RESUMEN

Diffusion models have been demonstrated as powerful deep learning tools for image generation in CT reconstruction and restoration. Recently, diffusion posterior sampling, where a score-based diffusion prior is combined with a likelihood model, has been used to produce high quality CT images given low-quality measurements. This technique is attractive since it permits a one-time, unsupervised training of a CT prior; which can then be incorporated with an arbitrary data model. However, current methods rely on a linear model of x-ray CT physics to reconstruct or restore images. While it is common to linearize the transmission tomography reconstruction problem, this is an approximation to the true and inherently nonlinear forward model. We propose a new method that solves the inverse problem of nonlinear CT image reconstruction via diffusion posterior sampling. We implement a traditional unconditional diffusion model by training a prior score function estimator, and apply Bayes rule to combine this prior with a measurement likelihood score function derived from the nonlinear physical model to arrive at a posterior score function that can be used to sample the reverse-time diffusion process. This plug-and-play method allows incorporation of a diffusion-based prior with generalized nonlinear CT image reconstruction into multiple CT system designs with different forward models, without the need for any additional training. We develop the algorithm that performs this reconstruction, including an ordered-subsets variant for accelerated processing and demonstrate the technique in both fully sampled low dose data and sparse-view geometries using a single unsupervised training of the prior.

RESUMEN

Wireless sensing of the wave propagation direction from radio sources lays the foundation for communication, radar, navigation, etc. However, the existing signal processing paradigm for the direction of arrival estimation requires the radio frequency electronic circuit to demodulate and sample the multichannel baseband signals followed by a complicated computing process, which places the fundamental limit on its sensing speed and energy efficiency. Here, we propose the super-resolution diffractive neural networks (S-DNN) to process electromagnetic (EM) waves directly for the DOA estimation at the speed of light. The multilayer meta-structures of S-DNN generate super-oscillatory angular responses in local angular regions that can perform the all-optical DOA estimation with angular resolutions beyond the diffraction limit. The spatial-temporal multiplexing of passive and reconfigurable S-DNNs is utilized to achieve high-resolution DOA estimation over a wide field of view. The S-DNN is validated for the DOA estimation of multiple radio sources over 5 GHz frequency bandwidth with estimation latency over two to four orders of magnitude lower than the state-of-the-art commercial devices in principle. The results achieve the angular resolution over an order of magnitude, experimentally demonstrated with four times, higher than diffraction-limited resolution. We also apply S-DNN's edge computing capability, assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, for extremely low-latency integrated sensing and communication with low power consumption. Our work is a significant step towards utilizing photonic computing processors to facilitate various wireless sensing and communication tasks with advantages in both computing paradigms and performance over electronic computing.

RESUMEN

Background: Surgery may be associated with postoperative cognitive impairment in elder participants, yet the extent of its association with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) remains undetermined. Objective: To determine the relationship between surgery and MCI. Methods: The data of participants from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative were analyzed, including individuals with MCI or normal cognition. We focused on surgeries conducted after the age of 45, categorized by the number of surgeries, surgical risk, and the age at which surgeries occurred. Multivariable logistic regression was employed to determine the association between surgery and the development of MCI. Results: The study is comprised of 387 individuals with MCI and 578 cognitively normal individuals. The overall surgery exposure (adjusted OR = 1.14, [95% CI 0.83, 1.56], p = 0.43) and the number of surgeries (adjusted OR = 0.92  [0.62, 1.36], p = 0.67 for single exposure, adjusted OR = 1.12 [0.71, 1.78], p = 0.63 for two exposures, adjusted OR = 1.38 [0.95, 2.01], p = 0.09 for three or more exposures compared to no exposure as the reference) were not associated with the development of MCI. However, high-risk surgeries (adjusted OR = 1.79 [1.00, 3.21], p = 0.049) or surgeries occurring after the age of 75 (adjusted OR = 2.01 [1.03, 3.90], p = 0.041) were associated with a greater risk of developing MCI. Conclusions: High risk surgeries occurring at an older age contribute to the development of MCI, indicating a complex of mechanistic insights for the development of postoperative cognitive impairment.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Pimavanserin, a novel 5-HT2A receptor antagonist, has been approved for the treatment of Parkinson's disease psychosis (PDP). This study aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the adverse events (AEs) of pimavanserin by analyzing the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. METHODS: AE reports related to pimavanserin in the FAERS database from the second quarter of 2016 to the fourth quarter of 2023 were mined. Signal detection methods, including the Reporting Odds Ratio (ROR), Proportional Reporting Ratio (PRR), Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network (BCPNN), and Empirical Bayesian Geometric Mean (EBGM), were employed to identify and classify AEs. RESULTS: The study collected 12,839,687 AE reports, with 30,997 reports primarily suspecting pimavanserin, identifying 166 Preferred Terms (PTs) across 27 System Organ Classes (SOCs). The data showed that males reported more frequently than females, with the highest reporting in patients aged 75 and above. Reports increased over time, with a significant rise in 2023 compared to 2016. Major categories of AEs included hallucination, death, product dose omission issue, and confusional state, with death being notably the second most reported issue. Strong and new potential AEs were identified, including sleep-related issues like somnolence, insomnia, and sleep talking; cognitive and behavioral issues such as alexithymia, belligerence, and aggression; dose-related issues like prescribed underdose and underdose; and other AEs like nonspecific reactions. CONCLUSION: This study reveals potential AEs of pimavanserin, including sleep disorders and cognitive changes, underscoring the importance of careful monitoring and personalized treatment in managing PDP.

