lethal endotoxemia and is transcriptionally upregulated in tubular cells by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimuli through TLR4/NF-κB cascade. The Adh1 knockout (Adh1KO) mice with lethal endotoxemia displayed increased susceptibility to acute kidney injury (AKI) but not systemic inflammatory response. Adh1KO mice develop more severe tubular cell apoptosis in comparison to Adh1 wild-type (Adh1WT) mice during course of lethal endotoxemia. ADH1 deficiency facilitates the LPS-induced tubular cell apoptosis in a caspase-dependent manner. Mechanistically, ADH1 deficiency dampens tubular mitophagy that relies on PINK1-Parkin pathway characterized by the reduced membrane potential, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and release of fragmented mtDNA to cytosol. Kidney-specific overexpression of PINK1 and Parkin by adeno-associated viral vector 9 (AAV9) delivery ameliorates AKI exacerbation in Adh1KO mice with lethal endotoxemia. Our study supports the notion that ADH1 is critical for blockade of tubular apoptosis mediated by mitophagy, allowing the rapid identification and targeting of alcohol-metabolic route applicable to septic AKI.

BACKGROUND: The rapid global emergence and spread of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (CR-GNB) is recognized as a major public health concern, and there are currently few effective treatments for CR-GNB infection. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with CR-GNB infections treated with ceftazidime/avibactam (CAZ/AVI) combined with colistin from October 2019 to February 2023 in China. METHODS: A total of 31 patients with CR-GNB infections were retrospectively identified using the electronic medical record system of Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital. RESULTS: Thirty-one patients were treated with CAZ/AVI combined with colistin. Respiratory tract infections (87%) were most common. The common drug-resistant bacteria encompass Klebsiella pneumonia (54.8%), Acinetobacter baumannii (29.0%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (16.1%). The 30-day mortality rate was 29.0%, and the 7-day microbial clearance rate was 64.5%. The inflammatory marker CRP changes, but not PCT and WBC, were statistically significant on days 7 and 14 after combination therapy. There were seven patients developing acute renal injury (AKI) after combination therapy and treating with continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Two patients developed diarrhea. CONCLUSION: The combination of CAZ/AVI and colistin has potential efficacy in patients with CR-GNB infection, but more studies are needed to determine whether it can reduce 30-day mortality rates and increase 7-day microbial clearance. At the same time, the adverse reactions of combination therapy should not be ignored.

The addition of urea in pre-cooled alkali aqueous solution is known to improve the dope stability of cellulose solution. However, its thermodynamic mechanism at a molecular level is not fully understood yet. By using molecular dynamics simulation of an aqueous NaOH/urea/cellulose system using an empirical force field, we found that urea was concentrated in the first solvation shell of the cellulose chain stabilized mainly by dispersion interaction. When adding a glucan chain into the solution, the total solvent entropy reduction is smaller if urea is present. Each urea molecule expelled an average of 2.3 water molecules away from the cellulose surface, releasing water entropy that over-compensates the entropy loss of urea and thus maximizing the total entropy. Scaling the Lennard-Jones parameter and atomistic partial charge of urea revealed that direct urea/cellulose interaction was also driven by dispersion energy. The mixing of urea solution and cellulose solution in the presence or absence of NaOH are both exothermic even after correcting for the contribution from dilution.
