BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) volume assessment is an important part of patient management and is routinely obtained by non-contrast head CT (NCHCT) using the validated ABC/2 measurement method. Because conventional MRI imaging sequences demonstrate variability in ICH appearance, volumetric analyses for MRI bleed volume in a standardized manner using ABC/2 is not possible. The recently introduced multiecho-complex total field inversion quantitative susceptibility mapping (mcTFI QSM) MRI technique, which maps brain tissue susceptibility to both depict brain tissue structures and quantify tissue susceptibility, may provide a viable alternative. In this study we evaluated mcTFI QSM ABC/2 ICH volume assessment relative to NCHCT. METHODS: Patients with ICH who had undergone NCHCT and MRI brain scans within 48 h were recruited for this retrospective study. The ABC/2 method was applied to estimate the bleed volume for both NCHCT and MRI by a CAQ-certified neuroradiologist with 10 years of experience and a trained laboratory assistant. Results were analyzed via Bland-Altman (B-A) and linear regression. RESULTS: 54 patients (27 females) who had undergone NCHCT and MRI within 48 h (<24 h., n = 31, 24-48 h, n = 10) were enrolled. mcTFI QSM ICH volume measurement method showed a positive correlation (99.5%) compared to NCHCT. B-A plot comparing ABC/2 ICH volume on NCHCT and mcTFI MRI done for patients within 24 h demonstrates a bias of -0.09%. CONCLUSIONS: ICH volume calculation using ABC/2 on mcTFI QSM showed a high correlation with NCHCT measurement. These results suggest mcTFI QSM is a promising MRI method for ABC/2 for bleed volume measurement.

Carbon capture and utilization technology is the research stream dedicated to mitigating the pressing effect of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). The present study investigates a potential environmentally conscious solvent to capture and utilize CO2 using waste concrete and seawater under reactor conditions. Although seawater's CO2 soubility is low due to salinity, waste concrete raises seawater's pH and alkalinity, acting as a feedstock for CO2 dissolution and offsetting the adverse effects of salinity. To evaluate the performance of the novel natural seawater-concrete solutions for CO2 capture, time-dependent pH changes of solutions exposed to CO2 were measured in a microchannel using fluorescence microscopy. The concentration of dissolved CO2 in the solution was derived from pH change, revealing a 4-fold increase in the total dissolved carbon from 0.034 to 0.13 M and a 57.54% increase in the CO2 dissolution coefficient from 530 to 835 µm2/s in seawater upon concrete addition. Electrolysis further enhanced the CO2 capture capacity of the seawater-concrete solution by increasing the pH, enabling the solid precipitation of carbonate minerals. Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed that electrolysis-driven precipitates are mainly amorphous calcium carbonates, useful building blocks for seashells and coral reefs.

Purpose: To study the epidemiological pattern, prevalence, types, and correlates of age-related cataracts in a tertiary care center in central India. Methods: This hospital-based single-center cross-sectional study was conducted on 2,621 patients diagnosed with cataracts for 3 years. Data pertaining to demography, socio-economic profile, cataract grading, cataract types, and associated risk factors were evaluated. Statistical analysis using unadjusted odds ratio (OR) and multivariate logistic regression was performed, with P-value <0.05 considered significant with the power of the study being 95%. Results: The commonest age group affected was 60-79 years, closely followed by the 40-59 years age group. The prevalence of nuclear sclerosis (NS), cortical (CC), and posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC) was found to be 65.2% (3,418), 24.6% (1,289), and 43.4% (2,276), respectively. Among mixed cataracts, (NS + PSC) had the highest prevalence of 39.8%. Smokers were found to have 1.17 times higher odds of developing NS than non-smokers. Diabetics had 1.12 times higher odds of developing NS cataracts and 1.04 times higher odds of developing CC. Patients with hypertension showed 1.27 times higher odds of developing NS and 1.32 times higher odds of developing CC. Conclusion: The prevalence of cataracts in the pre-senile age group (<60 years) was found to have increased significantly (35.7%). A higher prevalence of PSC (43.4%) was found in studied subjects, as compared to the data of previous studies. Smoking, diabetes, and hypertension were found to have a positive association with a higher prevalence of cataracts.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is a frequent and severe consequence of primary brain tumors. The safety of antiplatelet medications in this patient population is undefined. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to determine whether antiplatelet medications are associated with an increased risk of ICH in patients with primary brain tumors. PATIENTS/METHODS: We performed a matched, retrospective cohort study of patients with the diagnosis of primary brain tumor treated at our institution between 2010 and 2021. Radiographic images of all potential ICH events underwent blinded review. The primary end point of the study was the cumulative incidence of ICH at 1 year after tumor diagnosis. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: A total of 387 patients with primary brain tumors were included in the study population (130 exposed to antiplatelet agents, 257 not exposed). The most common malignancy was glioblastoma (n = 256, 66.1%). Among the intervention cohort, 119 patients received aspirin monotherapy. The cumulative incidence of any ICH at 1 year was 11.0% (95% CI, 5.3-16.6) in those receiving antiplatelet medications and 13.0% (95% CI, 8.5-17.6) in those not receiving antiplatelet medications (Gray test, p = 0.6). The cumulative incidence of major ICH was similar between the cohorts (3.3% in antiplatelet cohort vs 2.9% in control cohort, p = 1.0). This study did not identify an increased incidence of ICH in patients with primary brain tumors exposed to antiplatelet medications.