RESUMEN

A healthy lifestyle is related to metabolic syndrome (MetS), but the mechanism is not fully understood. This study aimed to examine the association of components of MetS with lifestyle in a Chinese population and potential mediation role of serum uric acid (SUA) in the association between lifestyle behaviors and risk of components of MetS. Data were derived from a baseline survey of the Shaanxi urban cohort in the Regional Ethnic Cohort Study in northwest China. The relationship between components of MetS, healthy lifestyle score (HLS), and SUA was investigated by logistic or linear regression. A counterfactual-based mediation analysis was performed to ascertain whether and to what extent SUA mediated the total effect of HLS on components of MetS. Compared to those with 1 or less low-risk lifestyle factors, participants with 4-5 factors had 43.6% lower risk of impaired glucose tolerance (OR = 0.564; 95%CI: 0.408~0.778), 60.8% reduction in risk of high blood pressure (OR = 0.392; 95%CI: 0.321~0.478), 69.4% reduction in risk of hypertriglyceridemia (OR = 0.306; 95%CI: 0.252~0.372), and 47.3% lower risk of low levels of HDL cholesterol (OR = 0.527; 95%CI: 0.434~0.641). SUA mediated 2.95% (95%CI: 1.81~6.16%) of the total effect of HLS on impaired glucose tolerance, 14.68% (95%CI: 12.04~18.85%) on high blood pressure, 17.29% (95%CI: 15.01~20.5%) on hypertriglyceridemia, and 12.83% (95%CI: 10.22~17.48%) on low levels of HDL cholesterol. Increased HLS tends to reduce risk of components of MetS partly by decreasing the SUA level, which could be an important mechanism by which lifestyle influences MetS.

RESUMEN

Escherichia coli (E. coli), a Gram-negative bacterium, is the primary pathogen responsible for endometritis in dairy cattle. The outer membrane components of E. coli, namely lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and bacterial lipoprotein, have the capacity to trigger the host's innate immune response through pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). Tolerance to bacterial cell wall components, including LPS, may play a crucial role as an essential regulatory mechanism during bacterial infection. However, the precise role of Braun lipoprotein (BLP) tolerance in E. coli-induced endometritis in dairy cattle remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of BLP on the regulation of E. coli infection-induced endometritis in dairy cattle. The presence of BLP was found to diminish the expression and release of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-8 and IL-6), while concurrently promoting the expression and release of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 in endometrial epithelial cells (EECs). Furthermore, BLP demonstrated the ability to impede the activation of MAPK (ERK and p38) and NF-κB (p65) signaling pathways, while simultaneously enhancing signaling through the STAT3 pathway in EECs. Notably, BLP exhibited a dual role, acting both as an activator of TLR2 and as a regulator of TLR2 activation in LPS- and E. coli-treated EECs. In E. coli-infected endometrial explants, the presence of BLP was noted to decrease the release of proinflammatory cytokines and the expression of HMGB1, while simultaneously enhancing the release of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Collectively, our findings provide evidence that the bacterial component BLP plays a protective role in E. coli-induced endometritis in dairy cattle.