RESUMEN
AIMS: Inflammation-coupling tubular damage (ICTD) contributes to pathogenesis of septic acute kidney injury (AKI), in which insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 7 (IGFBP-7) serves as a biomarker for risk stratification. The current study aims to discern how IGFBP-7 signalling influences ICTD, the mechanisms that underlie this process and whether blockade of the IGFBP-7-dependent ICTD might have therapeutic value for septic AKI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In vivo characterization was carried out in B6/JGpt-Igfbp7em1Cd1165/Gpt mice subjected to cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Transmission electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, immunoblotting, ELISA, RT-qPCR and dual-luciferase reporter assays were used to determine mitochondrial functions, cell apoptosis, cytokine secretion and gene transcription. KEY FINDINGS: ICTD augments the transcriptional activity and protein secretion of tubular IGFBP-7, which enables an auto- and paracrine signalling via deactivation of IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R). Genetic knockout (KO) of IGFBP-7 provides renal protection, improves survival and resolves inflammation in murine models of cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), while administering recombinant IGFBP-7 aggravates ICTD and inflammatory invasion. IGFBP-7 perpetuates ICTD in a NIX/BNIP3-indispensable fashion through dampening mitophagy that restricts redox robustness and preserves mitochondrial clearance programs. Adeno-associated viral vector 9 (AAV9)-NIX short hairpin RNA (shRNA) delivery ameliorates the anti-septic AKI phenotypes of IGFBP-7 KO. Activation of BNIP3-mediated mitophagy by mitochonic acid-5 (MA-5) effectively attenuates the IGFBP-7-dependent ICTD and septic AKI in CLP mice. SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings identify IGFBP-7 is an auto- and paracrine manipulator of NIX-mediated mitophagy for ICTD escalation and propose that targeting the IGFBP-7-dependent ICTD represents a novel therapeutic strategy against septic AKI.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) could improve sleep quality by modulating electroencephalography (EEG) connectivity of insomnia disorder (ID) patients. Great heterogeneity had been found in the clinical outcomes of rTMS for ID. The study aimed to investigate the potential mechanisms of rTMS therapy for ID and develop models to predict clinical outcomes. METHODS: In Study 1, 50 ID patients were randomly divided into active and sham groups, and subjected to 20 sessions of treatment with 1 Hz rTMS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. EEG during awake, Polysomnography, and clinical assessment were collected and analyzed before and after rTMS. In Study 2, 120 ID patients were subjected to active rTMS stimulation and were then separated into optimal and sub-optimal groups due to the median of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index reduction rate. Machine learning models were developed based on baseline EEG coherence to predict rTMS treatment effects. RESULTS: In Study 1, decreased EEG coherence in theta and alpha bands were observed after rTMS treatment, and changes in theta band (F7-O1) coherence were correlated with changes in sleep efficiency. In Study 2, baseline EEG coherence in theta, alpha, and beta bands showed the potential to predict the treatment effects of rTMS for ID. CONCLUSION: rTMS improved sleep quality of ID patients by modulating the abnormal EEG coherence. Baseline EEG coherence between certain channels in theta, alpha, and beta bands could act as potential biomarkers to predict the therapeutic effects.

BACKGROUND: Brain recovery phenomenon after long-term abstinence had been reported in substance use disorders. Yet, few longitudinal studies have been conducted to observe the abnormal dynamic functional connectivity (dFNC) of large-scale brain networks and recovery after prolonged abstinence in heroin users. OBJECTIVE: The current study will explore the brain network dynamic connection reconfigurations after prolonged abstinence in heroin users (HUs). METHODS: The 10-month longitudinal design was carried out for 40 HUs. The 40 healthy controls (HCs) were also enrolled. Group independent component analysis (GICA) and dFNC analysis were employed to detect the different dFNC patterns of addiction-related ICNs between HUs and HCs. The temporal properties and the graph-theoretical properties were calculated. Whether the abnormalities would be reconfigured in HUs after prolonged abstinence was then investigated. RESULTS: Based on eight functional networks extracted from GICA, four states were identified by