Background: During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, trust within a community in the projected schemes or strategies to combat COVID-19 depends on the confidence generated and launched by the government and medical employees toward the public. The "vaccination intention" within a community is determined by a range of factors, which include sociodemographic features, personal beliefs, and attitude toward vaccination. Methods: A nationwide survey was conducted involving 2000 people using a Tencent questionnaire platform. One-way ANOVA was conducted for age, education, and occupation with vaccination intention for the COVID-19 vaccine. Correlation analysis was conducted between sources, trust, and vaccination intention indicating both types of sources (official and unofficial sources) and both types of trust (trust in the social environment and in vaccines). Results: The reception of the sources of information on the COVID-19 vaccine was significantly higher from official sources (M = 5.54, SD = 1.37) and government officials (M = 5.68, SD = 1.499) compared with that from experts in medicine (M = 5.39, SD = 1.511). Among the unofficial sources, "chatting and communicating with family and friends" scored the highest (M = 4.84, SD = 1.649). In the statistics on people's trust in all aspects involved in vaccines, the level of trust in the social environment was significantly higher and more concentrated than in vaccines (M = 5.67, SD = 1.129). The level of trust in government (M = 5.80, SD = 1.256) was slightly higher than in medical personnel (M = 5.53, SD = 1.199). People's willingness to be vaccinated was generally high (M = 78.15, SD = 22.354). The demographic factors were not influential in vaccination intention. Both sources (official and unofficial sources) and trust (trust in the social environment and in vaccines) are significantly and positively correlated with vaccination intention. Information receptions from official and unofficial sources were significant positive predictors of trust in the social environment, but they were not significant predictors of trust in vaccines. The mediating effect of trust in vaccines on the relationship between receiving information from official and unofficial sources and vaccination intention was insignificant. Conclusions: This study revealed that trust in the environment is an important channel linking people's information reception and vaccination intention, explores a new path for health information communication, and attempts to provide new ideas for health information dissemination and promotion.

Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) facilitates mapping of the bulk magnetic susceptibility of tissue from the phase of complex gradient echo (GRE) MRI data. QSM phase processing combined with an R2* model of magnitude of multiecho gradient echo data (R2*QSM) allows separation of dia- and para-magnetic components (e.g., myelin and iron) that contribute constructively to R2* value but destructively to the QSM value of a voxel. This R2*QSM technique is validated against quantitative histology­optical density of myelin basic protein and Perls' iron histological stains of rim and core of 10 ex vivo multiple sclerosis lesions, as well as neighboring normal appearing white matter. We found that R2*QSM source maps are in good qualitative agreement with histology, e.g., showing increased iron concentration at the edge of the rim+ lesions and myelin loss in the lesions' core. Furthermore, our results indicate statistically significant correlation between paramagnetic and diamagnetic tissue components estimated with R2*QSM and optical densities of Perls' and MPB stains. These findings provide direct support for the use of R2*QSM magnetic source separation based solely on GRE complex data to characterize MS lesion composition.