RESUMEN

The remarkable optical properties of carbon dots, particularly their tunable room-temperature phosphorescence, have garnered significant interest. However, challenges such as aggregation propensity and complex phosphorescence control via energy level manipulation during synthesis persist. Addressing these issues, we present a facile gel platform for tunable afterglow materials. This involves chemically cross-linking biomass-derived silicon-doped carbon dots with carboxymethylcellulose and incorporating non-precious metal salts (BaCl2, CaCl2, MgCl2, ZnCl2, ZnBr2, ZnSO4) to enhance phosphorescence. Metal salts boost intersystem crossing via spin-orbit coupling, elevating triplet state transitions and activating phosphorescence. Chemical bonding and salt-induced coordination/electrostatic interactions establish confinement effects, suppressing non-radiative transitions. Diverse salt-gel interactions yield gels with tunable phosphorescence lifetimes (9.48 ms to 32.13-492.39 ms), corresponding to afterglow durations ranging from 3.20 to 11.86 s. With its broad tunability and high recognition, this gel material exhibits promising potential for dynamic multilevel anti-counterfeiting applications.

RESUMEN

Contrast transfer function (CTF) estimation is a necessary step in the cryo-electron tomography (cryoET) workflow and essential for high-resolution in situ structural determination. However, the low signal-to-noise ratio and continuous defocus variation in micrographs of cryoET tilt series make accurate CTF estimation challenging. Here, we report a tilt-series-based joint CTF estimation method implemented in the new software CTFMeasure. The joint estimation method combines all Thon-ring signals in a tilt series to improve the estimation accuracy. By using an objective function involving the CTF parameters and geometric parameters of a cryoET tilt series, CTFMeasure can estimate the CTF parameters of each micrograph and the absolute tilt angle offset of the lamellar sample relative to the sample stage plane, which is usually the glancing angle used during focused ion beam (FIB) milling. Tests on both synthetic and experimental data, as well as subtomogram averaging, demonstrated the accurate CTF estimation of cryoET tilt series by CTFMeasure.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Predicting vaccination behaviors accurately could provide insights for health care professionals to develop targeted interventions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop predictive models for influenza vaccination behavior among children in China. METHODS: We obtained data from a prospective observational study in Wuxi, eastern China. The predicted outcome was individual-level vaccine uptake and covariates included sociodemographics of the child and parent, parental vaccine hesitancy, perceptions of convenience to the clinic, satisfaction with clinic services, and willingness to vaccinate. Bayesian networks, logistic regression, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, support vector machine (SVM), naive Bayes (NB), random forest (RF), and decision tree classifiers were used to construct prediction models. Various performance metrics, including area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), were used to evaluate the predictive performance of the different models. Receiver operating characteristic curves and calibration plots were used to assess model performance. RESULTS: A total of 2383 participants were included in the study; 83.2% of these children (n=1982) were <5 years old and 6.6% (n=158) had previously received an influenza vaccine. More than half (1356/2383, 56.9%) the parents indicated a willingness to vaccinate their child against influenza. Among the 2383 children, 26.3% (n=627) received influenza vaccination during the 2020-2021 season. Within the training set, the RF model showed the best performance across all metrics. In the validation set, the logistic regression model and NB model had the highest AUC values; the SVM model had the highest precision; the NB model had the highest recall; and the logistic regression model had the highest accuracy, F1 score, and Cohen κ value. The LASSO and logistic regression models were well-calibrated. CONCLUSIONS: The developed prediction model can be used to quantify the uptake of seasonal influenza vaccination for children in China. The stepwise logistic regression model may be better suited for prediction purposes.