the dFNC analysis. Lower mean dwell time and fraction rate in state4 were found for HUs, which were increased toward HCs after prolonged abstinence. In this state, HUs at baseline showed higher dFNC of RECN-aSN, aSN- aSN and dDMN-pSN, which decreased after protracted abstinence. A similar recovery phenomenon was found for the global efficiency and path length in abstinence HUs. Mean while, the abnormal dFNC strength was correlated with craving both at baseline and after abstinence. CONCLUSION: Our longitudinal study observed the large-scale brain network reconfiguration from the dynamic perspective in HUs after prolonged abstinence and improved the understanding of the neurobiology of prolonged abstinence in HUs.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway in the regulation of peptide transporter 1 (PepT1) expression in small intestinal epithelium of septic rats by Ghrelin. METHODS: One hundred adult male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into sham operation group, sepsis group, sepsis+vagotomy group, sepsis+Ghrelin group, and sepsis+vagotomy+Ghrelin group, with 20 rats in each group. In the sham operation group, the cecum was separated after laparotomy, without ligation and perforation. In the sepsis group, the rats received cecal ligation puncture (CLP). In the sepsis+vagotomy group, the rats received CLP and vagotomy after laparotomy. In the sepsis+Ghrelin group, 100 µmol/L Ghrelin was intravenously injected after CLP immediately. The rats in the sepsis+vagotomy+Ghrelin group received CLP and vagotomy at the same time, then the Ghrelin was intravenously injected immediately with the same dose as the sepsis+Ghrelin group. Ten rats in each group were taken to observe their survival within 7 days. The remaining 10 rats were sacrificed 20 hours after the operation to obtain venous blood and small intestinal tissue. The condition of the abdominal intestine was observed. The injury of intestinal epithelial cells was observed with transmission electron microscopy. The contents of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) in serum and small intestinal tissue were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The brush border membrane vesicle (BBMV) was prepared, the levels of mRNA and protein expression of PepT1 in the small intestinal epithelium were detected by real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blotting. RESULTS: All rats in the sham operation group survived at 7 days after operation. The 7-day cumulative survival rate of rats in the sepsis group was significantly lower than that in the sham operation group (20% vs. 100%, P < 0.05). The cumulative survival rate of rats after Ghrelin intervention was improved (compared with sepsis group: 40% vs. 20%, P < 0.05), but the protective effect of Ghrelin was weakened after vagotomy (compared with sepsis+Ghrelin group: 10% vs. 40%, P < 0.05). Compared with the sham operation group, in the sepsis group, the small intestine and cecum were dull red, the intestinal tubules were swollen and filled with gas, the intestinal epithelial cells were seriously injured under transmission electron microscopy, the levels of TNF-α and IL-1ß in serum and small intestinal were significantly increased, and the expression levels of PepT1 mRNA and protein in the small intestinal epithelium were significantly decreased. It indicated that the sepsis rat model was successfully prepared. After vagotomy, the intestinal swelling and gas accumulation became worse in septic rats, leading to the death of all rats. Compared with the sepsis group, the abdominal situation in the sepsis+Ghrelin group was improved, the injury of intestinal epithelial cells was alleviated, the serum and small intestinal TNF-α and IL-1ß were significantly decreased [serum TNF-α (ng/L): 253.27±23.32 vs. 287.90±19.48, small intestinal TNF-α (ng/L): 95.27±11.47 vs. 153.89±18.15, serum IL-1ß (ng/L): 39.16±4.47 vs. 54.26±7.27, small intestinal IL-1ß (ng/L): 28.47±4.13 vs. 42.26±2.59, all P < 0.05], and the expressions of PepT1 mRNA and protein in the small intestinal epithelium were significantly increased [PepT1 mRNA (2-ΔΔCt): 0.66±0.05 vs. 0.53±0.06, PepT1 protein (PepT1/GAPDH): 0.80±0.04 vs. 0.60±0.05, both P < 0.05]. Compared with the sepsis+Ghrelin group, after vagotomy in the sepsis+vagotomy+Ghrelin group, the effect of Ghrelin on reducing the release of inflammatory factors in sepsis rats was significantly reduced [serum TNF-α (ng/L): 276.58±19.88 vs. 253.27±23.32, small intestinal TNF-α (ng/L): 144.28±12.99 vs. 95.27±11.47, serum IL-1ß (ng/L): 48.15±3.21 vs. 39.16±4.47, small intestinal IL-1ß (ng/L): 38.75±4.49 vs. 28.47±4.13, all P < 0.05], the up-regulated effect on the expression of PepT1 in small intestinal epithelium was lost [PepT1 mRNA (2-ΔΔCt): 0.58±0.03 vs. 0.66±0.05, PepT1 protein (PepT1/GAPDH): 0.70±0.02 vs. 0.80±0.04, both P < 0.05], and the injury of small intestinal epithelial cells was worse. CONCLUSIONS: Ghrelin plays a protective role in sepsis by promoting cholinergic neurons to inhibit the release of inflammatory factors, thereby promoting the transcription and translation of PepT1.