PURPOSE: Tissue magnetic susceptibility sign can potentially be detected on susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) phase (SW-P). This study aims to investigate its performance for depicting brain susceptibility structures. METHODS: A simulation was performed to depict magnetic susceptibility structures of various geometries on SW-P and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). Brain MRI was performed on 25 subjects using SWI on a 3 T MRI system. QSM was generated from the same data. SW-P and QSM were analyzed according to radiological assessment for depicting globus pallidus nuclei, optic radiation white matter tracts, and lateral ventricular choroid plexus calcifications. In 11 of these subjects, CT was available and correlated with SW-P and QSM to assess their performance in quantifying calcifications in the choroid plexus. RESULTS: In simulation, the appearance of a sphere on SW-P ranged from centric nodule to mixed positive and negative values as the diameter increased. Large cylinders also appeared as mixed positive and negative values. In comparison, QSM correctly depicted the susceptibility distribution of all magnetic structures. On human brain images, SW-P depicted the globus pallidus and optic radiation with mixed positive and negative values, consistent with simulation, and small choroid plexus calcifications as either mixed positive and negative values or as centric nodules; QSM depicted all structures as solid structures with the expected signs. For measuring calcification in the choroid plexus, QSM vs CT linear regression had a higher coefficient of determination compared to SW-P vs CT and SW-P vs QSM. CONCLUSION: Appearance of susceptibility sources on SW-P changes with object size. This problem can be overcome using QSM.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has recommended that individual governments identify vaccine hesitancy areas. It is proposed that the governments, with the aid of local organizations, educate and implement social insights on the vaccination so that high population levels are covered with this safe immune program. METHODS: A longitudinal online survey covered 3000 adults from India. We examined the demography, behavioral (socio-economic) attitude, vaccine hesitancy, vaccine resistance for the COVID-19 vaccine. The specific reasons for the COVID-19 vaccine decline were also evaluated. RESULTS: Our survey revealed 59% definite response, 29% low-level response, and 7% high-level response for vaccine hesitancy, while 6% had resistant views on the COVID-19 vaccine. Individuals who had higher income levels, lived in a society, maintained social distancing, had downloaded the COVID-19 update app, showed a positive attitude towards their government, and more confidence in their healthcare system were more inclined towards the vaccination. On the contrary, individuals who had overstated the risks of COVID-19 and had a religious and populistic attitude towards vaccination were more hesitant/resistant to vaccination. The respondents who declined vaccine administration were further evaluated for their specific reason for their response. The most common reasons for declining the COVID-19 vaccine were post-vaccine scare of adverse health effects and accepting the information spread by social media. CONCLUSIONS: The results in our study show that by identifying population "hot spots" that have negative or unclear information on the COVID-19 vaccination, these "hot spots" can be addressed by involving friendly organizations that can clear their strong disbeliefs and increase the percentage of vaccine-definite people within the population. The role of government-induced COVID-19 vaccine policy measures can always be beneficial to cause this shift from disbelief to confidence within the population.

The world is currently facing a pandemic triggered by the novel corona virus (SARS - CoV2), which causes a highly infectious infection that predominantly affects the lungs, resulting in a variety of clinical symptoms some cases may be asymptomatic while others may result in to severe respiratory disorder, if the infection is left unattended it may result in multi-organ failure and eventually death of the patient. The transmission of infection is by droplet and fomites of the infected person. The incubation period of virus is from 2 to 14 days. Most common symptoms resemble flu-like but later progress to pneumonia along with dyspnoea and worsening of oxygen saturation, thus requiring ventilator support. The diagnostic modalities include Reverse transcriptase real time PCR (Quantitative Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction) which is recommended method used for diagnosis of the COVID-19 infection using oro-pharyngeal or nasopharyngeal swabs of the patients. Recently serological tests for antigen and antibody detection has been approved by ICMR. Till now, nine COVID-19 vaccines are granted emergency approval for prevention and for the management of infection symptomatic and supportive measures are being adopted. Globally major pharmaceutical firms are engrossed for development of a potent vaccine candidate. This review highlights on various vaccine candidates under clinical trials.