RESUMEN

The ongoing emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants poses challenges to the immunity induced by infections and vaccination. We conduct a 6-month longitudinal evaluation of antibody binding and neutralization of sera from individuals with six different combinations of vaccination and infection against BA.5, XBB.1.5, EG.5.1, and BA.2.86. We find that most individuals produce spike-binding IgG or neutralizing antibodies against BA.5, XBB.1.5, EG.5.1, and BA.2.86 2 months after infection or vaccination. However, compared to ancestral strain and BA.5 variant, XBB.1.5, EG.5.1, and BA.2.86 exhibit comparable but significant immune evasion. The spike-binding IgG and neutralizing antibody titers decrease in individuals without additional antigen exposure, and <50% of individuals neutralize XBB.1.5, EG.5.1, and BA.2.86 during the 6-month follow-up. Approximately 57% of the 107 followed up individuals experienced an additional infection, leading to improved binding IgG and neutralizing antibody levels against these variants. These findings provide insights into the impact of SARS-CoV-2 variants on immunity following repeated exposure.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: We studied the diagnostic accuracy and discordance of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) by comparing biopsy and urinary cytology with matched nephroureterectomy specimens. METHODS: Sixty-nine patients with UTUC without neoadjuvant treatment were retrospectively identified who had matched biopsy and nephroureterectomy specimens. Twenty patients had concurrent upper tract cytology. H&E and cytology slides were re-reviewed. Statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS: Patients included 48 men and 21 women with a mean age of 69 years. A concordant grade between biopsy and surgical specimen was present in 49 (71%) patients. The mean size of biopsy specimens in the discordant group was significantly smaller than that in the concordant group. Invasion was evaluated in 48 biopsy cases that had adequate subepithelial tissue, and 33 of them were diagnosed with concordant invasion status. Mean tumor size in both tumor grade and invasion discordant groups was significantly larger than that in the concordant group. High-grade urothelial carcinoma was detected in 84% of cases using urinary cytology. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates the diagnostic challenges of UTUC on small biopsy specimens. Biopsy specimen size and tumor size are significantly associated with the diagnostic discordance. Upper tract cytology showed high diagnostic accuracy and should be complementary to the biopsy.

RESUMEN

Help-seeking is a crucial problem-solving strategy for young children. However, it is not yet clear how children weigh different cues to make help-seeking decisions across preschool years, especially in caregiver-child interactions. The current study used a social expectation task to examine the effects of maternal competence and situational stress level on 4- to 6-year-old children's help-seeking expectations from a third-party perspective. Children's expectations of whether to seek help were measured. A total fo 135 Han Chinese children aged 4 to 6 years from an eastern city of China participated in this study. We found that 4- to 6-year-olds expected to seek more help from a competent mother than from an incompetent mother in low-stress conditions. When the stress level was high, however, they expected to seek help regardless of maternal competence levels. These results suggest that the interaction between the situational stress level and maternal competence determines young children's help-seeking expectations across preschool years. They further suggest that young children seek help from mothers in an active and discriminatory way.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: Complete remission with partial hematological recovery (CRh) has been used as an efficacy endpoint in clinical trials of nonmyelosuppressive drugs for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We conducted a pooled analysis to characterize the clinical outcomes for patients with AML who achieved CRh after treatment with ivosidenib, olutasidenib, enasidenib, or gilteritinib monotherapy in clinical trials used to support marketing applications. The study cohort included 841 adult patients treated at the recommended drug dosage; 64.6% were red blood cell or platelet transfusion dependent at study baseline. Correlations between disease response and outcomes were assessed by logistic regression modeling for categorical variables and by Cox proportional hazards modeling for time-to-event variables. Patients with CRh had a higher proportion with transfusion independence (TI) for at least 56 days (TI-56; 92.3% vs 22.3%; P < .0001) or TI for at least 112 days (TI-112; 63.5% vs 8.7%; P < .0001), a reduced risk over time for severe infection (hazard ratio [HR], 0.43; P = .0007) or severe bleeding (HR, 0.17; P = .01), and a longer overall survival (OS; HR, 0.31; P < .0001) than patients with no response. The effects were consistent across drugs. In comparison with patients with CR, the effect sizes for CRh were similar for TI-56 and for risk over time of infection or bleeding but less for TI-112 and OS. CRh is associated with clinical benefits consistent with clinically meaningful palliative effects for the treatment of AML with nonmyelosuppressive drugs, although less robustly than for CR.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aims to compare antimicrobial drug usage in our hospital to Jiangsu Province and China from 2020 to 2022. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A detailed analysis was performed using data from the National Antimicrobial Drug Clinical Application Monitoring Network. Several parameters were studied: the rate of antimicrobial drug use, number and types of drugs used, the rate of combined use, rate of microbiological examinations, drug use intensity, and cumulative Defined Daily Doses (DDDs). RESULTS: From 2020 to 2022, our hospital's antimicrobial drug usage rate was consistently lower than Jiangsu Province and China. The average number of drug types and the combined drug use rate were higher in 2020 but fell below those in Jiangsu Province and China in 2021 and 2022. Our microbiological examination rate consistently surpassed that of Jiangsu Province and China. Furthermore, our Antimicrobial Usage Density and cumulative DDDs were notably lower. While AUD remained stable, DDDs showed a decreasing trend. The most dominant drug in DDDs was cefditoren, a third-generation cephalosporin. CONCLUSIONS: During the pandemic years, our hospital not only met the requirements for antimicrobial drug usage, microbiological examination, AUD, and cumulative DDDs but also demonstrated a consistent year-by-year decrease in drug usage and DDDs.