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bloodstream infection (BSI) is a life-threatening condition in critically ill patients, but pathogen quantification techniques during treatment are laborious. This study aimed to explore the impact of monitoring pathogen DNA load changes and polymicrobial infection in blood by droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) on the prognosis of patients with BSIs. METHODS: This prospective case series study was conducted in the general intensive care unit of the Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital and included patients with BSIs from May 2020 to January 2021. Pathogens DNA load and presence of polymicrobial BSIs were dynamically monitored by ddPCR. RESULTS: Sixteen patients with BSIs proven by blood culture were recruited (87.5% men; mean age, 69.3 ± 13.7 years). All pathogens identified by blood culture were Gram-negative bacteria, among which seven were multidrug-resistant strains. The 28-day mortality rate was 62.5%. Compared to the 28-day survivors, the non-survivors were older (P = 0.04), had higher pathogen DNA load on the second (day 3-4) and third (day 6-7) ddPCR assay (P < 0.01 in both cases). In addition, the changes of pathogen DNA load in the 28-day survivors had a downward trend in the first three ddPCR assay, whereas stable load or an upward trend was observed in the 28-day non-survivors. Moreover, the number of pathogen species in patients with BSIs in the 28-day survivors decreased during the period of effective antibiotic treatment. CONCLUSION: The changes of pathogen DNA load and species monitored in blood by ddPCR may be used to determine antibiotic efficacy and make a more accurate prognostic assessment in patients with BSIs.

Utilizing natural and renewable natural polysaccharides as substrates to fabricate films or spinning with high metal ion adsorption and retain their mechanical properties is essential but challenging for the treatment of polluted water systems. In this study, the adsorption film was prepared with excellent mechanical properties and adsorption properties by blending chitosan (CS), poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), ß-cyclodextrin (ß-CD), and nanocellulose (NCC). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and scanning electron microscopy were used to investigate the microstructure of the film. The effects of the NCC content, contact time, temperature, initial concentration, and pH on the adsorption of Cu(II) ion were investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to explore the adsorption mechanism. The results showed that a suitable content of NCC enhanced the tensile strength of the CS/PVP/ß-CD/NCC composite film and improved its adsorption capacity under acidic conditions. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the equilibrium data could be better described by the Langmuir isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption of the Cu(II) ion onto the CS/PVP/ß-CD/NCC film exhibited physical adsorption and spontaneous process. XPS analysis showed that the nitrogen-containing functional groups play an important role during the adsorption process. Therefore, applying this adsorbent to remove metal ions during wastewater treatment is promising.

The elastic tensors of chitin and chitosan allomorphs were calculated using density functional theory (DFT) with and without the dispersion correction and compared with experimental values. The longitudinal Young's moduli were 114.9 or 126.9 GPa for α-chitin depending on the hydrogen bond pattern: 129.0 GPa for ß-chitin and 191.5 GPa for chitosan. Furthermore, the moduli were found to vary between 17.0 and 52.8 GPa in the transverse directions and between 2.2 and 15.2 GPa in shear. Switching off the dispersion correction led to a decrease in modulus by up to 63%, depending on the direction. The transverse Young's moduli of α-chitin strongly depended on the hydroxylmethyl group conformation coupled with the dispersion correction, suggesting a synergy between hydrogen bonding and dispersion interactions. The calculated longitudinal Young's moduli were, in general, higher than experimental values obtained in static conditions, and the Poisson's ratios were lower than experimental values obtained in static conditions.