RESUMEN

Background and aims: Most studies have analyzed the relationship between resting heart rate (RHR) measured at only one time point and future clinical events. The current study aims to investigate the impact of long-term RHR changes on future clinical outcomes in a decade-long cohort with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: The two-staged follow-up involved 2,513 T2DM participants. The first stage (2008-2014) intended to identify levels and trends in RHR changes, while the second stage (2014-2018) attempted to collect new occurrence records of clinical results. Cox proportional hazards models were applied to predict hazard ratios (HRs), along with 95% confidence interval (CI) for the correlation between RHR changes and future events. Results: There is no significant correlation between baseline RHR levels and long-term clinical events. According to the range of RHR change, compared with the stable RHR group, the adjusted HRs for cardiovascular events and all-cause death in the large increase group were 3.40 (95% CI: 1.33-8.71, p=0.010) and 3.22 (95% CI: 1.07-9.64, p=0.037), respectively. While the adjusted HRs for all-cause death and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) in the moderate decrease group were 0.55 (95% CI: 0.31-0.96, p=0.037) and 0.51 (95% CI: 0.26-0.98, p=0.046). According to the trend of RHR, compared with the normal-normal group, the adjusted HRs for composite endpoint events and cerebrovascular events in the normal-high group were 1.64 (95% CI: 1.00-2.68, p=0.047) and 2.82 (95% CI: 1.03-7.76, p=0.043), respectively. Conclusion: Changes in RHR had predictive value for long-term clinical events in diabetic populations. Individuals with significantly elevated RHR over a particular period of time showed an increased risk of adverse events.

RESUMEN

This study uses the two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) method to explore the causal relationships between smoking initiation (SMKI), never smoking (NSMK), past tobacco smoking (PTSMK), and the usage of antidepressants (ATD). Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with genome-wide significance (P < 5E-08) related to SMKI, NSMK, and PTSMK were selected from the genome-wide association study (GWAS) database as instrumental variables (IVs). The main method, inverse variance weighted (IVW), was utilized to investigate the causal relationship. The results demonstrated a positive causal relationship between SMKI and ATD use, where SMKI leads to an increase in ATD use. Conversely, NSMK and PTSMK showed a negative causal relationship with ATD use, meaning that NSMK and PTSMK lead to a reduction in ATD use. Additionally, sensitivity analysis showed that the results of this study were robust and reliable. Using the TSMR method and from a genetic perspective, this study found that SMKI leads to an increase in ATD use, while NSMK and PTSMK reduce ATD use.

RESUMEN

The excessive emission of iron will pollute the environment and harm human health, so the fluorescence detection and adsorption of Fe3+ are of great significance. In the field of water treatment, cellulose-based gels have attracted wide attention due to their excellent properties and environmental friendliness. If carbon dots are used as a crosslinking agent to form a gel with cellulose, it can not only improve mechanical properties but also show good biocompatibility, reactivity, and fluorescence properties. In this study, silicon-doped carbon dots/carboxymethyl cellulose gel (DCG) was successfully prepared by chemically crosslinking biomass-derived silicon-doped carbon dots with carboxymethyl cellulose. The abundant crosslinking points endow the gel with excellent mechanical properties, with a compressive strength reaching 294 kPa. In the experiment on adsorbing Fe3+, the theoretical adsorption capacity reached 125.30 mg/g. The introduction of silicon-doped carbon dots confers the gel with excellent fluorescence properties and a good selective response to Fe3+. It exhibits a good linear relationship within the concentration range of 0-100 mg/L, with a detection limit of 0.6595 mg/L. DCG appears to be a good application prospect in the adsorption and detection of Fe3+.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to conduct an exhaustive evaluation of Vilazodone's safety in clinical application and to unearth the potential adverse event (AE) risks associated with its utilization based on FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. METHODS: This research employed data spanning from the first quarter of 2011 to the third quarter of 2023 from the FAERS database. Various signal detection methodologies, including the Reporting Odds Ratio (ROR), Proportional Reporting Ratio (PRR), Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network (BCPNN), and Empirical Bayesian Geometric Mean (EBGM), were utilized to ascertain the correlation between Vilazodone and specific AEs. RESULTS: The study compiled a total of 17,439,268 reports of drug AEs, out of which 5,375 were related to Vilazodone. Through signal mining, 125 Preferred Terms (PTs) encompassing 27 System Organ Classes (SOCs) were identified. The findings indicated a higher prevalence among females and patients within the 45 to 65 age bracket. The principal categories of AEs included Psychiatric disorders, Nervous system disorders, and Gastrointestinal disorders, with prevalent incidents of Diarrhoea, Nausea, and Insomnia. Moreover, the study identified robust signals of novel potential AEs, notably in areas such as sleep disturbances (Sleep paralysis, Hypnagogic hallucination, Rapid eye movements sleep abnormal, Sleep terror, Terminal insomnia, Tachyphrenia), sexual dysfunctions (Female orgasmic disorder, Orgasm abnormal, Disturbance in sexual arousal, Spontaneous penile erection, Anorgasmia, Sexual dysfunction, Ejaculation delayed), and other symptoms and injuries (Electric shock sensation, Violence-related symptom, Gun shot wound). CONCLUSION: Although Vilazodone presents a positive prospect in the management of MDD, the discovery of AEs linked to its use, particularly the newly identified potential risks such as sleep and sexual dysfunctions, necessitates heightened vigilance among clinicians.

RESUMEN

Two photochromic Cd(II)-CPs were obtained based on the viologen ligand using different synthetic routes, named {[Cd4(p-BDC)4(CPB)2(H2O)2]·2H2O·EtOH}n (1) and {[Cd(p-BDC)(CPB)(H2O)]·(L)·DMF}n (2) (p-H2BDC = 1,4-benzene-dicarboxylate, HCPB·Cl = 1-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium·Cl, L = 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene, and DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), respectively. Due to different coordination modes, the two Cd(II)-CPs show different structures. Compound 1 exhibits a three-dimensional (3D) framework with bimetallic nodes, while compound 2 displays a 2-fold interpenetrated (4,4) net topology. Notably, the two Cd(II)-CPs exhibit substantial disparities in photo/thermochromism, which can be attributed to variations in donor-acceptor (D-A) distances arising from structural differences. Compound 1 showed visually sensitive photo- and thermochromic behavior due to multi-pathway electron transfer and short D-A distances, which is relatively rare in electron-transfer type photochromic systems. In contrast, 2 only demonstrates insensitive photochromic behavior, with a slight deepening of the color observed after 2 hours of UV light, which is due to the mono-pathway electron transfer and long D-A distance. Moreover, we first combined Cd(II)-viologen CPs with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to prepare a 1@PDMS flexible UV imaging film. 1@PDMS exhibits excellent bendability and stretchability and maintains good photochromic properties after 100 bending cycles. To demonstrate the rapid color response and distinct color contrast of 1, its application in anti-counterfeiting is also demonstrated.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Serous fluids offer crucial diagnostic insights, but inconsistent analysis hampers reporting quality, especially in indeterminate (ID) categories like atypia of undetermined significance (AUS) and suspicious for malignancy (SFM). The 2020 International System for reporting Serous Fluid Cytopathology (TIS) aims to standardize communication and reduce reporting disparities. This study evaluates TIS's role in AUS and SFM categories within our institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 4-year retrospective search of cytopathology reports from December 2015 to December 2019 for AUS and SFM diagnoses in pleural, ascitic, pericardial fluids, and peritoneal washings was performed and results reclassified using TIS definitions. The risk of malignancy (ROM) was calculated for existing and reclassified diagnoses. RESULTS: Over 4 years, we received 2998 serous fluid specimens. AUS constituted 2.3% (70 cases), while SFM constituted 0.5% (16 cases). Excluding repeats, 80 cases were TIS-reviewed. Sixteen cases of ID diagnoses were reclassified. Two cases of AUS were changed to negative for malignancy (NFM) and 12 to SFM. Two SFM cases were upgraded to malignancy. ROM shifted from 63% to 60% for AUS and 100% to 85% for SF (TIS's ROM range: AUS: 66% ± 10%; SFM: 82% ± 4.8%). CONCLUSIONS: This institution's ID diagnosis rate is low. AUS ROM is challenging but aligns with TIS, primarily favoring benign. All SFM diagnoses are highly suspicious but quantitatively inadequate for definitive malignancy, explaining the elevated ROM. AUS rate should gauge quality, not serve as a catch-all category. Algorithmic cytology with cell blocks and ancillary studies aids reclassification. TIS is user-friendly and is a consistent methodology for standardized reporting. Further studies are needed to evaluate ROM and define reproducible diagnostic criteria for each category for better system utilization.
